This study focuses on genetic variation of brown trout Salmo trutta populations of the Adriatic and Danubian drainages in Switzerland. The allozyme and other protein loci data show a major replacement of native stocks from the Adriatic drainages by introduced hatchery trout of Atlantic basin origin. In most samples, diagnostic alleles for the Adriatic form of Salmo trutta f. fario and for the marbled trout Salmo trutta marmoratus are found at very low frequencies (f<0.15). Taking into account previous genetic studies on brown trout of this basin, the Danubian samples are not heavily contaminated with foreign alleles. The results are consistent with records of local stocking activities which account in part for the high introgression rates of Atlantic alleles into local populations of the Adriatic drainages. In addition, introgression is enhanced by a decrease of natural reproduction which is caused by a deterioration of trout habitats through human activities. Furthermore, a third mechanism is proposed that may contribute to the high introgression rates observed: if Atlantic trout are introduced, the reproductive barriers between the two native forms, marbled trout and Adriatic fario respectively, break down. Atlantic trout apparently hybridize with both native forms and generate gene flow between them. In some parts of Adriatic drainages in Switzerland, the patterns of introgression and hybridization are further complicated by introduction of trout from the Danubian system. Alleles of the marbled trout are also found in the samples of the Danubian drainage system. These are due to stocking activities across the watershed.  相似文献

European grayling populations in Bavaria have shown steady declines during the last 10–20years. In order to provide guidelines for conservation strategies and future management programs, we investigated the genetic structure of 15 grayling populations originating from three major Central European drainages (the Danube, the Elbe and the Rhine/Main) using 20 microsatellite loci. Genetic divergence between the three drainage systems was substantial as illustrated by highly significant heterogeneity of genotype frequencies, high number of drainage-specific private alleles, high between-drainage F ST values, high assignment success of individuals to their drainage of origin and the high bootstrap support for the genetic distance based drainage-specific population clusters. In agreement with earlier studies, microsatellites revealed relatively low levels of intrapopulational genetic diversity in comparison to the overall level of variation across populations. Maximum likelihood methods using the coalescent approach revealed that the proportion of common ancestors was generally high in native populations and that the estimates of N e were correlated with the genetic diversity parameters in all drainages. The number of effective immigrants per generation (N e m) was less than one for all pairwise comparisons of populations within the drainages, indicating restricted interpopulational gene flow. Based on these findings we recommend a drainage and sub-drainage specific conservation of grayling populations in order to preserve their overall genetic diversity and integrity. For large-scale stocking actions to supplement declining or to restore extinct populations, creation of separate broodstocks for major conservation units (ESUs and MUs) is warranted. 通过大面积的野外踏查、种群调查和室内实验,分析了横断山区干旱河谷乡土灌木川滇蔷薇在岷江流域、大渡河流域、雅砻江流域和金沙江流域的分布、生长繁殖特征及其在流域间的差异。结果表明,川滇蔷薇广泛分布于四大流域,海拔范围1700m至3700 m,所调查的18个种群生长状况良好,株高2 m以上,明显高于群落中的其他灌木。主成分分析表明,地理位置(流域、纬度、经度、海拔)和土壤(全碳、总有机碳、全氮、pH值)是影响川滇蔷薇生长繁殖的主要因子,其中地理位置的影响更大。生长特征包括株高、地径和冠幅在18个种群间差异显著,但在不同的流域间差异不显著。丛萌生数在种群间差异显著,其差异性较其他生长特征弱,但丛萌生数在不同流域间差异显著:岷江流域显著大于雅砻江流域,金沙江流域显著大于大渡河流域。与生长和无性繁殖相比,有性繁殖特征表现出更强的空间差异性,果实重量、瘦果重量以及种子活力在居群间差异极显著,果实重量和种子活力在不同流域间差异显著,但瘦果重量在流域间的差异不显著。综合分析表明,川滇蔷薇生长和繁殖特征在横断山区干旱河谷存在较强空间差异性,较强无性繁殖是种群持续存活的保证,而有性繁殖及其强烈的空间差异为种群适应多变环境以及地理空间扩展提供了遗传基础。  相似文献

