Inclusive fitness theory suggests that cannibalistic individuals should preferentially eat unrelated prey when given a choice between related and unrelated individuals. Using the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis, I investigated whether having contact with siblings during a sensitive ontogenetic phase or not determines whether cannibalistic protonymphs tend to eat more sibling or nonsibling larvae in choice situations. Cannibals reared with siblings preferentially ate nonsibling larvae when these had been reared in a sibling group but showed no preference when the larvae had been reared in isolation. Cannibals reared in isolation showed no preference when the larvae had been reared in a sibling group and preferentially ate sibling larvae when these had been reared alone. The occurrence of preferential sibling cannibalism when both cannibal and prey had been reared in isolation suggests the use of self-referent phenotype matching to distinguish between siblings and nonsiblings.  相似文献

Young frogs, Xenopus laevis, raised on a white background showed a slight preference for the black background of a black-white preference testing apparatus. Keeping frogs for either 24 hr or 20 days on a black background resulted in a further increase in their preference for black. Injecting 1 μg of synthetic α-MSH into white-adapted frogs had no effect on their black-white preference. On the other hand, Xenopus laevis tadpoles, at an early stage of metamorphosis, raised on a white background showed a significant preference for white. Keeping these tadpoles for 24 hr on a black background resulted in a shift from white to black preference. Injecting synthetic α-MSH into white-adapted tadpoles resulted in an increase in their preference for black. A behavioral feedback mechanism appears to exist between the release of endogenous MSH when a tadpole is exposed to a black background and its subsequent preference for background color.  相似文献

Non-aquatic reproductive modes have evolved among frogs possibly favored by some advantages such as the avoidance of aquatic predators. These reproductive modes, however, make the egg clutches susceptible to terrestrial predators, among which Diptera larvae are some of the most harmful. The present work reports the predation by phorid flies of 22 egg clutches of Phyllomedusa iheringii Boulenger in the South of Brazil. Phorid specimens were identified as Megaselia bruchiana (Borgmeier & Schmitz) and Megaselia necrophaga (Enderlein), species that were reported previously to be associated with ants and dead beetles, respectively. Frog-feeding in these species is hypothesized to be use of an alternative seasonal food source. We amend the diagnoses of both Megaselia species and provide new illustrations to facilitate their identification. We also describe the male of M. bruchiana for the first time and associate males with females of both species.  相似文献

Maternally inherited bacteria that kill male but not female hosts during embryogenesis occur in a number of aphidophagous coccinellids. Work on EnglishAdalia bipunctata (L.), has shown the causative agent of male-killing to be a member of the bacterial genusRickettsia. In coccinellids, the primary advantage of male-killing behaviour to the bacterium has been identified. Following male death, resource reallocation occurs through sibling egg cannibalism: female neonate larvae of infected mothers gain a significant survival advantage by eating the soma of their dead male siblings. In addition, daughters of infected females suffer a reduced risk of cannibalism as a result of the lower egg hatch rate in infected clutches. Predictions as to which species of coccinellid are liable to harbour male-killers may be made on the basis of the selective advantages of male-killing identified inA. bipunctata. Species which may harbour male-killers are likely to lay eggs in clutches, show sibling egg cannibalism, and exhibit high neonate mortality. Recent work has shown male-killing to occur in a number of other aphidophagous coccinellids with the predicted characteristics. Molecular genetic analysis has putatively identified three bacterial symbionts associated with male-killing, coming from three phylogenetically distant bacterial taxa. We therefore suggest that within coccinellids that possess these features, male-killing may evolve in a taxonomically diverse range of inherited bacteria. The implications of the presence of male-killing bacteria on the population demography of host coccinellids, and on host mitochondrial DNA variability are discussed. The aphidophagous coccinellids are proposed as a model system for studying the evolution and consequences of infection with male-killers.  相似文献

Host-parasite systems have often evolved over time, such that infection dynamics may become greatly modified from the time of initial contact of the host with the parasite. Biological invasions may be useful to clarify processes in the initial contact of hosts with parasites, and allow us to compare parasite uptake between the ancestral (coevolved) host and novel (noncoevolved) hosts. Cane toads (Bufo marinus) are spreading rapidly through tropical Australia, carrying with them a nematode lungworm (Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala) congeneric with those found in Australian frogs. We investigated the dynamics of infections of the toad parasite by conducting histologic examinations of cane toads and three native Australian frogs (Litoria dahlii, Litoria nasuta, and Opisthodon ornatus) at 2, 6, and 10 days after experimental exposure to the toad lungworm. More worms were found in toads than in frogs, especially at longer periods postexposure. In toads, the infective larvae entered the skin and muscles within 2 days postexposure, passed into the coelom in 6 days, and reached the lungs at 10 days. In frogs, larvae were found in many organs rather than migrating to consistent target tissues; a few larvae reached the lungs of L. dahlii. Migratory larvae caused increasing inflammation (primarily granulomatous admixed with granulocytes then lymphocytes) through time, especially in frogs. Evolution has resulted in an enhanced ability of the lungworm to locate the target organ (the lungs) of the toad, and an increase in rates of parasite survival within this host.  相似文献

