In this paper we considered the problem of internal bone remodeling induced by casting a broken femur. It is shown that, after the removal of the plastercast, the healing bone is either becoming more porous and less stiff or it is osteoporotic. The result is theoretical, based on a theory of internal bone remodeling proposed by Hegedus and Cowin (Journal of Elasticity 6, 1976, 337-352).  相似文献

During day-to-day activities, many bones in the axial and appendicular skeleton are subjected to repetitive, cyclic loading that often results directly in an increased risk of bone fracture. In clinical orthopedics, trabecular fatigue fractures are observed as compressive stress fractures in the proximal femur, vertebrae, calcaneus and tibia, that are often preceded by buckling and bending of microstructural elements (Müller et al. in J Biomechanics 31:150 1998; Gibson in J Biomechanics 18:317-328 1985; Gibson and Ashby in Cellular solids 1997; Lotz et al. in Osteoporos Int 5:252-261 1995; Carter and Hayes in Science 194:1174-1176 1976). However, the relative importance of bone density and architecture in the etiology of these fractures are poorly understood and consequently not investigated from a biomechanical point of view. In the present contribution, an attempt is made to formulate a bone-plate buckling theory using Cowin's concepts of adaptive elasticity (Cowin and Hegedus in J Elast 6:313-325 1976; Hegedus and Cowin J Elast 6:337-352 1976). In particular, the buckling problem of a Kirchhoff-Love bone plate is investigated numerically by using the finite difference method and an iterative solving approach (Chen in Comput Methods Appl Mech Eng 167:91-99 1998; Hildebland in Introduction to numerical analysis 1974; Richtmyer and Morton in Difference methods for initial-value problems 1967).  相似文献

The problem of the evolution of bone inhomogeneity around a hole in a plate of bone with orthotropic symmetry is considered. The internal remodeling theory of Cowin and Hegedus is employed to show the existence of final inhomogeneity following stress concentration. The speed of remodeling around the hole and its variation with respect to distance is investigated. Results indicate that the effect of stress concentration around a hole is slightly less pronounced if bone is considered orthotropic rather than transversely isotropic. The speed of remodeling is found to be unaffected but the amplitude of inhomogeneity with respect to distance drops and disappears slightly faster if bone is considered orthotropic.  相似文献

Theoretical predictions of internal bone remodeling around an elliptical hole are studied. The internal remodeling theory due to Cowin and Hegedus is employed. The bone is modeled as an initially homogeneous adaptive elastic plate with an elliptical hole under a superposed steady compressive load. It is shown that there will exist a final inhomogeneous remodeling distribution around the hole that will disappear away from the hole. The remodeling is such that the compressive stress concentration causes the bone structure to evolve to one of greater density and stiffer elastic coefficients. The speed of remodeling around the hole and its variation with respect to distance is investigated and discussed. It is shown that the rate of bone reinforcement in the area of compressive stress concentration is much higher than the rate of bone resorption in the area of existing tensile stress. Special cases of a circular hole and vertical and horizontal slots are studied and discussed.  相似文献

