Understanding the factors that govern the distribution of species is a central goal of evolutionary ecology. It is commonly assumed that geographic range limits reflect ecological niche limits and that species experience increasingly marginal conditions towards the edge of their ranges. Using spatial data and ecological niche models we tested these hypotheses in Arabidopsis lyrata. Specifically, we asked whether range limits coincide with predicted niche limits in this system and whether the suitability of sites declines towards the edge of the species’ range in North America. We further explored patterns of environmental change towards the edge of the range and asked whether genome‐wide patterns of genetic diversity decline with increasing peripherality and environmental marginality. Our results suggest that latitudinal range limits coincide with niche limits. Populations experienced increasingly marginal environments towards these limits – though patterns of environmental change were more complex than most theoretical models for range limits assume. Genomic diversity declined towards the edge of the species’ range and with increasing distance from the estimated centre of the species’ niche in environmental space, but not with the suitability of sites based on niche model predictions. Thus while latitudinal range limits in this system are broadly associated with niche limits, the link between environmental conditions and genetic diversity (and thus the adaptive potential of populations) is less clear.

  • Environmental gradients, and particularly climatic variables, exert a strong influence on plant distribution and, potentially, population genetic diversity and differentiation. Differences in water availability can cause among‐population variation in ecological processes and can thus interrupt populations’ connectivity and isolate them environmentally. The present study examines the effect of environmental heterogeneity on plant populations due to environmental isolation unrelated to geographic distance.
  • Using AFLP markers, we analyzed genetic diversity and differentiation among 12 Salvia spinosa populations and 13 Salvia syriaca populations from three phytogeographical regions (Mediterranean, Irano‐Turanian and Saharo‐Arabian) representing the extent of the species’ geographic range in Jordan. Differences in geographic location and climate were considered in the analyses.
  • For both species, flowering phenology varied among populations and regions. Irano‐Turanian and Saharo‐Arabian populations had higher genetic diversity than Mediterranean populations, and genetic diversity increased significantly with increasing temperature. Genetic diversity in Salvia syriaca was affected by population size, while genetic diversity responded to drought in S. spinosa. For both species, high levels of genetic differentiation were found as well as two well‐supported phytogeographical groups of populations, with Mediterranean populations clustering in one group and the Irano‐Turanian and Saharo‐Arabian populations in another. Genetic distance was significantly correlated to environmental distance, but not to geographic distance.
  • Our data indicate that populations from moist vs. arid environments are environmentally isolated, where environmental gradients affect their flowering phenology, limit gene flow and shape their genetic structure. We conclude that environmental heterogeneity may act as driver for the observed variation in genetic diversity.

The ‘centre–periphery hypothesis’ (CPH) is a long‐standing postulate in ecology that states that genetic variation and demographic performance of a species decrease from the centre to the edge of its geographic range. This hypothesis is based on an assumed concordance between geographical peripherality and ecological marginality such that environmental conditions become harsher towards the limits of a species range. In this way, the CPH sets the stage for understanding the causes of distribution limits. To date, no study has examined conjointly the consistency of these postulates. In an extensive literature review we discuss the birth and development of the CPH and provide an assessment of the CPH by reviewing 248 empirical studies in the context of three main themes. First, a decrease in species occurrence towards their range limits was observed in 81% of studies, while only 51% demonstrated reduced abundance of individuals. A decline in genetic variation, increased differentiation among populations and higher rates of inbreeding were demonstrated by roughly one in two studies (47, 45 and 48%, respectively). However, demographic rates, size and population performance less often followed CPH expectations (20–30% of studies). We highlight the impact of important methodological, taxonomic, and biogeographical biases on such validation rates. Second, we found that geographic and ecological marginality gradients are not systematically concordant, which casts doubt on the reliability of a main assumption of the CPH. Finally, we attempt to disentangle the relative contribution of geographical, ecological and historical processes on the spatial distribution of genetic and demographic parameters. While ecological marginality gradients explain variation in species' demographic performance better than geographic gradients, contemporary and historical factors may contribute interactively to spatial patterns of genetic variation. We thereby propose a framework that integrates species' ecological niche characteristics together with current and past range structure to investigate spatial patterns of genetic and demographic variation across species ranges.

