In some birds, yearling males (subadults) are less brightly coloured than the adult ones. To explain this phenomenon known as delayed plumage maturation (DPM), several hypotheses have recently been proposed. The aim of this paper was to test predictions of status signal hypothesis (SSH). This hypothesis claims that the adults less frequently attack dull coloured subadult males, and consequently DPM facilitates survival of subadults during the first breeding season. The experiments were performed in two habitats in the Prague suburbs: a housing estate and garden city. Subadult and adult males of the black redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) were exposed to stuffed dummies of both age categories. Contrary to predictions of SSH, brown (subadult like) coloration of the dummy had no suppressive effect on defensive behaviour of the resident males. On the other hand, subadult males were more active in vocal territorial defence such as singing and producing snarl and whistle sounds during the experiments. The defenders of smaller territories generally behaved more aggressively than defenders of large territories in habitat of garden city, and especially adult males responded more aggressively against dummies in this habitat. In a housing estate, a habitat of evenly distributed resources (i.e. vertical surfaces), the birds tended to observe the dummy prior to attack it directly.  相似文献

We studied the morphology of American mink Neovison vison in five out of the six introduced populations in Spain. The spatial and temporal variation of body weight (BW), body length (BL), tail length, hind-foot length and ear length were analysed. Temporal trends in BW and BL in relation to years since mink introduction were also analyzed. In addition, we tested the effect of sex, age (juvenile, subadult and adult) and age–sex interaction, on each parameter. Morphological parameters differed between populations, illustrating the high variability of body size of American mink in different environments, and the phenotypic plasticity of the species. Annual variations were synchronized between populations, suggesting a large-scale effect on all of them. BW and BL showed a decreasing trend in both males and females in relation to years since introduction. This decrease may be related to mink's diet. Differences in sex and age were found, pointing to sexual dimorphism in adults, subadults and juveniles. The dimorphism in non-adult individuals suggests that subadult males may have a competitive advantage from subadult females in feeding and/or hunting on bigger prey from an early age (resource partitioning hypothesis).  相似文献

Summary In a peak population of Microtus townsendii, adults and subadults dispersed during the spring decline, and subadults and juveniles dispersed during the summer and fall. Voles born in the spring dispersed before the start of the next year's breeding season, whereas fall-born voles dispersed during the next year's breeding season. Voles under 50 g, when they dispersed, had faster growth rates than similar-sized residents, but voles over 59 g, when they dispersed, had slower growth rates than similar-sized residents. Dispersing and resident voles 50–59 g had no consistent trend in growth rates.  相似文献

In addition to sexual segregation, many social ungulates show varying degrees of age segregation, especially among males. We investigated factors affecting group choice by subadult male bighorn sheep, using census data collected between 1982 and 1998 in a marked population. We examined whether group composition varied with population size and structure. Changes in total population size were correlated with the number of yearling males and yearling females, but not with the size of other sex-age classes. In years of high population size, female groups were larger than in years of low population size, while mixed sex-age and subadult groups showed a nonsignificant trend in the same direction. Typical group sizes of bachelor groups and the occurrence of mixed or bachelor groups were not affected by population size. When there were few subadult males in the population, groups of subadult males were less frequent than in years with many subadult males in the population, but the typical group size did not change. Subadult males were rarely seen in peer groups, and switched from female groups in spring to bachelor groups in autumn. An individual's choice of group type is affected by its body mass, but also by the availability of enough potential group mates to provide sufficient predator-detection efficiency.  相似文献

European black redstarts, Phoenicurus ochruros, vigorously defend all-purpose territories and exhibit delayed plumage maturation, most subadult males looking exactly female-like in their first breeding season. We tested the hypotheses that such dull subadult male plumages are beneficial in order to reduce aggression of adult males either by deception or by honest signalling of subordinance status, and that, in turn, conspicuous (adult) plumage colorations are able to intimidate contenders because they act as a signal of fighting ability and aggressive motivation. Adult and dull yearling black redstart territory owners were confronted with intruders mimicked by stuffed mounts of either a conspicuous adult or a dull subadult male. Our results do not support the hypotheses tested: dull plumages of young intruders did not reduce aggression from adult territory owners and aggressiveness towards intruders was significantly higher in yearling territory owners as compared with adult owners. Conspicuous intruders did not deter dull territory owners and we found no indications that conspicuous male coloration is a signal of fighting ability or aggressive motivation in this species. Instead, the amount of aggressive response to intruders showed considerable individual variance within age classes regardless of the plumage of the intruder and the status of the owner.  相似文献

