Samples of North AmericanPyrola asarifolia and its Asian vicariad,P. incarnata, were compared in morphology and leaf flavonol constituents. No qualitatively distinct attributes separate the plants from these two regions. In addition, a broad overlap exists in the ranges of the 11 morphological characteristics examined. Both Asian and North American plants exhibit some regional differentiation, but no simple clinal pattern is evident. Sepal width is the only morphological characteristic that exhibits a bimodal tendency in sample means. Asian plants have significantly narrower sepals compared with the North American samples. The chromatographic pattern of leaf flavonols in the Asian plants is distinct from the North American because of the reduced number of compounds present and in having one large, highly concentrated quercetin glycoside as the major constituent. The Asian vicariad is recognized asP. asarifolia Michaux subsp.incarnata (DC.) Haber & Takahashi, comb. nov. It is also considered to have a close affinity with the EurasianP. rotundifolia.  相似文献

Insects use various types of behaviour, chemical defences, mimetic, aposematic or cryptic appearances as anti-predatory strategies. Among insects, carabid beetles of the genus Brachinus are distasteful prey because they discharge an irritating "cloud" of quinones when threatened. These beetles live in aggregations and adopt warning (conspicuous pattern) colours and chemicals to create a template that is easily learnt by predators. Another carabid beetle, Anchomenus dorsalis, mimics the colours and cuticular profile of Brachinus and is usually found in Brachinus aggregations. In this paper we report results from laboratory observations on feeding choice of the following natural predators - Crocidura leucodon (Insectivora: Soricidae), Ocypus olens (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) and Podarcis sicula (Reptilia: Lacertidae) - on carabid beetle species. Comparing the number of attacks of predators towards aposematic and non-aposematic prey, there was a statistically significant preference towards non-aposematic prey.  相似文献

Pattern and process in the geographical ranges of freshwater fishes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
North American freshwater fishes were studied to determine whether they displayed the same relationships between log (geographical range size) and log (body size) and the same pattern of range shape as found among North American birds and mammals. The forces that produce these patterns were also investigated. The log (geographical range size) : log (body size) relationship was analysed for 121 North American freshwater fish species. Thirty‐two imperilled species were compared with 89 non‐imperilled species to determine if the overall relationship could result from differential extinction. Range geometries were analysed, within and among habitat guilds, to determine if general patterns could be detected. The log (geographical range size) : log (body size) pattern among freshwater fish species was triangular and qualitatively similar to that found for North American birds and mammals. The results suggest that below a minimum geographical range, the likelihood of extinction increases dramatically for freshwater fishes and that this minimum range size increases with body size. The pattern of fish species’ range shapes differs from that found for other North American vertebrate taxa because, on average, fish possess much smaller ranges than terrestrial species and most fish species’ geographical ranges extend further on a north–south axis than on an east–west axis. The log (geographical range size) : log (body size) pattern reveals that fish species’ geographical ranges are more constrained than those of terrestrial species. The triangular relationship may be caused by differential extinction of species with large bodies and small geographical ranges as well as higher speciation rates of small‐bodied fish. The restricted geographical ranges of freshwater fishes gives them much in common with terrestrial species on oceanic islands. Range shape patterns within habitat guilds reflect guild‐specific historical and current ecological forces. The overall pattern of range shapes emerges from the combination of ecologically different subunits.  相似文献

More than half of the diminutive North American catfish species known as madtoms (Noturus spp.) are considered imperiled due to range reductions from habitat fragmentation and degradation. In response, government agencies regularly conduct sampling that targets these cryptic fishes. Unfortunately, the effectiveness and biases associated with common sampling gears has rarely been quantified for non‐game fish, including madtoms. To improve sampling protocols for diverse madtom species, we: (a) quantified the detection probabilities and effort necessary to detect five species of madtom with relative certainty using complimentary sampling gears, and (b) described biases associated with size‐selectivity of the same gears when used to sample madtoms. Five madtom species that are native to Mississippi streams and have two distinct coloration patterns were selected: uniform pattern, Brown Madtom (Noturus phaeus) and Freckled Madtom (Noturus nocturnus); patterned, Piebald Madtom (Noturus gladiator), Least Madtom (Noturus hildebrandi), and Brindled Madtom (Noturus miurus). These species were captured using four standardized sampling gears (i.e., backpack electrofisher, seine, dipnet, and Gee‐style minnow trap) from 13 isolated stream reaches in Mississippi during baseflow conditions between August and November 2016. Each gear was randomly assigned to up to five transects at each site resulting in a maximum of 20 unique samples per stream reach. We estimated the detection probability of each species with each gear using presence–absence capture data. Cumulative detection probabilities were calculated for each species and gear combination to describe the number of samples necessary to achieve a detection probability of 0.95. Additionally, we pooled all capture data across sampling sites to compare madtom size distributions among gears. Electrofishing was generally the most efficient gear for detecting madtoms, but slightly overestimated fish size distributions. By seining, managers can expect to capture all species evaluated with a modest amount of effort; however, are likely to catch relatively small individuals. Seining was the most effective gear for only Piebald Madtom, a species petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act. To be relatively certain that Piebald Madtom are absent from a stream reach would require sampling ten 100 m transects by seining. In contrast, the same certainty would require more than twenty 100 m electrofishing transects. Minnow traps and dipnetting generally performed poorly and failed to detect some species at occupied sites. Biologists can now consider using each of these complimentary gears assessed when evaluating species status and population structure for diverse madtom species, while explicitly acknowledging the biases associated with each gear.  相似文献