The behaviour of female Necrophorus vespilloides whose clutches had been removed partially or completely was tested in laboratory experiments. If the reproductive activities can proceed without disturbances, the first larvae reach the carcass 56 h after the start of egg-laying. If no larvae come to the carcass, all females resume egg-laying within five days. The second clutch (‘replacement clutch’) is, on average, smaller than the first one. If the eggs from the replacement clutches are also removed, the females produce new clutches until no more carrion is available. One larva coming to the carcass prevents production of replacement clutches with 20 % of the females. 5 and 10 larvae prevent a higher proportion of females from producing new clutches; the reaction of the female depends on the size of the carcass offered and on the number of larvae present on the carcass. There are two behavioural options for the females with respect to time when egg-laying is resumed. Some females produce a replacement clutch while the larvae are still at the carcass; other females wait until the larvae leave the carcass. In the presence of only a few larvae at the carcass most females show both forms of behaviour under experimental conditions.  相似文献

In Lepidoptera, host plant selection is first conditioned by oviposition site preference of adult females followed by feeding site preference of larvae. Dietary experience to plant volatile cues can induce larval and adult host plant preference. We investigated how the parent’s and self-experience induce host preference in adult females and larvae of three lepidopteran stem borer species with different host plant ranges, namely the polyphagous Sesamia nonagrioides, the oligophagous Busseola fusca and the monophagous Busseola nairobica, and whether this induction can be linked to a neurophysiological phenotypic plasticity. The three species were conditioned to artificial diet enriched with vanillin from the neonate larvae to the adult stage during two generations. Thereafter, two-choice tests on both larvae and adults using a Y-tube olfactometer and electrophysiological (electroantennography [EAG] recordings) experiments on adults were carried out. In the polyphagous species, the induction of preference for a new olfactory cue (vanillin) by females and 3rd instar larvae was determined by parents’ and self-experiences, without any modification of the sensitivity of the females antennae. No preference induction was found in the oligophagous and monophagous species. Our results suggest that lepidopteran stem borers may acquire preferences for new olfactory cues from the larval to the adult stage as described by Hopkins’ host selection principle (HHSP), neo-Hopkins’ principle, and the concept of ‘chemical legacy.’  相似文献

Temperature sensation guides animals to avoid temperature extremes and to seek their optimal temperatures. The larval stage of Drosophila development has a dramatic effect on temperature preference. While early-stage Drosophila larvae pursue a warm temperature, late-stage larvae seek a significantly lower temperature. Previous studies suggest that this transition depends on multiple rhodopsins at the late larval stage. Here, we show that early-stage larvae, in which dorsal organ cool cells (DOCCs) are functionally blocked, exhibit similar cool preference to that of wild type late-stage larvae. The molecular thermoreceptors in DOCCs are formed by three members of the Ionotropic Receptor (IR) family, IR21a, IR93a, and IR25a. Early-stage larvae of each Ir mutant pursue a cool temperature, similar to that of wild type late-stage larvae. At the late larval stage, DOCCs express decreased IR proteins and exhibit reduced cool responses. Importantly, late-stage larvae that overexpress IR21a, IR93a, and IR25a in DOCCs exhibit similar warm preference to that of wild type early-stage larvae. These data suggest that IR21a, IR93a, and IR25a in DOCCs navigate early-stage larvae to avoid cool temperatures and the reduction of these IR proteins in DOCCs results in animals remaining in cool regions during the late larval stage. Together with previous studies, we conclude that multiple temperature-sensing systems are regulated for the transition of temperature preference in fruit fly larvae.  相似文献

