Seventeen active males (age 22.9 +/- 4.9 year) participated in a study to examine the effects of creatine monohydrate supplementation on total body weight (TBW), percent body fat, body water content, and caloric intake. The TBW was measured in kilograms, percent body fat by hydrostatic weighing, body water content via bioelectrical impedance, and caloric intake by daily food log. Subjects were paired and assigned to a creatine or placebo group with a double-blind research design. Supplementation was given for 4 weeks (30 g a day for the initial 2 weeks and 15 g a day for the final 2 weeks). Subjects reported 2 days a week for supervised strength training of the lower extremity. Significant increases before and after the study were found in TBW (90.42 +/- 14.74 to 92.12 +/- 15.19 kg) and body water content (53.77 +/- 1.75 to 57.15 +/- 2.01 L) for the creatine group (p = 0.05). No significant changes were found in percent body fat or daily caloric intake in the creatine group. No significant changes were noted for the placebo group. These findings support previous research that creatine supplementation increases TBW. Mean percent body fat and caloric intake was not affected by creatine supplementation. Therefore weight gain in lieu of creatine supplementation may in part be due to water retention.  相似文献

Gastric evacuation rates were determined for different sizes of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) at sub-zero temperatures (−1.4 and −0.5°C). These temperatures represent ambient conditions for Arctic cod in the Canadian high Arctic. Evacuation half-times, the time required for half of the content of the stomach to be evacuated, were longer (36–70 h; mean=51 h) than those reported in studies carried out on other fish species. Gastric evacuation rates at low temperatures were equal to, or below, those predicted by extrapolation from experiments conducted at higher temperatures. There were no significant differences in evacuation rates among fish size-groups or diets, but evacuation rates were slower for fish that had been starved prior to experiments. Estimated daily rations for Arctic cod in Resolute Bay, N.W.T., were 0.51% body weight for small fish (4.5 g) and 1.13% body weight for large fish (51 g). Slow stomach evacuation rates at low temperatures may limit daily food intake when food is seasonally abundant. This may contribute to slow growth rates and limited maximum size of Arctic cod in Canadian high Arctic waters. Received: 14 July 1997 / Accepted: 15 November 1997  相似文献

Fat mass deposition during pregnancy using a four-component model.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Estimates of body fat mass gained during human pregnancy are necessary to assess the composition of gestational weight gained and in studying energy requirements of reproduction. However, commonly used methods of measuring body composition are not valid during pregnancy. We used measurements of total body water (TBW), body density, and bone mineral content (BMC) to apply a four-component model to measure body fat gained in nine pregnant women. Measurements were made longitudinally from before conception; at 8-10, 24-26, and 34-36 wk gestation; and at 4-6 wk postpartum. TBW was measured by deuterium dilution, body density by hydrodensitometry, and BMC by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Body protein was estimated by subtracting TBW and BMC from fat-free mass. By 36 wk of gestation, body weight increased 11.2 +/- 4.4 kg, TBW increased 5.6 +/- 3.3 kg, fat-free mass increased 6.5 +/- 3.4 kg, and fat mass increased 4.1 +/- 3.5 kg. The estimated energy cost of fat mass gained averaged 44,608 kcal (95% confidence interval, -31, 552-120,768 kcal). The large variability in the composition of gestational weight gained among the women was not explained by prepregnancy body composition or by energy intake. This variability makes it impossible to derive a single value for the energy cost of fat deposition to use in estimating the energy requirement of pregnancy.  相似文献

This article reports a study in which the equation for total body water (TBW) estimated from deuterium (2H2O)-dilution method and bioelectrical impedance measurement (BIM) is described. Subjects were 60 healthy males aged 30 +/- 18.3 yr (18-74) and 31 healthy females aged 37 +/- 17.5 yr (19-70). Total body water determined by the analysis of the dilution of orally ingested deuterium oxide (1g2H2O, 99.75 atom % excess/kg body weight) in urine. Bioelectrical impedance was measured for each subjects in a supine position using an electrical impedance analyzer (500 microA, 50kHz, T-1988K, Toyo Physical Inc.) with a four electrodes (Y-250, Nihon Kohden). The mean values of total body water and the impedance in males and females subjects were 34.1 +/- 4.27 l and 25.7 +/- 2.42 l, 567 +/- 28.5 omega and 562 +/- 32.5 omega, respectively. Height squared divided by resistance (Ht2/R) correlated well with TBW as measured by 2H2 O, r = 0.530 (p less than 0.001) in males and r = 0.782 (p less than 0.001) in females. The best-fitting regression equation to predict TBW comprised Ht2/R(X1) and body weight (X2) (R = 0.915, SEE = 1.70 l in males and R = 0.834, SEE = 1.28 l in females). Equations were provided with BIM instrument for the prediction of TBW: for males TBW, l = 0.1983X1 + 0.4004X2 - 0.7938 and for females TBW, l = 0.3536X1 + 0.1269X2 + 3.3417. These results suggest that bioelectrical impedance measurement is a useful measure of total body water in Japanese subjects.  相似文献