This is the first report of North American bullfrogs, Lithobates catesbeianus (=Rana catesbeiana), invasion in Uruguay. This Anura was introduced for farming proposes in 1987, but at present most of the farms are closed. At one of these closed farms, located at Rincón de Pando, Canelones, we report the occurrence of a feral population of L. catesbeianus. This invasion point is at an early stage and restricted to one or two ponds. We also report the effects of L. catesbeianus invasion in the community structure. This includes species composition and species size structure. In this system bullfrog tadpoles constitute a very important proportion of the present biomass. Bullfrog tadpoles appear to be displacing native amphibians and having some type of positive interaction with fishes. At the invaded system we found more fish species and larger sizes of the shared fish species. We analyze the involved risks of this invasion, the ecological impact by predation, the competition and habitat modification, and the potential of bullfrog to act as pathogens vector. We also recommend taking measures in order to avoid the expansion of this population. There is also the need of studies to search for new invasion points in Uruguay, especially where bullfrog farms were located.  相似文献

Aggressive mimicry has been proposed for several unrelated fish species both in freshwater and marine environments. I describe herein a few additional examples, including the first ones from brackish water. In one well documented case, juvenile snooks, Centropomus mexicanus (Centropomidae) join bottom-foraging groups of the superficially similar mojarras, Eucinostomus melanopterus (Gerreidae) and prey on small fishes and crustaceans under such disguise. Two other snook species and two species of groupers (Serranidae), are here suggested as additional instances of aggressive mimicry. Furthermore, I review published examples of aggressive mimicry in fishes and indicate trends in the relationships between the mimics, their feeding tactics, and their putative models. Three large families, Serranidae, Cichlidae, and Blenniidae display most of the examples of aggressive mimicry, serranids being largely represented by the genus Hypoplectrus and blenniids by the tribe Nemophini only. Three major trends are here indicated for aggressive mimics: (1) fish species that feed on prey smaller than themselves tend to mimic and join fish species harmless to their prospective prey; (2) fish species that feed on prey larger than themselves tend to mimic mostly beneficial fish species (cleaners) or, less frequently, join species harmless to their prospective prey; (3) fish species that feed on prey about their own size tend to mimic their prospective prey species, the perfect wolf in a sheep's clothes disguise type. The latter deceit is recorded mostly for scale and fin-feeding freshwater fishes.  相似文献

Synopsis Direct observation and the analysis of stomach contents indicate that custodial male Cortez damselfish, Stegastes rectifraenum, regularly eat some of the eggs they fertilize and guard. The pattern of forced starvation and brood cycling by custodial males that is seen in sticklebacks and other fishes for which filial cannibalism is known in the field does not exist for this species. These results indicate that filial cannibalism is likely to be more common among fishes than previously thought, because this behavior is not restricted to species that brood cycle.  相似文献

Rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) represent a speciose and ecologically important group of marine fishes found in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, with approximately 105 species found world-wide (Hyde and Vetter 2007). They also comprise the majority of species found in the Pacific groundfish fishery. Thorough species assessments in terms of harvest management have been done for only 11 species, and of the 11 species, seven have been declared overfished. Having accurate genetic information is critical to the continuing effort at stock assessments, but sampling is often difficult in marine fishes. Genetic techniques are a powerful tool in the effort to better characterize the ecology of these species. These techniques can be used to investigate multiple biological traits, including species identity, intra- and interspecific genetic variation, migration patterns, and effective population size. There are important caveats and limitations when applying specific genetic methods, especially in marine species that lack discrete spawning aggregates. Nevertheless, it is clear from a review of recent literature that genetic tools have already provided very specific insight regarding rockfish population dynamics. The results are diverse and difficult to synthesize; however, existing studies show five primary patterns to population groupings in rockfishes: no obvious pattern of structure, structure consistent with isolation by distance, structure evident but inconsistent with isolation by distance, structure that correlates to oceanographic features, and potential genetic introgression. Clearly the study of rockfish population genetics is poised for rapid expansion that will unquestionably aid management of the rockfish fisheries and general understanding of rockfish evolutionary systematics. A principle challenge at this point is to derive generalized inferences from such a diverse array of study results across the vast North Pacific range of Sebastes. This review summarizes existing genetic studies in Sebastes spp. in the North Pacific to assist in identifying knowledge gaps for this ecologically important and diverse group.  相似文献

Synopsis Several North American minnow species are known to engage in the action pattern parallel swimming, an activity that allows males competing for nests or nesting sites an opportunity to assess each other. These agonistic displays have been hypothesized to occur only between males of similar size. We provide evidence to support this hypothesis for two minnow species and a sucker species. Competition is strong both intra- and interspecifically for nest sites and we document the occurrence of interspecific parallel swims between three species.  相似文献

Identifying the genes responsible for adaptation has been an elusive goal in evolutionary biology. Rock pocket mice (Chaetodipus intermedius) provide a useful system for studying the genetics of adaptation: most C. intermedius are light-coloured and live on light-coloured rocks, but in several different geographical regions, C. intermedius are melanic and live on dark-coloured basalt lava, presumably as an adaptation for crypsis. Previous work demonstrated that mutations at the melanocortin-1 receptor gene (Mc1r) are responsible for the dark/light difference in mice from one population in Arizona. Here, we investigate whether melanism has evolved independently in populations of dark C. intermedius from New Mexico, and whether the same or different genes underlie the dark phenotype in mice from these populations compared with the dark mice from Arizona. Seventy-six mice were collected from pairs of dark and light localities representing four different lava flows and adjacent light-coloured rocks; lava flows were separated by 70-750 km. Spectrophotometric analysis of mouse pelage and of rock samples revealed a strong positive association between coat colour and substrate colour. No significant differences were observed in the colour of rocks among the four lava flows, suggesting that mice in these separate populations have experienced similar selection for crypsis. Despite this similarity in environment, melanic mice from the three New Mexico populations were slightly, but significantly, darker than melanic mice from Arizona. The entire Mc1r gene was sequenced in all mice. The previously identified mutations responsible for the light/dark difference in mice from Arizona were absent in all melanic mice from three different populations in New Mexico. Five new Mc1r polymorphisms were observed among mice from New Mexico, but none showed any association with coat colour. These results indicate that adaptive melanism has arisen at least twice in C. intermedius and that these similar phenotypic changes have a different genetic basis.  相似文献

Species in the genus Castanea are widely distributed in the deciduous forests of the Northern Hemisphere from Asia to Europe and North America. They show floristic similarity but differences in chestnut blight resistance especially among eastern Asian and eastern North American species. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted in this study using sequences of three chloroplast noncoding trnT-L-F regions. The trnT-L region was found to be the most variable and informative region. The highest proportion of parsimony informative sites, more and larger indels, and higher pairwise distances between taxa were obtained at trnT-L than at the other two regions. The high A+T values (74.5%) in the Castanea trnT-L region may explain the high proportion of transversions found in this region where as comparatively lower A+T values were found in the trnL intron (68.35%) and trnL-F spacer (70.07%) with relatively balanced numbers of transitions and transversions. The genus Castanea is supported as a monophyletic clade, while the section Eucastanon is paraphyletic. C. crenata is the most basal clade and sister to the remainder of the genus. The three Chinese species of Castanea are supported as a single monophyletic clade, whose sister group contains the North American and European species. There is consistent but weak support for a sister–group relationship between the North American species and European species.  相似文献

Many taxonomic and ecological assemblages of species exhibit a right-skewed body size-frequency distribution when characterized at a regional scale. Although this distribution has been frequently described, factors influencing geographic variation in the distribution are not well understood, nor are mechanisms responsible for distribution shape. In this study, variation in the species body size-frequency distributions of 344 regional communities of North American freshwater fishes is examined in relation to latitude, species richness, and taxonomic composition. Although the distribution of all species of North American fishes is right-skewed, a negative correlation exists between latitude and regional community size distribution skewness, with size distributions becoming left-skewed at high latitudes. This relationship is not an artifact of the confounding relationship between latitude and species richness in North American fishes. The negative correlation between latitude and regional community size distribution skewness is partially due to the geographic distribution of families of fishes and apparently enhanced by a nonrandom geographic distribution of species within families. These results are discussed in the context of previous explanations of factors responsible for the generation of species size-frequency distributions related to the fractal nature of the environment, energetics, and evolutionary patterns of body size in North American fishes.  相似文献

