Summary The availability of Ca from different levels of gypsum and calcium carbonate in a non-saline sodic soil has been investigated. Different levels of tagged gypsum (Ca45SO4.2H2O) and calcium carbonate (Ca45CO3) (i.e. 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 per cent of gypsum requirement) were mixed thoroughly in 3.5 Kg of a non-saline alkali soil (ESP, 48.4; ECe, 2.68 millimhos/cm). Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) — a legume and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) — a cereal were taken as test crops. Increasing levels of gypsum caused a gradual increase in the yield of dry matter, content of Ca and K in the plant tops and Ca:Na and (Ca+Mg):(Na+K) ratios in both the crops. Application of calcium carbonate caused a slight increase in the dry matter yield, content of Ca and Mg and Ca:Na and (Ca+Mg):(Na+K) ratios in barley, however, in case of dhaincha there was no such effect. Gypsum application caused a gradual decrease in the content of Na and P in both the crops. Total uptake of Ca, Mg, K, N and P per pot increased in response to gypsum application. The effect of calcium carbonate application on the total uptake of these elements was much smaller on dhaincha, but in barley there was some increasing trend.Increasing application of tagged gypsum and calcium carbonate caused a gradual increase in the concentration and per cent contribution of source Ca in both the crops, although, the rate of increase was considerably more in dhaincha. The availability of Ca from applied gypsum was considerably more than that from applied calcium carbonate. Efficiency of dhaincha to utilize Ca from applied sources was considerably more (i.e. about five times) than that of barley  相似文献

The cationic responses of haemolymph, mantle collar, headfoot, gut + digestive diverticulum and ovotestis + albumin gland of three planorbids to cationic changes in the media are explored. Body organs exhibited cationic homeostasis, although attained with difficulty under very low Ca : Mg and Ca : Na ratios. Haemolymph imbalances were obtained at very low calcium concentrations and at very low Ca : Mg and Ca : Na ratios in the medium; this may be linked to competition for Ca2+ uptake sites in the epithelium by Mg2+ and possibly Na+ ions.Fecundity and shell growth in relation to calcium concentrations and to Ca : Mg and Ca : Na ratios are examined.Normal internal cationic levels, under optimal conditions, were obtained for each species. Significant interspecific differences for haemolymph sodium were found; magnesium levels were slightly higher in Biomphalaria spp. than in Helisoma trivolvis; potassium levels were all similar. Amounts of tissue calcium decreased as follows: Mantle collar head-foot ovotestis + albumin gland-gut + diverticulum. Tissue magnesium levels in the gut were low. H. trivolvis had highest tissue calcium and sodium; B. glabrata had highest tissue potassium.  相似文献

Unfed oysters, Crassostrea virginica Gmelin, in 12 g/1 commercial grade artificial sea-water supplemented with calcium bicarbonate (approximately 7 mM Ca++ and HCO3?) deposit shell for four to six weeks. A no-growth critical calcium ion concentration of 1.5 mM was determined in this study. A simple sublethal bioassay system can be developed utilizing the observed shell growth. Significant (p < 0.001) inhibition of shell deposition in oysters subjected to an initial concentration of 0.25 mg Cd++/1 demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed method.  相似文献

Calcium Efflux from Internally Dialyzed Squid Giant Axons   总被引:12,自引:10,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
Calcium efflux has been studied in squid giant axons under conditions in which the internal composition was controlled by means of a dialysis perfusion technique. The mean calcium efflux from axons dialyzed with 0.3 µM calcium and 5 mM ATP was 0.26 pmol/cm2·s at 22°C. The curve relating the Ca efflux with the internal Ca concentration had a slope of about one for [Ca]i lower than 0.3µM and a slope smaller than one for higher concentrations. Under the above conditions replacement of [Na]o and [Ca]o by Tris and Mg causes an 80% fall in the calcium efflux. When the axons were dialyzed with a medium free of ATP and containing 2 mM cyanide plus 5µg/ml oligomycin, analysis of the perfusion effluent gave values of 1–4 µM ATP. Under this low ATP condition, replacement of external sodium and calcium causes the same drop in the calcium efflux. The same effect was observed at higher [Ca]i, (80 µM). These results suggest that the Na-Ca exchange component of the calcium efflux is apparently not dependent on the amounts of ATP in the axoplasm. Axons previously depleted of ATP show a significant transient drop in the calcium efflux when ATP is added to the dialysis medium. This effect probably represents the sequestering of calcium by the mitochondrial system. The consumption of calcium by the mitochondria of the axoplasm in dialyzed axons was determined to be of the order of 6.0 x 10-7 mol Ca++/mg of protein with an initial rate of 2.6 x 10-8 mol Ca++/min·mg of protein. Axons dialyzed with 2 mM cyanide after 8–10-min delays show a rise in the calcium efflux in the presence of "normal" amounts of exogenous ATP. This effect seems to indicate that cyanide, per se, can release calcium ions from internal sources.  相似文献