During natural fasting conditions in postweaned northern elephant seal (NES) (Mirounga angustirostris) pups, urinary water loss is minimized and percent total body water (TBW) is maintained constant. However, following infusion of hypertonic saline, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and urine output increased in fasting pups. Therefore, we quantified the magnitude of the hypernatremia-induced diuresis relative to the animal's total body water (TBW) pool and the percentage of filtered water reabsorbed. Following a 24 h control period, naturally fasting NES pups (n=7) were infused (4 ml min(-1)) with hypertonic saline (16.7%) at a dose of 3 mmol NaCl kg(-1) body mass. Total body water was estimated prior to infusion by tritium dilution, GFR was estimated by standard creatinine clearance, and urine output (V) was measured for 24 h during the control and post infusion periods. Percentage of filtered water reabsorbed was calculated as (1-(V/GFR))x100. Twenty-four hours following the infusion, GFR (control: 69+/-12 ml min(-1) and post-infusion: 118+/-19 ml min(-1); mean+/-S.E.) increased 77+/-28% above control and the percentage of filtered water reabsorbed was decreased 0.4+/-0.1%. The increase in urine output (control: 218+/-47 ml d(-1) and post-infusion: 883+/-92 ml d(-1)) accounted for 1.7+/-0.2% of the pups' TBW. The hypernatremia-induced diuresis was accompanied by the loss of body water indicating the lack of water retention. Although the 77% increase in GFR was only associated with a 0.4% decrease in the percentage of filtered water reabsorbed, this decrease was significant enough to result in a 4-fold increase in urine output. Despite the observed diuresis, fasting NES pups appear to possess an efficient water recycling mechanism requiring only a small percentage of body water to excrete an excess salt load. This water recycling mechanism may allow pups to avoid negative perturbations in body water as they initiate feeding in a marine environment following the fast.  相似文献

Total body water (TBW), lean body mass (LBM), and triglyceride mass were measured in 23 5-yr-old baboons (13 females and 10 males). Male baboons weighed more, had more LBM, more TBW, and contained less triglyceride mass per unit body weight than female baboons. Among all baboons, triglyceride mass per unit body weight ranged from 2.4 to 33.5%. The ratio TBW:LBM ranged from 0.70 to 0.92, increasing (r = 0.98) with increased body triglyceride content (both percent and absolute mass) in both male and female baboons. However, the water content per unit weight of tissues free of fat cells (liver, lungs, kidneys, central nervous system, eyes, tongue) was nearly constant at 0.73 +/- 0.02. The increase in TBW:LBM is more than can be expected from the water in the increased adipose tissue mass. We conclude that TBW:LBM is not constant but is influenced by body triglyceride content in baboons.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged hypoxia on body water distribution was studied in four unanesthetized adult goats (Capra lircus) at sea level and after 16 days in a hypobaric chamber [(380 Torr, 5,500 m, 24 +/- 1 degrees C); arterial PO2 = 27 +/- 2 (SE) Torr]. Total body water (TBW), extracellular fluid volume (ECF), and plasma volume (PV) were determined with 3H2O, [14C]inulin, and indocyanine green dye, respectively. Blood volume (BV) [BV = 100PV/(100 - hematocrit)], erythrocyte volume (RCV) (RCV = BV - PV), and intracellular fluid (ICF) (ICF = TBW - ECF) and interstitial fluid (ISF) (ISF = ECF - PV) volumes were calculated. Hypoxia resulted in increased pulmonary ventilation and arterial pH and decreased arterial PCO2 and PO2 (P less than 0.05). In addition, body mass (-7.1%), TBW (-9.1%), and ICF volume (-14.4%) all decreased, whereas ECF (+11.7%) and ISF (+27.7%) volumes increased (P less than 0.05). The decrease in TBW accounted for 89% of the loss of body mass. Although PV decreased significantly (-15.3%), BV was unchanged because of an offsetting increase in RCV (+39.5%; P less than 0.05). We conclude that, in adult goats, prolonged hypobaric hypoxia results in decreases in TBW volume, ICF volume, and PV, with concomitant increases in ECF and ISF volumes.  相似文献

