Ovigerous mole crabs Emerita talpoida (Say) were monitored in the laboratory to determine if the time of larval release is synchronous and under endogenous control. To determine the time of larval release, ovigerous females were placed under a 14:10 light/dark cycle simulating the ambient photoperiod. Hatching was rhythmic, occurring as a quick burst lasting about 5-15 min shortly after the onset of darkness. An individual mole crab will release batches of larvae for up to three successive nights, suggesting that the rhythm is under endogenous control. Mole crabs monitored under constant low-level red light displayed the same release pattern with hatching occurring near the time of expected sunset, indicating the presence of a circadian rhythm in larval release. To investigate whether the female or the embryos control hatching, a portion of the egg mass (50-100 embryos) was separated from the female. The time of hatching of the detached embryos subjected to either a still or shaken treatment was compared with the hatching time of embryos still attached to the female. Detached eggs in both treatments hatched within 1.5-2 h of the time of the female-attached eggs, which suggests that embryos control the timing of hatching.  相似文献

Eggs often suffer high levels of predation and, compared with older animals, embryos have few options available for antipredator defence. None the less, hatchlings can escape from many predators to which eggs are vulnerable. I studied early hatching as an antipredator defence of red-eyed treefrog embryos, Agalychnis callidryas, in response to egg predation by social wasps (Polybia rejecta). Red-eyed treefrogs attach their eggs to vegetation overhanging water, where they are exposed to arboreal and aerial predators. Wasps attacked half the egg clutches and killed almost a quarter of the eggs I monitored at a natural breeding site in Panama. Hatching tadpoles fall into the water, where they face aquatic predators. As predicted from improved survival of older hatchlings with aquatic predators, most undisturbed eggs hatched relatively late. However, many younger embryos directly attacked by wasps hatched immediately. Embryos attacked by wasps hatched as much as a third younger than the peak undisturbed hatching age, and most hatching embryos escaped. Thus hatching is an effective defence against wasp predation, and plasticity in hatching stage allows embryos to balance risks from stage-specific egg and larval predators. Wasp-induced hatching is behaviourally similar to the snake-induced hatching previously described in A. callidryas, but occurs in fewer eggs at a time, congruent with the scale of the risk. Individual embryos hatch in response to wasps, which take single eggs, whereas whole clutches hatch in response to snakes, which consume entire clutches. Embryos of A. callidryas thus respond appropriately to graded variation in mortality risks. Copyright 2000 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.  相似文献