Eucalyptus camaldulensis is one of the most widely utilised eucalypts. It is also the only eucalypt that occurs across the Australian continent, playing a key ecological role as fauna habitat and in riverbank stabilisation. Despite its ecological and economic importance, uncertainty remains regarding the delineation of genetic and morphological variants. Nine hundred and ninety trees from 97 populations, representing the species’ geographic range were genotyped using 15 microsatellite loci and patterns of diversity compared with restriction fragment length polymorphisms in 29 of these populations. Both markers showed that despite having a riverine distribution, downstream seed dispersal has had less influence than geographic distance on dispersal patterns. Spatial patterns in the distribution of microsatellite genotypes were compared with environmental parameters and boundaries defined by river systems, drainage basins and proposed subspecies. Significant genetic differences among populations within river systems indicated that rivers should not be treated as a single genetic entity in conservation or breeding programmes. Strong geographic trends were evident with 40% of variation in genetic diversity explained by latitude and moisture index. Isolation by distance and significant correlations between genetic distance and environmental parameters for most loci suggest historical factors have had more influence than selection on current patterns of distribution of genetic diversity. Geographic structuring of molecular variation, together with congruence between genetic and morphological variation indicate that E. camaldulensis should be treated as a number of subspecies rather than a single variable taxon. High levels of genetic diversity and geographic trends in the distribution of variation provide a firm basis for further exploration of the species’ genetic resources.

A long‐standing hypothesis in biogeography is that a species’ abundance is highest at the centre of its geographical or environmental space and decreases toward the edges. Several studies tested this hypothesis and provided mixed results and overall weak support to the theory. Most studies, however, are affected by several limitations related to the sample size, the comparability among abundance measures, the definition of species geographic range and corresponding environmental space, and the proxy variables used to represent centrality/marginality gradients. Here we test the abundant‐centre hypothesis on 108 bird and mammal species and embrace the plural nature of the hypothesis by considering 9 geographic and ecological centrality/marginality measures. We analyse the species‐specific effect sizes using a meta‐analytical approach, and test whether the support for the hypothesis is mediated by species dispersal abilities, and the geographic and environmental coverage of the data. The summary effect sizes estimated for the 9 measures are largely inconsistent with the theoretical expectations and show a significant amount of residual heterogeneity. Variables such as dispersal distance, geographic and environmental coverage of the data, appear important in explaining the variation observed between different species, but the results are contrary to those originally hypothesized, and inconsistent across centrality/marginality measures and the datasets used. We show that addressing common pitfalls in previous studies does not provide more support to the abundant‐centre hypothesis, with support being very dependent on the centrality/marginality measure tested, the geographic extent considered for the test, and geographic and environmental coverage of the data. The abundant‐centre hypothesis so far remains an appealing speculation with little and variable empirical support.

A cline of allozyme variation inAbies mariesii
Genetic variation at 22 allozyme loci was examined for 1,003 trees from 11 isolated natural populations ofAbies mariesii covering all except the southernmost region of its geographic range. Genetic diversity within species (H es=0.063) was low compared to many other long-lived woody species. Most of the genetic variation is found within populations (G ST=0.144) despite their isolated distribution. Genetic distance between populations was positively correlated with geographic distance. Genetic diversity within populations was generally low (meanH ep=0.054), but varied across populations in a clinal fashion such that genetic variation decreased with increasing latitude. These genetic characteristics may reflect the distribution history of this species.

Camellia japonica is a widespread and morphologically diverse tree native to parts of Japan and adjacent islands. Starch gel electrophoresis was used to score allelic variation at 20 loci in seeds collected from 60 populations distributed throughout the species range. In comparison with other plant species, the level of genetic diversity within C. japonica populations is very high: 66.2% of loci were polymorphic on average per population, with a mean number of 2.16 alleles per locus; the mean observed and panmictic heterozygosities were 0.230 and 0.265, respectively. Genotypic proportions at most loci in most populations fit Hardy-Weinberg expectations. However, small heterozygote deficiencies were commonly observed (mean population fixation index = 0.129). It is suggested that the most likely cause of the observed deficiencies is population subdivision into genetically divergent subpopulations. The overall level of population differentiation is greater than is typically observed in out-breeders: The mean genetic distance and identity (Nei's D and I) between pairs of populations were 0.073 and 0.930, respectively, and Wright's Fst was 0.144. Differences among populations appeared to be manifested as variation in gene frequencies at many loci rather than variation in allelic composition per se. However, the patterns of variation were not random. Reciprocal clinal variation of gene frequencies was observed for allele pairs at six loci. In addition, principal components analysis revealed that populations tended to genetically cluster into four regions representing the geographic areas Kyushu, Shikoku, western Honshu, and eastern Honshu. There was a significant relationship between genetic and geographic distance (r = 0.61; P < 0.01). Analysis of variance on allozyme frequencies showed that there was approximately four times as much differentiation among populations within regions, as among regions. It is likely that the observed patterns of population relationships result from the balance between genetic drift in small subpopulations and gene flow between them.

