The uptake of phosphate by benthic communities, dominated by living algae, previously exposed to different levels of external nutrient loading, exhibited first-order kinetics with respect to the intracellular P-deficit. This deficit is the difference between the maximum and the actual intracellular P-concentration.The maximum storage capacity of P per unit of dry weight was positively correlated to the level of external nutrient loading, whereas the phosphate uptake rate constant was negatively correlated. The observed internal P concentrations in the benthic layer of test ditches over a period of two and a half years, indicated a slight decrease towards a minimum value in a ditch with a low external P-input. In a medium loaded ditch the internal P-concentration did not change significantly. In a high loaded ditch increasing internal P-concentrations over time were observed, towards P-saturation of the benthic community. 相似文献

This paper is the second in a pair investigating potential mechanisms for ecological regime change in salinising wetlands.
The first paper in this series focused on the responses of the salt-tolerant submerged macrophyte community to salinity. In
this second paper, we investigated some of the environmental conditions required for initiation and dominance of benthic microbial
communities using a combination of experimental and observational data. Two experiments were carried out. One investigated
the importance of prior establishment of benthic microbial communities on their ability to maintain prevalence over macrophyte
colonisation (‘persistence’ experiment), while the other investigated hydrology and its effect on sediment perturbation, potential
nutrient release and subsequent benthic microbial community establishment (‘flooding’ experiment). The ‘persistence’ experiment
measured the biomass of benthic microbial communities and emergence of macrophytes from sediments kept either wet or dry for
4 weeks then flooded at a range of salinities. Benthic microbial biomass was similar across all of the salinities tested (15,
45 and 70 ppt), with a slight increase at higher salinities, suggesting that none of these limited benthic microbial community
development. Pre-wetting of sediments usually increased benthic microbial community biomass and reduced macrophyte germination,
but the latter was attributed to the presence of anoxic sediments rather than the increased benthic microbial community biomass.
Germinating macrophytes emerged through benthic microbial communities or dense heterotrophic bacterial blooms, demonstrating
that they could become dominant even when another community was already established. Field data supported these results, suggesting
that the development of benthic microbial communities is not limited by salinity alone, but includes other factors, such as
the water regime. In the ‘flooding’ experiment, the largest differences in nutrient concentrations ultimately lay between
the pre-wet and pre-dry treatments (due to the greater release of nutrients and development of anoxia in the latter) rather
than those subjected to fast versus slow flooding. In response to this, highest benthic microbial community biomass was in
treatments with pre-wet sediment, corresponding with lower phytoplankton biomass. 相似文献

1. The composition and spatiotemporal dynamics of biological communities are influenced by biotic processes, such as predation and competition, but also by physical disturbances, such as floods in running waters. However, the interplay of disturbance with predation is still poorly understood, especially in frequently disturbed streams. Further, different predator species can affect prey communities in different ways depending on their feeding mode and efficiency. 2. We investigated the individual and combined effects of flood‐induced bed disturbance and fish predation on the benthos for 4 weeks in 18 streamside channels fed by a flood‐prone New Zealand river. Bed movements caused by floods were simulated by tumbling the substratum in half the channels. Six channels each were stocked with introduced brown trout ( Salmo trutta) or native upland bully ( Gobiomorphus breviceps) or had fish excluded. We studied algal biomass and both invertebrate density and daytime activity on surface stones on several dates after the disturbance, invertebrate community composition in the substrata of the entire channels on day 28 and leaf decomposition rates over the 28‐day period. 3. Disturbance affected algal biomass and density, richness and activity of surface stone invertebrates, and overall density and richness of channel invertebrates. Presence or absence of fish, by contrast, did not influence overall invertebrate standing stocks when subsurface substrata were included but did affect invertebrate densities on surface stones in 45% of all analysed cases and invertebrate activity on surface stones in all cases. Leaf decomposition rates were not influenced at all by the experimental manipulations. 4. Native upland bullies featured more often than exotic brown trout in causing invertebrate density changes and equally often in causing changes to grazer behaviour. Overall, our results imply that fish predation can have strong effects on the benthic invertebrate community in frequently disturbed streams, especially via behavioural changes. 相似文献

