Watersheds within the Catskill Mountains, New York, receive among the highest rates of nitrogen (N) deposition in the northeastern United States and are beginning to show signs of N saturation. Despite similar amounts of N deposition across watersheds within the Catskill Mountains, rates of soil N cycling and N retention vary significantly among stands of different tree species. We examined the potential use of δ 15N of plants and soils as an indicator of relative forest soil N cycling rates. We analyzed the δ 15N of foliage, litterfall, bole wood, surface litter layer, fine roots and organic soil from single-species stands of American beech (Fagus grandifolia), eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), red oak (Quercus rubra), and sugar maple (Acer saccharum). Fine root and organic soil δ 15N values were highest within sugar maple stands, which correlated significantly with higher rates of net mineralization and nitrification. Results from this study suggest that fine root and organic soil δ 15N can be used as an indicator of relative rates of soil N cycling. Although not statistically significant, δ 15N was highest within foliage, wood and litterfall of beech stands, a tree species associated with intermediate levels of soil N cycling rates and forest N retention. Our results show that belowground δ 15N values are a better indicator of relative rates of soil N cycling than are aboveground δ 15N values.  相似文献

Concentrations and natural isotope abundance of total sulfur and nitrogen as well as sulfate and nitrate concentrations were measured in needles of different age classes and in soil samples of different horizons from a healthy and a declining Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) forest in the Fichtelgebirge (NE Bavaria, Germany), in order to study the fate of atmospheric depositions of sulfur and nitrogen compounds. The mean δ15N of the needles ranged between −3.7 and −2.1 ‰ and for δ34S a range between −0.4 and +0.9 ‰ was observed. δ34S and sulfur concentrations in the needles of both stands increased continuously with needle age and thus, were closely correlated. The δ15N values of the needles showed an initial decrease followed by an increase with needle age. The healthy stand showed more negative δ15N values in old needles than the declining stand. Nitrogen concentrations decreased with needle age. For soil samples at both sites the mean δ15N and δ34S values increased from −3 ‰ (δ15N) or +0.9 ‰ (δ34S) in the uppermost organic layer to about +4 ‰ (δ15N) or +4.5 ‰ (δ34S) in the mineral soil. This depth-dependent increase in abundance of 15N and 34S was accompanied by a decrease in total nitrogen and sulfur concentrations in the soil. δ15N values and nitrogen concentrations were closely correlated (slope −0.0061 ‰ δ15N per μmol eq N gdw −1), and δ34S values were linearly correlated with sulfur concentrations (slope −0.0576 ‰ δ34S per μmol eq S gdw −1). It follows that in the same soil samples sulfur concentrations were linearly correlated with the nitrogen concentrations (slope 0.0527), and δ34S values were linearly correlated with δ15N values (slope 0.459). A correlation of the sulfur and nitrogen isotope abundances on a Δ basis (which considers the different relative frequencies of 15N and 34S), however, revealed an isotope fractionation that was higher by a factor of 5 for sulfur than for nitrogen (slope 5.292). These correlations indicate a long term synchronous mineralization of organic nitrogen and sulfur compounds in the soil accompanied by element-specific isotope fractionations. Based on different sulfur isotope abundance of the soil (δ34S=0.9 ‰ for total sulfur of the organic layer was assumed to be equivalent to about −1.0 ‰ for soil sulfate) and of the atmospheric SO2 deposition (δ34S=2.0 ‰ at the healthy site and 2.3 ‰ at the declining site) the contribution of atmospheric SO2 to total sulfur of the needles was estimated. This contribution increased from about 20 % in current-year needles to more than 50 % in 3-year-old needles. The proportion of sulfur from atmospheric deposition was equivalent to the age dependent sulfate accumulation in the needles. In contrast to the accumulation of atmospheric sulfur compounds nitrogen compounds from atmospheric deposition were metabolized and were used for growth. The implications of both responses to atmospheric deposition are discussed.  相似文献

