Summary The fine structure of the cerebral gland of the fresh water snail Planorbarius corneus has been described. The apical cell surfaces of the epithelium bordering the lumen are covered with short microvilli and in some parts with cilia. There is a remarkable enlargement of the basal surface of those cells underlying the perineurium by long branched cell processes. The fine structure and density of the substances in the lumen differ; inclusions of paracrystallin structure are found. The possible functional significance of these organs in Pulmonates is discussed.

Summary By means of partial illumination with small spots of monochromatic light, polarized obliquely to the cell axis, we could demonstrate that the phytochrome molecules inMougeotia are oriented in a spiral pattern around the cell surface. The lines of this spiral form an angle of about 45^o with the cell axis. The degree of exactness of this orientation has been discussed.

Zum Feinbau der koshewnikowschen drüse bei der honigbiene Apis mellifica (Insecta,Hymenoptera)

An electron microscopic examination of the KOSHEWNIKOW gland of the honeybee showed that the origin of the draining ductule extended into the gland cell through an invagination without actual cytoplasmic connection being made. The structure of the wall of the dendritic apical ramifications of the duct cell is very loose where it is in juxtaposition to the microvilli of the wall of the gland cell. In contrast, the rest of the duct wall is very dense.

Summary Two types of larvae ofMalacosoma neustria (L.) different in their behaviour as well as in their activity, produce also layers of hemocytes of different thickness after parasitization by the tachinidMericia ampelus wilk. A nuclear polyhedrosis that occurred simultaneously killed both larval types at different speed. The possibility is discussed that the quality of the hemocyte reaction to parasitization depends not only directly on the larval type, but also indirectly through the polyhedrosis.

Summary In a light and electron microscope study on Reissner's fibre of Pristella riddlei Meek and larvae of Salamandra salamandra terrestris it is shown, that there are appositions of cell detritus in the whole length of Reissner's fibre. This observation supports Olsson's theory of a transport function of Reissner's fibre.

Summary A method of artificial mass-breeding ofCeratitis capitata has been developped after the results obtained byFinney andChristenson. The breeding of the larvae is obtained on a medium made of powdered atomised carrot and brewer's yeast, the development of molds and bacteria being inhibited by benzo?c and hydrochloric acids. Nearly 80 per cent of the eggs give adult flies. An original method for obtaining the eggs in an artificial egg-laying apparatus is described. The development of the insect is completed in 21 days at the temperature of 26°C. A daily production of 20 000 flies or more is easily obtained, at very low cost, by the work of a single person.

Teliospore germination and compatibility groups in Sphacelotheca tanglinensis

Teliospores ofS. tanglinensis germinate readily in tap water, each producing a 4-celled promycelium bearing 4 sporidia. Sporidia become 2 or more celled after detaching from the promycelium. Fusion between compatible sporidia occurs in a number of ways resulting in hyphae formation. Teliospores form in 3-month old compatibly mated sporidial cultures. Compatibility inS. tanglinensis is a bipolar type.

Nukleolarvakuolen in den Zellen des Embryosackes vonJasione montana L.

Summary The transparent integument ofJasione montana ovules enables the observation of the nucleolar vacuolar pulsation in egg cell, in secondary nucleus and after the fertilization in zygote, in primary endosperm nucleus and in cells of embryo and endosperm too. The rate of vacuolar pulsation depends on their volume, on the total cell activity and with the endosperm cells on the length of their mitotic cycle. Vacuolar activity can be observed continuously during the developmental cycle of the endosperm cell nucleoli. It starts immediately after the nucleolus formation in telophase, it continues during entire interphase and it ends immediately before the nucleolus disappearence in the late prophase. The pulsation is not interrupted during the nucleoli fusion in prophase.

Untersuchungen über die Wirkung des hydrostatischen Druckes auf das Wachstum von Delesseria sanguinea (L.) Lamour. aus der westlichen Ostsee

Observations on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the growth of Delesseria sanguinea (L.) Lamour. from the western Baltic Sea.The post-treatment effects of hydrostatic pressures (100–500 atm) on the growth in lenght and breadth of young prolifications of D. sanguinea were studied at 15°C. Growth activity was compared amongst the prolifications separated from the midrib and not separated ones, and cell-viability as influenced by high pressures was also observed under the microscope. Pressure-temperature relationship was investigated, in which the pressure effects on growth were studied at different temperatures (5°–22°C), using prolifications which were previously adapted to corresponding temperatures. Long-termed experiments were also set up to study the capability of pressure adaptation in young leaflets. In this regard the growth activity was measured after long-termed exposure to relatively smaller pressures (20–60 atm).

