The effects of elevated [CO2] (700 μl l−1 [CO2]) and temperature increase (+3 °C) on carbon accumulation in a grassland soil were studied at two N-fertiliser supplies (160
and 530 kgN ha−1 year−1) in a long-term experiment (2.5 years) on well established ryegrass swards (Lolium perenne L.,) supplied with the same amounts
of irrigation water. For all experimental treatments, the C:N ratio of the top soil organic matter fractions increased with
their particle size. Elevated CO2 concentration increased the C:N ratios of the below-ground phytomass and of the macro-organic matter. A supplemental fertiliser
N or a 3 °C increase in elevated [CO2] reduced it. At the last sampling date, elevated [CO2] did not affect the C:N ratio of the soil organic matter fractions, but increased significantly the accumulation of roots
and of macro-organic matter above 200 μm (MOM). An increased N-fertiliser supply stimulated the accumulation of the non harvested
plant phytomass and of the OM between 2 and 50 μm, without positive effect on the macro-organic matter >200 μm. Elevated [CO22] increased C accumulation in the OM fractions above 50 μm by +2.1 tC ha−1, on average, whereas increasing the fertiliser N supply led to an average supplemental accumulation of +0.8 tC ha−1. There was no significant effect of a 3 °C temperature increase under elevated [CO2] on C accumulation in the OM fractions above 50 μm.

Perennial ryegrass swards were grown in large containers on a soil and were exposed during two years to elevated (700 L L-1) or ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration at outdoor temperature and to a 3 °C increase in air temperature in elevated CO2. The nitrogen nutrition of the grass sward was studied at two sub-optimal (160 and 530 kg N ha-1 y-1) and one non-limiting (1000 kg N ha-1 y-1) N fertilizer supplies. At cutting date, elevated CO2 reduced by 25 to 33%, on average, the leaf N concentration per unit mass. Due to an increase in the leaf blade weight per unit area in elevated CO2, this decline did not translate for all cuts in a lower N concentration per unit leaf blade area. With the non-limiting N fertilizer supply, the leaf N concentration (% N) declined with the shoot dry-matter (DM) according to highly significant power models in ambient (% N=4.9 DM-0.38) and in elevated (%N=5.3 DM-0.52) CO2. The difference between both regressions was significant and indicated a lower critical leaf N concentration in elevated than in ambient CO2 for high, but not for low values of shoot biomass. With the sub-optimal N fertilizer supplies, the nitrogen nutrition index of the grass sward, calculated as the ratio of the actual to the critical leaf N concentration, was significantly lowered in elevated CO2. This indicated a lower inorganic N availability for the grass plants in elevated CO2, which was also apparent from the significant declines in the annual nitrogen yield of the grass sward and in the nitrate leaching during winter. For most cuts, the harvested fraction of the plant dry-matter decreased in elevated CO2 due, on average, to a 45–52% increase in the root phytomass. In the same way, a smaller share of the plant total nitrogen was harvested by cutting, due, on average, to a 25–41% increase in the N content of roots. The annual means of the DM and N harvest indices were highly correlated to the annual means of the nitrogen nutrition index. Changes in the harvest index and in the nitrogen nutrition index between ambient and elevated CO2 were also positively correlated. The possible implication of changes in the soil introgen cycle and of a limitation in the shoot growth potential of the grass in elevated. CO2 is discussed.Abbreviations 350

