Dolphin interactions with coastal fisheries are of major concern, reportedly leading to gear damage, which increases the cost of coastal fishing globally and in the Mediterranean Sea. The aim of this study was to determine the effect that gear, target species, mesh size, depth, soaking duration, fishing area, and season have on net depredation frequency and to offer insights on possible mitigation solutions. From November 2013 to February 2016 we monitored 107 active coastal fishers in 22 ports of the northern Aegean Sea coastline, identified the main target species of the fishery and recorded the damages on gill nets and trammel nets caused by dolphins, mainly the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Quasi-binomial generalized linear models were used to determine the relationship between the examined factors and depredation frequency. The analysis revealed that the gears mostly depredated were gill nets and trammel nets with small mesh sizes, mainly targeting surmullet (Mullus surmuletus), red mullet (Mullus barbatus), common sole (Solea solea), European hake (Merluccius merluccius), and caramote prawn (Melicertus kerathurus). The probability of depredation was also significantly dependent on the fishing area.  相似文献

Growth and light interception were measured in field beans (Vicia faba) infected by Ascochyta fabae under field conditions. Despite late infection, disease reduced the leaf area index and the dry matter production of the crop. The main effect was due to a decrease of leaf area duration, which resulted in shorter duration of growth and lower final dry weights. The reduction in seed yield was significant, representing a decrease of 15% compared with a prophylactic fungicide treatment. The data are consistent with a small reduction in light use efficiency, but the observed differences were not significant during the period of crop growth.  相似文献

Summary Two big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) were trained to report the presence or absence of a virtual sonar target. The bats' sensitivity to transient masking was investigated by adding 5 ms pulses of white noise delayed from 0 to 16 ms relative to the target echo. When signal and masker occurred simultaneously, the bats required a signal energy to noise spectrum level ratio of 35 dB for 50% probability of detection. When the masker was delayed by 2 ms or more there was no significant masking and echo energy could be reduced by 30 dB for the same probability of detection. The average duration of the most energetic sonar signal of each trial was measured to be 1.7 ms and 2.4 ms for the two bats, but a simple relation between detection performance and pulse duration was not found.In a different experiment the masking noise pulses coincided with the echo, and the duration of the masker was varied from 2 to 37.5 ms. The duration of the masker had little or no effect on the probability of detection.The findings are consistent with an aural integration time constant of about 2 ms, which is comparable to the duration of the cries. This is an order of magnitude less than found in backward masking experiments with humans and may be an adaptation to the special constraints of echolocation. The short time of sensitivity to masking may indicate that the broad band clicks of arctiid moths produced as a countermeasure to bat predation are unlikely to function by masking the echo of the moth.Abbreviations SPL sound pressure level - SD standard deviation - SE standard error - BW bandwidth  相似文献

Aedes polynesiensis Marks (Diptera: Culicidae) is the primary vector of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the island countries and territories of the South Pacific. In the development of a novel control tool, the response of Ae. polynesiensis to six different colours (three solid fabrics, two patterned fabrics and a plastic tarp) was measured using a digital photographic system. Adult mosquitoes were placed into an environmental chamber and allowed to choose between a white target and one of six experimental targets. Mosquito landing frequency and landing duration were calculated. Adult female Ae. polynesiensis preferred all of the experimental targets to the white control target. Mosquito landing frequency was highest for the solid targets (black, navy blue and red) followed in turn by the two colour pattern targets and the polyethylene target. Mosquito landing duration was greater for experimental targets when compared with white control targets. Mosquito landing frequencies did not change over time during the course of the assay. The response of male Ae. polynesiensis was also measured when exposed to a 100% cotton black target. Male mosquitoes preferred the black target to the white control target, although at levels lower than that observed in female mosquitoes. The results suggest that future investigations evaluating the visual responses of Ae. polynesiensis mosquitoes are warranted, with a special emphasis on semi‐field and field‐based experiments.  相似文献