Summary Application of gypsum (tagged Ca45SO4.2H2O) caused a considerable increase in dry matter yield and content of Ca, Ca45, Mg and K and Ca:Na and (Ca+Mg): (Na+K) ratios and a decrease in the content of Na, N and P in dhaincha tops. There was a considerable increase in the total uptake of Ca, Mg, Na, K, N, P and Ca45 by plant tops in response to gypsum. Contribution of Ca from applied Ca45SO4 varied from 78.3 to 84.7 per cent of the total Ca in plant tops, whereas, its uptake from this source varied from 52.18 to 98.73 me per 100 g plant tops. re]19720705  相似文献

Limnological measurements during the first year of filling of the newly formed Mazvikadei Reservoir in Zimbabwe showed variations in dissolved oxygen as well as soluble forms of phosphorus and nitrogen. The ratios of calcium to other major cations were: Ca:Mg = 0.38, Ca:Na = 0.50 and Ca:K = 2.0. The low Ca:Mg ratio may suppress development of mollusc populations, thus keeping the reservoir snail free. Conductivity was 160 μScm-1. Daytime pH was 6.95–7.8. The water was dark-brown in colour, 90% of incident light was attenuated in the top 0.75 m in May, and in the top 3.5 m in August. Positive net photosynthesis was only recorded above a depth of 0.1 m, at 0.5 m and 1.0 m depths, it was negative. Zooplankton consisted of nine rotifer, four cladoceran, two cyclopoid and one calanoid species.  相似文献

Summary The passive Ca efflux from human red cell ghosts was studied in media of differing ion compositions and compared to the ATP-dependent Ca efflux. Cells were loaded with45Ca during reversible hemolysis, and the loss of radioactivity into the non-radioactive incubation medium was measured, usually for 3 hr at 37°C. Analysis of the efflux curves revealed that45Ca efflux followed the kinetics of a simple two-compartment system. In the concentration range between 0 and 1mm Ca in the external solution ([Ca++] o ), the rate constant of passive Ca efflux (k min–1, fraction of45Ca lost per minute into the medium) increased from 0.00732 to 0.0150 min–1. There was no further increase at higher [Ca++] o . The relation between the rate constant of Ca efflux and [Ca++] o is thus characterized by saturation kinetics. The passive transfer system for Ca could also be activated by Sr. The alkali metal ions Na, K and Li did not seem to have any significant influence on passive Ca transfer. The passive Ca efflux was slightly inhibited by Mg and strongly inhibited by Pb. Under most experimental conditions, a fraction of 15 to 50% of the intracellular Ca seemed to be inexchangeable. The inexchangeable fraction decreased with increasing [Ca++] o and increased with increasing [Ca++] i . It was not influenced by alkali metal ions, CN or Pb, but it could be completely removed from the cells by the addition of 0.1mm Mersalyl to the incubation medium or by hemolysis with addition of a detergent. The active ATP-dependent Ca transport differed characteristically from passive transfer; the rate constant decreased with increasing [Ca++] o , and the inexchangeable Ca fraction increased with increasing [Ca++] o . The experimental results suggest that there exists a carrier-mediated Ca–Ca exchange diffusion in the erythrocyte membrane and that only a fraction of the ghost cell population participates in the Ca exchange diffusion.  相似文献