Dispersal decisions are often condition-dependent, influenced by the interaction of individual phenotype and environmental conditions. Terrestrial Gastropods are simultaneous hermaphrodites, a reproductive system rarely studied in the context of dispersal. Moreover, the energetic cost of their movement is one of the highest among animals. Despite these features, which make them valuable models to understand the trade-offs between dispersal and other life-history traits, their dispersal strategies have been barely explored. We studied the movements of subadults and adults of the brown garden snail Cornu aspersum in a semi-natural 4-patch network, for 2 months in 2011 (a dry year) and 1 month in 2012 (a wet year). We assessed the effects of life-history stage (subadult/adult) and weather conditions on dispersal propensity and dispersal speed. Snails were more mobile under humid and warm weather, but nearly all individuals left patches when the relative humidity was close to 100 % in 2012. Because such humidity levels are potentially lethal to C. aspersum, we argue these extreme emigration rates might be an emergency escape response to harmful conditions. Despite a theoretically higher cost of movement, we found that subadults emigrated more, and dispersed faster and further, than adults. Thus, and contrary to what was expected, direct costs of movement do not play the main role in shaping dispersal in C. aspersum. Observed differences between subadults and adults in dispersal behaviour are discussed in the context of intraspecific competition, inbreeding avoidance and relative costs of male and female reproduction.  相似文献

Non-maternal infant care in many of the small-bodied New World primate species has been hypothesized by some researchers to be related to the high infant/adult weight ratio found in these species. The spectral tarsier, Tarsius spectrum, an Old World primate, has one of the highest infant/adult weight ratios of any primate, with infants weighing between 20-33% of adult weight at birth. On the basis of the hypothesized relationship between allocare and the infant/adult weight ratio, it is predicted that the spectral tarsier will also exhibit extensive allocaretaking behaviour. The results of this study indicate that although spectral tarsiers show care by male and female subadults as well as adult males, it is extremely limited compared to the extensive allocaretaking behavior observed in New World primate species such as Aotus and Callicebus. Spectral tarsier subadult females provide substantially more allocare to infants than do subadult males or adult males. Female subadults were observed sharing food, transporting, grooming, playing, alarm calling, baby-sitting and maintaining physical contact with infants more than other age/sex classes. Although the amount of allocare exhibited by adult males and subadult males was much less than that exhibited by female subadults, the data suggest that adult and subadult male spectral tarsiers do play a small part in the care and socialization of the infant. Adult males and subadult males were both observed occasionally engaging in allocaretaking behaviors such as grooming and playing, as well as frequently patrolling and defending the territory's boundaries. The results from this study suggest that although a high infant/adult weight ratio may be a prerequisite for selection to favor extensive allocare, it is not a causal factor. Additional research is needed in order to understand better the selective pressures involved and the costs and benefits of providing allocare to subadults and adult male spectral tarsiers.  相似文献

The essential features of mortality and survivorship of bearded vultures Gypaetus barbatus in southern Africa were deduced from age class plumage characteristics. The population consisted of about 204 adult pairs within a breeding range of about 35,000 sq km. Pairs bred every year and produced, on average, about 0·9 young per pair per year. Young birds made up about 37% of the population, subadults 3·5% and adults 60%. About 182 fledged young were recruited to the population each year. The proportion of young birds in the population in different areas was inversely related to the breeding density of adult birds (range 24–47%). Young bird mortality over the four years to subadult age was 87%, the survival rate of adults was 94% and the mean lifespan of birds surviving to adulthood was 21·4 years. This study demonstrates the need to understand the relationship between adult breeding density and young bird numbers in different parts of their range to accurately deduce population dynamics characteristics.

