We describe a form of experience-dependent response enhancement in the visual cortex of awake mice. Repeated presentations of grating stimuli of a single orientation result in a persistent enhancement of responses evoked by the test stimulus. Response potentiation is specific to the orientation of the test stimulus, develops gradually over the course of several training sessions, and occurs in both juvenile and adult mice. The stimulus-selective response potentiation (SRP) can mask deprivation-induced response depression in adult mice. SRP requires NMDA receptor activation and is prevented by viral delivery of a peptide that interferes with AMPA receptor trafficking. SRP may reveal the mechanisms involved in certain forms of perceptual learning.  相似文献

Before we can recognize a visual object, our visual system has to segregate it from its background. This requires a fast mechanism for establishing the presence and location of objects independently of their identity. Recently, border-ownership neurons were recorded in monkey visual cortex which might be involved in this task [Zhou, H., Friedmann, H., von der Heydt, R., 2000. Coding of border ownership in monkey visual cortex. J. Neurosci. 20 (17), 6594-6611]. In order to explain the basic mechanisms required for fast coding of object presence, we have developed a neural network model of visual cortex consisting of three stages. Feed-forward and lateral connections support coding of Gestalt properties, including similarity, good continuation, and convexity. Neurons of the highest area respond to the presence of an object and encode its position, invariant of its form. Feedback connections to the lowest area facilitate orientation detectors activated by contours belonging to potential objects, and thus generate the experimentally observed border-ownership property. This feedback control acts fast and significantly improves the figure-ground segregation required for the consecutive task of object recognition.  相似文献

In order to attain a correct interpretation of an ambiguous visual stimulus, the brain may have to elaborate on the sensory evidence. Are the neurons that carry the sensory evidence also involved in generating an interpretation? To address this question, we studied the activity of neurons in the primary visual cortex of macaque monkeys involved in a task in which they have to trace a curve mentally, without moving their eyes. On a percentage of trials, the monkeys made errors and traced the wrong curve. Here, we show that these errors are predicted by activity in area V1. Thus, neurons in the primary visual cortex do not only represent sensory events, but also the way in which they are interpreted by the monkey.  相似文献

Knowledge or experiences are voluntarily recalled from memory by reactivation of their neural representations in the association cortex. Mnemonic representations of visual objects, located in the ventral processing stream of visual perception, provide the best indication of how neuronal codes are created, organized and reactivated. Associative codes are created by neurons that have the ability to link the representations of temporally associated stimuli. Recent experiments suggest that not only bottom-up signals from the retina but also top-down signals from the prefrontal cortex can trigger the retrieval of associative codes, which may serve as a neural basis for conscious recall.  相似文献

The human visual system can distinguish variations in image contrast over a much larger range than measurements of the static relationship between contrast and response in visual cortex would suggest. This discrepancy may be explained if adaptation serves to re-center contrast response functions around the ambient contrast, yet experiments on humans have yet to report such an effect. By using event-related fMRI and a data-driven analysis approach, we found that contrast response functions in V1, V2, and V3 shift to approximately center on the adapting contrast. Furthermore, we discovered that, unlike earlier areas, human V4 (hV4) responds positively to contrast changes, whether increments or decrements, suggesting that hV4 does not faithfully represent contrast, but instead responds to salient changes. These findings suggest that the visual system discounts slow uninformative changes in contrast with adaptation, yet remains exquisitely sensitive to changes that may signal important events in the environment.  相似文献

As a precursor to the selection of a stimulus for gaze and attention, a midbrain network categorizes stimuli into "strongest" and "others." The categorization tracks flexibly, in real time, the absolute strength of the strongest stimulus. In this study, we take a first-principles approach to computations that are essential for such categorization. We demonstrate that classical feedforward lateral inhibition cannot produce flexible categorization. However, circuits in which the strength of lateral inhibition varies with the relative strength of competing stimuli categorize successfully. One particular implementation--reciprocal inhibition of feedforward lateral inhibition--is structurally the simplest, and it outperforms others in flexibly categorizing rapidly and reliably. Strong predictions of this anatomically supported circuit model are validated by neural responses measured in the owl midbrain. The results demonstrate the extraordinary power of a remarkably simple, neurally grounded circuit motif in producing flexible categorization, a computation fundamental to attention, perception, and decision making.  相似文献

