Research has shown that the mere presence of stimuli that resemble eyes is sufficient to attract attention, elicit aesthetic responses, and can even enhance prosocial behavior. However, it is less clear whether eye-like stimuli could also be used as a tool for nature conservation. Several animal species, including butterflies, develop eye-like markings that are known as eyespots. In the present research, we explored whether the mere display of eyespots on butterfly wings can enhance: (a) liking for a butterfly species, and (b) attitudes and behaviors towards conservation of a butterfly species. Four online experimental studies, involving 613 participants, demonstrated that eyespots significantly increased liking for a butterfly species. Furthermore, eyespots significantly increased positive attitudes towards conservation of a butterfly species (Studies 1, 2 and 4), whereas liking mediated the eyespot effect on conservation attitudes (Study 2). However, we also found some mixed evidence for an association between eyespots and actual conservation behavior (Studies 3 and 4). Overall, these findings suggest that eyespots may increase liking for an animal and sensitize humans to conservation. We discuss possible implications for biodiversity conservation and future research directions.  相似文献

Determinants of cooperation include ingroup vs. outgroup membership, and individual traits, such as prosociality and trust. We investigated whether these factors can be overridden by beliefs about people’s trust. We manipulated the information players received about each other’s level of general trust, “high” or “low”. These levels were either measured (Experiment 1) or just arbitrarily assigned labels (Experiment 2). Players’ choices whether to cooperate or defect in a stag hunt (or an assurance game)—where it is mutually beneficial to cooperate, but costly if the partner should fail to do so—were strongly predicted by what they were told about the other player’s trust label, as well as by what they were told that the other player was told about their own label. Our findings demonstrate the importance for cooperation in a risky coordination game of both first- and second-order beliefs about how much people trust each other. This supports the idea that institutions can influence cooperation simply by influencing beliefs.  相似文献

Previous research has shown that negative attitudes towards immigrants and support for anti-immigrant parties are observed both among those experiencing relative deprivation and those experiencing relative gratification (so called v-curve). Whereas the effect of relative deprivation is intuitive, the effect of relative gratification is more difficult to explain. Why would economic prosperity provoke negative attitudes towards immigrants? We first present correlational (Study 1) and experimental (Study 2) support for the v-curve. In Study 1, in a national Swiss referendum, a higher percentage anti-immigrant voting was found in cantons with relatively lower and relatively higher relative disposable income. In Study 2, in a hypothetical society, more opposition to ‘newcomers’ joining society was found among poor or above average wealth group members than among those in a moderate wealth group condition. In Study 3, we replicate this finding and also show that opposition to immigration is higher for all wealth groups when societal inequality is growing rather than declining. In a final study, we examine different forms of relative gratification and mediators of the relationship between relative gratification and opposition to immigration (i.e., identification, collective self-definition as competent and cold, and fear about future wealth). Only fear about future wealth mediates this relationship. We conclude that, paradoxically, relative gratification effects are partly due to the fear of future deprivation.  相似文献

The tendency to mimic the behaviour of others is affected by a variety of social factors, and it has been argued that such “mirroring” is often unconsciously deployed as a means of increasing affiliation during interpersonal interactions. However, the relationship between automatic motor imitation and status/power is currently unclear. This paper reports five experiments that investigated whether social status (Experiments 1, 2, and 3) or power (Experiments 4 and 5) had a moderating effect on automatic imitation (AI) in finger-movement tasks, using a series of different manipulations. Experiments 1 and 2 manipulated the social status of the observed person using an associative learning task. Experiment 3 manipulated social status via perceived competence at a simple computer game. Experiment 4 manipulated participants’ power (relative to the actors) in a card-choosing task. Finally, Experiment 5 primed participants using a writing task, to induce the sense of being powerful or powerless. No significant interactions were found between congruency and social status/power in any of the studies. Additionally, Bayesian hypothesis testing indicated that the null hypothesis should be favoured over the experimental hypothesis in all five studies. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for AI tasks, social effects on mimicry, and the hypothesis of mimicry as a strategic mechanism to promote affiliation.  相似文献

