This study examines the evolution hindwing shape in Chinese dung beetle species using morphometric and phylogenetic analyses. Previous studies have analyzed the evolution of wing shape within a single or very few species, or by comparing only a few wing traits. No study has analyzed wing shape evolution of a large number of species, or quantitatively compared morphological variation of wings with proposed phylogenetic relationships. This study examines the morphological variation of hindwings based on 19 landmarks, 119 morphological characters, and 81 beetle species. Only one most parsimonious tree (MPT) was found based on 119 wing and body characters. To better understand the possible role of the hindwing in the evolution of Scarabaeinae, additional phylogenetic analyses were proposed based on the only body features (106 characters, wing characters excluded). Two MPT were found based on 106 body characters, and five nodes were collapsed in a strict consensus. There was a strong correlation between the morphometric tree and all phylogenetic trees (r>0.5). Reconstructions of the ancestral wing forms suggest that Scarabaeinae hindwing morphology has not changed substantially over time, but the morphological changes that do occur are focused at the base of the wing. These results suggest that flight has been important since the origin of Scarabaeinae, and that variation in hindwing morphology has been limited by functional constraints. Comparison of metric disparity values and relative evolutionary sequences among Scarabaeinae tribes suggest that the primitive dung beetles had relatively diverse hindwing morphologies, while advanced dung beetles have relatively similar wing morphologies. The strong correlation between the morphometric tree and phylogenetic trees suggest that hindwing features reflect the evolution of whole body morphology and that wing characters are suitable for the phylogenetic analyses. By integrating morphometric and cladistic approaches, this paper sheds new light on the evolution of dung beetle hind wings.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of the Acaenitinae, Oxy-torinae, and some of their component taxa, especially Cylloceria and Microleptes , are considered in light of new data from larval morphology. The Acaenitinae and Oxytorinae are sister-groups; the enigmatic oxytorine genus Microleptes is analysed with regard to its larval characters and is placed in to its own subfamily, the Microleptinae. The possibility that the Oxytorinae may be paraphyletic with respect to the Orthocentrinae is discussed. Re-examination of original slide mounts of last-instar larval remains has revealed errors in past studies; all previously published material, and several taxa whose larvae were hitherto unknown, are figured.  相似文献

A simple technique is described by which retinal whole mounts or slices of brain can be impregnated by the Golgi procedure in a graded manner. The unfixed tissue is laid on a glass slide and covered with a layer of Telfa gauze which is tied in place. Following fixation, the progress of staining, which begins beneath holes in the gauze, is followed by direct observation through the slide. The acid fuchsin is replaced by light cotton-blue (anilin blue, W. S.) in lacto-phenol, till the desired contrast is obtained. After this, the forms are mounted in pure lacto-phenol, using the coverglass. Phenotypic or morphological differences among different populations and sexual dimorphism in certain metric traits were analysed in D. bipectinata complex. It was noticed that different populations of D. bipectinata species group harbour large amount of variation for these characters. In all the populations, morphometric characters such as lengths of femur, tibia and wing length, wing width, number of sternopleural bristles and bristles on epandrium varied significantly among populations. The study indicates that the morphological variations are due to the interplay of genetic and environmental endowments. Further, females had significantly larger values, for lengths of femur, tibia and wing length, wing width and sternopleural bristles.  相似文献

The results of studies on the morphological diversity of wing structure in horseshoe bats (Rhinolophoidea) are considered in relation to ecological differentiation within the superfamily. Various skeletal elements of the wing are shown to form several groups of mutually correlated characters. The main groups comprise the characters that account for the size of the wing and play a role in the formation of its outer contours. The distribution of characters shows that they describe different aspects of variation and can provide a fairly complete picture of the morphological and ecological structure of the superfamily. The results obtained by means of multidimensional scaling and clustering methods primarily reflect ecological types of bats and only then characterize their taxonomic relationships. Analysis of variation in structural features of the wing within the superfamily Rhinolophoidea shows that the same wing form in different families may be accounted for by different ratios of digit elements, primarily the lengths of distal and proximal phalanges of digits III and IV.  相似文献

