Roland L. Weinsier, M.D., Dr.P.H., devoted himself to the fields of nutrition and obesity for more than 35 years. He contributed outstanding work related to the treatment of obesity through dietary and lifestyle change; metabolic/energetic influences on obesity, weight loss, and weight regain; body composition changes accompanying weight loss and regain; the health benefits and risks of weight loss; nutrition education for physicians; and nutrition support of sick patients. He served on the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) National Task Force on Prevention and Treatment of Obesity, as Chair of the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Department of Nutrition Sciences, and as Founder and Director of its NIDDK‐funded Clinical Nutrition Research Center. He was a long‐time and active member of NAASO, serving in the roles of Councilor, Publications Committee Chair, Continuing Medical Education Course Director, Public Relations Committee Chair, and Membership Committee Co‐Chair, to name just a few. He was well respected as a staunch defender of NAASO's scientific integrity in these roles. Sadly, Roland Weinsier died on November 27, 2002. He will be missed and remembered by many as a revered and beloved teacher, mentor, healer, and scholar.  相似文献

Summary The effects of nitrogen and phosphorus on seed yield and seed nutrient content inPisum sativum L. cv Sprite were studied. In the first experiment (spring-sown) seed yield was increased by 55% due to the combined effect of high nitrogen and phosphorus, although in subsequent experiments (during the summer) nitrogen had no effect on seed yield, and a response to phosphorus was obtained in only one of two experiments. In all experiments, increased plant nitrogen and phosphorus supply resulted in increased concentration of the respective element in the seed.  相似文献

目的:探讨经胃镜鼻空肠置管肠内营养与肠外营养对重症胰腺炎患者血糖及相关指标的影响。方法:将32例重症胰腺炎患者随机分为早期肠内营养组(EEN,18例)和肠外营养组(PN,14例)。详细记录治疗期间的血糖波动,第4d、10d营养指标和淀粉酶等变化,并观察临床恢复情况。结果:早期肠内营养组血糖水平波动较肠外营养组平稳(P<0.01)。入院第4天EEN组患者的各项营养指标和淀粉酶指标恢复明显高于PN组患者(P<0.01)。并发症发生率EEN组少于PN组,差异有显著性(P<0.01)。结论:经胃镜鼻空肠置管早期肠内营养对重症胰腺炎患者营养支持的较好方法,方便血糖调控,同时可促进机体康复,减少并发症的发生。  相似文献

Studies in animals and humans have corroborated that zinc (Zn) metabolism is altered in obesity. The present work intends to evaluate the Zn nutritional status in obese children and adolescents by the determination of some biochemical parameters and analyses of the diets. The investigation was carried out in a group of obese children and adolescents (n=23) and compared to a control group (n=21), both between 7 and 14 yr of age. A software analyzed diet information from 3-d food records. Body composition was evaluated by body mass index, bioelectrical impedance, and skinfold measurements. Zinc nutritional status was evaluated by Zn determination in plasma, erythrocyte, and 24-h urine, by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (γ=213.9 nm). Diets consumed by both groups had marginal concentrations of zinc. Zinc concentrations in plasma and erythrocytes were significantly lower in the obese group. Urinary zinc excretion was significantly higher in the same group. The results allowed one to conclude that zinc nutritional status in obese individuals is altered.  相似文献

The effect of different rates and methods of fertilizer nitrogen application and potassium nutrition on the root nodule formation of faba bean plants var. Nadwiślański and on their nitrogenase activity was studied. It was found that fertilizer N depressed the nodule formation and nitrogenase activity, but inhibitory effect of N was smaller when it was supplied to the leaves instead to the soil. Plants growing at higher K level were in a position allowing on better development of nodules and consequently higher N2- fixation.  相似文献