Energy expenditure and water flux were measured in free-ranging alpacas Lama pacos, a South American camelid, on natural pastures of the Peruvian Andes (altitude: 4,400 m above sea level). Water influx rate (WIR) was estimated in 16 males (age 2 years, weight 48.5+/-8.6 kg) labelled with 2H. In addition, the field metabolic rate (FMR) was measured in four of these animals labelled with both an oxygen (18O) and a hydrogen (2H) isotope. The WIR averaged 3.62 L H2O/day and the mean total body water 33.1 kg, equal to 68.2% of body weight (BW). The FMR of the four doubly labelled animals was 14.05 MJ/day. New allometric equations were calculated describing the relationships between WIR or FMR and BW, respectively, including published data on ruminants and the present alpaca results. The regression equation indicates that daily WIR scales to a similar metabolic size (kilograms of BW(0.94)) in alpacas than in wild or domesticated ruminants and camelids originating from arid and semiarid habitats. The resulting regression equation for FMR explained over 99% of the variation and corresponded to the function FMR (kilojoules per day)=1079 (kilograms of BW0.668) (n=5, r2=0.995, P<0.001). The FMR measured in this study, the first reported for a South American camelid species, suggests that free-ranging alpacas have similar energy expenditures on a metabolic weight basis as other wild ruminants living under harsh climatic conditions.  相似文献

Calcium dissociation constants (KD) were measured as a function of temperature for parvalbumin, a small acidic protein expressed abundantly in fast-twitch muscle, from the Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) and compared to values previously determined for Antarctic and temperate zone teleosts. Estimates of KD were derived independently from fluorometric titrations and calorimetry. In addition, the primary structure of B. saida parvalbumin was determined. Calcium KDs for parvalbumin from B. saida were fundamentally similar to those for parvalbumins from Antarctic species (6.68+/-0.59 nM and 7.77+/-0.72 nM at 5 degrees C, respectively), but significantly different from temperate zone species (1.35+/-0.28 nM at 5 degrees C). However, estimates of KD for B. saida parvalbumin at 5 degrees C closely matched values for temperate zone fish at 25 degrees C (6.54+/-0.56 nM), recapitulating the prior observation that calcium affinity of parvalbumin is conserved at the native temperature of teleost fish. Full sequence of B. saida parvalbumin was generated using reverse-phase HPLC and RACE-PCR. The Arctic parvalbumin showed 83% homology to a carp parvalbumin. None of the 16 total substitutions between the two parvalbumins resided in the cation binding sites of the protein, indicating that the structural locus of the thermal sensitivity of function lies outside the active regions.  相似文献

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) provides a measure of lean soft tissue (LST). LST hydration, often assumed to be constant, is relevant to several aspects of DEXA body composition estimates. The aims of this study were to develop a theoretical model of LST total body water (TBW) content and to examine hydration effects with empirically derived model coefficients and then to experimentally test the model's prediction that, in healthy adults, LST hydration is not constant but varies as a function of extra- and intracellular water distribution (E/I). The initial phase involved TBW/LST model development and application with empirically derived model coefficients. Model predictions were then tested in a cross-sectional study of 215 healthy adults. LST was measured by DEXA, extracellular water (ECW) by NaBr dilution, intracellular water (ICW) by whole body (40)K counting, and TBW by (2)H(2)O dilution. TBW estimates, calculated as ECW + ICW, were highly correlated with (r = 0.97, SEE = 2.1 kg, P < 0.001) and showed no significant bias compared with TBW measured by (2)H(2)O. Model-predicted TBW/LST was almost identical to experimentally derived values (means +/- SD) in the total group (0.767 vs. 0.764 +/- 0.028). LST hydration was significantly correlated with E/I (total group, r = 0.30, SEE = 0.027, P < 0.001). Although E/I increased with age (men, r = 0.48; women, r = 0.37; both P < 0.001), the association between TBW/LST and age was nonsignificant. Hydration of the DEXA-derived LST compartment is thus not constant but varies predictably with ECW and ICW distribution. This observation has implications for the accuracy of body fat measurements by DEXA and the use of TBW as a means of checking DEXA system calibration.  相似文献