Visual crowding—the inability to see an object when it is surrounded by flankers in the periphery—does not block semantic activation: unrecognizable words due to visual crowding still generated robust semantic priming in subsequent lexical decision tasks. Based on the previous finding, the current study further explored whether unrecognizable crowded words can be temporally integrated into a phrase. By showing one word at a time, we presented Chinese four-word idioms with either a congruent or incongruent ending word in order to examine whether the three preceding crowded words can be temporally integrated to form a semantic context so as to affect the processing of the ending word. Results from both behavioral (Experiment 1) and Event-Related Potential (Experiment 2 and 3) measures showed congruency effect in only the non-crowded condition, which does not support the existence of unconscious multi-word integration. Aside from four-word idioms, we also found that two-word (modifier + adjective combination) integration—the simplest kind of temporal semantic integration—did not occur in visual crowding (Experiment 4). Our findings suggest that integration of temporally separated words might require conscious awareness, at least under the timing conditions tested in the current study.  相似文献

Recently, it has been demonstrated that objects held in working memory can influence rapid oculomotor selection. This has been taken as evidence that perceptual salience can be modified by active working memory representations. The goal of the present study was to examine whether these results could also be caused by feature-based priming. In two experiments, participants were asked to saccade to a target line segment of a certain orientation that was presented together with a to-be-ignored distractor. Both objects were given a task-irrelevant color that varied per trial. In a secondary task, a color had to be memorized, and that color could either match the color of the target, match the color of the distractor, or it did not match the color of any of the objects in the search task. The memory task was completed either after the search task (Experiment 1), or before it (Experiment 2). The results showed that in both experiments the memorized color biased oculomotor selection. Eye movements were more frequently drawn towards objects that matched the memorized color, irrespective of whether the memory task was completed after (Experiment 1) or before (Experiment 2) the search task. This bias was particularly prevalent in short-latency saccades. The results show that early oculomotor selection performance is not only affected by properties that are actively maintained in working memory but also by those previously memorized. Both working memory and feature priming can cause early biases in oculomotor selection.  相似文献

We tested whether the goal to attain normative superiority over other students, referred to as performance-approach goals, is particularly distractive for high-Working Memory Capacity (WMC) students—that is, those who are used to being high achievers. Indeed, WMC is positively related to high-order cognitive performance and academic success, a record of success that confers benefits on high-WMC as compared to low-WMC students. We tested whether such benefits may turn out to be a burden under performance-approach goal pursuit. Indeed, for high achievers, aiming to rise above others may represent an opportunity to reaffirm their positive status—a stake susceptible to trigger disruptive outcome concerns that interfere with task processing. Results revealed that with performance-approach goals—as compared to goals with no emphasis on social comparison—the higher the students’ WMC, the lower their performance at a complex arithmetic task (Experiment 1). Crucially, this pattern appeared to be driven by uncertainty regarding the chances to outclass others (Experiment 2). Moreover, an accessibility measure suggested the mediational role played by status-related concerns in the observed disruption of performance. We discuss why high-stake situations can paradoxically lead high-achievers to sub-optimally perform when high-order cognitive performance is at play.  相似文献

One of the consequences of extensive mindfulness practice is a reduction of anxiety and depression, but also a capacity to regulate negative emotions. In this study, we explored four key questions concerning mindfulness training: (1) What are the processes by which mindfulness regulates our emotions? (2) Can mindfulness be applied to social emotions? (3) Does mindfulness training affect emotionally driven behavior towards others? (4) Does mindfulness alter physiological reactivity? To address these questions, we tested, in two experiments, the ability of mindfulness meditators to regulate interpersonal emotions (Experiment 1) and interactive behaviors (Experiment 2) as compared to naïve controls. To better understand the mechanisms by which mindfulness regulates emotions, we asked participants to apply two strategies: a cognitive strategy (mentalizing, a form of reappraisal focused on the intentions of others) and an experiential strategy derived from mindfulness principles (mindful detachment). Both groups were able to regulate interpersonal emotions by means of cognitive (mentalizing) and experiential (mindful detachment) strategies. In Experiment 1, a simple effect of meditation, independent from the implementation of the strategies, resulted in reduced emotional and physiological reactivity, as well as in increased pleasantness for meditators when compared to controls, providing evidence of baseline regulation. In Experiment 2, one visible effect of the strategy was that meditators outperformed controls in the experiential (mindful detachment) but not in the cognitive (mentalize) strategy, showing stronger modulation of their interactive behavior (less punishments) and providing evidence of a strategic behavioral regulation. Based on these results, we suggest that mindfulness can influence interpersonal emotional reactions through an experiential mechanism, both at a baseline level and a strategic level, thereby altering the subjective and physiological perception of emotions, but also biasing interactive social behavior.  相似文献

