The pretarsus of Phidippus audax (Hentz) consists of two claws flexibly articulated to a central claw lever which is flanked on either side by a curved plate of tenent setae. The claw apparatus allows for retraction of the claws by means of a dorsal cuticular cable of the pretarsal levator, while extension involves the pull of the pretarsal depressor on a ventral cable attached to the claw lever. A series of slit sensilla are strategically situated on either side of this lever. The anterior and posterior claws of the pretarsus differ in the number and spacing of their constituent teeth. The claw tufts are composed of specialized setae which account for the mechanical traction of the foot-pads. Whorled and filamentous setae of the distal tarsus are associated with the pretarsus. Comparable structures are found on other salticids.  相似文献

The paired thoracic chelipeds or claws of adult snapping shrimp, Alpheus heterochelis, are bilaterally asymmetric, consisting of an enlarged and elaborate, sound-producing major (snapper) claw and a much smaller minor (pincer) claw. These paired claws vary in the composition of their external sensilla. Both possess long serrulate and simple short setae but the snapper also have plumose setae and long serrulate setae on the plunger. The pincers differ in having short serrulate setae and, in males alone, a prominent fringe of plumoserrate setae. During regeneration of each claw type, these setal structures are gradually added over three molts to reach the pristine condition. The long serrulate and simple short setae appear first, being seen in intermolt limb buds and commonly in both claws. Setae exclusive to each claw, i.e., plumoserrate and short serrulate in the pincer and plumose and long serrulate on the plunger in the snapper, appear sparsely in either the regenerated 1st or 2nd postmolt claw, they proliferate in the subsequent 2nd or 3rd postmolt claw. Transformation of the pincer claw to the snapper type begins in the 1st postmolt stage with the loss of pincer setae and addition of snapper setae and is completed by the 3rd postmolt stage. Since changes in composition of the external sensilla are restricted to postmolt stages, the underlying hypodermis is presumably being remodeled during proecdysis.  相似文献

Summary

The antenna 2 (antennal) flagella of decapod shrimps are chemotactile, and their setae are proposed as sensilla involved in recognition of females by males via a contact sex pheromone on the surface of the female. Male recognition of females receptive to mating occurs in many caridean species upon contact of male antennal flagella with the surface of a newly molted parturial female. The hypothesis of sexual dimorphism in the number and kind of setae on the antennal flagella of four caridean and one penaeid shrimp species was tested with setal counts and observations on setal morphology. Unique male antennal setae (“male-specific sensilla”) were not identified in any of the species investigated. However, the abundance of antennal setae was significantly greater in males than in breeding females in the palaemonid carideans Palemonetes pugio and Macrobrachium ohione. In the hippolytid caridean Thor manningi and alpheid caridean Alpheus normanni, no sexual dimorphism in setal abundance was demonstrated. In the penaeoid Rimapenaeus similis, males had a higher abundance of antennal setae than the larger breeding females but so did juvenile females, similar in size to males. The sexual dimorphism in antennal sensilla in the palaemonid species and its absence in A. normanni might be related to their different mating systems, but no such association is suggested for T. manningi and R. similis. Setal morphology suggestive of chemoreceptive function (a terminal pore) was observed in all species.  相似文献

