Nutrient concentrations in current and 1-year-old needles were analyzed annually for 5 years after application of hardened wood ash in 1–4-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands within a range of climate and fertility gradients. At each site, 3000 kg ha–1 hardened wood ash of two types, Nymölla and Perstorp, was applied in a randomized block design. Wood ash Nymölla contained 12 kg ha–1 P, 30 kg ha–1 K, 891 kg ha–1 Ca, 72 kg ha–1 Mg and wood ash Perstorp contained 12 kg ha–1 P, 60 kg ha–1 K, 486 kg ha–1 Ca, and 60 kg ha–1 Mg. The ash was intended to compensate for nutrients removed at the preceding harvest when logging residues were collected and removed from the site (whole-tree harvesting). The climate gradient included four climate zones throughout Sweden and each of these included a fertility gradient of three sites classified according to their ground vegetation type. There were no effects on nutrient concentrations in the needles 1 year after the application of wood ash. Five years after ash application, the concentrations of P, K and Ca in current and 1-year-old needles were higher than in the control plots. The results were consistent over all stands, irrespective of climate zone and fertility status. P and K concentrations were higher in spruce needles from plots treated with Perstorp wood ash, whereas Ca concentrations were higher in those of Nymölla treated plots. Analyses across all study sites revealed a treatment effect in terms of increased ratios of P:N, K:N and Ca:N in 1-year-old needles. The ratio P:N tended to increase with time in the Perstorp wood ash treatment compared with the control. The needle concentrations of Mg and S were not affected by the ash applications. The increase in needle nutrient concentrations after application of hardened wood ash suggests that wood ash recycling could be used in order to replace nutrients removed at whole-tree harvesting.  相似文献

The effect of wood ash applied as a fertiliser (0.25, 0.5 and 1 kg m–2) to nutrient poor sandy soil on 4-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies) growing in small-scale sample plots was studied. Analyses carried out with roots, stems, needles and shoots of different age showed that an increase in the pH level and K and Ca concentrations and a decrease in N and P concentrations in the soil was accompanied by a disbalance of nutrients in tree compartments. Stimulation of pigment synthesis in Norway spruce needles was observed, and no disbalances occurred in the pigment system (Chl a/Chl b, TChl/Car) guaranteeing normal process of photosynthesis. Biomass responses to wood ash application depended on the age of needles and shoots, being only slightly notable in current year organs. Inhibition of height growth of seedlings, but stimulation of root biomass was established.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion of a herbivorous midge larva,Chironomus sp., inhabiting Lake Balaton was measured at two different temperatures. The loss of energy through respiration and that through ammonia excretion were calculated. The daily respiratory energy loss amounted to 655.5 ± 123.8 J g–1 at 17 °C and to 1 160.0 ± 168.4 J g–1 (dry weight) at 25 °C. Mean energy loss through ammonia excretion was about 40% less than through respiration.  相似文献

The chlorophyll, ash, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus levels in seven species of freshwater macrophytes (Juncus effusus L., Iris pseudacorus L., Carex rostrata Stokes, Glyceria maxima (Hartm.) Holmberg, Nuphar lutea (L) Sm., Polygonum amphibium L. and Schoenoplectus lacustris (L) Pallas) in three Scottish lochs of different trophic levels were studied during 1975. Mean chlorophyll levels varied from a minimum of 1.73 mg g–1 dry weight in Balgavies Loch Juncus to 10.22 mg g–1 dry weight for Forfar Loch Iris. Carbon contents ranged from 450 to 520 mg g–1 ash-free dry weight. For ash, nitrogen and phosphorus, significant differences in mean concentrations were detected among plant species as well as within one plant species growing in different lochs. Positive correlations were apparent between the degree of eutrophication in the study areas and the amount of ash, phosphorus and nitrogen present in the plants growing in them.  相似文献

Bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis Rich., dry weight food assimilation rates ranged from 37 to 49% (average 43%). The filtration rate ranged from 185 to 256 ml h–1 g–1 and was higher in larger fish. Bighead carp filtered Chlorella vulgaris (6 ± 0.4 µ diam) inefficiently (0.1 %), but the efficiency increased to 13 % for the larger Scenedesmus sp. (12 ± 1.7 µ diam). Fish kept in cages were forced to filter-feed, whereas fish kept free in the same pond were opportunistic plankton and bottom feeders. Free fish grew faster.  相似文献

To determine the contribution of food ingestion (trophic pathway) to PCB contamination of zooplankton in the river Meuse (Belgium), we used 14C-labelled algae (Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum) to measure ingestion and assimilation rates in the rotifer species Brachionus calyciflorus. When the concentration of algae in the culture medium varied from 20 103 to 200 103 algal cells ml–1 (0.12 to 1.18 mg Cl–1), the Brachionus calyciflorus ingestion rate varied from 0.25 ± 0.12 to 1.52 ± 0.43 ng C ind–1 h–1 at 15 °C and from 0.74 ± 0.17 to 5.93 ± 0.61 ng C ind–1 h–1 at 20 °C. The assimilation efficiency (ratio of the assimilation rate to the ingestion rate) measured in a culture medium containing 200 103 algal cells ml–1 was 55.7 ± 5.8%. Since the PCB concentration measured in the phytoplankton of the river Meuse is about 3 µg PCBs g–1 D.W., the estimated PCB contamination of zooplankton ascribable to the trophic pathway ranges from 0.22 ± 0.17 to 1.31 ± 0.77 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. at 15 °C and from 0.64 ± 0.34 to 5.10 ± 2.10 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. at 20°C. The lower figure based on measurements effected at 20 °C is comparable to the actual level measured in zooplankton samples collected in the river Meuse (0.69 ± 0.20 µg PCBs g–1 D.W.). The applicability of the formula used in our estimate was checked in a 48-hour in vitro experiment in which the rotifers were fed contaminated algae. The PCB accumulation measured in the rotifers was found to coincide with the calculated PCB contamination. Additional experiments were carried out to determine the contribution of the direct pathway to PCB contamination of zooplankton living in the river Meuse (0.02 µg PCBs l–1 of water; average dissolved organic matter: 3 mg C 1–1). The PCB concentration in zooplankton resulting from direct uptake of PCBs from the water was estimated at 0.19 ± 0.05 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. These results show that in zooplankton living in polluted ecosystems, PCBs are likely to accumulate via the trophic pathway to concentrations up to 30 times higher than by direct contamination. Furthermore, our estimates of PCB contamination via the trophic pathway coincide quite well with actual concentrations measured in situ.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation rates, as estimated by the acetylene reduction technique, were determined in conifer wood litter being decayed by brown- and white-rot fungi. Average ethylene production rates were significantly higher in white-rotted wood (15.1 nmol g–1 day–1) than in brown-rotted wood (2.3 nmol g–1 day–1). This difference may be related to a higher soluble sugar content in white-versus brown-rotted wood. The nitrogen-fixing bacteriumAzospirillum was not detected in any of the decaying wood samples examined. Greater nitrogen additions from nitrogen-fixing bacteria may be a factor in the more rapid white-rot decay of hardwood litter, as compared to the slower brown-rot decay of conifer wood.  相似文献

Forest soil from an experimental Norway spruce forest with four levels of wood ash addition (0, 1, 3 and 6 tonnes ha–1) was used to inoculate pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings with indigenous ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi. Uptake of 32P and 86Rb in a root bioassay was used to estimate the demand for P and K by seedlings grown in the different soils. Utilisation of P from apatite was tested in a laboratory system where uptake by the ectomycorrhizal mycelium was separated from uptake by roots. The demand for P and K in the seedlings was similar regardless of the ash treatment. Variation in EM levels, estimated as fungal biomass (ergosterol) in roots, was large in the different soils, but not related to ash addition. Uptake of P from apatite was, on average, 23% of total seedling P and was not related to EM levels. It was concluded that the improved P uptake from apatite by EM fungi found in earlier studies is probably not a general phenomenon among EM fungi. The small effect of ash addition on EM levels and P uptake suggests that addition of granulated wood ash is a forest management treatment that will have only minor influence on ectomycorrhizal symbiosis.  相似文献

