Trade-offs in Energy Allocation During Lactation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SYNOPSIS. During lactation, mothers require energy to meet bothmaternal and offspring requirements. If a mother exports toomuch energy to dependent offspring (in milk), her weight lossmay be excessive and maternal risk may increase. Conversely, too little energy allocation to offspring may reduce the growthrate or induce mortality of dependent offspring. This paradigmwas evaluated in cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) supportingsmall (3 pup) and large (6 pup) litters from early to late lactation.Several types of evidence indicate that physiological constraintslimit the ability of mothers with large litters to provide resourcesto offspring. Mothers with large litters produced a dilute,energy-poor milk and their rates of food intake, weight lossand energy export per litter appeared to approach physiologicalmaxima. Whereas the energy exported to pups in small littersincreased from early to late lactation, the energy flow perpup in large litters was consistently low; consequently, offspringin large litters had low growth rates. An increase in eithermaternal food intake or weight loss (catabolism of maternaltissue) could have provided additional energy to offset thelow growth rate of pups in large litters. However, mothers withlarge litters did not substantially increase their food intakeor weight loss compared with mothers supporting small litters. These results indicate that the maternal support of offspringin large litters is limited. The pattern of energy allocationshown by cotton rats with large litters likely reflects a compromisebetween meeting maternal and offspring energy requirements (cf.,Parker and Macnair, 1979). The energy flow is greater than optimalfor the parent but less than optimal for the offspring. Lessmaternal-offspring conflict occurs in small than large littersbecause offspring in small litters maintain a high growth rateat a relatively low maternal cost. Yet, under favorable environmentalconditions, the reduction in maternal-offspring conflict hasno apparent fitness benefit.  相似文献

To estimate the optimality of brood size, it is essential to study the effects of brood size manipulation on offspring survival and reproductive success. Moreover, testing the generality of the hypothesis of reproductive costs requires experimental data from a diversity of organisms. Here I present data on the growth, survival and reproductive success of bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus individuals from manipulated litters. Furthermore, the survival of mothers whose litter size was manipulated was studied. At weaning, the mean weight of pups from enlarged litters was lower and from reduced litters higher compared to control litters. After winter, at the start of the breeding season, individuals from enlarged litters, especially males, were still lighter than individuals from the other two treatments. Litter enlargements did not increase the number of reproducing female offspring per mother, nor did the litter sizes of female offspring differ between treatments. There were no differences between treatments in winter survival of offspring after weaning, but among female offspring, weaning weight explained the survival probabilities over winter. A higher weight of females at winter determined the probability of starting to reproduce in spring. The survival of mothers did not seem to be influenced by litter manipulation performed the previous year. According to the results, mothers nursing enlarged or reduced litters do not gain any fitness benefits in terms of number of offspring surviving to breeding. The results are consistent with the majority of experiments conducted in birds, which have found costs of enlarged brood appearing as offspring trade-offs rather than parent trade-offs. As a means to improve mouse production, the differences among litter numbers in reproductivity, post-weaned growth and puberty of offspring were examined in 4 strains of mice, SHN/Mei, SLN/Mei, C3H/HeMei and GRS/AMei. Females were mated to be concurrently pregnant and lactating and reproductivity was recorded from the 1st to the 3rd litters. Some offspring of both sexes were weighed at 30, 40 and 50 days of age and vaginal opening was also checked in females. Pre-weaned growth of offspring differed little between litter numbers in all strains except GRS/A. Meanwhile, post-weaned growth of offspring was higher in the 2nd and 3rd litters than in the 1st litter of SHN and SLN, associated with a decreased rate of still-born pups. In C3H/He, post-weaned growth of offspring was higher in the 1st and 2nd litters and rearing rate decreased for the 3rd litter. In GRS/A, the 1st litter showed the greatest pre- and post-weaning growth rate of offspring. All findings indicate that in SHN and SLN strains the later litters are better for offspring production, while in C3H/He and GRS/A strains it is the earlier litters. The results stress the value of having information on reproductive characteristics of mouse strains for efficient offspring production.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the cryogenic effect of antifreeze protein (AFP) on transgenic mouse ovaries which is expressed AFP type III from Ocean pout and the production of live offspring by orthotopic transplantation of cryopreserved mouse ovaries. In this study, whole transgenic and nontransgenic mouse ovaries were vitrified with 20% DMSO and 20% EG in M2 medium supplemented with 0.5 M sucrose. All vitrified and toxicity control and fresh ovaries were transplanted orthotopically into ovariectomized recipients bilaterally. For fresh ovaries transplantation, 5 mice delivered litters of 18 and 19 live pups in first and second matings, respectively. For toxicity control of chemicals, 6 mice delivered litters of 22 and 23 live pups. For nontransgenic mouse ovaries (vitrified) transplantation, 7 mice delivered litters of 22 and 23 live pups. For transgenic mouse ovaries (vitrified) transplantation, 10 mice delivered litters of 35 and 37 live pups. Litter sizes from pups of freshly transplanted ovaries were not significantly different from AFP-transplanted transgenic ovaries but those from nontransgenic-transplanted ovaries were significantly different from the AFP-transplanted transgenic ovaries group (P < 0.05). In this study, for the first time, it was shown that the ovarian tissue of AFP transgenic mice was protected from cryopreservation by vitrification. These results demonstrate that a normal reproductive lifespan can be restored by orthotopic transplantation of AFP transgenic-vitrified ovary.  相似文献

