The effect of combination of mechanical and chemical pretreatment of municipal waste activated sludge (WAS) prior to anaerobic digestion was studied using a laboratory scale system with an objective to decrease volatile sulfur compounds in biogas and digested sludge. Mechanical pretreatment was conducted using depressurization of WAS through a valve from a batch pretreatment reactor pressurized at 75 ± 1 psi, while combined pretreatments were conducted using six different dosages of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ferrous chloride (FeCl2) along with mechanical pretreatment. About 37-46% removal of H2S in biogas occurred for different combined pretreatment conditions. Sludge solubilization achieved due to the mechanical pretreatment increased total cumulative methane production by 8-10% after 30 days during the biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. The pretreatment also improved dewaterability in terms of time to filter (TTF), and decreased methyl mercaptan generation potential of the digested sludge.  相似文献

A dual irradiation process involving aerobic thermophilic irradiation pretreatment (ATIP) and intermittent irradiation anaerobic digestion was developed to improve the digestion of waste-activated sludge. First, the effect of ATIP on further anaerobic digestion of activated sludge in batch mode was investigated. When exposed to ATIP for 24 h, the digestion reactor gave the highest methane yield, removed the most dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and showed the most effective reduction of VS compared to other irradiation times. This process was further enhanced by using an anaerobic fluidised-bed reactor packed with carbon felt in semi-continuous mode for digesting the pretreated activated sludge under intermittent irradiation conditions. Dual irradiation for 24 h followed by 60 min of anaerobic irradiation processing per day turned out to be optimal. This resulted in 65.3% of VS reduction, 83.9% of DOC removal ratio and 538 ml/g-VS of methane yield.  相似文献

The impact of increasing organic load on anaerobic digestion foaming was studied at both full and bench scale. Organic loadings of 1.25, 2.5 and 5 kg VS m−3 were applied to bench-scale digesters. Foaming was monitored at a full scale digester operated in a comparable organic loading range over 15 months. The bench scale batch studies identified 2.5 kg VS m−3 as a critical threshold for foam initiation while 5 kg VS m−3 resulted in persistent foaming. Investigation of a full scale foaming event corroborated the laboratory observation that foaming may be initiated at a loading rate of ?2.5 kg VS m−3. Experimental findings on foam composition and differences in the quality characteristics between foaming and non-foaming sludges indicated that foam initiation derived from the combined effect of the liquid and gas phases inside a digester and that the solids/biomass ultimately stabilized foaming.  相似文献

The algaSpirulina maxima was subjected to mechanical (ultrasonic + mechanical disintegration) and thermochemical pretreatments and used as a substrate in anaerobic digestion. Results indicate that the pretreatments increased the solubility of biomass and had a positive effect on acid forming bacteria. Thermochemical treatments produced compounds toxic to methanogenic bacteria especially when treatment conditions became more severe.  相似文献

Experiences with the dual digestion of municipal sewage sludge   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The dual digestion process was investigated using sludge samples collected at the WWTP of Tomaszow Mazowiecki (Poland). Mixed sludge was treated in a laboratory setup under batch and semi-continuous conditions. Dual digestion with a 1d SRT aerobic thermophilic pretreatment followed by an anaerobic step with 20 d of SRT turned out to be optimal, since a 44-46% VS reduction and a biogas yield of 480 dm(3)/kg VS fed were achieved. In the course of the process, the concentration of nitrogen in supernatant increased over 5 times and its major portion was converted into ammonia. Phosphorus also entered the supernatant, reaching over 200 g/m(3). The dual digestion noticeably deteriorated the sludge dewaterability. Following completion of the process, capillary suction time measurements averaged 64 s for the raw sludge, 400 s for aerobically pretreated sludge and 310-360 for the anaerobically digested sludge. Aerobic pretreatment consistently reduced Enterobacteriaceae content to below detectable limits.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of waste activated sludge (WAS) has been regarded as the rate limiting step of anaerobic sludge digestion. Therefore, in this study, the effect of ultrasound and hydraulic residence time during sludge hydrolysis was investigated with the goal of enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD). WAS was ultrasonically disintegrated for hydrolysis, and it was semi-continuously fed to an anaerobic digesters at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The results of these experiments showed that the solids and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies when using ultrasonically disintegrated sludge were higher during AD than the control sludge. The longer the HRT, the higher the removal efficiencies of solids and COD, while methane production increased with lower HRT. Sludge with 30% hydrolysis produced 7 × more methane production than the control sludge. The highest methane yields were 0.350 m(3)/kg volatile solids (VS)(add) and 0.301 m(3)/kg COD(con) for 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge, respectively. In addition, we found that excess ultrasound irradiation may inhibit AD since the 50% hydrolyzed sludge produced lower methane yields than 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge.  相似文献