Body composition in birds was evaluated indirectly by 18O and 2H dilution. Body composition was determined by whole-body chemical analysis of eight adult roosters (Gallus gallus). In vivo measurements of total body water (TBW) were carried out using doubly labeled water (2H2 18O). Estimated dilution spaces using both the plateau and intercept approaches were compared with the results obtained by carcass lyophilization. Both 18O and 2H slightly overestimated TBW compared with the results obtained by lyophilization, by 2.2%+/-1.9% and 5.7%+/-0.2%, respectively; both differences were statistically significant (P<0.01). The difference between these isotope estimations was significant (P<0.001). However, isotope dilution spaces and TBW were highly correlated. There was a strong inverse relationship between total body fat and TBW percentages (r2=0.98, P<0.0001). The relation between TBW and body protein was significant. Water content in lean body mass (72.8%) obtained in our study was very close to that reported in mammals, demonstrating no fundamental difference in tissue water content between birds and mammals. Estimated body fat and protein values from isotopic dilution did not significantly differ from values obtained by direct chemical analysis (P>0.05), except for body fat in the Pace and Rathbun approach (Table 3). Although estimation of TBW and body composition by isotope dilution is time consuming and expensive, deuterium offers a reliable and low-cost alternative compared with 18O. The advantage of in vivo estimation of TBW with isotopic dilution in combination with the regression approach is that it permits repeated measurements of body composition on the same birds under laboratory and free-living conditions.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the accuracy of percent body fat (%fat) estimates from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, air-displacement plethysmography (ADP), and total body water (TBW) against a criterion four-compartment (4C) model in overweight and obese children. A volunteer sample of 30 children (18 male and 12 female), age of (mean +/- SD) 14.10 +/- 1.83 yr, body mass index of 31.6 +/- 5.5 kg/m, and %fat (4C model) of 41.2 +/- 8.2%, was assessed. Body density measurements were converted to %fat estimates by using the general equation of Siri (ADPSiri) (Siri WE. Techniques for Measuring Body Composition. 1961) and the age- and gender-specific constants of Lohman (ADPLoh) (Lohman TG. Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews. 1986). TBW measurements were converted to %fat estimates by assuming that water accounts for 73% of fat-free mass (TBW73) and by utilizing the age- and gender-specific water contents of Lohman (TBWLoh). All estimates of %fat were highly correlated with those of the 4C model (r > or = 0.95, P < 0.001; SE < or = 2.14). For %fat, the total error and mean difference +/- 95% limits of agreement compared with the 4C model were 2.50, 1.8 +/- 3.5 (ADPSiri); 1.82, -0.04 +/- 3.6 (ADPLoh); 2.86, -2.0 +/- 4.1 (TBW73); 1.90, -0.3 +/- 3.8 (TBWLoh); and 2.74, 1.9 +/- 4.0 DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), respectively. In conclusion, in overweight and obese children, ADPLoh and TBWLoh were the most accurate methods of measuring %fat compared with a 4C model. However, all methods under consideration produced similar limits of agreement.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed to assess the effects of subclinical hypothyroidism on body composition (BC). SUBJECTS: Thirty-one women (age: 37 +/- 9.9 years) with a wide range of body mass index (BMI) were studied. Subclinical hypothyroidism was defined by a basal TSH > or = 4 mU/L and/or TRH stimulated peak > or = 30 mU/L. MEASUREMENTS: For each subject, weight, height, BMI, multifrequency bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) and D2O and NaBr dilution tests were performed to assessed total body water (TBW) and extracellular water (ECW). Thyroid function (basal and TRH stimulated TSH, free T3, and free T4) were determined from fasting blood samples for all subjects. Total body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were used to measure fat mass (FM) and lean mass (Lean). RESULTS: The results of BIS were compared with the TBW and ECW estimated by the dilution techniques on the same individuals. The correlation was R2 = 0.65 for impedance at 5 kHz and ECW by NaBr and R2 = 0.72 for impedance at 100 kHz and TBW by D2O. Intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as differences between TBW and ECW measured by dilution methods. Percent of ECW and ICW were related to BMI (ANOVA, p < 0.001). No difference in TBW, body water distribution and body composition related to thyroid function was demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS: In our patients affected with subclinical hypothyroidism, with or without obesity, only obesity appeared related to TBW, ECW and ICW; the subclinical hypothyroidism, on the contrary, had no effect on compartments of body fluids. Bioimpedance is a valid tool to assess body fluid distribution in subclinical hypothyroidism.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were 1) to determine the compartmentation of body water in horses by using indicator dilution techniques and 2) to simultaneously measure bioelectrical impedance to current flow at impulse current frequencies of 5 and 200 kHz to formulate predictive equations that could be used to estimate total body water (TBW), extracellular fluid volume (ECFV), and intracellular fluid volume (ICFV). Eight horses and ponies weighing from 214 to 636 kg had catheters placed into the left and right jugular veins. Deuterium oxide, sodium thiocyanate, and Evans blue were infused for the measurement of TBW, ECFV, and plasma volume (PV), respectively. Bioelectrical impedance was measured by using a tetrapolar electrode configuration, with electrode pairs secured above the knee and hock. Measured TBW, ECFV, and PV were 0.677 +/- 0.022, 0.253 +/- 0.006, and 0.040 +/- 0.002 l/kg body mass, respectively. Strong linear correlations were determined among measured variables that allowed for the prediction of TBW, ECFV, ICFV, and PV from measures of horse length or height and impedance. It is concluded that bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) can be used to improve the predictive accuracy of noninvasive estimates of ECFV and PV in euhydrated horses at rest.  相似文献