During early development, most organisms display rhythmic physiological processes that are shaped by daily changes in their surrounding environment (i.e., light and temperature cycles). In fish, the effects of daily photocycles and their interaction with temperature during early developmental stages remain largely unexplored. We investigated the existence of circadian rhythms in embryonic development and hatching of three teleost species with different daily patterns of behavior: diurnal (zebrafish), nocturnal (Senegalese sole), and blind, not entrained by light (Somalian cavefish). To this end, fertilized eggs were exposed to three light regimes: 12 h of light: 12 h of darkness cycle (LD), continuous light (LL), or continuous darkness (DD); and three species-appropriate temperature treatments: 24°C, 28°C, or 32°C for zebrafish and cavefish and 18°C, 21°C, or 24°C for sole. The results pointed to the existence of daily rhythms of embryonic development and hatching synchronized to the LD cycle, with different acrophases, depending on the species: zebrafish embryos advanced their developmental stage during the light phase, whereas sole did so during the dark phase. In cavefish, embryogenesis occurred within 24 h post fertilization (hpf) at the same pace during day or night. The hatching rhythms appeared to be controlled by a clock mechanism that restricted or “gated” hatching to a particular time of day/night (window), so that embryos that reached a certain developmental state by that time hatch, whereas those that have not wait until the next available window. Under LL and DD conditions, hatching rhythms and the gating phenomenon persisted in cavefish, in zebrafish they split into ultradian bouts of hatching occurring at 12–18-h intervals, whereas in sole DD and LL produced a 24-h delay and advance, respectively. Hatching rates were best under the LD cycle and the reported optimal temperature for each species (95.2?±?2.7% of the zebrafish and 83.3?±?0.1% of the cavefish embryos hatched at 28°C, and 93.1?±?2.9% of the sole embryos hatched at 21°C). In summary, these results revealed that hatching rhythms in fish are endogenously driven by a time-keeping mechanism, so that the day and time of hatching are determined by the interplay between the developmental state (temperature-sensitive) and the circadian clock (temperature-compensated), with the particular phasing being determined by the diurnal/nocturnal behavior of the species. The regulation of hatching in oviparous animals is important for successful reproduction and survival, but is poorly understood. We unexpectedly found that RU-486, a progesterone and glucocorticoid antagonist, interferes with hatching of viable tree lizard (Urosaurus ornatus) embryos in a dose-dependent manner and hypothesized that embryonic glucocorticoids regulate hatching. To test this hypothesis, we treated eggs with corticosterone (CORT) or vehicle on Day 30 (85%) of incubation, left other eggs untreated, and observed relative hatch order and hatch time. In one study, the CORT egg hatched first in 9 of 11 clutches. In a second study, the CORT egg hatched first in 9 of 12 clutches, before vehicle-treated eggs in 10 of 12 clutches, and before untreated eggs in 7 of 9 clutches. On average, CORT eggs hatched 18.2 h before vehicle-treated eggs and 11.6 h before untreated eggs. Thus, CORT accelerates hatching of near-term embryos and RU-486 appears to block this effect. CORT may mobilize energy substrates that fuel hatching and/or accelerate lung development, and may provide a mechanism by which stressed embryos escape environmental stressors.  相似文献

In two Japanese cicadas, Cryptotympana facialis and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata , with different habitat distributions, fully developed embryos hatch in response to high humidity due to rainfall. Despite the advantage of hatching on rainy days, this trait burdens embryos with an extra period of desiccation until the unpredictable advent of rain. We compared the ability of the fully developed embryos of these cicadas to endure periods of low humidity. Eggs were exposed to a combination of different humidities (43% and 75% relative humidity, RH) and durations (0–15 days), and then transferred to an environment with 100% RH to stimulate hatching. In both species, total hatching rates decreased as duration increased, although there was no significant effect of humidity. In C. facialis , a considerable proportion of the eggs hatched during the desiccation period, and the hatching rate was higher at 75% RH than at 43% RH. After transfer to 100% RH, most hatching occurred within a day regardless of the desiccation level. In G. nigrofuscata , no nymphs hatched during the desiccation periods. However, more eggs required more than a day after transfer to 100% RH to hatch after desiccation at 43% RH than at 75% RH. Consequently, the overall proportion of timely hatching of eggs (eggs hatching within a day of moisture supply) was higher after desiccation at 43% RH in C. facialis , but it was higher after desiccation at 75% RH in G. nigrofuscata . These different physiological responses of the two species may reflect adaptation to habitat dryness.  相似文献

The effect of incubation temperature and pH on the hatch rate of eggs of Necator americanus, and the desiccation tolerance of the resulting infective stage-3 larvae were investigated in the laboratory under controlled conditions. Hatching did not occur below 15 C and above 35 C. A 21% hatch rate was obtained at 15 C while a 10.6% hatch rate was obtained at 35 C. The highest hatch rate (93.7%) was obtained at 30 C. The optimum pH for hatching was 6.0, but the larvae did not reach the infective stage. Incubation temperature of the eggs affected the longevity and desiccation tolerance of resultant infective larvae. Larvae hatched at 30 C and maintained at 26 C under bright fluorescent light had a 50% survival time (S50) of 4 days. In the dark or shade, the S50 for larvae raised at 30 C was 5 weeks, while that of larvae hatched at 20 C was 7 weeks. Incubation temperature also affected the desiccation tolerance of larvae. Larvae developed at 20 C were more resistant to desiccation at various relative humidity values than larvae hatched at 30 C.  相似文献

