The musculature of two species of the gastrotrich taxon Dasydytidae, Dasydytes (Dasydytes) goniathrix and Haltidytes crassus, was investigated and described using phalloidin staining, confocal microscopy and computer-aided three-dimensional data analysis. Dasydytidae is a peculiar taxon of freshwater Gastrotricha, containing species that are characterized by different adaptations to a semiplanktonic lifestyle, a rather uncommon feature among primarily benthic Gastrotricha. Like other dasydytid species studied so far, D. goniathrix and H. crassus possess a system of movable cuticular spines with an associated system of somatic oblique and segmented lateral muscles. The presence of other somatic (dorsodermal muscles R1 and R2) and visceral muscles (musculi ventrales, m. ventrolaterales, m. dorsales, m. helicoidales) known from a wide range of gastrotrich species was confirmed. Regarded from a functional perspective, the earlier proposed antagonistic role of oblique muscles (as spine abductors) and segmented lateral muscles (as adductors) is questioned for the species studied herein. Alternatively, our structural and behavioral observations suggest that muscular spine abduction in D. goniathrix is brought about by synergistic contraction of the musculi obliqua and m. laterales, and a passive adduction due to muscle relaxation and elastic recoil of the trunk and cuticle. For H. crassus, we hypothesize active muscular spine abduction by contraction of the musculi obliqua plus the last segment of m. laterales accompanied by severe cuticle deformations close to the spine insertions. Adduction is achieved by cuticle reformation due to elasticity and increase in tissue pressure brought about by muscle action, possibly of enforced dorsodermal muscles. The newly obtained and published muscular data of further gastrotrich species were gathered in a species-character matrix. Based on this data set, a maximum parsimony analysis of representatives of the Dasydytidae has been conducted. According to this analysis, there are three well-supported monophyletic lineages within likewise monophyletic Dasydytidae. The first lineage comprises the taxa Anacanthoderma, Stylochaeta and Chitonodytes, the second comprises Dasydytes, Setopus and Ornamentula, and the third represents the taxon Haltidytes. Relationships between these clades could be resolved but are only weakly supported. The new phylogenetic hypothesis is used to reconstruct the ancestral character pattern and to infer possible evolutionary transformations within the Dasydytidae.  相似文献

Fluorescence-labelled phalloidin in combination with confocal laser scanning microscopy (cLSM) has been used to reconstruct the body musculature in Encentrum mucronatum and Dicranophorus forcipatus in order to gain insight into the architecture of body musculature in representatives of the hitherto uninvestigated Dicranophoridae.

In both species, a system of outer circular and inner longitudinal muscles has been found. In E. mucronatum, seven circular muscles (musculi circulares I–VII) and six paired longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales I–VI) have been identified. In D. forcipatus, eight circular muscles (musculi circulares I–VIII) and nine paired longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales I–IX) are present. In both species, some of the longitudinal muscles span the whole specimen, while others are shorter and connect head and trunk or foot and trunk. Differences in shape and extension of the circular muscles in both species are related to differences in structure of the trunk integument.

Surveying the literature on rotifer musculature, muscles identified in this study are homologised across Rotifera and given individual names. Based on the study of E. mucronatum and D. forcipatus and previous studies on other rotifers, a system of musculature in the ground pattern of Ploima comprising at least three circular muscles (pars coronalis, corona sphincter, musculus circumpedalis) and three pairs of longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales ventrales, musculi longitudinales dorsales and musculi longitudinales capitum) is suggested.  相似文献

A new species belonging to a new genus of Monogenoidea was found on the gills of Euleptorhamphus viridis from the Indian Ocean. The opisthohaptor of the new genus consists of two medially overlapping rows of clamps situated on a double fold along the oblique posterior margin of the body. Clamp are of Microcotyle type, their springs having accessory pieces. Three pairs of larval hooks are present. The genital atrium is armed with three groups of spines. The first group comprises spines surrounding the female aperture; the second one surrounds the cirrus in an incomplete circle; the third group consists of two lateral groups of spines arising from two muscular pad-like structures. Vagina armed with a chitionous spine opens on the right-hand side which is longer than the left-hand one. Behind the U-shaped ovarium vitellaria merge in an undifferentiated mass and completely cover the branches of the intestine and the testes. The new genus is close to the genera Chlamydaxine Unnithan, 1957 and Axine Abildgaard, 1794 differing from the former by an armed genital atrium and from the latter by two medially overlapping rows of clamps.  相似文献

Rabbits infected with two strains of T. (T.) brucei showed an increase in the levels of a naturally occurring serum autoantibody directed against a component of the fibrin/fibrinogen system. This anti-F autoantibody is IgM throughout the infection. Absorption studies suggest that it reacts with one or more hidden determinants which are exposed after attachment of several species of fibrinogen molecule to red cell membranes. Absorption with autologous fibrin suggest the presence of the same determinant on the fibrin matrix after polymerisation of fibrinogen by thrombin. The antibody does not appear to react with fibrinogen in the circulation.

