Data are presented on proximate analyses of the seeds and tuberous roots of Icacina oliviformis(Icacinaceae) from the Central African Republic. The seeds contain 80.7% nitrogen-free extract (NFE), 14.0% crude protein, and 0.5% crude fat (dry weight). The average moisture content of live seeds is 18.3%. The roots contain 84.5% NFE, 4.4% crude protein, and 1.6% crude fat (dry weight). The moisture content of the fresh root is ca. 59%. These results are comparable to those reported for commonly cultivated crops in the study area. The amino acid profile of the seed protein is comparable to that of a protein of moderately high quality, although digestibility was not tested. From a nutritional point of view, this species warrants consideration for integration into agroforestry schemes undertaken in areas where it is currently exploited.  相似文献

The idea of an evolutionary sequence for humans is quite recent. Over the last 150 years, we have discovered unexpected ancestors, numerous close relatives and our deep evolutionary roots in Africa. In the last decade, three Late Miocene hominids have been described, two about 6 Ma (Ardipithecus and Orrorin) in East Africa and the third dated to about 7 Ma (Sahelanthropus) in Central Africa. The specimens are too few to propose definite relationship to other species, but clearly these belong to a new evolutive grade distinct from Australopithecus and Homo. Moreover, all of them were probably habitual bipeds and lived in woodlands, thus falsifying the savannah hypothesis of human origins. In light of all this recent knowledge, Charles Darwin predicted correctly in 1871 that Africa is the birthplace of humans, chimpanzees and our close relatives.  相似文献

The main diterpenoids in the roots of Arctopus (Apiaceae, tribe Saniculeae) have been identified for the first time. The major compounds are manool, ent-trachyloban-19-oic acid and a kauren-19-oic acid, while methyl-16β-hydroxy-ent-kaur-11-en-19-oate is a minor diterpene. Comparative studies of non-polar extracts by means of LC–MS showed that the isolated main compounds are present in all three species of Arctopus. The study also revealed that the diterpenoid pattern in Arctopus is very similar to that of the genus Alepidea. The tuberous roots of Arctopus and the rhizomes and roots of Alepidea are important traditional medicines in South Africa, used mainly for infections and respiratory ailments. Their efficacy is ascribed to antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. The known biological activities of the isolated diterpenes provide a scientific rationale for the traditional uses. The chemical similarity in diterpenoids also supports the idea that the two genera are closely related, despite their conspicuous morphological differences.  相似文献

In order to obtain a tuberous root-specific promoter to be used in the transformation of cassava, a 1,728 bp sequence containing the cassava granule-bound starch synthase (GBSSI) promoter was isolated. The sequence proved to contain light- and sugar-responsive cis elements. Part of this sequence (1,167 bp) was cloned into binary vectors to drive expression of the firefly luciferase gene. Cassava cultivar Adira 4 was transformed with this construct or a control construct in which the luciferase gene was cloned behind the 35S promoter. Luciferase activity was measured in leaves, stems, roots and tuberous roots. As expected, the 35S promoter induced luciferase activity in all organs at similar levels, whereas the GBSSI promoter showed very low expression in leaves, stems and roots, but very high expression in tuberous roots. These results show that the cassava GBSSI promoter is an excellent candidate to achieve tuberous root-specific expression in cassava.  相似文献

Background

Sleeping sickness, also called human African trypanosomiasis, is transmitted by the tsetse, a blood-sucking fly confined to sub-Saharan Africa. The form of the disease in West and Central Africa is carried mainly by species of tsetse that inhabit riverine woodland and feed avidly on humans. In contrast, the vectors for the East and Southern African form of the disease are usually savannah species that feed mostly on wild and domestic animals and bite humans infrequently, mainly because the odours produced by humans can be repellent. Hence, it takes a long time to catch many savannah tsetse from people, which in turn means that studies of the nature of contact between savannah tsetse and humans, and the ways of minimizing it, have been largely neglected.

Methodology/Principal Findings

The savannah tsetse, Glossina morsitans morsitans and G. pallidipes, were caught from men in the Mana Pools National park of Zimbabwe. Mostly the catch consisted of young G. m. morsitans, with little food reserve. Catches were increased by 4–8 times if the men were walking, not stationary, and increased about ten times more if they rode on a truck at 10 km/h. Catches were unaffected if the men used deodorant or were baited with artificial ox odour, but declined by about 95% if the men were with an ox. Surprisingly, men pursuing their normal daily activities were bitten about as much when in or near buildings as when in woodland. Catches from oxen and a standard ox-like trap were poor indices of the number and physiological state of tsetse attacking men.