Continuous anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge pretreated at low temperatures below 100°C increased methane generation by 30%. pH values of the digestion mixture increased, approximately from 0.3 to 0.55 by pretreatment, although its volatile fatty acids concentration was greater than the control. An abrupt increase in propionate : acetate ratio in digestion stage (e.g. from less than 1:1 to over 3.5 :1), provided a reliable indicator for impending failure. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An investigation of hydrodynamic conditions and their impacts on sludge digestion in internal circulation anaerobic digester (ICAD) was conducted. This novel sludge digester employing upflow reactor concept was composed of reaction zone, riser and downcomer, etc. Part of the generated biogas was injected to the reaction zone to intensify the circulation in ICAD in order to enhance the mass transfer. The advanced particle image velocimetry was used to explore the hydrodynamic conditions at micro scale. The results revealed that the average shear rate in the reaction zone and downcomer was linearly correlated with the Reynolds number; the shear rates in ICAD revealed an order as riser > downcomer > reaction zone. Thermophilic digestion of waste activated sludge in a pilot ICAD for 5.25 d combined with thermal pretreatment at 60 °C for 1 d was conducted under various hydrodynamic conditions. The survey at global level demonstrated that both the longer sludge retention time than the hydraulic retention time and the satisfactory mass transfer could be realized and as consequences, the maximal biogas production rate and VSS removal were obtained when the Reynolds number of the reaction zone was approximately 0.53. This digester under the optimal hydrodynamic conditions demonstrated good degradation capacity and buffer capability to resist various shock loadings.  相似文献

Experiments are described in which municipal wastewater is submitted to reverse osmosis. During a test period of two months a tubular apparatus, operated batchwise, maintained its original flux and rejection, the permeate being of good quality as a raw material for drinking water. The wastewater was concentrated 7.7 times. Continuous anaerobic digestion of the brine removed over 90% of the BOD evolving the expected amount of methane. The overall process is considered in its context of environmental and energetic aspects and is compared with a conventional treatment. This reveals clear perspectives for practical application in urban areas.  相似文献

The extent of reduction in selected microorganisms was tested during both aerobic wastewater treatment and anaerobic digestion of sludge at the wastewater treatment plant in Ottawa to compare the removal of two encysted pathogenic protozoa with that of microbial indicators. Samples collected included the raw wastewater, the primary effluent, the treated wastewater, the mixed sludge, the decanted liquor, and the cake. All of the raw sewage samples were positive for Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts, as well as for the other microorganisms tested. During aerobic wastewater treatment (excluding the anaerobic sludge digestion), Cryptosporidium and Giardia were reduced by 2.96 log10 and 1.40 log10, respectively. Clostridium perfringens spores, Clostridium perfringens total counts, somatic coliphages, and heterotrophic bacteria were reduced by approximately 0.89 log10, 0.96 log10, 1.58 log10, and 2.02 log10, respectively. All of the other microorganisms were reduced by at least 3.53 log10. Sludge samples from the plant were found to contain variable densities of microorganisms. Variability in microbial concentrations was sometimes great between samples, stressing the importance of collecting a large number of samples over a long period of time. In all cases, the bacterial concentrations in the cake (dewatered biosolids) samples were high even if reductions in numbers were observed with some bacteria. During anaerobic sludge digestion, no statistically significant reduction was observed for Clostridium perfringens, Enterococcus sp., Cryptosporidium oocysts, and Giardia cysts. A 1-2 log10 reduction was observed with fecal coliforms and heterotrophic bacteria. However, the method utilized to detect the protozoan parasites does not differentiate between viable and nonviable organisms. On the other hand, total coliforms and somatic coliphages were reduced by 0.35 log10 and 0.09 log10, respectively. These results demonstrate the relative persistence of the protozoa in sewage sludge during wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Summary Cellulolytic enzymes from a laboratory anaerobic digester fed municipal solid waste were examined with respect to pH and temperature. The pH optimum was pH 6.6, considerably lower than the pH range in which digesters are normally operated (pH 7.2–7.6). The optimum temperature was between 50 and 60°C, rather than the 35–37°C range in which most digesters are controlled.  相似文献

Enzyme additives are believed to improve septic tank performance by increasing the hydrolysis and digestion rates and maintaining a healthy microbial population. Previous studies reported mixed results on the effectiveness of enzymes on mesophilic and thermophilic digestion, and it is not clear whether enzymes would be effective under septic tank conditions where there is no heating or mixing, quantities of enzymes added are small, and they can be washed out quickly. In this study, batch reactors and continuous-flow reactors designed and operated as septic tanks were used to evaluate whether enzymatic treatment would increase the hydrolysis and digestion rates in primary sludge. Total solids, volatile solids, total suspended solids, total and soluble chemical oxygen demand, concentrations of protein, carbohydrate, ammonia and volatile acids in sludge and effluent samples were measured to determine the differences in digestion rates in the presence and absence of enzymes. Overall, no significant improvement was observed in enzyme-treated reactors compared with the control reactors.  相似文献

