Although habitually considered as a whole, xylogenesis is a complex process of division and maturation of a pool of cells where the relationship between the phenological phases generating such a growth pattern remains essentially unknown. This study investigated the causal relationships in cambium phenology of black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP] monitored for 8 years on four sites of the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. The dependency links connecting the timing of xylem cell differentiation and cell production were defined and the resulting causal model was analysed with d-sep tests and generalized mixed models with repeated measurements, and tested with Fisher's C statistics to determine whether and how causality propagates through the measured variables. The higher correlations were observed between the dates of emergence of the first developing cells and between the ending of the differentiation phases, while the number of cells was significantly correlated with all phenological phases. The model with eight dependency links was statistically valid for explaining the causes and correlations between the dynamics of cambium phenology. Causal modelling suggested that the phenological phases involved in xylogenesis are closely interconnected by complex relationships of cause and effect, with the onset of cell differentiation being the main factor directly or indirectly triggering all successive phases of xylem maturation.

Background and Aims

Ongoing global warming has been implicated in shifting phenological patterns such as the timing and duration of the growing season across a wide variety of ecosystems. Linear models are routinely used to extrapolate these observed shifts in phenology into the future and to estimate changes in associated ecosystem properties such as net primary productivity. Yet, in nature, linear relationships may be special cases. Biological processes frequently follow more complex, non-linear patterns according to limiting factors that generate shifts and discontinuities, or contain thresholds beyond which responses change abruptly. This study investigates to what extent cambium phenology is associated with xylem growth and differentiation across conifer species of the northern hemisphere.

Methods

Xylem cell production is compared with the periods of cambial activity and cell differentiation assessed on a weekly time scale on histological sections of cambium and wood tissue collected from the stems of nine species in Canada and Europe over 1–9 years per site from 1998 to 2011.

Key Results

The dynamics of xylogenesis were surprisingly homogeneous among conifer species, although dispersions from the average were obviously observed. Within the range analysed, the relationships between the phenological timings were linear, with several slopes showing values close to or not statistically different from 1. The relationships between the phenological timings and cell production were distinctly non-linear, and involved an exponential pattern

Conclusions

The trees adjust their phenological timings according to linear patterns. Thus, shifts of one phenological phase are associated with synchronous and comparable shifts of the successive phases. However, small increases in the duration of xylogenesis could correspond to a substantial increase in cell production. The findings suggest that the length of the growing season and the resulting amount of growth could respond differently to changes in environmental conditions.

Cambial structure and activity of Ficus rumphii Blume vary withthe changes in local climate. The cambial cells start swellingearly in April prior to the onset of periclinal divisions whichare most frequent in August. Cell division stops in October.During the growth season, initiation as well as cessation ofthe phloem production precedes that of xylem. A moderately hightemperature is correlated with the cambial reactivation. Onceinitiated, the activity continues at relatively low temperatures.Hot and dry environment favours the phloem production, whereashot and moderately humid conditions induce xylogenesis. Thesize and relative proportion of cambial initials also changewith season. Fusiform initials are shorter and broader duringthe rainy season (July–September) than for the rest ofthe year. Multiseriate and triseriate rays, as also the tallrays, outnumber the other types of rays throughout the year. Ficus rumphii, vascular cambium, phenology, climatic variation  相似文献

Age-dependent xylogenesis in timberline conifers
Neither anatomical change nor physiological abnormalities have been observed in the cambia of older trees. However, different sensitivity and period of significant responses to climate suggest the existence of some age-related change in the patterns of cambial activity and/or wood cell formation. Here, weekly cambial activity and timing and duration of xylem cell enlargement and wall thickening were compared in adult (50-80 yr) and old (200-350 yr) trees of Larix decidua, Pinus cembra and Picea abies at the Alpine timberline during 2004 and 2005. Timings and durations of xylogenesis differed between adult and old trees, with 2-3 wk shorter cambial activity found in the latter. The delayed onset of cambium division and lower cell production in old trees, with respect to adult trees, led to reductions of 15-20% in the overall duration of xylem differentiation. These results demonstrate that cambial dynamics change during the tree lifespan and that the time window of tree-ring production shortens with age. Variations in the period of xylem growth may be the cause of age-dependent responses to climate. The observed shorter xylogenesis in older plants at the Alpine timberline could be related to a size effect and not just to age per se.