The effects of harvesting of callianassid shrimp ( Trypaea australiensis) on the abundance and composition of macrobenthic assemblages in unvegetated sediments of a subtropical coastal embayment in Queensland, Australia were examined using a combination of sampling and manipulative experiments. First, the abundance and composition of the benthic infauna in an area regularly used for the collection of shrimp for bait by recreational anglers was compared with multiple reference areas. Second, a BACI design, with multiple reference areas, was used to examine the short-term effects of harvesting on the benthic assemblages from an intensive commercialised fishing competition. Third, a large-scale, controlled manipulative experiment, where shrimp were harvested from 10,000 m 2 plots at intensities commensurate with those from recreational and commercial operators, was done to determine the impacts on different components of the infaunal assemblage. Only a few benthic taxa showed significant declines in abundance in response to the removal of ghost shrimp from the unvegetated sediments. There was evidence, however, of more subtle effects with changes in the degree of spatial variation (patchiness) of several taxa as a result of harvesting. Groups such as capitellid polychaetes, gammarid amphipods and some bivalves were significantly more patchy in their distribution in areas subjected to harvesting than reference areas, at a scale of tens of metres. This scale corresponds to the patterns of movement and activity of recreational harvesters working in these areas. In contrast, patchiness in the abundance of ghost shrimp decreased significantly under harvesting at scales of hundreds of metres, in response to harvesters focussing their efforts on areas with greater numbers of burrow entrances, leading to a more even distribution of the animals. Controlled experimental harvesting caused declines in the abundance of soldier crabs (Mictyris longicarpus), polychaetes and amphipods and an increase in the spatial patchiness of polychaetes. Populations of ghost shrimp were, however, resilient to harvesting over extended periods of time. In conclusion, harvesting of ghost shrimp for bait by recreational and commercial fishers causes significant but localised impacts on a limited range of benthic fauna in unvegetated sediments, including changes in the degree of spatial patchiness in their distribution. 相似文献

Synopsis Gizzard shad, Dorosoma cepedianum, in Acton Lake, Ohio, ingested foods of varying nutritional quality during the 1981–1983 growing seasons. Adult (ages 2–4) fish fed on a mixed diet (ORG>30%; C:N<7:1) of zooplankton and organic detritus in early summer, and on detrital materials (ORG<16%; C:N>11:1) during the remainder of the growing season. Age 0 (<35 mm standard length) fish ingested only detrital materials. The nutritional quality (ORG = 10 – 20%; C:N<11:1) of these foods displayed little seasonal variation, but was higher than that of organic detritus taken by adult fish in late summer and autumn. Growth and condition of gizzard shad were poor when the diet consisted of detrital materials; however, age 4 fish (1983) grew rapidly and condition improved when zooplankton were consumed. These results suggest that ingestion of poor-quality detritus can reduce the growth and condition of gizzard shad in Acton Lake, whereas the seasonal inclusion of high-quality zooplankton in the diet can result in rapid growth and improved condition. 相似文献

Synopsis We sampled larval, juvenile and adult fishes from littoral-zone areas of a large reservoir (Lake Texoma, Oklahoma-Texas) (1) to characterize environmental factors that influenced fish community structure, (2) to examine how consistent fish–environment relationships were through ontogeny (i.e., larval vs. juvenile and adult), and (3) to measure the concordance of larval communities sampled during spring to juvenile and adult communities sampled at the same sites later in the year. Larval, juvenile and adult fish communities were dominated by Atherinidae (mainly inland silverside, Menidia beryllina) and Moronidae (mainly juvenile striped bass, Morone saxatilis) and were consistently structured along a gradient of site exposure to prevailing winds and waves. Larval, juvenile and adult communities along this gradient varied from atherinids and moronids at highly exposed sites to mostly centrarchids (primarily Lepomis and Micropterus spp.) at protected sites. Secondarily, zooplankton densities, water clarity, and land-use characteristics were related to fish community structure. Rank correlation analyses and Mantel tests indicated that the spatial consistency and predictability of fish communities was high as larval fishes sampled during spring were concordant with juvenile and adult fishes sampled at the same sites during summer and fall in terms of abundance, richness, and community structure. We propose that the high predictability and spatial consistency of littoral-zone fishes in Lake Texoma was a function of relatively simple communities (dominated by 1–2 species) that were structured by factors, such as site exposure to winds and waves, that varied little through time. 相似文献

