Alkaloids and flavonoids of Melicope indica

The following substances were isolated from the leaves of Melicope indica: N-methylatanine dictamnine, evolitrine, meliternatin, melibentin and a new flavonoid which was shown to be 3,5,8-trimethoxy-6,7: 3′,4′-dimethylenedioxyflavone by its spectroscopic properties.     

Benzofuranoid neolignans from Aniba simulans

Forteen neolignans, isolated from the benzene extract of Aniba simulans (Lauraceae) trunk wood, included the hitherto undescribed (2S, 3S, 5R)-5-allyl-5,7-dimethoxy-2-(3′,4′,5′-trimethoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2,3,5,6-tetra-hydro-6-oxobenzofuran, (2R,3S,5R) -5-allyl-5-methoxy-2-(3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-3-methy1-2,3,5, 6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran, (2S,3S)-6-O-allyl -5-methoxy-2-(3′-methoxy-4′-5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, (2R,3S)-6-O-allyl-5-methoxy-2- (3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran and 7-allyl-6-hydroxy-5-methoxy-2-(3′-methoxy-4,5′ -methylenedioxyphenyl)-3-methylbenzofuran.     

Dimeric hydroanthracenes from the unripe seeds of Cassia torosa

From the unripe seeds of Cassia torosa three new dimeric hydroanthracene derivatives were isolated along with stigmasterol, sitosterol, campesterol, physcion-9-anthrone, torosachyrsone and the phlegmacins A₂ and B₂. The structures of the new derivatives were established as physcion-10, 10′-bianthrone, anhydrophlegmacin B₂ [2-(6′-methoxy-3′-methyl-3′, 8′, 9′-trihydroxy-1′-oxo-1′, 2′, 3′, 4′-tetrahydroanthracene-10′-yl)-1, 8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6-methyl-9-oxo-9, 10-dihydroanthracene] and torosanin [2-(6′-methoxy-3′-methyl-3′, 8′,9′-trihydroxy-1′-oxo-1′, 2′, 3′,4′-tetrahydroanthracene-5′-yl)-1, 8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6-methyl-9-oxo-9, 10-dihydroanthracene], respectively.     

Tetronic acid and diarylpropanes from Iryanthera elliptica

The trunk wood of Iryanthera elliptica Ducke (Myristicaceae) contains, besides 2-(ω-piperonyltridecyl) -4-methylidenetetronic acid (iryelliptin), three biogenetically related compounds: (±)-7,4′-dihydroxy-3′-methoxyflavan, 1-(4′-hydroxy-2′-methoxyphenyl)- 3-(4″-hydroxy-3″-methoxyphenyl)-propane and spiro-[3-methoxy-2,5-cyclohexadien-1.1′-6′,7′- dihydroxy-5′-methoxy-1′,2′,3′,4′-tetrahydronaphthalen]-4-one-(spiroelliptin). Spiroelliptin rearranges upon methylation to 2,2′-trimethylene-3,4,5,4′,5′-penta-methoxybiphenyl.     

Neolignans from mezilaurus itauba

The wood bark of Mezilaurus itauba afforded in addition to seven known neolignans, three new compounds rel-(7R,8R,1′S,3′S)-Δ^5′,8′-5′-methoxy-3,4-methylenedioxy-1′,2′,3′,4′-tetrahydro-2′,4′-dioxo-7.3′,8.1′-neolignan, rel-(7S,8S,1′S, 2′S, 3′R, 4′S)-Δ^8′-2′,4′-dihydroxy-3,4-methylenedioxy-1′,2′,3′,4′,5′,6′-hexahydro-5′-oxo-7.3′,8.1′-neolignan and rel-(7S,8S)-Δ^8′-6′-hydroxy 5′-methoxy-3,4-methylenedioxy-7·O·2′,8.3′-neolignan. The latter compound has been detected previously in Aniba terminalis. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and comparison with related compounds.     