The chemosensory responses of the fry of the Midas cichlid, Cichlasoma citrinellum (Pisces: Cichlidae), were tested in a Y-maze during their first 11 days of free-swimming. Fry preferred all conspecific females to blank water but did not distinguish between their own mother, another mother or a non-parental, adult female. Fry preferred females to males. Similar results were obtained for males. Fry preferred their siblings and (unrelated) juveniles to blank water. However, while they failed to show a preference between siblings and their mother, they preferred their mother to juveniles. Fry were able to any of three heterospecifics (C. managuense, C. nigrofasciatum and the allopatric Sarotherodon mossambicus). The chemosensory responses demonstrated in the Y-maze are hypothesized to aid the fry in staying near the centre of the guarded territory and away from predators, particularly under murky or nocturnal conditions.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, the development of larvae of the sand dollar Scaphechinus mirabilis (Agassiz) took 28.5–29 days from fertilization to settling and the end of metamorphosis at a temperature 20°C and salinity 32.2–32.6‰ The cleavage divisions were completed in 12 hours after fertilization (AF) by the release of free swimming ciliary blastula from the egg membrane. The larvae attained pluteus I stage with one pair of arms at an age of 40 hours. In 4.5–5 days the pluteus II stage with three pairs of arms, and in 9 days the pluteus III stage with four pairs of arms were formed. On the 20–21st day AF the larvae developed a vestibule, in which the adult skeleton rudiments, spicules, plates and pedicellariae were formed on the 26–27th day AF. The size of the larvae at an age of 22.5 days was 1064.3 ± 44.7 μm. The settling of larvae was recorded on the 28–29th day of development. Most of the larvae completed their metamorphosis in 4.5–5 hours after settling.  相似文献

Earlé, R. A. 1989. Breeding biology of the Redbreasted Swallow Hirundo semirufa. Ostrich 60: 13–21.

The two races of the Redbreasted Swallow Hirundo semirufa seem to have separate breeding seasons with the northern race H. s. gordoni breeding April-July, while most records for the nominate race fall in October-February. All nests studied were in concrete culverts less than 1 m high. Eggs laid in second clutches by individual females weighed significantly less than eggs laid in first clutches. Eggs hatched on average 16,2 days after incubation started or 18–21 days after the eggs were laid. Only females incubated. Chicks fledged 23–25 days after hatching and reached a maximum body mass of about 31,5 g on day 18 before a steady decline in mass until fledging. Most nesting failures resulted from infertile eggs or starvation of young in the nest (16,2% of all young starved). Overall breeding success was 60,6%. In all, 81,8% of first clutches produced fledglings but only 44,4% of second clutches. Over a three year period 4,9 young were produced per pair breeding in the area (1,6 young/pair/breeding season).  相似文献

Rice fields provide major habitats for lentic aquatic insects including the giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) in Japan. Previous researchers have emphasized that conserving populations of the frogs, Hyla japonicus and Rana nigromaculata, is very important for preserving K. deyrolli because these frogs were found to be a major component of the diet of K. deyrolli adults. However, these previous studies were carried out in rice fields with no loaches, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, which were probably been inhabited by loaches in the past. A series of field surveys and laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the dietary preference of K. deyrolli adults for loaches, frogs, and aquatic insects; the reproductive effects of consuming these foods; and their protein content. In the rice fields, K. deyrolli adults ate loaches when they were available. When the three prey species (frog: R. nigromaculata, loach: M. anguillicaudatus, and dragonfly: Orthetrum albistylum speciosum) were supplied in laboratory conditions, K. deyrolli adults ate more loaches than frogs or dragonflies. In addition, K. deyrolli adults provided with loaches or frogs laid more egg masses within the limited breeding season than when provided with dragonflies. The edible parts of the loach bodies were the largest of the three prey types. It is possible that K. deyrolli adults have been forced to eat frogs due to reductions in the population density of loaches because modern rice cultivation obstructs loach migration routes and reduces their spawning grounds.  相似文献

1. Larval success was compared when one, two, or three egg clutches were laid in kumquat fruits (≈ 10 ml in volume) either successively on the same day or at the rate of one clutch per day. 2. Increased clutch density was associated with a significant decrease in larval survival rate and non‐significant decreases in larval growth rate and pupal mass. 3. Larval and pupal parameters showed significantly larger variance when clutches were laid on successive days than on the same day, suggesting a competitive advantage for older larvae over younger larvae. 4. The results suggest that, in small fruit, reduced fitness due to larval competition may act against possible fitness benefits due to social facilitation among adult females, hence reducing the likelihood of non‐linear population dynamics caused by processes such as the Allee effect.  相似文献

