The volatile leaf oils were analysed from adult leaves of five Eucalyptus species growing in a common environment. The trial consisted of two provenances of the species E. globulus and one provenance each of E. nitens and E. denticulata from the southern blue gum group and two provenances each of the species E. delegatensis and E. regnans from the ash group. Oil yields from adult leaves of E. nitens (0.7% dry wt.) and E. denticulata (0.8%) were markedly lower than those from the other three species (3.0–6.1%). Volatile leaf oils of E. delegatensis and E. regnans were rich in α- and β-phellandrene, cis- and trans-p-menth-2-en-1-ol, while E. regnans was also rich in α-, β- and γ-eudesmol. In contrast, volatile leaf oils of E. globulus were rich in 1,8-cineole and α-pinene and E. denticulata rich in γ-terpinene and p-cymene. Oil composition of E. nitens was intermediate between E. globulus and E. denticulata. Differences in oil yield and oil composition between species indicated a strong genetic basis for these variables.  相似文献

Babesia caballi caused pathological changes in the vector tick, Anocentor nitents. These included the loss of hemocytes, reddish-brown discoloration of the hemolymph, retardation in clotting, and reduction in egg production. Primary cultures were initiated from A. nitens embryos transovarially infected with B. caballi. Cell lines that were isolated were morphologically similar and composed of stellate, fusiform, and hemocyte-like cells, but none was visibly infected with B. caballi. Primary cultures from heavily infected ticks were not viable and did not develop into lines. Kinetes from hemolymph and organs of A. nitens were cocultivated with cell lines isolated from embryos of A. nitens, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. They attached to and actively penetrated the cells. Cells that were penetrated by or infected with B. caballi showed rounding off, degeneration, and lysis. In Giemsa-stained spreads prepared after 1 or 2 days in vitro, more kinetes were associated with R. appendiculatus cells when the medium contained A. nitens egg extract (TEE). Ninety percent of the B. caballi kinetes were always found within or in close contact with cells from A. nitens, cultured with or without TEE. The parasites were club shaped, amoeboid, or round. Intracellular Babesia were frequently lying adjacent to the host cell nucleus. In the cultures the parasites were detected by light microscopy for 3 to 5 days; they did not transform into other tick-associated stages and were not seen after 1 week. This is the first report of the cultivation of tick stages of B. caballi in tick cell cultures.  相似文献

A detailed chemical analysis of the essential oil of Asphodelus albus roots performed in this work, in combination with a chemical synthesis approach – the synthesis of selected compounds and their detailed spectral analysis – has led to the identification of a series of new natural products, the esters of furan-3-ylmethanol: furan-3-ylmethyl 2-methylpropanoate, furan-3-ylmethyl butanoate, furan-3-ylmethyl 2-methylbutanoate, furan-3-ylmethyl 3-methylbutanoate, furan-3-ylmethyl pentanoate, furan-3-ylmethyl 4-methylpentanoate, and furan-3-ylmethyl hexanoate.  相似文献

The chromatographic analysis of the volatile leaf oil of Pinus pinaster Ait. showed 42% of monoterpene hydrocarbons (α-pinene, camphene, β-pinene, myrcene, 3-carene, limonene, cis-ocimene, terpinolene, para-cymene, 35% of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (cubebene, copaene, caryophyllene, humulene, germacrene D, α- and γ-muurolenes, δ- and γ-cadinenes) and 23% of oxygenated compounds including esters (linalyl, bornyl, geranyl, neryl and farnesyl acetates), alcohols (cis-hexenol, linalool, α-fenchol, trans-pinocarveol, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, dihydrocarveol, guaiol, junenol and α-cadinol), one aldehyde (hexenal) and one ketone (piperitone). Three non terpenoid phenylethyl esters were also identified: phenylethyl isovalerate, methyl-2 burtyate and 3-3 dimethylacrylate. Some alcohols and mainly α-terpineol and linalool seemed to be formed during the steam distillation process, they were absent when the leaf oil was obtained by maceration of small portions of leaves in the usual solvents of terpenes.  相似文献