This work was undertaken in order to assess the organization of the prelimbic area of the medial prefrontal cortex of rats exposed prenatally to cocaine. Pregnant Wistar rats were assigned to the following groups:
  1. Cocaine—60 mg/kg body wt/d sc, from gestational days 8–22; 0131
  2. Saline;
  3. Pair-fed; and
  4. Nonmanipulated.
Male offspring were perfused on postnatal days 14 and 30. Six brains per group and per age were embedded in celloidin to calculate the volumes of the prelimbic area; sections from the other six brains were embedded in resin and processed for electron microscopy. Using semithin sections (2 μm) of layers II–III and V–VI, the following parameters were calculated:
  1. The fraction of the neuropil occupied by neurons (VV);
  2. The packing (NA) density; and
  3. The numerical (NV) density.
Qualitative alterations consisted of dispersed profiles of degenerated neurons and dendrites in the medial prefrontal cortex. No significant differences were found in the gross morphometric parameters when the cocaine group was compared with the other groups. A high interanimal variation was shown in the prelimbic volumes of postnatal day (PND) 14 cocaine-treated rats, and a decrease in volumes was detected at PND30. Although there are some alterations in the main afferent cortical target area for dopaminergic input, its gross morphometric parameters do not seem to be sufficiently affected to account for the behavioral alterations referred to as being dependent on this brain region.  相似文献

Neuronal discharges in the primate temporal lobe, but not in the striate and extrastriate cortex, reliably reflect stimulus awareness. However, it is not clear whether visual consciousness should be uniquely localized in the temporal association cortex. Here we used binocular flash suppression to investigate whether visual awareness is also explicitly reflected in feature-selective neural activity of the macaque lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC), a cortical area reciprocally connected to the temporal lobe. We show that neuronal discharges in the majority of single units and recording sites in the LPFC follow the phenomenal perception of a preferred stimulus. Furthermore, visual awareness is reliably reflected in the power modulation of high-frequency (>50?Hz) local field potentials in sites where spiking activity is found to be perceptually modulated. Our results suggest that the activity of neuronal populations in at least two association cortical areas represents the content of conscious visual perception.  相似文献

By the third postnatal week, intrinsic developmental programs have established a framework within the cat visual system; this will be used to guide the course of subsequent experience-dependent development. Key elements in this framework are precociously mature cells in visual cortex area 17. These orientation-selective cells are predominantly first-order neurons, they are concentrated in layers IV and VI of area 17, most of them are activated monocularly, many may receive their direct excitatory input from lateral geniculate nucleus X cells, and the distribution of their preferred orientations is biased toward horizontal and vertical. Between the third and the sixth postnatal week, most of the remaining cells in area 17 develop orientation selectivity; this extension of orientation selectivity is blocked or delayed if kittens are deprived of normal patterned visual stimulation. Furthermore, exposure to a limited range of stimulus orientations can lead to an increase in the proportion of orientation-selective cells, and the range of orientation preferences that the cells acquire is restricted by the range of orientations to which the animal is exposed. This occurs with no apparent change in the physiology or morphology of intrinsically selective area 17 cells. Thus selective exposure may have its effect by influencing the connections between the intrinsically selective cells and higher-order neurons in area 17. Experience-dependent changes in the visual system may function to "fine-tune" sensory processing and thus optimize the system's response to the dominant features of the environment. This experience-dependent process could help the young animal to focus its "attention" on those features of its environment that are critical to its survival.  相似文献

Behavioral planning in the prefrontal cortex   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Recent studies have presented evidence that the prefrontal cortex plays a crucial role in every aspect of the cognitive processes necessary for behavioral planning: processing and integration of perceived or memorized information, associative learning, reward-based behavioral control, behavioral selection/decision-making and behavioral guidance. We propose that the creation of novel information is the means by which the prefrontal cortex operates to achieve executive control over behavioral planning. The prefrontal cortex is the site of operation of nodal points, where neural circuits integrate currently available or memorized information to generate the information that is necessary to perform an action. The prefrontal cortex also regulates the flow of information through multiple nodes to meet behavioral demands.  相似文献