Synopsis In Venezuela, guppies,Poecilia reticulata, are found in a diversity of aquatic ecosystems fringing the western slope of the eastern Andes. These inland drainages are associated with large between-site variation in both physical and biotic environments. Numbers of potential guppy predators vary greatly between low diversity piedmont streams and high diversity llanos swamps. We analyze geographic variation in several phenotypic traits associated with conspicuousness of male guppies as an independent test of Haskins' (Haskins et al. 1961) hypothesis of natural balance between sexual selection (driving male conspicuousness) and predation (driving crypsis). Four sites were compared: a diverse llanos swamp (high predation), two Andean piedmont streams (intermediate and low predation), and a spring pool located south of Venezuela's Paría Peninsula (no aquatic predators). Because tropical wet and dry seasons are associated with varying degrees of environmental change at these sites, within-site seasonal samples provided an additional test of the role of selective predation on Male phenotypes. Phenotypic traits associated with both size and coloration supported the sexual selection/predation hypothesis. male guppies from the spring were generally more colorful than male guppies from inland drainages. Males from the diverse swamp site were smaller and less colorful than guppies from other sites. Males from the swamp population were smallest and least colorful during the early dry season, when diurnal aquatic piscivores were more diverse and abundant. Dominant spot pigments at each site were generally those that provided greatest contrast with the predominant environmental background color, lending further evidence that coloration patterns in male guppies enhance conspicuousness.  相似文献

1. Data from the literature were used to document colonization patterns by introduced freshwater fishes in 125 drainages across temperate North America. We analysed this data set to quantify susceptibility to invasion, success of the invaders and changes in species richness.
2. Drainages with a high number of impoundments, large basin area and low native species diversity had the greatest number of introduced species. Those drainages containing few native fishes exhibited great variation in the number of invaders, while waters with a rich native fauna contained few introduced species. However, this pattern did not differ significantly from random simulations because the pool of potential invaders is greater for drainages with low species richness.
3. In most drainages, there were more introduced than imperilled or extirpated species, suggesting that invaders tend to increase overall species richness.
4. These patterns suggest that North American fish communities are not saturated with species, but instead, are capable of supporting higher levels of diversity if the pool of potential colonists and the rate of colonization from that pool is increased.  相似文献

The presence of a widespread exotic raises the question as to whether the successful invasion can be attributed to spread after a single introduction or is the product of multiple introductions. The plains killifish, Fundulus zebrinus, is native to the western Great Plains of the United States but is also found throughout the Colorado River basin. We surveyed five introduced populations for genetic variation in allozymes and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in order to compare the genetic structure of these populations with those from across the native range. Our survey revealed two genetically distinct stocks of introduced F. zebrinus, one in the San Juan and one in the Yampa and Colorado drainages. Each stock corresponds to at least one unique introduction event. In addition, data available from a genetic survey of the native range allowed us to identify the sources of these introduced populations. The combination of allozyme and mtDNA data for the San Juan population indicated that the most probable source for this population was the Pecos drainage of New Mexico and Texas. The Yampa and Colorado populations seem to be derived from the western Arkansas drainage, although the allozyme data indicated that another nearby drainage(s) might have also served as a source for the Colorado population.  相似文献

We used the widely distributed freshwater fish, perch (Perca fluviatilis), to investigate the postglacial colonization routes of freshwater fishes in Europe. Genetic variability within and among drainages was assessed using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop sequencing and RAPD markers from 55 populations all over Europe as well as one Siberian population. High level of structuring for both markers was observed among drainages and regions, while little differentiation was seen within drainages and regions. Phylogeographic relationships among European perch were determined from the distribution of 35 mtDNA haplotypes detected in the samples. In addition to a distinct southern European group, which includes a Greek and a southern Danubian population, three major groups of perch are observed: the western European drainages, the eastern European drainages including the Siberian population, and Norwegian populations from northern Norway, and western side of Oslofjord. Our data suggest that present perch populations in western and northern Europe were colonized from three main refugia, located in southeastern, northeastern and western Europe. In support of this, nested cladistic analysis of mtDNA clade and nested clade distances suggested historical range expansion as the main factor determining geographical distribution of haplotypes. The Baltic Sea has been colonized from all three refugia, and northeastern Europe harbours descendants from both eastern European refugia. In the upper part of the Danube lineages from the western European and the southern European refugia meet. The southern European refugium probably did not contribute to the recolonization of other western and northern European drainages after the last glaciation. However, phylogenetic analyses suggest that the southern European mtDNA lineage is the most ancient, and therefore likely to be the founder of all present perch lineages. The colonization routes used by perch probably also apply to other freshwater species with similar distribution patterns.  相似文献

