To determine the criteria for the selection of an electrode suitable for a bio-fuel cell (BFC), five electrodes, i.e. silver, aluminum, nickel, stainless steel and carbon fiber cloth were investigated. The performance of the BFC according to the electrode material, including the generated voltage, current density and power density was observed. These results show that the materials used for constructing the electrodes affect the performance of the BFC. An impedance analysis was used to describe the characteristics of the electrodes in the solution. Equivalent circuits of each component such as solution, electrodes-solution interface and electrode were determined from the impedance data. The constant-phase element (CPE) model was applied for data analyzing. It was found that stainless steel, nickel and aluminum behaved like a polarized electrode which has a high electrode-solution interfacial impedance, while carbon fiber cloth and silver had a low impedance like a non-polarized electrode. The impedance data indicated that a higher interfacial impedance will result in a higher loading effect. The results can be summarized that the carbon fiber cloth electrode offers a good electron transfer in the system and thus supplies higher power to the external load.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed to assess the effects of subclinical hypothyroidism on body composition (BC). SUBJECTS: Thirty-one women (age: 37 +/- 9.9 years) with a wide range of body mass index (BMI) were studied. Subclinical hypothyroidism was defined by a basal TSH > or = 4 mU/L and/or TRH stimulated peak > or = 30 mU/L. MEASUREMENTS: For each subject, weight, height, BMI, multifrequency bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) and D2O and NaBr dilution tests were performed to assessed total body water (TBW) and extracellular water (ECW). Thyroid function (basal and TRH stimulated TSH, free T3, and free T4) were determined from fasting blood samples for all subjects. Total body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were used to measure fat mass (FM) and lean mass (Lean). RESULTS: The results of BIS were compared with the TBW and ECW estimated by the dilution techniques on the same individuals. The correlation was R2 = 0.65 for impedance at 5 kHz and ECW by NaBr and R2 = 0.72 for impedance at 100 kHz and TBW by D2O. Intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as differences between TBW and ECW measured by dilution methods. Percent of ECW and ICW were related to BMI (ANOVA, p < 0.001). No difference in TBW, body water distribution and body composition related to thyroid function was demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS: In our patients affected with subclinical hypothyroidism, with or without obesity, only obesity appeared related to TBW, ECW and ICW; the subclinical hypothyroidism, on the contrary, had no effect on compartments of body fluids. Bioimpedance is a valid tool to assess body fluid distribution in subclinical hypothyroidism.  相似文献

Shift in body fluid compartments after dehydration in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To investigate the influence of [Na+] in sweat on the distribution of body water during dehydration, we studied 10 volunteer subjects who exercised (40% of maximal aerobic power) in the heat [36 degrees C, less than 30% relative humidity (rh)] for 90-110 min to produce a dehydration of 2.3% body wt (delta TW). After dehydration, the subjects rested for 1 h in a thermoneutral environment (28 degrees C, less than 30% rh), after which time the changes in the body fluid compartments were assessed. We measured plasma volume, plasma osmolality, and [Na+], [K+], and [Cl-] in plasma, together with sweat and urine volumes and their ionic concentrations before and after dehydration. The change in the extracellular fluid space (delta ECF) was estimated from chloride distribution and the change in the intracellular fluid space (delta ICF) was calculated by subtracting delta ECF from delta TW. The decrease in the ICF space was correlated with the increase in plasma osmolality (r = -0.74, P less than 0.02). The increase in plasma osmolality was a function of the loss of free water (delta FW), estimated from the equation delta FW = delta TW - (loss of osmotically active substance in sweat and urine)/(control plasma osmolality) (r = -0.79, P less than 0.01). Free water loss, which is analogous to "free water clearance" in renal function, showed a strongly inverse correlation with [Na+] in sweat (r = -0.97, P less than 0.001). The proximal portions of axons of large anterior-horn cells were investigated in the lumbar cords of 10 normal human autopsy cases. Light-microscopically, 81 myelinated axons were observed to be connected with the cell body. Of the 81 axons, 78 emanated from the cell body and 3 others originated in the proximal part of primary dendrites. As for normal-looking neurons (n = 77), the length of the axon hillock plus initial segment was 64.0 +/- 12.3 microns (average +/- SEM), ranging from 47.5 to 110.0 microns, while the diameter of the thinnest portion of the initial segment was 2.40 +/- 0.30 microns (average +/- SEM), ranging from 1.32 to 3.92 microns. Electron-microscopically, the predominant organelles of the axon hillock were mitochondria, neurofilaments which merged into the axon and occasional granular endoplasmic reticulum. A few synaptic boutons were found on the surface of the axon hillock. The cell membrane of the initial segment consisted of a layer of electron-dense material (undercoating). The cytoplasm contained many neurofilaments, running parallel to the longitudinal axis of the initial segment. Among the neurofilaments, lysosomes, smooth endoplasmic reticulum, dense bodies and vesicular profiles as well as mitochondria were seen. At the beginning of the myelin sheath, the axoplasm contained mitochondria, many neurofilaments and occasional lysosomes.  相似文献