Egg hatch was greatest (78.33%) for eggs not previously desiccated. A reduction in numbers hatched occurred as the relative humidity at which they were dried decreased. Some eggs hatched (0.67–79.33%) at pH levels of 3.10–10.01 with the highest hatch at pH 5.60. Water temperature greatly affected egg hatch. No hatch occurred until temperatures were above 14°C. A constant 29°C significantly inhibited hatching. Egg hatch increased 13.00 to 43.42% as salinity decreased from 2200 to 9.24 micromhos/cm. As little as 13 mm of flooded soil covering the eggs prevented them from hatching for 14 days. Eighteen percent hatch resulted when soil and eggs were redistributed to a 1 mm soil layer. Egg samples from the same parent, even though treated similarly, often hatched at greatly varying rates and only rarely was hatching 100% within a replication.  相似文献

Many species of frogs and salamanders, in at least 12 families, alter their timing of hatching in response to conditions affecting mortality of eggs or larvae. Some terrestrially laid or stranded embryos wait to hatch until they are submerged in water. Some embryos laid above water accelerate hatching if the eggs are dehydrating; others hatch early if flooded. Embryos can hatch early in response to predators and pathogens of eggs or delay hatching in response to predators of larvae; some species do both. The phylogenetic pattern of environmentally cued hatching suggests that similar responses have evolved convergently in multiple amphibian lineages. The use of similar cues, including hypoxia and physical disturbance, in multiple contexts suggests potential shared mechanisms underlying the capacity of embryos to respond to environmental conditions. Shifts in the timing of hatching often have clear benefits, but we know less about the trade-offs that favor plasticity, the mechanisms that enable it, and its evolutionary history. Some potentially important types of cued hatching, such as those involving embryo-parent interactions, are relatively unexplored. I discuss promising directions for research and the opportunities that the hatching of amphibians offers for integrative studies of the mechanisms, ecology and evolution of a critical transition between life-history stages.  相似文献

The influence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) concentration on embryo hatching and the number of embryos cultured per drop of culture medium was examined in F1 (C57BL/6J × DBA/2J), C3HeB/FeJ strain and Line E mice. Embryos collected from F1 and Line E mice exhibited uniform hatching rates at BSA concentrations between 1 and 10 mg/ml, and embryo numbers ranging from 1 to 10 per 3 μ1 of culture medium. The hatching of C3HeB/FeJ blastocysts was greater at the higher concentrations of BSA and higher embryo densities. When the C3HeB/FeJ embryos were grown at high densities until morula and then cultured singly in fresh media they hatched at a low rate. However, when allowed to develop until the blastocyst stage before replotting, the embryos hatched at a high rate. C3HeB/FeJ embryos cultured singly until morula and then placed in groups of 10 hatched at a high rate. Single C3HeB/FeJ embryos, cultured in medium conditioned by the prior presence of embryos at high densities, hatched at a slightly higher frequency than those cultured in fresh medium. There was no tendency of embryos developing from the two-cell to the eight-cell stages to hatch when cultured in the presence of high densities of hatching blastocysts.  相似文献

Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes) eggs were treated with 40, 60, and 80 parts per billion (ppb) methylmercuric chloride (MMC) for a period of 10 to 25 days in order to observe gross teratogenic and lethal effects caused by methylmercury during embryogenesis. Over the period tested, 40 ppb-treated embryos were less affected than other treated animals. Embryos treated with 60 ppb MMC showed greater effects in that there was a higher death rate and those which survived ranged considerably in size, degree of gross teratogenic defects, and behavior if development was normal enough for hatching to occur. Most did not hatch during the 25-day test period. Embryos treated with 80 ppb MMC were very abnormal in development, being stunted, poorly pigmented, and they showed various eye defects. None hatched in 25 days. Many did not incorporate the heart into the body. Methylmercuric chloride in trace amounts caused various defects and presents a potential hazard to development of embryos of aquatic vertebrates.  相似文献