The osmotic potential and effects of plasmolysis were investigated in two different Klebsormidium strains from alpine habitats by incubation in 300–2,000 (3,000) mM sorbitol. Several members of this genus were previously found to tolerate desiccation in the vegetative state yet information was lacking on the osmotic potentials of these algae. The strains were morphologically determined as Klebsormidium crenulatum and Klebsormidium nitens. These species belong to distinct clades, as verified by phylogenetic analysis of the rbcL gene. K. crenulatum is part of to the K. crenulatum/mucosum (‘F’ clade) and K. nitens of the ‘E2’ clade. Plasmolysis occurred in K. crenulatum at 800 mM sorbitol (961 mOsmol kg?1, Ψ?=??2.09 MPa) and in K. nitens at 600 mM sorbitol (720 mOsmol kg?1, Ψ?=??1.67 MPa). These are extraordinarily high osmotic values (very negative osmotic potentials) compared with values reported for other green algae. In K. crenulatum, the maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in the light-saturated range was 116 μmol O2 h?1 mg?1 chl a. Incubation in 1,000 mM sorbitol decreased Pmax to 74.1% of the initial value, whereas 2,000 mM sorbitol (Ψ?=??5.87 MPa) lead to an almost complete loss of oxygen production. In K. nitens, Pmax was 91 μmol O2 h?1 mg?1 chl a under control conditions and incubation in 800 mM sorbitol did not decrease Pmax, 2,000 mM sorbitol decreased Pmax only to about 62.6% of the initial value whereas 3,000 mM sorbitol stopped oxygen evolution. This indicated a broader amplitude for photosynthesis in the examined strain of K. nitens. Control samples and samples plasmolysed for 3 h in 800 mM sorbitol (K. nitens), 1,000 mM sorbitol (K. crenulatum), or 2,000 mM sorbitol were investigated by transmission electron microscopy after chemical or high-pressure freeze fixation. In cells undergoing plasmolysis the protoplasts were retracted from the cell wall, the cytoplasm appeared dense, vacuoles were small and fragmented, and the cytoplasm was filled with ribosomes. Thin cytoplasmic strands were connected to the cell wall; 2,000 mM sorbitol increased the effect. The content of soluble carbohydrates in these two strains was investigated by HPLC, as this is one known mechanism for cells to maintain high osmotic pressure of the cytosol. Both Klebsormidium species contained diverse soluble carbohydrates, including a dominant mixed peak of unidentified oligosaccharides, and more minor amounts of raffinose, sucrose, glucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, inositol, fructose, glycerol, mannitol, and sorbitol. The total content of soluble carbohydrates was approximately 1.2% of the dry weight, indicating that this is not a major factor contributing to the high osmotic potential in these strains of Klebsormidium.  相似文献

Mosses are keystone species in peatlands and are an important part of the vegetation of the pre-mined peatlands. Therefore, mosses should be included in rehabilitation projects following oil sands exploitation in north-western Canada. However, mosses growing in post-mined landscapes must tolerate elevated salinity levels found in oil sands process water (OSPW). Knowledge of salinity tolerance and thresholds for fen mosses is needed to place these mosses in the newly created landscapes. We tested the effects of NaCl and Na2SO4 on four fen moss species growing in Petri dishes in growth chambers. We simulated two scenarios: (1) four immersion times (¼, 1, 3 and 7 days) in NaCl (0%, 20%, 60% or 100% of the concentration found in OSPW) mimicking periodic flooding and (2) a permanent saline influence (NaCl or Na2SO4 alone or in combination at 0%, 30%, 50% or 70% of the concentrations found in OSPW) mimicking situations of high water tables with different contamination levels. The effects on moss growth were estimated by counting new innovations of Bryum pseudotriquetrum, Campylium stellatum, Sphagnum warnstorfii and Tomenthypnum nitens. All tested mosses tolerated saline levels typically found in post-mined landscapes (up to 500 mg L−1 of NaCl and 400 mg L−1 of Na2SO4) for up to 100 days of exposure. Short periods of immersion (up to 7 days independently of salt concentrations) induced the production of innovation in non-Sphagnum species, but S. warnstorfii was more rapidly impacted at higher salt concentrations. Short pulses of salt (from 6 h to 7 days) did not influence the formation of new innovations for C. stellatum and T. nitens. Salt type (NaCl and/or Na2SO4) had no effect on moss growth. However, a longer exposure (100 days) with saline water, even at low concentrations, diminished the formation of new innovations for B. pseudotriquetrum and T. nitens. C. stellatum was the least affected by salinity and thus we suggest it is the best species to reintroduce in constructed fens.  相似文献