A survey was undertaken in 1985 to assess spatial and temporal trends in the benthic community structure in relation to sediment contamination and wastewater sources at 70 stations between Whitefish Bay and lower Lake George in the St. Marys River. Cluster analysis identified seven benthic communities. Three were identified as pollution impacted, based on a preponderance of tubificids and nematodes, usually at high densities (up to 259 000 m -2), but sometimes at low densities (< 100 m -2) at individual stations. Impacted communities occurred downstream of industrial and municipal sources and in depositional areas, and were confined mainly to Canadian waters. Unimpacted communities had greater numbers of taxa, and occurred upstream of point sources, along the U.S. shoreline, and in most areas of downstream lakes. Impacted and unimpacted communities were separated along particle size and contaminant gradients in river sediments. Despite recent reductions in pollutant loadings and improvements in sediment quality, no major changes were apparent in the status of the benthic community from earlier surveys. 相似文献

Efficiency of hand sorting versus centrifugally floating benthic samples of high detritus composition was compared. Centrifugal flotation removed a large proportion (up to 90%) of the detritus, significantly increased recovery of several taxa (e.g. copepods, mites and chironomids), and decreased overall sorting time. Centrifugal flotation was effective for both live and preserved samples and was 3 to 10 times more efficient than hand sorting. 相似文献

Production of larvae by threadfin shad, Dorosoma petenense, and gizzard shad, D. cepedianum, varied over two orders of magnitude and was regulated by adult threadfin shad abundance over five years in Normandy Reservoir, Tennessee. Significantly more larvae of both species were produced in years following winterkills of threadfin shad (repeated-measures ANOVA, df=4, 75; F > 21.44, p=0.0001). Peak geometric mean catch of threadfin shad larvae in neuston samples was inversely related to biomass (kg ha –1; r = – 0.91; p=0.031) and density (no. ha –1; r=– 0.89; p = 0.043) of adult (> 70 mm total length) threadfin shad in mid-summer cove samples. Peak geometric mean catch of gizzard shad larvae was also inversely related to adult threadfin shad biomass (r = – 0.93; p=0.022) and density (r=– 0.88; p=0.046) in cove samples. Winterkills of threadfin shad were size selective, killing all fish under 60 mm total length but allowing some unknown percentage of larger fish to survive. When threadfin shad stocks were reduced by winterkills, surviving threadfin shad and gizzard shad may have taken advantage of less competition for food resources in early spring and increased condition enough to spawn successfully. 相似文献

A potential alternative to land application of livestock manures for cropproduction is the production of algae to recover the nitrogen andphosphorus present in the manure. Compared to terrestrial plants, filamentous algae have exceedingly high growth and nutrient uptake rates. Moreover, they are capable of year-round growth in temperate climates, can be harvested on adapted farm-scale equipment, and yield a biomassthat should be valuable as an animal feed supplement. The objective of thisresearch was to evaluate algal turf scrubber (ATS) technology to removenitrogen, phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand from raw andanaerobically digested dairy manure. Laboratory-scale ATS units wereoperated by continuously recycling wastewater and adding manure effluentsdaily. ATS units were seeded with algal consortia from a nearby streamand grown using dairy manures from two different dairy farms. Algalbiomass was harvested weekly and dried prior to analysis for total Kjeldahlnitrogen, total phosphorus, and inorganic constituents. Wastewater sampleswere analyzed for total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate, orthophosphate, conductivity and chemical oxygen demand. Using atypical manure input containing 0.6–0.96 g total nitrogen day -1,the dried algal yield was approximately 5 g m -2 day -1. Thedried algae contained approximately 1.5–2% phosphorus and 5–7%nitrogen. Algal nitrogen and phosphorus accounted for 42–100% ofinput ammonium-nitrogen (33–42% of total nitrogen) and 58–100%of input total phosphorus, respectively. 相似文献

