The aerial threshold visual angle of mink rose from 15.4 min at 10 cm stimulus distance to 19.1 min at 90 cm and the underwater angle varied from 32.7 min at 10 cm to 46.6 min at 90 cm, all at 34 mL luminance. At constant 30 cm stimulus distance, the aerial angle rose from 15 min at 34 mL to 51.7 min at 0.012 mL, the underwater angle from 31.4 min at 34 mL to 95 min at 0.012 mL, the aerial and underwater data forming similar curves. If mink hunt in water at somewhat higher light levels than in air they can obtain equal acuities in the two media.  相似文献

Orienting responses by mink during aerial and underwater visual discrimination tests were most frequent when the grating lines subtended angles at the eye near the visual threshold angle. Factorial analysis showed that in air and in water at ranges from 10 to 90 cm most responses occurred at 30 cm discrimination distance and more occurred to marginally supra-threshold than to marginally sub-threshold stimuli. Between media, more responses occurred in air than in water. At longer ranges the mink oriented less readily than at 30 cm but if orienting occurred better discrimination followed than if the mink did not orient.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine and validate prerequisites for applying a cognitive (judgement) bias approach to assessing welfare in farmed mink (Neovison vison). We investigated discrimination ability and associative learning ability using auditory cues. The mink (n = 15 females) were divided into two groups (High, n = 8; Low, n = 7, representing the frequency of the tone they were habituated to, 18 and 2 kHz respectively) and were tested using a habituation–dishabituation procedure in experiment 1. In experiment 2 one auditory stimulus was followed by an inter-trial-interval (safe/neutral situation), whereas another auditory stimulus was followed by an aversive stimulus (air blow) before the inter-trial-interval (danger situation). We observed behaviour including latencies to show a response during both experiments. The High mink showed significant habituation in experiment 1 but the Low mink only showed habituation in experiment 2. Regardless of the frequency used (2 and 18 kHz), cues predicting the danger situation initially elicited slower responses compared to those predicting the safe situation but quickly became faster. Using auditory cues as discrimination stimuli for female farmed mink in a judgement bias approach would thus appear to be feasible. However several specific issues are to be considered in order to successfully adapt a cognitive bias approach to mink, and these are discussed.  相似文献

Pitvipers (Crotalinae) and boid snakes (Boidae) possess highly sensitive infrared (IR) receptors. The ability of these snakes to image IR radiation allows the assessment of the direction and distance of an IR source (such as warm-blooded prey) in the absence of visual cues. The aim of this study was to determine the behavioural threshold of snakes to an IR stimulus. A moving IR source of constant size and temperature was presented to rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) at various distances (10–160 cm) from their snout. The snakes’ responses were quantified by measuring distinct behavioural changes during stimulus presentation (head jerks, head fixed, freezing, rattling and tongue-flicking). The results revealed that C. atrox can detect an artificial IR stimulus resembling a mouse in temperature and size up to a distance of 100 cm, which corresponds to a radiation density of 3.35 × 10−3 mW/cm2. These behavioural results reveal a 3.2 times higher sensitivity to IR radiation than earlier electrophysiological investigations.  相似文献

Diverging observations on secondary hyperalgesia to heat stimuli have been reported in the literature. No studies have investigated the importance of heat stimulus intensity and duration for the assessment of secondary heat hyperalgesia. The present study was designed to investigate systematically (1) if pain sensitivity to radiant heat stimuli (focused Xenon light) is altered in the area of secondary punctuate hyperalgesia induced by intradermal injection of capsaicin and (2) if heat stimulus duration and intensity had an influence on the ability to detect secondary heat hyperalgesia.