The sex pheromone, 2,6-dichlorophenol, was combined with a pesticide to control populations of the American dog tick,Dermacentor variabilis (Say). This pheromone persisted in the fur of treated dogs for at least 18 days. The mixture of pheromone and pesticide was much more effective in reducing mating among the surviving ticks than the treatments without pheromone. The pheromone-pesticide mixture also killed significantly more ticks than the treatment without pheromone. This increased effectiveness was due almost entirely to the significantly greater kill of male ticks. Combining the sex pheromone with pesticide treatments offers a means of suppressing tick populations by curtailing their mating and subsequent reproductive success. The potential applications of this technique and the benefits to be expected are discussed.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical staining based on a peroxidase-antiperoxidase method showed neurosecretory cells (NSC) reactive to bovine insulin in five of 18 paraldehyde fuchsin-positive neurosecretory regions (NSR) in the synganglion of unfed adult Dermacentor variabilis. This is the first report of a neuropeptide in an ixodid tick. The insulin-specific immunoreactive cells included the posterior medial group of the protocerebral center, posterior group of dorsal opisthosomal center, anterior lateral group of the dorso-lateral cheliceral center, dorsal group of the frontal stomodeal center, and anterior group of the ventral palpal center. After feeding and mating, females no longer had immunoreactive cells in three of five NSR found in virgin, unfed females. However, two cells of the posterior group in dorsal opisthosomal center and anterior lateral group of the dorso-lateral cheliceral center remained immunoreactive throughout feeding. Fed, mated males continued to display immunoreactive cells in four of five NSR found in the virgin, unfed males. All developmental stages of nymphs examined had insulin-specitic immunoreactive cells in two of the five NSR found in unfed adults, including two positively stained cells of the posterior group in dorsal opisthosomal center and anterior group of ventral palpal neurosecretory center.  相似文献

The surface structures of the antennular flagella of Pagurus alaskensis are described in detail. Attention is directed towards the surface morphology of two types of possible sensilla: (1) exoskeletal pores (1.0–3.0 μm in diameter); (2) setae of various kinds. In addition, small (0.1–0.2 μm) pits occur in the exoskeleton which are not considered to be sensory in function. The exoskeletal pores are found at fairly specific locations on both the inner and outer flagella, particularly on the short segments of the outer flagella. Neither the inner nor the outer flagella are bilaterally symmetrical with respect to their setal armature. On the outer flagellum six groups of setae may be distinguished: lateralmesial; dorsal; ventral; accessory; aesthetasc; setae of the distal segment. On the inner flagellum setae of the mesial and lateral rows form distinctive groups. The morphology, orientation and locations of all the flagellar setae are defined and where possible the numbers of the various morphological types within the specific setal groups are given. It is noteworthy that many setal types have obvious apical pores and yet no pores could be found in the chemoreceptive aesthetasc setae. The functions of the various setae are discussed in relation to their topographical position and to existing electrophysiological and behavioral data. Some suggestions are made about future experiments to demonstrate the central connections of specific sensilla or groups of sensilla and to show their significance in the whole animal.  相似文献

The release of the defence secretion from the large wax glands (sensilla sagittiformia) of Dermacentor variabilis ticks modifies the behaviour of other ticks by inducing clustering. A coating of natural tick secretion onto test objects (delipidized ticks, glass beads or filter paper discs) also elicits a clustering response, but a topically applied squalene, its major component, does not have this effect. The clustering response appears to be species specific: D. variabilis cluster on conspecific ticks that secreted but they fail to cluster on Amblyomma americanum or Ixodes scapularis ticks unless coated with secretions from D. variabilis. Volatile components in the defence secretion are involved in recruiting conspecific ticks to those that secreted. When attacked by predatory fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, D. variabilis clustered on individuals that had released the defence secretion. This suggests that the secretion protects ticks from predation by functioning as an alarm pheromone. If confirmed, this is the first report of an alarm pheromone and its glandular source in ticks. The terminology applicable to the integumental glands of ticks is discussed.  相似文献

