Mating system of the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Previous studies on parental and spacing behavior of Microtuspennsylvanicus suggest a promiscuous mating system, but attemptsto find multiple paternity in single litters have been unsuccessful. In this paper we present evidence of multiple paternity in singlelitters conceived in the wild early in the breeding season. The proportion of litters sired by multiple males was estimated,by a conservative method, to be 33.1%.We argue that the presenceof promiscuity, rather than polygyny, in M. pennsylvanicus isthe result of two factors. First, overwintered breeding malesare similar in age and size, resulting in small variation incompetitive ability among males. This reduced variation in competitiveability reduces the possibility that some males defend severalfemales and others defend none. Second, the habitat structureof the meadow vole makes it difficult for a male to detect othermales nearby, and this reduces the possibility that one maleexcludes others from mating when a female comes into estrus. 相似文献

1. From 1981 to 1986, 6120 meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were sampled for hematological indices in southeastern Manitoba, Canada. This survey revealed the sporadic occurrence of anemia in early winter at mean temperatures below about -5 degrees C. 2. Anemia was associated with leukocytosis and circulating normoblasts, suggesting a sudden, large blood loss. Individuals became anemic quickly, with no obvious predisposing factors. 3. Attempts were made to induce anemia by exposing voles in traps to various temperatures. Temperatures characteristic of most trapping sessions failed to induce anemia in both wild and laboratory-born voles. 4. Short-term exposure to more extreme temperatures (-20 to -30 degrees C) induced anemia. Voles lost blood through erosions of the epithelium of the glandular stomach, and developed other pathological lesions characteristic of hypothermia. 5. Although there was a strong association between cold weather and anemia, we could find no clear relationship between winter survival and winter weather. However, in 1984, extraordinarily cold temperatures were associated with anemia and a subsequent population decline. These events suggest a threshold mean daily temperature of about -15 degrees C, below which vole survival is grossly affected. 6. Deteriorating protein levels and energy reserves of small mammals in winter may make them particularly susceptible to cold stress. Hence, sporadic bouts of sustained cold may be responsible for some of the enigmatic winter declines seen in northern small mammals. 相似文献

Mass and gross composition of white and brown adipose tissues and of skeletal muscle were determined for C. gapperi and for M. pennsylvanicus from monthly samples of a 1-year period. Amounts of brown fat increased throughout autumn to a maximum in late winter and then declined to a minimum in the spring. Gross composition remained relatively constant throughout the year. Changes in white fat showed a trend similar to changes in brown fat. Relatively low mean values for muscle mass during summer were due to a change in the age structure of the vole population. 相似文献

Summary This study examines the hypothesis that mammalian species with wide fluctuations in population size will have greater metabolic rates than species with smaller population fluctuations. We tested this hypothesis using two microtine rodents — the beach vole (Microtus breweri) and the meadow vole (M. pennsylvanicus). Although these species experience similar climatic regimes, eat similar foods, and have a very close phylogenetic relationship, they show marked differences in demography. Microtus pennsylvanicus is prone to large supraannual fluctuations in population size, while M. breweri is essentially acyclical. Metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) of each species was measured using open-flow respirometry at ambient temperatures ranging from 2 to 34° C. Basal metabolic rate of M. pennsylvanicus (1.81 ml O2 g–1 h–1) was significantly greater than that of M. breweri (1.39 ml O2 g–1 h–1). The lower critical temperature, estimated by continuous two-phase regression, was 28.9° C for M. pennsylvanicus and 29.8° C for M. breweri. Regression lines below thermoneutrality did not differ in slope, but the elevation for M. pennsylvanicus was significantly higher. Thus, M. pennsylvanicus has a higher metabolic rate at all temperatures examined. These results support the hypothesis that metabolic rate is positively correlated with the extent of population fluctuation. We suggest that further evidence for, or against, this hypothesis should be found by comparing closely matched species pairs, rather than resorting to confounded allometric comparisons of ecologically and phylogenetically diverse taxa. 相似文献