Previous studies showed that monochromatic green light stimuli during embryogenesis accelerated posthatch body weight (BW) and pectoral muscle growth of broilers. In this experiment, we further investigated the morphological and molecular basis of this phenomenon. Fertile broiler eggs (Arbor Acres, n=880) were pre-weighed and randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 incubation treatment groups: (1) dark condition (control group), and (2) monochromatic green light group (560 nm). The monochromatic lighting systems sourced from light-emitting diode lamps and were equalized at the intensity of 15 lx at eggshell level. The dark condition was set as a commercial control from day 1 until hatching. After hatch, 120 male 1-day-old chicks from each group were housed under incandescent white light with an intensity of 30 lx at bird-head level. No effects of light stimuli during embryogenesis on hatching time, hatchability, hatching weight and bird mortality during the feeding trial period were observed in the present study. Compared with the dark condition, the BW, pectoral muscle weight and myofiber cross-sectional areas were significantly greater on 7-day-old chicks incubated under green light. Green light also increased the satellite cell mitotic activity of pectoral muscle on 1- and 3-day-old birds. In addition, green light upregulated MyoD, myogenin and myostatin mRNA expression in late embryos and/ or newly hatched chicks. These data suggest that stimulation with monochromatic green light during incubation promote muscle growth by enhancing proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells in late embryonic and newly hatched stages. Higher expression of myostatin may ultimately help prevent excessive proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells in birds incubated under green light.  相似文献

The present study showed that the eggs of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, and the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, responded to photoperiod by hatching when placed on sand in the laboratory. S. gregaria mainly hatched during the dark phase and L. migratoria during the light phase. The importance of light as a hatching cue depended on the magnitude of the temperature change during the thermoperiod; photoperiod played a more important role in the control of hatching time in both species when the magnitude of the temperature change was small. In addition, the eggs of the two species that were covered with sand did not respond to photoperiod and hatched during both the light and dark phases, indicating that light did not penetrate through the sand. Because locust eggs are normally laid as egg pods and a foam plug is deposited between the egg mass and the ground surface, we tested a possibility that naturally deposited eggs perceived light through the foam plug. The eggs that were deposited and left undisturbed in the sand hatched during the light and dark phases at similar frequencies. These results suggest that the eggs of both locust species responded to light and controlled their hatching timing accordingly but would not use light as a hatching cue in the field. The evolutionary significance of the ability of eggs to respond to light in these locusts was discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The eggs of Rhopalosiphum insertum (Walker) showed a seasonal increase in cold-hardiness under field conditions. Their supercooling point fell from -35°C in November to below -40°C in January, then rose to-35°C or above by March.
2. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that both temperature and date affected cold-hardiness of the eggs. The supercooling points of eggs kept at 16 h photoperiod or in darkness did not, however, differ significantly.
3. Eggs brought from the field into warm, long-day conditions would not hatch until after mid-January. After this date, per cent hatch was significantly greater in 16 h photoperiod than in darkness; it did not differ between eggs kept at 5 or 0°C, but was reduced at -5°C.
4. It is concluded that eggs of Rinserturn are in diapause until mid-January, and that hatching rate and cold-hardiness are determined by separate environmental factors.  相似文献

Unlike most embryos that hatch on a predetermined timetable, California Grunion Leuresthes tenuis can prolong the embryonic period up to three times longer than the time required for hatching readiness. L. tenuis are teleosts that spawn tidally around the highest spring tides of spring and summer, incubating eggs above the water line. Embryos are competent to hatch in 10 days, however they do not hatch until triggered by an environmental cue, agitation in seawater, as the next spring tides rise. This study examined the growth and survival of L. tenuis embryos and larvae that were all fertilized on the same day, then triggered to hatch after different durations of incubation, up to 35 days post fertilization. L. tenuis embryos that survive extended incubation had decreased yolk reserves and did not advance appreciably in morphological development, even when incubation time was extended to its upper limit. After extended incubation, length of hatchlings was significantly longer than hatchlings from the primary incubation time. Regardless of the duration of incubation, larvae provided food ad libitum grew rapidly and were not significantly different in length at three weeks post hatch. Dry mass increased over time and was not significantly different between larval groups within any post-hatch age. Larval growth and survival after one additional tidal cycle of incubation are not adversely affected, but longer incubation significantly decreases embryonic and larval survival. Large reproductive output, environmentally cued hatching, and plasticity in incubation duration enable L. tenuis to reproduce successfully in the unpredictable sandy intertidal ecosystem.  相似文献