Pain ratings to radiant heat stimuli from a focused xenon lamp were assessed within the area of secondary punctuate hyperalgesia in fifteen volunteers before and after intradermal injection of capsaicin. The stimulus conditions were systematically varied between three intensity levels (0.8, 1.0 and 1.2?×?heat pain threshold (PT)) and four duration steps (200, 350, 500 and 750?ms). The present study shows that long duration (350–750?ms) and low intensity (0.8 and 1.0 ×?PT) radiant heat stimuli were adequate to detect secondary heat hyperalgesia.  相似文献

The microbiology of moist barley storage in unsealed silos   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The microflora of moist barley grain and whole-crop barley silage stored in top-unloading, unsealed concrete-staved silos on six farms in England depended on the initial water content of the grain (23–58%), method of covering the grain, and the rate at which it was unloaded. Fungi and actinomycetes were fewest when the initial water content was more than 30%, and the grain was covered first with a layer of wilted grass, and then a plastic sheet. During unloading, the uppermost layer of grain remained in good condition provided 7.5 cm was removed daily. With an inefficient top-seal, the top grain heated and became mouldy, as it also did when unloading was slow. As the rate of unloading slowed, heating increased, and a characteristic succession of fungi and actinomycetes developed. With unloading at 7.5 cm/day or more, only yeasts, chiefly Endomycopsis chodatii Wickerham and Hansenula anomala (Hansen) H. & P. Sydow, were abundant, but at slightly slower rates of unloading Penicillium spp. also became common. Both these groups became less common as unloading was slowed further and were replaced, first by Absidia spp. and Mucor pusillus Lindt, then Aspergillus fumigatus Fres., Humicola lanuginosa (Griffon & Maublanc) Bunce, Micropolyspora faeni Cross, Maciver & Lacey, and Thermoactinomyces vulgaris Tsiklinsky as the heating increased. The number of spores (including bacterial cells) that could be removed from samples by blowing air ranged from 0.4–428 times 106/g dry weight of grain. Whole-crop barley silage contained 2.9–132 times 106spores/g dry weight. Similar species were isolated from whole-crop silage as from grain. Little moulding occurred deeper than 30 cm below surface of the grain. Concentrations of airborne spores were estimated periodically during two seasons. There were always more airborne spores than is usual in outdoor air. Without disturbance the silos contained 106-107 spores/m3 air, but when mouldy grain was unloaded concentrations increased to a maximum of 2860times106 spores/m3 air; more than half of these were bacteria and actinomycetes and a quarter Aspergillus flavus Link. Potentially pathogenic fungi and actinomycetes were frequent, particularly when they also occurred in the grain or capping materials for spontaneous heating. Some probably survived in dust deposits and were resuspended during unloading. Airborne spores were frequent around the silos when grain was unloaded and rolled. Workers should wear efficient dust respirators at these times and while inside silos.  相似文献

Early growth of barley seedlings supplied with ion-depleted air in a controlled microenvironment was used as the criterion of physiological action in experiments designed to separate electrical field and air ion effects. The essential element in this work was the fact that3H foils, functioning as bias electrodes at applied voltages of 67.5-955 V and providing field strengths of 4.6 V/cm to 90 V/cm will produce 2.7×104–1.7×105 small air ions/cm3 — concentrations sufficient to yield a statistically valid increase in growth rate. In contrast, seedlings exposed to equivalent electrical fields in ion-depleted air exhibited no increase in rate of growth. These results indicate that this particular physiological response is produced by small negative air ions and is not dependent on the accompanying electrical fields.  相似文献

The generation of cytopathic effects by murine leukemia viruses (MLVs) in different cell types correlates with the ability of the virus to induce thymic lymphoma. We showed that the induction of apoptosis in mink epithelial cells by mink cell focus-forming (MCF) MLV infection results in the accumulation of high levels of both unintegrated viral DNA and the envelope precursor polyprotein (gPr80env). Comparisons of envelope protein expression levels of plasmid clones of the env gene of the MCF13 and noncytopathic NZB-9 MLV strains demonstrated that the accumulation of MCF13 gPr80env results in endoplasmic reticulum stress and is sufficient for the induction of apoptosis.  相似文献