In the kelp crab, Pugettia producta, flat plate setae cover all but the ventral surfaces of the walking leg dactyls. Dendrites enter the setal shaft located inside the plate superstructure, and extend to a region of the setal tip that contains a system of minute pores resembling the pore systems found in chemosensory sensilla of insects. Presumably, much of the chemosensitivity of the dactyls in the kelp crab is mediated by the plate setae. In the interior of the dactyl, supporting cells and the neurons innervating plate setae, other types of setae, and other presumptive sensilla form scolopidia. Large scolopidia, containing as many as 12 dendrites, appear to innervate some of the plate setae and also large ventral rodlike setae that might be chemosensory. Two of the dendrites of large scolopidia usually have more densely packed microtubules, longer ciliary axonemes, slightly larger rootlets, and dark A fibers with arms, characteristics indicative of mechanosensory function. Some dactyl setae, therefore, could be both mechanosensory and chemosensory. Small scolopidia containing two or three dendrites that exhibit mechanosensory characteristics appear to innervate small, rodlike setae, which presumably are strictly mechanosensory. The two types of structures located on the epicuticular cap, elliptical structures resembling campaniform sensilla and small cones in pits resembling CAP organs, appear to be dually innervated and presumably are mechanosensory, although other functions are possible. The internal positions of the scolopidia, together with the support afforded by an extracellular dendritic sheath, by the scolopale, and by desmosomelike and septate junctions, may serve to protect internal portions of setal dendrites, some of which appear to remain functional in nonmolting adults that have abraded setae.  相似文献

To allow an animal to behave appropriately, the location of sensorial structures is expected to be related to their function. As the different leg pairs of arachnids may have different functions (probing x supporting the body), one could expect them to have a different density of sensilla. Moreover, different regions of the same leg (dorsal, lateral, and ventral) would also be expected to have different densities of sensilla, according to the use of each region (e.g., the ventral part is often in contact with the substrate while the dorsal part is not). As cavernicolous animals are expected to be more sensitive than their epigean relatives, one could also expect a different density of sensilla when comparing cavernicolous and epigean animals. Using three epigean and three cavernicolous species of harvestmen (Arachnida, Opiliones), this study aimed at describing the morphology of hair sensilla on the legs and answering three questions: (1) Are there differences in the density of hair sensilla between the dorsal, lateral and ventral regions of each leg pair of the same individual? (2) Are there differences in the density of hair sensilla between the leg pairs of the same individual? (3) Are there differences in the density of hair sensilla when comparing the leg pairs of individuals of cavernicolous and non-cavernicolous species? The tarsi and metatarsi of all right legs of the six studied species were analyzed under a scanning electron microscope. The results (P < 0.05) showed that, in general: the ventral region of the tarsus was denser in sensilla trichodea than the lateral and dorsal regions, particularly on legs I and II; the density of sensilla chaetica did not differ on legs III and IV, but was greater on the dorsal region of legs I and II; the ventral part of legs I had the higher density of sensilla trichodea of the four pairs, whereas the second pair had the lower density; Holcobunus citrinus (Eupnoi) was the species with higher density of sensilla trichodea, on all legs; the cavernicolous species had a lower density of sensilla than the epigean species. The results are tentatively related to harvestmen behavior.  相似文献

The distribution of 5 types of sensilla was statistically analysed on the 4–10th antennal segments of the male click beetle Agriotes obscurus (Coleoptera : Elateridae). The distribution pattern of the trichoid pheromone receptors (T2 sensilla) and the olfactory basiconic B1B2 sensilla on the antennae of male A. obscurus differs significantly from the distribution pattern of the contact chemoreceptors (T1 sensilla) and probably the non-olfactory B7 and D sensilla. A significant peculiarity of the distribution of olfactory sensilla is their location on the antennal segments as 2 separate (dorsal and ventral) fields of sensilla. The numbers of T2 and B1B2 sensilla on dorsal fields of sensilla of the 4–10th segments increase towards the apex of the antenna nearly linearly. On ventral fields of sensilla of the 4–10th antennal segments, the number of B1B2 sensilla is nearly uniform; the number of T2 sensilla in the proximal part of the antenna increases towards the apex, but on distal segments of the antenna their number stabilizes. It is characteristic of both the T2 and to B1B2 sensilla that their numbers are slightly greater on anterior than posterior sides of dorsal sensillar fields, and also greater on posterior than anterior sides of ventral sensillar fields of all antennal segments investigated. We assume that the number of olfactory sensilla on the antennae of male beetles coincides with the distribution of strength of olfactory signal on the antennae of beetles orientating in an odour plume. The distribution patterns of T2 and B1B2 sensilla of the male A. obscurus can be related to some behavioural peculiarities of olfactory orientation (walking or flying and vibrating of the antennae).  相似文献