Long-term effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on below-ground biomass and transformations to soil organic matter in grassland 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We determined the effects of elevated [CO2] on the quantity and quality of below-ground biomass and several soil organic matter pools at the conclusion of an eight-year
CO2 enrichment experiment on native tallgrass prairie. Plots in open-top chambers were exposed continuously to ambient and twice-ambient
[CO2] from early April through late October of each year. Soil was sampled to a depth of 30 cm beneath and next to the crowns
of C4 grasses in these plots and in unchambered plots. Elevated [CO2] increased the standing crops of rhizomes (87%), coarse roots (46%), and fibrous roots (40%) but had no effect on root litter
(mostly fine root fragments and sloughed cortex material >500 μm). Soil C and N stocks also increased under elevated [CO2], with accumulations in the silt/clay fraction over twice that of particulate organic matter (POM; >53 μm). The mostly root-like,
light POM (density ≤1.8 Mg m-3) appeared to turn over more rapidly, while the more amorphous and rendered heavy POM (density >1.8 Mg m-3) accumulated under elevated [CO2]. Overall, rhizome and root C:N ratios were not greatly affected by CO2 enrichment. However, elevated [CO2] increased the C:N ratios of root litter and POM in the surface 5 cm and induced a small but significant increase in the
C:N ratio of the silt/clay fraction to a depth of 15 cm. Our data suggest that 8 years of CO2 enrichment may have affected elements of the N cycle (including mineralization, immobilization, and asymbiotic fixation)
but that any changes in N dynamics were insufficient to prevent significant plant growth responses.

The influence of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) during plant growth on the carbon:nutrient ratios of tissues depends in part on the time and space scales considered. Most
evidence relates to individual plants examined over weeks to just a few years. The C:N ratio of live tissues is found to increase,
decrease or remain the same under elevated [CO2]. On average it increases by about 15% under a doubled [CO2]. A testable hypothesis is proposed to explain why it increases in some situations and decreases in others. It includes the
notion that only in the intermediate range of N-availability will C:N of live tissues increase under elevated [CO2]. Five hypotheses to explain the mechanism of such increase in C:N are discussed; none of these options explains all the
published results. Where elevated [CO2] did increase the C:N of green leaves, that response was not necessarily expressed as a higher C:N of senesced leaves. An
hypothesis is explored to explain the observed range in the degree of propogation of a CO2 effect on live tissues through to the litter derived from them. Data on C:P ratios under elevated [CO2] are sparse and also variable. They do not yet suggest a generalising-hypothesis of responses. Although, unlike for C:N,
there is no theoretical expectation that C:P of plants would increase under elevated [CO2], the average trend in the data is of such an increase. The processes determining the C:P response to elevated [CO2] seem to be largely independent of those for C:N. Research to advance the topic should be structured to examine the components
of the hypotheses to explain effects on C:N. This involves experiments in which plants are grown over the full range of N
and of P availability from extreme limitation to beyond saturation. Measurements need to: distinguish structural from non-structural
dry matter; organic from inorganic forms of the nutrient in the tissues; involve all parts of the plant to evaluate nutrient
and C allocation changes with treatments; determine resorption factors during tissue senescence; and be made with cognisance
of the temporal and spatial aspects of the phenomena involved.

Elevated CO2 and temperature effects on soil carbon and nitrogen cycling in ryegrass/white clover turves of an Endoaquept soil 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Effects of elevated CO2 (700 L L–1) and a control (350 L L–1 CO2) on the productivity of a 3-year-old ryegrass/white clover pasture, and on soil biochemical properties, were investigated with turves of a Typic Endoaquept soil in growth chambers. Temperature treatments corresponding to average winter, spring, and summer conditions in the field were applied consecutively to all of the turves. An additional treatment, at 700 L L–1 CO2 and a temperature 6°C higher throughout than in the other treatments, was included.Under the same temperature conditions, overall herbage yields in the 700 L L–1 CO2 treatment were ca. 7% greater than in the control at the end of the summer period. Root mass (to ca 25 cm depth) in the 700 L L–1 CO2 treatment was then about 50% greater than in the control, but in the 700 L L–1 CO2+6°C treatment it was 6% lower than in the control. Based on decomposition results, herbage from the 700 L L–1+6°C treatment probably contained the highest proportion of readily decomposable components.Elevated CO2 had no consistent effect on soil total C and N, microbial C and N, or extractable C concentrations in any of the treatments. Under the same temperature conditions, it did, however, enhance soil respiration (CO2-C production) and invertase activity. The effects of elevated CO2 on rates of net N mineralization were less distinct, and the apparent availability of N for the sward was not affected. Under elevated CO2, soil in the higher-temperature treatment had a higher microbial C:N ratio; it also had a greater potential to degrade plant materials.Data interpretation was complicated by soil spatial variability and the moderately high background levels of organic matter and biochemical properties that are typical of New Zealand pasture soils. More rapid cycling of C under CO2 enrichment is, nevertheless, indicated. Futher long-term experiments are required to determine the overall effect of elevated CO2 on the soil C balance. 相似文献