Insects were the first animals to take to the skies, and have been flying for over 320 million years. The order Ephemeroptera is, or at least is part of, the most early-diverging lineage of extant winged insects. The extant species present a very short adult life span, mainly dedicated to reproduction and dispersal of eggs. Mating and egg-laying behavior depend on flight. Wings are structures to fly and as such face a number of physical and physiological challenges. The convex curvature along the anterior–posterior axis of the wing generates a camber that must be carefully regulated. One of the most interesting ways of wing bending is provided by the bullae, which have been defined as short sections of flexible chitin, where the flexion lines cross veins. Although the bullae have been frequently used as taxonomic characters, there is no study focused on their morphology, although their prevalence on the wings of mayflies strongly suggests a role in flight. In order to identify evolutionary trends of these structures within Ephemeroptera, we constructed a matrix with comparative anatomy data of the bullae from whole mounts of the wings of 300 specimens belonging to 70 species of several mayfly families, as well as scanning microscopy samples of selected specimens. We also surveyed the number of bullae and their distribution in the wings of the different species within the South American Leptophlebiidae clade. We optimized the characters onto the latest published phylogeny for Leptophlebiidae.  相似文献

The Neotropical moth tribe Josiini (Notodontidae: Dioptinae) contains over 100 described species in 11 genera. All are diurnal, with brightly-coloured, presumably aposematic wing patterns. Larval hostplants are exclusively in the genus Passiflora (Passifloraceae) except for two new records, reported here, from Tumera (Turneraceae). A comparative morphological study of 26 representative josiine species yielded 86 characters from adults, larvae and pupae, all of which are figured and discussed. Phylogenetic analysis of these data produced a single most-parsimonious cladogram. According to the phylogenetic results: (1) monophyly of the Josiini is strongly supported; (2) the currently accepted generic classification is in disarray; (3) morphological character variation is extensive, and adult traits reflect phylogeny more effectively than do those of immature stages; (4) wing pattern types have undergone convergent evolution. A rare phenotype, longitudinal wing stripes, appears in two widely divergent clades, suggesting the evolution of Miillerian mimicry within the Josiini.  相似文献

Permanent preparations of squashes, whole mounts and stained sections can be made by lamination of thermoplastic sheets. Classical procedures of staining and dehydration for sectioned material were used although dehydration after staining was not required for root tip squashes. Arranging the specimen with the identification label between two pieces of clear Vinylite plastic, 15 mils thick, tightening the preparation in a Photo-Seal Kit electric press and laminating for 3 min gave a finished preparation without the use of glass slides and cover slips. For root tip squashes, the stained tip was placed with a drop of stain between two pieces of plastic, squashed and then laminated. This insured retention of all the tissue which is sometimes lost during mounting processes. Preparations of unstained whole mounts were similarly laminated, with an identification label added between the plastic sheets. Stained sections were placed between two sheets of plastic but the identification label was placed on top of the preparation and a third piece of plastic added. This prevented the label from absorbing excess stain and the increased thickness allowed the slide to be used in a mechanical stage. Well preserved slides 18 mo old indicate that the laminated plastic slide is quite durable. It saves time, reveals good cytological detail and avoids some of the laborious features of other methods. It is a technic that can be used in introductory microtechnic and in the preparation of slides for class use in histology.  相似文献

Osflintia manu, new genus, new species, of long-horned caddisfly (Leptoceridae: Triplectidinae: Grumichellini) is described and illustrated from southeastern Peru. The phylogeny of Grumichellini Morse (Leptoceridae: Triplectidinae) is revisited and hypotheses of homology of some morphological characters are reconsidered. The monophyly of the tribe is corroborated and the phylogenetic relationships of its included genera are inferred to be (Triplexa (Gracilipsodes ((Grumichella, Amazonatolica) (Atanatolica, Osflintia, n. gen.)))) from adult and larval characters. Diagnostic characters of the new genus include the following: reduced tibial spur formula (2, 2, 2), loss of forewing crossvein sc-r1, hind wing discoidal cell closed, hind wing fork IV present, pair of long setae on tergum IX of the male genitalia, and pair of processes on the apex of segment X.  相似文献

