1. Using sampling rates of 8–64 Hz we found clear indications of extensive and high frequency fluctuations of underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) just below the surface (0.016–1.1 m) in some New Zealand water bodies. High variability and flashing occurred down to at least 3 m depth.
2. PAR variability increased under the influence of bright sunshine if wind roughening of the surface took place. Concomitantly, the average PAR levels declined by about 10%. However, even when the surface was shaded, high variability of PAR persisted.
3. Under a calm surface, PAR irradiance followed a log normal distribution. This occurred independently of the presence of direct sunlight. However, when the surface was roughened by wind in sunshine, PAR immediately switched to a Gumbel (extreme value type EV1) distribution.
4. Neither wave action nor wave focusing of incident irradiance would explain the wide range of PAR close to the water surface, although both factors add to the PAR variability.
5. The data indicate that transmittance through the surface is highly variable at the temporal and spatial scales studied, and that the irregularity of the air–water interface is instrumental in bringing about the observed fluctuations of PAR just below the surface.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Measurements were made of the attenuation and spectral distribution of downwelling and upwelling photosynthetically-available radiation (PAR) in all the principal types of natural waters found in Tasmania. 2. Most lakes in the State are clear and non-turbid, with water itself and the low concentrations of gilvin being the principal determinants of the green underwater light climate. Many others are deeply coloured by dissolved and colloidal organic material (gilvin, gelbstoff) which rapidly attenuates short wavelengths, specifying a shallow, predominantly red euphotic zone. 3. A spectrophotometric measure of colour, the absorption coefficient at 440 nm, is statistically related to measurements on the platinum scale with good precision. 4. Few Tasmanian lakes are turbid but in those that are the underwater light climate is almost identical to that of non-turbid, humic lakes. 5. Reflectance, R, varied with depth but not in the asymptotic way previously encountered. A linear relationship existed between the scattering coefficient, b, and nephelometric turbidity, but not at the approximate 1:1 ratio reported elsewhere. 6. Most Tasmanian lakes are oligotrophic or dystrophic and phytoplankton rarely influenced the underwater light field. 7. Seasonal variation in optical character is not great in natural lakes and their optical properties and light fields can be used typologically. 8. Simple and multiple regression analysis showed that Secchi depth was a poor predictor of euphotic depth but the optical properties and the underwater light field of inaccessible lakes could be reasonably predicted from laboratory measurements made on small water samples, using regressions developed for a wide range of lake types and by reference to the quantaradiometric scans of lakes with comparable optical properties. 9. An optical classification of Tasmanian lakes made by cluster analysis agreed reasonably well with one based on edaphic, vegetational and chemical criteria.  相似文献

Aim:  To determine the relationship between the presence of thermotolerant campylobacters and their bacteriophages (phages) in surface waters for the potential to use phages as an indicator of Campylobacter spp.
Methods and Results:  Thermotolerant campylobacters were enumerated in 53 water samples using a three tube most probable number (MPN) series in m-Exeter broth. The presence of phages in the same samples was tested using two approaches: qualitative enrichment with five different Campylobacter hosts and a quantitative membrane concentration method. Phages infecting an Escherichia coli O157:H7 isolate were also enumerated by the membrane concentration method. Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 45/53 (85%) of the samples at 0.4–110 MPN 100 ml−1. No Campylobacter phages were isolated, but coliphages were present in 43/46 (93%) of samples.
Conclusions:  The membrane concentration method recovered >80% of Campylobacter phages from spiked samples. The absence of Campylobacter phages in environmental samples, from both enrichment and concentration methods, suggests that, if present, they are at very low titres.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  Testing for Campylobacter phages as an indicator of Campylobacter spp. presence is not effective. The quantitative data for Campylobacter spp. will be useful for risk assessment purposes.  相似文献

The preliminary research in some tropical inland waters of Asia is described and suggestions made concerning Phase II of this project undertaken by the International Biological Programme/ Section PF (Freshwater Productivity). Environmental factors were measured in some of the main lakes and rivers and samples taken of the plant and animal life. The stomach contents of over 80 species of fish were examined and the remains of plants and animals present compared with the numbers present in the environment as obtained by the usual hydrobiological netting techniques. Some of the important problems associated with the biological productivity of these waters is discussed in the light of the results obtained from this preliminary survey.  相似文献

This study examines the seasonal variation in the underwater spectral distribution of light in a mesotrophic (Lake Cromwell) and an oligo-mesotrophic (Lake Croche) temperate lake. Gilvin is primarily responsible for the strong selective attenuation of blue light in both lakes. As a result of differing gilvin concentrations light transmission maxima of downwelling and upwelling spectra are near 615 nm in Lake Cromwell and 599 nm in Lake Croche. With increases in depth both upwelling and downwelling radiance fluxes decrease, are shifted to longer wavelengths and become more monochromatic. The greatest penetration of light occurs in the summer and spring after which a gradual decrease occurs through fall to a minimum value in winter. Under the winter cover the P 50 of downwelling light shifts 10 to 20 nm towards shorter wavelengths. Seasonal changes in downwelling irradiance are related to solar altitude, concentration of suspended particles, phytoplankton populations, amount of gilvin, mixing and winter cover. The brownish colouration of these lakes is explained by reflectance of spectrally impure orangish-red light.  相似文献