Although Spartina anglica C.E. Hubbard continues to be invasive in many countries, this species has experienced a drastic decline in coastal China over the last decade. We hypothesize that changes in the duration of tidal immersion were responsible for this decline because the elevation of the S. anglica-dominated area in coastal China has increased greatly over the last decade. We examined the effects of the duration of simulated tidal immersion and plant material provenance on growth, asexual reproduction, biomass accumulation, and allocation (percent of above-ground biomass to total biomass) of S. anglica in a greenhouse experiment. The provenance of S. anglica did not significantly affect any traits measured except for height, stalk diameter, and leaf area. However, all traits were affected by the duration of immersion. Plants grown under 6 h of immersion were taller and had more leaves, more roots, and larger leaf area than those under 2, 4, 8, and 10 h of immersion. Asexual traits and biomass of the plants grown under 6 h of immersion were significantly larger than those under other immersion durations. The results suggested that S. anglica benefits from tidal immersion and decreasing duration of tidal immersion may have resulted in the decline of the S. anglica populations in coastal China. Thus, controlling the duration of tidal immersion may be an effective way of controlling invasiveness of this species elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

A combined stomatal–photosynthesis model was extended to simulate the effects of ozone exposure on leaf photosynthesis and leaf duration in relation to CO2. We assume that ozone has a short‐term and a long‐term effect on the Rubisco‐limited rate of photosynthesis, Ac. Elevated CO2 counteracts ozone damage via stomatal closure. Ozone is detoxified at uptake rates below a threshold value above which Ac decreases linearly with the rate of ozone uptake. Reduction in Ac is transient and depends on leaf age. Leaf duration decreases depending on accumulated ozone uptake. This approach is introduced into the mechanistic crop simulation model AFRCWHEAT2. The derived model, AFRCWHEAT2‐O3, is used to test the capability of these assumptions to explain responses at the plant and crop level. Simulations of short‐term and long‐term responses of leaf photosynthesis, leaf duration and plant and crop growth to ozone exposure in response to CO2 are analysed and compared with experimental data derived from the literature. The model successfully reproduced published responses of leaf photosynthesis, leaf duration, radiation use efficiency and final biomass of wheat to elevated ozone and CO2. However, simulations were unsatisfactory for cumulative radiation interception which had some impact on the accuracy of predictions of final biomass. There were responses of leaf‐area index to CO2 and ozone as a result of effects on tillering which were not accounted for in the present model. We suggest that some model assumptions need to be tested, or analysed further to improve the mechanistic understanding of the combined effects of changes in ozone and CO2 concentrations on leaf photosynthesis and senescence. We conclude that research is particularly needed to improve the understanding of leaf‐area dynamics in response to ozone exposure and elevated CO2.  相似文献

为明确寄主植物对桃蛀螟生长发育及产卵选择行为的影响,利用实验种群生命表和二项产卵选择试验,研究了玉米、大豆、棉花和桃等4种寄主植物对桃蛀螟种群生长发育及产卵选择性的影响。结果表明:取食棉花的桃蛀螟幼虫存活率最低、幼虫历期最长,取食玉米的幼虫存活率最高、幼虫历期最短,取食桃和大豆的幼虫存活率和历期居于棉花处理组和玉米处理组之间;玉米处理组的桃蛀螟化蛹率、蛹重和蛹历期均为最高,棉花处理组为最低,大豆和桃处理组的这些参数均显著小于玉米处理组而大于棉花处理组;发育至成虫后,取食玉米的桃蛀螟羽化率显著高于其他3个处理组;取食桃的桃蛀螟成虫寿命(雌虫和雄虫)及个体发育历期均显著高于其他3种处理组;同时取食桃的桃蛀螟单雌产卵量最高,其次是玉米处理组,两者均显著高于大豆和棉花处理组。二项产卵选择试验结果显示,桃蛀螟雌蛾在棉花和玉米处理组、玉米和大豆处理组或棉花和大豆处理组间的落卵量差异不显著;但在包含桃的处理组中,桃蛀螟在棉花、玉米或大豆处理区的落卵量均显著高于桃处理区。上述结果表明,供试4种寄主植物中,桃蛀螟偏好在棉花、玉米和大豆上产卵,其中玉米对桃蛀螟的适合度相对较高,棉花对桃蛀螟的适合度相对较低。  相似文献

