Normal reference range intervals for hematologic and serum biochemical values in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) have seldom been reported. The few studies that have been conducted either report values on the basis of a small number of animals, report values for all age groups or both sexes combined, or were designed specifically to document the effect of a particular condition on the normal range of hematologic and serum biochemical values. On the basis of data collected from 133 chimpanzees over a 17-year period, empirically based clinical reference ranges were derived to provide a guide for basic diagnostic and clinical care of chimpanzees. For either sex within each of four age groups, there is a table that summarizes serum biochemical and a table that summarizes hematologic values. These values are compared with prior values, and their importance in the care and well being of captive chimpanzee populations is discussed.  相似文献

Iron deficiency anemia is a human health problem of global significance, particularly as it affects pregnant women and infants. While the study of nonhuman primates has resulted in valuable knowledge about iron metabolism, hematologic and biochemical reference ranges for the parameters of iron metabolism are difficult to document in healthy monkeys. At our institution, we maintain a large breeding colony of healthy cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Data compiled after sampling nonpregnant females and male members of this colony are presented as reference ranges for red cell number, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cellular volume, mean cellular hemoglobin, mean cellular hemoglobin concentration, serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, serum transferrin, and serum ferritin.  相似文献

In Australia the brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) is the subject of a national recovery plan, and several sites have been selected for reintroductions. Condition of wild populations and individual animals can be monitored using hematologic and serum biochemistry analytes, and hematologic variables have been correlated with postrelease survival in other species. Prior to such monitoring, reference values for blood variables are required, but these data have not been available for the brush-tailed rock-wallaby. During four trapping periods from November 2004 to August 2005, 116 blood samples were collected from 44 brush-tailed rock-wallabies in a wild colony in southeast Queensland. Some variables varied with sex, age, method of restraint, lactation demands, and trapping period. After partitioning, when required, reference ranges for hematology and serum biochemistry variables were established. This study provides the most comprehensive serum biochemistry reference range for any macropodid marsupial yet published.  相似文献

At the time of weaning (8 weeks), 57 gray short-tailed opossums (Monodelphis domestica) were placed in four dietary groups. One group was fed a horsemeat-based diet that had been used for 2.5 years in our colony, and three groups were fed three different commercial fox food diets. After the animals had reached sexual maturity (6 months), blood samples were collected and subjected to standard hematologic and serum chemical assays. Significant differences were observed among the dietary groups and between sexes in several values, but all animals appeared to be healthy and robust. The ranges, means, and standard deviations for the values presented here can be used as reference values for healthy young adult animals being fed these particular diets.  相似文献

Hematologic and serum biochemistry values were determined for 31 adult (21 male and 10 female) and four subadult male northern hairy-nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus krefftii) from the only existing population in Epping Forest National Park, Australia. Blood samples were obtained from free-ranging northern hairy-nosed wombats during trapping for population census and health and reproductive assessment in 1999. Hematologic and biochemical values were compared between adult males and adult females, and between adult and subadult wombats. Values were also compared with those previously published for southern hairy-nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons) and common (Vombatus ursinus) wombats. The values from this study were used to create reference intervals, and they make up the first comprehensive hematologic and biochemical study for this highly endangered species.  相似文献

Serum and hematologic biochemistry values for island foxes (Urocyon littoralis) on Santa Cruz Island (California, USA) in April (wet season) and September (dry season) 1998 were evaluated. Serum chemistry of island foxes generally varied seasonally; 10 (40%) of the 25 serum characteristics were higher in the wet season, and three (12%) of the 25 serum characteristics were higher in the dry season. No hematologic parameters varied between seasons, although some measures varied between sexes. Blood analytes also varied with age; fox pups had higher values than adults for one hematologic and four serum parameters, whereas adult foxes had higher values for five hematologic characteristics. The information on blood chemistry provides baseline data useful in the monitoring of this threatened insular endemic carnivore.  相似文献