In the next century, the boreal ecosystems are projected to experience greater rates of warming than most other regions of the world. As the boreal forest constitutes a reservoir of trees of huge ecological importance and only partially known economic potential, any possible climate‐related change in plant growth and dynamics has to be promptly predicted and evaluated. A model for assessing xylem phenology in black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] using daily temperatures and thermal thresholds was defined and applied to predict changes in onset, ending and duration of xylem growth under different warming scenarios with temperatures rising by up to 3 °C. This was achieved by collecting and analyzing a dataset obtained from a 7‐year monitoring of cambium phenology and wood formation on a weekly time‐scale in trees growing in four sites at different latitudes and altitudes in the Saguenay‐Lac‐Saint‐Jean region (Quebec, Canada). The onset of xylem growth occurred between mid‐May and early June while the end ranged between mid‐September and early October, resulting in a growing season of 101–141 days. The model predicted longer duration of xylem growth at higher temperatures, with an increase of 8–11 days/ °C, because of an earlier onset and later ending of growth. With an increase of 3 °C in the mean temperature during the year, the duration of xylem growth changed on average from 125 to 160 days. The predicted changes in cambial phenology could significantly affect future wood production of the boreal ecosystems.

The interrelationship between phenological events, climatic factors, periodicity of cambial activity and seasonal production of xylem was examined in Dillenia indica L. (Dilleniaceae) growing in sub-tropical wet forest of Meghalaya state, India. The reactivation of cambial activity was seen in the first week of May, 15 days after sprouting of new leaves and buds. The activity of cambium and xylem production gradually declined toward December and ceased from January to April end. There was correlation between leaf fall and cambial dormancy. It was evident from the correlation and regression analysis, the relationship between cambial activity, xylem production with climatic factors, the monthly mean minimum temperature plays an important role for the cambial activity and xylem production rather than influence by rainfall and relative humidity in D. indica L. The data were discussed in the light of cambial activity, xylem production and phenological events.

The interrelationship among seasonality of cambium, wood formation, cell size variation, lignification, tree phenology and climatic factors has been examined in Moringa oleifera, a tropical evergreen tree. The vascular cambium in Moringa is a storied with a distinct seasonal variation in its structure due to dimensional changes in rays. Though cambium remains active throughout the year it is sensitive to water availability. Peak cambial cell division and rate of xylem differentiation are influenced by average rainfall during the monsoon period. Cambial cell division reaches higher up in the tree trunk when it is supporting a high number of branches and leaves. Statistical analysis of cell size variation and climate factors revealed that xylem cell development is greatly influenced by rainfall and rarely by temperature. Lengths of fusiform initials and vessel elements are positively correlated. The pattern of lignification during xylogenesis shows that the vessels are the first element to develop lignified walls and ray cells are the last elements to become lignified. Fiber cell walls show more syringyl lignin, while the cell walls of other xylem elements are characterized by relatively more guaiacyl lignin units.

Critical temperatures for xylogenesis in conifers of cold climates
Aim To identify temperatures at which cell division and differentiation are active in order to verify the existence of a common critical temperature determining growth in conifers of cold climates. Location Ten European and Canadian sites at different latitudes and altitudes. Methods The periods of cambial activity and cell differentiation were assessed on a weekly time‐scale on histological sections of cambium and wood tissue collected over 2 to 5 years per site from 1998 to 2005 from the stems of seven conifer species. All data were compared with daily air temperatures recorded from weather stations located close to the sites. Logistic regressions were used to calculate the probability of xylogenesis and of cambium being active at a given temperature. Results Xylogenesis lasted from May to October, with a growing period varying from 3 to 5 months depending on location and elevation. Despite the wide geographical range of the monitored sites, temperatures for onset and ending of xylogenesis converged towards narrow ranges with average values around 4–5, 8–9 and 13–14 °C for daily minimum, mean and maximum temperature, respectively. On the contrary, cell division in the cambium stopped in July?August, when temperatures were still high. Main conclusions Wood formation in conifers occurred when specific critical temperatures were reached. Although the timing and duration of xylogenesis varied among species, sites and years, the estimated temperatures were stable for all trees studied. These results provide biologically based evidence that temperature is a critical factor limiting production and differentiation of xylem cells in cold climates. Although daily temperatures below 4?5 °C are still favourable for photosynthesis, thermal conditions below these values could inhibit the allocation of assimilated carbon to structural investment, i.e. xylem growth.