Studies were carried out in 29 healthy young adults in the Indian Army stationed in the plains and posted at an elevation of 3500 m for more than 6 months. After exposure to a low elevation in Delhi (260 m) for 3 weeks they were reinduced to a height of 3500 m. The subjects were divided into three groups, each of which was treated with either placebo or acetazolamide or spironolactone. The drug treatment was started immediately after their landing at high altitude and continued for 2 days only. Total body water, extracellular fluid, intracellular fluid, plasma volume, blood pH, PaO2, PaCO2 and blood viscosity were determined on exposure at Delhi and on re-induction to high altitude. Plasma volume was increased after the descent from high altitude and remained high for up to 21 day's study. This increased plasma volume may have some significance in the pathogenesis of pulmonary oedema. Total body water and intracellular fluid content were increased at 260 m elevation, while extracellular fluid decreased. On re-induction there was a decrease in total body water with no change in the extracellular fluid content.This paper was presented in part at the 17th annual conference of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, India held at Bangalore, January 2–4, 1986  相似文献

New in situ mouse model to quantify alveolar epithelial fluid clearance   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Because the availability of transgenic micemakes it possible to examine the contribution of single genes to invivo function, we developed a simple in situ mouse model that can beused to quantify isosmolar alveolar epithelial fluid clearance (AFC). Mice were killed, a tracheostomy was done, and then a test solution ofa 5% isosmolar albumin solution with 0.1 µCi of125I-labeled albumin was instilledvia the trachea into the distal air spaces of both lungs. Afterinstillation, the lungs were inflated to 7 cmH2O with 100%O2 and maintained at 37°C byplacing the animals under an infrared lamp. AFC was measured by theprogressive increase in concentration of labeled and unlabeled proteinover 1 h. The results indicated the following.1) Basal, unstimulated AFC in mouselungs was significantly faster than in ex vivo rat lungs (27 ± 5%in in situ mice vs. 11 ± 3% in ex vivo rat lungs; P < 0.05).2) Comparison of equivalent doses(104 M) of -adrenergicagonist (isoproterenol) and2-adrenergic agonists(terbutaline and salmeterol) indicated that stimulated clearanceoccurred only in presence of isoproterenol.3) Because atenolol, a specific1-antagonist, abolished theeffect of isoproterenol, the -adrenergic stimulation appears to bemediated by 1-receptors. Therate of AFC in nonperfused mouse lungs was significantly faster than inprior studies of nonperfused lungs in rats and sheep. Interestingly,the stimulated clearance rate in mice was similar to the fast rates ofAFC that we recently reported in patients recovering from hydrostaticpulmonary edema. This in situ model is a unique experimentalpreparation that can be readily used to quantify isosmolar epithelialfluid clearance in mice.

The objective of this study was to assess regional variations in the permeability of the salmon posterior intestine and to evaluate the effect of permeability enhancers as a basis for oral delivery of biologically active peptides. Proximal and distal portions of the posterior intestine of the chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were removed, mounted as flat sheets in Ussing chambers and superfused with trout Ringer's. Intestinal permeability was assessed under short-circuit conditions by measurement of 14C-mannitol (mucosal to serosal) flux. Tissues were treated either with the mucolytic agent dithiothreitol (10 mmol · l−1), the permeability enhancer sodium deoxycholate (5.0 mmol · l−1) or both and compared to untreated controls. Both proximal and distal control tissues had low permeabilities, but the distal region had a lower transepithelial electrical resistance and produced significantly less mucus. Treatment with either dithiothreitol or sodium deoxycholate alone reduced mucus adhering to tissue in both regions but did not increase permeability or change transepithelial electrical resistance. In the distal region, sequential treatment with both agents significantly reduced adhering mucus, decreased transepithelial electrical resistance, and increased tissue permeability. The salmon posterior intestine can be divided into proximal and distal regions. The distal region is more likely to have the necessary permeability and responsiveness to enhancement for the successful delivery of peptides or polar drugs. Accepted: 14 January 1997  相似文献