We studied blood samples from 529 Spanish ibexes (Capra pyrenaica) from different Andalusian mountain ranges in southern Spain, primarily from Sierra Nevada. For each sample, 13 hematologic and 32 biochemical parameters were analyzed. Within this database, we selected values obtained from live, free-ranging, physically restrained, clinically normal animals to determine reference intervals for these parameters. Distribution of values within each parameter was determined and differences in values between sex and age classes also were determined. We found significant differences in eight biochemical parameters among male and female ibexes. Significant differences in values for 20 hematologic and biochemical parameters between age classes also were found.  相似文献

The rdw rat is a new strain of dwarf mutant that has decreased blood thyroxine (T4) and growth hormone (GH) concentrations and testicular enlargement during development and aging. To confirm whether this strain can be used as a new hypothyroid model, the experiments reported here were carried out, using adult rdw rats, rdw rats treated with thyroxine, and clinically normal (N) Wistar-Imamichi rats. Clinical parameters of deficient thyroid function in rdw rats were chosen for evaluation and characterization. Body weight, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, hematocrit (Hct), glucose (GLU), and systolic blood pressure were significantly lower, and serum values for aspartate transaminase (AST), total cholesterol (TC), total protein (TP), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were higher in rdw than in N rats. Serum concentrations of total T4 and free triiodothyronine (FT3) were significantly lower, and serum thyroid-stimulation hormone (TSH) concentration was markedly higher in rdw than in N rats. Serum GH concentration was significantly lower in rdw than in N rats. Results of histologic examination indicated that the thyroid gland of rdw rats was markedly atrophied, compared with that of N rats. Results of clinical examination of organs and hematologic and biochemical values in rdw rats corresponded to those of the hypothyroid state in humans. Most organ weights (heart, kidney, spleen, and adrenal gland), hematologic and biochemical values (Hb, Hct TC, TP, BUN), blood pressure, and serum hormone (TSH and GH) values underwent substantial restoration (partial or complete) toward normal in response to replacement therapy. In conclusion, the rdw rat is a useful model of congenital hypothyroidism.  相似文献

Hematologic and blood biochemical variables are of great importance in medical and veterinary practice. In addition, these analytes may have significance as potential biomarkers of aging. Previous reports on normative values of these variables in the chimpanzees are based on cross-sectional studies that did not include individuals of advanced age. To address this omission, we performed cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of hematologic and blood biochemical data collected from chimpanzees over a 9-year period. One-hundred forty-six females and 106 males of ages representing the entire life span of the species were studied. We derived normative cross-sectional values of 14 commonly measured hematologic and 20 blood biochemical variables, which should provide a useful reference for clinical blood studies in chimpanzees. In addition, we found in a cross-sectional regression analysis of our data that most analytes varied significantly between males and females, and that they varied markedly with age. Most variables had year-to-year consistency within the same individuals, as indicated by statistically significant intra-year correlation coefficients. Finally, we performed a longitudinal analysis of the analytes in chimpanzees by calculating the slopes and intercepts of the best-fitting trend line for each individual. The resulting slopes were analyzed by sex and by decade of age of subjects to determine whether trends were consistent. Consistent trends detected in the longitudinal analysis were usually restricted to the first decade of life, and thus represented maturational processes. The overall lack of within-animal trends covering all or most of the period from early adulthood through old age in this 9-year study suggests that a longer period of follow-up than used here may be required to document senescence-related changes.  相似文献

Although published normative reference standards for hematologic and clinical chemistry measures are available for adult baboons, their applicability to infants has not been addressed. We analyzed these measures in 110 infant baboons (55 females and 55 males) from a large breeding colony at the Southwest Regional Primate Research Center in San Antonio, Texas. The sample consists of olive baboons and olive/yellow baboon hybrids, 1 week to 12 months of age. We produced cross-sectional reference values and examined the effects of age, sex, and subspecies on these variables. Hematology reference ranges for infant baboons are similar to, but wider than, those for adults. Reference ranges for blood biochemistry measures are generally more dissimilar to adults, indicating that for many variables, reference ranges for adult baboons are not adequate for infants. Although sex and subspecies differences are rare, age accounts for more than 10% of the variance in many of the variables.  相似文献