The body composition of living gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) can be accurately predicted from a two-step model that involves measurement of total body water (TBW) by 2H or 3H dilution and application of predictive relationships between body components and TBW that were derived empirically by slaughter chemical analysis. TBW was overestimated by both 2HHO and 3HHO dilution; mean overestimates were 2.8 +/- 0.9% (SE) with 2H and 4.0 +/- 0.6% with 3H. The relationships for prediction of total body fat (TBF), protein (TBP), gross energy (TBGE), and ash (TBA) were as follows: %TBF = 105.1 - 1.47 (%TBW); %TBP = 0.42 (%TBW) - 4.75; TBGE (MJ) = 40.8 (mass in kg) - 48.5 (TBW in kg) - 0.4; and TBA (kg) = 0.1 - 0.008 (mass in kg) + 0.05 (TBW in kg). These relationships are applicable to gray seals of both sexes over a wide range of age and body conditions, and they predict the body composition of gray seals more accurately than the predictive equations derived from ringed seals (Pusa hispida) (Stirling et al., Can. J. Zool. 53: 1021-1027, 1975) and from the equation of Pace and Rathbun (J. Biol. Chem. 158: 685-691, 1945), which has been reported to be generally applicable to mammals.  相似文献

With climate change resulting in unpredictable sea ice conditions between years, it is crucial to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the subsequent effects on Arctic marine ecosystems. Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) play a key role in the Arctic marine food web, serving as a food source that is estimated to contribute up to 75 % of energy transfer to higher trophic levels. To investigate Arctic cod residency and distribution in Resolute Bay (74°44′N, 095°04′W), 85 individuals from four locations in the bay were captured, measured, weighed, implanted with acoustic tags and subsequently tracked on an acoustic array of 49 receivers. Two main periods of residence in the bay were identified, the first in open water and the second under ice cover, and both concluded with a collective mass departure of fish. A generalised linear mixed model was used to investigate the influence of variables on Arctic cod presence/absence in the bay, indicating that ingress and egress were influenced by environmental changes, particularly those associated with the transition from open-water to the ice-covered period. Timing and distribution, during the study period, appeared to be influenced by a combination of physiological acclimation, and a balance between resource availability and refuge from predators. Receiver site Residence Index (RI) analysis revealed strong site fidelity of fish towards the northern areas of the bay, and this behaviour was consistent between tagging groups and individuals, indicating that the majority of tagged cod were representative of a single school. This study represents the first employment of acoustic telemetry to monitor the movements of individual Arctic cod over 9 months, incorporating both open-water and ice-covered periods.  相似文献