Summary Release of inorganic N and P in the organic soils of three small quaking fens in The Netherlands was studied by means of in situ incubation of the peat soil in plastic bottles. One of the fens had higher biomass production and lower species richness than the other two. The former fen is located in an area with downward groundwater percolation, whereas the latter fens are situated in an area of upward seepage of groundwater rich in calcium and bicarbonate.Mineralization of N proved to be slow in the low-productive fens, and 6 times faster in the highly productive fen. In the latter fen the amount of N mineralized during a certain period exceeded by far the amount accumulated in that period in the above-ground parts of the vegetation.The release of inorganic P was extremely slow in the two low-productive fens and rapid in the highly productive fen. The release rates were not related to the total P content of the soils. The slow P release in the low-productive fens may be due to the continuous inflow of groundwater rich in Ca, Al and Fe compounds.It can be concluded that the soil is a potentially large source of inorganic N and P in quaking fens. The importance of the soil versus other N and P sources is greater in nutrient-rich fens.  相似文献

The authors analyzed serum selenium levels of 95 children and adolescents with intestinal dysfunction and/or neurological disabilities [age range: 7 months–20 years; mean ± standard deviation (SD): 8.0 ± 5.3 years] who received parenteral nutrition (PN) and/or enteral nutrition (EN) with either reduced or no selenium doses for more than 3 months. Twenty-eight patients (29%) showed serum selenium levels below 4.0 μg/dL. Five patients whose serum selenium levels were below 2 μg/dL presented various clinical manifestations, including hair browning (n = 5), macrocythemia (n = 4), nail whitening (n = 3) and cardiac dysfunction (n = 1). None of these 5 patients were nourished through ordinary diets. Three of these patients were nourished through selenium-free enteral nutritional products, 1 through selenium-deficient PN and 1 through PN and a formula with reduced selenium. After selenium supplement therapy for 1 year, all 5 patients exhibited improvement in their serum selenium levels and clinical features of selenium deficiency. It is important to be cautious about secondary selenium deficiency in children and adolescents nourished only through EN/PN without an adequate dose of selenium.  相似文献

The effect of composition of the medium and pH on the growth of Pediastrum duplex Meyen and Dictyosphaerium pulchellum Wood was studied. Both species showed preference to alkaline conditions. The ammonium nitrate grown colonies of D. pulchellum lacked mucilage and showed a more compact form, resembling D. pulchellum var. minitum Deflandre. From this it appears that D. pulchellum var. minitum is a nutritional variant of the species and not a stable variety.  相似文献

To estimate the contribution of coprophagy to protein intake, we observed the behavior, particularly that associated with coprophagy, in adult and young captive nutrias (experiment 1), and analyzed chemical composition and amino acid composition, including diaminopimeric acid (DAP), an indication of bacterial-deprived protein, of soft feces, entire hard feces, and the black part and green part of hard feces (experiment 2). Nutrias practiced coprophagy 48 times per 24 h in adults, and 28 times in young animals, which not only had a 24-h rhythm but also had 1-h or 2-h short-term rhythms. Nutrias ingested food and drank water vigorously after sunset, following which they practiced coprophagy from midnight to morning, before lying down for much of the day. When coprophagy was prevented we sampled soft feces, produced from midnight to noon, which had high (P < 0.05) concentration of crude protein (CP), DAP on a dry matter (DM) basis and 13 amino acids on a 16 g N basis than hard feces, and had a low (P < 0.05) content of acid detergent fiber (ADF). CP was greater in the black part than the green part of hard feces (P < 0.05) although ADF was less (P < 0.05). The chemical composition of the black part of hard feces was not significantly different from that of soft feces. The dry weight of soft feces excreted in experiment 1 was 34.5 g and 9.7 g DM per 24 h in adult and young animals, respectively. Using this value, the contribution of soft feces to CP intake in adult nutrias was estimated as 16%, superior to that obtained in rabbits for a diet with similar ADF concentration. To Met and Lys intake the contribution of soft feces was 26% and 19%, respectively in adult animals. In plants which have acclimatized to limiting supplies of nitrogen (steady-state nutrition), leaf expansion (numbers and sizes of leaves and cells) is under tight control. Over a wide range of nitrogen supplies, the control of leaf growth is associated with a narrow band of photosynthetic rate per leaf area (measured at the growth climate) and, at limiting supplies, a carbon uptake which is in excess of immediate carbon usage in structural growth.For every increment of nitrogen absorbed, root extension is greater at limited nitrate supply, but Vmax values (per root dry weight) for nitrate absorption are typically less. However, the capacity of the whole root system for nitrate uptake at limited supply is sufficient to allow for maximum growth, should nitrate supply be increased.It is concluded that a better understanding at the cellular level of the mechanisms which result in a greater inhibition of the expansion of single leaves than of root extension would contribute to an understanding of differences in carbon sink strength among plant organs. This may be a crucial step towards a more physiologically-based appreciation of plant dry matter distribution among organs in plants experiencing different nitrogen supplies.  相似文献