Blood and cloacal swabs were collected from 100 (66 female, 34 male) wild Tundra Swans (Cygnus columbianus) molting in northwestern Alaska, USA, 25-28 July 2008, to establish hematologic and serum chemistry reference values and to isolate enteric Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli O157:H7. Plasma biochemistry and hematology values did not vary significantly by sex or age. Tundra swans had high levels of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, amylase, and alkaline phosphatase compared with some other avian species (values were up to 7 times greater), possibly indicating capture myopathy. However, concentrations were much lower (up to 8 times lower) than in other waterfowl exposed to similar or more intensive capture methods. White blood cell count and hematocrit values were similar to other waterfowl species, and enteric Salmonella spp. and E. coli O157:H7 were not present among birds sampled. Our data provide the first biochemical, hematologic, and bacteriologic reference values for wild Tundra Swans.  相似文献

Serum chemistry values and complete blood counts were determined for 36 wild dusky-footed wood rats (Neotoma fuscipes) from Sonoma and western Yolo County, California (USA) in summer 1999 and spring 2001. All wood rats had adequate body condition and were hydrated. Many hematologic and biochemical values were comparable to those for house rat (Rattus rattus). There were differences between wood rats tested immediately after capture (those from Yolo County) and after a week of habituation in the laboratory (Sonoma County). Significant differences were noted in red blood cell counts, hemoglobin, hematocrit, neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio, glucose, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase values. The neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio may have been iatrogenically modified in the wood rats tested immediately after capture by stress-induced neutrophilia and lymphopenia. Eosinophilia may have been associated with parasites such as botflies in four individuals, and hyperglycemia in three individuals could have been associated with stress. The cause of elevated enzymes in the animals tested after laboratory habituation is unclear. The hematologic and biochemical values of these apparently healthy wood rats provide valuable baseline information for use in further medical studies performed with this species.  相似文献

In the study reported here, reference intervals for hematologic and serum clinical chemistry variables in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) were developed and characterized. Data were collected longitudinally across a 10-year period for 86 subjects at the Primate Foundation of Arizona (PFA). Variables included nine standard hematologic and 25 standard serum clinical chemistry values. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test for main effects by age and sex. In addition, PFA mean and range values were compared with those published for humans and six other chimpanzee colonies. The ANOVA results suggest an age effect on hematologic (mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, neutrophils) and serum clinical chemical (creatinine, total protein, globulin, tryglycerides, direct bilirubin, iron, (gamma-glutamyltransferase, alanine transaminase, creatine kinase) values. In addition, sex had a main effect on several variables (red blood cells, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, uric acid and sodium concentrations, and aspartate transminase and creatine kinase activities); values for males were greater than those for females. Further, human and chimpanzee mean and range values often were indistinguishable from one another. However, changes in human and chimpanzee values associated with age differ and suggest that hematologic and serum clinical chemistry values may be differentially affected by physical and sexual maturation in humans and chimpanzees.  相似文献

We collected blood from 18 beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas), live-captured in Bristol Bay, Alaska, USA, in May and September 2008, to establish baseline hematologic and serum chemistry values and to determine whether there were significant differences in hematologic values by sex, season, size/age, or time during the capture period. Whole blood was collected within an average of 19 min (range=11-30 min) after the net was set for capture, and for eight animals, blood collection was repeated in a later season after between 80-100 min; all blood was processed within 12 hr. Mean hematocrit, chloride, creatinine, total protein, albumin, and alkaline phosphatase were significantly lower in May than they were in September, whereas mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, monocytes, phosphorous, magnesium, blood urea nitrogen, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltranspeptidase, and creatinine kinase were significantly higher. Mean total protein, white blood cell count, neutrophils, and lymphocytes were significantly higher early in the capture period than they were later. No significant differences in blood analyte values were noted between males and females. Using overall body length as a proxy for age, larger (older) belugas had lower white blood cell, lymphocyte, and eosinophil counts as well as lower sodium, potassium, and calcium levels but higher creatinine levels than smaller belugas. These data provide values for hematology and serum chemistry for comparisons with other wild belugas.  相似文献

Blood samples obtained from 48, eighteen-month-old pen-raised coyotes (Canis latrans) were analyzed for 32 hematologic and serum chemistry parameters. Mean, standard deviation, and range were established for each parameter. No differences attributable to sex were observed for any parameter. The reported hematologic and serum chemistry values establish non-fasting baseline values for pen-raised coyotes.  相似文献

