Proximate Mechanisms of Sexual Selection in the Firefly Photinus pyralis (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Male competition in courtships of the firefly Photinus pyralis is intense. Morphometric analysis revealed that male size is variable, possibly exhibiting alternative body plans. We examined the outcomes of courtships to determine the proximate mechanisms of selection that may have led to male allometry. Two distinct selective events exist within mate competition: (1) searching and (2) scramble competition. Although many courtships failed, those without rivals were shorter and successful males spent less time in the mate-guarding position than when several males were in competition. Winners outflashed rivals, but flash dialogs occurred at similar frequencies across rival densities, indicating that females require some quantum of information before mating. Female flash preference was examined in choice tests to evaluate female discrimination ability. Females preferred flashes of greater intensity and precedence. This suggests that flash synchronization is a competitive display rather than a cooperative behavior to maintain female responsiveness. Selection for male size was density dependent: females preferred large males in searching, while small males were favored in scrambles. Simulated scrambles showed that small males have superior locomotor abilities, allowing them to reach the female rapidly. Comparison with a species lacking scrambles, P. macdermotti, revealed that selection in P. pyralis is disruptive, targeting traits alternately, and may have led to the evolution of higher allometric ratios in a species with direct male competition. In nicrophorine beetles, genus Nicrophorus care their larva using small vertebrate carrion, whereas genus Ptomaucopusreproduce with small vertebrate carrion but show no parental care. Aggression and sexual behavior were examined in Ptomascopus morio and Nicrophorus quadripunctatus. Nicrophorus quadripunctatus had intense female–female as well as male–male contests. In Ptomascopus morio, by contrast, female–female aggression was rarely observed. Male–male aggression (pushing, biting, male–male mounting) in Ptomascopus morio was observed when a resource for breeding was present, whether or not a female was present. The lack of female–female aggression, and male–male aggression when resources but not females are present, suggest that the mating system of Ptomascopus morio is resource defense polygyny. Large males of Ptomascopus morio were also found to exhibit mate choice, preferring large females over small females. 相似文献

Sexual behavior by infecundable females, and by same-sex and adult-immature dyads, occurs in wild and captive bonobos (Pan paniscus). Proposed functions of these behaviors, in social primates generally, include practice, paternity confusion, exchange, and communication as well as appeasement. We used this framework to interpret and to compare observations of sexual behavior in a captive bonobo group and a wild white-faced capuchin (Cebus capucinus) group. In both species, (a) sexual behavior was no more frequent in cycling females than in pregnant or lactating females and (b) same-sex and adult-immature dyads engaged in as much mounting or genitogenital contact as adult heterosexual dyads did. The species differed in that (a) bonobos engaged in sexual behavior 65 times as frequently as capuchins, (b) only bonobos engaged in sexual contact other than ventrodorsal mounting during focal observation, and (c) bonobo sexual contact was concentrated most heavily in socially tense situations in adult female–female dyads, whereas capuchin sexual contact was concentrated most heavily in socially tense situations in adult male–male dyads. These data and published literature indicate that (a) practice sex occurs in both species, (b) paternity confusion may be a current function of C. capucinus nonconceptive sex, (c) exchange sex remains undemonstrated in capuchins, and (d) communication sex is more important to members of the transferring sex—female bonobos and male capuchins—than to members of the philopatric sex. 相似文献

Fopius arisanus is unusual among hymenopterous parasitoids in males having an obligatory premating period. We confirmed Hagen's (1953) view that sperm takes several days to migrate from the testes to the seminal vesicles. Males mated for the first time only 4 days after emergence, the time that sperm was first ever recorded in the seminal vesicles. In the field, we studied the sexual maturation of F. arisanus males in relation to their behavior. In general, sexually immature males were found in male-only swarms that persisted over several days in host tree canopies. Mature males were usually found in loose aggregations in the vegetation beneath host trees. Females entered these loose aggregations and were mated, whereas they were generally absent from swarms in the canopy. Swarming is therefore apparently not a primary component of the sexual communication system of the species. We describe, for the first time in F. arisanus, the behavioral sequence that accompanies the intersexual communication that leads to mating. Males probably release a volatile chemical that attracts females from a distance, but we have only circumstantial evidence for this. We also postulate that males may form aggregations to amplify the effects of this distance attractant. In the vicinity of males, females release a pheromone that attracts males, a process we demonstrated with female-baited sticky traps. 相似文献