Excitotoxic neonatal ventral hippocampus (NVH) lesions in rats result in characteristic post-pubertal hyper-responsiveness to stress and cognitive abnormalities analogous to those described in schizophrenia and suggestive of alterations in dopamine (DA) neurotransmission. Converging lines of evidence also point to dysfunctions in the cortical cholinergic system in neuropsychiatric disorders. In previous studies, we observed alterations in dopaminergic modulation of acetylcholine (Ach) release in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in post-pubertal NVH-lesioned rats. These two neurotransmitter systems are involved in the stress response as PFC release of DA and Ach is enhanced in response to some stressful stimuli. As adult NVH-lesioned rats are behaviorally more reactive to stress, we investigated the effects of NVH lesions on tail-pinch stress-induced Ach and DA release in the PFC. Using in vivo microdialysis, we observed that tail-pinch stress resulted in significantly greater increases in prefrontal cortical Ach release in post-pubertal NVH-lesioned rats (220% baseline) compared with sham-operated controls (135% baseline). Systemic administration of the D1-like receptor antagonist SCH 23390 (0.5 mg/kg i.p.) or the D2-like receptor antagonist haloperidol (0.2 mg/kg i.p.), as well as intra-PFC administration of the D2-like antagonist sulpiride (100 microm), reduced stress-induced Ach release in PFC of adult NVH-lesioned rats. By contrast, intra-PFC administration of SCH 23390 (100 microm) failed to affect stress-induced Ach release in PFC of NVH-lesioned rats. Interestingly, using in vivo voltammetry, stress-induced stimulation of PFC DA release was found to be attenuated in adult NVH-lesioned rats. Taken together, these data suggest developmentally specific reorganization of prefrontal cortical cholinergic innervation notably regarding its regulation by DA neurotransmission.  相似文献

Working memory (WM) capacity and WM processing speed are simple cognitive measures that underlie human performance in complex processes such as reasoning and language comprehension. These cognitive measures have shown to be interrelated in behavioral studies, yet the neural mechanism behind this interdependence has not been elucidated. We have carried out two functional MRI studies to separately identify brain regions involved in capacity and speed. Experiment 1, using a block-design WM verbal task, identified increased WM capacity with increased activity in right prefrontal regions, and Experiment 2, using a single-trial WM verbal task, identified increased WM processing speed with increased activity in similar regions. Our results suggest that right prefrontal areas may be a common region interlinking these two cognitive measures. Moreover, an overlap analysis with regions associated with binding or chunking suggest that this strategic memory consolidation process may be the mechanism interlinking WM capacity and WM speed.  相似文献

Changed orientational tuning (OT) in 58 visual cortex units was investigated during acute experiments on immobilized cats under light short-lasting sombrevine-induced anesthesia. A 47.6±5.6° alteration in the preferred orientation of 60% of cells occurred following sombrevine injection but no change occurred at any stage of anesthesia in the remainder. The latter group showed a preference for horizontal and vertical orientations, less pronounced in the former category. "Stable" neurons also displayed less acute tuning and more selective detection in comparison with "unstable" units. Breadth of orientational tuning consistently changed by an average of 65.2±6.7° in 55% of neurons, while tuning deteriorated in 31% and sharpened in 24% of cells. No regular change in tuning band occurred in the remainder. Background firing rate and evoked spike activity declined by 58% and 35%, respectively under anesthesia in 2/3 of the cells tested. Tuning bandwidth of unit firing rate had generally recovered within 20–40 min after administering the anesthetic (i.e., as the anesthesia wore off).Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology Research Institute. Making optimal decisions in the face of uncertain or incomplete information arises as a common problem in everyday behavior, but the neural processes underlying this ability remain poorly understood. A typical case is navigation, in which a subject has to search for a known goal from an unknown location. Navigating under uncertain conditions requires making decisions on the basis of the current belief about location and updating that belief based on incoming information. Here, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging during a maze navigation task to study neural activity relating to the resolution of uncertainty as subjects make sequential decisions to reach a goal. We show that distinct regions of prefrontal cortex are engaged in specific computational functions that are well described by a Bayesian model of decision making. This permits efficient goal-oriented navigation and provides new insights into decision making by humans.  相似文献

Dopamine and the prefrontal cortex are critical for thought and behaviour. Recently, computational models have tried to elucidate the specific and intricate roles of dopamine in the prefrontal cortex, at the neurophysiological, system and behavioral levels, with varying degrees of success.  相似文献