The composition of the essential oils of Lomatium dasycarpum ssp. dasycarpum, Lomatium lucidum, Lomatium macrocarpum var. macrocarpum and Lomatium utriculatum is described. Identification of components was determined from their GC, GC/MS data and many were confirmed by coinjections with authentic samples. Several components were isolated by liquid and gas chromatographic techniques and their structures confirmed from their 1H and 13C NMR spectral data. 2-Methyl and 3-methylbutanoates were the major components of L. dasycarpum fruits as well as stems and leaves oils. β-Phellandrene/limonene, decanal, dodecanal, bornyl acetate, germacrene D, α-humulene and bicyclogermacrene were the major components of the corresponding L. lucidum oils. α-Pinene and β-pinene were the major components of the fruit oil of L. macrocarpum. Its stem and leaf oil was rich in peucenin 7-methyl ether, β-caryophyllene, (Z)-3-hexenol, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and (E)-2-hexenal. Sabinene, (Z)-ligustilide, terpinen-4-ol, β-phellandrene/limonene, β-caryophyllene, myrcene, α-pinene and β-pinene were the major compounds in L. utriculatum fruit oil, while its stem and leaf oil was rich in (Z)-ligustilide, palmitic acid, terpinen-4-ol, linoleic acid and germacrene D. (Z)-Falcarinol was a major component of all the four root oils.  相似文献

The handicrafts made fromSyngonanthus nitens scapes have been an important source of income for rural communities in the Jalapão region of Brazil since the late 1990s. This study analyzedS. nitens harvest and management techniques and the economic importance of the handicrafts. We also tested the effects of harvest onS. nitens population ecology. Handicrafts provide about US$1,800/year per artisan, being especially important to women. Experimental scape harvesting in mid-October, which is when knowledgeable artisans harvest and when the seeds are mature, had no consistent effects on population density, plant survival, or reproduction (clonal or sexual) after one year. Since 40% of the new recruits come from seeds, harvest after seed maturation, combined with removal of only the scapes and not the flowerheads, can allow forS. nitens seeds to remain in the populations and help ensure sustainability of the growingS. nitens handicraft activity. Important economic aspects ofS. nitens harvest sustainability include the high value of the handicrafts and the fact they are not perishable.  相似文献

This study examines the effect of different soil temperatures on root growth in seedlings of Eucalyptus pauciflora Sieber ex Sprengel subsp. pauciflora and Eucalyptus nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden. Seedlings were grown in a glasshouse in pots containing soil. Pots were held in water baths maintained at 3, 7 or 13°C, whilst shoots were exposed to ambient glasshouse temperatures. The experiments were designed to separate direct effects of soil temperature from effects due to differences in seedling size. In the first experiment, seedlings were grown to constant height (25 cm for both species), in the second to constant time (100 days for E. pauciflora and 64 days for E. nitens) and in the third experiment seedlings were transferred between soil temperatures. The rate of growth of both species increased with increasing soil temperature. E. nitens grew faster than E. pauciflora at 7 and 13°C, but E. pauciflora grew faster than E. nitens at 3°C. The rate of browning of roots increased with decreasing soil temperature and at a faster rate in E. nitens than E. pauciflora. Root length was highly correlated to root mass within diameter and colour classes (r2 > 0.7). However, brown roots were heavier than white roots. Consequently, changes in root mass did not reflect changes in root length when the proportion of brown to white root also changed. For example, at a constant height of 25 cm at 3°C, E. nitens had greater root mass but lesser root length than E. pauciflora. E. pauciflora at 3°C grew faster, and had more root length and less brown roots than E. nitens. This supports the argument that E. pauciflora is better adapted than E. nitens to survive and grow at lower soil temperatures. Received: 16 December 1996 / Accepted: 2 April 1997  相似文献