We analyzed the long-term effects of postovulatory aging of mouse oocytes on reproductive fitness and longevity of offspring. Hybrid (C57BL/6JIco x CBA/JIco) parental generation (F0) females were artificially inseminated at 13 h (approximately 1 h postovulation) or 22 h (approximately 10 h postovulation) after GnRH injection. Reproductive fitness of first generation (F1) females was tested from the age of 28 wk until the end of their reproductive life. In males, the testing period ranged from the age of 2 yr until their natural death. Experimental F1 females exhibited longer between-labor intervals, decreased frequency of litters, and lower total number of litters and offspring born. Experimental second generation (F2) pups displayed teratogenic defects, higher preweaning mortality, and decreased body weight at weaning. Incidence of infertility was higher in experimental F1 males, which translated into lower total number of offspring born when compared with the control group. Life expectancy of F1 offspring was decreased in the experimental group. These results clearly show that postovulatory aging of mouse oocytes decreases reproductive fitness and longevity of offspring.  相似文献

The influence of concurrent pregnancy until the third lactation on reproduction was studied in four strains of mice (SHN, SLN, C3H/He and GRS/A) as a possible step to evaluate the efficiency of this system on offspring production. In all strains, little difference was observed between sequential and concurrent pregnancy and lactation groups in any parameter as the index of reproductivity--delivery interval, litter size, average weight and growth rate of pups, mother weight, rearing rate, still-birth rate and rate of still-born pups. Also, no difference was seen between groups of any strain, in the number of females which had three litters. The estimated number of pups weaned per female during 50 days after first being placed with males was higher in the concurrent pregnancy groups than in the sequential pregnancy groups of all strains. Meanwhile, the incidence of spontaneous mammary tumors, the major characteristic of these strains, was consistently lower in the concurrent pregnancy group in all strains. These results have demonstrated that the concurrent pregnancy and lactation system is an efficient means of mouse production.  相似文献