Summary The tarsus of S. gregaria is divided into three units (here called segments) and an arolium set between a pair of claws. The first segment bears three pairs of pulvilli in the fore and middle legs, and one pair and two single pulvilli in the hind legs. Segment two bears a pair of pulvilli, segment three one long pulvillus and the arolium a similar pad on the undersurface. The outer layers of the arolium pad differ from those of the pulvilli in possibly lacking an epicuticle and in having a layer of cuticle which, unlike the corresponding layer in the pulvilli, does not stain with protein stains. The claws and dorsal surfaces bear trichoid sensilla, basiconic sensilla and campaniform sensilla. Smaller basiconic sensilla and canal sensilla occur on the proximal part of the pulvilli, and basiconic sensilla on the arolium undersurface. Internally the cuticle is modified in the arolium and pulvilli so that rods of probably chitin and resilin are formed. This would impart flexibility to the undersurfaces whilst retaining some degree of rigidity which might prevent damage to the small and delicate sense organs on the pulvilli. The tip of the arolium is specialised for adhesion, and there are two large neurones internally which could conceivably monitor attachment or detachment of the tip. There are chordotonal organs in segment three, and several other large neurones throughout the tarsus, some of which are associated with the slings of tissue holding the apodeme in a ventral position. Gland cells occurring in the dorsal epidermis of the adult mature male are also briefly described.  相似文献

Abstract. This study was undertaken to determine if body size of female ticks was an important factor in eliciting the mating behaviour of Dermacentor variabilis and D. andersoni males. Dummy female ticks (DFTs) representing varying sizes of feeding females were prepared from plastic beads. Size of DFT was shown to be important in determining both the time spent by males in contact with DFTs and the extent of male mating response released. Dermacentor varlabilis males preferred the smaller-sized DFT, whereas D. andersoni males preferred the larger sizes. Males of both species were able to discriminate between size of DFT only when mounting sex pheromone (MSP) was present.
Size of the DFT was more important than the composition of the MSP extract in determining the time males spent in contact with DFTs.
Males of both species were sensitive to variations in concentration of extract, and spent 2–6 times longer in contact with DFTs when the concentration was optimal than when it was not. No significant difference in the male's mating response was seen in response to variation in concentration of heterospecific extract.
Male mating response, i.e. the behaviour of the male as it progresses through the initial contact, climbing onto the dorsal surface and turning onto the venter, was shown not to be dependent upon how long the male spent in contact with the DFT. Male D. andersoni had a much lower mating response to DFTs than D. variabilis males, suggesting that some further stimulus may be required.  相似文献

In arachnids, pedipalps are highly variable appendages that may be used in feeding, courtship, defense, and agonistic encounters. In cosmetid harvestmen, adults have pedipalps that feature flattened femora, spoon‐shaped tibiae, and robust tarsal claws. In contrast, the pedipalps of nymphs are elongate with cylindrical podomeres and are adorned with delicate pretarsi. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to examine the distribution of cuticular structures (e.g., sensilla chaetica, pores) on the elements of the pedipalps of adults and nymphs of three species of cosmetid harvestmen. Our results indicate that there is considerable ontogenetic variation in the morphology of the trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, and tarsus. The pretarsus of the nymph has a ventral patch of setae that is absent from the adult tarsal claw. We observed this structure on all three cosmetid species as well as on the pedipalps of an additional seven morphospecies of nymphs collected in Belize and Costa Rica. This structure may represent a previously unrecognized autapomorphy for Cosmetidae. Examinations of the pedipalps of antepenultimate nymphs of additional gonyleptoidean harvestmen representing the families Ampycidae, Cranaidae, Manaosbiidae, and Stygnidae revealed the occurrence of unusual, plumose tarsal setae, but no setal patches on the tarsal claw.  相似文献
