In this study, a new method is proposed to estimate the torque-vector directions of each shoulder muscle. The method is based on a multiple regression model that reconstructs shoulder torque, which is calculated from the hand force and posture, from the surface EMG of many muscles recorded simultaneously. The torque-vector directions of eleven shoulder muscles of four subjects were obtained at up to 30 different arm postures with this method. The mean confidence interval (p < 0.05) of the estimated torque-vector direction of each subject was 7.7-10.6 degrees. The correlation coefficient between the measured shoulder torque and reconstructed shoulder torque was between 0.76-0.84. The results for majority of the muscles were in accordance with previous studies, and reasonable from the viewpoint of anatomy. The torque-vector directions of a muscle, which are estimated with this method, have more of a functional meaning than a pure anatomical or mechanical one. These indicate the direction of the shoulder torque accompanying the muscle activation for a normal shoulder action that involves the cooperative contraction of many muscles.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the use of cross-correlation analysis between simulated surface electromyograms (EMGs) of two muscles to quantify motor unit synchronization. The volume conductor simulated a cylindrical limb with two muscles and bone, fat, and skin tissues. Models of two motor neuron pools were used to simulate 120 s of surface EMG that were detected over both muscles. Short-term synchrony was established using a phenomenological model that aligned the discharge times of selected motor units within and across muscles to simulate physiological levels of motor unit synchrony. The correlation between pairs of surface EMGs was estimated as the maximum of the normalized cross-correlation function. After imposing four levels of motor unit synchrony across muscles, five parameters were varied concurrently in the two muscles to examine their influence on the correlation between the surface EMGs: 1) excitation level (5, 10, 15, and 50% of maximum); 2) muscle size (350 and 500 motor units); 3) fat thickness (1 and 4 mm); 4) skin conductivity (0.1 and 1 S/m); and 5) mean motor unit conduction velocity (2.5 and 4 m/s). Despite a constant and high level of motor unit synchronization among pairs of motor units across the two muscles, the cross-correlation index ranged from 0.08 to 0.56, with variation in the five parameters. For example, cross-correlation of EMGs from pairs of hand muscles, each having thin layers of subcutaneous fat and mean motor unit conduction velocities of 4 m/s, may be relatively insensitive to the level of synchronization across muscles. In contrast, cross-correlation of EMGs from pairs of leg muscles, with larger fat thickness, may exhibit a different sensitivity. These results indicate that cross correlation of the surface EMGs from two muscles provides a limited measure of the level of synchronization between motor units in the two muscles.  相似文献

An estimate of the average number of evolutionarily acceptable substitutions per nucleotide since the most recent common ancestor of a pair of homologous sequences is found which uses nucleotide sequence data. The estimate is derived assuming a Poisson-like model for the evolutionary process. A method is also suggested for analyzing nucleotide sequence data in M homologous sequences (M 3). A simulation study is reported showing that the estimates are satisfactory providing there is sufficient homology between the sequences. To demonstrate the methods a numerical example using some β-globin data is presented.  相似文献

PurposeWe compared electromyography (EMG) recorded from the shoulder joint muscles in the same position for different movement directions.MethodsFifteen healthy subjects participated. They performed shoulder elevation from 0° to 120°, shoulder depression from 120° to 0°, shoulder horizontal adduction from ?15° to 105°, and shoulder horizontal abduction from 105° to ?15°. The target positions were 90° shoulder elevation in the 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° planes (0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° positions). EMG signals were recorded from the supraspinatus (SSP) muscle by fine-wire electrodes. EMG signals from the infraspinatus (ISP), anterior deltoid, middle deltoid, and posterior deltoid muscles were recorded using active surface electrodes.ResultsDuring elevation and horizontal abduction, the SSP showed significantly higher activity than that shown during depression and during horizontal adduction in the 0°, 30°, and 60° positions. During elevation, the ISP showed significantly higher activity than during depression and during horizontal adduction in the 90° position. During horizontal abduction, the ISP showed significantly higher activity than during depression in the 90° position.ConclusionsWhen the movement tasks were performed in different movement directions at the same speed, each muscle showed characteristic activity.  相似文献