The interrelationship between phenological events, climatic factors, periodicity of cambial activity and seasonal production of xylem was examined in Pinus kesiya Royle ex. Gordon growing in sub-tropical wet forest of Meghalaya state, India. Reactivation of dormant cambium occurs after sprouting of new needles during the middle of February. Since the formation of reproductive cones takes place simultaneously with vegetative bud break and needle formation, cone formation could also lead to the enhancement of cambial activity. The activity of cambium and xylem production decline gradually towards November and cease from end of December to end of January. There was no correlation between needle fall and cambial activity. Due to the production of three flushes of new needles and branches in a year the tree never becomes completely leafless. It was evident from correlation and regression analysis that the annual course of average temperature plays an important role for the reactivation of vascular cambium after dormancy. The differentiation of xylem elements correlated with mean temperature in the first place and secondly with precipitation. Increase in length of fusiform initials and their derivatives could be correlated with relative humidity, precipitation and mean maximum temperature. Dormancy was imposed by low temperature and less precipitation. The data are discussed in the light of cambial activity, xylem production and phenological events.

The effect of exogenous ethephon on cambial activity, xylem production and ray population in young shoots of Leucaena leucocephala was investigated anatomically. The application of ethephon showed a diphasic effect on cambial activity and xylogenesis in a dose dependent manner. Lower concentration of ethephon enhanced cambial activity while high concentrations reduced cambial cell divisions and daughter-cell differentiation. High ethephon concentration also resulted in shorter vessel elements, thick walled fibers and phenolic accumulation in ray cells and vessel elements, whereas low concentration allowed elongation of fibers and vessel elements. The density of rays increased significantly with increase in ethylene concentration. The evaluation of longitudinal sections of cambial zone in ethephon treated plants showed high frequency of transformation of fusiform initials into ray initials through divisions and segmentation, resulting in high ray frequency in both xylem and phloem. The present study demonstrates that ethylene plays an important role in regulating secondary vascular tissue composition by reducing the population of fusiform initials in the cambium.

Background and Aims

Reconstructions have identified the 20th century as being uniquely warm in the last 1000 years. Changes in the phenology of primary meristems converged toward increases in length of the growing season. Has the phenology of secondary meristem changed during the last century, and to what extent?

Methods

Timings of wood formation in black spruce, Picea mariana, were monitored for 9 years on a weekly timescale at four sites in the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. Models for assessing xylem phenology were defined and applied to reconstruct onset, ending and duration of xylogenesis between 1950 and 2010 using thermal thresholds on chronologies of maximum and minimum temperatures.

Key Results

All sites exhibited increasing trends of both annual and May–September temperatures, with the greatest changes observed at the higher latitudes. Phenological events in spring were more affected than those occurring in autumn, with cambial resumptions occurring 0·5–0·8 d decade−1 earlier. The duration of xylogenesis has lengthened significantly since 1950, although the models supplied wide ranges of variations, between 0·07 and 1·5 d decade−1, respectively.

Conclusions

The estimated changes in past cambial phenology demonstrated the marked effects of the recent increase in temperature on the phenological traits of secondary meristems. In the long run, the advancement of cambial activity could modify the short time window for growth of boreal species and dramatically affect the dynamics and productivity of trees in these temperature-limited ecosystems.