There is no evidence that this autoantibody causes any direct pathological change in the rabbit although secondary effects may be important. The antibody may have a beneficial effect by forming complexes with any fibrin deposited in tissues thereby enhancing its phagocytosis and rapid removal from the circulatory system.  相似文献

The Teloschistaceae is a widespread family with considerable morphological and ecological heterogeneity across genera and species groups. In order to provide a comprehensive molecular phylogeny for this family, phylogenetic analyses were carried out on sequences from the nuclear ribosomal ITS region obtained from 114 individuals that represent virtually all main lineages of Teloschistaceae. Our study confirmed the polyphyly of Caloplaca, Fulgensia and Xanthoria, and revealed that Teloschistes is probably non-monophyletic. We also confirm here that species traditionally included in Caloplaca subgenus Gasparrinia do not form a monophyletic entity. Caloplaca aurantia, C. carphinea and C. saxicola s. str. groups were recovered as monophyletic. The subgenera Caloplaca and Pyrenodesmia were also polyphyletic. In the subgenus Caloplaca, the traditionally recognized C. cerina group was recovered as monophyletic. Because this study is based solely on ITS, to maximize taxon sampling, the inclusion of phylogenetic signal from ambiguously aligned regions in MP (recoded INAASE and arc characters) resulted in the most highly supported phylogenetic reconstruction, compared with Bayesian inference restricted to alignable sites.  相似文献

Fourteen herbarium specimens of Polytrichadelphus aristatus (Polytrichaceae, Musci) from the northern Andes were found to be colonized by ascomycetes. Thirty fungal specimens are indicated representing nine species and six genera. They belong to the first records of bryophilous fungi of northern South America. Five taxa are proposed as new: the genus Aphanotria, and the species A. paradoxa, Bryochiton macrosporus, Bryorella imitans, and Massarina polytrichadelphi. Most frequently found were Rogellia triseptata with six and Bryochiton macrosporus with five records. Four species develop their ascomata between the photosynthetic leaf lamellae, three are immersed within the abaxial side of the leaf nerve and two grow below the adaxial cuticle. The hypocrealean A. paradoxa, which has huge but almost invisible ascomata, merits special attention. Apart from a pronounced rostrum, these are completely immersed within the leaf nerve but longitudinally orientated occupying a type of microniche hitherto unknown. Hyphae of several species attack the thick-walled stereids of the leaf nerve and strongly contribute to leaf decomposition. Polytrichadelphus aristatus has an assemblage of parasitic ascomycetes quite different from that of P. magellanicus from southern South America.  相似文献

Apophua simplicipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is a common parasitoid of the oblique banded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in organically managed apple orchards in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. The biological characteristics of a laboratory colony of A. simplicipes were studied. When held at 15 and 25°C and provided with honey water, individual females survived an average of 60.6±6.1 and 29.8±4.7 days, oviposited 196.7±50.7 and 326.6±51.3 eggs and parasitized a total of 163.4±40.4 and 229.4±35.8 hosts, respectively. Females oviposited into first through fourth instar oblique banded leafrollers, with significantly more parasitism occurring in the first two instars compared to the third and fourth instars. No parasitoid larvae survived past the first larval stage in parasitized fourth instar hosts. Apophua simplicipes did not parasitize larvae of three-lined leafroller, Pandemis limitata (Robinson) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) which is sympatric with oblique banded leafrollers in orchards in the southern interior of British Columbia. Female predation and host feeding from wounds on early instars of both leafroller species was observed under laboratory conditions. In addition, early instar hosts exited diet feeding sites in response to the probing activity of the ovipositing wasps. A similar escape reaction in the orchard may cause a leafroller larva to move away from its feeding site, making it more vulnerable to predation or movement off the tree. Apophua simplicipes larvae emerged from fifth and sixth instar hosts. Parasitized oblique banded leafroller hosts consumed significantly less meridic diet than unparasitized female larvae from fifth instar through to parasitoid emergence or leafroller pupation. Our laboratory results suggest that A. simplicipes may reduce field populations of oblique banded leafroller and decrease pest feeding damage.  相似文献