We sought evidence for postnatal resource limitation among littermates of the domestic rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus , and asked whether deaths of indi~vidual pups benefit survivors by increasing their share of milk. Milk ingestion, growth and mortality of 10 chinchilla-breed captive litters were recorded between birth and age 21 d. That milk limits growth and survival was indicated by larger litters showing lower weight gain and higher mortality, and by a significant positive correlation between milk ingested by individual pups and weight increase. Within litters, pups with higher birth weights grew faster, and weight hierarchies became increasingly stable over the 3 weeks, suggesting that advantages accrued during gestation were progressively consolidated during lactation. After individual pups died, the total daily milk weight obtained by the litter was generally unaffected but per capita milk consumption and growth of surviving pups increased, and increases in per capita consumption were greater in smaller litters. The most successful competitors for milk apparently benefit from the deaths of their littermates by obtaining an increased share of an undiminished daily food supply. This relationship has not previously been demonstrated in any vertebrate.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) enrichment of terrestrial ecosystems dramatically changes ecosystem diversity and structure of plant communities. Research designed to elucidate effects of nitrogen addition on mammalian assemblages is rare. We investigated nitrogen requirements of hispid cotton rats ( Sigmodon hispidus ) and fulvous harvest mice ( Reithrodontomys fulvescens ), small mammals native to the tallgrass prairie of the southern Great Plains, USA, to better understand population responses of these species to nitrogen enrichment. We studied reproductive requirements by measuring growth of offspring under varying levels of dietary nitrogen. We predicted that dietary niche would dictate nitrogen requirements, such that the larger herbivore ( S. hispidus ) would have a lower dietary need for nitrogen per unit mass than the small omnivore/granivore ( R. fulvescens ). Reproductive output (measured as mass gain of litters and offspring) was responsive to varying nitrogen in cotton rats but not in harvest mice. Nitrogen intake that supported 50% survival of juvenile harvest mice (1.34% dietary nitrogen) also was adequate for maximum growth (1.29%). Cotton rats potentially drew on maternal nutrient stores to support litter growth at low levels of dietary nitrogen (as low as 1.08%). Overall, nitrogen requirements for maximum reproduction were greater (2.31% dietary nitrogen) for cotton rats. We conclude that life history characteristics and body size constraints rather than dietary niche explain the differential species response to variation in dietary nitrogen. Our results imply that nitrogen enrichment in old-field succession in the southern Great Plains may lead to dominance by cotton rats and a reduction in diversity of the small-mammal assemblage. Consumers with similar abilities to take advantage of increased environmental nitrogen may likewise dominate other ecosystems.  相似文献

Two groups of litters obtained from individuals captured in natural environments have been monitored under laboratory conditions. The females of one group reared the offspring in the absence of sires; the litters of the other group are raised by both parents. It is ascertained that the presence of sires, especially those who are characterized by higher levels of aggression, has a negative effect on the survival and growth rates of the pups. Therefore, the reproductive success of common vole males can decrease if they enter the family-group composition and depends on the specificity of their behavior, first and foremost, an inclination toward exhibiting aggression.  相似文献

This study analyzes the long-term effects of delayed motherhood on reproductive fitness and life expectancy of offspring in the mouse. Hybrid (C57BL/6JIco x CBA/JIco) first-generation (F1) females, either at the age of 10 or 51 wk, were individually housed with a randomly selected 12- to 14-wk-old hybrid male following a breeding pen system until females reached the end of their reproductive life. Reproductive fitness of second-generation (F2) females was tested from the age of 25 wk until the end of their reproductive life. In F2 males, the testing period ranged from the age of 52 wk until their natural death. Delayed motherhood of hybrid F1 female mice was associated with a decreased percentage of male F3 offspring at birth and lower life expectancy and body weight during adulthood of F2 offspring. There was, however, no evident negative effect of delayed motherhood on several reproductive fitness variables in either male or female F2 offspring. This included between-parturition interval, litter size at birth and at weaning, body weight at weaning and preweaning mortality of F3 pups, percentage of F3 litters with at least one pup cannibalized, and time at which female and male F2 offspring ceased their reproductive life. These data clearly show that delayed motherhood in the mouse is associated with negative long-term effects on offspring survival.  相似文献