Isoflavones from Pterodon apparicioi

The trunk wood of Pterodon apparicioi contains five known compounds: 7-hydroxy-6,4′-dimethoxy-, 7-hydroxy-6-methoxy-3′,4′-methylenedioxy-, 6,7,2′,3′,4′-pentamethoxy-, 6,7,2′,4′,5′-pentamethoxy- and 6,7,2′-trimethoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyisoflavone. In addition, there are four new substances, namely 7,3′-dihydroxy-6,4′-dimethoxy-, 7-hydroxy-6,2′,4′,5′-tetramethoxy-, 7,2′-dimethoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxy- and 7,8,2′-trimethoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyisoflavone.     

Two new C-methylated flavonoids from Myrica gale

From the leaves of Myrica gale 2′,4′-dihydroxy-6′-methoxy-3′,5′-dimethylchalcone has been isolated. The fruits yielded 2′-hydroxy-4′,6′-dimethoxy-3′-methyldihydrochalcone. The constitutions were deduced from spectroscopic data and confirmed by synthesis.     

Synthesis of dihydrochalcones of Myrica gale

4,4,6-Trimethyl-2-(3-phenylpropionyl)cyclohexane-1,3,5-trione, 2′-hydroxy-4′,6′-dimethoxy-3′-methyldihydrochalcone, 2′,6′-dihydroxy-4′-methoxy-3′,5′-dimethyldihydrochalcone and 2,2,5-trimethyl-4(3-phenylpropionyl)cyclopent-4-ene-1,3-dione, constituents of Myrica gale, have been synthesized.     

Neolignans from the fruits of Licaria armeniaca

Fruits of Licaria armeniaca contain, besides eight known lignoids, three novel neolignans: (1S,5R,6S,7R,8R)-8-acetoxy-1-allyl-3,5-dimethoxy-7-methyl-6-(3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-4-oxobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-ene; (1S,5R,6S,7R)-1-allyl-3-methoxy-7-methyl-6-(3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-4,8-dioxobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-ene and (1S,5R,6S,7R)-1-allyl-3-methoxy-7-methyl-6-(3′,4′,5′-trimethoxyphenyl)-4,8-dioxobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-ene.     

Bicyclo[3,2,1]octanoid,neolignans from Aniba simulans

Six bicyclo[3,2,1]octanoid neolignans, isolated from the benzene extract of Aniba simulans Allen (Lauraceae) trunk wood, are shown to derive from two basic structures: 1-allyl-8-hydroxy-6-(3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-7-methyl-3-oxobicyclo[3,2,1]octane, substituted by 4-hydroxy, 4-hydroxy-5-methoxy, 4-methoxy or 4,5-dimethoxy groups; and 1-allyl-8-hydroxy-6-(3′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-7-methyl-4-oxobicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene, substituted by 3-hydroxy or 3-hydroxy-5-methoxy groups. The structural proposals are based on spectral data, interconversions synthesis of a derivative from the known (2R,3S,3aS)-3a-allyl-5-methoxy-2-(3′-methoxy,4′,5′-methylenedioxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran.     

7,2′,4′-Trihydroxy-3′-methoxyisoflavone from zollernia paraensis

Three further compounds have been isolated from Zollernia paraensis: 2,7-dihydroxy-4′-methoxy-3-phenylcoumarin, (±)-5,7-dihydroxy-2′,4′-dimethoxyisoflavanone and the new 7,2′,4′-trihydroxy-3′-methoxyisoflavone.     

Flavonoids from the ferns Blechnum regnellianum and Pityrogramma ebenea

From the leaves of the fern Pityrogramma ebenea a new compound 2′,6′-dihydroxy-4,3′-dimethoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxydihydrochalcone was characterized. (2S)-5,7-Dihydroxy-4′-methoxy-6,8-dimethylflavanone was identified in another fern, Blechnum regnellianum     

The neolignans (−)-carinatone and carinatin from Virola carinata

From the bark of Virola carinata two neolignans have been isolated: (?)-carcinatone, [(2S)-1-(3′,4′-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(3″-allyl-5″-methoxy-6″-hydroxyphenyl) propanone] and carinatin, [5-allyl-7-methoxy-3-methyl-2-(3′,4′-dimethoxyphenyl)benzofuran].     