Assessment of neuromuscular fatigue is essential for early detection and prevention of risks associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. In recent years, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) of surface electromyography (SEMG) has been used to evaluate muscle fatigue, especially during dynamic contractions when the SEMG signal is non-stationary. However, its application to the assessment of work-related neck and shoulder muscle fatigue is not well established. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish DWT analysis as a suitable method to conduct quantitative assessment of neck and shoulder muscle fatigue under dynamic repetitive conditions. Ten human participants performed 40 min of fatiguing repetitive arm and neck exertions while SEMG data from the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles were recorded. The ten of the most commonly used wavelet functions were used to conduct the DWT analysis. Spectral changes estimated using power of wavelet coefficients in the 12–23 Hz frequency band showed the highest sensitivity to fatigue induced by the dynamic repetitive exertions. Although most of the wavelet functions tested in this study reasonably demonstrated the expected power trend with fatigue development and recovery, the overall performance of the “Rbio3.1” wavelet in terms of power estimation and statistical significance was better than the remaining nine wavelets.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of measuring blood meal volume in Aedes aegypti using a radioisotope blood label in lieu of weight differentials. This mosquito species defaecated numerous droplets of a clear fluid beginning while blood feeding was in progress and continuing for up to 3 hr post-feeding. Excretion of this clear fluid occurred regardless of the age or prior nutritional conditioning of the mosquito. When mosquitoes were fed on blood labeled with Ce-144, this radioisotope remained completely with the blood meal and was not passed in the clear excreta. When blood meal volumes were estimated using the radioisotope method, significantly greater values were obtained compared to those calculated by the classical weighing method. A direct relationship was demonstrated between blood meal volume and the quantity of clear fluid excreted. Consequently, the error inherent in the weighing method was increased in mosquitoes taking large blood meals. Ce-144 did not label red blood cells but remained in the plasma. The radioisotope was completely expelled with the blood meal excreta.This technique is compared with related methods previously described. Its applications to problems in mosquito physiology and vector potential are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the application and evaluation of a stereological method for counting fish oocytes. The method has been applied to herring, Clupea harengus L., Dover sole, Solea solea L., and mackerel, Scomber scombrus L., and compared with existing volumetric and/or automated particle counter methods. The goal of linkage mapping is to find the true order of loci from a chromosome. Since the number of possible orders is large even for a modest number of loci, the problem of finding the optimal solution is known as a NP-hard problem or traveling salesman problem (TSP). Although a number of algorithms are available, many either are low in the accuracy of recovering the true order of loci or require tremendous amounts of computational resources, thus making them difficult to use for reconstructing a large-scale map. We developed in this article a novel method called unidirectional growth (UG) to help solve this problem. The UG algorithm sequentially constructs the linkage map on the basis of novel results about additive distance. It not only is fast but also has a very high accuracy in recovering the true order of loci according to our simulation studies. Since the UG method requires n-1 cycles to estimate the ordering of n loci, it is particularly useful for estimating linkage maps consisting of hundreds or even thousands of linked codominant loci on a chromosome.  相似文献

Background  

Microarray technology is a high-throughput method for measuring the expression levels of thousand of genes simultaneously. The observed intensities combine a non-specific binding, which is a major disadvantage with microarray data. The Affymetrix GeneChip assigned a mismatch (MM) probe with the intention of measuring non-specific binding, but various opinions exist regarding usefulness of MM measures. It should be noted that not all observed intensities are associated with expressed genes and many of those are associated with unexpressed genes, of which measured values express mere noise due to non-specific binding, cross-hybridization, or stray signals. The implicit assumption that all genes are expressed leads to poor performance of microarray data analyses. We assume two functional states of a gene - expressed or unexpressed - and propose a robust method to estimate gene expression states using an order relationship between PM and MM measures.  相似文献