Isotope-based techniques for the measurement of water turnover, energy expenditure, and milk intake often assume that there is no recycling of isotopes once they have left the labeled animal. In experiments involving lactating females or their suckling offspring, there are several possible routes of isotope recycling. These include the consumption of labeled milk by offspring, the ingestion of labeled excreta, and the rebreathing of exhaled labeled CO(2) or water vapor by both mother and offspring. Isotope recycling might be especially important during lactation because the offspring are in close contact with each other and their mother for prolonged periods. We show here in 24- to 30-day-old domestic dog Canis familiaris puppies that there was no detectable transfer of (18)O or (2)H from labeled to unlabeled pups in two litters (16 pups, 8 labeled, 8 unlabeled) that were weaned early and independent of their mother. However, there was a significant transfer of both isotopes from labeled to unlabeled pups and from labeled pups to their mothers in nine equivalent nursing litters of the same age (27 labeled, 26 unlabeled pups). The increases in enrichment of isotopes in unlabeled offspring were greater than the increases in enrichment of the mothers. This indicates that maternal ingestion of offspring excreta and subsequent transfer of isotope in milk is not the sole pathway of recycling. Additional routes must also be important, such as exchange of isotope between pups on saliva-coated nipples and perhaps direct ingestion of excreta by unweaned young. Recycling is unlikely to be an important factor when determining maternal metabolic rate during peak lactation in domestic dogs. However, experiments that are designed to assess the energy demands of pups and isotope-based estimates of water turnover in offspring may need to take into account any effects of isotope recycling. In a theoretical example, removing the effects of recycling increased the measured energy expenditure in pups by up to 7% and increased the calculated elimination rates of both isotopes by up to 11.1% in (18)oxygen and 10.9% in (2)hydrogen.  相似文献

Efficiency in laboratory mouse breeding is hampered by poor reproductive performance, including the loss of entire litters shortly after birth. However, the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood and establishing the cause of death in laboratory mouse pups can be complicated. Newborn mouse pups are generally hidden in nests, dead pups are often eaten by the female, and the widespread practice of leaving periparturient females undisturbed complicates inspection, which may delay the discovery of pup loss. In order to efficiently prevent problems with litter loss, it is important to find key factors for survival. We investigated differences in periparturient behavior between female laboratory mice whose pups survived until weaning and females whose entire litters were lost. Video recordings of 82 primiparous females of the C57BL/6 strain or knockouts with C57BL/6 background were used. The mice were observed from 24 h before until 24 h after parturition and female behaviors coded using a pre-established ethogram. The relationship between behavior and survival was analyzed using logistic models, where litter survival was regressed on the proportion of 30-s observations with at least one occurrence of the behavior. We found that females with surviving litters performed more nest building behavior during the last 24 h before parturition (p = 0.004) and spent less time outside the nest during the entire observation period (p = 0.001). Increased litter survival was also associated with more passive maternal behaviors and the female ignoring still pups less. Females that lost their litters performed more parturition-related behaviors, suggesting prolonged labor. The results indicate that maternal behavior plays a significant role in laboratory mouse pup survival. Complications at parturition also contribute to litter mortality.  相似文献

Four groups of pregnant Wistar rats, each of which consisted of 15 animals were administered 0, 12, 14 and 48 mg/kg/day of cobalt (II) chloride from the 14th day of gestation through 21 days of lactation. The offspring were observed for mortality, body weight, body and tail length and general symptomatology after 1, 4 and 21 days of nursing. The number of litters was higher for the control group. The survival ratios were also higher for the control group. Besides, a dose-dependent delay in the growth of the living young could be observed. No significant differences in organ weights in the animals killed 21 days after birth were observed. The blood parameters analysed did not show differences between the treated and control pups. Cobalt produced toxic effects on the mothers, affecting the late gestation as well as the postnatal development of the pups.  相似文献