I studied sexual behavior of immature bonobos (Pan paniscus) in a wild group living at Wamba, Zaire, with special reference to its development. Even immature individuals under 1 year old performed sexual behavior. Sexual behavior occurred in almost all age–sex combinations, except between immature and mature females. Based on analyses of behavioral pattern and context, I classified sexual behavior involving immature individuals into three categories. (1) Genital contact between immature individuals was observed during play, and was performed by males more frequently than by females. This sexual behavior shared many traits with that of other great apes. (2) Copulation-like genital contact was observed between immature males and mature females. Its frequency increased with the immature male's age; it developed into copulation in adulthood. (3) Genital contact used to regulate interindividual relationships. This behavior, which is unique to bonobos, was absent among infants. It developed between late juvenile and early adolescent periods in association with changes in social circumstances. 相似文献

Meloid beetles are well characterised by both morphological and biological features. Previous phylogenetic hypotheses based on morphological characters assumed the repeated parallel evolution of complex biological novelties. In this work relationships among several taxa of the four subfamilies and almost all tribes representing meloid diversity are examined by using mitochondrial (16S) and nuclear (ITS2) DNA sequences, in 25 genera (using Anthicidae as outgroup). Secondary structure of 16S and ITS2 rRNAs were modelled. ITS2 structure represents a synapomorphic condition for the family and informative characters at the tribal level. Phylogenetic hypotheses based on separate and combined analysis of the 16S and ITS2 rDNA sequences, and morpho-biological characters were tested, and compared with previous morphological classifications. Molecular dating allowed an outline of the main steps of the evolutionary history of Meloidae, which evolved during Early Cretaceous and then radiated considerably with the adoption of hypermetaboly and parasitic behaviour, and with repeated, parallel evolution of larval phoresy on its hosts. 相似文献

The use of deuterium-labelled cantharidin (CAN-D(2)) to study details of cantharidin transfer in blister beetles indicates that the dynamics of organ-selective cantharidin accumulation may differ over time. Although the accessory glands absorb a high amount of CAN-D(2) in the short term, they ultimately accumulate less than the testes. Confirming previous studies, the last steps in the pathway of biosynthesis of cantharidin occur in the male's body distantly from the reproductive system but the ultimate product, cantharidin, is transported into the male reproductive tract via the membrane of the accessory glands. From there it first transfers preferentially to the epididimis and the vas deferens, followed by final deposition in the testes. Most, if not all, of the cantharidin passes internally within the sexual organs; hemolymph transport is not involved. In female meloids, cantharidin enters the genitalia from the male as a nuptial gift. High amounts are first absorbed by the spermatophoral receptacle followed by spreading through the ovaries and an ultimate accumulation in the eggs. The amount taken up by the ovaries remains considerably lower than that of the receptacle. Over time these two organs stop accumulating cantharidin, while the bursa copulatrix starts to incorporate the gift actively. The accumulated amount taken up by bursa is mainly supplied by the receptacle and ovaries suggesting that an internal transfer of cantharidin is used in females as the main transport route. 相似文献

species or subspecies of the rodent genus Mus and two outgroup species were compared. Intron sequences from a gene in the nonrecombining region of the Y chromosome Jarid1d (Smcy) and its X chromosomal gametolog, Jarid1c (Smcx), were analyzed in a phylogenetic context. The male-to-female mutation rate ratio for all thirteen taxa is approximately
2.5, which is similar to previous estimates in more distantly related rodents. However, when branches with lengths of more
than 2.5% were removed from the analysis, the male-to-female mutation rate ratio dropped to 0.9. Thus, in closely related
rodents, as in closely related primates, the male-to-female mutation rate ratio is lower than expected.

A comparative study of the functional response ofColeomegilla maculataDeGeer (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) fourth instars was conducted under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions. In the laboratory, individual larvae were placed in 9-cm petri dishes for 24 h, with 1, 3, 5, or 7 Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata[Say]) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) egg masses. Each egg mass was standardized at 15 eggs. In the greenhouse and field,C. maculatalarvae were provided with an equivalent of 0.5 to 35L. decemlineataegg masses/m2of potato leaf. Fourth instars ofC. maculataexhibited a type II functional response toL. decemlineataeggs under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions. Predator search efficiency was inversely related with prey density. The maximum mean attack rate (8.7 eggs) byC. maculatalarvae in the field was about half the mean attack rate in the laboratory (17.6 eggs) and greenhouse (20.1 eggs). The difference in prey density between the laboratory and field seems to have been a major contributing factor in determining the rate of predation, whereas differences in environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and possible alternate food) may explain the differences observed in the predation rate in the greenhouse and field. 相似文献