In Sweden application of granulated wood ash has been suggested as a method to supplement nutrient loss resulting from harvesting of forest residues for bioenergy production. Mycelia of two ectomycorrhizal fungi Piloderma sp. 1 and Ha-96-3, were commonly found to colonise ash granules in a wood ash fertilised spruce forest. Thirty-eight fungal isolates were selected from 10 taxa to investigate the possible role of different ectomycorrhizal fungi in nutrient mobilisation from ash. The taxa were Cenococcum geophilum Fr., Piloderma croceum Erikss. and Hjortst., Piloderma sp. 1, Thelephora terrestris (Ehrenb.) Fr., Tylospora fibrillosa Donk, and five unidentified species, all originating from a wood ash fertilised spruce forest. The isolates were tested for their ability to solubilise tricalcium phosphate (TCP) or hardened wood ash (HWA) in vitro. Ha-96-3, P. croceum and Piloderma sp. 1 were the only taxa which solubilised TCP. Abundant calcium oxalate crystals were formed in TCP and HWA plates with Piloderma sp. 1. Ha-96-3 and two isolates of P. croceum produced intermediate amounts of crystals. Ha-96-1 and T. fibrillosa produced low amounts of crystal but no crystal formation was observed by any of the other isolates. Piloderma sp. 1 from HWA plates had significantly higher concentrations of P, compared to P. croceum or Ha-96-3. Piloderma sp. 1 and P. croceum were further tested for their ability to colonise wood ash in microcosms containing intact mycorrhizal associations. After 7 months Piloderma sp. 1 colonised ash amended patches with a dense, mat like mycelium, whereas P. croceum mycelia avoided the ash patches. Possible differences between these fungi in patterns of carbon allocation were investigated by labelling seedlings with 14CO(2). Piloderma sp. 1 mycelia allocated significantly more 14C to ash patches than P. croceum. P. croceum allocated relatively more 14C to control patches than to the ash patches. The possible role of ectomycorrhizal fungi in mobilisation of nutrients from wood ash is discussed.  相似文献

Summary A study of the ammonium transport system of Zygosaccharomyces bailii was carried out using methylammonium as a non-metabolizable analogue. Benzoic acid in the growth medium decreased the capacity of the transport system from 1.46 ± 0.11 mmol.g–1.h–1 to 0.41±0.04 mmol.g–1.h–1, while the affinity for ammonium was not significatively affected. Although ammonium uptake was inhibited by benzoic acid, the ammonium transport system was still active at preservative concentrations which fully inhibited growth suggesting that inhibition of growth was not governed by the uptake of this nutrient.  相似文献

Forest structure and biomass were determined in a mangrove stand dominated by Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lam. Trees in 5 m2 sample plots were harvested at ground level and then further cut into 1 m strata for separation into living wood, dead wood, leaves, reproductive material and pneumatophores. Mean above-ground living biomass was calculated at 94.49±7.83 t dry matter ha–1, while dead wood contributed a mean mass of 7.63±0.89 t dry matter ha–1. Excavations of roots yielded a below-ground biomass of 9.67 t dry matter ha–1 which represented only 9.8% of the above-ground value. There was a mean density of 4700 living stems ha–1 with plant heights ranging from 0.57 m to 5.80 m. Mean LAI was 4.95±0.80. As a basis for estimating standing biomass, regression lines were fitted to biomass values from individual trees of B. gymnorrhiza and Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. of various sizes. A comparison of these relationships with methods used by previous workers for estimating biomass suggests that most other methods cannot be applied without modification for local stands of mangroves.  相似文献