Settlement-stage larvae of the coral reef fishes Ostorhinchus doederleini (Apogonidae) and Pomacentrus coelestis (Pomacentridae) prefer the odor of their settlement reef to that of other nearby reefs. It was unknown whether these olfactory preferences are temporally stable or the result of recent olfactory experience. Ostorhinchus doederleini and P. coelestis larvae were held in aquaria and exposed to water from either their settlement reef or a neighboring reef for 5–9 days and their olfactory preference was tested. We show that exposure to water from another reef did not influence olfactory preference. Ostorhinchus doederleini olfactory preference declined slightly over time whereas P. coelestis preference was gradually lost after 2–3 days in captivity. Neither species switched their preference to the new reef odor. While we cannot determine conclusively the time window of odor learning, imprinting at or shortly after birth is logical and has been demonstrated in other fish species.  相似文献

Investigations into the feeding of the early stages of fishes can provide insights into processes influencing recruitment. In this study, we examined ontogenetic changes in morphology and feeding behaviour of two native Australian freshwater species, Murray cod, Maccullochella peelii peelii, and golden perch, Macquaria ambigua, and the alien species, common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Murray cod free embryos are large and well developed at the onset of feeding, whereas the other two species begin exogenous feeding much younger and are smaller and less-developed. Carp commence exogenous feeding 3 days earlier than golden perch, and show more advanced development of the eyes and ingestive apparatus. We conducted feeding experiments, presenting larvae of the three species with a standardised prey mix (comprising equal numbers of small calanoid copepods, large calanoid copepods, small Daphnia, and large Daphnia). Larvae of most tested ages and species showed a preference for mid-sized prey (300–500 μm wide). This was true even when their gapes substantially exceeded the largest prey offered. Daphnia were consumed more than similar-sized copepods. The results of this study suggest that survival through their larval period will be threatened in all three species if catchable prey <500 μm in width are not available throughout such time. They also suggest that interspecific competition for prey may occur, especially when larvae are very young. The precocious development of structures involved in feeding and the extended transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding of early carp larvae are likely to have contributed to the success of this species since its introduction to Australia.  相似文献

Lack ( 1967 ) proposed that clutch size in species with precocial young was determined by nutrients available to females at the time of egg formation; since then others have suggested that regulation of clutch size in these species may be more complex. We tested whether incubation limitation contributes to ultimate constraints on maximal clutch size in Black Brent Geese (Black Brant) Branta bernicla nigricans. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between clutch size and duration of the nesting period (i.e. days between nest initiation and the first pipped egg) and the number of goslings leaving the nest. We used experimental clutch manipulations to assess these questions because they allowed us to create clutches that were larger than the typical maximum of five eggs in this species. We found that the per‐capita probability of egg success (i.e. the probability an egg hatched and the gosling left the nest) declined from 0.81 for two‐egg clutches to 0.50 for seven‐egg clutches. As a result of declining egg success, clutches containing more than five eggs produced, at best, only marginally more offspring. Manipulating clutch size at the beginning of incubation had no effect on the duration of the nesting period, but the nesting period increased with the number of eggs a female laid naturally prior to manipulation, from 25.4 days (95% CI 25.1–25.7) for three‐egg clutches to 27.7 days (95% CI 27.3–28.1) for six‐egg clutches. This delay in hatching may result in reduced gosling growth rates due to declining forage quality during the brood rearing period. Our results suggest that the strong right truncation of Brent clutches, which results in few clutches greater than five, is partially explained by the declining incubation capacity of females as clutch size increases and a delay in hatching with each additional egg laid. As a result, females laying clutches with more than five eggs would typically gain little fitness benefit above that associated with a five‐egg clutch.  相似文献

Dalgliesh R. J. and Stewart N. P. 1979. Observations on the morphology and infectivity for cattle of Babesia bovis parasites in unfed Boophilus microplus larvae after incubation at various temperatures. International Journal for Parasitology9: 115–120. The temperature of incubation of unfed Boophilus microplus larvae infected with Babesia bovis influenced the morphology and infectivity of the Babesia within the tick. Incubation at 37°C for 1–3 days stimulated the development of parasites morphologically similar to those usually observed in fed larvae harvested from cattle; similar forms appeared more slowly in larvae incubated at 31°C or 25°C. Extracts prepared from larvae after incubation at 37°C for 3–5 days or 30°C for 8 days were consistently infective for cattle. Prior storage of larvae at 14°C for up to 28 days enhanced the development of infectivity at 37°C; infectivity could still be produced after 65 days storage at 14°C but not after 76 days. Larvae released on a host transmitted B. bovis sooner if they had been incubated at 37°C for 4 days. It was concluded that the development of B. bovis to an infective stage in B. microplus is temperature dependent and does not require the stimulus of feeding by the host.  相似文献