The influence of daylength on body mass and food intake of pregnant and lactating voles was tested by comparing animals housed in long versus short daylengths. Pregnancy rates were approximately 50% in long-day females and in voles kept in short days beginning 2 weeks before mating, but were significantly lower in voles preadapted to short days for 8 weeks before mating. Body mass and food intake increased substantially during pregnancy and lactation and the magnitude of the increase was unaffected by daylength; by contrast, body weight was significantly reduced in non-impregnated voles kept in short as compared to long days. The suppressive effects of short photoperiods on body weight were completely counteracted during pregnancy and lactation. Voles that breed during the short days of winter face extreme energetic challenges but the advantages of early breeding appear to justify the costs. 相似文献

The meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus , is the most widely distributed Microtus species in North America. Across its range, it shows marked demographic differences, experiences a large range of climatic conditions, and varies considerably in body size and life-history characteristics. To study the genetic basis of the geographic variation in size and life history of this species, we subjected three populations, one from central Canada and two from eastern Canada, to quantitative genetic analysis in the lab. We studied the variance and covariance of several size and growth variables as well as age and size at maturity by means of population crosses, full-sib analysis, and parent-offspring regressions. We found that the phenotypic differences among these populations are almost entirely due to environmental effects. However, within populations, additive genetic and maternal effects explain most of the variation. We discuss possible explanations for the lack of genetic differences among the populations and speculate that a similar reaction norm is maintained in all populations through heterogeneity in the temporal or spatial environment that the populations experience. The heterogeneity may be mediated through population density fluctuations, climatic variation, or variation in site productivity. Thus, we hypothesize that M. pennsylvanicus has evolved to be the best in all possible worlds rather than in one actual world. This study highlights the crucial importance of maternal and environmental effects on the size, growth, and life history of small rodents. 相似文献

Three patterns of mitochondrial DNA nucleotide divergence in the meadow vole,Microtus pennsylvanicus

Summary The DNA sequence was determined for the cytochrome c oxidase II (COII), tRNALys, and ATPase 8 genes from the mitochondrial genome of the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. When compared to other rodents, three different patterns of evolutionary divergence were found. Nucleotide variation in tRNALys is concentrated in the TC loop. Nucleotide variation in the COII gene in three genera of rodents (Microtus, Mus, Rattus) consists predominantly of transitions in the third base positions of codons. The predicted amino acid sequence in highly conserved (>92% similarity). Analysis of the ATPase 8 gene among four genera (Microtus, Cricetulus, Mus, Rattus) revealed more detectable transversions than transitions, many fixed first and second position mutations, and considerable amino acid divergence. The rate of nucleotide substitution at nonsynonymous sites in the ATPase 8 gene is 10 times the rate in the COII gene. In contrast, the estimated absolute mutation rate as determined by analysis of nucleotide substitutions at fourfold degenerate sites probably is the same for the two genes. The primary sequences of the ATPase 8 and COII peptides are constrained differently, but each peptide is conserved in terms of predicted secondary-level configuration. 相似文献

1. The effect of fasting on respiratory quotient (RQ), metabolic rate, blood glucose, liver glycogen, carcass lipids, interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT), and body temperature was investigated in Microtus pennsylvanicus. 2. The utilization of carbohydrates during fasting leads to a severe hypoglycemia within 6 hr. 3. The hypoglycemia does not seem to stem from the inability to mobilize glycogen or fat reserves. 4. The hypoglycemic state may be responsible for the decreased SMR and body temperature. 5. The predominant use of carbohydrates may stem from a high metabolic rate coupled with a low calorie diet which forces the voles to feed frequently. 相似文献

Inheritance of dilute coat color with pink eye in the Japanese field vole (Microtus montebelli) was investigated by mating of the dilute mutant with a normal agouti vole and a white vole. As the results, it was cleared that an autosomal recessive gene p is responsible for the pink-eyed dilution in M. montebelli. 相似文献