The uptake of potassium, calcium, and magnesium ions by maizeand the interrelationships among the cations have been investigatedat 48 K: Ca: Mg ratios in culture solutions. Calcium was foundto stimulate K+ and Mg++ uptake at certain cation ratios butinhibit it at others. Potassium did the same for Ca++ uptake, and Mg++ for Ca++ and K+. The uptake of Mg++ was generally enhancedby K+. The sum of the cations in the plants expressed in meqwas fairly constant for treatments of the same K+ concentrationat the low to moderate levels of K+, but at considerably higher(> 24 meq l–1) K+ levels the constancy was not dependenton K+ concentration. Potassium depressed, but Mg++ stimulatedphosphorus accumulation. Calcium stimulated phosphate absorptionat certain cation ratios but had no effect at others. The plantyield increased with increasing K+ up to 24 meq l–1 ofK+ after which the yield tended to fall with further increasein K+. The yield was also increased by Ca++. Magnesium increasedthe yield at certain cation ratios and either depressed it orwas without effect at others.  相似文献

Electrical properties of the muscle fiber membrane were studied in the barnacle, Balanus nubilus Darw. by using intracellular electrode techniques. A depolarization of the membrane does not usually produce an all-or-none spike potential in the normal muscle fiber even though a mechanical response is elicited. The intracellular injection of Ca++-binding agents (K2SO4 and K salt of EDTA solution, K3 citrate solution, etc.) renders the fiber capable of initiating all-or-none spikes. The overshoot of such a spike potential increases with increasing external Ca concentration, the increment for a tenfold increase in Ca concentration being about 29 mv. The threshold membrane potential for the spike and also for the K conductance increase shifts to more positive membrane potentials with increasing [Ca++]out. The removal of Na ions from the external medium does not change the configuration of the spike potential. In the absence of Ca++ in the external medium, the spike potential is restored by Ba++ and Sr++ but not by Mg++. The overshoot of the spike potential increases with increasing [Ba++]out or [Sr++]out. The Ca influx through the membrane of the fiber treated with K2SO4 and EDTA was examined with Ca45. The influx was 14 pmol per sec. per cm2 for the resting membrane and 35 to 85 pmol per cm2 for one spike. From these results it is concluded that the spike potential of the barnacle muscle fiber results from the permeability increase of the membrane to Ca++ (Ba++ or Sr++).  相似文献

Major ion chemistry in a tropical African lake basin   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
SUMMARY. The amount of water lost by seepage from Lake Naivasha, calculated as the residual in the water budget, was 5 (1973), 11 (1974) and 20% (1975) of the total water loss. Direct measurements of seepage in nearshore shallows indicated that water entered the lake via ground-water seepage in the northern portion and left the lake in the southern portion. Naivasha lies in a topographic closed basin but is hydrologically a seepage lake; it is distinctive among the lakes lying in the endorheic rift valleys of Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania because the water is fresh. The mean chemical composition (mg l?1) of bulk precipitation collected on two transects across the rift valley near L. Naivasha and at three stations near Nairobi was: Na, 0.54, K, 0.31; Ca, 0.19; Mg, 0.23; SO4, 0.72 and Cl, 0.41. The major inflow, the Malewa River, was largely a solution of bicarbonate (1.15 m-equiv, l?1), sodium (9 mg l?1) and calcium (8 mg l?1) and carried a total dissolved solid load (kg ha?1) of 62 (1973) and 120 (1974). Total dissolved solids, sodium, calcium and bicarbonate concentrations were inversely related to discharge. Among the standing waters in the Naivasha basin, sodium and bicarbonate are predominant and the mean total dissolved solute content (mg l?1) increased from a low under the northern papyrus swamp (217) to intermediate values in L. Naivasha (329), the nearshore lagoons (367) and Crescent Island basin (394) to a high in Oloidien Lake (831). Ion ratios and stability field diagrams indicated that calcite is formed in the Crescent Island basin and Oloidien Lake. Calcite was detected in the sediments of the two basins. Ion ratios also indicated that sulphate was retained in the sediments of the northern papyrus swamp. Several factors combine to keep L. Naivasha's water fresh. A large fraction of the water supplied to the lake comes from dilute rivers and rain. The lake does not lie in a closed basin, but loses water and solutes via seepage. Exchanges with sediments both in the pelagic and littoral regions of the lake are the major routes for solute movement and biochemical sedimentation is a major factor in removal of silica. Both geochemical and biochemical sedimentation account for much of the potassium, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate removal. Only low levels of the conservative ions, sodium and chloride, are taken up by the sediments, while very low levels of sulphate and fluoride are actually released.  相似文献