Many conclusions concerning plant responses to CO2 enrichment have been based on assumptions of increased leaf size derived from observations of average leaf area measured at some time well into the growth period. The objectives of this study were to study the effect of elevated CO2 on 1) the timing of mainstem leaflet appearance, 2) the rate and duration of leaflet expansion, and 3) the final area of individual leaflets of soybeans (Glycine max [L.] Merr. cv. Bragg) grown from seed at 348, 502, and 645 μl 1–1 CO2 concentrations. Central leaflet areas from mainstem trifoliolates 1–6 were measured every two days from time of appearance to full expansion. Leaflets tended to appear earlier in elevated CO2 treatments; leaflets 2 through 6 appeared an average of 0.4 days earlier in the 502 μl 1–1 treatment and 1.2 days earlier in the 645 μl 1–1 treatment than in the 349 μl 1–1 treatment. Relative rates of expansion were different among leaflets in their response to elevated CO2; expansion rates of leaflets 1 and 4 were significantly higher at the highest CO2 concentration. However, final area of leaflets was not affected by CO2, or (in leaflet 5 only) was slightly smaller at the highest CO2 treatment. Apparently, higher expansion rates of leaflets 1 and 4 at high CO2 were offset by a tendency for decreased duration of expansion. It appears that there are morphological constraints on final leaflet area in soybean seedlings which limit the effects of elevated CO2 on the early development of mainstem leaf area.  相似文献

The effect of exposure duration to pre-storage (representing fall conditions) and storage (representing winter conditions) temperatures on the emergence rate in sexual and asexual Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Asexual T. brassicae was infected by Wolbachia, an endosymbiont bacterium. We considered 0, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days as exposure duration at 10°C and 0, 30, 60, 90 followed by 180 days as exposure duration at 4°C for both T. brassicae strains. Emergence rate was significantly affected by the presence of Wolbachia, the duration of exposure to 10°C, the duration of storage at 4°C and their interactions, but not by the interaction between strain × storage duration at 4°C. Emergence rate of adults was positively correlated with exposure duration at 10°C, but it gradually decreased as the cold storage duration (4°C) increased in both strains. In conclusion, we are able to store both asexual and sexual strains for longer periods of time at 4°C, but the emergence rate of sexual T. brassicae was greater than asexual in all the treatments. The presence of Wolbachia could have a negative effect on fitness of T. brassicae and reduces its emergence rate after long-term storage.  相似文献

Abstract Urogastrone (UG) increases the rate of mucosal regeneration on patched intestinal defects. Our aim was to determine the effect of the duration of UG administration on regeneration of serosa patched ileal defects in rabbits. Group I (n= 18) were controls. Group II (n= 15), Group III (n= 10) and Group IV (n= 5) received UG 1.5 μ/kg/h subcutaneously for 7 days, 14 days or 21 days respectively. Animals were sacrificed at 7 day intervals up to 21 days after patching. Neomucosal growth was significantly greater in the animals receiving UG and was greatest in Group IV. Group II and III animals had less contraction of the patched defect and greater neomucosal surface area than Group I animals at each interval but had a lesser effect than animals receiving UG continuously. Crypt cell production rate was significantly greater in UG treated animals at 7 and 14 days but fell to control levels at 21 days. Prolonging the duration of UG infusion increased the quantity of neomucosa produced by intestinal regeneration. However, UG stimulation of mucosal cell migration and proliferation occurred transiently within 14 days after patching.  相似文献

In the study area (Yanjiaping Village, Hebei Province, China), grazing extensity varies at different locations, small and discontinuous croplands are imbedded in some arid grassland, which are habitats for the melitaeine butterflies, Euphydryas aurinia and Melitaea phoebe. These two species of butterfilies coexist in this area, in which grazing and cultivation are the main disturbances. Grazing and cultivation have a reciprocal effect on E. aurinia, rather than M. phoebe. We observed that E. aurinia preferred to occupy patches with moderate grazing and imbedded with small and discontinuous croplands, where E. aurinia also has high population density. The percentage of E. aurinia larval groups in the ribbings was significantly higher than that of M. phoebe, whereas larvae of both species tended to increase in recent years. Our data also showed that the population density and the patch occupancy rate of both E. aurinia and M. phoebe were the highest under moderate grazing. It indicates that cultivation of small and discontinuous croplands within the patch has a significant effect on the population density of both species of melitaeine butterflies. Thus, to artificially create or maintain semi-natural habitats, complemented by moderate grazing, might be an ecological strategy to conserve melitaeine butterflies effectively. Considering the distinct impacts of cultivation and grazing on the population distribution and dynamics of the two different species, human disturbance in the mountainous area might be strategically involved in proposing conservation plans for the target species in the future.  相似文献