Hatch or wait? A dilemma in reptilian incubation   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Animals often form groups to reduce the risk of predation through the per capita dilution of their individual predation risk. The advantages of grouping also influence the timing of reproduction in many species. In particular, synchrony in the timing of births may have evolved as a predator-avoidance strategy as it dilutes the risk of predation upon vulnerable newborn and naive young. Eggs of an Australian freshwater turtle, Emydura macquarii , can hatch synchronously despite developmental asynchrony among eggs of a clutch and hatchlings have a reduced predation risk by emerging from the nest as a group. Developmental asynchrony within clutches was induced to reflect natural nests by dividing clutches and incubating them at either 25°C or 30°C. Some eggs were then reunited with their clutch-mates and hatching occurred synchronously in some of these groups. In groups where synchronous hatching did not occur, less advanced eggs still hatched earlier than the normal incubation period. Synchrony occurred because the less advanced eggs hatched up to five days earlier than the control embryos. We conclude that the less advanced embryos within a clutch either accelerate their development or hatch prematurely to ensure synchrony of hatching and hatchling group formation may facilitate emergence from the nest and dilute predation risk.  相似文献

A major drawback to the use in aquaculture of members of the Eubranchiopoda from temporary pool environments is that their eggs do not hatch readily. An investigation of the factors influencing the hatching of eggs of the fairy shrimpStreptocephalus macrourus, showed that light was the only factor of those investigated that was obligatory for hatching. It was found that eggs which had not been desiccated hatched successfully in the presence of absence of adults, while those which had been desiccated showed a block in hatching initially, although this block deteriorated with time and after approximately two months the eggs which had been desiccated showed a similar hatching success to that of the non-desiccated eggs. Exposure of eggs to extremes of heat or cold before incubation did not influence the hatching success of the eggs significantly, but the temperature at which incubation took place was important. The optimal range lay between 14 °C and 20 °C. Eggs hatched and nauplii survived at dissolved oxygen tensions of below 0.5 mg 1–1  相似文献

Eggs were stripped from gravid Atlantic silversides collected on two occasions, once during the early part and once during the late part of the natural spawning season. Unfertilized egg diameter was not correlated with length of the female, nor was it significantly larger during the early part of the season. Eggs were fertilized and incubated in the laboratory. Larval length at hatch was measured every 24 h during the hatching period after embryos were incubated at 18 or 25° C. Lower incubation temperature caused a significantly greater length at hatch for the offspring of each of the 20 females studies. In most cases (17 out of 20 at 25° C, 10 out of 20 at 18° C), there was a significant decrease in length at hatch during the hatching period for a given female's eggs incubated at a given temperature. In the natural environment, larvae hatched early in the season under cooler temperatures could average 12% longer than those hatched later under warmer temperatures, and therefore may have a greater chance of survival. The results help to explain the observation that field-caught M. menidia that hatched early in the season are larger at any given age than those that hatched late in the season.  相似文献