The freshwater sponge, Ephydatia fluviatilis (Porifera: Spongillidae), was maintained in a continuous-flow laboratory culture system under several conditions of calcium ion (Ca++) concentration and salinity. Experimental results suggest that sponge growth rate increases with increasing Ca++ concentration, that sponge growth rate decreases with increasing salinity, and that the negative effect of higher salinity can be overcome by increasing Ca++ concentration. The experimental results correlate well with field observations on the effects of salinity and Ca++ on the distribution of E. fluviatilis.  相似文献

We performed experiments to elucidate the calcium influx pathways in freshly dispersed rabbit corneal epithelial cells. Three possible pathways were considered: voltage-gated Ca++ channels, Na+/Ca++ exchange, and nonvoltage-dependent Ca++-permeable channels. Whole cell inward currents carrying either Ca++ or Ba++ were not detected using voltage clamp techniques. We also used imaging technology and the Ca++-sensitive ratiometric dye fura 2 to measure changes in intracellular Ca++ concentration ([Ca]i). Bath perfusion with NaCl Ringer's solution containing the calcium channel agonist Bay-K-8644 (1 m), or Ni++ (40 m), a blocker of many voltage-dependent calcium channels, did not affect [Ca++]i. Membrane depolarization with a KCl Ringer's bath solution resulted in a decrease in [Ca++]i. These results are inconsistent with the presence of voltage gated Ca++ channels. Nonvoltage gated Ca++ entry, on the other hand, would be reduced by membrane depolarization and enhanced by membrane hyperpolarization. Agents which hyperpolarize via stimulation of K+ current, such as flufenamic acid, resulted in an increase in ratio intensity. The cells were found to be permeable to Mn++ and bath perfusion with 5 mm Ni++ decreased [Ca++]i suggesting that the Ca++ conductance was blocked. These results are most consistent with a nonvoltage gated Ca++ influx pathway. Finally, replacing extracellular Na+ with Li+ resulted in an increase in [Ca++]i if the cells were first Na+-loaded using the Na+ ionophore monensin and ouabain, a Na+-K+-ATPase inhibitor. These results suggest that Na+/Ca++ exchange may also regulate [Ca++] in this cell type. The authors are grateful to Chris Bartling for expert technical assistance with the imaging experiments, Helen Hendrickson for cell preparation, and Jonathon Monck for helpful discussions regarding imaging technology. Summary When the mulletMugil capito is transferred to medium lacking Ca++ (either Ca++-free seawater or distilled water) the passive permeability of the gill to Na+ and Cl is increased and the activating effect of external K+ on the Na+ and Cl effluxes in hyposaline media is inhibited. The permeability of the gill increases progressively in proportion to the time of Ca++ deprivation; it declines when Ca++ is added again to the external medium. The active mechanisms for ion excretion are not reversible. At external Ca++ concentrations from 0.1 to 10 mM the Na+ permeability is constant but the activation of Na+ efflux by K+ shows a maximum at a Ca++ concentration of about 1 mM. For activation of Cl efflux external bicarbonate must be present, in addition to Ca++, suggesting the existence of a Cl/HCO 3 exchange. The mechanism by which Ca++ controls the passive branchial permeability is thus probably different from that involved in K+ activation of ion excretion. The Ca++ effect on the K+ sensitive ionic excretory mechanisms seems to be related to intracellular Ca++ movements. Thus, on the one hand, substances such as Ruthenium Red and La+++ which both inhibit Ca++ exchange, in media containing Ca++ and HCO 3 also inhibit K+ activation of Na+ and Cl effluxes; on the other hand, the ionophore A 23187, a stimulator of Ca++ exchange, when added to these media, activates the Na+ and Cl effluxes; its maximal effect on the Na+ flux occurs at 2 mM Ca++.Abbreviations ASW-Ca artificial seawater minus calcium - DW deionised water - DWCa deionised water with 1 mM Ca++ added - DWCaHCO 3 DW with calcium plus bicarbonate - DWHCO 3 DW with 1 mM sodium bicarbonate added - FW freshwater (tap water) - FWK freshwater with K+ added - P. Pomacea (Ampullariidae) snails, commonly referred to as apple snails, serve as prey for many freshwater-dependent predators, and some species are highly invasive. Identifying limits to apple snail distribution and abundance are pertinent to understanding their ecology. Calcium (Ca2+) availability and pH generally influences freshwater snail populations, yet scant data exist for Pomacea snails. We measured 6-week change in shell length (ΔSL) in P. paludosa in two laboratory experiments with varying Ca2+ and pH levels. ΔSL was significantly higher in ≥28 mg Ca2+/l compared with treatments ≤14 mg/l. Snails from populations living in low Ca2+/pH waters did not appear genetically predisposed at growing faster in these conditions. Smallest ΔSL was in snails treated with 3.6 mg Ca2+/l and pH < 6.5 water; these snails had signs of shell erosion. Shell crush weights (CWs) were lowest for snails grown in the lowest Ca2+/pH treatment. Smaller shells and lower CWs have implications for predation vulnerability and reproductive success. Our results are consistent with reports associating relatively low snail densities with relatively low Ca2+/pH waters, and they are consistent with the geographic distribution of P. paludosa as related to the underlying water chemistry as influenced by geology.  相似文献

