报道了萼花臂尾轮虫休眠卵的低温贮存时间、萌发温度、光照、孵化液等因子对其萌发的影响.休眠卵萌发率随低温贮存时间的延长而提高,以贮存30~50d作用最显著.在10~30℃温度范围内.萌发率随温度的升高而增加,超过30℃时,萌发率则有所下降.光对休眠卵的萌发是一非必需条件。把休眠卵从不新鲜的孵化液转移到新鲜的孵化液中能刺激其萌发.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and salinity on resting egg size of two Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifers) clones was investigated. Clones were selected according to their different behaviour in laying resting eggs: one clone ejects them, whereas they remain inside the females body in the other clone. The difference in resting eggs size between the two clones is noticeable, although the difference is not as great as that between female body size. An important temperature-salinity interaction on resting egg size has been observed. The general inverse relationship between size and temperature is only true at lower temperatures. At high temperatures size varies around the mean although could be greater than at intermediate temperatures. This is more evident at the intermediate salinity tested which is considered to be the closest to the optimum in our experiments. This pattern of variation suggests that mean size is bigger than expected, in relation to temperature and salinity, when these factors have values close to the extremes of their range, normally found in nature, and to which adaptative mechanisms can evolve. Size is bigger at the salinity — temperature low - low and high - high combinations which are the most commonly found in the temperate environments.  相似文献

Surface topography and layering of resting eggs of Brachionus plicatilis and B. rotundiformis are described, based on scanning and transmission electron microscope studies. In B. plicatilis, the resting eggs are spherical with smooth wavy ridges on the surface, whereas these ridges are small and condensed in B. rotundiformis. The distribution of pores on the egg surface clearly distinguishes the two species.Ultrastructure of the egg membranes of both species varies greatly with regard to size, shape and sculpturing of each membrane. The alveolar and dense sublayers, which constitute the outer egg membrane (S1) are very thick (10–12 µm) in B. rotundiformis compared to B. plicatilis (4–5 µm). Thus, each species has a characteristic surface and membrane architecture. The functional roles of these membranes, during the resting phase of rotifers, are discussed.  相似文献

Hatching of cladoceran resting eggs: temperature and photoperiod   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Summary 1. We identified temperature and photoperiod conditions under which the hatching of 45 cladoceran species could be elicited. Identification of appropriate hatching cues is of primary importance for the exploration of the ties between active and diapausing stages.
2. Incubation temperature affected the hatching success of resting eggs isolated from Danish, Belgian/Dutch and Spanish sediments. In general, most hatchlings and species were retrieved at 15 °C. Danish and Belgian/Dutch resting eggs hatched more successfully under a long day photoperiod than in continuous illumination.
3. Most species could be retrieved after incubation of resting eggs isolated from a limited amount of sediment (0.4 kg) under a single, well chosen combination of temperature and photoperiod. Processing additional sediment samples under seven more incubation regimes only allowed detection of 21% (Spain) to 34% (Denmark) more species.
4. The incubation period for resting eggs to hatch was strongly influenced by incubation temperature. Our results show that hatching experiments aimed at assessing cladoceran species richness and conducted at 15 °C should be continued for a period of at least 2 weeks, after which a random subset of hatchlings (e.g. n  = 100) can be selected from the total hatchling assemblage.  相似文献

