Arbusculin-D from Artemisia arbuscula ssp. Arbuscula

Abstract-Arbusculin-D (I), a new eudesmanolide, has been isolated from Artemisia arbuscula Nutt. ssp. arbuscula and is present also in A. arbuscula Nutt. ssp. thermopola Beetle. It represents a structural variant in the lactone grouping.     

Sesquiterpene lactones of Artemisia: TLC analysis and taxonomic significance

Samples of Artemisia arbuscula ssp. arbuscula, A. tridentata ssp. tridentata, ssp. wyomingensis, ssp. vaseyana and ssp. vaseyana f. spiciformis were collected from various locations in Montana and analyzed by TLC for their sesquiterpene lactone content. Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata and ssp. wyomingensis are distinct morphologically and chemically, whereas ssp. vaseyana has three distinct chemical groups not yet separated morphologically. Artemisia arbuscula ssp. arbuscula and A. tridentata ssp. vaseyana f. spiciformis are easily separated by morphology but have identical TLC patterns. It has been further shown that the sesquiterpene lactones produced for a particular species or subspecies are the same regardless of the time of the year collected, although the quantity varies from winter to summer.     

Sesquiterpene alcohols from Artemisia pygmaea

Artemisia pygmaea Gray contains two sesquiterpene alcohols: the known cryptomeridiol (I) and pygmol (II), a new compound. No sesquiterpene lactones were found in the plant although other species of the section Tridentatae Rydb., with which A. pygmaea has been classified, are usually rich in lactones.

Artemisia cana Pursh ssp. cana collected in Montana contained desacetylmatricarin, canin, artecanin and artevasin. Artecanin has been shown to have the structure 3 on the basis of the physical and spectral properties. The structure of canin has been revised to 2.     

Sesquiterpene lactones of Podanthus mitiqui

Ovatifolin and two new sesquiterpene lactones, deacetylovatifolin and arturin (1β-hydroxy-8β-angeloyloxy-eudesmane-4(15),11(13)-diene-6α,12-olide, have been isolated from stems and leaves of Podanthus mitiqui. Two of these compounds showed cytotoxic activity.

Inezia integrifolia afforded, in addition to known compounds, three new eudesmanolides and a guaianolide. Two of the eudesmanolides were obtained as a mixture. The relative position of the ester groups could not be determined with certainty. The chemotaxonomy is discussed briefly.     

Sesquiterpene lactones of Artemisia arbuscula and A. tridentata

Chloroform extracts of Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana f. spiciformis (Osterhout) Beetle and Artemisia arbuscula Nutt. ssp. arbuscula gave identical TLC patterns and contained the known germacranolides tatridin-A (I) and tatridin-B (II), and two new germacranolides deacetyllaurenobiolide (III) and spiciformin (IV). The structures of these lactones were shown through spectral studies and chemical transformations. Deacetyllaurenobiolide was converted to the known germacranolide laurenobiolide (IIIb) and spiciformin (IV) was synthesized from deacetyllaurenobiolide along with an isomeric epoxy lactone (V).     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Centaurea species

The investigation of further Centaurea species gave, in addition to known compounds, one new sesquiterpene lactone, 11β, 15-dihydroxysaussurea lactone, of the elemanolide type.

The title plant has been shown to contain the sesquiterpene lactones erioflorin methacrylate (I), erioflorin (III), erioflorin acetate (VIII) and a new lactone, ovatifolin (X).     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Parthenium tomentosum

Four populations of Parthenium tomentosum var. tomentosum were examinated. In addition to the known lactones, ivalbatine, acetyl ivalbatine, parthomentine, incanine and ligulatine C, three new pseudoguaianolides: 4-O-desacetyl ligulatine C; 1-dehydroperuvinine and parthoximentine were also isolated. Chemical and spectroscopic methods were used for their structural determination.     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Centaurea arbutifolia

The investigation of the aerial parts of Centaurea arbutifolia afforded four new sesquiterpene lactones; two germacranolides and two elemanolides, plus aguerin A. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by partial synthesis.