Zusammenfassung Die komplizierten, bipektinaten Osphradien der NeogastropodenBuccinum undatum undNeptunea antiqua sind durch folgende Zelltypen gekennzeichnet: Die hochprismatischen Stützzellen stellen den Hauptteil des mehrreihigen Osphradialepithels und sind durch ein reich ausgebildetes Villussystem sowie zahlreiche Pigmentgranula charakterisiert. Bisweilen tragen sie Zilien. Mindestens zwei Schleimzelltypen lassen sich unterscheiden. Den verschiedenen Sinneszelltypen lassen sich zwei Funktionen zuordnen: der Chemorezeption und dem Tastsinn. Die Funktion eines weiteren Typs mit stark ausgebildetem glattem endoplasmatischem Reticulum bleibt unbekannt.

The osphradium of the prosobranch gastropods Buccinum undatum L. and Neptunea antiqua (L.)

Summary The complicated, bipectinate osphradia of the NeogastropodsBuccinum undatum andNeptunea antiqua are characterized by the following cell types: The columnar supporting cells of the pseudostratified epithelium form the bulk of the epithelial cells and exhibit a profusely developed system of microvilli and an abundance of pigment granules. Occasionaly they are ciliated. At least two types of mucous cells can be distinguished. The different types of sensory cells can be associated with two functions: chemoreception and touch appreciation. An additional sensory cell type with a well developed system of smooth endoplasmic reticulum cannot be related to any particular function.

Außerdem ergeben sich Hinweise, die taxonomische Affinitäten einiger Blattsymbionten in Rubiaceae zu den Rhizobiaceae vermuten lassen.

Summary By application of the DNA-DNA-hybridizationmethod (McCarthy and Bolton, 1963) relatedness between the genera Agrobacterium and Rhizobium is demonstrated. Some indications show taxonomic affinities of symbionts in leaves of Rubiaceae to the Rhizobiaceae.

22. Beitrag zur Kenntnis derAphidiidae.     

Untersuchungen über die lichtabhängige Carotinoidsynthese

Summary In conidia-free submerged cultures of Neurospora crassa the various steps of light-dependend carotenoid synthesis were studied. The mycelium produces small amounts of pigments even in the dark. The data obtained are in part in good agreement with earlier results of Zalokar and show that the light-induced pigment production starts after a lag-period of 40 min and is finished after 6–8 hours; the photoreaction is saturated by relatively small dosages. In contrast to Zalokar's results we found that for photoinduction the reciprocity law holds true. The photoreaction is saturated by a certain amount of light independently of the light-intensity. Actidion (Cycloheximide) inhibits carotenoid synthesis completely when added before or up to 10 min after the onset of illumination, whereas addition 60 min after illumination already has no effect. Comparison with the results obtained with Fusarium shows that the reaction mechanism is very similar in both organisms, though the various steps seem to proceed faster in Neurospora.

Zusammenfassung In sauren methanolischen Extrakten aus gametophytischem Gewebe vonLophocolea bidentata (L.)Dum. undPlagiochila asplenioides (L.)Dum. konnte zum ersten Male Ellagsäure mit Hilfe dünnschichtchromatographischer Methoden identifiziert werden. Daneben fanden sich in den Extrakten noch einige andere bisher noch nicht identifizierte Phenole, darunter möglicherweise 8 Flavonoide.

Summary Ellagic acid was detected in acidic methanol-extracts of gametophytic tissue ofLophocolea bidentata (L.)Dum. andPlagiochila asplenioides (L.)Dum. The identification was accomplished by thin-layer Chromatographic methods. Beside this compound some more still unidentified phenolics were found, among those probably 8 flavonoids.

Summary Action potentials from single visual cells of the compound eye are lead off during illumination of the retina of Calliphora erythrocephala by means of intracellular capillary microelectrodes. The size of the monophasic and depolarizing action-potentials depends on light-intensity and on plane of polarized light. Turning the plane of polarization from maximum to minimum efficacy equals a decrease of intensity of about 50%. As the dioptric apparatus is optically isotropic, the experiments described here prove the hypothesis of Autrum and Stumpf, namely that the single visual cell responds to different planes of polarization with different states of excitation.