Diarylpropanoids from Iryanthera polyneura

The trunk wood of Iryanthera polyneura Ducke (Myristicaceae) contains pinocembrin, 1-(2′,4′-dihydroxyphenyl)-3-(3″,4″-methylenedioxyphenyl)-propane, 1-(2′,4′-dihydroxy-3′-methylphenyl)-3-(2″-methoxy-4″, 5″-methylenedioxyphenyl)-propane and 4,2′,4′-trihydroxy-3-methoxydihydrochalcone.     

Astraciceran: a new isoflavan phytoalexin from Astragalus cicer

A new phytoalexin isolated from the fungus-inoculated leaflets of Astragalus cicer has been identified as 7-hydroxy-2′-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyisoflavan (astraciceran). The synthesis of astraciceran and its 3′,4′-methylenedioxy analogue is described.     

Flavonoids from the root-bark of Dioclea grandiflora

The systematic investigation of the root-bark of Dioclea grandiflora permitted the isolation of three new flavanones: agrandol (5,7-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-8-prenylflavanone), paraibanol (3,5,7,2′,5′-pentahydroxy-6-methoxyflavanone), and diosalol (3,5,7,2′,5′-pentahydroxy-6-methoxy-8-prenylflavanone). Also identified were β-amyrin and 5,7,2′,5′-tetrahydroxy-6-methoxy-8-prenylflavanone. All structural assignments were based solely on spectral data.     

Neolignans of Virola carinata bark

Four neolignans, dehydrodieugenol, its monomethylether, carinatone and carinatin have been isolated from the hexane fraction of the bark of Virola carinata. Three new neolignans were separated from the chloroform fraction and examined by spectroscopy and chemical reactions. Their structures were determined as (2S, 3S)-5-allyl- 7-methoxy-3-hydroxymethyl-2-(3′,4′-dimethoxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, (2S)- 1-(3′,4′-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(3″-allyl-5″-methoxy-6″-hydroxyphenyl)propanone(1) ol(3), (1S,2S)-1-(3′,4′-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(3″-allyl-5″-methoxy-6″-hydroxyphenyl) propanol(1) and called dihydrocarinatinol, carinatonol and carinatol, respectively.     

Flavonoids from the external leaf resins of four hemizonia species (asteraceae)

The external leaf resins of four Hemizonia species afforded nine methylated flavonoids, including flavanones, flavones and flavonols. Besides the rare compounds 7-methyleriodictyol and 3,6,8-trimethoxy-5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxyflavone the new 6-methoxy-5,7,8,3′,4′-pentahydroxyflavone was isolated and identified by spectroscopic means.     

Neolignans from Nectandra miranda

Seven neolignans, isolated from a C₆H₆ extract of Nectandra miranda (Lauraceae) trunk wood, included the hitherto undescribed (2S, 3S, 3aS)- and (2S, 3S, 3aR)-5-allyl-3a-methoxy-2-(3′, 4′, 5′-trimethoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-2, 3, 3a, 6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofurans (respectively mirandin-A and mirandin -B), 7-allyl-6-hydroxy-5-methoxy-2-(3′, 4′, 5′-trimethoxyphenyl)-3-methylbenzofuran and (2R, 3R)-7-methoxy-2-(3′, 4′, 5′-trimethoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-5 -(E)-propenyl-2, 3-dihydrobenzofuran (licarin C).     

Two new dihydrochalcones from Myrica gale

From the fruits of Myrica gale the isolation of 2′,6′dihydroxy-4′-methoxy-3′,5′-dimethyldihydrochalcone and 4,4,6-trimethyl-2-(3-phenylpropionyl)-cyclohexane-1,3,5-trione is described. The constitutions have been deduced from spectroscopic data and confirmed by synthesis.