The development of cost-effective molecular tools allowing the amplification of minute amounts of DNA effectively opened the field of molecular ecology for rotifers. Here I review these techniques and the advances they have provided in the understanding of sibling species complexes, clonal structure, resting egg banks, population structure, phylogeographic patterns and phylogenetic relationships in rotifers. Most of the research to date has focused on the rotifer species complex Brachionus plicatilis. The use of DNA sequence and microsatellite variation, in the context of the background knowledge of life history, mating behaviour, and temporal population dynamics in these organisms have revolutionised our views into the processes shaping the genetic diversity in aquatic invertebrates. Rotifers have populations with a very high number of clones in genetic equilibrium. In temporary populations clonal selection is effective in eroding the number of clones. Rotifer populations are strongly differentiated genetically for neutral markers, even at small geographical scales, and exhibit deep phylogeographic structure which might reflect the impact of Pleistocene glaciations. Despite the high potential for dispersal afforded by resting eggs, rotifers display persistent historical colonisation effects, with gene flow effective only at a local scale and with marked isolation by distance. Instances of long-distance transcontinental migration resulting in successful colonisation have also been revealed. B. plicatilis is composed of a group of several ancient species and sympatry is common. Despite this, the presence of cosmopolitan species in this species complex cannot be discounted. I discuss future priorities and point out the main areas where our knowledge is still insufficient.  相似文献

The effects of sublethal levels of endosulfan (0, 1, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.3 mg 1–1) on the demography of the rotifer Brachionus calyciorus were studied. Life expectancy at birth (e o), net reproductive rate (Ro), generation time (T) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) were significant differentes between blank controls and controls with acetone. The effective endosulfan concentration at which a given parameter value was reduced to 50% of the controls (EC50) was calculated for life expectancy.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate interspecific interactions between the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and two harmful algal bloom (HAB) species using single and mixed culture methods. B. plicatilis populations and the growth of two algae were compared at different algal cell densities. The results demonstrate that B. plicatilis obtained sufficient nutrition from Alexandrium tamarense to support net population increase. When exposed to a density of 8 × 104 cells ml−1 A. tamarense, the number of B. plicatilis increased faster than it did when exposed to other four algal densities (16 × 104, 24 × 104, 32 × 104, and 40 × 104 cells ml−1). Cell densities of A. tamarense decreased due to the grazing of B. plicatilis. In contrast, Heterosigma akashiwo had an adverse effect on the B. plicatilis population and its growth was largely unaffected by rotifer grazing. In this case, the B. plicatilis population decreased and H. akashiwo grew at a rate similar to that of a control without addition of rotifers. Mixed culture experiments showed that A. tamarense could partly counteract the effect of H. akashiwo in limiting the rate of population increase of rotifer. In addition, the effect of different initial cell densities on interspecific competition between A. tamarense and H. akashiwo in mixed culture(s) was also investigated. The effects of organophosphate pesticide, diazinon, on life history parameters and hatchability of resting eggs of rotifer Brachionus plicalitis were assessed. Newly hatched (<1 h-old) neonates were individually cultured in six varying concentrations (0/control, 0.1, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 mg/l) of diazinon. The life history parameters such as time (h) the rotifers bear first egg and release first neonate, reproductive period, net reproductive rate, mixis, intrinsic rate of population increase, and life span were evaluated. Results showed that among the life history parameters, the time the rotifers took to release neonates is the most sensitive, giving the lowest EC50 value of 1.24 mg/l. The fecundity of maternal females, amictic and mictic daughters was also investigated. Rotifers exposed to 10.0 mg/l produced significantly fewer amictic daughters, and at this concentration, rotifers did not produce any mictic daughter. At 5.0 mg/l, the number of male offspring was significantly lower than the control. Furthermore, the hatchability of resting eggs produced by the rotifers was evaluated when exposed to diazinon: from birth until they produced resting eggs (early development); during late developmental stage of resting eggs (before diapause); and during diapausing stage. The hatchability of the resting eggs was not affected when exposure was timed at late developmental and diapausing stages. Overall results showed that even though amictic females reproduced normally in the presence of low-concentration of diazinon, sexual reproduction is severely affected, especially the hatchability of resting eggs when the exposure was timed on its early developmental stages. Using population densities and growth rates as criteria, we studied interactions between the epizoic rotifer Brachionus rubens and each of three cladoceran species differing in size and reproductive rates — Daphnia carinata, Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia rigaudi. In all mixed — species experiments, B. rubens existed in both the epizoic mode, attached to the cladoceran host, and in the free-swimming mode. Rotifer population growth rates were significantly depressed in the presence of M. macrocopa, presumably as a consequence of exploitative and interference competition. The largest cladoceran, D. carinata probably did not suppress B. rubens, because the epizoic component of the rotifer population escaped from the deleterious effects of mechanical interference. Peak population numbers and initial population growth rates reached by all three cladocerans were lower in the presence of B. rubens, probably because of the adverse effects of the epizoic infestation, which was maximal on D. carinata and least on C. rigaudi. In mixed-species cultures of D. carinata and M. macrocopa, the presence of B. rubens helped D. carinata coexist with M. macrocopa, which otherwise would have suppressed the Daphnia.  相似文献