Summary Specimens of Paramecium immersed in solutions of CaCl2 show graded electrogenesis in response to imposed transmembrane current. However, when BaCl2 in a final concentration of 0.25 mM is added to a 1 mM CaCl2 solution, an outward current pulse of 10-10 amp or greater elicits an all-or-none transient reversal in membrane potential having a duration of about 40 msec. An increase of [Ba++] results in (a) lower resting potential, (b) positive shift in critical firing level, (c) increased overshoot of the action potential, (d) decreased hyperpolarizing afterpotential, and (e) increased duration of the action potential (a.p.). If [Ca++] is increased along with [Ba++] so as to keep the ratio [Ba++]/[Ca++] constant, the same results are obtained except that the duration of the a. p. remains unaltered. Thus, effects a-d appear to be related to [Ba++] and not to [Ca++] or [Cl-]. The degree of overshoot in 1 mM Ca is linearly related to log [Ba++] with a slope of approximately 22 mv. With the ratio [Ba++]/[Ca++] constant, the slope closely approaches the ideal value of 29 mv. The evidence indicates that prolongation of the action potential is due to a delayed onset of Ba inactivation, and that this in turn is a function of surface-bound Ba. Other features of the action potential are absolute refractoriness during its rising and plateau phases, relative refractoriness lasting several seconds, and repetitive firing in response to steady current depolarization. The response is unaffected by TTX and TEA. Mn prolongs the action potential. Sr has an action similar to Ba, whereas the addition of K, Na, Rb, or Mg to the basic calcium medium is unaccompanied by all-or-none electrogenesis. On leave of absence from the Zoological Institute, Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo.Support came from National Science Foundation grant GB-5752x, U.S.P.H.S. grant NB-03664, and in part from Office of Naval Research grant Nonr 4785(00) administered by the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole.  相似文献

Summary The uptake of Ca and Sr by three-week old tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) plants from solutions containing Ca++ and Sr++, and chelated Ca and Sr (CaL and SrL) was measured over a two-day period. The solution was double-labelled with Ca45 and Sr85. Two chelates, EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) were used at five chelate-cation ratios. When the Ca and Sr content of the solution was held constant, addition of chelate reduced uptake. The reduction was greater with EDTA than with DTPA.The Ca/Sr ratio of uptake was used to measure the proportion of uptake as the chelated and unchelated species. The Ca++/Sr++ ratio was different from the CaL/SrL ratio in solution because of the different equilibrium reactions of Ca and Sr with L. Direct uptake of the CaL and SrL was indicated. In solutions where Ca++ = CaL, uptake of CaEDTA was 0.47 of uptake of Ca++ and uptake of CaDTPA was 0.95 of uptake of Ca++.Journal Paper No. 4969. Dependence of the inhibitory action of adenosine on the extracellular composite EPSP on the concentrations of Mg and Ca cations in the medium was investigated in isolated slices of rat hippocampusin vitro. Extracellular EPSPs were derived in the region of apical dendrites of pyramidal cells in area CA1 during stimulation of Schaffer's collaterals. The blocking action of bivalent cations (an increase in Mg++ or a decrease in Ca++) developed almost five times more slowly than the action of adenosine. An increase in the external Mg++ concentration potentiated whereas a decrease weakened the inhibitory action of adenosine. Ca++ ions had the opposite effect. Antagonistic relations were exhibited between Mg++ and Ca++ ions. Analysis of dose-response curves for adenosine showed that during a simultaneous increase in the extracellular Ca++ and decrease in Mg++ concentrations, not only was the maximal effect of adenosine reduced, but so also was its binding constant with the receptor. The results suggest that antagonism between Ca cations and adenosine is mixed in character — both competitive and noncompetitive. The possible mechanism of the inhibitory action of adenosine on synaptic transmission and the role of bivalent cations in this process are discussed.A. A. Electropotential differences between the cytoplasm and external medium have been compared in the mature R. pipiens occyte and the ovulated unfertilized egg as a function of [Na]o, [K]o, [Ca]o and [Cl]o. In solutions containing 1.0 mM Ca++ the oocyte behaved as though it were predominantly permeable to K+ and Cl?, i.e., like a KCl electrode. However, the steady potential decreased with decreasing [Ca]o and in 5 × 10?4 mM [Ca]o the oocyte membrane behaved like a NaCl electrode. Studies on the steady potential as a function of [Na]o, [K]o and [Cl]o in 1.0 mM Ca++ or Ca-free solutions suggest that Ca++ controls the passive permeability of the oocyte membrane to Na+ and Cl?. In the ovulated unfertilized egg the K+ selectivity of the cell membrane disappeared and the system behaved like a NaCl electrode. No effect of external Ca++ or K+ concentration changes on the steady potential was observed. These results indicate that the ion permeability properties of the ovulated egg are similar to that of the ovarian oocyte in Ca-deficient medium, and suggests that the mechanism of ovulation may involve the removal of Ca++ regulation of ion permeability of the egg cell membrane.  相似文献