Tree species with wide distributions often exhibit different levels of genetic structuring correlated to their environment. However, understanding how environmental heterogeneity influences genetic variation is difficult because the effects of gene flow, drift and selection are confounded. We investigated the genetic variation and its ecological correlates in a wind-pollinated Mediterranean tree species, Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl, within a recognised glacial refugium in Croatia. We sampled 11 populations from environmentally divergent habitats within the Continental and Mediterranean biogeographical regions. We combined genetic data analyses based on nuclear microsatellite loci, multivariate statistics on environmental data and ecological niche modelling (ENM). We identified a geographic structure with a high genetic diversity and low differentiation in the Continental region, which contrasted with the significantly lower genetic diversity and higher population divergence in the Mediterranean region. The positive and significant correlation between environmental and genetic distances after controlling for geographic distance suggests an important influence of ecological divergence of the sites in shaping genetic variation. The ENM provided support for niche differentiation between the populations from the Continental and Mediterranean regions, suggesting that contemporary populations may represent two divergent ecotypes. Ecotype differentiation was also supported by multivariate environmental and genetic distance analyses. Our results suggest that despite extensive gene flow in continental areas, long-term stability of heterogeneous environments have likely promoted genetic divergence of ashes in this region and can explain the present-day genetic variation patterns of these ancient populations.

Tradescantia hirsuticaulis, the hairy-stemmed spiderwort, is an insect-pollinated perennial plant species found primarily on rock outcrops in Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. Although populations of T. hirsuticaulis are rare and scattered, local populations are frequently large. Levels of genetic variation were assessed for 13 populations representing the species' range in these three states. Despite the disjunct distribution of this habitat specialist and apparent lack of specialized seed and pollen dispersal mechanisms, exceptionally high levels of genetic variation are maintained within the species, with a moderate level of variation (18%) found among populations. Twenty-nine of the 33 loci resolved (88%) were polymorphic within the species; the mean number of loci polymorphic within populations was 54%. The mean number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 3.24 across all populations and averaged 2.37 within populations. Genetic diversity was 0.206 for the species, whereas mean population genetic diversity was 0.157, both much higher than the average for other short-lived herbaceous perennials. Estimated levels of gene flow were moderate (Nm = 0.95), and a significant association between geographic distance and genetic distance between populations was found (r = 0.68; P < 0.0001). Habitat destruction is the major threat to this genetically diverse species. Since gene flow among its highly dispersed populations is limited, diminution or extinction of local populations could jeopardize the long-term evolutionary potential of this species.

The core–periphery hypothesis (CPH) predicts that populations located at the periphery of a species' range should have lower levels of genetic variation than those at the centre of the range. However, most of the research on the CPH focuses on geographic distance and not on ecological distance, or uses categorical definitions of core and periphery to explain the distribution of genetic diversity. We use current climate data and historical climate data from the last glacial maxima to develop quantitative estimates of contemporary and historical ecological suitability using ecological niche models. We analysed genetic diversity using 12 polymorphic microsatellites to estimate changes in heterozygosity, allelic richness and population differentiation in 31 populations of the wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) spanning the species’ entire eastern clade (33o to 45o latitude) from Alabama, USA, to Nova Scotia, Canada. Our data support predictions based on the CPH. Populations showed significant differences in genetic diversity across the range, with lower levels of genetic variation at the geographic range edge and in areas with lower levels of historical and contemporary ecological suitability. However, history and geography (not current ecological suitability) best explain the patterns. This study highlights the importance of examining more than just geography when assessing the CPH, and the importance of historical ecological suitability in the maintenance of genetic diversity and population differentiation.