Muscular dystrophies are often caused by genetic alterations in the dystrophin-dystroglycan complex or its extracellular ligands. These structures are associated with the cell membrane and provide mechanical links between the cytoskeleton and the matrix. Mechanical stress is considered a pathological mechanism and muscle immobilization has been shown to be beneficial in some mouse models of muscular dystrophy. The zebrafish enables novel and less complex models to examine the effects of extended immobilization or muscle relaxation in vivo in different dystrophy models. We have examined effects of immobilization in larvae from two zebrafish strains with muscular dystrophy, the Sapje dystrophin-deficient and the Candyfloss laminin α2-chain-deficient strains. Larvae (4 days post fertilization, dpf) of both mutants have significantly lower active force in vitro, alterations in the muscle structure with gaps between muscle fibers and altered birefringence patterns compared to their normal siblings. Complete immobilization (18 hrs to 4 dpf) was achieved using a small molecular inhibitor of actin-myosin interaction (BTS, 50 μM). This treatment resulted in a significantly weaker active contraction at 4 dpf in both mutated larvae and normal siblings, most likely reflecting a general effect of immobilization on myofibrillogenesis. The immobilization also significantly reduced the structural damage in the mutated strains, showing that muscle activity is an important pathological mechanism. Following one-day washout of BTS, muscle tension partly recovered in the Candyfloss siblings and caused structural damage in these mutants, indicating activity-induced muscle recovery and damage, respectively.  相似文献

To determine the effects of diet on the growth rate of Nyctiphanes australis (Euphausiacea), metanauplii were reared to mature adults in the laboratory. Sibships (siblings from the same mother) were raised on different food items collected from the field and cultured in the laboratory. A sibship was divided at the calyptopis stage and 50% of the siblings were fed one of three experimental diets (Thalassiosira, Heterocapsa, or Phaeocystis); the balance of the siblings were fed a control diet of Tetraselmis chuii and Artemia larvae. The growth rate of siblings was not altered by the different diets. Siblings developed asynchronously, however, from egg to adult. Some animals were always at a more advanced developmental phase and by day 100, up to 25% larger than their siblings (p<0.001). A possible implication of this result is that the larval growth of N. australis is strongly influenced by genotype.  相似文献

Cynoglossus abbreviatus spawns from mid-March to mid-April in the Sea of Shimabara in Kyushu. During the spawning season ovarian maturation was successfully induced by injection of the pituitary homogenate ofHypophthalmichthys molitrix. The dose of the aceton-dried pituitary homogenate was 6.5 mg/kg body weight ofC. abbreviatus. It took about 2 days for ovulation after injection at a water temperature of 14 to 16°C. Artificial fertilizations were accomplished on March 29, 1974 and again on April 7, 1984, using the females matured by hormone injection in the latter case only. The larvae were reared on the rotifers,Artemia nauplii,Tigriopus japonicus and copepods collected from the sea over a period of 113 days in 1974 and 58 days in 1984. The eggs were pelagic, spherical, 1.19–1.23 mm in diameter and had 30–50 oilglobules of 0.068–0.095 mm in diameter, and the perivitelline space was narrow. The incubation period was 90–98 hours at a water temperature of 14 to 16°C. The newly hatched larvae were 3.18–3.45 mm TL and had 61–64 myomeres. The larvae had many melanophores and xanthophores on the body, forming three bands on the caudal region, but were lacking chromatophores on the finfolds. The yolk was completely absorbed when the larvae attained a size of 4.7–5.6 mm TL 8 days after hatching. A single elongated dosai fin ray developed on the head in the 8-day old larvae. The ray was reduced in size as long as the other rays 1 or 2 days after metamorphosis. The rudiment of pectoral fins were found on the both sides of the body in the 2-day old larvae, but two of them disappeared after metamorphosis. A pelvic fin first appeared as a ventral bud just anterior to the gut in the larva of 8.39 mm TL. The full count of 4 rays was observed on the larva of 10.83 mm TL. Metamorphosis began 22 days after hatching when the larvae were 11.20 mm TL. The right eye began to shift the left side of the head at night and reached to the final place after 8.5 hours. It took about 36 hours to complete the metamorphosis, including the eye movement and fusion of the hole in the rostral beak. At the last stage of metamorphosis, the dosal, caudal, anal and ventral fins became confluent. The larvae reached the juvenile stage at a size of 13.5–14.0 mm TL, approximately 28 days after hatchling. The growth of larvae reared in 1974 is expressed by the following equations: Y1 = 3.448 · 1.0507x (8≦X≦28) Y2 = 6.3322 · 1.0275x (28≦X≦75) where Y is the total length (mm) and X is the number of days after hatching. Growth rate changed after metamorphosis.  相似文献
