The occurrence of large burnt areas has increased considerably in southern Europe in recent years. In order to design management plans to prevent large wildfires while preserving biodiversity, understanding of the ways in which birds respond to these fires is required. We investigated the spatial variability of both avifauna and habitat structure in three zones: unburnt, burnt in 1982, and burnt in 1994. The habitat structure of the unburnt zone was the most variable spatially. However, bird species composition between sampling points was very homogeneous in space. In contrast, the bird communities inhabiting burnt zones were more spatially heterogeneous. This pattern was caused by distinct specific responses to variations in habitat structure. Open-space species responded to small changes in habitat structure with large changes in local abundance, whereas the response of forest species to these structural variations was much less. We suggest that land managers should select specific zones with limited vegetation recovery within large burnt areas and maintain them as open space to keep combustibility low and provide an appropriate habitat for several open space species that are of conservation concern.  相似文献

  • 1 We investigated, over the course of 2 years, the spatial distribution and abundance of two species of aphid, Metopolophium dirhodum and Sitobion avenae, and predatory species of carabid. This was undertaken in 24 wheat fields in ‘coarse‐grain’ and ‘fine‐grain’ landscapes in western France. A greater percentage of the latter landscape was covered by hedgerows and grassland and the total area covered by fields and the average size of the fields were smaller.
  • 2 The effects on aphid abundance of the distance from field margins, the presence of grassy strips and carabid abundance were determined in both landscapes.
  • 3 Both aphid species were more abundant in the ‘fine‐grain’ landscape, which may have been a result of the higher density of semi‐natural elements. In both types of landscape, the total numbers of aphids were negatively correlated with the distance from the field margin. This may have been because aphids were dispersing from overwintering sites in field margins. The abundance of M. dirhodum was strongly negatively correlated with the presence of grassy strips in the ‘coarse‐grain’ landscape, although there were no such significant correlations for either of the aphid species in the ‘fine‐grain’ landscape.

The present study analyses the relationships of a set of 19 macroinvertebrate community metrics in relation to hydromorphological and water quality stress gradients in the Pas river basin, Northern Spain. Moreover, this study also aims to identify the most sensible season for biomonitoring this temperate Atlantic basin by means of macroinvertebrate communities. Thus, macroinvertebrate communities were analysed, along with the physicochemical characteristics of water in January, April, August and November 2005, in 9 sites. Hydromorphological conditions were evaluated using the Hydrogeomorphologic Index and by quantifying the percentage of reinforced banks, the number of low-head dams and their distance to each study site. Hydromorphological and water quality stress gradients were determined by means of two independent Principal Component Analysis. Thus, we obtained two water quality stress gradients, indicating organic pollution and watershed runoff, respectively, and a hydromorphological stress gradient. Macroinvertebrate metrics correlated better with the hydromorphological and the organic pollution stress gradients during the stable flow season, probably because of the homogenisation of water and hydraulic characteristics in the high flow season. On the other hand, relationships between macroinvertebrate metrics and watershed runoff stress gradient seem to be more dominated by hydraulic conditions than by water quality characteristics. LIFE index and the ICMi were the macroinvertebrate metrics that best correlated with the hydromorphological stress gradient, while EPTt, EPt, IBMWP, ASPT, LIFE, AsMet, Rhet, NoIns% and MACh% were well correlated with the organic pollution stress gradient in the low flow period. EPTt, EPt, ASPT, Rhet, and AsMet did not show significant seasonal differences and, thus, they are recommended as appropriate metrics to integrate biomonitoring results from different seasons in temperate European Atlantic rivers. Finally, autumn seems to be the best season to sample macroinvertebrate communities in this temperate Atlantic basin for biomonitoring purposes, and might be also the case for other similar European rivers.  相似文献