The greenside darter Etheostoma blennioides is a small-bodied benthic stream fish that occurs in multiple drainages of the eastern USA. Previous studies have revealed some morphological differentiations among greensides from isolated drainage systems but growth relationships among functional morphological characteristics have not been examined within and between populations. Specifically, we tested for differences in functional morphology and allometric distinctions in morphological growth trajectories between greenside populations from two drainages, the Osage River and White River. Morphological differences between individuals of the two drainages included more dorso-ventrally compressed bodies, longer snouts and larger jaw features in White River darters. Furthermore, body depth, snout length and jaw width grow at significantly different trajectories in individuals of the two drainages. Individuals of the White River drainage (generally a higher gradient stream system) become comparatively more streamlined and develop proportionately larger feeding related traits during growth. These results suggest that individuals of both drainages share a similar morphology during early life but deviate during continued development and this may be partially due to environmentally induced plastic response. This study represents a novel approach for comparing morphological development among fish populations and presents environmental factors (e.g., stream gradient and elevation) that potentially influence functional characteristics.  相似文献

The freshwater Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum (Atherinidae) has a broad northern and south-eastern Australian distribution, and has been divided into two sub-species. Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum fulvus occurs in eastern and western flowing drainages of the southeast, while C. s. stercusmuscarum occurs in north eastern and northern flowing drainages. Four populations of each sub-species were sampled from different river systems to examine if genetic diversity was consistent with this nomenclature or a previously proposed vicariance hypothesis. Allozyme data did not support the notion that the subspecies were genetically distinct, but the mtDNA data showed that haplotypes from one sub-species, regardless of geography, were reciprocally monophyletic to haplotypes of the other subspecies. Thus, mtDNA genetic diversity was partitioned by prevailing taxonomy and the data suggest that C. s. fulvus populations in eastern and western flowing drainages may have had a relatively recent connection subsequently interrupted by geological events.  相似文献

Identifying mechanisms of reproductive isolation is key to understanding speciation. Among the putative mechanisms underlying reproductive isolation, sperm–female interactions (post‐mating–prezygotic barriers) are arguably the hardest to identify, not least because these are likely to operate at the cellular or molecular level. Yet sperm–female interactions offer great potential to prevent the transfer of genetic information between different populations at the initial stages of speciation. Here, we provide a preliminary test for the presence of a putative post‐mating–prezygotic barrier operating between three populations of Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata), an internally fertilizing fish that inhabits streams with different levels of connectivity across Trinidad. We experimentally evaluate the effect of female ovarian fluid on sperm velocity (a predictor of competitive fertilization success) according to whether males and females were from the same (native) or different (foreign) populations. Our results reveal the potential for ovarian fluid to act as a post‐mating–prezygotic barrier between two populations from different drainages, but also that the strength of this barrier is different among populations. This result may explain the previous finding that, in some populations, sperm from native males have precedence over foreign sperm, which could eventually lead to reproductive isolation between these populations.  相似文献

With the extensive spread of invasive species throughout North America and Europe there is an urgent need to better understand the morphological and physiological characteristics of successful invasive plants and the evolutionary mechanisms that allow introduced species to become invasive. Most ecological studies have focused on morphological differences and changes in community dynamics, and physiological studies have typically explored the differences between native and invasive species. In this study, 15 different genotypes of Phalaris arundinacea from both its native (European) and invasive (North American) range were grown in a common garden experiment to monitor the physiological differences between native and invasive genotypes. Here we present data that suggests high variability exists in the physiological traits among genotypes of P. arundinacea, yet genotypes from the native range are not necessarily physiologically inferior to the hybridized invasive genotypes. Previous work has shown that multiple introductions of P. arundinacea from various European locations to the United States resulted in numerous hybridization events, yielding more genetic variability and phenotypic plasticity in the invasive range. Of the genotypes studied, both morphological and physiological traits of genotypes with French origin were significantly different from the plants from the Czech Republic, North Carolina, and Vermont. The lack of clear differences between native and invasive genotypes indicates that physiological traits may be highly conserved in P. arundinacea and enhanced photosynthetic rates are not indicative of successful invasive genotypes. Instead, morphological traits and defensive secondary compound metabolism may play a more important role in the success of P. arundinacea within its invasive range, and patterns of genetic variation in physiological traits between invasive and native range may be more important than the mean traits of each region when explaining reed canarygrass’ invasive potential in North America.  相似文献

