STAT3 has been known as a mediator for gene expression induced by many important cytokines. Recent studies have suggested that STAT3 has important functions in regulation of both innate and adaptive immunity. Loss of STAT3 in immune cells caused severe inflammation in response to pathogens. We are facing serious environmental challenges, and environmental biotechnology is an enabling technology to reduce or eliminate pollution. In recent years, environmental pollution in China has been receiving great attention, and this paper provides an up-to-date review on progress in biodegradation research in China. This progress includes the isolation of extremophilic microorganisms for pollutant degradation in extreme conditions and the study of genes and enzymes related to biodegradation pathways. Biodegradation engineering has potential as an interesting and powerful platform, where genetic engineering, process engineering, and signal transduction engineering are applied together. In addition, pollutant treatment combined with the production of renewable sources of bioenergy by microorganisms is attractive.  相似文献

It is now almost 15 years since the publication of the first paper on text mining in the genomics domain, and decades since the first paper on text mining in the medical domain. Enormous progress has been made in the areas of information retrieval, evaluation methodologies and resource construction. Some problems, such as abbreviation-handling, can essentially be considered solved problems, and others, such as identification of gene mentions in text, seem likely to be solved soon. However, a number of problems at the frontiers of biomedical text mining continue to present interesting challenges and opportunities for great improvements and interesting research. In this article we review the current state of the art in biomedical text mining or 'BioNLP' in general, focusing primarily on papers published within the past year.  相似文献

The complex nature of herpesvirus particles, which comprise icosahedral and membrane-bound elements, makes them interesting models for studies of virion organisation and assembly. Considerable advances have been made in understanding the structure of the virus particle, largely as a result of applying cryoelectron microscopy techniques. As genome sequences and protein structures are deciphered, we wish to predict their corresponding functions. Many functions cannot be told from from the sequence, however, although there has been progress in this quest for an impossible Grail. Furthermore, a structure and its corresponding sequence become most interesting when one knows the function. Inductive reasoning, based on the integration of biological and sequence knowledge, should enable sequence and functional data to be combined in a productive way.  相似文献

Calcium mobilization has been demonstrated to possess functional importance in myocardial excitation-contraction as well as cellular metabolism. During recent years, the proteomics field has moved onward to clinical applications, particularly for biomarker discovery, diagnostics and prognostics of human diseases. The urine is one of the ideal clinical samples for such applications because it is readily available in almost all patients, and its collection is very simple and non-invasive. Urinary proteomics thus becomes one of the most interesting subdisciplines in the clinical proteomics area. Recent progress in understanding the evolution of vertebrate genomes has been rapid, and previous notions that all such genomes could be regarded as equivalent in their gene content have been rendered outdated. This notion, often embodied in the representation that vertebrates possess four Hox complexes, still appears in contemporary textbooks of developmental biology. Recent data from the genomes of teleost fish show that this assumption is untrue and suggest that interesting situations might arise from the apparent proliferation of genes among fish.  相似文献

Tissue transglutaminase (transglutaminase 2) is a multifunctional enzyme with many interesting properties resulting in versatile roles in both physiology and pathophysiology. Herein, the particular involvement of the enzyme in human diseases will be outlined with special emphasis on its role in cancer and in tissue interactions with biomaterials. Despite recent progress in unraveling the different cellular functions of transglutaminase 2, several questions remain. Transglutaminase 2 features in both confirmed and some still ambiguous roles within pathological conditions, raising interest in developing inhibitors and imaging probes which target this enzyme. One important prerequisite for identifying and characterizing such molecular tools are reliable assay methods to measure the enzymatic activity. This digest Letter will provide clarification about the various assay methods described to date, accompanied by a discussion of recent progress in the development of inhibitors and imaging probes targeting transglutaminase 2.  相似文献

Human tissue must be obtained promptly postmortem if it is to be successfully preserved.Legal assistance toward this goal has been established by the California Legislature.To implement this legislation the State Board of Public Health has established regulations relating to human tissue preservation. These are the first such regulations in the nation.Tissue preservation is not yet fully developed. Much research is in progress to overcome many problems.The future may hold interesting developments. Microarrays have revolutionized gene expression analysis as they allow for highly parallel monitoring of mRNA levels of thousands of genes in a single experiment. Since their introduction some 15 years ago, substantial progress has been achieved with regard to, e.g., faster or more sensitive analyses. In this review, interesting new approaches for a more sensitive detection of specific mRNAs will be highlighted. SH3 Domains provide interesting targets for investigations of protein structure and dynamics because of their compact size and importance for signal transduction. The present review summarizes recent research investigating SH3 domain structure and dynamics, the discovery of novel SH3 domains, the role of SH3 domains in disease, and progress in targeting SH3 domains for the development of novel therapeutics. As member of glycosyl hydrolase family 13, maltooligosaccharide-forming amylases (MFAses) are specific and interesting because of their capacity to hydrolyze starch into functional maltooligosaccharides, which are usually composed of 2–10 α-d-glucopyranosyl units linked by α-1,4 glycosidic linkages. MFAses have been extensively studied during recent decades, and have shown promise in various industrial applications. This review begins by introducing the potential uses of maltooligosaccharides. Then it describes the progress in the identification, assay, action pattern, structure, and modification of MFAses. The review continues with tips concerning the preparation of MFAses, which aim to improve MFAse production to meet the needs of industry. Finally, the industrial uses of MFAses are described, focusing on the production of maltooligosaccharides and application in the bread industry. Recent progress has demonstrated that the MFAses are poised to become important industrial catalysts.  相似文献