Human faces automatically attract visual attention and this process appears to be guided by social group memberships. In two experiments, we examined how social groups guide selective attention toward in-group and out-group faces. Black and White participants detected a target letter among letter strings superimposed on faces (Experiment 1). White participants were less accurate on trials with racial out-group (Black) compared to in-group (White) distractor faces. Likewise, Black participants were less accurate on trials with racial out-group (White) compared to in-group (Black) distractor faces. However, this pattern of out-group bias was only evident under high perceptual load—when the task was visually difficult. To examine the malleability of this pattern of racial bias, a separate sample of participants were assigned to mixed-race minimal groups (Experiment 2). Participants assigned to groups were less accurate on trials with their minimal in-group members compared to minimal out-group distractor faces, regardless of race. Again, this pattern of out-group bias was only evident under high perceptual load. Taken together, these results suggest that social identity guides selective attention toward motivationally relevant social groups—shifting from out-group bias in the domain of race to in-group bias in the domain of minimal groups—when perceptual resources are scarce.  相似文献

Neural coding in the auditory system has been shown to obey the principle of efficient neural coding. The statistical properties of speech appear to be particularly well matched to the auditory neural code. However, only English has so far been analyzed from an efficient coding perspective. It thus remains unknown whether such an approach is able to capture differences between the sound patterns of different languages. Here, we use independent component analysis to derive information theoretically optimal, non-redundant codes (filter populations) for seven typologically distinct languages (Dutch, English, Japanese, Marathi, Polish, Spanish and Turkish) and relate the statistical properties of these filter populations to documented differences in the speech rhythms (Analysis 1) and consonant inventories (Analysis 2) of these languages. We show that consonant class membership plays a particularly important role in shaping the statistical structure of speech in different languages, suggesting that acoustic transience, a property that discriminates consonant classes from one another, is highly relevant for efficient coding.  相似文献

How can we enhance the understanding of abstract mathematical principles in elementary school? Different studies found out that nonsymbolic estimation could foster subsequent exact number processing and simple arithmetic. Taking the commutativity principle as a test case, we investigated if the approximate calculation of symbolic commutative quantities can also alter the access to procedural and conceptual knowledge of a more abstract arithmetic principle. Experiment 1 tested first graders who had not been instructed about commutativity in school yet. Approximate calculation with symbolic quantities positively influenced the use of commutativity-based shortcuts in formal arithmetic. We replicated this finding with older first graders (Experiment 2) and third graders (Experiment 3). Despite the positive effect of approximation on the spontaneous application of commutativity-based shortcuts in arithmetic problems, we found no comparable impact on the application of conceptual knowledge of the commutativity principle. Overall, our results show that the usage of a specific arithmetic principle can benefit from approximation. However, the findings also suggest that the correct use of certain procedures does not always imply conceptual understanding. Rather, the conceptual understanding of commutativity seems to lag behind procedural proficiency during elementary school.  相似文献

Kate Causey and Jonathan F Mosser discuss what can be learnt from the observed impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine immunisation systems.