The present study reports the distribution of a 35-bp mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop tandemly repeated sequence in the populations of a North American freshwater catfish, Pylodictis olivaris, and the important role of a past geological event in the phylogeographic pattern of this species. A total of 330 individuals of flathead catfish, representing 34 drainages throughout the species' native range in the United States, were collected. While more than 70% of individuals sampled from the Southeastern Gulf Coast drainages were characterized by the presence of a 35-bp mtDNA D-loop tandem repeat proximal to the 5′ end, more than 95% of samples from the Mississippi River and its tributaries, as well as from the drainages of the Southwest Gulf Coast region, lack this tandem repeat. Concomitantly, phylogenetic analyses revealed the existence of two distinct matrilineal lineages (lineage I and II) of P. olivaris, which were estimated to have diverged from a common ancestor sometime between 0.70 and 2.05 myr ago. While one lineage is comprised of samples from the Mississippi River and its tributaries and rivers draining to the Southwest Gulf Coast, the other lineage is comprised of samples from the Southeastern Gulf Coast drainages. Each lineage also has two sub-lineages, which also showed geographic specificity.  相似文献

Between-population gene flow was estimated in neighbouring freshwater and anadromous Salmo trutta populations from Asturias, Northern Spain. Populations from the same drainage showed a high mean level of gene flow. Gene flow was also found between populations from different drainages and was negatively related to the distance between river mouths. The strength of the homing orientation of migratory individuals (sea trout) is discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis The life history characteristics of tule perch were compared within and among populations in three drainages with substantially different environmental conditions. Within populations there were, in general, substantial increases in brood size, size of young, brood weight, and gonadal-somatic index (GSI) with age and with size of female. In at least one population there was a trade-off between the number and size of young produced. However, in a lake where individual growth was very slow, brood weight, GSI, and other life history characters showed decreasing trends with age. Among populations in isolated drainages, female length at first reproduction and longevity varied directly and mean brood size varied inversely with environmental predictability. Morphological and geological evidence and some comparative litter characteristics suggest that life history differences among populations in isolated drainages are in part genetic.  相似文献

【目的】紫茎泽兰是我国重要的入侵杂草,对我国生态环境和农、林、牧业造成重大危害。本研究通过比较紫茎泽兰原产地与入侵地种群地上部抗虫物质含量的差异及其对泽兰实蝇寄生的响应,为探明紫茎泽兰入侵种群持续扩张的化学生态机制提供依据。【方法】选取5个紫茎泽兰种群(3个中国云南种群:C1,C2,C3;2个墨西哥种群:M1,M2),比较原产地和入侵地种群地上部分碳氮比、单宁类(单宁酸、儿茶素、鞣花酸)和类黄酮物质(槲皮素、异槲皮素、山奈酚)含量差异,以及泽兰实蝇寄生前后这些抗虫物质的含量变化。【结果】入侵地种群地上部分碳氮比不同程度地低于原产地种群,茎秆部位差异最明显。紫茎泽兰入侵地种群的单宁类和类黄酮物质含量亦低于原产地种群,其中,芽尖部位单宁酸和儿茶素含量差异尤为明显,分别比原产地种群低26.4%和32.3%。泽兰实蝇寄生后,原产地和入侵地种群单宁类和类黄酮物质含量基本呈上升趋势,其中,M1种群寄生植株在虫瘿破膜前,儿茶素含量比未寄生植株升高了163.2%。【结论】紫茎泽兰入侵种群在抗虫特性方面产生了资源再分配的适应性变化,有利于其在新生境天敌缺乏条件下的持续扩张。虽然泽兰实蝇寄生会诱导紫茎泽兰原产地种群和入侵地种群抗虫物质的增加,但原产地种群增加的幅度更大,表明紫茎泽兰入侵后对专食性天敌胁迫的适应性明显下降。  相似文献

Analysis of mitochondrial ( ND-1/3/4 genes) and nuclear ( GH-1 gene, four microsatellite loci) DNA markers of European grayling Thymallus thymallus populations identified strong genetic differentiation between the Rhine/Main, Elbe and Danube drainages in Bavaria, as a result of both present processes and past history. The Danube and the Main-Elbe group diverged about five times earlier than the populations of Main and Elbe. These data suggest that exchange and transfer of grayling stocking material between these drainages should be avoided, to maintain the genetic diversity and integrity of populations.  相似文献

