Guaianolides from the leaves of Centaurea incana

Six guaianolides have been isolated from the aerial parts of Centaurea incana from Algeria. They were identified as desoxyrepin, repin or subluteolide, repin monochlorhydrin, acroptilin, janerin and repdiolide triol.

Benzofuran derivatives from enceliopsis argophylla

From the composite Enceliopsis argophylla several new benzofuran derivatives were isolated. The unusual structure of the skeleton comprises an isopropylidene group at C-2 and a keto function at C-3 of the furan ring. An organ specific analysis by HPLC showed the compounds being present in leaves, peduncles, bracts, ray and disc flowers. The absolute amounts, however, differed greatly being highest in leaves and bracts.

Oxygenated nerolidol derivatives from Artemisia alba

From the aerial parts of Artemisia alba of Calabrian origin, five oxygenated nerolidol derivatives were isolated, two of them bearing hydroperoxyl groups. Structures were elucidated by spectral data and chemical reactions. Acetylation of the major hydroperoxyl constituent afforded a tris-nor aldehydic derivative as a result of loss of acetone from an unstable intermediate perester. An internally consistent set of ¹³C NMR assignments for the natural products and some derivatives is presented.     

Ent-labdane derivatives from gutierrezia grandis

Two new diterpenes, 3α-angeloyloxy-18-hydroxy-13-furyl-ent-labda-8(17)-ene and 3α-hydroxy-18-angeloyloxy- 13-furyl-ent-labda-8(17)-ene and an only recently reported third diterpene, 3α, 18-dihydroxy-13-furyl-ent-labda-8(17)-ene, were isolated from the leaves of Gutierrezia grandis. Their structures were determined by mass spectral, IR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR data was well as chemical evidence.     

Isoalantolactone derivatives and germacranolides from Blumea densiflora

The germacranolides tagitinin A and tirotundin ethyl ether and a series of new ring A-hydroxylated isoalantolactone derivatives were isolated from Blumea densiflora. Structures were established by spectroscopic methods and chemical transformations.

The chemical investigation of Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus afforded, in addition to known bisabolene derivatives, elemicin and p-hydroxyacetophenone, two new diterpene acids. Their structures were determined, by spectroscopic methods and some chemical transformations, as ent-labd-8(17),13E-dien-15-ol-18-oic acid (viscidic acid A) and ent-labd-8(17),13E-dien-15-acetoxy-18-oic acid (visidic acid B).     

Pseudoguaianolides carabrone derivatives from Loxothysanus sinuatus

The aerial parts of Loxothysanus sinuatus afforded in addition to known compounds nine new pseudoguaianolides, three guaianolides and five carabrone derivatives. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The chemotaxonomy is discussed briefly. The configurations of two guaianolides were corrected.

An unusual m-hydroxyacetophenone and three new chromanone derivatives from Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus

An unusual m-hydroxyacetophenone, named viscidone, and three new chroman-4-one derivatives were isolated from Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus ssp. lanceolatus, which also contained a known p-hydroxyacetophenone derivative. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic (¹H and ¹³C NMR, UV, IR and MS) and chemical means.     

Bisabolene derivatives and acetylenic compounds from peruvian Coreopsis species

The investigation of three Peruvian Coreopsis species afforded, in addition to compounds isolated previously from this genus, two new tetraynenes and five sesquiterpenes all related to perezone, including a tricyclic ketone with a cedrane skeleton closely related to pipitzol. The structure were elucidated by spectroscopic methods.     

Tetrachyrin,a new rearranged kaurenoid lactone,and diterpene acids from Tetrachyron orizabaensis and Helianthus debilis

(?)-Kaur-16-en-19-oic acid and tetrachyrin, a new rearranged kaurenoid lactone, were isolated from Tetrachyron orizabaensis var. websteri and Helianthus debilis ssp. debilis. The latter species also afforded angeloylgrandifloric acid.     

The intracellular distribution of tocopherols in Calendula officinalis leaves

From Calendula officinalis leaves, five cellular subtractions (chloroplasts, mitochondria, Golgi membranes, microsomes and cytosol) were obtained and their purity was checked. The contents of α-,γ- and δ-tocopherols were determined in these fractions. There were no tocopherols in Golgi membranes and cytosol. γ-Tocopherol and δ-tocopherol were found in the chloroplasts, mitochondria and microsomes, whereas α-tocopherol was present only in the chloroplasts.     

Polyacetylenes from Chrysanthemum leucanthemum

Fifteen acetylenic compounds have been isolated and characterized from the flower heads of Chrysanthemum leucanthemum L. Five of these acetylenes have not previously been published as naturally occurring compounds. These are: 1,7(c)-hexadecadien-10,12,14-triyne; 1,8(c)-heptadecadien-11,13,15-triyne; 4(c)-tridecen-7,9,11-triyn-l-ol; 1,8(t)-hexadecadien-10,12,14-triyn-(6·7)-oxirane; and [3(t),5(t)-tridecadien-7,9,11-triyn-l-yl]-3-methyl-2-butenoate. The first three compounds are interesting since they are important intermediates in previously postulated biogenetic pathways. Ten acetylenes have been identified from the roots of the same plant, all of these having different structures from those of the flower heads. One of the acetylenes, [3(t), 5(t)-tridecadien-7,9,11-triyn-l-yl]-3-methylbutyrate, from the roots has never been reported as a naturally occurring compound.