The relationship between externally measured condition (mass x length(-3)) and the mass of internal major organs in the caecilian Gegeneophis ramaswamii is investigated, based on a collection of 67 specimens from three southern Indian localities in the early and mid-monsoon. Condition in juveniles (< 90 mm total length) is higher than in subadults (90-170 mm) and adults (> 170 mm). The relationship between condition and total length is consistent in subadults, but variable in adults, and these differences indicate that the delimitation of these ontogenetic stages has some biological meaning. Adult females have fat bodies which fluctuate in mass, but not in relation to their body size. On average, adult females have heavier fat bodies and lighter gut contents than adult males, but there are no significant differences between subadult males and females. Gravid females are predicted to have a notably greater condition. There is no consistent relationship between condition and any major internal organ, but there is some significant variation among samples grouped by sampling time and locality. More sampling throughout the year is required to clarify the complex relationships between condition and internal organs, and before externally measured condition from ecological studies of living animals can be readily interpreted. However, its utility in helping to differentiate between ontogenic classes may be of immediate use.  相似文献

Models of age-related effects on behavior predict that among short-lived species younger adults are more attractive and attracted to opposite-sex conspecifics than are older adults, whereas the converse is predicted for long-lived species. Although most studies of age-related effects on behavior support these predictions, they are not supported by many studies of scent marking, a behavior used in mate attraction. Over-marking, a form of scent marking, is a tactic used by many terrestrial mammals to convey information about themselves to opposite-sex conspecifics. The present study tested the hypothesis that the age of meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus ; a microtine rodent, affects their over- and scent-marking behaviors when they encounter the marks of opposite-sex conspecifics. Sex differences existed in the over-marking behavior of adult voles among the three different age groups that were tested. Male voles that were 5–7 and 10–12 mo olds over-marked a higher proportion of the marks of females than did 2–3 mo old male voles. Female voles that were 2–3, 5–7, and 10–12 mo old over-marked a similar number of marks deposited by male voles. Overall, the data were not consistent with models predicting the behavior of short-lived animals such as rodents when they encounter the opposite sex. The differences in over-marking displayed by older and younger adult male voles may be associated with life history tradeoffs, the likelihood that they will encounter sexually receptive females, and being selected as mates.  相似文献

Summary The monogamous and protandrous anemonefish,Amphiprion clarkii, utilizes only large host sea anemones as breeding sites. Under conditions of breeding site shortage, an important strategy for unmated fish may be to prepare themselves to enter quickly a breeding site from which a breeding male or female has recently disappeared. There are two types of subadults. Some juveniles become subadult males, which can change either to male or female afterwards, but others become subadult females, which can change only to female. Subadult females seem to acquire female posts more easily than subadult males. We develop an ESS model which evaluates the future reproductive success of subadult females and subadult males and test whether coexistence of subadult males and females can be interpreted as adaptive alternative tactics, using field data from two populations. The model predicts that if mortality does not differ between adult males and females the frequency for juveniles to become subadult females should be equal to the proportion of breeding post acquisition by subadult females among that by all subadults. The model also predicts that if mortality does not differ between subadult males and females, nor in adults, the frequency of subadult females among all subadults should be equal to the proportion of post acquisition. The model, with data from two study sites, suggests that alternative life-history pathways found inA. clarkii have evolved through adaptive tactics of breeding post acquisition.  相似文献

In this work we studied the morphology of an invasive population of American mink Mustela vison in Catalonia, Mediterranean Spain. Body weight, body length, tail length, hindfoot length and ear length were measured for four age–sex classes: subadult male (n = 17), subadult female (n = 16), adult male (n = 36) and adult female (n = 10). A General Linear Mixed Model was used to test the effect of year, sex, age and age–sex interaction, on each parameter. The morphological results differed from those of other introduced populations because of their different origin and their adaptation to different environments. Differences in sex and age were found, pointing to sexual dimorphism both in adults and subadults. The degree of dimorphism was lower than that of other populations, probably because of a lack of trophic niche separation between male and female mink because in the study area only small prey animals were available.  相似文献