Objective: Sibutramine, a serotonin‐norepinephrine uptake inhibitor, has been used for treating obesity. However, its possible mechanisms involving gastric motility have not been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sibutramine on gastric accommodation and antral motility. Research Methods and Procedures: The study was performed in seven dogs with a stomach cannula and composed of two separate experiments: antral contractions and gastric tone. Each experiment included two sessions on 2 separate days in a randomized order: a control session and a treatment session with sibutramine (5 mg/kg per os) administrated 2 hours before the study. Results: Sibutramine significantly increased fasting gastric tone; the gastric volume in the fasting state at baseline was 103.8 ± 12.3 mL and significantly decreased to 35.3 ± 16.0 mL with sibutramine (p = 0.0075). Sibutramine also impaired gastric accommodation. The average postprandial gastric volume was 472.1 ± 16.7 mL in the control session and reduced to 302.2 ± 53.6 mL with sibutramine (p = 0.013). The average postprandial increase in gastric volume during the 60‐minute postprandial period with sibutramine was significantly lower than the corresponding values in the control session: 266.8 ± 46.1 vs. 393.9 ± 15.3 mL (p = 0.03). Sibutramine had no effects on postprandial antral contractions. Discussion: Sibutramine increases gastric tone and impairs gastric accommodation to an orally ingested meal. The inhibitory effect of sibutramine on gastric accommodation may partially explain the reduced food intake with sibutramine in patients with obesity.  相似文献

Studies were conducted on 29 male healthy subjects having no previous experience of living at high altitude. These subjects were divided into three groups, i.e., subjects treated with placebo, acetazolamide and spironolactone. These subjects were first studied in Delhi. The drug schedule was started 24 hour prior to the airlift of these subjects to an altitude of 3,500 m and was continued for 48 hour after arrival at high altitude. Total body water, extra cellular water, plasma volume, blood electrolytes, pH, pO2, pCO2 and blood viscosity were determined on 3rd and 12th day of their stay at high altitude. Total body water, extra cellular water intracellular water and plasma volume decreased on high altitude exposure. There was a further slight decrease in these compartments with acetazolamide and spironolactone. It was also observed that spironolactone drives out more water from the extracellular compartment. Loss of plasma water was also confirmed by increased plasma osmolality. Increase in arterial blood pH was noticed on hypoxic exposure but the increase was found less in acetazolamide and spironolactone cases. This decrease in pH is expected to result in better oxygen delivery to the tissues at the low oxygen tension. It was also confirmed because blood pO2 increased in both the groups. No significant change in plasma electrolytes was observed in subjects of various groups. Blood viscosity slightly increased on exposure to high altitude. The degree of rise was found less in the group treated with spironolactone. This study suggests that both the drugs are likely to be beneficial in ameliorating/prevention of AMS syndrome.  相似文献

Although serum/plasma has been the preferred source for identification of disease biomarkers, these efforts have been met with little success, in large part due the relatively small number of highly abundant proteins that render the reliable detection of low abundant disease-related proteins challenging due to the expansive dynamic range of concentration of proteins in this sample. Proximal fluid, the fluid derived from the extracellular milieu of tissues, contains a large repertoire of shed and secreted proteins that are likely to be present at higher concentrations relative to plasma/serum. It is hypothesized that many, if not all, proximal fluid proteins exchange with peripheral circulation, which has provided significant motivation for utilizing proximal fluids as a primary sample source for protein biomarker discovery. The present review highlights recent advances in proximal fluid proteomics, including the various protocols utilized to harvest proximal fluids along with detailing the results from mass spectrometry- and antibody-based analyses.  相似文献