This study calculated the compositional nutrient diagnosis (CND) norms of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), as well as identified significant nutrient interactions of this crop growing in an irrigated calcareous desert soil. Three genotypes were distributed in rows in a 2-ha field. The soil showed high heterogeneity in its chemical properties. For statistical analysis, 86 foliar composite samples from healthy plants were used. Preliminary CND norms were developed using a cumulative variance ratio function and the 2 distribution function. Means and standard deviations of row-centered log ratios VX of five nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) and a filling value R, which included all nutrients not chemically analyzed. Preliminary CND norms are: VN*=0.174±0.095, VP*=–2.172±0.234, VK*=–0.007±0.267, VCa*=–0.022±0.146, VMg*=–1.710±0.132, and VR5*=3.728±0.084. These CND norms are associated with dry bean yields higher than 1.88 t ha–1, and are associated with the following foliar concentrations: 26.2 g N kg–1, 2.5 g P kg–1, 22.9 g K kg–1, 21.6 g Ca kg–1, and 4 g Mg kg–1. Cowpea plants growing in desert calcareous soils took up lower amounts of N, P, and K than those considered as optimum in a previous report. Six interactions were strongly indicated for cowpea through principal component analyses: positive for Ca–Mg, and negative for N–Ca, N–Mg, Ca–P, Mg–P, and K–P. Allochthonous coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) input into the Njoro River was measured between January and June 1998 at two contrasting sites: open-canopy and closed-canopy sites. Bank runoff and aerial drift traps were used for collecting CPOM inputs over periods of two weeks. Collected litter was sorted into four categories: leaves, fruits, wood and plant fragments. Monthly input ranged from 77 to 228 g ash free dry weight m–1 for bank runoff input and from 64 to 129 g ash free dry weight m–2 for aerial input. The highest input of 228 g ash free dry weight m–1 was recorded in May at the closed-canopy site. Wood, fruits and plant fragments of particle size >100 m contributed a mean ± SE of 60±9% of the total inputs with the rest from leaf litter. The closed-canopy site had higher inputs (P<0.05) of bank and aerial input than the open canopy site. There was no relationship between total bank runoff input and rainfall (r s = 0.08), however, total aerial input increased with decrease in rainfall (r s = – 0.59). There were differences between inputs from different plant species (P<0.05) that ranked in the following order: Syzygium cordatum > Rhus natalensis > Pittosporum viridiflorum > Vangueria madagascariensis. Removal of riparian vegetation from the banks of the Njoro River would alter the quantity and quality of the litter and reduce CPOM inputs to the river and to a downstream lake with attendant consequences to the energy budget of biocoenoses in the two ecosystems.  相似文献

The Pantanal is a 140,000 km2 floodplain wetland stretching acrosswestern Brazil and parts of Bolivia and Paraguay. Gold mining withmercury (Hg) amalgamation has thrived since 1980 along its northern rim. We quantified Hg accumulation in sediment cores (N = 5) and food chainsin this general region of the northern Pantanal and in a reference region,200 km deeper into the wetland (Acurizal). Cores were dated with210Pb and 137Cs using direct gamma-assay. Total Hg wasanalyzed by cold-vapor atomic fluorescence using a gold-meshpre-concentration trap. Average pre-1940 Hg accumulation in cores wasnot significantly different (N = 5, p= 0.14) between both regions andcomparable with rates calculated for global reference sites. Post gold-rushHg (post-1980) deposition averaged 55 ± 11.3 g m-2yr-1 in the northern impacted region and was more than 1.5 timeshigher than the post-1980 rate in Acurizal, implying a regional Hg effectof gold mining. Post-1980 Hg accumulation in Acurizal, in turn, was 2.1times the rate reported for a global reference during that time period,suggesting an additional basin-wide effect over such reference sites. Bycombining our core data with assessments of the size of the impacted areaand the amount of Hg released to the region since 1980, we estimated thatonly 2–8% of this Hg was recovered as a sedimentary signal. Theremainder of the Hg was lost to the atmosphere, downstream areas, orstored in biota. Hg concentrations in surface sediments in the northernPantanal (45.5 ± 5.5 ng gdry -1) were significantlyhigher than those in our reference region (29.1 ± 0.7ng gdry -1). Hg levels in primary producers were alsoelevated in the northern Pantanal. Eichhornia crassipes rootscontained 2.7–3.0 times more mercury than shoots in both regions and Salvinia auriculata, suggested as a biological monitor for Hg pollution,contained almost four times more mercury in the northern Pantanal (90.7± 9.1 ng gdry -1) than in Acurizal (24.5 ± 3.3ng gdry -1). Plant grazers and scavengers, such as apple snails(Pomacea sp.) and adult water beetles (Fam. Hydrophilidae), werelow in Hg, confirming previous data showing that the channeling of mercuryfrom lower to higher trophic levels along herbivorous links was inefficientcompared to transfer along carnivorous links. Collections of 12–16individuals of four species of Characidae (Aphyocharax sp., Tetragonopterus sp., Serrasalmus spiropleura and Pygocentrisnattereri) in both regions showed elevated Hg body burdens in bothpiranhas S. spiropleura and P. nattereri from the northernPantanal (149.9 ± 84.2 and 302.2 ± 159.1ng gdry -1, respectively). Fish length for each species was notstatistically different between regions. P. nattereri length correlatedsignificantly (p<0.001) with Hg content in both regions, but the slopeof the regression in the northern Pantanal was 2.6 times the slope for theAcurizal collection, indicating an elevated rate of biomagnification in theHg-impacted region. Signals of Hg use in mining can be quantified insediment core chronologies and biological tissues, although species atdifferent trophic levels show dissimilar impacts. Mechanisms involved in Hgmagnification along food chains deserve more attention, particularly intropical regions where the threat of chronic exposure to this neurotoxinmay have the greatest implications for biodiversity.  相似文献