Trivers and Willard (1973) predicted that stressed adult female mammals may enhance their fitness by skewing offspring sex ratios and maternal investment to favor daughters. The present study investigated whether stressing young hamsters might also influence sex ratio and growth of subsequent offspring. Control females received food ad libitum (A) on Days 1-50 postpartum (AA). Experimental females were food-restricted (R) either on Days 1-25 (RA), Days 26-50 (AR), or Days 1-50 (RR) postpartum. Subjects were mated when 91-95 days old. Litter sizes and survivorship (= % litters within a treatment that contained at least one pup), sex ratio (= % males), and pup weights in the next generation were recorded every fifth day from parturition until Day 25 postpartum. Control litters contained significantly more offspring at birth than did RR litters. Sex ratio was significantly higher at birth for AA litters than for the other treatments. Postpartum sex ratio within each group remained similar to that recorded at birth. RR litters contained significantly fewer pups compared to the other three treatments from Days 5-25. RR female pups weighed significantly more at birth than their counterparts in the other treatments. Weights of males at birth were similar in all treatments. By Day 25, both male and female RR pups weighed significantly less than control, AR, and RA pups. Food restriction early in life may have long-term consequences on sex ratio and pup growth in golden hamsters.  相似文献

Thirty-nine pregnant adult Wistar strain rats were randomly assigned to one of three exposure groups: 0, 0.75, or 1.50 Gy X-radiation total exposure. Animals were exposed from the 14th to the 18th days of gestation at 0, 0.15, or 0.30 Gy per day. At term, 15 rats were killed and morphologic analyses were completed. Twenty-four rats were allowed to deliver their offspring. On the first day of postnatal life, litters were reduced to a maximum of eight pups per litter, with equal numbers of male and female offspring wherever possible. A total of 187 pups were observed for the age of acquisition of five reflexes (air righting, surface righting, visual placing, negative geotaxis, auditory startle) and the appearance of four physiologic markers (pinna detachment, eye opening, vaginal opening, testes descent). There was significant dose-related weight reduction in term fetuses and offspring throughout the 86-day postnatal period. Postnatal growth rate (g gained/day) was unaffected. Adult offspring brain and gonadal weight and organ weight:body weight ratios were reduced. Using the PAC50 methodology, dose-related alterations occurred in the acquisition of several reflexes. All physiologic markers exhibited a dose-related delay in appearance. These results indicate that fractionated exposure to X-radiation during the fetal period in the rat results in dose-dependent alterations in postnatal growth and physiologic development. These studies are important for our understanding of the long-range effects of prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation late in gestation.  相似文献

This study was conducted to assess the effects of endophyte-infected Acremonium coenophialum tall fescue (KY-31) seed (80% infected) on lactation in CD-1 dams and suckling performance of pups as measured by pup survival and growth rates. Twenty-four pairs of mature CD-1 mice were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments: 1) 100% mouse chow ad libitum; 2) 40% endophyte-infected tall fescue seed and 60% mouse chow (w/w); 3) reduced intake (100% chow), adjusted daily to the intake level of Treatment 2; and 4) 60% infected tall fescue seed and 40% chow. The mice were preconditioned on their respective diets for 100 d prior to 96 h of cohabitation between pairs of males and females. At parturition the litters were removed, and each dam was given a litter of six pups of equal weight, size and sex ratio to suckle for 15 days. All pups given to all the dams were born to other mice that were not part of the study and had not been exposed to endophyte-containing diets. Dams and litter weights were measured daily for 15 consecutive days. The combined body weight measurements of litters from dams fed the tall fescue containing diets (Treatments 2 and 4) were significantly lower (2.07 +/- 0.41 g/d) than that of litters from dams fed the chow containing diets (Treatments 1 and 3) during the suckling trial (P<0.05). Similarly, nine of ten (90%) dams fed the chow containing diets maintained five or more pups (5.5 +/- 0.2) throughout the study as compared to five of nine (55.6%) dams fed the tall fescue containing diets that maintained less than five pups (4.5 +/- 0.2).  相似文献