This study presents the latitudinal variation (from 60° 30′ N to 68° 2′ N latitude) of natural abundances of 15N in the foliage, humus and soils of boreal forests of Finland. Our results clearly showed that N concentration of the foliage did not change significantly with latitudes but their 15N values were significantly higher in higher latitude sites relative to that of the mid and lower latitude sites, indicating the different forms of N uptake at the higher latitudes compared to the lower latitudes. We assume that the higher foliage δ15N values of the higher latitudes trees might be due to either more openness of N cycle (greater proportional N losses) in these latitudes compared to the sites of southern latitudes (lower N losses) or the differences in their mycorrhizal associations. Regression analysis showed that the temperature was the main factor influencing the 15N natural abundance of humus and soil of all forest ecosystems, both before and after clear-cut, whereas rainfall was the main controlling factor to the foliage 15N. Possible reasons behind the increasing δ15N natural abundances of plants and soils with increasing latitudes are discussed in this paper. The clear-cut did not show any specific trend on the 15N fractionation in humus and soil, i.e. both 15N-enrichment and -depletion occurred after clear-cut.  相似文献

We used the natural abundance of 15N in soils in forests, pastures and cultivated lands in the Menagesha and Wendo-Genet areas of Ethiopia to make inferences about the N cycles in these ecosystems. Since we have described the history of these sites based on variations in 13C natural abundance, patterns of δ15N and δ13C values were compared to determine if shifts of 15N correlate with shifts of vegetation. At Menagesha, a > 500-yr-old planted forest, we found δ15N values from −8.8 to +3.5‰ in litter, from −3.5 to +4.5‰ in 0–10 cm soil layer, and from −1.5 to +6.8‰ at >20 cm soil depth. The low δ15N in litter and surface mineral soils suggests that a closed N cycle has operated for a long time. At this site, the low δ13C of the surface horizon and the high δ13C of the lower soil horizons is clear evidence of a long phase of C4 grass dominance or cultivation of C4 crops before the establishment of the forest >500 years ago. In contrast, at Wendo-Genet, high δ13C of soils reveals that most of the land has been uncovered by forests until recently. Soil δ15N was high throughout (3.4–9.8‰), and there were no major differences between forested, cultivated and pasture soils in δ15N values of surface mineral soils. The high δ15N values suggest that open N cycles operate in the Wendo-Genet area. From the points of view of soil fertility management, it is interesting that tall forest ecosystems with relatively closed N cycling could be established on the fairly steep slopes at Menagesha after a long period of grass vegetation cover or cultivation. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of the liquid pig manure (LM) used in organic farming on the natural abundance of 15N and 13C signatures in plant tissues have not been studied. We hypothesized that application of LM will (1) increase δ15N of plant tissues due to the high δ15N of N in LM as compared with soil N or inorganic fertilizer N, and (2) increase δ13C of plant tissues as a result of high salt concentration in LM that decreases stomatal conductance of plants. To test these hypotheses, variations in the δ15N and δ13C of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.) and chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramatuelle) with two different LMs (with δ15N of +15.6 and +18.2‰) applied at two rates (323 and 646 kg N ha-1 for cabbage and 150 and 300 kg N ha-1 for chrysanthemum), or urea (δ15N = -2.7‰) applied at the lower rate above for the respective species, in addition to the control (no N input) were investigated through a 60-day pot experiment. Application of LM significantly increased plant tissue δ15N (range +9.4 to +14.9‰) over the urea (+3.2 to +3.3‰) or control (+6.8 to 7.7‰) treatments regardless of plant species, strongly reflecting the δ15N of the N source. Plant tissue δ13C were not affected by the treatments for cabbage (range −30.8 to −30.2‰) or chrysanthemum (−27.3 to −26.8‰). However, cabbage dry matter production decreased while its δ13C increased with increasing rate of LM application or increasing soil salinity (P < 0.05), suggesting that salinity stress caused by high rate of LM application likely decreased stomatal conductance and limited growth of cabbage. Our study expanded the use of the δ15N technique in N source (organic vs. synthetic fertilizer) identification and suggested that plant tissue δ13C maybe a sensitive indicator of plant response to salinity stress caused by high LM application rates.  相似文献