To examine how dormancy contributes to the establishment and persistence of Bythotrephes longimanus, we investigated resting egg production and hatching in relation to the demography of the planktonic stage and environmental conditions in Island Lake Reservoir (USA). During a 3-year study, the largest contribution to the egg bank occurred in autumn and most eggs hatched in spring, but we also detected some resting egg production and hatching in summer. The difference between summer and late autumn densities of eggs in sediments averaged 47% (range 0–98%) for 18 sites throughout the reservoir, which was similar to experimental estimates of in situ hatching fraction of 67% for eggs in the spring and summer following their production. Based on emergence traps, neonates hatch in the field during May and June. We estimated mortality rates of 64% for resting eggs and embryos, and 59% for newly emerged neonates. Although hatching fraction saturated at the same level, eggs incubated offshore hatched later than those nearshore where water temperature was warmer and light was detectable at the sediment surface. Low dissolved oxygen concentration did not significantly reduce hatching fraction but resulted in some eggs that initiated development but failed to hatch. Collectively, our results demonstrate substantial annual turnover in the resting egg bank of B. longimanus and high mortality of resting eggs during recruitment from the egg to the first molt of the planktonic stage. These patterns suggest that propagule pressure in the form of resting eggs requires large numbers for establishment, and that considerable post-establishment resting egg production is necessary for inter-annual persistence.  相似文献

Alkalinity stress is common in cultured aquatic animals and considered to be one of the major stress factors for fishes when they are transferred to saline‐alkali waters. To evaluate potential effects of alkalinity on the developmental biology of Oryzias latipes, fertilized eggs, larvae and breeding fish were exposed to different carbonate alkalinity concentrations of 1.5–64.5 meq l?1, for 9, 120, and 60 days, respectively. The mortality of embryos significantly increased when exposed to the high concentrations (16.5–64.5 meq l?1). Although more than 50% of survived embryos hatched in 16.5 and 31.4 meq l?1 concentrations of carbonate alkalinity, most were not able to swim up after hatching. Morphological abnormalities such as coagulated embryos, halted embryo development, and hatching failure were observed at stages 15, 29–33 and 38 in high concentrations (31.4, 64.5 meq l?1). Almost all larvae in 16.5 and 31.4 meq l?1 treatments died 70 d post‐hatch. Growth of juveniles exposed to carbonate alkalinity of 5.3 and 8.8 meq l?1 was not significantly different at 70 d and 120 d post‐hatch. The number of eggs released by breeders, the fertilization rate and the hatching rate of eggs were significantly lower in the 31.4 meq l?1 treatment than in other treatments. Although medaka are capable of surviving in high alkalinities (31.4, 64.5 meq l?1) for an extended period of time, these conditions are stressful to the fish, especially at the embryonic and reproductive stages.  相似文献

Nestling birds may differ in size and weight on the first day a clutch is fully hatched, mainly because eggs within clutches hatch over a period of several days. This asynchronous pattern of hatching is usually thought to facilitate brood reduction when the food supply is unpredictably restricted. The purpose of the study reported here was to examine the contribution of egg-weight, clutch-size, hatching spread, food supply and season to weight differences in newly hatched broods of the House Martin. At laying, heavy eggs had a greater moisture and dry weight content than light eggs and immediately before hatching there was a correlation between initial egg-weight and the dry weight of embryo and yolk. Heavier clutches also tended to give rise to heavier hatchlings. There was, however, no correlation of fresh egg-weight with the dry weight of embryos alone and the relative dry weight of embryos in a clutch was dependent on laying sequence. Hatching spread (the number of days between the emergence from the egg of the first and the last hatchling of the clutch) was 0.75 ± 0.46 days for clutches of two and increased with the size of the clutch up to 1.80 ± 0.79 days for clutches of five. When food was scarce during laying, hatching spread was greater. Weight difference in newly hatched broods was correlated with hatching spread and moreover in multivariate analysis was also correlated with periods of food scarcity during laying. It was concluded that all examples of weight hierarchies among hatchlings should not be considered adaptive; in some cases they may be imposed by food scarcity. This can lead to mortality of the runs even if food is plentiful. When the weight hierarchy is not adversely accentuated by food scarcity it may function as previously suggested, to allow brood reduction. Alternatively, particularly among House Martins, it may spread out the peak food needs of individual nestlings thereby spreading the demand on the adults.  相似文献