Sexual behavior between males and females, as well as between males, is described and discussed for the cerambycid beetlePhytoecia rufiventris. The beetles' taxis toward plants taller than average height brings the sexes together from a distance. A male may mount another individual (male or female) and attempt copulation without sex discrimination. The male can discern the sex of another individual only when the terminal part of his abdomen touches the ventral surface of the fifth visible sternite of the latter. No evidence of a sex pheromone is found in this species. Within 1.5–5.5 cm the substrateborne vibrations produced by a moving individual may be the important factor which elicits males to approach a moving individual and attempt copulation. If a female is receptive when a male touches her, he can copulate with her without any courtship display. However, if the female runs away and appears unreceptive, the male will perform courtship displays. Copulation is usually terminated by males. Homosexual behavior between males is discussed. 相似文献

Clerid beetles are common natural enemies of bark beetles, and could potentially be used as biological control agents if they could be reared in sufficient numbers. We developed an artificial diet devoid of insect components for rearing Thanasimus dubius (Fabricius), a clerid that attacks several economically important bark beetles in eastern North America. We reared larvae of this predator using the artificial diet, and then used either natural or factitious prey to feed the adults so produced. Two different methods of presenting the diet were also examined. We then compared the performance of T. dubius reared on the artificial diet with newly-emerged wild individuals collected from the field. Our results suggest that adult predators reared on the diet are near in quality to wild ones, and high R0 values can be obtained. No difference in prey preference was found between wild and diet-reared individuals after five generations in the laboratory. Sufficient numbers of predators could be generated using these techniques to permit limited field trials of augmentative biological control. 相似文献

The mating behavior of the cave pseudoscorpion Maxchernes iporangae Mahnert & Andrade, 1998 (Chernetidae), was studied under laboratory conditions. A total of 24 pairings was observed. Mating was divided into three phases: predeposition (dance), spermatophore deposition and transfer, and posttransfer phase. The mean mating duration was 67.3 min based on 10 observations. Spermatophore morphology is described and consists of a stalk, a drop of fluid, and an -shaped sperm package. Males and females can mate several times in the same reproductive period. Males of sexually cannibalistic species are thought to express behaviors that reduce the risk of being killed by the females. In several spider species the male modulates his approach to the female as a function of her feeding behavior. We tested this hypothesis in the preying mantid Mantis religiosa (L.). Males were placed behind perching females in a laboratory arena and their position was video-recorded. Females were presented with a prey item (prey-presentation period) and then either they were allowed to capture and eat the prey (“P” treatment), or the prey was removed before the female could capture it (“NP” treatment). For the next 10 min (between-prey-presentation period) the females ate the prey (P), or perched without moving (NP). Total speed of approach of males was over 6-times higher in the P treatment (2.3 cm/min) than in the NP treatment (0.4 cm/min). Speed in the prey-presentation period was higher in P than in NP (4.4 cm/min and 1.3 cm/min, respectively), which shows that seeing a female striking and/or grasping the prey in itself stimulated faster male approach. Approach speed in the between-prey presentation period was also higher in P than in NP (1.9 cm/min and 0.2 cm/min, respectively), which indicates that seeing a female feeding on the prey and/or cleaning her forelegs also stimulates male approach. We conclude that males of M. religiosa can assess the activity state of the females and respond to this information by modulating their speed of approach, probably reducing the risk of being detected and possibly cannibalized. 相似文献