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) has been implicated as a modulator of social behavior, often in a species-specific manner. Comparative studies of closely related vole species are particularly useful for identifying neural systems involved in social behaviors in both voles and humans. In the present study, immunohistochemistry was performed to compare NPY-like immunoreactivity (-ir) in brain tissue of the socially monogamous prairie vole and non-monogamous meadow vole. Species differences in NPY-ir were observed in a number of regions including the cortex, extended amygdala, septal area, suprachiasmatic nucleus, and intergeniculate leaf. Meadow voles had higher NPY-ir in all these regions as compared to prairie voles. No differences were observed in the striatum or hippocampus. The extended amygdala and lateral septum are regions that play a key role in regulation of monogamous behaviors such as pair bonding and paternal care. The present study suggests NPY in these regions may be an additional modulator of these species-specific social behaviors. Meadow voles had moderately higher NPY-ir in a number of hypothalamic regions, especially in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Meadow voles also had much higher levels of NPY-ir in the intergeniculate leaflet, another key region in the regulation of circadian rhythms. Overall, species differences in NPY-ir were observed in a number of brain regions implicated in emotion, stress, circadian, and social behaviors. These findings provide additional support for a role for the NPY system in species-typical social behaviors. 相似文献

Paternal care in microtines has been studied infrequently and few studies have compared patterns of direct and indirect paternal investment. The paternal behaviour of three vole species, the meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), the pine vole (M. pinetorum) and the prairie vole (M. ochrogaster) was examined in a semi-natural setting. Prairie and pine voles were found to exhibit high levels of paternal care. Prairie vole males contributed the most direct care by remaining in the natal nest for long periods of time in contact with the pups. Pine voles contributed less direct care than prairie voles as they spent less time in the natal nest with their offspring. In addition, both prairie and pine vole males were observed to groom their pups and retrieve them back to the nest area. Prairie vole males also engaged in such indirect forms of care as nest construction and maintenance, while pine voles provided indirect care in the form of tunnel construction and food caching. Meadow vole males were the least paternal of the three species and rarely engaged in either direct or indirect care. These findings support predictions that M. pennsylvanicus is promiscuous and that male and female meadow voles occupy separate territories. They are also consistent with studies which indicate that prairie and pine voles are monogamous and have a structured social organization with members interacting closely with one another. 相似文献

Summary Field evidence indicates that adult microtines, especially females, may be a major cause of poor juvenile survival and this may be instrumental in their population regulation. This suggests that males and females behave differently towards young animals. To examine how adult males, nonlactating females, and lactating females behave towards strange young, I introduced young animals into the home cage of the adults. Lactating females were most aggressive towards young; most males investigated them; most nonlactating females ignored them. However, discriminant function analysis indicated a great deal of overlap in the behavior of the classes. None of the classes behaved differently towards young of either sex. Females did not vary their behavior during lactation. Behavior varied among lactating females, with 55% showing little aggression and 20% showing a great deal. Most lactating females showed similar behavior in each of their bouts: docile females remained docile, aggressive females remained aggressive. I conclude that lactating females are most aggressive towards strange young. These results are consistent with the field evidence, which suggests that adult females depress juvenile survival and recruitment and that the main culprits are breeding females. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the optimum simple, constant photoperiod for voles in a laboratory colony. Voles from an established colony maintained at 22 degrees C with a photoperiod of 14:10 hours of light:dark were transferred at 50 days of age to a photoperiod of 12:12, 14:10, 16:8 or 18:6 hours of light:dark. From Day 96 to Day 102, the 9--10 females per treatment group were paired with a male. Body and gonadal weights, spermatogenesis, ovarian activity and pregnancy were evaluated on Day 110. Reproductive function and body weight of both male and female voles maintained on a photoperiod of 16:8 exceeded (p less than 0.05) values for voles exposed to 12:12 hours of light:dark and tended to be more favorable than for voles in the 14:10 and 18:6 groups. 相似文献