In the final months of 2021, deaths due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) surpassed 5 million globally [1]. Available data suggest that even this staggering figure may be a substantial underestimate of the true toll of the pandemic [2]. Beyond mortality, it may take years to fully quantify the direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic such as disruptions in preventive care services. In an accompanying research study in PLOS Medicine, McQuaid and colleagues report on the uptake of routine childhood immunizations in 2020 in Scotland and England during major pandemic-related lockdowns [3]. This adds to a growing body of literature quantifying the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine health services and childhood immunization [4,5], which provides important opportunities to learn from early pandemic experiences as immunization systems face ongoing challenges.McQuaid and colleagues compared weekly or monthly data on vaccine uptake in Scotland and England from January to December of 2020 to the rates observed in 2019 to estimate the changes in uptake before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns in each country. The authors included 2 different preschool immunizations, each with multiple doses. They found significantly increased uptake within 4 weeks of eligibility during the lockdown and postlockdown periods in Scotland for all 5 vaccine dose combinations examined: During lockdown, percentage point increases ranged from 1.3% to 14.3%. In England, there were significant declines in uptake during the prelockdown, lockdown, and postlockdown periods for all 4 vaccine dose combinations examined. However, declines during lockdown were small, with percentage point decreases ranging from −0.5% to −2.1%. Due to the nature of the data available, the authors were unable to account for possible seasonal variation in vaccine delivery, control for important individual-level confounders or effect modifiers such as child sex and parental educational attainment, or directly compare outcomes across the 2 countries.These findings stand in contrast to the documented experience of many other countries, where available data suggest historic disruptions in routine childhood vaccination coverage, particularly during the first months of pandemic-related lockdowns [5,6]. Supply side limitations such as delayed shipments of vaccines and supplies [7], inadequate personal protective equipment [8], staff shortages [9], and delayed or canceled campaigns and introductions [9] threatened vaccine delivery. Furthermore, fear of exposure to COVID-19 at vaccination centers [10], misinformation about vaccine safety [8], and lockdown-related limitations on travel to facilities [9,10] reduced demand. In polls of country experts conducted by WHO, UNICEF, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance throughout the second quarter of 2020, 126 of 170 countries reported at least some disruption to routine immunization programs [10,11]. Global estimates suggest that millions more children missed doses of important vaccines than would have in the absence of the COVID-19 pandemic [5,6]. While many vaccine programs showed remarkable resilience in the second half of 2020, with rates of vaccination returning to or even exceeding prepandemic levels [5,6], disruptions to immunization services persisted into 2021 in many countries [12].As the authors discuss, it is critical to pinpoint the specific program policies and strategies that contributed to increased uptake in Scotland and only small declines in England and, more broadly, to the rapid recovery of vaccination rates observed in many other countries. McQuaid and colleagues cite work suggesting that increased flexibility in parental working patterns during lockdowns, providing mobile services or public transport to vaccine centers, and sending phone- and mail-based reminders are strategies that may have improved uptake of timely vaccination in Scotland during this period [13]. Similarly, immunization programs around the world have employed a broad range of strategies to maintain or increase vaccination during the pandemic. Leaders in Senegal, Paraguay, and Sri Lanka designed and conducted media campaigns to emphasize the importance of childhood immunization even during lockdown [8,14,15]. Although many programs delayed mass campaigns in the spring of 2020, multiple countries were able to implement campaigns by the summer of 2020 [8,1620]. In each of these examples, leaders responded quickly to meet the unique challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic in their communities.Increased data collection and tracking systems are essential for efficient and effective responses as delivery programs face challenges. When concern arose for pandemic-related disruptions to immunization services, public health decision-makers in Scotland and England responded by increasing the frequency and level of detail in reports of vaccine uptake and by making these data available for planning and research. The potential for robust data systems to inform real-time decision-making is not limited to high-income countries. For instance, the Nigerian National Health Management Information System released an extensive online dashboard shortly after the onset of the pandemic, documenting the impact of COVID-19 on dozens of indicators of health service uptake, including 16 related to immunization [21]. Vaccination data systems that track individual children and doses, such as the reminder system in Scotland, allow for highly targeted responses. Similarly, in Senegal, Ghana, and in Karachi, Pakistan, healthcare workers have relied on existing or newly implemented tracking systems to identify children who have missed doses and provide text message and/or phone call reminders [8,22,23]. Investing in robust routine data systems allows for rapid scale-up of data collection, targeted services to those who miss doses, and a more informed response when vaccine delivery challenges arise.Policy and program decision-makers must learn from the observed impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on health systems and vaccine delivery. The study by McQuaid and colleagues provides further evidence that vaccination programs in England and Scotland leveraged existing strengths and identified novel strategies to mitigate disruptions and deliver vaccines in the early stages of the pandemic. However, the challenges posed by the pandemic to routine immunization services continue. To mitigate the risk of outbreaks of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases, strategies are needed to maintain and increase coverage, while ensuring that children who missed vaccines during the pandemic are quickly caught up. The accompanying research study provides important insights into 2 countries where services were preserved—and even increased—in the early pandemic. To meet present and future challenges, we must learn from early pandemic successes such as those in Scotland and England, tailor solutions to improve vaccine uptake, and strengthen data systems to support improved decision-making.  相似文献