During wastewater treatment, most organic matter is transferred to a solid phase commonly known as sludge or biosolids. The high cost of sludge management and the growing interest in alternative energy sources have prompted proposals for different strategies to optimize biogas production during anaerobic sludge treatment. Because of the high solid content and complex structure of sludge-derived organic matter, methane production during digestion is limited at the hydrolysis step. Therefore, large digester volume and long retention times of over 20 days are necessary to achieve adequate stabilization. Pre-treatments can be used to hydrolyze sludge and consequently improve biogas production, solids removal and sludge quality after digestion. This paper reviews the main pre-treatment processes, with emphasis on the most recent developments. An overview of the different technologies is presented, discussing their effects on sludge properties and anaerobic digestion. Future challenges and concerns related to pre-treatment assessment and implementation are also addressed.  相似文献

The effect of ultrasound and gamma-irradiation used as pre-treatments for the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures was examined. Untreated activated sludge was also subjected to anaerobic digestion at these temperatures as a control. The sonication time was 90 s using a Soniprep 150 (MSE Scientific Instruments) which operated at 23 kHz and had been adjusted to give an output of 47 W and the gamma-irradiation dose was 500 krad. The digesters were operated in a semi-continuous mode, being fed with fresh sludge every 24 h at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 8, 10 and 12 days. Over the 24 h period the differences between the digesters, in terms of volatile solids (VS) reductions and biogas production, were not statistically significant for any particular set of conditions. Thermophilic digestion performed better than mesophilic digestion in terms of biogas production, VS reductions (except at HRT of 8 days) and specific methane yields and the optimum retention time was 10 days, at both temperatures. When gas production over the initial eight hours (probably the hydrolytic stage) was examined, it was found that the gas production rates for pre-treated sludges were higher than those for untreated sludges. This was most pronounced at thermophilic temperatures and a HRT of 10 days. Sonication did not affect the numbers of faecal coliforms in the sludge. However, gamma-radiation caused a 3-log reduction and, when coupled with mesophilic digestion, gave a product which contained < 100 g(-1) TS. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion produced sludges which contained < 1 g(-1) TS irrespective of any pre-treatment.  相似文献

To decrease the HS and induce effective anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge (WAS), the micro-organisms concentration within the sludge were ruptured by a mechanical jet stream and smashed under a pressure of 30 bar. Using this procedure, the HS concentration was decreased from 30-50 mg/l of intact WAS to 27-240 g/l.  相似文献

The degradation of municipal solid waste (MSW) under mesophilic conditions can be enhanced by exchanging leachate between fresh waste and stabilised waste. The optimum point in time when leachate from an anaerobically digesting waste bed can be used to initiate degradation of another waste bed might occur when the leachate of the digesting waste bed is highly active with cellulolytic and methanogenic bacteria. In this study, the cellulolytic activity of the leachate was measured using the cellulose-azure assay. As products of hydrolysis are soluble compounds, the rate of generation of these compounds was estimated based on a soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) balance around the fresh waste bed. It was found that once the readily soluble material present in MSW was washed out there was very little generation of SCOD without the production of methane, indicating that flushing leachate from a stabilised waste bed resulted in a balanced inoculation of the fresh waste bed. With the onset of sustained methanogenesis, the rate of SCOD generation equalled the SCOD released from the digester as methane. The experimental findings also showed that cellulolytic activities of the leachate samples closely followed the trend of SCOD generation.  相似文献

Waste activated sludge (WAS) is difficult to degrade in anaerobic digestion systems and pretreatments have been shown to speed up the hydrolysis stage. Here the effects of acid pretreatment (pH 6-1) using HCl on subsequent digestion and dewatering of WAS have been investigated. Optimisation of acid dosing was performed considering digestibility benefits and level of acid required. Pretreatment to pH 2 was concluded to be the most effective. In batch digestion this yielded the same biogas after 13 days as compared to untreated WAS at 21 days digestion. In semi-continuous digestion experiments (12 day hydraulic retention time at 35 °C) it resulted in a 14.3% increase in methane yield compared to untreated WAS, also Salmonella was eradicated in the digestate. Dewatering investigations suggested that the acid pretreated WAS required 40% less cationic polymer addition to achieve the same cake solid content. A cost analysis was also carried out.  相似文献
