The objective of this study was to highlight the problems that arise during the reproduction between thin-tailed rams and fat-tailed ewes. At the same time, particular emphasis laid on the influence of sheep breed, sheep age, time after ram introduction and day of the ewe estrus cycle on ram and ewe sexual behaviour. Rams were subjected to sexual performance tests by being individually exposed to 12 ewes for 3 h daily, 19 consecutive days. The 16 rams of the experiment were separated according to their age (9 and 21 months old) and breed (Chios and Karagouniki), and the 96 ewes of Chios fat-tailed breed, were divided by age (9 and 21 months old). The main characteristics of courtship behaviour, like sniffing, nudging, flehmen response and following were recorded and studied in detail. Mature Chios rams, which were the only one with previous experience of Chios ewes, exhibited higher rates of sexual interest per ewe than the other rams (P < 0.05). On the other hand, rams sniffed and nudged more young than mature ewes (P < 0.05), probably due to the fact that young ewes did not express intense symptoms of estrus. Young rams exhibited substandard sexual interest towards mature ewes, when they first came in contact with them (P < 0.05). In general, Karagouniki thin-tailed rams exhibited reduced rates of mating behaviour when they courted with Chios fat-tailed ewes in comparison with Chios rams (P < 0.05). Moreover, as the time after ram introduction passed, the frequency and duration of sexual behaviour components decreased (P < 0.001). Finally, the effect of the day of the experiment was only significant in the case of sniffing, which increased during the first 2 days and then declined and stabilized (P < 0.01). As it was demonstrated, ram age and ram breed played a fundamental role in the exhibition of sexual interest elements.  相似文献

A single trait's fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is expected to be a poor measure of developmental instability. Hence, studies that examine associations between FA and outcomes expected to covary with developmental instability often have little power in detecting meaningful relationships. One way of increasing the power of detecting relationships between developmental instability and outcomes is through the use of multiple traits' FA. The way multiple traits have typically been used is in trait aggregates. Here, we illustrate another way of examining relationships with developmental instability using multiple traits' FA: through structural equation modelling. Covariances between measures of FA and an outcome variable are interpreted within the context of an explicit model of associations between variables, which is tested for fit and the parameters specified within the model are estimated. We used nine traits' FA as markers of a latent variable of men's developmental instability, which was associated with the number of sexual partners. The results indicate a sizeable correlation between developmental instability and men's sexual history, despite small correlations between individual traits' FA and sexual history.  相似文献

Age-dependent sexual selection in bighorn rams.   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Although mating systems and sexual selection have been intensively studied in ungulate model systems, very few studies have combined genetic paternity analysis with individual phenotypic data over several breeding seasons. We used microsatellite paternity analysis to determine the parentage of 83 bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) born between 1995 and 2000 at Ram Mountain, Alberta, Canada. We could assign the paternity of 64 lambs at a high level of statistical confidence (95%). Within each season, the most successful ram sired an average of 35.5% of the lambs with assigned paternity, and a single ram sired 26.1% of all lambs over the six mating seasons. Although a few large-horned, mature (age 8+ years) rams had very high reproductive success, younger rams sired ca. 50% of the lambs. Mixed-effects models indicated that mating success increases as a nonlinear function of age, with horn length increasingly positive in correlation with mating success in older rams. These results indicate that young or small rams possibly achieve mating success through alternative mating tactics that are less dependent on body and weapon size, such as coursing and blocking. Sexual selection is therefore likely to have age-dependent effects on traits such as agility, body and horn size.  相似文献

The sexual performance of bulls and male goats is improved if they are allowed to view the hetero-sexual behavior of other males as a prelude to mating. The purpose of the following study was to determine whether sexual stimulation enhances the sexual performance of rams. In Experiment 1, 11 sexually experienced ram lambs ( 9 months of age) and 18 sexually experienced yearling and 2-year-old rams were individually exposed to 4 unrestrained, hormone-induced estrous ewes for 60 min after viewing the courtship and mounting behaviors of a male conspecific for 20 min (two tests) and in the absence of stimulator animals (two tests). In contrast to the results with bulls and bucks, the rams were hardly influenced by the sexual stimulation treatment. Latencies for first mount and first ejaculation were shorter for sexually stimulated ram lambs; otherwise, treatment differences were negligible.

A similar follow-up experiment was administered to 12 mature rams using restrained females in the sexual performance tests. Again, treatment differences were minor.