Gizzard shad are primarily detritivorous in Acton Lake, a 253-ha impoundment in southwestern Ohio, U.S.A. To determine the magnitude of sediment utilization by the gizzard shad population in Acton Lake. I used data on population density and age structure, daily ration, and feeding selectivity in estimating the mass of sediments processed by shad daily from April through November. At densities of 4595–10 645 fish ha −1(wet weight biomass = 90–121 kgha 1), gizzard shad could process 3.8–23.0 kg of dry sediments ha −1 day 1. On average throughout the growing season, gizzard shad could process a dry mass of sediments each day equivalent to 13% of shad wet weight biomass. Because of the high rate of sedimentation (> 700 kg dry sediment ha −1 day −1) in Acton Lake, gizzard shad can process < 4% of the freshly deposited sediments each day, and therefore are likely to have little effect on benthic community dynamics in the system. 相似文献

Larger benthic Foraminifera (LBF) are ecologically important coral reef protists that harbour a large diversity of symbionts from at least four algal phyla. In this study the photosynthetic plasticity of different endosymbiontic algae found within LBF was investigated using pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry. Maximum quantum efficiencies of photosystem II (F v/F m) obtained from foraminiferal specimens directly after field collection indicated several pronounced differences between species containing endosymbionts from different algal phyla and, to a lesser extent, also varied between species that contain the same phyla of endosymbiontic algae. Foraminiferal species retaining functional chloroplasts and rhodophyte-bearing species had distinctly lower F v/F m, than LBF with dinoflagellates, diatoms or chlorophytes. A laboratory experiment was conducted over 48 h exposing species occurring in high- (photophilic), medium- and low-light (sciaphilic) environments to three manipulated light levels. Photophysiological responses were monitored by measuring F v/F m at regular intervals and rapid light curves (RLCs) at the end of the experiment. This experiment demonstrated oscillation of maximum quantum efficiencies according to the light-dark cycle. Changes in the shape of the RLCs (e.g., higher α and lower E k under low light conditions) indicated that photosynthetic plasticity allows LBF to acclimatise rapidly (< 48 h) to different light conditions. 相似文献

A canonical correlation analysis was performed in order to explain the distribution and abundance of the profundal macrozoobenthos in 71 Spanish reservoirs. Two sets of variables were considered: one set consisted of subgroups of benthic organisms based on their feeding strategy, and the other consisted of environmental variables related to the trophic state of the reservoir. The results showed that densities of phytophagous chironomids decreased with water depth and increased with oxygen content in the bottom waters, while Tanypodinae densities increased with rising densities of phytophagous chironomids and/or oligochaetes, revealing their strong dependence on the abundance of available prey. The abundance of oligochaetes and phytophagous chironomids showed a disjunct distribution with season and depth, suggesting the importance of food quality and sediment texture.Oxygen availability and water depth acted as governing factors for the zoobenthos. Chlorophyll- a was of secondary importance and correlated inversely with the abundance of benthic fauna, especially in summer. Autogenic production coupled with inputs of allochthonous coarse particulate organic matter and a long stratification period lead to long lasting anoxia that reduces the benthic fauna in Spanish reservoirs.Only up to 18% of the variability in the biological data could be associated with the environmental factors considered. Thus, factors other than the trophic state are much more important in reservoirs. Fluctuations of the water level and inputs of organic and inorganic materials coming from the basin are greater than in lakes and act as stressing factors for the benthic fauna. 相似文献