At all seasons, the underwater light field of meso-eutrophic large (480 km2) deep (mean: 100 m) Lake Constance was studied in conjunction with the assessments of vertical distributions of phytoplankton chlorophyll concentrations. Vertical profiles of scalar, downwelling and upwelling fluxes of photosynthetically available radiation, as well as fluxes of spectral irradiance between 400 and 700 nm wavelength were measured. The overall transparency of the water for PAR is highly dependent on chlorophyll concentration. However, the spectral composition of underwater light is narrowing with water depth regardless of phytoplankton biomass.Green light is transmitted best, even at extremely low chlorophyll concentrations. This is explained by the selective absorption of blue light by dissolved organic substances and red light by the water molecules. Nevertheless, significant correlations were found between vertical attenuation coefficients of downwelling spectral irradiance and chlorophyll concentrations at all wavelengths. The slopes of the regression lines were used as estimates of chlorophyll-specific spectral vertical light attenuation coefficients (K c()).The proportions of total upwelling relative to total downwelling irradiance (reflectance) increased with water depth, even when phytoplankton were homogeneously distributed over the water column. Under such conditions, reflectance of monochromatic light remained constant. Lower reflectance of PAR in shallow water is explained by smaller bandwidths of upwelling relative to downwelling light near the water surface. In deeper water, by contrast, the spectra of both upwelling and downwelling irradiance are narrowed to the most penetrating components in the green spectral range. Reflectance of PAR was significantly correlated with chlorophyll concentration and varied from 1% and 1-% at low and high phytoplankton biomass, respectively. Over the spectrum, reflectance exhibited a maximum in the green range. Moreover, in deeper layers, a red maximum was observed which is attributed to natural fluorescence by phytoplankton chlorophyll.  相似文献

AIMS: To use a published polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for the detection and identification of thermotolerant Campylobacter species (Camp. jejuni, Camp. coli and Camp. lari) in tandem with a Most Probable Number (MPN) technique to enumerate these species in water samples. METHODS AND RESULTS: An initial study of 42 river water samples compared the use of conventional culture and PCR methods for the detection of Campylobacter in MPN enrichment tubes. It was found that all samples positive by culture were also positive by PCR. Thirty-seven percent more MPN tubes were positive by PCR compared with culture. The MPN/PCR technique was subsequently applied to 96 additional samples collected from rivers, drinking, roof and shallow ground water. Campylobacter was especially prevalent in river water (60% positive) and shallow ground water (75% positive) samples. Drinking water (29.2% positive) and roof water (37.5% positive) also contained Campylobacter, but the numbers detected were very low (maximum 0.3 and 0.56 MPN 100 ml-1, respectively). CONCLUSION: River waters contained Campylobacter at higher levels than any other water type and in a high percentage of the samples. Although Campylobacter was present in treated drinking water, the levels detected were low. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These results suggest that water may act as a significant transmission route for human campylobacteriosis.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The inherent optical properties (scattering coefficients and absorption coefficients across the photosynthetic waveband) are presented from diverse tropical water bodies (billabongs) in the Alligator Rivers Region of northern Australia.
2. The data are used to interpret observed characteristics of the underwater light field as exemplified by the spectral distribution, and overall rate of attenuation, of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR).
3. Attenuation of PAR, especially in the blue waveband, is caused primarily by intense light absorption by the yellow-brown humic pigments, both soluble and particulate, in the water.
4. It was estimated that in six moderately turbid billabongs, light scattering increased attenuation by an average of 58% above that attributable to absorption alone, whereas in a highly turbid billabong the increase was 111%.
5. A distinguishing feature of the optical character of these billabongs, compared with previously studied water bodies in southern Australia, is the great contribution to light absorption made by the particulate humic material.  相似文献

Synopsis The continent of Africa has a wide variety of inland waters ranging from rift valley lakes to endorheic and coastal lakes, floodplains and rivers. This paper makes a preliminary comparison of the number of species in different eco-ethological sections of the reproductive guild categories of non-guarders, guarders and bearers in ancient African Great Lakes (Malawi, Victoria and Tanganyika), fluctuating endorheic lakes (Ngami, Chad and Chilwa), typical rivers (Orange-Vaal, Limpopo, Phongolo, Sabi-Lundi, Middle and Lower Zambezi, Kafue, Cunene, Okavango, Niger, Luongo, Lower Zaire) and wetlands (Okavango Delta and Kafue floodplain). The results indicate that the highest percentage of bearers and guarders is found in the ancient African Great Lakes, which are characterised by relatively predictable physico-chemical regimes, whereas a higher percentage of non-guarders is found in the rivers and wetlands, which have less predictable physico-chemical regimes. The management implications of this observation are discussed, and the usefulness of the species as a unit in ecology is assessed.  相似文献