Biosolids have been widely used for land reclamation, but information on their use in restoration, i.e., on less degraded areas, is scarce. Biosolids may be used to restore forest ecosystems by fostering tree establishment in degraded shrublands. Detailed knowledge on the effects of biosolid application is needed to optimize such practice. We evaluated the effect of different rates (0, 7.5 and 14.5 kg dry weight per plant) and types of biosolid application on the performance of Pinus halepensis and Quercus ilex seedlings, and operational costs. Biosolids increased seedling mortality in both species, particularly when seedlings were planted in direct contact with them. Mortality mostly occurred during the first year, and was probably favored by soil shrinking and salinity. Foliar and needle nitrogen concentration increased with biosolid rate in the short term, but biosolids affected negatively (P. halepensis), or had no effect (Q. ilex) on phosphorus and potassium concentration. Biosolids had a positive effect on P. halepensis growth, and a negative effect on Q. ilex growth at the highest rate when seedlings were in contact with biosolids. Cost of this type of biosolid application approximately doubled plantation cost, but were similar or cheaper that landfill disposal of biosolids. The lowest application rate showed the best balance between seedling response and costs for P. halepensis, whereas biosolid use cannot be recommended for Q. ilex.  相似文献

The symbiotic biological N2fixation by Acacia senegal was estimated using the 15N natural abundance (δ 15N) procedure on eight provenances collected from different environments and soil types grown in a clay soil in the Blue Nile region, Sudan. Balanites aegyptiaca (a non-legume) was used as a non-N2-fixing reference plant to allow 15N-based estimates of the proportion of the Acacia N derived from atmospheric N2 (Ndfa) to be calculated. Results show variation in leaf δ 15N between A. senegal and the reference plant and among years. The relative δ 15N values (‰) were higher in B. aegyptiaca than in the N2-fixing acacia provenances. Provenances originally collected from clay soils fixed little N in the first year, but the amount fixed increased as the trees aged. All provenances showed a decrease in δ 15N with age. The Ndfa varied between 24% (Mazmoom provenance) and 61% (Rahad provenance) 4 years after planting. There was no significant difference in δ 15N between provenance groups based on soil type or rainfall at original growing site. The amount of Ndfa increased significantly with age in all provenances. The above-ground contribution of fixed N to foliage growth in a 4-year-old A. senegal was highest in the Rahad sand–soil provenance (46.7 kg N ha−1) and lowest in the Mazmoom clay-soil provenance (28.7 kg N ha−1). Our study represents the first use of the δ 15N method for estimating the N input by A. senegal to the clay plain soils of the gum belt in the Sudan.  相似文献