The effects of elevated [CO2] on plant-soil carbon below-ground: A summary and synthesis 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We undertake a synthesis of the most relevant results from the presentations at the meeting Plant-Soil Carbon Below-Ground: The Effects of Elevated CO2 (Oxford-UK, September 1995), many of which are published in this Special Issue. Below-ground responses to elevated [CO2] are important because the capacity of soils for long-term carbon sequestration. We draw the following conclusions: (i) several ecosystems exposed to elevated [CO2] showed sustained increased CO2 uptake at the plot level for many years. A few systems, however, showed complete down-regulation of net CO2 uptake after several years of elevated [CO2] exposure; (ii) under elevated [CO2], a greater proportion of fixed carbon is generally allocated below-ground, potentially increasing the capacity of below-ground sinks; and (iii) some of the increased capacity of these sinks may lead to increased long-term soil carbon sequestration, although strong evidence is still lacking. We highlight the need for more soil studies to be undertaken within ongoing ecosystem-level experiments, and suggest that while some key experiments already established should be maintained to allow long term effects and feedbacks to take place, more research effort should be directed to mechanisms of soil organic matter stabilization. 相似文献

Our investigations of diurnal variations of the 13C/12C ratio and CO2 content in soil air were carried out in three environments during periods of high biosphere activity. It has been observed that diurnal variation of CO2 concentration is negatively correlated 13. Particularly great variations occurred at shallow soil depths (10–30 cm) when the plant cover activity was high while the soil temperature was rather low. Under such conditions the 13 variations had the magnitude of 4, while the CO2 concentration varied more than doubly. The maximum of the 13C/12C ratlo and the minimum of the CO2 concentration in a cultivated field with winter wheat took place in the afternoon, whereas in deciduous forest similar patterns were observed at dawn. In these cases soil temperatures at 10 cm depths varied less than 2°C. Hence, under wheat the variation in root respiration rate seem to be the main reason of the recorded varations. In an uncultivated grass-field during the hottest period in summer we did not measure any distinct variations of CO2 properties in spite of the fact that soil temperature varied up to 5°C. This might be due to dominant microbial respiration at the high soil temperature, which exceeded 20°C. 相似文献

The Maricopa cotton and wheat FACE (free-air CO2 enrichment) experiments offer propitious opportunity to quantify carbon turnover. Soil CO2 and 13C of soil organic carbon (SOC) in CO2-enriched and Control plots were measured between the final cotton FACE project (October 1991) and the end of the second wheat experiment (June 1994). The initial 13C-depletion in SOC of cotton FACE plots (measured by the difference in 13C between FACE and Control plots) persisted at the same level (1.9) 1.5 years after the experiment ended. A similar depletion was observed in soil CO2 evolved in the same plots, indicating ongoing decomposition of the new SOC. The SOC 13C of wheat plots before and after two growing seasons showed increasing 13C-depletion in FACE relative to Control. Isotopic mass balance was consistent with 5–6% new carbon input from the two wheat crops. This is lower than the 12–13% calculated for FACE cotton and perhaps a consequence of the larger root system of cotton or the 3-year duration of the cotton experiments versus 2 years for the wheat. 相似文献