A protoplasmic drop isolated from an internodal cell of Nitella became electrically excitable in a solution containing 0.5 mM NaCl, 0.5 mM KNO3, 1mM Ca(NO3)2 and 2mM Mg(NO3)2. A thermodynamic property of the excitable membrane was characterized in terms of tension at the surface of the protoplasmic drop. This was determined by the compression method and/or by the sessile-drop method. The surface tension of the membrane was obtained as a function of the composition of the salts in the external solution, and the time during the formative period of the excitable surface membrane. The results are summarized as follows:
1. 1. The surface of the protoplasmic drop increased with time starting from 0.003 dyne/cm and approached a steady value of about 0.1 dyne/cm within 1 h after the drop was placed in the test solution described above. The membrane became electrically excitable when the surface tension attained the steady value.
2. 2. Increase of concentration of either Na+ or K+ in the solution induced a sudden decrease of the surface tension, which followed a suppression of the excitability. The critical concentration of Na+ or K+ was about 10 mM.
3. 3. The surface tension remained constant at about 0.1 dyne/cm in a Ca2+ concentration ranging between about 0.1 and 10 mM. At this concentration the drop was excitable. Below and above this range of Ca2+ concentration, the surface tension changed sharply with concentration, and the excitability disappeared. At about 0.1 mM Ca2+ concentration a discrete variation of the surface tension was observed.
4. 4. The surface tension of the drop stayed constant at 0.1 dyne/cm in the range between 1 and 10 mM of Mg2+ concentration. Above and below this range of Mg2+ concentration, the surface tension increased sharply with the variation of Mg2+ concentration.
These results indicate that the protoplasmic drop retains its excitability in a limited range of salt composition in the external solution. This implies that the excitable membrane of the drop must be very labile in its structure against external perturbations such as electrical stimulus and/or slight variation of salt composition in the solution.  相似文献

Summary By means of metaphase chromosomes, the genes for mink thymidine kinase (TK) and hypoxanthine-phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) were transferred to mutant mouse cells, LMTK-, A9 (HPRT-) and teratocarcinoma cells, PCC4-aza 1 (HPRT-). Eighteen colonies were isolated from LMTK- (series A), 9 from A9 (series B) and none from PCC4-aza 1. The transformed clones contained mink TK or HPRT. Analysis of syntenic markers in series B demonstrated that one clone contained mink glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and the other alpha-galactosidase; in series A, nine clones contained mink galactokinase (GALK) and six mink aldolase C (ALDC). Analysis of 12 asyntenic markers located in ten mink chromosomes showed the presence of only aconitase-1 (ACON1) (the marker of mink chromosome 12) in three clones of series A. The clones lost mink ACON1 between the fifth to tenth passages. Cytogenetic analysis established the presence of a fragment of mink chromosome 8 in eight clones of series A, but not in series B. The clones of series A lost mink TK together with mink GALK and ALDC during back-selection; in B, back-selection retained mink G6PD. No stable TK+ phenotype was detected in clones with a visible fragment of mink chromosome 8. Stability analysis demonstrated that about half of the clones of series B have stable HPRT+ phenotype whereas only three clones of series A have stable TK+ phenotype. It is suggested that the recipient cells, LMTK- and A9, differ in their competence for genetic transformation and integration of foreign genes.  相似文献

The process of aspiration of monodisperse Lycopodium spores (d = 32 μm) from the weakly disturbed atmosphere and the calm air into aerosol samplers of various designs was experimentally investigated. Besides, some qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the interaction of spores with inner surfaces of sampling lines were studied, three experimental installations being employed.

Thin- and thick-walled cylindrical probes, their inner diameters being 0.3–1.5 cm and their length being 10–50 cm, as well as probes of other geometries were used in the experiments. The flow rate varied from 1 to 1000 cm3 s?1; the mean wind speed value varied from 0 to 2 m s?1.

Some regularities of sampling of air-spores were obtained. The aerosol concentration distortions caused by particle inertia and rebound as well as the wall loss effect were determined. The analysis is provided with a number of practical recommendations for sampling air spores into probes of aerosol measurement devices.  相似文献

Background.?The use of relatively lower stimulus presentation numbers in quantitative sensory testing may influence the computation accuracy of participants’ discriminability. The minimum trial number for obtaining a stabilized participant discrimination ability was determined.

Materials and methods.?Twelve participants’ ability to discriminate between noxious heat stimuli pairs (45°C/46°C, 46°C/47°C, and 47°C/48°C) was assessed using a six-category confidence rating scale. Heat stimuli were administered to the forearm. Two conditions with presentation numbers of 17 trials per stimulus (representing the median number of trials in previous studies) and 40 trials per stimulus (used in a previous study with a similar protocol) were used.