Variations in crop grain and soil N isotope composition (δ15N) in relation to liquid hog manure (δ15N of total N was +5.1‰), solid cattle manure (+7.9‰) and chemical fertilizer (+0.7‰ for urea and −1.9‰ for ammonium phosphate) applications, and control (no fertilizer application) were examined through a 4-year crop rotation under field conditions. Canola (Brassica napus), hull-less barley (Hordeum vulgare), wheat (Triticum aestivum), and canola were grown sequentially from 2000 (year 1) to 2003 (year 4). From year 2, hog manure or chemical fertilizers, but not cattle manure, treatments increased grain N concentrations over the control. Grain δ15N (+0.3 to +2.5‰) of crops applied with chemical fertilizers was lower than those in the other treatments, reflecting the effects of the N source with a lower δ15N, while the manure treatments tended to increase grain δ15N. The higher grain δ15N of crops applied with hog manure (+5.6 to +8.4‰) than those applied with cattle manure (+2.2 to +4.1‰) reflected the higher N availability of liquid hog manure (up to 70% as NH 4 + ) than solid cattle manure (99% organic N) and higher potentials for ammonia volatilization loss in hog manure rather than differences in manure δ15N signatures. Soil total- and extractable-N concentrations and δ15N tended to vary with the application of N sources with different N isotope composition and availability. Our study expanded the application of the δ15N technique for detecting N source (organic vs chemical) effects on N isotopic composition to field conditions and across a 4-year rotation, and revealed that N availability played a greater role than the δ15N signature of N sources in determining crop δ15N under the studied conditions. Summary Plants from agricultural and natural upland ecosystem were investigated for15N content to evaluate the role of symbiotic N2-fixation in the nitrogen nutrition of soybean. Increased yields and lower δ15N values of nodulating soybeansvs, non-nodulating isolines gave semi-quantitative estimates of N2 fixation. A fairly large discrepancy was found between estimations by δ15N and by N yield at 0 kg N/ha of fertilizer. More precise estimates were made by following changes in plant δ15N when fertilizer δ15N was varied near15N natural abundance level. Clearcut linear relationships between δ15N values of whole plants and of fertilizer were obtained at 30 kg N/ha of fertilizer for three kinds of soils. In experimental field plots, nodulating soybeans obtained 13±1% of their nitrogen from fertilizer, 66±8% from N2 fixation and 21±10% from soil nitrogen in Andosol brown soil; 30%, 16% and 54% in Andosol black soil; 7%, 77% and 16% in Alluvial soil, respectively. These values for N2 fixation coincided with each corresponding estimation by N yield method. Other results include: 1)15N content in upland soils and plants was variable, and may reflect differences in the mode of mineralization of soil organics, and 2) nitrogen isotopic discrimination during fertilizer uptake (δ15N of plant minus fertilizer) ranged from −2.2 to +4.9‰ at 0–30 kg N/ha of fertilizer, depending on soil type and plant species. The proposed method can accurately and relatively simply establish the importance of symbiotic nitrogen fixation for soybeans growing in agricultural settings.  相似文献

Natural 15N abundance measurements of ecosystem nitrogen (N) pools and 15N pool dilution assays of gross N transformation rates were applied to investigate the potential of δ15N signatures of soil N pools to reflect the dynamics in the forest soil N cycle. Intact soil cores were collected from pure spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and mixed spruce-beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stands on stagnic gleysol in Austria. Soil δ15N values of both forest sites increased with depth to 50 cm, but then decreased below this zone. δ15N values of microbial biomass (mixed stand: 4.7 ± 0.8‰, spruce stand: 5.9 ± 0.9‰) and of dissolved organic N (DON; mixed stand: 5.3 ± 1.7‰, spruce stand: 2.6 ± 3.3‰) were not significantly different; these pools were most enriched in 15N of all soil N pools. Denitrification represented the main N2O-producing process in the mixed forest stand as we detected a significant 15N enrichment of its substrate NO3 (3.6 ± 4.5‰) compared to NH4+ (−4.6 ± 2.6‰) and its product N2O (−11.8 ± 3.2‰). In a 15N-labelling experiment in the spruce stand, nitrification contributed more to N2O production than denitrification. Moreover, in natural abundance measurements the NH4+ pool was slightly 15N-enriched (−0.4 ± 2.0 ‰) compared to NO3 (−3.0 ± 0.6 ‰) and N2O (−2.1 ± 1.1 ‰) in the spruce stand, indicating nitrification and denitrification operated in parallel to produce N2O. The more positive δ15N values of N2O in the spruce stand than in the mixed stand point to extensive microbial N2O reduction in the spruce stand. Combining natural 15N abundance and 15N tracer experiments provided a more complete picture of soil N dynamics than possible with either measurement done separately.  相似文献