Natural enemy–victim systems may exhibit a range of dynamic space–time patterns. We used a theoretical framework to study spatiotemporal structuring in a transient natural enemy–victim system subject to differential rates of dispersal, stochastic forcing, and nonlinear dynamics. Highly mobile natural enemies that attacked less mobile victims were locally spatially segregated from each other when governed by approximate linear dynamics. In contrast, in nonlinear dynamical systems, such as cyclic populations, interacting species achieved local aggregation with each other regardless of dispersal rates, and aggregation was enhanced specifically when highly mobile enemies attacked less mobile victims. These patterns of spatial aggregation held under varying levels of stochastic forcing. This work thus shows a range of dynamic spatial patterns in interacting-species models, and how spatial aggregation between natural enemies and victims can be achieved in locally unstable populations that are linked through dispersal.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of different relative loading levels on the EMG activity of Vastus Medialis Oblique (VMO) and Vastus Laterialis (VL). Previous research into the EMG temporal and spatial relationship between VMO and VL has increased the controversy surrounding the topic, due to the majority of studies failing to be consistent in electrode placement, level of loading and subject selection. It is generally believed that the nature of the loading task will significantly affect results; despite this few studies have controlled relative load level between subjects. EMG activity of VMO and VL was measured at four load levels (MIVC, 75%, 50% and 25% of MIVC) in 10 asymptomatic male subjects. No difference in onset of activity was found between VMO and VL (p > 0.05) and onset of activity was not affected by level of load (p > 0.05). The relative level of load had a significant effect both on overall activity of VMO and VL, and the ratio of their activity. The study has shown that relative level of load can have significant effects on the parameters measured and if this variable is not controlled for within the study design it becomes a potential confounding effect.  相似文献

Null model analyses have greatly improved our understanding of species co‐occurrence. Null model analyses have shown, for example, that cold‐blooded animals show less segregated distributions than warm‐blooded animals. This topic has rarely been studied simultaneously across multiple metacommunities. We analysed data on 10 stream metacommunities (with 10 communities in each metacommunity) of a cold‐blooded animal group, benthic macroinvertebrates, and examined co‐occurrence within five ecological guilds. We found that the segregated species co‐occurrence was not the rule in stream invertebrate guilds. This was evidenced by the finding that only 10% of the 50 guild matrices we analyzed showed significant segregation and no matrices showed significant aggregation in the within‐stream analyses. However, in the across‐streams analysis, all guilds showed significant segregation. We neither found differences in the degree of segregation among the guilds, the degree of species segregation did not increase with overall environmental heterogeneity, and there were no differences in the relationships between species segregation and overall environmental heterogeneity among the guilds. Expanding the spatial extent from single stream metacommunities (i.e. within each stream) to the whole study region (i.e. across the streams) increased significantly segregation in all guilds. Because environmental heterogeneity across streams was much higher than within single streams, overall environmental heterogeneity may nevertheless have effects on species segregation. It also seems that the effects of overall heterogeneity on species segregation were masked by mass effects in the within‐stream analyses.  相似文献

Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a common condition that occurs more frequently in females. Anatomical, hormonal and neuromuscular factors have been proposed to contribute to the increased incidence of PFP in females, with neuromuscular factors considered to be of particular importance. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate differences in the neuromotor control of the knee and hip muscles between genders and to investigate whether clinical measures of hip rotation range and strength were associated with EMG measures of hip and thigh motor control. Twenty-nine (16 female and 13 male) asymptomatic participants completed a visual choice reaction-time stair stepping task. EMG activity was recorded from vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis, anterior and posterior gluteus medius muscles. In addition hip rotation range of motion and hip external rotation, abduction and trunk strength were assessed. There were no differences in the timing or peak of EMG activation of the vasti or gluteus medius muscle between genders during the stepping task. There were however significant associations between EMG measures of motor control of the vasti and hip strength in both females and males. These findings are suggestive of a link between hip muscle control and vasti neuromotor control.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of adult plants are a consequence of several ecological processes related to seed dispersal and recruitment. Dispersal limitation, mediated by dispersal syndrome, is considered a key factor in the formation of adult plant spatial patterns. Although this initial pattern determined by dispersal has been thoroughly studied, the subsequently modification by the effect of additional ecological factors, such as habitat heterogeneity is less understood. We explored the relative importance of dispersal syndrome and spatial heterogeneity on the realization of spatial patterns of adult trees in an Ecuadorian tropical dry forest. The spatial distribution of 28 species was modeled with four different spatial point processes each: homogeneous Poisson (HPP), inhomogeneous Poisson (IPP), homogeneous Poisson cluster (HPCP), and inhomogeneous Poisson cluster process (IPCP). These models allowed us to discern between effects of random processes, habitat heterogeneity, limited dispersal, and joint effects of habitat heterogeneity and limited dispersal. We employed Akaike's information criterion (AIC) to select the model which best fit the spatial pattern of each species. The best model of each species was used to analyze differences in cluster size and degree of aggregation, between dispersal syndromes. Seventy‐five percent of the species showed inhomogeneous patterns. IPCP yielded the best fit for the spatial distribution of 50% of species in the studied forest and was the prevalent model for the three dispersal syndromes. Thus, the effect of spatial heterogeneity was prevalent in the distribution of most species in this dry tropical forest. Only 21% of species had spatial patterns compatible with random mechanisms associated to limited dispersal around parent sources. Clearly, ignoring habitat heterogeneity could bias the analysis of relationships between dispersal syndrome and species patterns.  相似文献