Results and discussion.?Participants’ discriminability stabilized at approximately the 20th trial based on the lowest frequency of indeterminate and non-model conforming results under both conditions. A simple linear regression model showed a statistically significant positive relationship between discriminability for the two conditions (slope?=?0.65, p?<?0.001; constant?=?0.33, p?=?0.02; r2?=?0.51). As a rule of thumb, approximately 20 trials per stimulus intensity could be used to obtain a stabilized discriminability outcome.  相似文献

1.  To determine reliability of stimulus intensity coding we measured the response variability of 30 hydroxy-L-proline sensitive chemoreceptor cells from antennules of Homarus americanus. First, cells were tested with 5 repeated presentations of 10-5 M and l0-4 M hydroxy-L-proline. Then a stimulus response function was determined in each cell from l0-6to 5 × l0-4 M in half log steps.
2.  Population mean responses to repetitive stimulation showed little variability and mean stimulus response functions increased monotonically. In contrast, most individual cells showed a high response variability and no single cell stimulus-response function increased monotonically. The greatest response variability occurred between different cells.
3.  Mean response magnitude of a 30 cell population allowed reliable discrimination between 10-5 M and l0-4 M hydroxy-L-proline for each of the 5 repetitions. It also allowed discrimination of all concentrations of hydroxy-L-proline tested. Across-fiber response patterns also differed significantly with concentration while they remained relatively stable with repetition of the same stimulus.
4.  We applied different analytical methods to test the reliability of response magnitude and across-fiber pattern as possible codes for intensity discrimination. We demonstrated that a random population of rather unreliable receptor cells could provide remarkably reliable intensity information to the CNS based on response magnitude or across-fiber pattern.

Daily (24 h) milk intake and body water turnover were measured in eight litters of suckling mink (Mustela vison) kits (6–9 kits litter−1) during weeks 1–4 post partum using the tritiated water (3HHO) dilution technique. The biological half-life of body water turnover in the mink kits increased linearly from 0.9 days in week 1 (3–5 days post partum) to 1.9 days in week 4 (22–24 days post partum). The daily milk intake varied markedly among the mink kits within a litter and increased significantly with increasing body mass from (mean±SEM) 10.9±0.4 g per kit during week 1 to 27.7±1.0 g per kit during week 4. Throughout the study, male kits were ∼10% heavier and had a significantly higher milk intake than female kits. The results were corrected for water recycling between the dam and her kits, ranging from ∼4 to 15% of the daily milk water intake, and the calculated daily milk yield of the 2 year old lactating mink dams increased from 87±7 g day−1 in week 1 to 190±15 g day−1 in week 4 post partum. The average body growth rate of the mink kits ranged from 2.9 g kit−1 per day in week 1 to 5.4 g kit−1 per day in week 4, and the calculated mean intake of mink milk per unit of body weight gain was remarkably stable at 4.0 (g g−1) during weeks 1–3 post partum, but increased to 5.6 (g g−1) in week 4 post partum. The amount of metabolizable energy supplied to the kits by the daily milk yield of the dam increased from ≈450 to ≈990 kJ day−1, which corresponded well with the calculated daily energy requirements of the kits. The tritiated water dilution technique was found feasible and reliable for repeated measurements of milk intake in suckling mink kits up to 4 weeks of age.  相似文献

Abstract The air-flow regime over a Populus leaf was investigated using a constant temperature hot-film sensor which could be glued on the abaxial surface. The leaf was exposed to a laminar or turbulent flow of air in a wind-tunnel, while being free to undergo normal motion. In the laminar air-flow the boundary layer remained laminar, despite the fluttering of the leaf, until a Reynolds number of 2.3 × 104 was reached. When the air incident on the leaf was made turbulent, to resemble natural conditions, the boundary layer became turbulent at a Reynolds number of 0.4 × 104. The experiments suggest that the boundary layers over leaves are always turbulent in the natural wind.  相似文献