We examined the effects of growth carbon dioxide (CO2)concentration and soil nutrient availability on nitrogen (N)transformations and N trace gas fluxes in California grasslandmicrocosms during early-season wet-up, a time when rates of Ntransformation and N trace gas flux are high. After plant senescenceand summer drought, we simulated the first fall rains and examined Ncycling. Growth at elevated CO2 increased root productionand root carbon:nitrogen ratio. Under nutrient enrichment, elevatedCO2 increased microbial N immobilization during wet-up,leading to a 43% reduction in gross nitrification anda 55% reduction in NO emission from soil. ElevatedCO2 increased microbial N immobilization at ambientnutrients, but did not alter nitrification or NO emission. ElevatedCO2 did not alter soil emission of N2O ateither nutrient level. Addition of NPK fertilizer (1:1:1) stimulatedN mineralization and nitrification, leading to increased N2Oand NO emission from soil. The results of our study support a mechanisticmodel in which elevated CO2 alters soil N cycling and NOemission: increased root production and increased C:N ratio in elevatedCO2 stimulate N immobilization, thereby decreasingnitrification and associated NO emission when nutrients are abundant. This model is consistent with our basic understanding of how C availabilityinfluences soil N cycling and thus may apply to many terrestrial ecosystems. 相似文献

Root exudation has been hypothesized as one possible mechanism that may lead to increased inputs of organic C into the soil
under elevated atmospheric CO2, which could lead to greater long-term soil C storage. In this study, we analyzed exudation of dissolved organic C from the
roots of seedlings of the N-fixing tree Robinia pseudoacacia L. in a full factorial design with 2 CO2 (35.0 and 70.0 Pa) × 2 temperature (26° and 30 °C during the day) × 2 N fertilizer (0 and 10.0 mM N concentration) levels. We also analyzed the decomposition rates of root exudate to estimate gross rates of exudation. Elevated
CO2 did not affect root exudation of organic C. A 4 °C increase in temperature and N fertilization did, however, significantly
increase organic C exudation rates. Approximately 60% of the exudate decomposed relatively rapidly, with a turnover rate of
less than one day, while the remaining 40% decomposed more slowly. These results suggest that warmer climates, as predicted
for the next century, may accelerate root exudation of organic C, which will probably stimulate rapid C cycling and may make
a minor contribution to intermediate to more long-term soil C storage. However, as these losses to root exudation did not
exceed 1.2% of the net C fixed by Robinia pseudoacacia, root exudation of organic C appears to have little potential to contribute to long-term soil C sequestration.

Temperate and boreal forest ecosystems contain a large part of the carbon stored on land, in the form of both biomass and soil organic matter. Increasing atmospheric [CO2], increasing temperature, elevated nitrogen deposition and intensified management will change this C store. Well documented single-factor responses of net primary production are: higher photosynthetic rate (the main [CO2] response); increasing length of growing season (the main temperature response); and higher leaf-area index (the main N deposition and partly [CO2] response). Soil organic matter will increase with increasing litter input, although priming may decrease the soil C stock initially, but litter quality effects should be minimal (response to [CO2], N deposition, and temperature); will decrease because of increasing temperature; and will increase because of retardation of decomposition with N deposition, although the rate of decomposition of high-quality litter can be increased and that of low-quality litter decreased. Single-factor responses can be misleading because of interactions between factors, in particular those between N and other factors, and indirect effects such as increased N availability from temperature-induced decomposition. In the long term the strength of feedbacks, for example the increasing demand for N from increased growth, will dominate over short-term responses to single factors. However, management has considerable potential for controlling the C store.