The chemical composition of the volatile oil of 10 trees each of two Oregon populations of the western juniper was determined by a computerized GC-MS method. The identity of the major components, sabinene, α-pinene, α- and γ-terpinene, p-cymene, limonene, terpinen-4-ol and bornyl acetate was confirmed. In addition, tricyclene, α-thujene, camphene, β-pinene, α- and β-phellandrene, car-3-ene, trans-ocimene, linalool oxide, terpinolene, trans-sabinene hydrate, camphor, camphene hydrate, borneol, α-terpineol, p-cymenol, methyl citronellate, citronellyl acetate, carvacrol, cuminic aldehyde, β-bourbonene, several cadinene and cadinol isomers, elemol, γ-, β- and α-eudesmol, and manoyl oxide were identified. Santene, citronellol, and aromatic ethers of the safrole-eugenol type were not found. Tree-to-tree variability of the relative percentages of these terpenes was fairly large and chemosystematic implications are discussed briefly.  相似文献

Biota dependant on early seral stages or frequently disturbed habitats belong to the most rapidly declining components of European biodiversity. This is also the case for Carabus nitens, which is threatened across Western and Central Europe. We studied one of the last remaining populations of this ground beetle in the Czech Republic, which inhabits post-extraction peat bogs. In line with findings from previous studies, we show that C. nitens prefers patches characterized by higher light intensity and lower vegetation cover. Abundance of females was positively correlated with the cover of plant species requiring higher temperature. In addition, we demonstrate its preference for periodically moist, but not wet or inundated plots, suggesting that the transition between dry heathland and wet peat bog might be the optimal habitat for this species. This hypothesis is further supported by results showing a positive correlation between the abundance of C. nitens and vegetation cover comprising of a mix of species typical for heathland, peat bog, and boreal habitats. Our results show that C. nitens mobility is comparable to other large wingless carabids. The maximum covered distance was ~?500 m in a month. To ensure the survival of this population, sites of recent peat extraction should be spared from reclamation and afforestation. In contrast, active measures should be taken to facilitate nutrient removal, disturbance of vegetation cover, and the creation of depressions with a humid microclimate. These actions will create a mosaic of heath, bog, and bare ground, which seems to be the preferred habitat of C. nitens at our study site.  相似文献

Hygraula nitens is a New Zealand native moth with aquatic larvae that feed on submerged aquatic plants. The larvae have been mainly observed using native Potamogeton and Myriophyllum species as a food source, although some studies reported larvae feeding on the alien macrophytes Hydrilla verticillata, Lagarosiphon major and Ceratophyllum demersum. Experimental mesocosm studies showed larvae had a major effect on H. verticillata, C. demersum, L. major, Elodea canadensis and Egeria densa. In both no choice and choice experiments H. nitens larvae showed a clear preference for and the highest consumption of C. demersum, while the native macrophyte Myriophyllum triphyllum ranked fourth out of five alien and two native plant species, indicating a preference of the larvae for alien macrophytes. Additional choice experiments using C. demersum, sampled from different waters in NZ, illustrated that there was a clear difference in H. nitens preference for plants based on their source. However although C. demersum had the lowest leaf dry matter content (LDMC) compared with the other macrophytes, neither the LDMC nor leaf carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus or total phenolic contents alone could explain the preferences of H. nitens, and we conclude that food choice is based on a combination of these and/or additional factors.  相似文献

Utilizing GLC, IR, combined GC-MS, the following constituents were identified in the essential oil of Psiadia salviifolia; β-pinene, limonene, γ-terpinene, p-cymene, α-copaene, linalool, β-bourbonene, α-himachalene, γ-cadinene, δ-cadinene, -γ-elemene, and a hydroxy derivative of calamenene. A new monoterpene hydrocarbon was also isolated which from MS and IR evidence was named as 7-methyl-3-methylene-octa-1,4-diene.  相似文献