Summary Crocodilians are amphibious reptiles which hunt prey both on land and in water. Previous refractive and anatomical studies have suggested that their eyes can focus objects in air and that their ability to refocus the eye underwater may be limited. Examination of the plane of focus of six species of crocodilians both in air and underwater has revealed that they are generally well focused in air for distant targets and severely defocused underwater. Summary Model leaves were used to test the hypothesis that serrate leaves have more convective heat loss than entire leaves of the same average size. Convection coefficients were positively correlated with size of teeth, supporting the hypothesis. The mechanisms behind the 13C enrichment of organic matter with increasing soil depth in forests are unclear. To determine if 13C discrimination during respiration could contribute to this pattern, we compared δ13C signatures of respired CO2 from sieved mineral soil, litter layer and litterfall with measurements of δ13C and δ15N of mineral soil, litter layer, litterfall, roots and fungal mycelia sampled from a 68-year-old Norway spruce forest stand planted on previously cultivated land. Because the land was subjected to ploughing before establishment of the forest stand, shifts in δ13C in the top 20 cm reflect processes that have been active since the beginning of the reforestation process. As 13C-depleted organic matter accumulated in the upper soil, a 1.0‰ δ13C gradient from −28.5‰ in the litter layer to −27.6‰ at a depth of 2–6 cm was formed. This can be explained by the 1‰ drop in δ13C of atmospheric CO2 since the beginning of reforestation together with the mixing of new C (forest) and old C (farmland). However, the isotopic change of the atmospheric CO2 explains only a portion of the additional 1.0‰ increase in δ13C below a depth of 20 cm. The δ13C of the respired CO2 was similar to that of the organic matter in the upper soil layers but became increasingly 13C enriched with depth, up to 2.5‰ relative to the organic matter. We hypothesise that this 13C enrichment of the CO2 as well as the residual increase in δ13C of the organic matter below a soil depth of 20 cm results from the increased contribution of 13C-enriched microbially derived C with depth. Our results suggest that 13C discrimination during microbial respiration does not contribute to the 13C enrichment of organic matter in soils. We therefore recommend that these results should be taken into consideration when natural variations in δ13C of respired CO2 are used to separate different components of soil respiration or ecosystem respiration.  相似文献

The distribution and size of ganglion cells in the retina of two tucuxi were investigated. Retinal cell size varied from 10 to 50 μm with a polymodal size distribution; major groups were seen with sizes of 8-20, 21-35, and more than 35 μm. Ganglion cells concentrated at two spots of the highest density in the nasal and temporal quadrants, about 10 mm (60′) from the optic disk. The mean peak cell density in both spots was 188-198 cells/mm2. With a posterior nodal distance of 9.5-10 mm (underwater), the density at those two spots corresponded to 5.4-5.7 cells/deg2, which provides a retinal resolution of 25′-26′ (1.16-1.19 cycle/deg) in water and 33′-34′ (0.9 cycle/deg) in air.  相似文献

Summary A method for gene transfer by means of interphase nuclei encapsulated within lipid membranes was developed. The method was based on passage of interphase nuclei through a layer of organic solvents containing phospholipids. Evidence was obtained indicating that the nuclei become surrounded by a protective phospholipid membrane: measurements of bound labelled or non-labelled phospholipids; decrease in the permeability of lipid-encapsulated nuclei for high molecular compounds; visualization by direct electron microscopy. Lipid-encapsulated nuclei of mink fibroblasts were used for transformation of mutant mouse LMTK- cells (deficient for thymidine kinase). The frequency of occurrence of HAT-resistant colonies/recipient cell was 1.9x10-5. Biochemical analysis of 14 independent clones demonstrated that they all contained TK1 of mink origin. Analysis of 15 other biochemical markers located on 12 of the mink chromosomes revealed the activities of mink galactokinase (a syntenic marker) in 5 transformed clones, and that of mink aconitase-1 (the marker of mink chromosome 12) in 1 clone. No cytogenetically visible donor chromosomes were identified in the transformed clones. Nine transformed clones were tested for the stability of the TK+ phenotype; of these, the phenotype was expressed stably in 3 and unstably in 6. The method suggested is similar to the gene transfer procedure using total DNA. Its advantage is in ensuring efficient gene transfer and donor DNA integrity.  相似文献