Dioscorea deltoidea cell suspension cultures were established in modified Murashige and Skoog medium. The diosgenin production increased from 0.10 g–1 to 3.98 g–1 dry cell weight when cells were cultivated in the light and in a growth medium limited in phosphate and sucrose. The addition of 1.3 g of autoclaved fungal mycelium of Alternaria tenuis per litre of cell culture growing in the dark induced the production of 0.04 mg diosgenin g–1 dry cell weight. In both cases, the production of diosgenin was preceded by a transient induction of isopentenyl diphosphate isomerase activity.  相似文献

Generally, young growing mammals have resting metabolic rates (RMRs) that are proportionally greater than those of adult animals. This is seen in the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus), a large (>20 kg) herbivorous marsupial common to arid and semi-arid inland Australia. Juvenile red kangaroos have RMRs 1.5–1.6 times those expected for adult marsupials of an equivalent body mass. When fed high-quality chopped lucerne hay, young-at-foot (YAF) kangaroos, which have permanently left the mother's pouch but are still sucking, and recently weaned red kangaroos had digestible energy intakes of 641±27 kJ kg–0.75 day–1 and 677±26 kJ kg–0.75 day–1, respectively, significantly higher than the 385±37 kJ kg–0.75 day–1 ingested by mature, non-lactating females. However, YAF and weaned red kangaroos had maintenance energy requirements (MERs) that were not significantly higher than those of mature, non-lactating females, the values ranging between 384 kJ kg–0.75 day–1 and 390 kJ kg–0.75 day–1 digestible energy. Importantly, the MER of mature female red kangaroos was 84% of that previously reported for similarly sized, but still growing, male red kangaroos. Growth was the main factor affecting the proportionally higher energy requirements of the juvenile red kangaroos relative to non-reproductive mature females. On a good quality diet, juvenile red kangaroos from permanent pouch exit until shortly after weaning (ca. 220–400 days) had average growth rates of 55 g body mass day–1. At this level of growth, juveniles had total daily digestible energy requirements (i.e. MER plus growth energy requirements) that were 1.7–1.8 times the MER of mature, non-reproductive females. Our data suggest that the proportionally higher RMR of juvenile red kangaroos is largely explained by the additional energy needed for growth. Rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production, telemetered body temperature (Tb) and activity level were recorded from adult and subadult water shrews (Sorex palustris) over an air temperature (Ta) range of 3–32°C. Digesta passage rate trials were conducted before metabolic testing to estimate the minimum fasting time required for water shrews to achieve a postabsorptive state. Of the 228 metabolic trials conducted on 15 water shrews, 146 (64%) were discarded because the criteria for inactivity were not met. Abdominal Tb of S. palustris was independent of Ta and averaged 38.64±0.07°C. The thermoneutral zone extended from 21.2°C to at least 32°C. Our estimate of the basal metabolic rate for resting, postabsorptive water shrews (96.88±2.93 J g–1 h–1 or 4.84±0.14 ml O2 g–1 h–1) was three times the mass-predicted value, while their minimum thermal conductance in air (0.282±0.013 ml O2 g–1 h–1) concurred with allometric predictions. The mean digesta throughput time of water shrews fed mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) or ground meat was 50–55 min. The digestibility coefficients for metabolizable energy (ME) of water shrews fed stickleback minnows (Culaea inconstans) and dragonfly nymphs (Anax spp. and Libellula spp.) were 85.4±1.3% and 82.8±1.1%, respectively. The average metabolic rate (AMR) calculated from the gas exchange of six water shrews at 19–22°C (208.0±17.0 J g–1 h–1) was nearly identical to the estimate of energy intake (202.9±12.9 J g–1 h–1) measured for these same animals during digestibility trials (20°C). Based on 24-h activity trials and our derived ME coefficients, the minimum daily energy requirement of an adult (14.4 g) water shrew at Ta = 20°C is 54.0 kJ, or the energetic equivalent of 14.7 stickleback minnows.  相似文献