The radial growth of plant stem is based on the development of cribro-vascular cambium tissues. It affects the transport efficiency of water, mineral nutrients and photoassimilates and, ultimately, also plant height. The rate of cambial cell divisions for the assembly of new xylem and phloem tissue primordia and the rate of differentiation of the primordia into mature tissues determine the amount of biomass produced and, in the case of woody species, the wood quality. These complex physiological processes proceed at a rate which depends on several factors, acting at various levels: growth regulators, resource availability and environmental factors. Several hormonal signals and, more recently, further regulatory molecules, have been shown to be involved in the induction and maintenance of cambium and the formation of secondary vascular tissues. The control of xylem cell patterning is of particular interest, because it determines the diameter of xylem vessels, which is central to the efficiency of water and nutrient transport from roots to leaves through the stem and may strongly influence the growth in height of the tree. Increasing scientific evidence have proved the role of other hormones in cambial cell activities and the study of the hormonal signals and their crosstalking in cambial cells may foster our understanding of the dynamics of xylogenesis and of the mechanism of vessel size control along the stem. In this article, the role of the hormonal signals involved in the control of cambium and xylem development in trees and their crosstalking are reviewed.

The dynamics of phloem growth ring formation in silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) at different sites in Slovenia during the droughty growing season of 2003 was studied. We also determined the timing of cambial activity, xylem and phloem formation, and counted the number of cells in the completed phloem and xylem growth rings. Light microscopy of cross-sections revealed that cambial activity started on the phloem and xylem side simultaneously at all three plots. However, prior to this, 1–2 layers of phloem derivatives near the cambium were differentiated without previous divisions. The structure of the early phloem was similar in silver fir and Norway spruce. Differences in the number of late phloem cells were found among sites. Phloem growth rings were the widest in Norway spruce growing at the lowland site. In all investigated trees, the cambium produced 5–12 times more xylem cells than phloem ones. In addition, the variability in the number of cells in the 2003 growth ring around the stem circumference of the same tree and among different trees was higher on the xylem side than on the phloem side. Phloem formation is presumably less dependent on environmental factors but is more internally driven than xylem formation.

Dendrometer measurements are a frequently used alternative to the laborious and time consuming microcoring to investigate intra-annual growth dynamics of trees. However, since dendrometer data not only comprise cambial growth, but also hydrological fluctuations, both signals need to be disentangled to derive critical dates of xylem phenology from dendrometer data. For this purpose, various approaches can be found in the literature, however a systematic comparison of the different options is still missing. In this study we present a methodological framework to evaluate the accuracy of different mathematical fittings to derive tree-ring phenology from dendrometer data and apply this approach to a data set comprised of three conifer species where high-resolution band dendrometer measurements and microcore sampling have been done in parallel. Based on our study we provide evidence that the most common approaches to derive onset and cessation of xylem cell enlargement from dendrometer data, i.e. applying absolute and relative thresholds to deterministic models fitted to dendrometer data, caused systematic deviations from the reference of xylogenesis observations, but could be improved by small adaptations. The most precise and unbiased predictions of xylem growth phenology were obtained by fitting the three-parameter Gompertz model to the dendrometer data and applying a relative threshold of 3.5% of annual increment to the model predictions for growth onset and an absolute threshold of 4.5 µm day-1 based on the first model derivative for growth cessation. Our framework enables an improved usage of dendrometer data for the prediction of the onset and cessation of xylem cell enlargement, which are important ecological indicators to quantify the effects environmental changes on forest growth and the terrestrial carbon cycle.

Temperature, water availability and photoperiod are the primary drivers of tree phenological processes. However, there is lack of information how the spring temperature and summer drought affect phenology of both cambium and needles. We evaluated the interplay between xylem and needle development of mature Scots pine trees in three consecutive years differing in the spring temperatures and onset and duration of summer drought. Cambial activity began on the day of a year (DOY) 83–87, while the bud break occurred on DOY 113–119, when also the secondary cell wall of tracheids started its formation. While the timing of bud break correlated with the sum of effective temperatures, the beginning of cambial zone activity did not. The needles were fully unfolded around DOY 170, which corresponded to the transition between earlywood and latewood tracheids. Summer drought did not affect needle development, but it changed the rate of production and morphology of latewood tracheids. Latewood tracheids from the year 2015 when the drought was longest (i.e. until the second half of August in 2015 compared to the duration from June until the middle of July in the two other years) were 32% narrower and they had 34% thinner cell walls than in 2014 and 2016. The improvement of tree water status in July resulted in the formation of intra-annual density fluctuations (IADF). The interplay between needle and cambium phenology provided an insight into how the tree allocates the resources with varying temperature and soil water availability.