Brachionus plicatilis females were maintained for > 24 hours in water where the concentration of oxygen was precisely controlled (spherical flasks with 6 mg l–1 or < 0.5 mg l–1; food = dead Tetraselmis sp.). Each female was randomly taken from one flask and quickly placed in an observation chamber containing the same experimental conditions. The swimming path was videotaped (5 minutes); then the size of the female was measured. The tape was analyzed by automatic tracking (25 x,y coordinates of the center of the animal, in a 512 × 512 pixels space). The swimming path was analyzed for 45 females in both treatments. The speed (mm s–1 body length–1) was calculated for all trajectories, or only for those segments where females swam in a horizontal plane. This relative speed significantly decreased when the concentration of oxygen was very low. There was a negative correlation between the linear speed and the angular speed. The spatial sinuosity (S of Bovet & Benhamou, 1988) was calculated. The trajectories were significantly more sinuous when the concentration of oxygen was very low. These results could explain the accumulation of some rotifers in the oxycline; rotifers may spend more time in very low concentrations of oxygen by slowing and by turning more.  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer Brachionus rubens has a propensity for an epizoic mode of life, and in nature is often found attached to cladocerans. In this way the rotifer avoids to a certain extent the adverse effects of interference competition with cladocerans. We test the hypothesis that the epizoic habit of B. rubens acts also as a deterrent against invertebrate predation. Using Asplanchna intermedia as predator, we followed the population growth patterns of B. rubens alone and in the presence of the host species Daphnia carinata and Ceriodaphnia rigaudi. In the absence of cladocerans, the prey was eliminated within three days, followed by extinction of the predator due to starvation. With D. carinata in the medium, the prey-predator system persisted much longer, with B. rubens reaching high population densities. With the smaller-sized C. rigaudi, allowing a significantly smaller fraction of B. rubens population to be epizoic, the system persisted longer than in the controls, but both the prey and predator eventually became extinct. We conclude that the epizoic habit of B. rubens, by acting as a prey refugium, helps a portion of the population to escape from predation, and facilitates its coexistence with Asplanchna intermedia.  相似文献

Crossbreeding experiments with three geographically distinct strains (E, S, and L) of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis have been carried out in an attempt to elucidate the apparent male sterility of strain L, which is unable to produce resting eggs.The 9 crossing possibilities of the three strains have been investigated in 27 experiments. The results refute the concept of male sterility. L-males copulate successfully with mictic as well as with amictic females of strains E and S. Fertilized amictic E and S females produce defective resting eggs, which have only one thin shell and, which disintegrate after deposition. L-females cannot, as a rule, be fertilized. Moreover, crosses between strain E and S are succesful only in one direction; the reciprocal crosses failed.To explain the present results a hypothesis is suggested that the thickness of the body wall of newborn females differs in the three strains, and between mictic and amictic individuals. A sequence of gradually increasing body wall thickness of all types of females involved, together with a comparably increasing penetration ability of the males of strain E, S, and L explains the success or failure of all crosses, including the unilateral cross E × S.  相似文献