Species with a wide geographical distribution are often composed of distinct subgroups which may be adapted to their local environment. European trout (Salmo trutta species complex) provide an example of such a complex consisting of several genetically and ecologically distinct forms. However, trout populations are strongly influenced by human activities, and it is unclear to what extent neutral and adaptive genetic differences have persisted. We sampled 30 Swiss trout populations from heterogeneous environments along replicated altitudinal gradients in three major European drainages. More than 850 individuals were genotyped at 18 microsatellite loci which included loci diagnostic for evolutionary lineages and candidate markers associated with temperature tolerance, reproductive timing and immune defence. We find that the phylogeographic structure of Swiss trout populations has not been completely erased by stocking. Distinct genetic clusters corresponding to the different drainages could be identified, although nonindigenous alleles were clearly present, especially in the two Mediterranean drainages. We also still detected neutral genetic differentiation within rivers which was often associated with the geographical distance between populations. Five loci showed evidence of divergent selection between populations with several drainage-specific patterns. Lineage-diagnostic markers, a marker linked to a quantitative trait locus for upper temperature tolerance in other salmonids and a marker linked to the major histocompatibility class I gene were implicated in local adaptation and some patterns were associated with altitude. In contrast, tentative evidence suggests a signal of balancing selection at a second immune relevant gene (TAP2). Our results confirm the persistence of both neutral and potentially adaptive genetic differences between trout populations in the face of massive human-mediated dispersal.  相似文献

The lily leaf beetle (Lilioceris lilii), indigenous to Eurasia, was first detected in North America on the island of Montréal, Québec, Canada in 1943. Populations remained limited to the original site of introduction but since 1978 the distribution of this species has expanded in all directions. To date L. lilii has only been recorded feeding on cultivated lilies in urban and rural areas. But as the beetle spreads its geographic range it could encounter native lily species. The objectives of this study were to determine the suitability of two indigenous North American lily species (Lilium canadense and L. philadelphicum) as host for L. lilii, and to assess the degree of infestation of wild lily populations. Measurement of fitness parameters under laboratory conditions (survival, development time, size) indicated that L. lilii has the capacity to develop on both species of native lilies. In the provinces of Québec and Ontario eight of the 20 wild populations of L. canadense sampled were infested. In contrast, L. philadelphicum was not attacked by the alien beetle. A number of native lilies are already endangered in North America, so there is an urgent necessity to address the ecological impact of L. lilii in natural ecosystems.  相似文献

We examined genetic structure and levels of connectivity among subpopulations within each of four cryptic species belonging to the freshwater mussel genus Velesunio. We used allozymes and a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene to examine genetic variation in populations from isolated waterholes, belonging to four major inland drainages in eastern Australia. Based on evidence from other invertebrates in the region we predicted that, in each species, we would find evidence of historical connectivity among populations from different drainages. This was clearly not the case, as for the two species that occurred in more than one drainage there was evidence of both current and past restriction to gene flow. Moreover, given the potential for extensive dispersal of these mussels through the river systems during flood times via their fish hosts, we predicted low levels of genetic variation among populations from waterholes in the same drainage. Contrary to our expectations, all four species showed some evidence of restricted gene flow among waterholes within drainages. This suggests that either (a) mussel larvae are not produced during flood times, when their fish hosts would be free to move between waterholes, or (b) mussel larvae are attached to their hosts at these times, but the fish movement is limited between waterholes.  相似文献

Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis), a native species in China, has populated Continental Europe and North America since 1912. In this paper, the nucleotide variation in the fragments of mitochondrial COII (693 bp), Cytb (766 bp), and nucleotide ITS (706 bp) was analyzed in native (Yantgze, Yellow, and Liaohe Rivers in China) and colonized (Elbe, Rhine, and Thames Rivers in Europe, and San Francisco Bay in North America) populations of the Chinese mitten crab. The major findings are as follows. First, the genetic variability in the native populations is higher than that in the colonized European and North American populations, with the exception of the Elbe River population, which possesses a similar level of variability with the native populations. Second, a remarkable loss of singletons has been associated with the colonization of Chinese mitten crabs. Third, the AMOVA and F ST results demonstrate that there are no significant genetic differentiations among the populations from the three continents, but there is a significant differentiation between pairwise populations within and among continents. Fourth, it is found that expansion-drift and gene flow pattern are involved in the European populations. The neutrality test and R 2 statistics suggest that a moderate founder population exists in the colonized populations, and only the Yangtze River population has undergone a recent population expansion. Finally, the results demonstrate that the European populations originate from multiple rivers in China on multiple occasions. The San Francisco population originates from both the native Chinese populations and the colonized European populations, most likely the Thames population.  相似文献