Photosynthetic CO2 assimilation, photorespiration and levels of glycollate oxidase and ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase were measured in barley, wheat and maize plants grown on media containing nitrate or ammonium or in plants transferred from nitrate to ammonium. The CO2 compensation point and photorespiratory CO2 release were not altered by the nitrogen growth regime nor by transfer from nitrate to ammonium. In barley and wheat plants grown on ammonium the levels of glycollate oxidase and RuBP carboxylase per unit leaf area were higher than in nitrate grown material. These differences were not evident when the results were expressed on a protein or chlorophyll basis. The ratio of glycollate oxidase activity to RuBP carboxylase activity was not altered by the nitrogen regime.  相似文献

Iron availability to plants is often limited when soil pH is 7 or higher. In C rich, but Fe limiting environments, microorganisms may produce organic chelators that complex Fe and increase its availability to plants. Seedlings of soybean (Glycine max L.) and oat (Avena sativa L.) plants, with Fe-efficient or inefficient uptake mechanisms, were grown in an Fe free nutrient solution at pH 7.5. Experiments (using a complete factorial design) were conducted in which these seedlings were transferred to a fresh nutrient solution and treated with Fe sources (FeCl3, FeEDDHA, and Fe complexed with chelators produced by compost microorganisms (CCMs) after their enrichment in an Fe free, glucose medium), Fe concentrations (0 and 6.7 M) and antibiotic (0 and 100 mg streptomycin L-1). Dry weight of soybean plants and Fe uptake were significantly (P 0.05) higher when Fe was supplied as 59FeCCM than as59 FeCl3 and similar to when Fe was supplied as59 FeEDDHA. Dry weight of the Fe-inefficient Tam 0-312 oat cultivar was also significantly higher when Fe was supplied as FeCCM. Fe uptake by oat, when supplied as 59FeCCM, was twice that for59 FeEDDHA and 59FeCl3. Chlorophyll concentration in plants supplied with FeCCM and FeEDDHA was significantly greater (P 0.05) than in minus Fe control plants and in FeCl3 supplied plants. Activities of catalase and peroxidase, measured as indicators of Fe nutrition in soybean and oats, were generally increased when Fe was supplied with FeCCM as compared to the other Fe sources. The experimental conditions in which the CCMs were produced are similar to those in soil after amendment with manures or other readily available organic materials. These CCMs can bind with Fe, even under slightly alkaline conditions, and effectively improve Fe nutrition of soybean and oat.  相似文献

Summary Twenty-five slow-growing strains of cowpea rhizobia were examined for growth and nutritional characteristics. Growth and nutritional data of these isolates were surprisingly homogeneous given their proposed genetic diversity. Most strains tested were capable of anaerobic growth in the presence of nitrate and all were found capable of autotrophic growth in a defined atmosphere of CO2 and H2 with oxygen or nitrate as terminal electron acceptors. These isolates grew heterotrophically with various carbohydrates and organic acids. Nitrogen utilization was consistent with that of other slow-growing rhizobia. Medium composition strongly affected the final pH of the culture. Cowpea rhizobia generally did not require vitamins; those requiring vitamins exhibited good growth when biotin was supplemented to the medium.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of nutrition and exercise interventions within cognitive/behavioral and public health formats on weight and blood lipid profiles in obese children. Compliance was also examined as well as the relationship of the compliance measures with clinical outcome variables. Three conditions were compared over 16 sessions: nutrition and eating-habit change followed by exercise (NE), exercise followed by nutrition and eating-habit change (EN), and an information control (INFO). NE and EN were presented in a cognitive/ behavioral framework which focused on the development of self-regulation whereas the INFO condition received the same material in a public health/educational model. NE and EN participants evidenced modest, yet significant, reductions in weight and blood lipids, and the impact of these two interventions endured at a five-year follow-up. In contrast, INFO participants displayed stable weight and blood lipids during the course of the program, and most remained morbidly obese at follow-up. Improved nutrition, increased physical activity and fitness were significantly correlated with weight and lipid reductions.  相似文献