Carex section Acrocystis currently includes 27 taxa in North America. Recent phylogenetic studies have suggested that the North American and some but not all of the Eurasian species form a clade. Relationships and biogeographic patterns among species in this core-Acrocystis group are explored here using nuclear ribosomal (nrDNA) internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and nrDNA external transcribed spacer region (ETS) sequence data. While maximum parsimony analysis of the ITS and ETS data provides only a moderately resolved branching structure for species relationships within the core-Acrocystis clade, maximum likelihood analysis provides a more resolved hypothesis of relationships in the section. The core-Acrocystis clade consists of a grade of Eurasian and primarily western North American species, with a well-supported clade of only eastern North American species nested within this grade. ITS and ETS types do not coalesce within many species or species complexes. Possible explanations for the non-coalescent nature of ITS and ETS copies in Acrocystis are explored, including lineage sorting, hybridization, and cryptic species.  相似文献

The population genetic structure of an invasive species in Spain, the American mink (Mustela vison), was investigated using microsatellite DNA markers. This semi-aquatic carnivore, originating from North America, was imported into Europe for fur farming since the beginning of the 20th century. Due to massive escapes, farm damages, deliberate releases and/or accidents, feral mink populations were established in the aquatic ecosystems of many European countries, including Spain. We genotyped 155 American mink originating from the Spanish regions Basque Country, Catalonia, Castilla-Leon, Aragon, Valencia and Galicia using 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci to highlight population genetic structure, distribution and dispersal. M. vison populations in Spain appear differentiated and not yet connected by gene flow. Bayesian clustering analyses and spatial analyses of molecular variance detected four inferred clusters, overall coinciding with the sampled geographical localities. Preliminary testing shows moderate to large estimated effective population sizes. Molecular analyses result useful to provide baseline data for further research on the evolution of invasive mink populations, as well as support local management strategies and indirectly benefit the conservation of threatened species in Spain, such as the endangered European mink (Mustela lutreola), and the polecat (Mustela putorius), which share the habitat with the American mink. Nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS and ETS) sequences from 39 native Californian (USA) Allium species and congeners were combined with 154 ITS sequences available on GenBank to develop a global Allium phylogeny with the simultaneous goals of investigating the evolutionary history (monophyly) of Allium in the Californian center of diversity and exploring patterns of adaptation to serpentine soils. Phylogenies constructed with ITS alone or ITS in combination with ETS provided sufficient resolution for investigating evolutionary relationships among species. The ITS region alone was sufficient to resolve the deeper relationships in North American species. Addition of a second marker (ETS) further supports the phylogenetic placements of the North American species and adds resolution within subgenus Amerallium, a clade containing many Californian endemics. Within the global phylogeny, the native North American species were found to be monophyletic, with the exception of Allium tricoccum and Allium schoenoprasum. All native Californian species included in the analysis fell into a monophyletic subgenus Amerallium section Lophioprason, although endemic Californian species were not monophyletic due to the inclusion of species with ranges extending beyond the California Floristic Province. The molecular phylogeny strongly supports previous morphology-based taxonomic groupings. Based on our results, serpentine adaptation appears to have occurred multiple times within section Lophioprason, while the ancestor of the Californian center of diversity may not have been serpentine-adapted.  相似文献

This contribution provides an insight into Atheriniformes systematics based on four mitochondrial regions: 12S rRNA, cytb, COI and control region (2794bp in total). In the Atherinopsoidei (New World silversides), comparisons among five species of Odontesthes, O. argentinensis, O. bonariensis, O. smitti, O. hatcheri and O. incisa revealed a putative marine-freshwater pairing pattern of Odontesthes species, possibly driven by sea level fluctuations of South American waters. This study represents the first data on molecular phylogeny of Odontesthes species that can be of usefulness to biodiversity conservation policies. In the Atherinoidei (Old World silversides), Atherina boyeri was corroborated as a species complex constituted by a marine form, a marine with dark spots form and a brackish form. Concretely, Odontesthes and Atherina may represent geographically replicated models to study genetic adaptation and speciation of marine species to brackish and freshwater habitats. In addition, phylogenetic analyses supported Odontesthes and Atherina as monophyletic taxa and their separation into two differentiated suborders Atherinopsoidei and Atherinoidei, respectively.  相似文献