Canopy expansion, growth and yield were examined in 19 genotypes of potato (Solanurn tuberosum L.) grown either with irrigation or droughted from the time of plant emergence. In the irrigated treatment, genotypes differed both in the maximum leaf area index (Lai) achieved and in the duration the canopy was maintained. Drought reduced both the rate of canopy expansion and the maximum Lai achieved. In the droughted treatment, biomass production was correlated with leaf area duration. The relation between the effect of drought on the growth of individual leaves and biomass or yield is examined. It is concluded that selection for early leaf appearance combined with the ability to sustain leaf growth with increasing soil moisture deficit (SMD) would improve productivity in the presence of drought.  相似文献

In the present study, an effort was made to design prolonged release Eudragit nanoparticles of brimonidine tartrate by double emulsion–solvent evaporation technique for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma. The effect of various formulation variables like initial drug amount, lecithin proportion, phase volume and pH, secondary emulsifier and polymer proportion were studied. Various process variables like energy and duration of emulsification, lyophilization on the characteristics of nanoparticles and in vitro drug release profile were studied. The selected formulations were subjected to in vivo intraocular pressure-lowering efficacy studies by administering aqueous dispersion of nanoparticles into the lower cul de sac of glaucomatous rabbits. The prepared Eudragit-based nanoparticles were found to have narrow particle size range and improved drug loading. The investigated process and formulation variables found to have significant effect on the particle size, drug loading and entrapment efficiency, and in vitro drug release profile of nanoparticles. The selected formulations upon in vivo ocular irritability and tolerability tests were found to be well tolerated with no signs of irritation. In vivo pharmacodynamic efficacy studies revealed that the selected nanoparticle formulations significantly improved the therapy as area under the ∆IOP vs. time curve [AUC(∆IOP vs.t)] showed several fold increase in intensity and duration of intraocular pressure (IOP) decrease. All the selected nanoparticle formulations were found to prolong the drug release in vitro and prolong IOP reduction efficacy in vivo, thus rendering them as a potential carrier in developing improved drug delivery systems for the treatment of glaucoma.  相似文献

Summary Mouse immature oocytes were irradiated in vivo with highly charged, heavy ions from the Bevalac accelerator at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The particles used were 670-MeV/nucleon Si14+, 570-MeV/nucleon Ar18+, and 450-MeV/nucleon Fe26+. The cross-sectional area of the lethality target in these extremely radiosensitive cells was determined from fluence-response curves and information on energy deposition by delta rays. Results indicate a target cross-section larger than that of the nucleus, one which closely approximates the cross-sectional area of the entire oocyte. For 450-MeV/nucleon Fe26+ particles, the predicted target cross-sectional area is 120 ± 16 µm2, comparing well with the microscopically determined cross-sectional area of 111 ± 12µm2 for these cells. The present results are in agreement with our previous target studies which implicate the oocyte plasma membrane.  相似文献

Invasion biology is an important element of global environmental change and represents one of the main threats to biodiversity. American species were introduced to Tenerife after the Spanish conquest during the eighteenth century, as is the case for Agave americana and Opuntia dillenii. The long period of naturalization and adaptation of these species has led them to become two of the most dispersed introduced species of the archipelago. We analyzed several eradication management processes in an area intensively invaded by both O. dillenii and A. americana. Three treatments were randomly applied: mechanical removal, use of herbicide (glyphosate at 10% volume), and mechanical and herbicide applied together. Both the effectiveness of the treatments to remove the target exotic species biovolume and the impact of the eradication methods on species richness and species composition of the area were analyzed. We found that the treatments had an impact on species composition but not on species richness. Species composition was mainly affected by mechanical treatment. The effect caused by the mechanical removal of the exotic target species in species composition is minor after 4 years, and is related to a higher dominance of shrub species typical of coastal shrubland and of annual or pioneer species. The control of O. dillenii and A. americana is evident from insignificant recovery 4 years after treatment application. A mechanical and herbicide treatment together, allowed not only the immediate removal of large individuals but also the herbicidal control of smaller ones.  相似文献