Climate change is altering phenology; however, the magnitude of this change varies among taxa. Compared with phenological mismatch between plants and herbivores, synchronization due to climate has been less explored, despite its potential implications for trophic interactions. The earlier budburst induced by defoliation is a phenological strategy for plants against herbivores. Here, we tested whether warming can counteract defoliation‐induced mismatch by increasing herbivore‐plant phenological synchrony. We compared the larval phenology of spruce budworm and budburst in balsam fir, black spruce, and white spruce saplings subjected to defoliation in a controlled environment at temperatures of 12, 17, and 22°C. Budburst in defoliated saplings occurred 6–24 days earlier than in the controls, thus mismatching needle development from larval feeding. This mismatch decreased to only 3–7 days, however, when temperatures warmed by 5 and 10°C, leading to a resynchronization of the host with spruce budworm larvae. The increasing synchrony under warming counteracts the defoliation‐induced mismatch, disrupting trophic interactions and energy flow between forest ecosystem and insect populations. Our results suggest that the predicted warming may improve food quality and provide better growth conditions for larval development, thus promoting longer or more intense insect outbreaks in the future.

Differences in the timing of cambial reactivation and the initiation of xylem differentiation in response to the sum of daily maximum temperatures were studied in two Cryptomeria japonica trees with cambium of different ages under natural and locally heated conditions. In addition, we observed the effects of low temperature on cambial activity. The timing of cambial reactivation and of the initiation of xylem differentiation differed between 55- and 80-year-old cambium under natural conditions. In the 55-year-old cambium, cambial reactivation occurred when the cambial reactivation index (CRI), calculated on the basis of daily maximum temperatures in excess of 10°C, was 94 and 97°C in 2007 and 2008, respectively. In 80-year-old cambium, cambial reactivation occurred when the CRI, calculated on the basis of daily maximum temperatures in excess of 11°C, was 69 and 71°C in 2007 and 2008, respectively. After cambial reactivation in 2007, normal cell division was evident in the cambium even though the minimum temperature had fallen between −2 and −3°C. Under natural conditions, xylem differentiation started 38–44 days after cambial reactivation. In heated stems, the time between cambial reactivation and the initiation of xylem differentiation ranged from 14 to 16 days, a much shorter time than under natural conditions, indicating that continuous exposure to an elevated temperature had induced earlier xylem differentiation. Our observations indicate that the sensitivity to reactivation inducing stimuli of the cambium depends on both the stage of dormancy and tree age of the cambium.

Future seasonal dynamics of wood formation in hyperarid environments are still unclear. Although temperature‐driven extension of the growing season and increased forest productivity are expected for boreal and temperate biomes under global warming, a similar trend remains questionable in water‐limited regions. We monitored cambial activity in a montane stand of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) from the Mojave Desert for 2 consecutive years (2015–2016) showing opposite‐sign anomalies between warm‐ and cold‐season precipitation. After the wet winter/spring of 2016, xylogenesis started 2 months earlier compared to 2015, characterized by abundant monsoonal (July–August) rainfall and hyperarid spring. Tree size did not influence the onset and ending of wood formation, highlighting a predominant climatic control over xylem phenological processes. Moisture conditions in the previous month, in particular soil water content and dew point, were the main drivers of cambial phenology. Latewood formation started roughly at the same time in both years; however, monsoonal precipitation triggered the formation of more false rings and density fluctuations in 2015. Because of uncertainties in future precipitation patterns simulated by global change models for the Southwestern United States, the dependency of Pponderosa on seasonal moisture implies a greater conservation challenge than for species that respond mostly to temperature conditions.