Surface phytoplankton productivity measurements were carried out in morphologically complex Lake Rotoiti with the objective of defining variations between sites and seasons, and the dominant environmental drivers of these variations. Measurements were carried out monthly at two depths at each of three morphologically diverse stations for 1 year throughout the lake. Productivity at the surface of the shallow embayment was significantly higher in most months of the year compared with the surface of the other two stations but there were no significant differences from September to December 2004. There were no relationships between measured environmental variables and primary productivity or specific production. Inorganic nutrient concentrations at the surface of the shallow station were low throughout the whole year but at the other two stations they showed a typical pattern for monomictic lakes of higher levels during winter mixing and declining concentrations during thermal stratification. The high variability between sites found in this study indicates that it is important to account for local differences in productivity in morphologically diverse lakes, and that whole lake productivity estimates may vary greatly depending on the location and depth of productivity measurements.  相似文献

A small number of studies have demonstrated that settlement stage decapod crustaceans are able to detect and exhibit swimming, settlement and metamorphosis responses to ambient underwater sound emanating from coastal reefs. However, the intensity of the acoustic cue required to initiate the settlement and metamorphosis response, and therefore the potential range over which this acoustic cue may operate, is not known. The current study determined the behavioural response thresholds of four species of New Zealand brachyuran crab megalopae by exposing them to different intensity levels of broadcast reef sound recorded from their preferred settlement habitat and from an unfavourable settlement habitat. Megalopae of the rocky-reef crab, Leptograpsus variegatus, exhibited the lowest behavioural response threshold (highest sensitivity), with a significant reduction in time to metamorphosis (TTM) when exposed to underwater reef sound with an intensity of 90 dB re 1 μPa and greater (100, 126 and 135 dB re 1 μPa). Megalopae of the mud crab, Austrohelice crassa, which settle in soft sediment habitats, exhibited no response to any of the underwater reef sound levels. All reef associated species exposed to sound levels from an unfavourable settlement habitat showed no significant change in TTM, even at intensities that were similar to their preferred reef sound for which reductions in TTM were observed. These results indicated that megalopae were able to discern and respond selectively to habitat-specific acoustic cues. The settlement and metamorphosis behavioural response thresholds to levels of underwater reef sound determined in the current study of four species of crabs, enables preliminary estimation of the spatial range at which an acoustic settlement cue may be operating, from 5 m to 40 km depending on the species. Overall, these results indicate that underwater sound is likely to play a major role in influencing the spatial patterns of settlement of coastal crab species.  相似文献

New Zealand has a good Neogene plant fossil record. During the Miocene it was without high topography and it was highly maritime, meaning that its climate, and the resulting vegetation, would be controlled dominantly by zonal climate conditions. Its vegetation record during this time suggests the climate passed from an ever-wet and cool but frostless phase in the Early Miocene in which Nothofagus subgenus Brassospora was prominent. Then it became seasonally dry, with vegetation in which palms and Eucalyptus were prominent and fires were frequent, and in the mid-Miocene, it developed a dry-climate vegetation dominated by Casuarinaceae. These changes are reflected in a sedimentological change from acidic to alkaline chemistry and the appearance of regular charcoal in the record. The vegetation then changed again to include a prominent herb component including Chenopodiaceae and Asteraceae. Sphagnum became prominent, and Nothofagus returned, but mainly as the subgenus Fuscospora (presently restricted to temperate climates). This is interpreted as a return to a generally wet, but now cold climate, in which outbreaks of cold polar air and frost were frequent. The transient drying out of a small maritime island and the accompanying vegetation/climate sequence could be explained by a higher frequency of the Sub-Tropical High Pressure (STHP) cells (the descending limbs of the Hadley cells) over New Zealand during the Miocene. This may have resulted from an increased frequency of ‘blocking’, a synoptic situation which occurs in the region today. An alternative hypothesis, that the global STHP belt lay at a significantly higher latitude in the early Neogene (perhaps 55°S) than today (about 30°S), is considered less likely because of physical constraints on STHP belt latitude. In either case, the difference between the early Neogene and present situation may have been a response to an increased polar-equatorial temperature gradient. This contrasts with current climate models for the geological past in which the latitude of the High Pressure belt impact is held invariant though geological time.  相似文献

Relationships between water clarity, light attenuation, and concentration of suspended particulates are important in water optics and remote sensing, but are not well described yet, especially for optically complex turbid inland waters. In this study, based on 3-year data from Chinese lakes (Lake Taihu, Lake Chaohu, and Three Gorges reservoir), we propose a new approach to describe the inter-relationships of these bio-optical variables. This approach includes a pre-classification step of the waters into three types based on a semi-analytical parameter C s before establishing the relationships. Our results showed that the pre-classification of waters increased model accuracies both for Z SD (Secchi depth) versus K d (diffuse attenuation coefficient) and K d versus TSM (total suspended matter concentration). The quasi-theoretical model described better the relationship between Z SD and K d than the empirical model. For the K d versus TSM relationship, linear models proved suitable for the Type 2 and Type 3 waters, whereas the power function model gave a better fit for the Type 1 water. Testing of the proposed relations with an independent dataset showed mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) mostly below 30%. The findings of this study clarify the relationships between Z SD, K d, and TSM, and improve our bio-optical understanding of complex turbid inland waters.  相似文献