The mating system and mate choice of Tengmalm's Owls were studied in relation to population fluctuations of the staple food (voles) for seven years in western Finland. Three age classes of owls were differentiated: first-year, second-year and older owls. Despite a surplus of males, 11 % of them showed simultaneous bigyny in peak vole years. The mean distance between primary and secondary nests was 1158 m, and usually there was a free nest-box between the two nests. Because primary nests produced more fledglings than secondary ones and secondary nests produced fewer fledglings than simultaneous or even eight-days-later monogamous nests, this bigyny could be best explained by the 'deception' hypothesis.
In successive biandry, females deserted their first brood when young were still in the nest, thereby transferring the burden of raising the young to their males. The tendency of assortative mating by age (more yearling x yearling and + 2-year-old ×+ 2-year-old pairs than expected by chance) showed that females chose older males when these were available.  相似文献

Infant carrying is common in primates and may be the second most costly activity related to reproduction, after lactation. In cooperative breeding groups of callitrichids, all group members carry and care for twin infants. Previous studies have described the costs of infant carrying in terms of body mass loss and reduced locomotor capability. However, infant carrying may also influence travel speed, an important potential cost because slower speed may handicap foraging, energetic budgets, and predator avoidance. We evaluated the impact of infant carrying on the travel speed of 27 adult and 9 subadult cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) of both sexes in large outdoor enclosures. We compared carrier speed to speed when not carrying during the 10 weeks after nine births. Subadult tamarins, which have a lower body mass than adults do, moved faster than adults when not carrying. We found no difference between the mean speeds of subadults and adults while carrying. However, the speed of carriers decreased as infant mass increased, and the slope of this negative relationship was more pronounced in subadult carriers. For every 80 g of extra mass load (the body mass of newborn twins), adults reduced their speed by 6 % and subadults by 19 % relative to noncarrying speed. We also observed a reduction in speed while carrying two infants in adult tamarins as carrying time increased. Our results contribute to an understanding of the costs of infant carrying, and serve to emphasize the importance of cooperative breeding systems in coping with these costs.  相似文献

Methods for estimating body mass from the human skeleton are often required for research in biological or forensic anthropology. There are currently only two methods for estimating body mass in subadults: the width of the distal femur metaphysis is useful for individuals 1–12 years of age and the femoral head is useful for older subadults. This article provides age‐structured formulas for estimating subadult body mass using midshaft femur cross‐sectional geometry (polar second moments of area). The formulas were developed using data from the Denver Growth Study and their accuracy was examined using an independent sample from Franklin County, Ohio. Body mass estimates from the midshaft were compared with estimates from the width of the distal metaphysis of the femur. Results indicate that accuracy and bias of estimates from the midshaft and the distal end of the femur are similar for this contemporary cadaver sample. While clinical research has demonstrated that body mass is one principle factor shaping cross‐sectional geometry of the subadult midshaft femur, clearly other biomechanical forces, such as activity level, also play a role. Thus formulas for estimating body mass from femoral measurements should be tested on subadult populations from diverse ecological and cultural circumstances to better understand the relationship between body mass, activity, diet, and morphology during ontogeny. Recent work has shown that a high fluoride (F) intake in rodents leads to histopathologic changes in the germinal epithelium of testes and to zinc deficiency in the testis and several other organs. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether an elevation of testicular zinc concentration during fluoride exposure could protect the testes of bank vole from damage. The elevation of testicular zinc was achieved by exposing the bank voles to a long photoperiod (16 hr light/8 hr dark). The zinc concentration in the testes of bank voles kept under the long photoperiod was 38% higher than that in animals exposed to a moderate photoperiod (12 hr light/12 hr dark). Fluoride exposure (200 μg F/ml drinking water) during 4 months decreased additionally p > 0.05 zinc concentration in the testes of bank voles kept under the moderate photoperiod. The same animals also exhibited histopathologic changes in the germinal epithelium. By contrast, these disturbances were not observed in animals maintained in the long photoperiod. This experiment suggests that an increase in testicular zinc due to a long photoperiod prevents seminiferous tubules from a damage induced by fluoride in bank voles. The protective effects of zinc (or a long photoperiod) did not appear to be related to a decrease in testicular fluoride accumulation or lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