Multicellular eukaryotes can perform functions that exceed the possibilities of an individual cell. These functions emerge through interactions between differentiated cells that are precisely arranged in space. Bacteria also form multicellular collectives that consist of differentiated but genetically identical cells. How does the functionality of these collectives depend on the spatial arrangement of the differentiated bacteria? In a previous issue of PLOS Biology, van Gestel and colleagues reported an elegant example of how the spatial arrangement of differentiated cells gives rise to collective behavior in Bacillus subtilus colonies, further demonstrating the similarity of bacterial collectives to higher multicellular organisms.Introductory textbooks tend to depict bacteria as rather primitive and simple life forms: the billions of cells in a population are all supposedly performing the exact same processes, independent of each other. According to this perspective, the properties of the population are thus nothing more than the sum of the properties of the individual cells. A brief look at the recent literature shows that life at the micro scale is much more complex and far more interesting. Even though cells in a population share the same genetic material and are exposed to similar environmental signals, they are individuals: they can greatly differ from each other in their properties and behaviors [1,2].One source of such phenotypic variation is that individual cells experience different microenvironments and regulate their genes in response. However, and intriguingly, phenotypic differences can also arise in the absence of environmental variation [3]. The stochastic nature of biochemical reactions makes variation between individuals unavoidable: reaction rates in cells will fluctuate because of the typical small number of the molecules involved, leading to slight differences in the molecular composition between individual cells [4]. While cells cannot prevent fluctuations from occurring, the effect of these extracellular and intracellular perturbations on a cell’s phenotype can be controlled by changing the biochemical properties of molecules or the architecture of gene regulatory networks [4,5]. The degree of phenotypic variation could thus evolve in response to natural selection. This raises the question of whether the high degree of phenotypic variation observed in some traits could offer benefits to the bacteria [5].One potential benefit of phenotypic variation is bet hedging. Bet hedging refers to a situation in which a fraction of the cells express alternative programs, which typically reduce growth in the current conditions but at the same time allow for increased growth or survival when the environment abruptly changes [68]. Another potential benefit can arise through the division of labor: phenotypic variation can lead to the formation of interacting subpopulations that specialize in complementary tasks [9]. As a result, the population as a whole can perform existing functions more efficiently or attain new functionality [10]. Division of labor enables groups of bacteria to engage in two tasks that are incompatible with each other but that are both required to attain a certain biological function.One of the most famous examples of division of labor in bacteria is the specialization of multicellular cyanobacteria into photosynthesizing and nitrogen-fixing subpopulations [11]. Here, the driving force behind the division of labor is the biochemical incompatibility between photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, as the oxygen produced during photosynthesis permanently damages the enzymes involved in nitrogen fixation [12]. Other examples include the division of labor between two subpopulations of Salmonella Typhimurium (Tm) during infections [9] and the formation of multicellular fruiting bodies in Myxococcus xanthus [13]. Division of labor is not restricted to interactions between only two subpopulations; for example, the soil-dwelling bacteria Bacillus subtilis can differentiate into at least five different cell types [14]. Multiple types can simultaneously be present in Bacillus biofilms and colonies, each contributing different essential tasks [14,15].An important question is whether a successful division of labor requires the different subpopulations to coordinate their behavior and spatial arrangement. For some systems, it turns out that spatial coordination is not required. For example, the division of labor in clonal groups of Salmonella Tm does not require that the two cell types are spatially arranged in a particular way [9]. In other systems, spatial coordination between the different cell types seems to be beneficial. For example, differentiation into nitrogen-fixing and photosynthetic cells in multicellular cyanobacteria is spatially regulated in a way that facilitates sharing of nitrogen and carbon [16]. In general, when cell differentiation is combined with coordination of behavior between cells, this can allow for the development of complex, group-level behaviors that cannot easily be deduced from the behavior of individual cells [1720]. In these cases, a population can no longer be treated as an assembly of independent individuals but must be seen as a union that together shows collective behavior.The study by van Gestel et al. [21] in a previous issue of PLOS Biology offers an exciting perspective on how collective behavior can arise from processes operating at the level of single cells. Van Gestel and colleagues [21] analyzed how groups of B. subtilis cells migrate across solid surfaces in a process known as sliding motility. The authors found that migration requires both individuality—the expression of different phenotypes in clonal populations—and spatial coordination between cells. Migration depends critically on the presence of two cell types: surfactin-producing cells, which excrete a surfactant that reduce surface tension, and matrix-producing cells, which excrete extracellular polysaccharides and proteins that form a connective extracellular matrix (Fig 1B) [14]. These two cell types are not randomly distributed across the bacterial group but are rather spatially organized (Fig 1C). The matrix-producing cells form bundles of interconnected and highly aligned cells, which the authors refer to as “van Gogh” bundles. The buckling and resulting expansion depend critically on the presence of the two cell types and on their spatial arrangement.The ability to migrate is a collective behavior that can be linked to the biophysical properties of the multicellular van Gogh bundles. The growth of cells in these bundles causes them to buckle, which in turn drives colony migration (Fig 1D) [21]. This is a clear example of an emergent (group-level) phenotype: the buckling of the van Gogh bundles and the resulting colony motility cannot easily be deduced from properties of individual cells. Rather, to understand colony migration we have to understand the interactions between the two cells type as well as their spatial organization. Building on a rich body of work on the regulation of gene expression and cellular differentiation in Bacillus [14], van Gestel et al. [21] are able to show how these molecular mechanisms lead to the formation of specialized cell types that, through coordinated spatial arrangement, provide the group the ability to move (Fig 1). The study thus uniquely bridges the gap between molecular mechanisms and collective behavior in bacterial multicellularity.This study raises a number of intriguing questions. A first question pertains to the molecular mechanisms underlying the spatial coordination of the two cell types. Can the spatial organization be explained based on known mechanisms of the regulation of gene expression in this organism or does the formation of these patterns depend on hitherto uncharacterized gene regulation based on spatial gradients or cell–cell interaction? A second question is about the selective forces that lead to the evolution of collective migration of this organism. The authors raise the interesting hypothesis that van Gogh bundles evolved to allow for migration. Although this explanation is very plausible, it also raises the question of how selection acting on a property at the level of the group can lead to adaptation at the individual cell level. Possible mechanisms for such selective processes have been described within the framework of multilevel selection theory. However, there are still many questions regarding how, and to what extent, multilevel selection operates in the natural world [2224]. The system described by van Gestel and colleagues [21] offers exciting opportunities to address these questions using a highly studied and experimentally amenable model organism.Bacterial collectives (e.g., colonies or biofilms) have been likened to multicellular organisms partly because of the presence of cell differentiation and the importance of an extracellular matrix [25,26]. Higher multicellular organisms share these properties; however, they are more than simple lumps of interconnected, differentiated cells. Rather, the functioning of multicellular organisms critically depends on the precise spatial organization of these cells [27]. Even though spatial organization has been suggested before in B. subtilis biofilms [28], there was a gap in our understanding of how spatial organization of unicellular cells can lead to group-level function. The van Gogh bundles in the article by van Gestel et al. [21] provide direct evidence on how differentiated cells can spatially organize themselves to give rise to group-level behavior. China''s rural-urban dual society system is instituted by its unique hukou system. This system causes inequalities in social status between permanent urban and rural residents, and discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants is thus prevalent. A series of studies, based on system justification theory, sought to address the impact of the hukou system on the discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants. Study 1 showed that the justification of the hukou system could predict discrimination operationalized using a social distance measure. Study 2 found that priming of the proposed abolishment of the current hukou system led to reduced social distance. Study 3, using a recruiting scenario, further demonstrated that priming of the proposed abolishment of the system led to reduced discrimination in salary decision. Consistent with our predictions, discrimination against rural-to-urban migrants could be triggered by justifying the current hukou system, while priming of the abolishment of the system serves to decrease discrimination. The present research thereby sheds light on China''s reform of its hukou system to achieve social justice and equality from a psychological perspective.  相似文献