Conclusion/Significance

The search for new strategies to minimize the contact between humans and savannah tsetse should focus on that occurring in buildings and vehicles. There is a need to design a man-like trap to help to provide an index of sleeping sickness risk.  相似文献

The adventitious roots of some plants will develop into tuberous roots which are widely used in many traditional Chinese medicines, including Pseudostellaria heterophylla. If adventitious root development is inhibited, the yield of Chinese medicinal materials will be reduced. Gibberellic acid is an important phytohormone that promotes plant growth and increases the resistance to drought, flood or disease. However, the effects of gibberellic acid on adventitious roots of Pseudostellaria heterophylla are not clear. Here, we reports GA3 suppressed adventitious root development of Pseudostellaria heterophylla by disturbing the balance of endogenesis hormones. By detecting the contents of various endogenous hormones, we found that the development of adventitious roots negatively correlated with the content of CA3 in tuberous roots. Exogenous GA3 treatment decreased the diameter of adventitious roots, but increased the length of adventitious roots of Pseudostellaria heterophylla. In contrast, blocking the biosynthesis of GA3 suppressed stem growth and promoted the xylem of tuberous roots development. Moreover, exogenous GA3 treatment resulted in imbalance of endogenesis hormones by regulating their synthesis-related genes expression in xylem of tuberous roots. These results suggest GA3 broke the established distribution of hormones by regulating synthesis, transport and biological activation of hormones to activate the apical meristem and suppress lateral meristem. Regulating GA3 signaling during adventitious roots development would be one of the possible ways to increase the yield of P. heterophylla.  相似文献

Two isolectins were isolated from leaves of winged bean andcharacterized. They differed from each other in terms of theirimmunological properties, hemagglutinating activities, sugarinhibition patterns, and amino acid compositions. Both lectinswere acidic and one of them (L-I), which was inactive towardtrypsinized human type O erythrocytes, was similar to one ofgreen shell lectins (WGS-1); which resembled basic seed lectinin its immunological properties. The amino-terminal sequenceof L-I was homologous to that of WGS-1. The amino acid compositionof L-I was similar to that of basic seed lectin, but the extentof the homology between amino-terminal sequences was low whenL-I and basic seed lectin were compared. Examination by ELISArevealed that L-I and WGS-1 were distinct from the basic lectinsof seeds and tuberous roots. L-I had a disulfide bridge betweentwo subunits and it exhibited high hemagglutinating activitytoward human type A erythrocytes, as compared to its activitytoward other erythrocytes. By contrast, the properties of asecond acidic lectin from winged bean leaves (L-II) were verysimilar to those of acidic lectins from seeds and tuberous roots,and the similarities extended as far as the immunological properties. Genuine roots ofSpiranthes sinensis var.amoena were infected with the mycorrhizal fungusRhizoctonia repens immediately after root formation in autumn. Infection by the mycorrhizal fungus extended, reaching a maximum the following early summer. The amount of living mycorrhizal fungus in the genuine roots dramatically declined in the flowering season, and then the roots decomposed. Tuberous roots were formed in spring. Mycorrhizas were limited to local infections and did not spread along the roots. The infection level of living mycorrhizal fungus in the tuberous roots was less than in the genuine roots throughout the year. The amount of dead fungal coils in the tuberous roots increased as the tuberous roots aged. The mycorrhizal characteritics of tuberous roots ofS. sinensis var.amoena were totally different from those of genuine roots although the tuberous roots morphologically resembled the genuine roots. 伏毛铁棒锤不同器官生物碱含量动态变化研究   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
采用紫外分光光度法,对宁夏六盘山地区不同海拔、不同月份、野生和人工栽培的伏毛铁棒锤总生物碱含量进行分析.结果显示:(1)总生物碱在伏毛铁棒锤各器官中均有分布,其中以块根中含量最高(9.07±0.92 mg/g),叶的含量(3.2±1.7 mg/g)最低.(2)块根中的总生物碱含量随生长发育期的变化而不同,其中:6~11月份块根中总生物碱含量随生长期延长而逐渐升高,10月份块根含量达最高(9.07±0.92 mg/g).(3)在同一地区,总生物碱含量随海拔高度的升高而增加,在海拔高度为2 800 m时块根中含量达到10.04±0.51 mg/g,其他器官中总生物碱的含量变化基本相似.(4)在相同海拔高度下,野生伏毛铁棒锤总生物碱含量略高于人工栽培的,但差异不显著(P>0.05).研究表明,人工栽培的伏毛铁棒锤块根可以替代野生种做为药用,且在六盘山区人工种植的块根最佳采收期为10月,在选择人工种植区应考虑选择较高的海拔地区.  相似文献

The fungus-cultivating, mound-building termite Macrotermes bellicosus can reach high densities in African savannah habitats, whereas in forests it is comparatively rare and is only found in relatively open areas. Earlier studies in the Comoé National Park (Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa) suggested that this might be because ambient temperatures are lower in the forest than the savannah. Therefore, forests seem to be suboptimal habitats. During 3 consecutive years we measured relevant fitness parameters in both habitats to test this hypothesis. Colonies in the savannah had higher reproductive outputs. They reproduced annually, producing high numbers of offspring (alates), whereas forest colonies reproduced on average only once every 3?years and even then only low numbers of alates were produced. Annual growth of mound height, which can be regarded as an indicator of colony growth, varied considerably between individual colonies and years. Nevertheless, in two years the growth rate of mounds in the shrub savannah was higher than that of mounds in the gallery forest. Unexpectedly, survival probability as calculated by Kaplan Meier analysis was much lower for colonies in the shrub savannah than for colonies in the gallery forest. Using these data in a computer simulation we calculated lifetime reproductive success (LRS) for an average colony in both habitats. As LRS was much higher for colonies in the shrub savannah than in the gallery forest, these results confirmed our suggestion that the forest is a suboptimal habitat for M. bellicosus.  相似文献

