Eremophilane derivatives and other constituents from Senecio species

The investigation and reinvestigation respectively of 23 Senecio species afforded 11 further cacalol derivatives, a furoeremophilone, 17 eremophilanes, 4 bisabolene derivatives, a shikimic acid derivative, a bis-prenylated p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, menth-2-en- 1,7-diol and a cumol derivative. The configuration of some eremophilanes have been revised. Structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The results are summarized in a table. The chemotaxonomic aspects agree with those of previous investigations.     

Eudesmanolides and costic acid derivatives from Flourensia macrophylla

The aerial parts of Flourensia macrophylla afforded, in addition to compounds similar to those from other Flourensia species, four new eudesman     

Isocedrene derivatives and other sesquiterpenes from moscharia pinnatifida

From the aerial parts of Moscharia pinnatifida nine further α-isocedrene, two guaiane, three cyperene and two nerolidol derivatives were isolated. The structures were elucidated by high field NMR studies. Chemotaxonomic aspects are discussed.     

Bisabolene derivatives from Stevia salicifolia

The aerial parts of Stevia salicifolia afforded two new bisabolene type sesquiterpenes. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic, chemical transformations and correlation with 15-acetoxy bisabol-1-one.     

Sesquisabinene derivatives from Haplocarpha species

The roots of two Haplocarpha species afforded, in addition to sesquisabinene itself, three of its derivatives.     

Polyacetylenes from Chrysanthemum leucanthemum

Fifteen acetylenic compounds have been isolated and characterized from the flower heads of Chrysanthemum leucanthemum L. Five of these acetylenes have not previously been published as naturally occurring compounds. These are: 1,7(c)-hexadecadien-10,12,14-triyne; 1,8(c)-heptadecadien-11,13,15-triyne; 4(c)-tridecen-7,9,11-triyn-l-ol; 1,8(t)-hexadecadien-10,12,14-triyn-(6·7)-oxirane; and [3(t),5(t)-tridecadien-7,9,11-triyn-l-yl]-3-methyl-2-butenoate. The first three compounds are interesting since they are important intermediates in previously postulated biogenetic pathways. Ten acetylenes have been identified from the roots of the same plant, all of these having different structures from those of the flower heads. One of the acetylenes, [3(t), 5(t)-tridecadien-7,9,11-triyn-l-yl]-3-methylbutyrate, from the roots has never been reported as a naturally occurring compound.     

Further cadinene derivatives from Heterotheca latifolia

A reinvestigation of the aerial parts of Heterotheca latifolia afforded four new cadinene derivatives.     

Three cadinene derivatives and a prostaglandin-like acid from Chromolaena species

An investigation of the aerial parts of Chromolaena chasleae afforded a prostaglandin-like acid, whose structure followed from the ¹H NMR spectral data and from the reaction with periodate, which afforded a hemiacetal. From a new Chromolaena species, three novel cadinene derivatives were isolated, which were closely related to those isolated previously from this genus.     

Cacalol derivatives from Senecio lydenburgensis

An investigation of Senecio lydenburgensis afforded eight new cacalol and cacalohastin derivatives. Their structures were deduced from the molecular formulae and ¹H NMR spectra.     

Further silphinene derivatives from Cineraria geifolia var. glabra

A reinvestigation of the sesquiterpenes from the aerial parts of Cineraria geifolia var. glabra afforded eight new silphinene derivatives. One of these compounds had been isolated previously but its structure had not been elucidated with certainty. The stereochemistry of a corresponding isovalerate from Callilepis salicifolia has to be revised.     

A new acetylenic ester from Artemisia absinthium

trans-Dehydromatricaria ester, a new thiopene derivative, a C₁₄-trans-spiroketalenol ether and a C₁₃-trans-spiroketalenol ether were isolated from the roots of Artemisia absinthium collected in E. Austria. Plants grown from a Finnish source gave an identical acetylenic profile.     

Trixikingolides and germacrene derivatives from Trixis species

The investigation of two further Trixis species afforded five new sesquiterpenes related to trixikingolide, six new germacrene derivatives and a sesquiterpene derived from rotundene. Some further known compounds were isolated too, which in part may be of chemotaxonomic significance. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and a few chemical transformations. The relative position of the ester groups in eight of the new sesquiterpenoids however, could not be established with certainty as partial saponifications were not successful.     

Labdane and dehydronerolidol derivatives from Brickellia diffusa

An investigation of Brickellia diffusa afforded three new dehydronerolidol derivatives and five new labdane derivatives, all highly oxygenated. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and a few chemical transformations. The compounds isolated showed close relationships to those isolated from Brickellia sp.     

New cadinene derivatives from Heterotheca latifolia

Heterotheca latifolia afforded several new acids all derived from cadinane.     

Caryophyllane derivatives from Pulicaria scabra

The investigation of Pulicaria scabra afforded in addition to known compounds seven new caryophyllane derivatives, three of them etherified with a caryophyllane derivative and one esterified with a caryophyllane derived alcohol. The structures were elucidated by high field ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The chemistry of this species is similar to that of P. dysenterica but differs from that of the other genera of the subtribe Inulinae.     

Cuauthemone sesquiterpenoids from Blumea alata

The investigation of five Blumea species afforded, in addition to known compounds, several cuauthemone derivatives, most of them being 7,11-epoxides, some thymol derivatives, an eremophilane epoxide and a himachalane diol. From Pterocaulon virgatum a further himachalane derivative was isolated. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and in part by partial synthesis.