Elevated CO2 effects on carbon and nitrogen cycling in grass/clover turves of a Psammaquent soil 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Effects of elevated CO2 (525 and 700 L L–1), and a control (350 L L–1 CO2), on biochemical properties of a Mollic Psammaquent soil in a well-established pasture of C3 and C4 grasses and clover were investigated with continuously moist turves in growth chambers over four consecutive seasonal temperature regimes from spring to winter inclusive. After a further spring period, half of the turves under 350 and 700 L L–1 were subjected to summer drying and were then re-wetted before a further autumn period; the remaining turves were kept continuously moist throughout these additional three consecutive seasons. The continuously moist turves were then pulse-labelled with 14C-CO2 to follow C pathways in the plant/soil system during 35 days.Growth rates of herbage during the first four seasons averaged 4.6 g m–2 day–1 under 700 L L–1 CO2 and were about 10% higher than under the other two treatments. Below-ground net productivity at the end of these seasons averaged 465, 800 and 824 g m–2 in the control, 525 and 700 L L–1 treatments, respectively.in continuously moist soil, elevated CO2 had no overall effects on total, extractable or microbial C and N, or invertase activity, but resulted in increased CO2-C production from soil, and from added herbage during the initial stages of decomposition over 21 days; rates of root decomposition were unaffected. CO2 produced h–1 mg–1 microbial C was about 10% higher in the 700 L L–1 CO2 treatment than in the other two treatments. Elevated CO2 had no clearly defined effects on N availability, or on the net N mineralization of added herbage. In the labelling experiment, relatively more 14C in the plant/soil system occurred below ground under elevated CO2, with enhanced turnover of 14C also being suggested.Drying increased levels of extractable C and organic-N, but decreased mineral-N concentrations; it had no effect on microbial C, but resulted in lowered microbial N in the control only. In soil that had been previously summer-dried, CO2 production was again higher, but net N mineralization was lower, under elevated CO2 than in the control after autumn pasture growth.Over the trial period of 422 days, elevated CO2 generally appears to have had a greater effect on soil C turnover than on soil C pools in this pasture ecosystem. 相似文献

The short-term effects of a simulated cattle dung pat on N2 fixation and total uptake of N in a perennial ryegrass/white clover mixture was studied in a container experiment using sheep faeces mixed with water to a DM content of 13%. We used a new 15N cross-labelling technique to determine the influence of dung-pat N on N2 fixation in a grass/clover mixture and the uptake of dung N in grass and clover. The proportion of N in clover derived from N2 fixation (%Ndfa) varied between 88–99% during the 16 weeks following application of the dung. There was no effect of dung on the %Ndfa in clover grown in mixture, whereas the %Ndfa in clover grown in pure stand decreased (nominal 2–3%) after dung application. Dung did not influence the amount of N2 fixed, and the uptake of dung N in grass and clover proceeded at an almost constant rate. After 16 weeks, 10% of the applied dung N was taken up by grass and clover, 57% had been incorporated in the soil by faunal activity and 27% remained in residual dung on the soil surface. The dung N unaccounted for (7%) was probably lost by ammonia volatilisation and denitrification. The uptake of dung N in grass/clover mixtures in the field was similarly followed by using simulated 15N-labelled dung pats. The total dry matter production and N yields increased in the 0–30 cm distance from the edge of the dung patch, but the proportion of clover decreased. Thirteen months after application of the dung 4% of the applied dung N was recovered in the harvested herbage, 78% was recovered from the soil and the residual dung, and 18% was not accounted for. It is concluded that N2 fixation in the dung patch border area in grass/clover mixtures is not influenced directly by the release of N from dung pats in the short term. However the amount of N2 fixed may be reduced, if the growth of clover is reduced in the patch border area. 相似文献