Total mercury was measured in different compartments of Lake Xolotlán's (Managua) ecosystemviz., sediments, water, fish and men. Sediments from 18 localities at 5 depths inside the sediment (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 cm) contained an average concentration of 0.62 g Hg.g–1±0.46 at the surface, with extreme values of 0.16 and 1.8 g.g–1. The highest concentration was observed at 25 cm depth in front of the chlor-alkaly factory (ELPESA). This maximum is associated with the period of highest production of this factory. The highest mercury concentrations in water were also measured close to the discharge of ELPESA,viz. 787 g.Hg–1 in January and 506 g.g–1 in April. The mean mercury concentrations measured in the muscles of the most consumed fish were 0.63 g.g–1±0.22 (extreme values 0.22 and 1.45) inCichlasoma managuense, and 0.07 g.g–1±0.14 (extreme values 0.004 and 0.63) inC. citrinellum. The concentration in the liver was 0.79 g.g–1±1.29 inC. managuense and 0.62 g.g–1±0.44 inC. citrinellum. Human hairs (n=98) of fishermen and their families contained 5.03 g.g–1±6.2 (extreme values 0.02 and 38.22). The mean concentration measured in men was 6.22 g.g–1±6.34 (n=58), and in women 3.39 g.g–1±5.7 (n=40). The average mercury concentration of hairs of workers of ELPESA was 91.24 g.g–1±156.9 (extreme values 0.46 and 724.53; n=32). We conclude that total mercury levels in the various ecosystem compartments are very high and mercury contamination in the lake may be considered as dangerous for human health.  相似文献

Three reactive dyes were rapidly adsorbed by the mycelium pellets of Penicillium oxalicum. Dye removal of Reactive Blue 19 was up to 60% in 10 min and 91% in 80 min. Dye adsorption isotherms fitted Langmuir model well and the maximum adsorption capacities at 20 °C were calculated to be 160 mg g–1 for Reactive Blue 19, 122 mg g–1 for Reactive Red 241 and 137 mg g–1 for Reactive Yellow 145, respectively. The pellets exhibited a high dye adsorption capacity (80–180 mg g–1) for all of the 3 dyes over a wide pH range (pH 2–10), and the maximum adsorption was obtained at pH 2. The adsorption capacity was mildly increased by increasing salinity.  相似文献

The adsorption capacity for Ni2+ on to the surface molecular imprinting adsorbent on Penicillium chysogenum mycelium (the surface-imprinted adsorbent) was 40–45 mg g–1 (using 200 mg Ni2+ l–1), two times of the mycelium adsorbent. The surface-imprinted adsorbent had good stability at pH 28. The optimal concentration of EDTA for desorption was 0.1 to 0.5 g l–1. The surface imprinted adsorbent could be reused 15 times without losing its uptake.  相似文献