The development of marine benthic communities in the Early Palaeozoic occurred mainly in the shallow water epicontinental
seas. It included those stages of the Cambrian and Ordovician evolutionary radiations that were dominated by a high rate of
morphogenesis, when new food and territory resources were not limited. This provided many opportunities for coadaptation of
emerging organisms. At the time of the Cambrian radiation, the body plans of all animals were formed, while in the Ordovician,
the maximum rank of emerging taxa did not exceed the level of class. The beginning of each radiation was explosive. Vendian
benthic communities developed in cold seas and in the shallowest areas of warm seas, where organic matter from the surface
layers was available at the bottom because of the absence of a thermocline. The Cambrian radiation began with the appearance
of pelagic suspension feeders, because of which much of the primary production could penetrate the thermocline and settle
at the bottom. This allowed the occupation of warmer seas and greater depths. At the same time, the productivity of the pelagic
region sharply increased because of the emergence of positive feedback between the producers and consumers in the water, leading
to increased water transparency and elongation of trophic chains. Arthropods, the first suspension feeders, were the launch
group of the Cambrian radiation. Cambrian benthic suspension feeders could seize only the smallest particles, mostly bacteria,
and dissolved organic matter. This food resource was contained in the thin bottom water layer. Therefore, the food grasping
structures of all the Cambrian suspension feeders were near the bottom, without forming tiers. The Ordovician evolutionary
radiation began with the launch of the Pelmatozoan echinoderms, which were the first benthic suspension feeders to begin feeding
on plankton. The exploitation of this resource led to the creation of a 1-m tier above the bottom and an increase in their
calcite productivity. Positive feedback emerged between the grounds and the community of its inhabitants and considerably
changed the composition and diversity of grounds, which sharply increased the diversity of benthos. The appearance of positive
feedback between different components of ecosystems resulted in explosive evolution in both the Cambrian and Ordovician. 相似文献

1. Recent research has shown that high‐flow events in streams leave a small‐scale mosaic of bed patches that have experienced scouring, sediment deposition (fill), or remained stable. Few studies have investigated if this ‘local disturbance history’ contributes to the patchy distribution of benthic organisms in streams and rivers. 2. In the present research, we demonstrate that local disturbance history in a mid‐sized river can have both short‐ and long‐term effects on epilithic algae. Chains buried vertically in the substratum of the river bed (236 in a 800‐m reach) indicated that two floods (return periods ≤1 year) caused a mosaic of bed patches with different disturbance histories. Once after the first and twice after the second flood, we sampled epilithic algae (mainly diatoms) in replicate patches that had been scoured, filled, or remained stable during the respective event. Algal biomass and cell density per substratum area were determined. 3. Three months after the first flood, algal biomass, total diatom density, diatom taxon richness, and densities of six of nine most common taxa were highest in fill patches. Six days after the second flood, biomass was highest in stable patches, indicating a refugium function of these patches. The refugium patches consisted of average‐sized stones, in contrast to previous studies of flood refugia for benthic algae in which these refugia were always large and/or immobile substrata. Four weeks after the second flood, diatoms tended to be most abundant in scour patches. With one exception, these differences between patch types could not be attributed to differences in local near‐bed current velocity or water depth. 4. The effects of disturbance history were more complex than a simple refugium function of stable patches because algal patterns changed with time since the last disturbance, possibly depending on the successional state of the algal mats. 相似文献

Off the Po Delta in the northern Adriatic, three different foraminiferal associations were identified in the fraction >0.125 mm of 25 sediment samples. The first association concerns sample stations between depths of 5 and 13.5 m in the shallow, nutrient-rich belt and is characterised by dominant Ammonia beccarii. The second occupies the 29.5–38.5-m-deep, nutrient-rich zone of clay-rich sediment, where inputs from the Po are concentrated, and is dominated by Nonionella opima. The third association, in the 21–46-m-deep and nutrient-poor zone, is dominated by Textularia agglutinans. The same distribution of communities was obtained using total associations (living and dead specimens) and biocenosis (stained individuals). The good correspondence with the foraminiferal distributions described in the past indicates that, in spite of the occurrence of anoxic and dysoxic events, the environmental state in the northern Adriatic may be considered stable. 相似文献

Primary production in Watts Lake, Vestfold Hills, Antarctica (68°36S, 78°13E), was measured from March 1981 to February 1982. Phytoplankton production peaked in autumn and spring, with a September maximum (340 mgC m –2 d –1), then declined in summer and was not detectable in winter. Benthic algal production peaked in summer at 74 mgC m –2 d –1), Production strategies differed, with the more efficient phytoplankton adapted to growth at low light, while benthic production increased with increasing light in summer. Estimation of annual production was 10.1 gC m –2 and 5.5 gC m –2 for the phytoplankton and benthos respectively. 相似文献