Effects of elevated CO2 , temperature and N fertilization on nitrogen fluxes in a temperate grassland ecosystem 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The soil nitrogen cycle was investigated in a pre‐established Lolium perenne sward on a loamy soil and exposed to ambient and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μL L?1) and, at elevated [CO2], to a 3 °C temperature increase. At two levels of mineral nitrogen supply, N– (150 kgN ha?1 y?1) and N+ (533 kgN ha?1 y?1), 15N‐labelled ammonium nitrate was supplied in split applications over a 2.5‐y period. The recovery of the labelled fertilizer N was measured in the harvests, in the stubble and roots, in the macro‐organic matter fractions above 200 μm in size (MOM) and in the aggregated organic matter below 200 μM (AOM). Elevated [CO2] reduced the total amount of N harvested in the clipped parts of the sward. The harvested N derived from soil was reduced to a greater extent than that derived from fertilizer. At both N supplies, elevated [CO2] modified the allocation of the fertilizer N in the sward, in favour of the stubble and roots and significantly increased the recovery of fertilizer N in the soil macro‐organic matter fractions. The increase of fertilizer N immobilization in the MOM was associated with a decline of fertilizer N uptake by the grass sward, which supported the hypothesis of a negative feedback of elevated [CO2] on the sward N yield and uptake. Similar and even more pronounced effects were observed for the native N mineralized in the soil. At N–, a greater part of the fertilizer N organized in the root phytomass resulted in an underestimation of N immobilized in dead roots and, in turn, an underestimation of N immobilization in the MOM. The 3 °C temperature increase alleviated the [CO2] effect throughout much of the N cycle, increasing soil N mineralization, N derived from soil in the harvests, and the partitioning of the assimilated fertilizer N to shoots. In conclusion, at ambient temperature, the N cycle was slowed down under elevated [CO2], which restricted the increase in the aboveground production of the grass sward, and apparently contributed to the sequestration of carbon belowground. In contrast, a temperature increase under elevated [CO2] stimulated the soil nitrogen cycle, improved the N nutrition of the sward and restricted the magnitude of the soil C sequestration. 相似文献

Net productions of permanent soil atmosphere gases (N2, CO2, O2) and temporary gases (N2O, NO) were monitored in soil cores using a non-interfering, fully automated measuring technique allowing highly time resolved measurements over prolonged periods. The influence of changes in available organic carbon on CO2, N2O, NO and N2 production was studied by changing the soil carbon content through aerobic preincubations of different length, up to 21 days. The aerobic preincubation caused an increase in NO3
- concentration and a decrease in available carbon content. Available carbon content dominated both CO2 and total N gas (N2+N2O+NO) production during anaerobiosis. Both CO2 and total N gas production rates decreased with increasing length of the previous aerobic preincubation, this in spite of the higher initial NO3
- concentration.Total denitrification rates were closely related to the anaerobic CO2 production rates. No relation was found between water soluble carbon content and total denitrification. The N2O/N2 ratio could be explained by an interaction of carbon availability, NO3
- concentration and enzyme status. Net N2O consumption was monitored. The balance between cumulative total N gas production and NO3
- consumption varied according to the different treatments. Cumulative N2O production exceeded cumulative N2 production for 0 up to 5 days. 相似文献

Nodulated seedlings of Acacia auriculiformis Cunn. ex Benth and Acacia mangium Willd were grown with different phosphorus (P) regimes for 90 days, and half of them were exposed to elevated CO2 (800 μl l−1) during the last 30 days. Under ambient CO2, plant growth and the amount of N fixed symbiotically in N2-fixing seedlings decreased with the decrease of supplied P; this relationship did not occur under elevated CO2. The increase in plant biomass by elevated CO2 at low P was accompanied by the increase in internal P use efficiency, the amount of N fixed symbiotically and N use efficiency. Elevated CO2 recovered the low P-induced reduction in leaf dry matter per unit area or unit fresh weight, but it had no effect on the low P-induced increase in partitioning dry matter to roots. These results suggest that elevated CO2 alleviates the low P effect mainly by increasing the use efficiency of internal P for plant growth and symbiotic N2 fixation, and the source-sink relationship is possibly an important driving force for this effect of elevated CO2 in A. auriculiformis and A. mangium. 相似文献