The effects of cold-induced photoinhibition on Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens seedlings were assessed between planting and age 23 weeks. The seedlings were subjected to four treatments before planting: non-hardened (NH) E. globulus and E. nitens, cold-hardened (CH) E. nitens, and nutrient-starved (NS) E. nitens. Seedlings were planted alongside established 1-year-old E. nitens saplings. The experimental site was at 350 m above sea level, which is considered marginal for the establishment of E. globulus plantations due to low mean minimum temperatures. Cold and sunny conditions after frost increased photoinhibition in the order: NH E. globulus > NH and CH E. nitens > NS and established E. nitens. As a result there was 20% mortality of NH E. globulus seedlings. NS E. nitens seedlings were severely photoinhibited and had high anthocyanin levels at planting; levels of photoinhibition decreased after planting, anthocyanin levels remained high and there was no mortality. Carotenoid levels were low in E. globulus compared to E. nitens treatments. It was concluded that cold-induced photoinhibition is a factor determining the range of environments where E. globulus can be successfully planted, and not frost tolerance alone. Anthocyanin was synthesised in response to increased photoinhibition. Anthocyanin levels were correlated to the severity of the photoinhibition. Thus, E. nitens seedlings nutrient starved in the nursery are pre-conditioned to photoinhibitory conditions experienced soon after planting. This treatment is a useful risk-management tool where cold-induced photoinhibition is likely to occur during seedling establishment.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the water-distilled essential oil and n-hexane–ether extract of Teucrium leucocladum Boiss. were determined by GLC and GLC–MS. Altogether 72 compounds were identified. The sesquiterpene alcohols, patchouli alcohol (31.24% and 29.66%) and α-cadinol (9.29% and 21.54%) were the main components in the oil and the extract, respectively. α-Cadinol was isolated and characterized using MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral analyses. Furthermore, the oil and the extract were tested for their bacterostatic and antifungal activities; they showed broad and potent activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans. A marked larvicidal activity of the essential oil, n-hexane–ether extract and crude ethanolic extract was also observed against Culex pipiens, Musca domestica and Ceratitis capitata larvae.  相似文献

Widdringtonia is the only genus of the 16 genera of Cupressaceae present in South Africa. This genus is represented by three species in South Africa; W. nodiflora, W. schwarzii and W. cedarbergensis (= W. juniperoides) and the latter listed as critically endangered. Cedarwood oil (generally obtained from Juniperus species) is widely used as a fragrance material in several consumer products, however, no data has been published on the volatiles of the Clanwilliam cedar (W. cedarbergensis) native to South Africa. The essential oil composition of the wood and leaf oil isolated by hydro-distillation were analysed by GC–MS. The two oils were distinctly different. Twenty compounds representing 93.8% of the total oil were identified in the leaf oil which was dominated by terpinen-4-ol (36.0%), sabinene (19.2%), γ-terpinene (10.4%), α-terpinene (5.5%) and myrcene (5.5%). Twenty six compounds representing 89.5% of the total were identified in the wood oil with the predominance of thujopsene (47.1%), α-cedrol (10.7%), widdrol (8.5%) and cuparene (4.0%).  相似文献

The study evaluates in vivo antimalarial activity of arteether and garlic pearl oil combination in Plasmodium berghei-infected mouse model of malaria. 72 h (Day 3) post infection, at 2–4% parasitemia, mice were treated with single dose intramuscular injection of α-β arteether, at 750 μg, in combination with three 100 μL oral doses of garlic pearl oil on Day 3, Day 4 and Day 5. Following the treatment, 100% protection and survival of mice were observed. Inhibition of parasitemia in combination treated animals and protection during recrudescence interval of α-β arteether monotherapy was observed in Giemsa-stained blood smears. In addition, a striking increase in anti-parasite antibody IgG contributing protective immunity during the recrudescence phase was observed. These results correlate with western blot analysis, where sera from the recrudescence stage and later period of arteether and garlic oil combination treated animals found to interact with several parasite specific proteins as compared to controls. The present approach shows that arteether and garlic pearl oil combination provides complete protection in P. berghei-infected mice. Thus, for the first time, garlic pearl oil appears to be an ideal antimalarial candidate in artemisinin combination therapy.  相似文献