Wing venation provides useful characters with which to classify extant and fossil insects. Recently, quantification of its shape using landmarks has increased the potential of wing venation to distinguish taxa. However, the use of wing landmarks in phylogenetic analyses remains largely unexplored. Here, we tested landmark analysis under parsimony (LAUP) to include wing shape data in a phylogenetic analysis of hornets and yellow jackets. Using 68 morphological characters, nine genes and wing landmarks, we produced the first total‐evidence phylogeny of Vespinae. We also tested the influence of LAUP parameters using simulated landmarks. Our data confirmed that optimization parameters, alignment method, landmark number and, under low optimization parameters, the initial orientation of aligned shapes can influence LAUP results. Furthermore, single landmark configurations never accurately reflected the topology used for data simulation, but results were significantly close when compared to random topologies. Thus, wing landmark configurations were unreliable phylogenetic characters when treated independently, but provided some useful insights when combined with other data. Our phylogeny corroborated the monophyly of most groups proposed on the basis of morphology and showed the fossil Palaeovespa is distantly related to extant genera. Unstable relationships among genera suggest that rapid radiations occurred in the early history of the Vespinae.  相似文献

The surfaces of insect wings exhibit numerous sensilla, which have been suggested to have a behavioral function. Some evidence suggests that the sensory bristles along the wing margin of lepidopteran insects (butterflies and moths) are involved in the regulation of wing movement. We investigated the arrangement of sensory bristles along the wing margins of 62 species of papilionoid butterflies, using light-microscopic examination of mounts of whole wings after removing the scales surrounding the bristles. In the majority of the wings examined, bristles were located on the ventral wing surfaces and were continuously distributed along the wing margins, except in the vicinity of the wing bases. In some wings, bristles were also located on the dorsal wing surfaces, and were continuously or discontinuously distributed along the wing margins of different species. In a minority of the species studied, we observed bristle distribution in the vicinity of the wing base, discontinuous bristle distribution on both the dorsal and ventral wing surfaces, or an absence of bristles along the wing margins. This variation in the arrangement of bristles along the wing margins is discussed in relation to the reception and transmission of sensory information in the wings.  相似文献

Subtle morphological differences can be essential to diagnosing closely related species, and an understanding of the genetic basis of these characters can contribute to understanding their divergences. We used voucher specimens from previous genetic analyses of population structure to subsequently analyse genome-wide associations linking morphology to genetic variation in spruce budworms, a group of economically important and morphologically similar forest pests. In particular, we assessed the taxonomic value and genetic architecture of two morphological traits (wing pattern and genitalic spicule abundance) that have been reported to differ among spruce budworm species. Our results suggest that phallic spicule number has greater taxonomic utility than wing pattern for distinguishing Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) from Choristoneura occidentalis occidentalis Freeman and Choristoneura occidentalis biennis Freeman. However, there was considerable overlap among taxa for all phenotypic characters analysed. In a genome-wide association study, wing pattern variation was significantly associated with four single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci, including two adjacent SNPs. One SNP was flanked by sequence resembling RNA-directed DNA polymerase from mobile element jockey-like. This locus is a promising candidate for the study of wing pattern development in spruce budworms, as jockey-like transposable elements and polymerases have documented roles in wing spot production in other Lepidoptera. Our study links classical taxonomic characters and genomic data to provide insights into the potential genetic architecture of species differences. It also demonstrates previously untapped morphological and taxonomic value in voucher specimens from earlier molecular genetic analyses.  相似文献

Secondary sexual characters are assumed to be costly to produce and maintain, and this will select for morphological modifications that reduce the magnitude of such costs. Here we test whether a feather ornament, the sexually exaggerated outermost tail feathers of male barn swallows Hirundo rustica, a trait currently subject to a directional female mate preference, and other aspects of the morphology used for flight have been modified to increase aerodynamic performance. This was done by making comparisons among sexes within populations, among individuals varying in tail length within populations, and among populations from different parts of Europe. Male barn swallows experienced reduced drag from their elongated tail feathers by morphological modifications of the ornamental feathers as compared to females. Morphological features of the outermost tail feathers were unrelated to tail length in both males and females within populations. Wing and tail morphology (length of central tail feathers and wings, wing span, wing area, wing loading, and aspect ratio) was modified in males compared to females. Barn swallows with long tails had morphological tail and wing modifications that reduced the cost of a large ornament, and similar modifications were seen among populations. The costs of the exaggerated secondary sexual character were therefore reduced by the presence of cost-reducing morphological modifications. The assumptions of reliable signalling theory, that signals should be costly, but more so to low than to high quality individuals, were not violated because long-tailed male barn swallows had the largest cost-reducing morphological characters.  相似文献