It was concluded that sexual stimulation does not functionally enhance the sexual performance of rams. Species differences in response to sexual stimulation are discussed in terms of female sexual behaviors that may result in a selective (competitive) advantage to males that are stimulated to locate and mate with females early in the estrous period.  相似文献

In this paper we define sexual selection on males as the variance in numbers of mates per male and show how the intensity of this selection is affected by male sexual behaviour, female choice, sex ratio, and modes of sperm precedence. This definition coincides with Darwin's conception of sexual selection but differs from some post-Darwinian views. For systems of single-male paternity, we show that the intensity of total selection on male reproductive success equals the intensity of natural selection on female fertility, times the sex ratio, plus the intensity of sexual selection on males. The absolute intensity of sexual selection is unaffected by the system of sperm precedence. The application of the results to field studies is discussed.  相似文献

Annual production rates of reproductive organs inFagus crenata forests in the lower area of the species' range were studied using 10 litter traps in 1980–1986. The production rates of dispersed pollen were estimated by multiplying the number of fallen male inflorescences per ha per year by the mean amount of pollen per inflorescence before anthesis. Large annual fluctuations in the production rates of male and female inflorescences were recognized, whereas their annual trends were synchronized with each other. Pollen production rates were within the range 1.0–6900 (mean: 1630)×109ha−1 yr−1, the maximum/minimum ratio attaining 7000.F. crenata was the lowest producer of pollen among seven tree species studied: the number of pollen grains equivalent to a single ovule was in the range 6.0–14×104. Furthermore, the mean dry weight of a single pollen grain (3.77×10−5mg) was higher than for wind-pollinated species. Three factors seemed to cause the low seed fertility ofF. crenata. The dry-matter production rate in the best seed year reached 3252 kg ha−1 yr−1, of which pollen accounted for 259 kg ha−1 yr−1. Unproductive years with less than 10% of the maximum production occurred four times in a 7-yr period. In such years there were fewer male and female inflorescences, and more fruit dropped as a result of insect damage. Lower nut dissemination would play an important role in suppressing any increase in nut predators, and fewer flowers would be produced to avoid wastage of photosynthates in a cool-temperate climate.  相似文献

The question of what causes a male animal to seek out and choose a female as opposed to another male mating partner is unresolved and remains an issue of considerable debate. The most developed biologic theory is the perinatal organizational hypothesis, which states that perinatal hormone exposure mediates sexual differentiation of the brain. Numerous animal experiments have assessed the contribution of perinatal testosterone and/or estradiol exposure to the development of a male-typical mate preference, but almost all have used hormonally manipulated animals. In contrast, variations in sexual partner preferences occur spontaneously in domestic rams, with as many as 8% of the population exhibiting a preference for same-sex mating partners (male-oriented rams). Thus, the domestic ram is an excellent experimental model to study possible links between fetal neuroendocrine programming of neural mechanisms and adult sexual partner preferences. In this review, we present an overview of sexual differentiation in relation to sexual partner preferences. We then summarize results that test the relevance of the organizational hypothesis to expression of same-sex sexual partner preferences in rams. Finally, we demonstrate that the sexual differentiation of brain and behavior in sheep does not depend critically on aromatization of testosterone to estradiol.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether advancing the seasonal changes associated with rams by treatment with exogenous melatonin and allowing the rams previous sexual experience would increase the proportion of anoestrous ewes ovulating in early July. North Country Mule ewes (n = 225) were grouped by live body weight and body condition score and allocated randomly to the following treatments: (i) isolated from rams (control; n = 25); (ii) introduced to rams (treatment 2); (iii) introduced to rams that had mated with ewes during the previous 2 days (treatment 3); (iv) introduced to rams implanted with melatonin (treatment 4); and (v) introduced to rams that were implanted with melatonin and had mated with ewes during the previous 2 days (treatment 5). Treatments 2-5 were replicated (2 x 25 ewes) and two rams were introduced to each replicate group. Introductions began on 4 July and were completed by 11 July. The rams were withdrawn from the ewes after 8 days. Melatonin was administered as a subcutaneous implant (Regulin((R))) on 22 May and again on 20 June. Blood samples were taken from all rams to determine plasma melatonin and testosterone concentrations (19 samples in 6 h). The behaviour of the sheep was videotaped continuously during the first 3 h after the ram was introduced. Ovulation was detected by an increase in plasma progesterone concentrations from < 0.5 ng ml(-1) to > 0.5 ng ml(-1). Mean +/- SE plasma melatonin concentrations were 649.7 +/- 281.4 and 18.3 +/- 2.4 pg ml(-1) in rams with and without melatonin implants, respectively (P < 0.001). Melatonin implants also increased plasma testosterone concentrations from 4.30 +/- 1.88 to 10.10 +/- 1.10 ng ml(-1) (P < 0.01), the libido of the rams and the proportion of ewes that ovulated in response to the rams (43 and 56% (treatments 4 and 5) versus 24% (treatments 2 and 3)). In conclusion, implanting rams with melatonin before introducing them to seasonally anoestrous ewes increases the proportion of ewes that ovulate in response to introduction of a ram, but previous sexual experience of rams appears to have little or no effect.  相似文献