Riparian deforestation is a major threat to the ecological integrity of streams and aquatic biodiversity, influencing microhabitat availability and susceptibility to disturbances. Here we tested if riparian deforestation of tropical streams influenced beta diversity of macroinvertebrate assemblages, by comparing indices that weighted differentially rare and dominant taxa, and testing if nestedness in community composition increased in deforested streams. Within-stream beta diversity was higher in deforested than forested streams, mainly due to taxon loss and higher dominance. In disturbed streams, higher sedimentation in pool mesohabitats resulted in larger differences in community composition, whereas mesohabitats in forested streams were more stable.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of long-term fertilization and acute Zn toxicity on the size, nitrification activity and community structure of autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing populations of the β-subgroup of the class Proteobacteria in arable soils. Plots under different long-term fertilization regimes were sampled, and then different concentrations of ZnCl2 were spiked into soil samples for 8 weeks. It was found that long-term fertilization significantly increased nitrification rates and population size, and there was a positive correlation between them. A shift in the composition of AOB was also detected in samples fertilized with mineral N fertilizer (NPK) and organic matter (OM) as compared to unfertilized sample. EC50 values suggested that there was no significant difference in Zn toxicity to nitrification rates among the three fertilization treatments. Long-term fertilization did not improve the resilience of AOB activity to Zn toxicity.  相似文献

We applied individual-based simulations to study the effect of physiological integration among ramets in clonal species that live in patchy habitats. Three strategies were compared: (1) Splitter, in which the genet was fragmented into independent ramets; (2) Transient Integrator, where only groups of ramets were connected; and (3) Permanent Integrator, in which fragmentation did not occur, and the whole genet was integrated. We studied the dynamics of spatial spreading and population growth in these strategies separately and in competition. Various habitat types were modeled by changing the density of favorable habitat patches. We found that the spatial pattern of good patches significantly influenced the growth of the populations. When the resource patches were scarce, a large proportion of the carrying capacity of the habitat was not utilized by any of the strategies. It was the Splitter that proved to be the most severely dispersal-limited. But at the same time, it could compete for the good patches most efficiently. The balance between these two contradictory effects was largely determined by the proportion of favorable to unfavorable areas. When this proportion was low or intermediate (up to ca. 50% good), integration was more advantageous. At higher proportions, fragmentation became beneficial. Fragmentation into groups of ramets (Transient Integration) was not sufficient, only radical splitting could ensure a significant selective advantage. Transient Integrators got fragmented according to the spatial pattern of ramet mortality. It was interesting that the enrichment of the area in good sites did not lead to larger fragment sizes. It merely raised the number of fragments. Nevertheless, these small fragments were more similar to integrated genets (in the Permanent Integrator) than to solitary ramets (in the Splitter) in terms of dispersal and competitive ability. This suggests that even a slightly integrated clonal species can be ecologically considered as an integrator.  相似文献