Optical melting curves of seven DNA dumbbells with the 16 base-pair duplex sequence 5'G-C-A-T-A-G-A-T-G-A-G-A-A-T-G-C3' linked on both ends by Tn (n = 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 14) loops measured in 30, 70, and 120 mM Na+ are analyzed in terms of the numerically exact statistical thermodynamic model of DNA melting. The construction and characterization of these molecules were described in the previous paper (Amaratunga et al., 1992). As was recently reported for hairpins (T. M. Paner, M. Amaratunga, M. J. Doktycz, and A. S. Benight, 1990, Biopolymers, Vol. 29, pp. 1715-1734) theoretically calculated melting curves were fitted to experimental curves by simultaneously adjusting the parameters representing loop and circle formation to optimize the fits. The systematically determined empirical parameters provide evaluations of the free energies of hairpin loop formation delta Gloop (n) and single-strand circles delta Gcircle (N), as a function of end loop size, n = 2-14, and circle size, N = 32 + 2n. The dependence of these quantities on solvent ionic strength over the range from 30 to 120 mM Na+ was evaluated. An approximately analytical expression for the partition function Q(T) of the dumbbells was formulated that allowed a means for determining the transition enthalpy delta H degrees and entropy delta S degrees for every dumbbell, revealing the dependence of these quantities on loop size. In this multistate approach a manifold of partially melted intermediate microstates are considered and therefore no assumptions regarding the nature of the melting transitions (that they are two-state) are required. The transition thermodynamic parameters were also determined from a van't Hoff analysis of the melting curves. Comparisons between the results of the multistate analysis and the two-state van't Hoff analysis revealed significant differences for the dumbbells with larger end loops, indicating that the melting transitions of the larger looped dumbbells deviate considerably from two-state behavior. Results are then compared with published melting studies of much larger DNA dumbbells (D. B. Naritsin and Y. L. Lyubchenko, 1990, Journal of Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics, Vol. 8, pp. 1-13), of small hairpins (Paner et al., 1990; M. J. Doktycz, T. M. Paner, M. Amaratunga and A. S. Benight, 1990, Biopolymers, Vol. 30, pp. 829-845) and another dumbbell (A. S. Benight, J. M. Schurr, P. F. Flynn, B. R. Reid, and D. E. Wemmer, 1988) Journal of Molecular Biology, Vol. 200, pp. 377-399).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Under physiological conditions, many polypeptide chains spontaneously fold into discrete and tightly packed three-dimensional structures. The folded polypeptide chain conformation is believed to represent a minimum Gibbs energy of the system, governed by the weak interactions that operate between the amino acid residues and between the residues and the solvent. A semiempirical molecular thermodynamic model is proposed to represent the Gibbs energy of folding of aqueous homopolypeptide systems. The model takes into consideration both the entropy contribution and the enthalpy contribution of folding homopolypeptide chains in aqueous solutions. The entropy contribution is derived from the Flory-Huggins expression for the entropy of mixing. It accounts for the entropy loss in folding a random-coiled polypeptide chain into a specific polypeptide conformation. The enthalpy contribution is derived from a molecular segment-based Non-Random Two Liquid (NRTL) local composition model [H. Renon and J. M. Prausnitz (1968) AIChE J., Vol. 14, pp. 135-142; C.-C. Chen and L. B. Evans (1986) AIChE J., Vol. 32, pp. 444-454], which takes into consideration of the residue-residue, residue-solvent, and solvent-solvent binary physical interactions along with the local compositions of amino acid residues in aqueous homopolypeptides. The UNIFAC group contribution method [A. Fredenslund, R. L. Jones, and J. M. Prausnitz (1975) AIChE J., 21, 1086-1099; A. Fredenslund, J. Gmehling, and P. Rasmussen (1977) Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Using UNIFAC, Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company, Amsterdam], developed originally to estimate the excess Gibbs energy of solutions of small molecules, was used to estimate the NRTL binary interaction parameters. The model yields a hydrophobicity scale for the 20 amino acid side chains, which compares favorably with established scales [Y. Nozaki and C. Tanford (1971) Journal of Biological Chemistry, Vol. 46, pp. 2211-2217; E. B. Leodidis and T. A. Hatton (1990) Journal of Physical Chemistry, Vol. 94, pp. 6411-6420]. In addition, the model generates qualitatively correct thermodynamic constants and it accurately predicts thermodynamically favorable folding of a number of aqueous homopolypeptides from random-coiled states into alpha-helices. The model further facilitates estimation of the Zimm-Bragg helix growth parameter s and the nucleation parameter sigma for amino acid residues [B. H. Zimm and J. K. Bragg (1959) Journal of Chemical Physics, Vol. 31, pp. 526-535]. The calculated values of the two parameters fall into the ranges suggested by Zimm and Bragg.  相似文献

Responses of 74 cerebellar cortical neurons to electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve and its gastric branches and also of the limb nerves were recorded extracellularly in experiments on rats anesthetized with chloralose and pentobarbital. Phasic and tonic unit responses were similar to all types of stimulation, but fewer neurons responded to stimulation of the vagus nerve than to stimulation of the limb nerves. Monosensory neurons responding only to visceral stimulation, were not found. Among cells giving a phasic response, some had a short and others a long latent period. The latent period of responses of all types was longer to vagal stimulation than to stimulation of the limb nerves. The maximal frequency of rhythmic responses to vagal stimulation was 8/sec, compared with 16/sec for stimulation of the limb nerves. Tonic responses of the neurons were excitatory, inhibitory, and mixed. The type of unit response could vary depending on the frequency and repetitiveness of the stimuli but was otherwise independent of the type of stimulation.N. I. Pirogov Vinnitsa Medical Institute. I.