Jarilla chocola (Caricaceae) was evaluated at two locations as a potential new crop. The fruits and tuberous roots of this dioecious, perennial plant contain proteinase. Results show limited potential because of intolerance to freezing, susceptibility to soil-borne pathogens, and only moderate fruit production. Partial shade and moist, well drained soils are required for adequate vegetative development. Seed require an after-ripening period for good germination. There were more male than female plants in small seedling populations, and these bloomed more profusely than female plants.  相似文献

Recent genetic results support the recognition of two African elephant species: Loxodonta africana, the savannah elephant, and Loxodonta cyclotis, the forest elephant. The study, however, did not include the populations of West Africa, where the taxonomic affinities of elephants have been much debated. We examined mitochondrial cytochrome b control region sequences and four microsatellite loci to investigate the genetic differences between the forest and savannah elephants of West and Central Africa. We then combined our data with published control region sequences from across Africa to examine patterns at the continental level. Our analysis reveals several deeply divergent lineages that do not correspond with the currently recognized taxonomy: (i) the forest elephants of Central Africa; the forest and savannah elephants of West Africa; and (iii) the savannah elephants of eastern, southern and Central Africa. We propose that the complex phylogeographic patterns we detect in African elephants result from repeated continental-scale climatic changes over their five-to-six million year evolutionary history. Until there is consensus on the taxonomy, we suggest that the genetic and ecological distinctness of these lineages should be an important factor in conservation management planning.  相似文献

The underground systems of plants show the most varied structures adapted to survival in unfavorable environmental conditions. For instance, long-term droughts may induce the development of either water and reserve substances or vegetative propagation structures. Since Mandevilla atroviolacea is a species found at high altitudes on rocky outcrops, this study aimed to provide information on the morpho-anatomy of the underground system of this species that may assist in understanding the adaptive strategies at play. Samples from the underground system of three young and two mature plants collected in the field were sectioned and processed according to standard plant anatomical techniques. The upper area of the underground system corresponds to a xylopodium, while the lower is a tuberous stem organ. Tuberous roots account for the majority of the underground system. The increase in tuberous root diameter results from the action of a typical cambium. The high shoot-forming potential and storage of water and reserve substances observed in the underground system of this species are important strategies for it to survive in this habitat.  相似文献

Nitrate reductase activity (NRA) in different compartments (leaves, inflorescence stalks, flowers and tuberous roots) of Asphodelus aestivus Brot. (Liliaceae) and actual mineral nitrogen (NO3-N and NH4+-N) in soil surrounding the roots were investigated over one year. Although the highest NRA was found in the leaves, the other plant compartments, such as flowers and tuberous roots, also have nitrate assimilation capacity. High nitrate assimilation capacity under suitable conditions is considered to be a good strategy for development and dominance of this species in Mediterranean environments. There was a seasonal variation in nitrate assimilation in leaves and actual NO3-N content of soils. Depending on actual nitrate content of soils, nitrate assimilation increased in winter.  相似文献

The savannah biome of sub-Saharan Africa harbours the highest diversity of ungulates (hoofed mammals) on Earth. In this review, we compile population genetic data from 19 codistributed ungulate taxa of the savannah biome and find striking concordance in the phylogeographic structuring of species. Data from across taxa reveal distinct regional lineages, which reflect the survival and divergence of populations in isolated savannah refugia during the climatic oscillations of the Pleistocene. Data from taxa across trophic levels suggest distinct savannah refugia were present in West, East, Southern and South-West Africa. Furthermore, differing Pleistocene evolutionary biogeographic scenarios are proposed for East and Southern Africa, supported by palaeoclimatic data and the fossil record. Environmental instability in East Africa facilitated several spatial and temporal refugia and is reflected in the high inter- and intraspecific diversity of the region. In contrast, phylogeographic data suggest a stable, long-standing savannah refuge in the south.  相似文献

Data are presented on the ecology and production ofIcacina oliviformis (Poiret) Raynal in natural stands in northern Central African Republic. The species grows on a variety of soils and in numerous plant communities. It is fire adapted, and thrives when burned in the early dry season. The plant is primarily bee pollinated and has a number of pests that infest the stems and young fruits. Plant densities are high, with a maximum of ca. 5345 plants/ha in the study sites. Standing tuberous root biomass can be considerable, with a maximum of ca. 19904 kg/ha for the study sites. Seed yield in the sample sites was relatively low with a maximum of ca. 214 kg/ha. With proper management, yields of both seed and tuberous roots could be substantially increased.  相似文献