Heading date (HD) is a key trait for the adaptation of rice cultivar to a specific growing region. Here, we report conventional and marker-assisted breeding strategies using genetic information related to the determination of HD, where the breeding objectives were to avoid the delayed heading common in indica × japonica hybrids, to increase the efficiency in selecting hybrid rice combinations having a suitable growth duration, and to develop cultivars with target growth duration by quantitative trait locus (QTL) pyramiding. The allelic constitution at the major HD loci was determined for a set of 109 leading Chinese rice cultivars by crossing them with HD tester lines. It was shown that the late heading in indica × japonica hybrids can be overcome by replacing the strong photoperiod-sensitivity allele Se-1 n with Se-1 e . A breeding strategy to enable the selection of hybrid combinations with suitable growth duration was proposed, based on HD genotypic information in rice. Meanwhile, a QTL analysis for HD was conducted over five years based on a recombinant inbred line population, derived from two parents Asominori (japonica) and IR24 (indica). Four QTLs, located on chromosomes 2, 3, 6, and 8, respectively, could be detected in all five years, indicating they were stably expressed QTL. According to this QTL information, and taking Asominori as an example, the HD genotypes for improving the growth duration were designed, and the best breeding selection schemes were determined by use of a genetic breeding simulation tool. Results obtained in this study demonstrate that genetic information related to HD can make a significant contribution to rice breeding.  相似文献

A single application of gibberellic acid to young internodes significantly accelerated the rate of internode growth and the rate of leaf production in shoots of Xanthium pennsylvanicum Wallr. The average duration of one plastochron in treated plants was reduced to 43% of control levels. Gibberellic acid also had a pronounced morphogenetic effect on leaves so that the area and leaf length of treated plants were both significantly reduced. Depending upon concentration, auxin had both inhibitory and promotive effects on Xanthium shoots. Indole-3-acetic acid markedly altered the response of the gibberellic acid-treated internodes and those located above and below the site of application. In addition, high auxin concentrations induced the formation of adventitious roots in treated internodes. Auxin also brought about significant reductions in the length and area of leaves developed under the influence of this hormone.  相似文献

The two parts of this paper work towards the common aim of setting contexts for and documenting explanations based on historical contingencies. The first part is a review of area effects in Cepaea. We discuss the original definitions and explanations, emphasizing the debate of adaptationist vsstochastic approaches, but arguing that the contrast of historical contingency vs. selective fit to environment forms a more fruitful and fundamental context in discussing the origin of area effects. We argue that contingencies of bottlenecks and opening of formerly unsuited habitats may explain the classic area effects of Cepaea better than selectionist accounts originally proposed. The second part is a documentation of an area effect within Cerion columnaon the northern coast of Great Inagua, Bahamas. Historical explanations are often plagued by insufficiency of preserved information, but the Inagua example provides an unusual density of data, with several independent criteria all pointing to the same conclusion. Shells in the area effect are squat and flat-topped in contrast with typical populations of long, thin, tapering shells living both east and west of the area effect. The flat-topped area effect is a result of introgression with a propagule of the C. dimidiatum stock (living on nearby Cuba, and most apically flattened of all Cerion). Fossils of this propagule were found fully cemented into highly indurated fossil soil crusts within the region of the current area effect. Multivariate morphometry, based on complex patterns of covariation, not just intermediacy in single characters, identifies the area effect samples as hybrids between this propagule and typical C. columna. Genetic analysis has identified three unexpected alleles in area effect samples only, and in no other snails of any other Cerion taxon anywhere else on Inagua. We hypothesize that the flattopped area effect did not arise as a selective response to local environments within C. columna, but by introgression from a fortuitously introduced propagule of the C. dimidiaium complex. The unexpected alleles therefore represent genetic phantoms of C. dimidiatum's former presence or are hybrizymes—novel alleles produced by interspecific hybridization  相似文献