We discuss the energetics of a cladoceran, Simocephalus vetulus at different temperatures (8.0 ± 1.0, 15.0 ± 1.0, 21.0 ± 1.0 and 28.0 ± 1.0 °C) and food (Chlamydomonas sp.) concentrations (25 × 103, 50 × 103, 75 × 103 and 100 × 103 cells ml−1). Increase in temperature accelerated ingestion and, to some extent, oxygen consumption. The study revealed a high reproduction efficiency in S. vetulus. Net growth efficiency (ECI) was higher (13.17–41.18%) in pre-adults than in adults (2.71–8.40%). The assimilated energy (A) increased with increasing food concentration at all temperatures. Assimilation efficiency (AD) decreased with increasing food concentrations. The energy used for growth (P) was nearly constant at all food levels because the egested energy increased and assimilation efficiency decreased as food concentration increased.  相似文献

The combined effects of sublethal levels of DDT (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 µg·l–1) and food (Chlorella at 1 and 3 × 106 cells ml–1) on the demography of the rotifer Brachionus patulus were studied. The average lifespan, life expectancy, net reproductive rate (Ro) and intrinsic rate of increase (r) were significantly greater at the higher food level, but declined with increasing DDT concentration. A significant DDT food interaction was manifested in the toxicity-mitigating action of the higher food density at higher DDT levels. The r values were negative at DDT levels 30 µg · l–1 and above, only when food density was low. The effective DDT concentration at which a given parameter value was reduced to 50% of that in the controls (EC50) was lower at lower food levels for both survivorship and reproduction, and lower for reproduction than for survivorship at either food level.  相似文献

The resting eggs of the Ctenopoda have been studied since the second half of the 19th century. By now they are known in 21 species of the group but only in 4 species (Sida crystallina, Diaphanosoma brachyurum, Penilia avistoris and Holopedium gibberum) have they been investigated thoroughly. Gross and internal structure of eggs are characterized by considerable diversity. In general their structure has much in common with resting eggs of the Anostraca, Notostraca, Conchostraca and Onychopoda as well as with that of some other remotely related groups of freshwater invertebrates (Rotifera, Hydra). The taxonomic value of resting eggs is discussed. Probably they play a significant role in determining geographical distribution. Waterfowl are the main agent of their dispersal.  相似文献

Induction of diapausing amictic eggs in Synchaeta pectinata   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Amictic females of a clone of S. pectinata from Star Lake (Norwich, Vermont) may produce diapausing as well as non-diapausing (subitaneous) eggs. The proportion of diapausing eggs produced in cultures was unaffected by temperature (12 vs 19 °C) or rotifer population density (minima of 0.33 vs 3 ind. ml–1) at 19 °C. However, at 19 °C this proportion was higher in cultures maintained at a low food level suppressing reproduction (5 × 103 cells ml–1 Cryptomonas erosa) than in those maintained at a high food level (2 × 104 cells ml–1); the treatment effect was marginally significant (p=0.067). Consistent with the effect of low food availability, a period of starvation was very effective in inducing the development of diapausing eggs. None of 19 females cultured individually from hatching at 19 °C on C. erosa (2 × 104 cells ml–1) in 1-ml volumes produced any diapausing eggs in 4 days (0 out of 349 eggs), while 13 out of 16 females subjected to a 15-hour starvation period 6 hours after birth produced one or more diapausing eggs during that time (34% of the 158 eggs produced by the 16 females were diapausing). Diapausing eggs produced and left at 19 °C hatched after 4 to 13 days. Those produced in cultures with a low food level took significantly longer to hatch (9.7 days) than those produced in cultures with a high food level (8.1 days) (p=0.022). In natural communities, S. pectinata should be able to respond directly and rapidly to poor food conditions by producing eggs that undergo an obligatory dormant period before resuming development.  相似文献