The two semi-aquatic shrew species Neomys fodiens and Neomys anomalus are very similar in their ecology and morphology. Thus, they tend to be strong competitors for resources when they occur syntopically in habitats. We analysed the microhabitat selection of both species based on 14 parameters at two study sites in western Saxony (Germany). At the first study site, the results show segregation into different preferred microhabitats. In comparison to N. fodiens, N. anomalus occurred in low distance to the oxbow lake at places with denser herbal cover. Thus, we verified the hypothesis of Rychlik (Acta Theriologica 42:351-388 1997) who assumed differences in microhabitat niches for both shrew species to avoid competition. Furthermore, there was a spatial segregation within N. fodiens depending on their age. While adults occurred close to the water at areas with sparse herb layer, the juveniles and subadults were predominantly captured in some distance to the stream at denser vegetation. We assume that this is the result of different microhabitat preferences in N. fodiens depending on age and not a result of intraspecific antagonism. Moreover, the possibility to build subsurface burrows (and as an equivalent to this, crevice systems resulting of bank fixation with large stones) seems to be the main limiting factor for the occurrence of N. fodiens at the other surveyed site. At this site, no differences in microhabitats were visible between the age classes of N. fodiens.  相似文献

Which factors select for long juvenile periods in some species is not well understood. One potential reason to delay the onset of reproduction is slow food acquisition rates, either due to competition (part of the ecological risk avoidance hypothesis), or due to a decreased foraging efficiency (a version of the needing to learn hypothesis). Capuchins provide a useful genus to test the needing to learn hypothesis because they are known for having long juvenile periods and a difficult-to-acquire diet. Generalized, linear, mixed models with data from 609 fruit forage focal follows on 49, habituated, wild Cebus capucinus were used to test two predictions from the needing-to-learn hypothesis as it applies to fruit foraging skills: 1) capuchin monkeys do not achieve adult foraging return rates for difficult-to-acquire fruits before late in the juvenile period; and 2) variance in return rates for these fruits is at least partially associated with differences in foraging skill. In support of the first prediction, adults, compared with all younger age classes, had significantly higher foraging return rates when foraging for fruits that were ranked as difficult-to-acquire (return rates relative to adults: 0.30–0.41, p-value range 0.008–0.016), indicating that the individuals in the group who have the most foraging experience also achieve the highest return rates. In contrast, and in support of the second prediction, there were no significant differences between age classes for fruits that were ranked as easy to acquire (return rates relative to adults: 0.97–1.42, p-value range 0.086–0.896), indicating that strength and/or skill are likely to affect return rates. In addition, fruits that were difficult to acquire were foraged at nearly identical rates by adult males and significantly smaller (and presumably weaker) adult females (males relative to females: 1.01, p = 0.978), while subadult females had much lower foraging efficiency than the similarly-sized but more experienced adult females (subadults relative to adults: 0.34, p = 0.052), indicating that skill, specifically, is likely to have an effect on return rates. These results are consistent with the needing to learn hypothesis and indicate that long juvenile periods in capuchins may be the result of selection for more time to learn foraging skills for difficult-to-acquire fruits.  相似文献

I provide an analysis of a simplified life history model for green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris, based on published and recent estimates of reproduction and growth rates and survival rates from life history theory. The deterministic life cycle models serve as a tool for qualitative analysis of the impacts of perturbations on green sturgeon, including harvest regulations based on minimum and maximum size limits (“slot limits”). Elasticity analysis of models with two alternative age–length relationships give similar results, with a high sensitivity of population growth rate to changes in the survival rate of subadult and adult fish. A dramatic increase in the survival of young of the year sturgeon or annual egg production is required to compensate for relatively low levels of fishing mortality. Peak reproductive values occur from ages 25 to 40. An increase or decrease in the maximum and minimum size limits can have a profound effect on the elasticity of population growth to changes in the annual survival rate of age classes specified by the slot, due to changes in the number of age classes of subadults and adults that are available for harvest. This analysis provides managers with a simple tool to assess the relative impacts of alternative harvest regulations. In general, green sturgeon follow life history patterns similar to other sturgeon, but species-specific demographic information is needed to produce more complex assessment and viability analysis models.  相似文献