Stable isotopes can be used to elucidate ecological relationships in community and trophic studies. Findings are calibrated against baselines, e.g. from a producer or primary consumer, assumed to act as a reference to the isotopic context created by spatio-temporal attributes such as geography, climate, nutrient, and energy sources. The ability of an organism to accurately represent a community base depends on how, and over what time-scale, it assimilates ambient materials. Freshwater mussels have served as references for trophic studies of freshwater communities and as indicators of change in nutrient pollution load or source. Their suitability as reference animals has not yet been fully explored, however. We conducted a series of studies examining the suitability of freshwater mussels as isotopic baselines, using their ability to reflect variation in ambient nutrient loads as a case scenario. (1) We analyzed bivalve foot tissue δ15N and δ13C from 22 stream reaches in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, USA to show that compositions varied substantially among locations. Site mean bivalve δ13C values correlated with site ambient particulate organic matter (POM) δ13C values, and site mean bivalve δ15N values correlated with site ambient water dissolved δ15N-NO3 values. (2) Similarity of results among sample types demonstrated that the minimally invasive hemolymph sample is a suitable substitute for foot tissue in δ15N analyses, and that small sample sizes generate means representative of a larger population. Both findings can help minimize the impact of sampling on imperiled freshwater mussel populations. (3) In a bivalve transplantation study we showed that hemolymph δ15N compositions responded to a shift in ambient dissolved δ15N-NO3, although slowly. The tissue turnover time for bivalve hemolymph was 113 days. We conclude that bivalves serve best as biomonitors of chronic, rather than acute, fluctuations in stream nutrient loads, and provide initial evidence of their suitability as time-integrated isotopic baselines for community studies.  相似文献

Carbon isotopic composition of soils subjected to C3–C4 vegetation change can be used to estimate C turnover in bulk soil and in soil organic matter (SOM) pools with fast and intermediate turnover rates. We hypothesized that the biological availability of SOM pools is inversely proportional to their thermal stability, so that thermogravimetry can be used to separate SOM pools with contrasting turnover rates. Soil samples from a field plot cultivated for 10.5 years with the perennial C4 plant Miscanthus×gigantheus were analyzed by thermogravimetry coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Three SOM fractions were distinguished according to the differential weight losses and exothermic or endothermic reactions measured by DSC. The δ13C and δ15N values of these three fractions obtained by gradual soil heating were measured by IRMS. The weight losses up to 190 °C mainly reflected water evaporation because no significant C and N losses were detected and δ13C and δ15N values of the residual SOM remained unchanged. The δ13C values (−16.4‰) of SOM fraction decomposed between 190 and 390 °C (containing 79% of total soil C) were slightly closer to that of the Miscanthus plant tissues (δ13C = −11.8‰) compared to the δ13C values (−16.8‰) of SOM fraction decomposed above 390 °C containing the residual 21% of SOM. Thus, the C turnover in the thermally labile fraction was faster than that in thermally stable fractions, but the differences were not very strong. Therefore, in this first study combining TG-DSC with isotopic analysis, we conclude that the thermal stability of SOM was not very strongly related to biological availability of SOM fractions. In contrast to δ13C, the δ15N values strongly differed between SOM fractions, suggesting that N turnover in the soil was different from C turnover. More detailed fractionation of SOM by thermal analysis with subsequent isotopic analysis may improve the resolution for δ13C.  相似文献

Anthropogenic N deposition may change soil conditions in forest ecosystems as demonstrated in many studies of coniferous forests, whereas results from deciduous forests are relatively scarce. Therefore the influence of N deposition on several variables was studied in situ in 45 oak-dominated deciduous forests along a N deposition gradient in southern Sweden, where the deposition ranged from 10 to 20 kg N ha−1 year−1. Locally estimated NO 3 deposition, as measured with ion-exchange resins (IER) on the soil surface, and grass N concentration (%) were positively correlated with earlier modelled regional N deposition. Furthermore, the δ15N values of grass and uppermost soil layers were negatively correlated with earlier modelled N deposition. The data on soil NO 3 , measured with IER in the soil, and grass N concentration suggest increased soil N availability as a result of N deposition. The δ15N values of grass and uppermost soil layers indicate increased nitrification rates in high N deposition sites, but no large downward movements of NO 3 in these soils. Only a few sites had NO 3 concentrations exceeding 1 mg N l−1 in soil solution at 50 cm depth, which showed that N deposition to these acid oak-dominated forests has not yet resulted in extensive leaching of N. The δ15N enrichment factor was the variable best correlated with NO 3 concentrations at 50 cm and is thus a variable that potentially may be used to predict leaching of NO 3 from forest soils.  相似文献