Biological invasions offer excellent systems to study the evolutionary processes involved in introductions of species to new ranges. Molecular markers can reveal invasion histories and the effects of introductions on amounts and structuring of genetic variation. We used five polymorphic microsatellite loci to elucidate genetic diversity and population structure between native range and introduced range populations of a prominent North American rangeland weed, Centaurea diffusa (Asteraceae). We found that the total number of alleles and the number of private alleles was slightly higher in the native Eurasian range, and that allelic richness did not differ between the ranges, indicating overall levels of diversity were similar in Eurasia and North America. It therefore seems unlikely that this invasion has been affected by genetic bottlenecks or founder effects. Indeed, results of assignment tests suggest that multiple introductions have contributed to North America’s C. diffusa invasion. Additionally, assignment tests show that both Eurasian and North American sites had a strong pattern of mixed genetic ancestry. This mixed assignment corresponded to a lack of geographic population structure among Eurasian samples. The lack of population structure in the native range conflicts with general expectations and findings to date for invasion genetics, and cautions that even species’ native ranges may show signs of recent ecological upheaval. Despite the mixed assignments, North American samples showed strong population structure, suggesting that the invasion has been characterized by long-range dispersal of genetically distinct propagules across the introduced range.  相似文献

Satureja s.l. (Lamiaceae) is a large complex (ca. 225 spp.) that is variably treated as comprising from one to as many as 17 genera. The North American representatives are usually assigned toCalamintha, Clinopodium, Micromeria, Piloblephis, orSatureja. A recent chloroplast DNA restriction site analysis indicates that inclusion ofSatureja s.str.,Micromeria, andPiloblephis in the group renders it non-monophyletic. After exclusion of these three genera, a study of morphological variation in the remainder of the complex suggests that it is best treated as three genera, two of which do not occur in North America (Cyclotrichium and “Obtegomeria” [Doroszenko, ined., to be validated else-where]). The third comprises ca. 100 species, 11 of them native to North America north of Mexico. WithSatureja s.str. excluded, the name with priority for the latter genus isClinopodium. The indigenous North American species and their more frequently used synonyms are tabulated. A new combination,Clinopodium chandleri, is made.  相似文献

Egg crypsis and clutch survival in three species of blackbirds (Icteridae)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
For most open-nesting passerine birds, the primary function of egg pigmentation is crypsis. Interspecific variation for egg coloration is quite high, even among species that nest in the same locale. This variation might be maintained by selection to blend into species-specific nest cups, which vary in pattern because they are constructed from different materials. To test this hypothesis we photographed 30 clutches of Brewer's blackbirds ( Euphagus cyanocephalus ), 26 clutches of red-winged blackbirds ( Agelaius phoeniceus ), and 24 clutches of yellow-headed blackbirds ( Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus ), and quantified crypsis in terms of pattern (PD crypsis), brightness (MB crypsis) and brightness disparity (BD crypsis). The species were equally cryptic in terms of pattern crypsis, but differed significantly ( P < 0.01) in MB and BD crypsis. Intraspecific variation in pattern crypsis was surprisingly high. Mean clutch pattern disparity was highly correlated with mean background pattern disparity ( r = 0.999); this suggests selection for disparity matching, rather than for crypsis. We also monitored 25 clutches (7 Brewer's, 9 red-winged, and 9 yellow-headed blackbirds) for a 9-day period to determine if survival was related to crypsis. For Brewer's and yellow-headed blackbirds, successful nests were no more cryptic than failed nests. For red-winged blackbirds, there was a tendency ( P = 0.1) for less cryptic clutches to have higher survival; in addition, successful red-winged blackbird clutches had significantly ( P < 0.05) higher egg pattern disparity and background pattern disparity. Red-winged blackbird clutches are not concealed by overhanging vegetation, and high pattern disparity may enable them to blend into a large-scale heterogeneous background.  相似文献

Two new species, Hypancistrus phantasma and Hypancistrus margaritatus, are described based on material from the Rio Negro drainage. Both species are distinguished from congeners by unique color patterns. Hypancistrus phantasma is described from the Rio Uaupes and differs from congeners by having a tan body with small dark spots (vs. dark with light spots or with saddles or stripes). Hypancistrus margaritatus is described from the Takutu River and differs from congeners by having densely-packed light spots on a dark brown background, with spots about the size of the nasal aperture (vs. sparse light spots either smaller or larger than the nasal aperture, or brown to black spots, saddles, or stripes).  相似文献