Two types of fat, represented by cod liver oil and lard, were added at various levels to the diet of rainbow trout. The food intake of the trout and their growth rate were measured. The results indicated that when cod liver oil was used as the fat supplement, the amount and the water temperature affected food intake and weight gain; fish fed on lard showed only a slight loss of appetite.  相似文献

Arctic cod, Boreogadus saida (Lepechin, 1774), is a nodal species in Arctic marine foodwebs as an important prey of many birds, marine mammals, and other fishes, as well as an abundant predator of zooplankton and epibenthic fauna. We examined the summer diet of Arctic cod across a latitudinal gradient extending from the southern limit of their distribution in the eastern Bering Sea to the northern margins of the eastern Chukchi Sea (ECS) continental shelf. Specimens were collected from demersal and pelagic trawls conducted between 1999 and 2012, and across a range of predator sizes (3–26 cm). Arctic cod diets vary with body size and between regions within the study area, and appear to vary between years in the eastern Bering Sea, indicating opportunistic feeding habits. Constrained Analysis of Principal Coordinates was conducted on ECS demersal samples and revealed consumption of fish and decapod crustacea were positively correlated with Arctic cod length while consumption of euphausiids and copepods had the opposite relationship. The demersal Arctic cod diet in the northern latitudes of the ECS was dominated by copepod consumption (47% by weight, %W), but copepods were less important (12–26%W) in the central and southern latitudes of the ECS and in the northern and eastern Bering Sea—areas where diets were more varied in their composition. High levels of variation in the diet of Arctic cod highlights the need to monitor Arctic cod diets to identify consistently dominant prey types and potential future changes to trophic relationships related to climate change or increasing anthropogenic activity.  相似文献

To study the effects of microgravity on the mechanisms involved in the regulation of body hydrous status, total body water (TBW), plasma volume (PV), and its main regulating hormones (plasma renin, aldosterone, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)) were determined, by isotopic dilution, Dill and Costill's formula, and radio-immunologic dosages, in 9 male subjects submitted to a 90-d head-down bed rest (HDBR). ADH was determined in 24 h urinary collection as well as osmolality, sodium, and potassium. Body mass decreased (-2.8 +/- 0.8 kg) as well as TBW(-7.2% +/- 0.9%, i.e., -2.6 +/- 0.7 kg) and PV (-4.7% +/- 1.8%). Renin and aldosterone were enhanced (+109.0% +/- 15.4% and +87.2% +/- 38.9%, respectively). Simultaneously, we observed a decrease in ANP (-33.2% +/- 20.4%). Other variables, including ADH, were not affected by HDBR. Body mass and TBW decrease (and consequently lean body mass) are associated with muscle atrophy. Renin, aldostrerone, and ANP modifications are well explained by the decrease in PV, which was not enough to induce ADH changes. It suggests that in man, the main regulatory factor for ADH secretion is osmolality, when PV is modestly and progressively decreased without arterial pressure modification, which was the case in the present protocol.  相似文献

The potential of bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) for assessing nutritional status in spaceflight was tested in two head-down-tilt bed-rest studies. BIS-predicted extracellular water (ECW), intracellular water (ICW), and total body water (TBW) measured using knee-elbow electrode placement were compared with deuterium and bromide dilution (DIL) volumes in healthy, 19- to 45-yr-old subjects. BIS was accurate during 44 h of head-down tilt with mean differences (BIS - DIL) of 0-0.1 kg for ECW, 0.3-0.5 for ICW, and 0.4-0.6 kg for TBW (n = 28). At 44 h, BIS followed the within-individual change in body water compartments with a relative prediction error (standard error of the estimate/baseline volume) of 2.0-3.6% of water space. In the second study, BIS did not detect an acute decrease (-1.41 +/- 0.91 kg) in ICW secondary to 48 h of a protein-free, 800 kcal/day diet (n = 18). BIS's insensitivity to ICW losses may be because they were predominantly (65%) localized to the trunk and/or because there was a general failure of BIS to measure ICW independently of ECW and TBW. BIS may have potential for measuring nutritional status during spaceflight, but its limitations in precision and insensitivity to acute ICW changes warrant further validation studies.  相似文献