There is an increasing amount of evidence, from several mammalian species, that plasma testosterone levels increase acutely when the male is exposed to sexual stimuli. Work reported here investigates whether such responses occur in male mice, and whether their incidence is related to measures of sexual behaviour. Close proximity of oestrous female mice was found to result in increased plasma testosterone levels in some strains within 15 min. Immediately after a sexual behaviour test, plasma testosterone levels were higher in males showing sexual responses. There were correlations between testosterone levels and mount latency, but none with ejaculation latency. Testosterone levels were greatest at the initiation of mounting responses, and declined during copulation, although not significantly.  相似文献

Abstract The visual acuity of two species of tsetse flies, Glossina morsitans morsitans Westw. and Glossina pallidipes Aust., was investigated. Male G. morsitans eyes have an acute zone in the forward region, with large hexagonal lenses (mean minimum diameter, D=33, SE±0.7 μm), relatively small interommatidial angle (Δ(φ=1.08o) and angular receptive field of individual ommatidia (Δp) of not less than 1.14o. A narrow band of square lenses, with intermediate diameter and Δφ, merges with smaller hexagonal lenses in the periphery (24±0.7 μm), with relatively large interommatidial angle (Δφ=3.7o) and small angular receptive field (Δp = c. 1.6o). G.pallidipes eyes are similar, except that the lenses in the acute zone are larger than those of G.morsitans , in proportion to their larger body size. Female eyes are not significantly different from male eyes, except that they have a narrower region of binocular overlap (maximum for males = 24o, for females = 18o). The eye parameter (p=DΔφ) in the acute zone of male G.morsitans = 0.62, and in the peripheral zone = 1.56. These relatively high values are consistent with fast flight, visual detection of drift due to low wind speeds, mating chases and discrimination of cryptic host animals at high light intensities. The extended region of binocular overlap in males may serve as an early warning system of the approach of potential females. From our estimates, tsetse flies ought to be able to detect small objects against the sky c. 30 min before sunrise and after sunset, and to use their peripheral vision perhaps 15 min earlier and later than this.  相似文献

The introduction of rams to previously isolated anestrous ewes ensures induction of ovulation and estrus in part of the flock, and allows for the potential to conceive. However, there is little known about the desirable characteristics of the rams used to induce these behavioral and physiological responses. Adult rams may be more effective than young rams in induction of these responses. The primary aim of the present study was to compare the response in ewes stimulated by adult or yearling rams. During the non-breeding season, two groups of 121 ewes were stimulated with adult (AR) or yearling (YR) rams. When adult rams were used, significantly more ewes had ovulations (78.5 compared with 61.1%) and came into estrus (47.9 compared with 35.5%). There were more corpora lutea per ewe exposed to rams (0.95+/-0.59 compared with 0.65+/-0.51) and per ewe that had ovulations (1.18+/-0.41 compared with 1.06+/-0.25) and a greater conception rate (58.6 compared with 20.9%) as a result. Subsequently, to determine what signals led to the greater response to adult rams, the courtship behavior of adult and yearling rams toward anestrous ewes was compared in 46 pen tests. There were no significant differences in the frequency of any of the recorded courtship behaviors (anogenital sniffing: 21.9+/-3.4 versus 25.7+/-3.2; lateral approaches: 7.1+/-1.5 compared with 9.9+/-2.9; flehmen: 2.1+/-0.4 compared with 2.2+/-0.4; mount attempts: 0.1+/-0.1 compared with 0.1+/-0.1, for AR and YR, respectively), latency to the onset of courtship behavior (13.1+/-7.0 compared with 17.3+/-6.2s) or the time engaged in courtship behavior (173.1+/-24.6 compared with 199.0+/-26.5s). The difference in the signals produced by adult and yearling rams skin glands was assessed by stimulating ewes with masks containing wool from adult (n=45) or yearling (n=48) rams. More ewes had ovulations (24/45 compared with 11/48) and came into estrus (21/45 compared with 10/48) when wool from adult rams was used. As in Experiment 1, pregnancy and conception rates were greater when adult rams were used, another trial was designed to determine if there were differences in mating and mounting frequency between adult and yearling rams. Seven adult and six yearling rams were subjected to three pen tests each with three estrual ewes. Adult rams mounted more (21.7+/-4.5 compared with 9.8+/-0.7) and tended to ejaculate more frequently (2.9+/-0.5 compared with 1.8+/-0.4) than yearling rams. It is concluded that adult rams induce a greater reproductive response in anestrous ewes than yearling rams, inducing a greater ovulation percentage and estrous response in ewes, resulting in greater ovulation numbers, pregnancy and conception rates. This greater stimulation is, in part, explained by differences in the signals provided in the wool (presumably odors) produced by adult rams. The lesser percentage of pregnancies obtained when yearling rams are used may be explained by differences in mounting behaviors and ejaculation frequency.  相似文献