South Andean Loasas (Blumenbachia, Caiophora, Loasa, Scyphanthus) are a monophyletic group of taxa within Loasaceae subfam. Loasoideae, comprising some 100 species, 49 of which are investigated here. They retain a many-layered testa in the mature seeds and usually have passive transfer testas with complex, spongiose wall outgrowths. Additional modifications concern the undulations of the testa epidermis, presence or absence of the outer periclinal wall, secondary sculpturing, the presence or absence of spines, warts and finally spongiose structures on the anticlinal walls of the testa epidermis and the inner periclinal wall. Seeds of the widespread “deeply pitted” type are plesiomorphic, while various subclades of South Andean Loasas have derivations underscoring their relationships and confirming the relationships found with molecular markers and other morphological characters. The genus Blumenbachia has either seeds with a many-layered testa forming longitudinal lamellae (sect. Angulatae), or balloon seeds with a loose outer testa layer and spongiose wall outgrowths on the inner periclinal walls (sect. Blumenbachia and sect. Gripidea) and is clearly monophyletic. Loasa s.str. (ser. Loasa, ser. Macrospermae, ser. Floribundae, ser. Deserticolae) is characterized by the presence of a subterminal hilum or hilar scar and one subgroup (ser. Loasa, ser. Macrospermae) by very large and heavy seeds with a collapsed testa. L. ser. Pinnatae, ser. Acaules, ser. Volubiles, Scyphanthus and Caiophora share more or less one seed types with minor modifications. Within Caiophora various derivations are observed, of which the gradual loss of the secondary sculpture of the inner periclinal wall is the most striking one. Anemochoria is the most widespread dispersal mechanism in South Andean Loasas and is achieved in at least five structurally different ways.  相似文献

This study examined predation by the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, within intertidal Spartina alterniflora (Loisel) marshes of Dauphin Island, Alabama. Species and size preferences displayed by the predator when foraging within the marsh were investigated using nektonic, epifaunal, and infaunal prey populations including Fundulus similis Baird and Girard, Littorina irrorata Say, and Geukensia demissa Dillwyn.

Short-term field experiments involving the use of predator inclusion cages, in which the relative abundances of all prey species and the density of macrophyte vegetation were manipulated, indicated that mean mortality differed significantly among species. Blue crabs exhibited a distinct species preference for Littorina, and to a lesser extent, for Fundulus. However, the predator rarely choses infaunal individuals. Within predator inclusion cages, size selection by the crabs among three size classes of each prey was evident for Littorina and Fundulus but not for Geukensia. Blue crabs tended to select intermediate-sized snails and large fish while not exhibiting a size preference for infaunal bivalves.

In the marsh, mean percentage of the Littorina population within the 14–18 mm size class exhibited an increased mortality as compared to two other size classes, which was negatively correlated with increasing tidal height. Such a relationship may have been due to a decreasing gradient of crab predation associated with increasing tidal height. Geukensia size class distributions showed little evidence of differences along the tidal height gradient. No data are available for Fundulus, a mobile species which would not experience such differential predation along a marsh gradient.

In comparing crab predation patterns among prey species, it is apparent that Callinectes utilizes prey species differentially. Such differential utilization may be based on optimization of energy yield and minimization of energy expenditure. Thus, the preference of blue crabs for nektonic and epifaunal prey is hypothesized to be the result of a smaller energy expediture as a result of the crab's visual evaluation of these prey. Infaunal prey species (e.g., Geukensia) require a greater energy investment because of the necessity of excavating the prey item. Such prey also allow little selection by size because of being cryptic.  相似文献