Contraction of the heart is regulated by a number of mechanisms, such as neurotransmitters, hormones, autacoids, pH, intracellular ATP, and Ca++ ions. These actions are mediated, at least in part, by actions on the sarcolemmal slow (L-type) Ca++ channels, exerted directly or indirectly. The major mechanisms for the regulation of the slow Ca++ channels of myocardial cells includes the following. cAMP/PK-A phosphorylation stimulates the slow Ca` channel activity, whereas cGMP/PK-G phosphorylation inhibits. DAG/PK-C phosphorylation and tyrosine kinase phosphorylation are suggested to stimulate the slow Ca++ channel activity. Intracellular application of Gs protein increases the slow Ca++ currents (ICa(L)). Lowering of intracellular ATP inhibits ICa(L). Acidosis and increase in [Ca]i inhibits ICa(L). A number of changes in the Ca++ channels also occur during development and aging. Thus, it appears that the slow Ca++ channel is a complex structure, including perhaps several associated regulatory proteins, which can be regulated by a number of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, and thereby control can be exercised over the force of contraction of the heart.  相似文献

Calcium distribution and exchange in the rat uterus   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5       下载免费PDF全文
The calcium content and distribution of the rat uterus were determined employing flame photometry and Ca45 determinations. The total uterine calcium concentration was found to be 2.25 millimoles (mmoles) per kilogram wet weight, 0.45 of which was inexchangeable. The exchangeable Ca could be divided into 0.8 mmole/kg wet weight extracellular and 1.0 mmole/kg wet weight intracellular. The concentration of ionic Ca in rat serum was obtained by equilibrium dialysis as 1.5 mM or 53 % of the total serum Ca. The observed Ca distribution required that its active transport be postulated, since the membrane was shown to be permeable to Ca and the internal Ca concentration was far below its electrochemical equilibrium value. Metabolic inhibition by iodoacetate or dinitrophenol caused a net Ca uptake, but cooling to 4°C and ouabain did not. Iodoacetate did not affect the Ca45 efflux, but did increase the influx, suggesting that active Ca transport is accomplished by an exclusion mechanism. In experiments with varied external sodium concentrations, no evidence was obtained that sodium competes with calcium for inward transport. Cellular Ca binding was measured under conditions of prolonged metabolic inhibition, which abolished both active transport and the membrane potential. The association constants obtained were compatible with intracellular Ca binding to proteins, but insufficient to account for the low level of intracellular ionic Ca believed essential for relaxation. Hence metabolically dependent intracellular Ca binding was postulated. The Ca45 efflux was slowed down by Ca-free efflux media. The presence of Sr or EDTA could completely prevent this decrease in efflux rate, and Ba could partly prevent it. Changes in Mg and Na concentration did not affect the rate of Ca45 efflux. A model to explain Ca exchange across smooth muscle membranes has been proposed.  相似文献