Addressing spatial variability in nitrogen (N) availability in the Central Brazilian Amazon, we hypothesized that N availability varies among white-sand vegetation types (campina and campinarana) and lowland tropical forests (dense terra-firme forests) in the Central Brazilian Amazon, under the same climate conditions. Accordingly, we measured soil and foliar N concentration and N isotope ratios (δ15N) throughout the campina-campinarana transect and compared to published dense terra-firme forest results. There were no differences between white-sand vegetation types in regard to soil N concentration, C:N ratio and δ15N across the transect. Both white-sand vegetation types showed very low foliar N concentrations and elevated foliar C:N ratios, and no significant difference between site types was observed. Foliar δ15N was depleted, varying from −9.6 to 1.6‰ in the white-sand vegetations. The legume Aldina heterophylla had the highest average δ15N values (−1.5‰) as well as the highest foliar N concentration (2.1%) while the non-legume species had more depleted δ15N values and the average foliar N concentrations varied from 0.9 to 1.5% among them. Despite the high variation in foliar δ15N among plants, a significant and gradual 15N-enrichment in foliar isotopic signatures throughout the campina–campinarana transect was observed. Individual plants growing in the campinarana were significantly enriched in 15N compared to those in campina. In the white-sand N-limited ecosystems, the differentiation of N use seems to be a major cause of variations observed in foliar δ15N values throughout the campina–campinarana transect.  相似文献

The δ15N natural abundance (‰) of the total soil N pool varies at the landscape level, but knowledge on short-range variability and consequences for the reliability of isotopic methods are poorly understood. The short-range spatial variability of soil δ15N natural abundance as revealed by the 15N abundance in spring barley and N2-fixing pea was measured within the 0.15–4 m scale at flowering and at maturity. The short-range spatial variability of soil δ15N natural abundance and symbiotic nitrogen fixation were high at both growth stages. Along a 4-m row, the δ15N natural abundance in barley reference plants varied up to 3.9‰, and sometimes this variability was observed even between plants grown only 30 cm apart. The δ15N natural abundance in pea varied up to 1.4‰ within the 4-m row. The estimated percentage of nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) varied from 73–89% at flowering and from 57–95% at maturity. When increasing the sampling area from 0.01 m2 (single plants) and up to 0.6 m2 (14 plants) the %Ndfa coefficient of variation (CV) declined from 5 to 2% at flowering and from 12 to 2% at maturity. The implications of the short-range variability in δ15N natural-abundance are that estimates of symbiotic N2-fixation can be obtained from the natural abundance method if at least half a square meter of crop and reference plants is sampled for the isotopic analysis. In fields with small amounts of representative reference crops (weeds) it might be necessary to sow in reference crop species to secure satisfying N2-fixation estimates.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in foliage nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) concentrations and δ15N and δ13C ratios were monitored during a year in Erica arborea, Myrtus communis and Juniperus communis co-occurring at a natural CO2 spring (elevated [CO2], about 700 μmol mol−1) and at a nearby control site (ambient [CO2], 360 μmol mol−1) in a Mediterranean environment. Leaf N concentration was lower in elevated [CO2] than in ambient [CO2] for M. communis, higher for J. communis, and dependent on the season for E. arborea. Leaf C concentration was negatively affected by atmospheric CO2 enrichment, regardless of the species. C/N ratio varied concomitantly to N. Leaves in elevated [CO2] showed lower δ13C, and therefore likely lower water use efficiencies than leaves at the control site, regardless of the species, suggesting substantial photosynthetic acclimation under long-term CO2-enriched atmosphere. Leaves of E. arborea showed lower values of δ15N under elevated [CO2], but this was not the case of M. communis and J. communis foliage. The use of the resources and leaf chemical composition are affected by elevated [CO2], but such an effect varies during the year, and is species-dependent. The seasonal dependency and species specificity suggest that plants are able to exploit different available water and N resources within Mediterranean sites. δ13C and δ15N measurements are still poorly conducted in benthic invertebrate larvae. To assess the δ13C and δ15N changes occurring after a dietary shift, experiments were conducted on veliger larvae of Crepidula fornicata fed with two cultured microalgae (Isochrysis galbana and Pavlova lutheri) of known isotopic composition, 13C-enriched and 15N-depleted compared to the initial values of the larvae. Rapid changes in larval δ13C and δ15N were observed after the dietary shift, with an increase in δ13C and a decrease in δ15N. After 19 days of feeding, isotopic equilibrium was still not reached, a period which is close to the duration of the pelagic life of the larvae. This implies that the isotopic composition measured in field-collected larvae might only partly reflect actual larval feeding but also the parental isotopic signature, especially during the early developmental stages. Isotopic measurements in marine invertebrate larvae should thus be interpreted cautiously. In planktonic food web investigations, the study of field-collected larvae of different size/developmental stage may reduce potential misinterpretations.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify the sources and depth of water uptake by 15-years old Quercus suber L. trees in southern Portugal under a Mediterranean climate, measuring δ18O and δD in the soil–plant-atmosphere continuum. Evidence for hydraulic lift was substantiated by the daily fluctuations observed in Ψs at 0.4 and 1 m depth and supported by similar δ18O values found in tree xylem sap, soil water in the rhizosphere and groundwater. From 0.25 m down to a depth of 1 m, δD trends differed according to vegetation type, showing a more depleted value in soil water collected under the evergreen trees (−47‰) than under dead grasses (−35‰). The hypothesis of a fractionation process occurring in the soil due to diffusion of water vapour in the dry soil is proposed to explain the more depleted soil δD signature observed under trees. Hydraulically lifted water was estimated to account for 17–81% of the water used during the following day by tree transpiration at the peak of the drought season, i.e., 0.1–14 L tree−1 day−1. Significant relationships found between xylem sap isotopic composition and leaf water potential in early September emphasized the positive impact of the redistribution of groundwater in the rhizosphere on tree water status.  相似文献