Isolated populations represent one of the main focuses in conservation biology. Long-term isolation often causes losses of genetic diversity and as a consequence might reduce individual fitness. Morphometric characters can be used as suitable markers to analyse ecological stress and individual fitness of local populations. Asymmetry in bilateral symmetry is used as a measure for developmental instability of populations and is often negatively correlated with population size and low genetic diversity. As a study system, we selected the endangered butterfly Parnassius apollo, which occurs in small and isolated remnant populations in Central Europe, but also in fairly large metapopulations in the Alps. We analysed wing morphometrics (shape and size characters) of 812 individuals representing (1) already extinct, (2) highly isolated and (3) still interconnected populations. Seventeen landmarks on veins were used to analyse morphological variances in the wing shape. Our data show significant deviations between landmarks on the left and right wing side within individuals and strong morphological variance among individuals. The highest morphological variability could be found for individuals in the Alps, however, the level of asymmetry was very similar for all populations analysed. The higher morphological variability found in the Alps can be interpreted as a consequence of the higher level of the genetic diversity detectable for this region. Analysis on morphological variance of P. apollo individuals of the Mosel valley using time series ranging from 1895 until today showed no significant rise in asymmetry and no decline of morphological variability over time, although, anthropogenic habitat destruction has caused severe bottlenecks in this population.  相似文献

Understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms of morphological evolution is one of the greatest challenges in evolutionary biology. Sexually dimorphic traits, which often evolve at a high rate due to their involvement in mate choice and sexual selection, present unique opportunities for investigating changes in development over short evolutionary distances. Phylogenetic analysis is essential to provide a historical framework for comparative studies of development by establishing the order and polarity of morphological changes. In this report, we apply a new molecular phylogeny to reconstruct the evolution of male sexual characters in a group of species closely related to the model species Drosophila melanogaster. These highly variable traits include wing melanin patterns, the sex comb, and the structure of external genitalia and analia. We show that sexually dimorphic characters can diverge very rapidly among closely related species. More surprisingly, we also find a pervasive pattern of independent origin and secondary loss of male sexual traits in different evolutionary lineages.  相似文献

The patterns of variation in fluctuating asymmetry were studied in four morphological characters of the barn swallow Hirundo rustica. The level of absolute and relative asymmetry was larger in the secondary sexual character “outer tail length” than in three nonsexual morphological traits (wing, central tail, and tarsus length). The extent of individual asymmetry in outer tail length was negatively correlated with tail-ornament size, whereas the relationship between asymmetry of all other morphological characters and their size was flat or U-shaped. Asymmetry in outer tail length was unrelated to asymmetry in other morphological characters, whereas asymmetries in the length of wing, central tail, and tarsus were positively correlated. Male bam swallows exhibited larger asymmetry in outer tail length than females. Asymmetry of most morphological traits exhibited intermediate repeatabilities between years, with the exception of male and female outer tail length, which were highly repeatable. Tail asymmetry of offspring weakly, though significantly, resembled that of their parents. Asymmetry in wing and outer tail length was also significantly related to several fitness components. Male barn swallows that acquired a mate were less asymmetric in wing and outer tail length than unmated males. Females with more asymmetrical tails laid eggs significantly later. Annual reproductive success was unrelated to fluctuating asymmetry. Male barn swallows that survived were less asymmetric in wing and outer tail length than nonsurvivors, whereas female survivors were less asymmetric in outer tail length than nonsurvivors. These results suggest that levels of fluctuating asymmetry in barn swallows are associated with differences in fitness.  相似文献

通过解剖皱大球坚蚧Eulecanium kuwanai Kanda雌成虫, 对寄生在其内的纽绵蚧跳小蜂Encyrtus sasakii Ishii的各个虫期的形态特征进行了观察比较,并做了显微拍照。结果显示,纽绵蚧跳小蜂一年发生一代,以蛹在寄主体内越冬。除虫体由龄期引起的个体差异外,纽绵蚧跳小蜂的一、二龄幼虫腹部末端都具有长形通气柄,到第三、四龄期其通气柄变为尾囊状构造。成虫期的雌性小蜂中胸小盾片为黄色,前翅淡烟色并有一个暗斑,上密生黑色粗毛;雄性的为黑色,前翅色淡,无暗斑。  相似文献