Mothers were removed from rat litters for 1 or 10 hr per day on days 3 to 9 following birth. This procedure resulted in reduced open field defaecation and increased body weight in the offspring tested at approximately 70 days, but did not affect open field ambulation, comparing with untreated control litters. Since 1- and 10-hr maternally deprived groups did not differ from one another it is not possible to attribute conclusively the effects to maternal absence per se, and the effects could be due to incidental disturbance of the pups in treated litters or to maternal reaction to the pups when the mother is replaced.  相似文献

Pregnancy, lactation and the relationship between mother and their offspring in adolescence was studied in terms of pups neurosomatic development. The frequency of conception and birth rate were reduced in adolescent dams. Their body weight gain was accelerated during the first two weeks of pregnancy, while a significant delay occurred in the third week. At birth, plasma corticosterone level in the neonates was increased. Adolescent dams ingested less food during the first week of gestation. Following that, till the second week of lactation, the food consumption was equal to that of control group. Although adolescent pups were heavier at birth, the reduction of their number and of their body weight occurred during lactation. Judging by appearance of grasping, righting, placing and of negative geotaxis reflexes, the delay in their neurological maturation was also present. The reason for the growth and neurodevelopmental delay during lactation is probably the result of malnutrition and stress of disturbed mother - infant relationship in adolescent litters, which lasted at least during the two postnatal weeks. It was indicated by the resting plasma corticosterone levels during the first two postnatal weeks. This finding suggests that the pregnancy in adolescent rats induces delay in physical and neurological development, as well as in the increased rate of postnatal mortality of their offspring.  相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that female house mice (F1 generation of wild caught Mus domesticus) should preferentially invest in own offspring if confronted with young of different degrees of relatedness. The maternal behaviour of females with litters of 4 own and 4 unrelated alien young (cross-fostered at day 1 of lactation) was analysed during a lactation period of 22 days both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding (food was restricted by 20%). Cross-fostering and restricted feeding had no effect on the amount of time spent nursing until weaning. Under both feeding conditions the females did not differ in their maternal behaviour towards own and alien young: there were no significant differences either in the amount of time spent nursing own versus alien pups or in the time spent licking own versus alien young. Weight gain of own and alien = wild littermates did not differ significantly in mixed litters and was similar both under ad libitum and under restricted feeding. Such indiscriminate behaviour might be adaptive if female house mice prefer to communally nest with a relative and thus improve their inclusive fitness by investing in own and related offspring in a communal nest. Under moderate restricted feeding females could not wean the entire litter but reduced litter size by cannibalizing on average 2.7 pups (75% of the pups were killed when they were 4–8 days old). Females with cross-fostered litters killed as many own as alien young. This suggests that females cannot discriminate between own and unrelated young if cross-fostering takes place at day 1 of lactation. Besides testing kin recognition abilities, the experiments also allow analysis of the weaning strategy of females under food shortage. Under restricted feeding, body weight of the females was significantly lower during middle lactation than under ad libitum feeding. Weaning weight of young in reduced litters under food restriction (9–10 g) did not differ significantly from weaning weight of young in litters of 7–10 young, but was lower than that of young in similar sized litters (litter size 6), under ad libitum feeding. The maternal behaviour of cannibalizing some young under food shortage can be interpreted as a weaning strategy which results in the largest number of offspring that can be raised to a minimal weaning weight of 9–10 g. Such a weaning strategy might represent a favourable trade-off between number and size of young produced.  相似文献

Scientific research has yet to conclusively determine the optimal cage size for mice. The authors examined the effect of cage size on mouse breeding performance and on offspring behavior, which can serve as indications of overall well-being. They housed breeding trios of C57BL/6Tac mice in standard or large individually ventilated cages and measured four reproductive parameters: litter size; litter survival to weaning age; average pup weight at 7, 14 and 21 days; and the number of days between litter births. They investigated the behavior of a subset of male and female pups from parents housed in cages of each size in the elevated plus maze test, the open field assay and the acoustic startle test. Cage size had no significant effect on any of the reproductive parameters measured and few or inconsistent effects on behavior in weaned pups.  相似文献