Levels of Mg2+, Ca2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ were determined in roots and shoots of sugar beet seedlings (Beta vulgaris L. cv. Monohill) cultured for 5 weeks in a complete nutrient solution to which either Cd2+ (0, 5 or 50 μM), EDTA (0, 10 or 100 μM) or a combination of both was added. The plants subjected to the various treatments showed a variety of deficiency symptoms. Leaves of the Cd2+-treated plants became thin and chlorotic (Mg- and Fe-deficiency symptoms). The plants showed reduced growth and developed only a few brownish roots with short laterals (Ca-deficiency symptoms). EDTA treatment resulted in green, stunted, hard leaves and reduced growth (Ca-deficiency symptoms). The deficiency symptoms observed correspond well with the observed uptake rates and distributions of Mg2+, Ca2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+. Increases in either Cd2+, EDTA or a combination of both in the growth medium, were correlated with increasing Mg2+ levels in the roots and with decreasing Mg2+ levels in the shoots. Cd2+ alone or in combination with EDTA had little influence on Ca2+ levels in the shoots but decreased Ca2+ levels in the roots. Thus, Cd2+ affects Mg2+ and Ca2+ transport in opposite ways: Mg2+ transport to the shoots is inhibited while that of Ca2+ is facilitated. Treatment with EDTA alone did not affect Ca2+ concentrations in either the shoots or the roots. Treatment with Cd2+ lowered Fe2+ concentrations in both roots and shoots.  相似文献

目的:研究原发性肝癌患者术后两种营养支持的疗效及对免疫功能的影响。方法:病例选自2010年10月至2012年11月在我院就诊治疗的90例经诊断为原发性肝癌并进行肝部分切除的患者,随机分为EN组和PN组,每组各45例,分别进行肠内和肠外营养支持治疗,观察术前及术后患者的营养状况、住院时间、肠道功能恢复时间、并发症情况及免疫功能的变化,经统计学处理,探讨两种不同营养支持疗法的临床疗效及对免疫功能的影响。结果:相对于PN组,EN组患者术后营养明显改善,胃肠道功能恢复相对较快,免疫功能明显提高,术后并发症明显减少,且P0.05。差异具有统计学意义。结论:早期EN比PN更能改善肝癌病人术后肠道功能及营养状况,降低术后并发症,提高患者的免疫功能,有利于患者术后恢复。  相似文献

目的探讨早期肠内营养(EN)支持治疗对炎症性肠病(IBD)患者肠黏膜屏障功能及炎症反应的影响。方法将80例IBD患者按营养支持治疗途径分为EN组(48例)和肠外营养(PN)组(32例),在常规治疗的基础上分别给予早期EN、PN支持治疗。比较治疗前后2组患者营养学相关指标[白蛋白(ALB)、前白蛋白(PA)、转铁蛋白(TF)]、肠黏膜屏障功能指标(内毒素、D-乳酸)及炎症相关指标[C-反应蛋白(CRP)、降钙素原(PCT)、粪便钙卫蛋白(FCP)]水平。结果治疗前,2组患者各观察指标水平差异无统计学意义(P0.05);治疗后,与治疗前相比,2组患者血清ALB、PA及TF水平均显著升高(P0.05),血清内毒素、D-乳酸、CRP、PCT及FCP水平均显著降低(P0.05);与PN组患者治疗后相比,EN组治疗后血清PA水平显著升高(P0.05),血清内毒素、D-乳酸、CRP、PCT及FCP水平均显著降低(P0.05)。治疗后2组患者的血清ALB及TF水平之间差异无统计学意义(P0.05)。结论在常规治疗的基础上,早期EN支持治疗对IBD患者肠黏膜屏障功能的改善及炎症缓解作用优于PN支持治疗。  相似文献