Summary Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are known to have short adult life-spans. Adults are unable to feed, and they utilize reserves stored during their aquatic larval stage. Energy reserves (fat, glycogen, and free sugars) of mature larvae, subimagoes and imagoes of both sexes of Siphlonurus aestivalis Eaton were compared. All the stages of both sexes had low glycogen and free sugar contents, and the only significant change occurred during the transformation of the mature larva to subimago when almost all the reserves of free sugars were used up. Glycogen and free sugars may serve as energy sources permitting individuals to swim and fly out of the water during emergence. Fat made up most of the energy reserves of mature larvae and was the main source of energy used during the final development of both sexes. Young adult males had high fat reserves which they used as a source of energy for their swarming flights. In contrast, females did not seem to use a significant amount of fat for flight. This difference is probably related to the different mating strategies of the sexes in this species. Males perform long flights waiting for females, whereas females perform only brief flights to mate and reproduce.  相似文献

‘Dominant’ rams viewed by an audience of two submissive rams showed no alteration in mating behaviour in comparison with their performance when tested alone. Submissive rams, however, mounted and ejaculated less when viewed by two dominant rams than when tested alone. Theoretical and applied implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Parasite resistance may act via a number of different mechanisms that regulate or control the survival and the reproductive rate of parasites. Observations and experiments were used to test for effects of host resistance on parasite survival and rate of reproduction. Natural levels of infestation of barn swallow Hirundo rustica nests by the tropical fowl mite Ornithonyssus bursa were positively related to brood size, inversely related to the length of the outermost tail feathers of male nest owners (a secondary sexual character) and affected by time of reproduction by the host. A mite inoculation experiment, in which 50 adult mites were introduced into nests during the laying period of the host, was used to test for differential survival and reproduction of mites as a function of host resistance. The relationship between survival and reproduction of parasites, male tail length and host resistance was investigated. There was a negative relationship between mite numbers per nest after fledging of nestlings and male tail length. This relationship was mainly caused by a reduction in the number of mites in the first and second nymph stage with increasing tail length of male hosts, implying a reduction in rate of reproduction of mites. The proportion of mites that had recently fed was inversely related to tail length of male hosts. The proportion of nymph stages was positively related to the proportion of mites that had recently had a blood meal. Parasite resistance of barn swallows to the tropical fowl mite thus appeared to act through increased mortality rate of adult and nymph stages of mites, and through reduced reproductive rates of mites on resistant hosts. This is the first study demonstating a direct relationship between fitness components of a parasite and the expression of a secondary sexual character of a host. Sexual cell fusion occurs between NC4 and HM1, the heterothallic strains in Dictyostelium discoideum. Cells of these strains are fusion incompetent when cultured on agar plates in the light and become fusion competent upon cultivation in a liquid medium in darkness. Two cell-surface components, gp70 and gp138, have been identified and characterized as being relevant to sexual cell fusion. Both are glycoproteins, and the former is detected only in fusion-competent HM1 cells, while the latter is detected both in fusion-competent HM1 and fusion-competent NC4 cells. We therefore suspect gp 70 to be responsible for cell recognition and gp138, for membrane fusion. Therefore, NC4 cells are expected to possess specific surface molecule(s) that can be recognized by HM1 cells. In the present study, we raised monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against membrane fractions of NC4 cells and selected fusion-inhibiting mAbs to identify novel molecules related to sexual cell fusion in D. discoideum. Out of the five mAbs we obtained three, DE1, GG6, and HH9, were characterized. DE1 recognized antigens that specifically existed in fusion-competent NC4 cells but not in fusion-incompetent NC4 or HM1 cells. GG6 recognized cell-surface proteins with approximate molecular weights of 125 and 32 kDa in both fusion-competent NC4 and fusion-competent HM1 cells. In addition GG6 also recognised other proteins commonly present in fusion-incompetent cells. The 125 kDa protein appeared to be the same as gp138. The epitope recognized by HH9 was sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-sensitive.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