Eight species of Chrysolina have been chromosomally studied in male individuals from Central Europe, South France and the Urals, in Russia. Ch. rufa had 2n = 23, Ch. purpurascens crassimargo 2n = 24 and a meioformula of 11 + Xyp, Ch. globosa and Ch. bigorrensis 12 + Xyp, Ch. umbratilis 2n = 30 and 14 + XYp, a new non-chiasmate sex-chromosome system with both male sex-chromosomes of large size, Ch. cf. subcostata 12 + XYp with large sex-chromosomes also, Ch. interstincta 2n = 40 and 19 + Xyp, and Ch. obscurella 2n = 47. The taxonomic implications of these findings are discussed in relation with the current subgeneric classification of Chrysolina and principally that of the subgenera Colaphoptera, Sphaerochrysolina, Pleurosticha, Chalcoidea and Threnosoma.  相似文献

Climatic oscillations influence the distribution of species in time. Thermophilic species survived the ice ages in refugia around the Mediterranean. Northern Africa is one of the possibly important refugia. In this study we test the genetic differentiation between northern African and European populations, using the marbled white butterfly species complex, Melanargia galathea/M. lachesis, as a model. We studied 18 allozyme loci in 876 individuals from 23 populations representing a major part of Europe (northern Spain to Romania) and the western part of northern Africa (Atlas Mountains). The African populations resemble the European ones in allelic richness; their genetic diversity is higher than in Europe. Cluster analysis discriminated five European genetic groups: M. lachesis, a western European lineage, and three eastern European lineages. However, the African samples did not form a separate cluster within this phenogram, but clustered randomly within the Balkan/southeastern European groups. The genetic differentiation among the African populations (FST 8.8%) was higher than that within any of the European lineages (FST 2.6–5.5%). The high genetic diversity and the relatively strong differentiation of the four African populations sampled in a comparatively limited area of the Atlas Mountains indicate that the most probable origin of M. galathea is northern Africa, with its sibling species, M. lachesis, evolving in parallel in Iberia. Most probably, M. galathea colonised Europe first during the Eem interglacial, some 130 ky ago. Since M. lachesis must have existed on the Iberian peninsula during that period already, M. galathea should have reached Europe via Italy. The genetic differentiation to distinct groups in Europe most probably evolved during the following Würm glacial period.  相似文献

Angiostrongylus mackerrasae and A. cantonensis are closely related and their status as distinct species was tested by experimental hybridization. Hybridization between A. mackerrasae and A. cantonensis was observed and the morphology of the F1 hybrids was found to be intermediate between that of the parental species which suggests strongly that A. mackerrasae and A. cantonensis are both valid species. However, male F1 hybrids were sterile, whereas females were fertile; no evidence of parthenogenesis or other form of asexual reproduction were observed in either species. It is suggested that A. mackerrasae and A. cantonensis may cross breed in nature.  相似文献

The corticioid basidiomycete Peniophorella praetermissa has long been regarded as a morphologically variable species complex. An ITS-based phylogenetic study based on a worldwide sampling was carried out using parsimony and Bayesian inference. The resulting trees feature three major clades, further divided into well-supported subclades. These could be considered as distinct species, a contention that is further supported by crossing test data. Only two out of the eight phylogenetic lineages identified can be distinctly morphologically characterized: P. odontiaeformis and P. subpraetermissa. P. odontiaeformis is an odontioid species with a paleotropical distribution whereas the taxa in the remaining subclades have smooth basidiomata and are distributed in temperate areas. P. subpraetermissa is known only from the type collection and is distinguished microscopically by its reddish brown apically encrustated cystidia. Taxa in the remaining subclades are impossible to distinguish from each other morphologically, and therefore, are viewed as a species complex, P. praetermissa s. lat. One of the subclades, which is widely distributed but restricted to the Northern hemisphere, is proposed to represent P. praetermissa s. str. An epitype is selected from the same area as the holotype, among the specimens studied here. However, the geographically most widespread clade with many representatives from both hemispheres is here referred to as P. pertenuis, a taxon that was previously considered a synonym to P. praetermissa.  相似文献

1. 1.|Integrated muscle activity, total number of limb beats and the maximum instantaneous limb beat frequency were measured in crabs during a standardized tilt regime at a series of different water temperatures between 10 and 25°C.

2. 2.|Total integrated activity and total number of limb beats showed a general increase for a decrease in temperature in all groups. Frequency of limb beat was always higher for Macropipus depurator than for Carcinus maenas, with M. depurator showing an increase and C. maenas a decrease in frequencies at extreme temperatures.

3. 3.|The temperature of acclimation of C. maenas affected the response of the crab in all parameters studied while all the results can be related to the size and normal environmental temperature range of the two species studied.