A new population of blind, cave dwelling tetra fish of the genus Astyanax was discovered in Granadas Cave, in the Balsas drainage, southern México. All blind Mexican tetras previously described are from Tampico and San Luis Potosí, northern México. The discovery of a new blind morph thus represents an independent colonization and convergent adaptation to the cave environment by this fish. Individuals of this population display variability of their troglomorphic features. Some individuals presented asymmetrical degeneration of the eyes, where one was normal, but the other somewhat reduced in size and complexity. Loss of pigmentation and eye reduction, although sometimes correlated, were not always linked; reduced eyes were found on pigmented fish and unpigmented fish often possessed normal eyes. Some individuals had reduced lens size or an absence of lens altogether. Retina is highly modified with photoreceptors sometimes absent. Eye reduction was correlated with a diminished size of the optic lobes and an increase of the prosencephalon. Modifications of the skull involve closing in of the circumorbital series of bones. Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) have been used previously as a model to explore the effect of nutrition on male reproduction. Here we tested the hypothesis that adult feeding history influences male sexual performance in four species of neotropical fruit flies of the genus Anastrepha (A. ludens, A. obliqua, A. serpentina, and A. striata), an approach that allowed us to consider species-specific ecological factors independent of phylogenetic constraints. We fed, from the moment of emergence, four experimental groups of males of each species with either (1) dry sucrose, (2) a mixture of dry sucrose and hydrolyzed protein (enzymatic yeast hydrolyzate), (3) a mixture of dry sucrose and bird feces, or (4) an open fruit [Citrus sinensis (orange), Mangifera indica (mango), Manilkara zapota (chico zapote), and Psidium guajava (guava) for A. ludens, A. obliqua, A. serpentina, and A. striata, respectively]. Cohorts of 12-day-old individuals (28 males [7 of each diet treatment] and 14 females) were released simultaneously into species-specific field cages and the following parameters recorded over a 4-day period (procedure repeated with five different cohorts for each species): number of males involved in calling activities every hour (i.e., pheromone emissions, wing fanning, wing motions, or extensions of the mouthparts), identity of copulating males, and copula duration. In the case of A. obliqua, we also observed separately cohorts of 20-day-old individuals. In A. obliqua, A. serpentina, and A. striata, males fed on a protein-supplemented diet had higher copulatory success when competing against males fed on other diets. Anastrepha serpentina and A. striata were sensitive to diet on all but two of the parameters analyzed (i.e., males with consecutive copulas and copula duration in the case of A. serpentina and males with multiple and consecutive copulas in the case of A. striata). In sharp contrast to this, the male mating performance of A. ludens was not affected by diet. Anastrepha obliqua was sensitive to different parameters depending on age. We discuss our findings and their sexual selection implications in light of each species' habits. 相似文献

Stage specific functional response of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) to varying densities of Aphis gossypii Glover was examined in a simplified cucumber leaf arena under laboratory conditions. All stages of H. axyridis were isolated individually for 24 h with different prey densities at 25 °C and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. The number of prey consumed by the predator was checked at 3, 6, 12, and 24 h. All stages of H. axyridis showed a Type II functional response. Based on the random predator equation, estimated attack rates of H. axyridis at 24 h were 0.0037, 0.0442, 0.3590, 0.3228, and 0.1456, and estimated handling times were 4.1001, 2.4575, 0.7500, 0.2132, and 0.1708 h for the first, second, third, and fourth instars, and female adult, respectively. 相似文献

Biology of Lilioceris spp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and their parasitoids in Europe 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The biology and parasitoid complex of the lily leaf beetle (LLB), Lilioceris lilii Scopoli, and two congeneric species were investigated in Europe, as part of a biological control program against the LLB in North America. Eggs, larvae, and adults of L. lilii were collected in several countries in Europe, on both cultivated and wild Lilium spp., and reared in the laboratory and under natural conditions. Parasitoids were obtained and their biologies were studied. Similar investigations were made in Switzerland on two closely related species Lilioceris tibialis (Villa) found on wild Lilium spp., and Lilioceris merdigera (L.) on several other Liliaceae. The three species are strictly univoltine. Adults overwinter and lay eggs on leaves in early spring. The three beetle species have four instars, which were characterized by their head capsule width. Pupation occurs in a cocoon in the soil. Adults emerge in late summer and start feeding before reaching overwintering sites. Egg and larval parasitoids were obtained. Eggs of L. lilii and L. merdigera were parasitized by the mymarid Anaphes sp., a multivoltine species that needs alternate hosts for overwintering. Larvae were heavily attacked by several parasitoids, among which the most abundant were three ichneumonids, Lemophagus pulcher (Szepligeti), L. errabundus (Gravenhorst), and Diaparsis jucunda (Holmgren), and the eulophid Tetrastichus setifer Thomson. All four parasitoid species were found in the three beetles and in most European regions, but strong variations were observed in their relative abundance among hosts and geographic regions. Three of the four main larval parasitoids are strictly univoltine, whereas L. pulcher has a partial second generation. Lemophagus spp. are frequently parasitized by the ichneumonid hyperparasitoid Mesochorus lilioceriphilus Schwenke. Further details of the biology of the parasitoids are described, and their potential as biological control agents is discussed. 相似文献