Eighteen allozyme loci were used to examine genetic diversity in 10 natural populations of Sarracenia leucophylla Raf., a pitcher plant restricted to the southeastern United States. One ex situ population propagated for restoration in Georgia was also analyzed. S. leucophylla is an insect-pollinated, outcrossing perennial wetland herb that is threatened over much of its geographic range. Fifteen loci (83.3%) were polymorphic, with a mean number of alleles of 3.33. Compared to species having similar life-history traits and to previously analyzed Sarracenia species, S. leucophylla displayed unexpectedly high genetic diversity. For example, genetic diversity within the species (Hes) was 0.224 and mean population genetic diversity (Hep) was 0.183. Although small S. leucophylla populations maintained less genetic diversity than larger ones, these differences were not statistically significant. Nonetheless, this suggests that small populations may have lost rare alleles. Statistically significant genetic differentiation among populations was found (theta = 0.192, P < .01), although it was not atypical considering the species' life-history characteristics. A significant correlation (P < .01) between genetic and geographic distance was found, indicating an isolation-by-distance effect. However, the correlation coefficient for this relationship was low (r = 0.46), suggesting that factors other than gene flow play a prominent role in the geographic distribution of genetic diversity within the species. The ex situ population captured most of the allozyme variation found in its source population.

The distribution of a species is a complex expression of its ecological and evolutionary history and integrating population genetic, environmental, and ecological data can provide new insights into the effects of the environment on the population structure of species. Previous work demonstrated strong patterns of genetic differentiation in natural populations of the hermaphroditic nematode Pristionchus pacificus in its La Réunion Island habitat, but gave no clear understanding of the role of the environment in structuring this variation. Here, we present what is to our knowledge the first study to statistically evaluate the role of the environment in shaping the structure and distribution of nematode populations. We test the hypothesis that genetic structure in P. pacificus is influenced by environmental variables, by combining population genetic analyses of microsatellite data from 18 populations and 370 strains, with multivariate statistics on environmental data, and species distribution modelling. We assess and quantify the relative importance of environmental factors (geographic distance, altitude, temperature, precipitation, and beetle host) on genetic variation among populations. Despite the fact that geographic populations of P. pacificus comprise vast genetic diversity sourced from multiple ancestral lineages, we find strong evidence for local associations between environment and genetic variation. Further, we show that significantly more genetic variation in P. pacificus populations is explained by environmental variation than by geographic distances. This supports a strong role for environmental heterogeneity vs. genetic drift in the divergence of populations, which we suggest may be influenced by adaptive forces.

Geographic variation in song is widespread among birds, particularly in species that learn vocalizations. The relationship between geographic distance and song variation is likely related to the degree of isolation between populations. To assess this effect of geographic isolation on song divergence, we examined patterns of geographic song variation in four species of Australian fairy‐wrens (Malurus), two with suspected histories of geographic isolation and two without. Song variation in all four species was consistent with patterns of isolation by distance, and allopatric subspecies in two species were more divergent in song than predicted by distance alone. Each species’ pattern was unique, and some interspecific variation could not be explained by geographic distance. These results indicate that patterns of geographic variation can be influenced by more than geographic distance and historical isolation alone. We suggest that morphological constraints, environmental influences, and sexual selection may all contribute to the variation observed for each species.

A previous phylogeography and genetic diversity study of Chamaedaphne calyculata (Ericaceae) showed that populations over its geographic range were strongly separated into two groups: a Eurasian/NW North American group and a NE North American one corresponding with the disjunct distribution of Sphagnum-dominated peatlands in north-western and central-eastern North America. Here, I have extended the survey and focused on the species’ detailed postglacial origin and the effect of isolation on genetic diversity patterns, particularly within island-like populations at the western periphery of its range in Europe. Using AFLP markers, estimates of genetic diversity within 16 C. calyculata populations in the Eurasian group were low (percentage of polymorphic loci P PL=14.9–24.8 %, Nei’s gene diversity H=0.060–0.119). Genetic diversity patterns within this species did not support the hypothesis that genetic diversity decreases towards the periphery of the range. Bayesian clustering analysis showed that population-level admixture was present in almost all studied 16 populations, suggesting multi-directional gene flow. On the other hand, the majority of assigned individuals (ca. 98 % of individuals) were offspring of the original residents, confirming that C. calyculata populations in the present day acted as discrete genetic units both in its continuous range and at its western periphery, and that gene flow was historic rather than contemporary in Eurasia. There was no correlation between genetic and geographic distance in the Eurasian group (r=0.02, P>0.05, Mantel test) nor at the western periphery (r=0.15, P>0.05, Mantel test). The isolation-by-distance (IBD) scatterplot matched Hutchinson and Templeton’s interpretation (case III), and geographic distance between populations was not a reliable predictor of the degree of genetic differentiation between populations. It is suggested that the lack of IBD might be a result of random genetic drift in rather disconnected populations that have become increasingly fragmented relatively recently. Positive and significant relationships between genetic and geographic distance on a small population scale was the result of biparental inbreeding of C. calyculata and restricted seed rain. Despite sporadic generative reproduction and limited dispersal, the fine-scale genetic structure within populations has been maintained, even though population sizes have been reduced to small fragments in recent years.