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has proven an excellent model for study of vertebrate development and genetics. Mutagenesis studies have produced many blood mutants with defects ranging from hematopoiesis to coagulation. The overwhelming majority of zebrafish studies have focused on development and mutational effects in embryos, whereas effects in mature zebrafish have gone largely unexplored. We believe that zebrafish will prove a valuable model for study of aging and age-related diseases, and we have sought to characterize some of the basic features of mature zebrafish. Accordingly, blood was collected from adult zebrafish and was analyzed to determine reference hematologic and biochemical parameters. White blood cell differential counts indicated predominantly lymphocytes, with mean proportion of 82.95%. Total red blood cell counts averaged 3.02 x 10(6) cells/microl. Except for increases in alanine transaminase (ALT), amylase, and phosphorus values, serum biochemical analytes were within the range of reported values for mammals and other species of fish. Accurate analysis of the many zebrafish mutants generated requires determination of normal characteristics of zebrafish. We believe results such as these will help define normal adult zebrafish, which have a tremendous potential for use in the study of human disease and aging.  相似文献

In order to clarify individual differences in bone metabolism among colony-raised beagle dogs, histomorphometric values of iliac trabecular bone and values of serum biochemical constituents related to bone were examined in 10 and 17 beagle dogs raised, respectively, under our two breeding systems in which differences in factors such as exercise, ultraviolet rays, and mineral content of the diet affect bone metabolism. At the age of 14 months, all dogs were injected with tetracycline hydrochloride and calcein twice for double bone labeling in order to measure dynamic as well as static parameters by bone histomorphometry and the ilium was later biopsied. The measurement on cancellous bone areas of undecalcified iliac sections was performed with a semiautomatic image analyser. Values of total calcium, phosphorus, alkalinephosphatase activity, parathyroid hormone and calcitonin in serum were also determined. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the two groups in histomorphometric values, except for the osteoid volume (p less than 0.05) and osteoid surface/trabecular surface ratio (p less than 0.01) in females, or in serum biochemical constituents, except for alkalinephosphatase activity (p less than 0.001) in males, indicating there were virtually no individual differences in bone metabolism in normal colony raised beagle dogs.  相似文献

Background Blood reference values for bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata) are limited. The goal of this study was to determine reference ranges for hematological and serum biochemical indices in healthy, socially housed bonnet macaques for males and females over a range of ages. Methods Blood hematological and serum biochemical values were obtained from 50 healthy bonnet macaques of both sexes and aged 10–234 months. Results Age and sex differences were present in a number of measures. Globulins, total protein, and creatinine (CREAT) values were highest among older subjects, while alkaline phophatase, albumin, and phosphorus values were higher in juveniles. Sex differences were present in concentrations of red blood cells and CREAT, with higher values in males. Conclusion The blood parameter data reported here as age‐specific reference values for laboratory‐housed, healthy bonnet macaques may be used to inform clinical care and laboratory primate research.  相似文献

The parasitic mite Varroa destructor, in interaction with different viruses, is the main cause of honey bee colony mortality in most parts of the world. Here we studied how effects of individual-level parasitization are reflected by the bee colony as a whole. We measured disease progression in an apiary of 24 hives with differing degree of mite infestation, and investigated its relationship to 28 biometrical, physiological and biochemical indicators. In early summer, when the most heavily infested colonies already showed reduced growth, an elevated ratio of brood to bees, as well as a strong presence of phenoloxidase/prophenoloxidase in hive bees were found to be predictors of the time of colony collapse. One month later, the learning performance of worker bees as well as the activity of glucose oxidase measured from head extracts were significantly linked to the timing of colony collapse. Colonies at the brink of collapse were characterized by reduced weight of winter bees and a strong increase in their relative body water content. Our data confirm the importance of the immune system, known from studies of individually-infested bees, for the pathogenesis of varroosis at colony level. However, they also show that single-bee effects cannot always be extrapolated to the colony as a whole. This fact, together with the prominent role of colony-level factors like the ratio between brood and bees for disease progression, stress the importance of the superorganismal dimension of Varroa research.  相似文献