Anthropogenic activities in urban ecosystems induce a myriad of environmental changes compared with adjacent rural areas. These environmental changes can be seen as series of abiotic and biotic selection filters affecting the distribution of plant species. What are the attributes of plant species that compose urban communities, compared with rural communities, as related to their ecological affinities (e.g., to temperature, humidity), and reproductive traits (e.g., entomophily, autogamy, floral morphology)? Using a floristic dataset from a citizen science project recording plant species growing spontaneously in the streets, we analyzed the distribution of species according to their ecological requirements and reproductive traits along an urbanization gradient in the Parisian region. We developed an original floral and pollinator typology composed of five floral and four pollinator morphotypes. The proportion of impervious areas, used as a proxy of urbanization, was measured at different spatial scales, to reveal at which spatial scales urbanization is selecting plant traits. We found significant differences in plant communities along the urbanization gradient. As expected with the warmer and drier conditions of urban areas, species with higher affinities to higher temperature, light and nutrient soil content, and lower atmospheric moisture were over‐represented in urban plant communities. Interestingly, all of the significant changes in plant abiotical affinities were the most pronounced at the largest scale of analysis (1,000 m buffer radius), probably because the specific urban conditions are more pronounced when they occur on a large surface. The proportion of autogamous, self‐compatible, and nonentomophilous species was significantly higher in urban plant communities, strongly suggesting a lower abundance or efficiency of the pollinating fauna in urban environments. Last, among insect‐pollinated species, those with relatively long and narrow tubular corollas were disadvantaged in urban areas, possibly resulting from a reduction in pollinator abundance particularly affecting specialized plant–pollinator interactions.  相似文献

1. The mechanisms that structure biological communities hold the key to understanding ecosystem functioning and the maintenance of biodiversity. Patterns of species abundances have been proposed as a means of differentiation between niche-based and neutral processes, but abundance information alone cannot provide unequivocal discrimination. 2. We combined species niche information and species' relative abundances to test the effects of two opposing structuring mechanisms (environmental filtering and niche complementarity) on species' relative abundances in French lacustrine fish communities. The test involved a novel method comparing the abundance-weighted niche overlap within communities against that expected when relative abundances were randomized among species within the community. 3. Observed overlap was consistently significantly lower than expected at random for two (swimming ability and trophic status) of four primary niche axes across lakes of differing physical environments. Thus, for these niche axes, pairs of abundant species tended to have relatively low niche overlap, while rare species tended to have relatively high niche overlap with abundant species. 4. This suggests that niche complementarity may have acted to enhance ecosystem function and that it is important for species coexistence in these fish communities. The method used may be easily applied to any sort of biological community and thus may have considerable potential for determining the generality of niche complementarity effects on community structure.  相似文献

Among miners, shift work, aging and lack of control at work may be factors leading to increased sleep problems. Such risk factors may also operate in interaction, resulting in an even increased harm for sleep disruption. The present study aims at evaluating these relationships drawing on a sample of Australian mine and energy workers and their partners. The workers were mainly men. All performed shift work that included either nights (95%) or multiple shifts (92%), usually both (87%), while 36% were aged 50 years or above. The results show that low latitude over work activities is associated with higher sleep disturbances across the sample, though the effects are clearer amongst younger workers. By contrast, for younger workers, control over shift scheduling is not associated with sleep disturbances but for workers aged 50 or more, low control results in more sleep disturbance. Misalignment between shift workers and partner work schedules, and partner dissatisfaction with shift worker's employment and shift worker's work-life balance, are also associated with more sleep disturbances amongst shift workers.  相似文献

Globally, moss associated invertebrates remain poorly studied and it is largely unknown to what extent their diversity is driven by local environmental conditions or the landscape context. Here, we investigated small scale drivers of invertebrate communities in a moss landscape in a temperate forest in Western Europe. By comparing replicate quadrats of 5 different moss species in a continuous moss landscape, we found that mosses differed in invertebrate density and community composition. Although, in general, richness was similar among moss species, some invertebrate taxa were significantly linked to certain moss species. Only moss biomass and not relative moisture content could explain differences in invertebrate densities among moss species. Second, we focused on invertebrate communities associated with the locally common moss species Kindbergia praelonga in isolated moss patches on dead tree trunks to look at effects of patch size, quality, heterogeneity and connectivity on invertebrate communities. Invertebrate richness was higher in patches under closed canopies than under more open canopies, presumably due to the higher input of leaf litter and/or lower evaporation. In addition, increased numbers of other moss species in the same patch seemed to promote invertebrate richness in K. praelonga, possibly due to mass effects. Since invertebrate richness was unaffected by patch size and isolation, dispersal was probably not limiting in this system with patches separated by tens of meters, or stochastic extinctions may be uncommon. Overall, we conclude that invertebrate composition in moss patches may not only depend on local patch conditions, in a particular moss species, but also on the presence of other moss species in the direct vicinity.  相似文献