Anger is a common cause of strained negotiations. This research investigated the effects of experiencing anger (Experiment 1) and regulating anger (Experiment 2) on ultimatum bargaining. Experiment 1 showed that relative to a control condition, angered participants proposed less fair offers and rejected more offers when bargaining with the person who angered them. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1, and additionally showed that regulating anger via reappraisal and distraction both reduced anger. However, only reappraisal effectively reduced anger for the duration of the negotiation. Participants who reappraised proposed fairer offers than those in the distraction condition, but did not differ in offers accepted. This research may have implications for what emotion regulation strategy should be employed in economic bargaining. However, future research is required to determine the most effective timing and components of reappraisal for promoting beneficial outcomes in bargaining contexts.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate two aspects of sustained attention in intellectually gifted children: first, the differences to intellectually average children; second, the differences between receiving standard education and enrichment education. Study 1 compared sustained attention between 24 intellectually gifted and 26 intellectually average children. The results showed that intellectually gifted children had better performance than their average peers, not only for the whole task but also on all indices. Study 2 compared sustained attention between 24 intellectually gifted children who received standard education and 24 intellectually gifted children who received enrichment education. The results showed that intellectually gifted children who received enrichment education performed better than those who received standard education. These findings are consistent with previous work and provide support for the implementation of enrichment education for intellectually gifted children.  相似文献