Six different pH ranges were tested for the hatching rate of Triops cancriformis cysts. Cumulative hatching numbers approach to approximately 50% of cysts. The highest hatching rates, co-occurring with the shortest hatching times, were recorded in the neutral range. No hatching took place at pH values 9 and above. This corresponds with the most frequent habitats of this species, snowmelt pools of river flood plains as well as aestival pools caused by heavy rainfalls. Occurrences in sodic alkaline pans can be explained by relatively low pH values at the time of inundation.  相似文献

1. Life‐table experiments with Brachionus calyciflorus test several hypotheses related to the idea that sexual reproduction in monogonont rotifers should occur when food resources are favourable. 2. The food concentration necessary for a fertilised mictic female to produce one phenotypically normal resting egg was higher than that for an amictic female to produce one daughter. At the lowest concentration of Cryptomonas erosa (1.25 × 103 cells mL?1), the lifetime fecundity of these two types of females was 0.9 and 1.4, respectively. 3. The lifetime fecundity of both fertilised mictic females and amictic females increased with food concentration to 3.4 resting eggs and 15.2 daughters female?1, respectively. The approach to maximal fecundity with increasing food concentration was more rapid for fertilised mictic females, such that their lifetime fecundity relative to that of amictic females gradually decreased from 0.64 (at 1.25 × 103 C. erosa mL?1) to 0.22 (at 2.5 × 104 C. erosa mL?1). 4. The probability of a fertilised mictic female producing one or more abnormal resting eggs during her lifetime was high (approximately 75%). The mean proportion of abnormal eggs produced per female varied among the different food‐concentration treatments (26–38%) but was not higher at the low food concentrations. 5. The proportion of normal resting eggs that hatched was high (51–71%); those produced at low food concentrations were no less likely to hatch than those produced at high food concentrations. No abnormal resting eggs hatched. 6. The probability of a fertilised mictic female producing an abnormal resting egg increased rapidly with her age at all food concentrations. The probability of a normal resting egg hatching declined with maternal age at the low food concentration in one of two experiments. 7. The results support the idea that induction of mictic females should occur when food resources are good. Coincidence of sexual reproduction with low food availability risks low production of resting eggs for several reasons. Population size may be small, with a low probability of encounters between young mictic females and males, and fertilised mictic females may be unable to mature and produce resting eggs.  相似文献

Using a polyclonal antibody against the mate recognition pheromone (MRP) of Brachionus rotundiformis Koshiki strain, we investigated the behavioral reproductive isolation and the similarity of MRP among geographically and temporally isolated B. rotundiformis strains. Males of the Koshiki strain did not discriminate in mating attempts among females of the Koshiki strain and those of conspecific allopatric strains from Hamana, Fiji, Thailand and Spain. Likewise, Koshiki males attempted mating with statistically indistinguishable frequency with Koshiki females and B. plicatilis strains. However, copulation was not consummated between Koshiki males and B. plicatilis females. The amount of anti-MRP binding to three allopatric B. rotundiformis strains was similar to that of the Koshiki strain, but binding to Hamana and the B. plicatilis strain was significantly lower. Four temporally separated B. rotundiformis populations were hatched from resting eggs collected from 0, 5, 10 and 15 cm depth in the sediment of Kai-ike pond in Koshiki island, Japan. Sediment age was determined using the 210Pb method, allowing us to estimate that resting eggs from 15 cm depth were produced 65 years ago. Results of mating assays and anti-MRP binding showed that no behavioral reproductive isolation exists among the four temporally isolated Koshiki strains. B. rotundiformis appears to be reproductively isolated from B. plicatilis, but heterospecific matings are still attempted between B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis, suggesting that the MRP remains sufficiently similar to elicit circling behavior.  相似文献

Methods are presented to extract and purify mitochondrial DNA from the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. The mtDNA obtained is of sufficient purity for digestion with restriction endonucleases. EcoR I restriction patterns are presented for 4 geographically separated clones. A restriction map based on digestion with 5 different restriction enzymes is included for one of these clones. Finally, use of mtDNA analysis for studies on the population structure and biogeography of rotifers is discussed.  相似文献