Long term effects of naturally elevated CO2 on mediterranean grassland and forest trees 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We investigated the carbon supply status in species-rich mediterranean plant communities growing in a bowl-shaped 1-ha CO2 spring area near Sienna, Italy. A geothermic lime-kiln has provided these communities, for as long as historical records are available, with pure CO2 that mixes with ambient air at canopy level to daytime means of 500–1000 ppm CO2. Immediately outside the spring area similar plant communities are growing on similar substrate, and in the same climate, but under ca. 355 ppm CO2. We found no evidence that plants in the CO2 spring area grow faster, flower earlier or become larger. However, we found very large differences in tissue quality among the 40 species studied inside and outside the spring area. Depending on weather conditions, the mean concentration of total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC, sugars and starch) in leaves of herbaceous plants was 38–47% higher in the spring area. Fast growing ruderals growing on garden soil inside and outside the spring area show the same response. Among trees, leaves of the deciduousQuercus pubscens contain twice as much TNC inside as outside the vent area, whereas evergreenQ. ilex leaves show no significant difference. TNC levels in branch wood paralleled leaf values. TNC in shade leaves was also higher. Elevated CO2 had no effect on the sugar fraction, therefore differences in TNC are due to starch accumulation. Leaf nitrogen concentration decreases under elevated CO2. These observations suggest that the commonly reported TNC accumulation and N depletion in leaves growing under elevated CO2 are not restricted to the artificial conditions of short-term CO2 enrichment experiments but persist over very long periods. Such an alteration of tissue composition can be expected to occur in other plant communities also if atmospheric CO2 levels continue to rise. Effects on food webs and nutrient cycling are likely. 相似文献

The response of plants to elevated CO2 is dependent on the availability of nutrients, especially nitrogen. It is generally accepted that an increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration increases the C:N ratio of plant residues and exudates. This promotes temporary N-immobilization which might, in turn, reduce the availability of soil nitrogen. In addition, both a CO2 stimulated increase in plant growth (thus requiring more nitrogen) and an increased N demand for the decomposition of soil residues with a large C:N will result under elevated CO2 in a larger N-sink of the whole grassland ecosystem. One way to maintain the balance between the C and N cycles in elevated CO2 would be to increase N-import to the grassland ecosystem through symbiotic N2 fixation. Whether this might happen in the context of temperate ecosystems is discussed, by assessing the following hypothesis: i) symbiotic N2 fixation in legumes will be enhanced under elevated CO2, ii) this enhancement of N2 fixation will result in a larger N-input to the grassland ecosystem, and iii) a larger N-input will allow the sequestration of additional carbon, either above or below-ground, into the ecosystem. Data from long-term experiments with model grassland ecosystems, consisting of monocultures or mixtures of perennial ryegrass and white clover, grown under elevated CO2 under free-air or field-like conditions, supports the first two hypothesis, since: i) both the percentage and the amount of fixed N increases in white clover grown under elevated CO2, ii) the contribution of fixed N to the nitrogen nutrition of the mixed grass also increases in elevated CO2. Concerning the third hypothesis, an increased nitrogen input to the grassland ecosystem from N2 fixation usually promotes shoot growth (above-ground C storage) in elevated CO2. However, the consequences of this larger N input under elevated CO2 on the below-ground carbon fluxes are not fully understood. On one hand, the positive effect of elevated CO2 on the quantity of plant residues might be overwhelming and lead to an increased long-term below-ground C storage; on the other hand, the enhancement of the decomposition process by the N-rich legume material might favour carbon turn-over and, hence, limit the storage of below-ground carbon. 相似文献

Field studies indicate an intensification of mineral weathering with advancement from arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) to later-evolving ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungal partners of gymnosperm and angiosperm trees. We test the hypothesis that this intensification is driven by increasing photosynthate carbon allocation to mycorrhizal mycelial networks using 14CO2-tracer experiments with representative tree–fungus mycorrhizal partnerships. Trees were grown in either a simulated past CO2 atmosphere (1500 ppm)—under which EM fungi evolved—or near-current CO2 (450 ppm). We report a direct linkage between photosynthate-energy fluxes from trees to EM and AM mycorrhizal mycelium and rates of calcium silicate weathering. Calcium dissolution rates halved for both AM and EM trees as CO2 fell from 1500 to 450 ppm, but silicate weathering by AM trees at high CO2 approached rates for EM trees at near-current CO2. Our findings provide mechanistic insights into the involvement of EM-associating forest trees in strengthening biological feedbacks on the geochemical carbon cycle that regulate atmospheric CO2 over millions of years. 相似文献