The natural abundance of 15N in plant biomass has been used to infer how N dynamics change with elevated atmospheric CO2 and changing water availability. However, it remains unclear if atmospheric CO2 effects on plant biomass 15N are driven by CO2-induced changes in soil moisture. We tested whether 15N abundance (expressed as δ15N) in plant biomass would increase with increasing soil moisture content at two atmospheric CO2 levels. In a greenhouse experiment we grew sunflower (Helianthus annuus) at ambient and elevated CO2 (760 ppm) with three soil moisture levels maintained at 45, 65, and 85% of field capacity, thereby eliminating potential CO2-induced soil moisture effects. The δ15N value of total plant biomass increased significantly with increased soil moisture content at both CO2 levels, possibly due to increased uptake of 15N-rich organic N. Although not adequately replicated, plant biomass δ15N was lower under elevated than under ambient CO2 after adjusting for plant N uptake effects. Thus, increases in soil moisture can increase plant biomass δ15N, while elevated CO2 can decrease plant biomass δ15N other than by modifying soil moisture.  相似文献

The effects of immediately adjacent agricultural fertilization on nitrogen (N) at upland forest edges have not been previously studied. Our objective was to determine whether N from fertilized agriculture enters northern Idaho forest edges and significantly impacts their N status. We stratified 27 forest edge sampling sites by the N fertilization history of the adjacent land: current, historical, and never. We measured N stable isotopes (δ15N), N concentration (%N), and carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios of conifer tree and deciduous shrub foliage, shrub roots, and bulk soil, as well as soil available N. Conifer foliage δ15N and %N, shrub root δ15N, and bulk soil N were greater and soil C/N ratios lower (P < 0.05) at forest edges than interiors, regardless of adjacent fertilization history. For shrub foliage and bulk soil δ15N, shrub root %N and C/N ratios, and soil nitrate, significant edge–interior differences were limited to forests bordering lands that had been fertilized currently or historically. Foliage and soil δ15N were most enriched at forest edges bordering currently fertilized agriculture, suggesting that these forests are receiving N fertilizer inputs. Shrub root %N was greater at forest edges bordering currently fertilized agriculture than at those bordering grasslands that had never been fertilized (P = 0.01). Elevated N at forest edges may increase vegetation growth, as well as susceptibility to disease and insects. The higher N we found at forest edges bordering agriculture may also be found elsewhere, given similar agricultural practices in other regions and the prevalence of forest fragmentation.  相似文献