We report a method for studying global DNA methylation based on using bisulfite treatment of DNA and simultaneous PCR of multiple DNA repetitive elements, such as Alu elements and long interspersed nucleotide elements (LINE). The PCR product, which represents a pool of approximately 15000 genomic loci, could be used for direct sequencing, selective restriction digestion or pyrosequencing, in order to quantitate DNA methylation. By restriction digestion or pyrosequencing, the assay was reproducible with a standard deviation of only 2% between assays. Using this method we found that almost two-thirds of the CpG methylation sites in Alu elements are mutated, but of the remaining methylation target sites, 87% were methylated. Due to the heavy methylation of repetitive elements, this assay was especially useful in detecting decreases in DNA methylation, and this assay was validated by examining cell lines treated with the methylation inhibitor 5-aza-2′deoxycytidine (DAC), where we found a 1–16% decrease in Alu element and 18–60% LINE methylation within 3 days of treatment. This method can be used as a surrogate marker of genome-wide methylation changes. In addition, it is less labor intensive and requires less DNA than previous methods of assessing global DNA methylation.  相似文献

The diffusion coefficients of radioactively labelled substances in cytoplasm or other fluids are determined in vitro. The fluid containing the labelled substance is filled into a cylinder with one open end, through which the labelled substance diffuses out into a stirred outer medium. The diffusion coefficient is calculated by a one-dimensional diffusion equation from the rate of loss from the cylinder, and the length of the cylinder. The diffusion coefficients of tritiated water in several fluids have been determined. The results are in good agreement with those obtained by other methods.  相似文献

Summary Most probable number of ammonium oxidising bacteria in soil has been estimated without the need to carry out chemical tests to determine the production of nitrite or nitrate in dilution tubes. The medium used contained phenol red which changes colour from pink to yellow as the oxidation of ammonium to nitrate decreases the pH. This makes it possible to determine growth visually. An incubation period of 8 weeks at 25°C was sufficient to obtain maximum estimates of ammonium oxidising bacteria in the soils tested.  相似文献

The concept of developmental instability (DI) is frequently used in evolutionary biology, and a range of definitions has been proposed. Moreover, numerous different statistical methods have been used for estimation of DI. The common basis for all methods is that measures need to be obtained from repeated structures within organisms. In the case of fluctuating asymmetry, mirror images could be interpreted as the repeats of each other. All repeats of a trait on one organism should, from a quantitative perspective, have the same genetic foundation. Most previous methods have not accounted for the genetics of the underlying trait. It is here shown how a statistical method from quantitative genetics (the repeated records animal model) can be used for assessment of DI, based on estimation of the variance due to the permanent environment. Moreover, Gibbs sampling is used for inference of the parameters, which provides a Bayesian framework where posterior distributions easily can be calculated from any functions of the variance components. The method is applied to a real dataset from two populations of the plant Scabiosa canescens, and results shows that it works well under realistic situations.  相似文献

Breathing, diaphragmatic and transversus abdominis electromyograms (EMGdi and EMGta, respectively), and arterial blood gases were studied during normoxia (arterial PO2 = 95 Torr) and 48 h of hypoxia (arterial PO2 = 40-50 Torr) in intact (n = 11) and carotid body-denervated (CBD, n = 9) awake ponies. In intact ponies, arterial PCO2 was 7, 5, 9, and 11 Torr below control (P less than 0.01) at 1 and 10 min and 5 and 24-48 h of hypoxia, respectively. In CBD ponies, arterial PCO2 was 3-4 Torr below control (P less than 0.01) at 4, 5, 6, and 24 h of hypoxia. In intact ponies, pulmonary ventilation, mean inspiratory flow rate, and rate of rise of EMGdi and EMGta changed in a multi-phasic fashion during hypoxia; each reached a maximum during the 1st h (P less than 0.05), declined between 1 and 5 h (P less than 0.05), and increased between 5 and 24-48 h of hypoxia. As a result of the increased drive to the diaphragm, the mean EMGdi was above control throughout hypoxia (P less than 0.05). In contrast, as a result of a sustained reduction in duration of the EMGta, the mean EMGta was below control for most of the hypoxic period. In CBD ponies, pulmonary ventilation and mean inspiratory flow rate did not change during chronic hypoxia (P greater than 0.10). In these ponies, the rate of rise of the EMGdi was less than control (P less than 0.05) for most of the hypoxic period, which resulted in the mean EMGdi to also be less than control (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