Molecular phylogenetic and comparative morphological studies provide evidence for the recognition of a new family, Chorioactidaceae, in the Pezizales. Four genera are placed in the family: Chorioactis, Desmazierella, Neournula, and Wolfina. Based on parsimony, likelihood, and Bayesian analyses of LSU, SSU, and RPB2 sequence data, Chorioactidaceae represents a sister clade to the Sarcosomataceae, to which some of these taxa were previously referred. Morphologically these genera are similar in pigmentation, excipular construction, and asci, which mostly have terminal opercula and rounded, sometimes forked, bases without croziers. Ascospores have cyanophilic walls or cyanophilic surface ornamentation in the form of ridges or warts. So far as is known the ascospores and the cells of the paraphyses of all species are multinucleate. The six species recognized in these four genera all have limited geographical distributions in the northern hemisphere.  相似文献

Cloning and sequencing of mouse Mf2 (mesoderm/mesenchyme forkhead 2) cDNAs revealed an open reading frame encoding a putative protein of 492 amino acids which, after in vitro translation, binds to a DNA consensus sequence. Mf2 is expressed at high levels in the ventral region of newly formed somites, in sclerotomal derivatives, in lateral plate and cephalic mesoderm and in the first and second branchial arches. Other regions of mesodermal expression include the developing tongue, meninges, nose, whiskers, kidney, genital tubercule and limb joints. In the nervous system Mf2 is transcribed in restricted regions of the mid- and forebrain. In several tissues, including the early somite, Mf2 is expressed in cell populations adjacent to regions expressing sonic hedgehog (Shh) and in explant cultures of presomitic mesoderm Mf2 is induced by Shh secreted by COS cells. These results suggest that Mf2, like other murine forkhead genes, has multiple roles in embryogenesis, possibly mediating the response of cells to signaling molecules such as SHH.  相似文献

Somatic hybrids were obtained between the reproductively-isolated tomato species Lycopersicon peruvianum and L. pennellii. Leaf protoplasts of the former species and protoplasts from cell suspension cultures of the latter were fused with polyethylene glycol. A double selection scheme for fusion products was used on the basis of regeneration ability in L. peruvianum and resistance to the antibiotic G418 (2-deoxystreptamine) in an L. pennellii cell line. One tetraploid and four hexaploid hybrids were obtained from this fusion. The hexaploids might have originated by fusion of two L. pennellii protoplasts and one L. peruvianum protoplast. The hybrids were identified on the basis of isozymes (loci Prx-1, Prx-2, Prx-4, Prx-6, Prx-7, Pgi-1 and putative locus Mdh-1), leaf, flower morphology and epidermal hairs. The expression of antibiotic resistance and regeneration ability in the hybrids indicate that these are dominant or codominant traits. The sterility and subvitality of the resulting hybrids questions the value of somatic hybridization as a useful breeding approach in Lycopersicon.  相似文献

Carex sect. Spirostachyae comprises 25 species displaying the centre of diversity in Eurasia. Phylogenetic analysis of the ITS nrDNA region of 20 species of sect. Spirostachyae, six species of sect. Ceratocystis, five species of sect. Elatae, and eight outgroup species reveals that neither sect. Spirostachyae nor sect. Elatae is monophyletic. With the exclusion of Carex cretica, the 19 species of sect. Spirostachyae studied form a clade with the five species of tropical-subtropical sect. Elatae. Taxonomy of the core Spirostachyae is not only mostly in agreement with our phylogenetic hypothesis, but also with ecological and new cytogenetic results. Two main groups with different chromosome numbers and edaphic preferences are identified in the core Spirostachyae. One includes primarily acidophilous species with high chromosome numbers (2n=(64)68–84), whereas the other one includes mainly basophilous species with lower chromosome numbers (2n=60–74(75)). Chromosome-number variation is extremely different in the core Spirostachyae, showing great stability in some widespread species (e.g. Carex extensa) but an active chromosome evolution – faster chromosomal rearrangements, fusion and fission events than ITS nucleotide substitutions – in more restricted species (e.g. Carex troodi). Biogeography of the two amphiatlantic pairs of species reveals two independent colonizations of South America from the European continent. The geographical barrier of the Strait of Gibraltar has played different roles in the course of evolution of this section, acting as an effective barrier to gene flow in one case (Carex helodes) but as a limited barrier or recent separation in two others (Carex distans, Carex punctata).  相似文献