Aim The geographic clinal variation of traits in organisms can indicate the possible causes of phenotypic evolution. We studied the correlates of flower trait variation in populations of a style‐dimorphic plant, Narcissus papyraceus Ker‐Gawl., within a region of high biogeographical significance, the Strait of Gibraltar. This species shows a geographic gradient in the style‐morph ratio, suggested to be driven by pollinator shifts. We tested whether parallel geographic variation of perianth traits also exists, concomitant with vegetative trait variation or genetic similarity of plant populations. Location The Strait of Gibraltar region (SG hereafter, including both south‐western Iberian Peninsula and north‐western Morocco). Methods We used univariate and multivariate analyses of flower and vegetative traits in 23 populations. We applied Mantel tests and partial Mantel correlations on vegetative and flower traits and geographic locations of populations to test for spatial effects. We used Moran’s autocorrelation analyses to explore the spatial structure within the range, and performed the analyses with and without the Moroccan samples to test for the effects of the SG on spatial patterns. Amplified fragment length polymorphism data were used to estimate the genetic distance between populations and to ascertain its relationship with morphometric distance. Results There was high variation between and within populations in both flower and vegetative traits. Mantel correlations between geographic and morphometric distances were not significant, but the exclusion of Moroccan populations revealed some distance effect. Partial Mantel correlation did not detect a significant correlation between flower and vegetative morphometric distances after controlling for geographic distance. There were opposite trends in spatial autocorrelograms of flower and vegetative traits. The genetic distance between pairs of populations was directly correlated with geographic distance; however, flower morphometric and genetic distances were not significantly correlated. Main conclusions The SG had some influence on phenotypes, although the causes remain to be determined. The opposite trend of variation in flower and vegetative traits, and the lack of correlation between genetic distance and dissimilarity of flower phenotypes favour the hypothesis of pollinator‐mediated selection on flower morphology, although this may affect only particular traits and populations rather than overall phenotypes. Although stochastic population processes may have a small effect, other factors may account for the high flower variation within and between populations.

Adaptation to marginal habitats at species range-limits has often been associated with parthenogenetic reproduction in terrestrial animals and plants. Laboratory observations have shown that brown algae exhibit a high propensity for parthenogenesis by various mechanisms. The kelp Laminaria digitata is an important component of the ecosystem in Northern European rocky intertidal habitats. We studied four L. digitata populations for the effects of marginality on genetic diversity and sexual reproduction. Two populations were marginal: One (Locquirec, in Northern Brittany) was well within the geographic range, but was genetically isolated from other populations by large stretches of sandy beaches. Another population was at the range limits of the species (Quiberon, in Southern Brittany) and was exposed to much higher seasonal temperature changes. Microsatellite analyses confirmed that these populations showed decreased genetic and allelic diversity, consistent with marginality and genetic isolation. Sporophytes from both marginal populations showed greatly diminished spore-production compared to central populations, but only the southern-limit population (Quiberon) showed a high propensity for producing unreduced (2N) spores. Unreduced 2N spores formed phenotypically normal gametophytes with nuclear area consistent with ≥2N DNA contents, and microsatellite studies suggested these were produced at least in part by automixis. However, despite this being the dominant path of spore production in Quiberon sporophyte individuals, the genetic evidence indicated the population was maintained mostly by sexual reproduction. Thus, although spore production and development showed the expected tendency of geographical parthenogenesis in marginal populations, this appeared to be a consequence of maladaptation, rather than an adaptation to, life in a marginal habitat.
