Rostain, J. C., M. C. Gardette-Chauffour, and R. Naquet. EEG and sleep disturbances during dives at450 msw in helium-nitrogen-oxygen mixture. J. Appl.Physiol. 83(2): 575-582, 1997.To study the effects of nitrogen addition to the breathing mixture on sleep disturbances at pressure, two dives were performed in whichhelium-nitrogen-oxygen mixture was used up to 450 m sea water (msw). Intotal, sleep of 12 professional divers was analyzed (i.e., 184 nightrecords). Sleep was disrupted by compression and by stay at 450 msw: we observed an increase in awake periods and in sleep stages I and II anda decrease in stages III and IV and in rapid-eye-movement sleepperiods. These changes, which were more intense at thebeginning of the stay, began to decrease from the seventh day of thestay, but the return to control values was recorded only during the decompression at depths below 200 msw. These changes were equivalent tothose recorded in other experiments with helium-oxygen mixture in thesame range of depths and were independent of the intensity of changesrecorded in electroencephalographic activities in awake subjects.

Three professional divers have performed a dive to 450 msw. From 200 msw and during the first 64 h on the bottom, they breathed a H2-He-O2 mixture with 54-56% H2. At this time a switch was performed to a mixture with 30% H2, and 8 h later a second switch was performed to 0% H2. In the H2-He-O2 mixture the clinical symptoms of high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS) were not present and the electroencephalogram changes were slight. The switch of the mixture induced an isobaric HPNS of high intensity. Twenty-four hours later the HPNS decreased, but the clinical symptoms persisted throughout the stay in the He-O2 mixture. The appearance of isobaric HPNS during the switch might be due to the disappearance of the narcotic substance which suppressed or masked the clinical symptoms; it might also be due to the sudden increase in the partial pressure of He, which was equivalent to a fast compression.  相似文献

The rationale for the present study was to test the hypothesis that increased work of breathing during experimental deep diving may lead to respiratory muscle fatigue. For this purpose, electromyograms (EMGs) of respiratory and skeletal muscles, plus electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram (EEG) derivatives, were continuously recorded in conscious cats. In each muscle group, the ratio of power in a high (H) to that in a low (L) band of EMG frequencies was computed. Direct diaphragmatic stimulation in selected animals produced a mass action potential to obtain the muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV). The maximal pressure was 101 ATA (1,000 msw) with a maximal duration of 72 h. Four cats breathed an He-O2 mixture and five others a ternary mixture (10% N2 in He-O2). Inspired O2 partial pressure was 350 Torr. With the He-O2 mixture, all the animals died within 2-54 h during the study at maximal depth. EEG signs of high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS) were present in all cats, and low-frequency (11-14 Hz) hyperbaric tremor discontinuously contaminated all EMG tracings. The H/L ratio computed from diaphragmatic and intercostal muscle EMGs increased after 12 h at 101 ATA. With the He-N2-O2 mixture, the cats survived until the end of the sojourn at 101 ATA, during which no hyperbaric tremor was detected from EMG tracings, and EEG signs of HPNS were weak or absent. From 31 ATA, the H/L ratio decreased significantly in respiratory but not in skeletal muscles; this was associated with decreased MFCV in the diaphragm after several hours at maximal depth.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The emergence of the occipital alpha rhythm on brain electroencephalogram (EEG) is associated with brain activity in the cerebral neocortex and deep brain structures. To further understand the mechanisms of alpha rhythm power fluctuation, we performed simultaneous EEGs and functional magnetic resonance imaging recordings in human subjects during a resting state and explored the dynamic relationship between alpha power fluctuation and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signals of the brain. Based on the frequency characteristics of the alpha power time series (APTS) during 20-minute EEG recordings, we divided the APTS into two components: fast fluctuation (0.04–0.167 Hz) and slow fluctuation (0–0.04 Hz). Analysis of the correlation between the MRI signal and each component revealed that the slow fluctuation component of alpha power was positively correlated with BOLD signal changes in the brain stem and the medial part of the thalamus and anterior cingulate cortex, while the fast fluctuation component was correlated with the lateral part of the thalamus and the anterior cingulate cortex, but not the brain stem. In summary, these data suggest that different subcortical structures contribute to slow and fast modulations of alpha spectra on brain EEG.  相似文献

The EEG mapping study tested age-related changes in power of EEG rhythms from delta to gamma ranges under healthy cognitive aging associated with preserved cognitive abilities and involvement in complex professional activity. 32 subjects of higher age group (HAG, mean age 65.1 +/- 1.18, 14 men and 18 women) and 33 subjects of lower age group (LAG mean age 22.1 +/- 0.38, 18 men and 15 women) participated in the study. Mean power of slow (delta, theta and alpha2) activity decreased and of fast activity (beta, gamma) increased as subject age increased. Compared to subjects of LAG subjects of HAG displayed a reduction in heterogeneity of EEG activity across recording sites. Centro-temporal gradients of power for frequency ranges from delta to beta2 and frontoparietal gradients and hemispheric asymmetry for alpha and beta1 rhythms were smoothed in subjects of HAG. These results suggest that observed age-related changes in baseline EEG may be the prerequisite for compensatory neural recruitment that may be associated as with allocation of more resources in cognitive processes so with reorganization of cortical networks including areas susceptible to physiological changes with aging.  相似文献

The results of the present study indicate first that in the microsomal preparation, the components of the P-450 reduction system are heterogeneously distributed, comprising dissociable and nondissociable parts. Second, the P-450 reduction curve can be adequately described by a sum of two exponential functions, indicating two concurrent first-order reactions. Third, the two phases can be altered independently. The addition of the substrate increased the extent of the fast phase while it had little or no effect on that of the slow phase. Changes in the interaction of the dissociable and nondissociable components affected the extent of the slow phase while they were without effect on that of the fast phase. Experiments with different steroids indicated that the independence of the two phases is not due to functionally different P-450's and that the cytochrome reduced in both phases is essentially P-450C-21. The results are interpreted as follows: Transformation of P-450 from the low- to the high-spin state controls the total P-450 reduced. The rate and the biphasicity of the reduction are functions of the interaction of P-450 and the reductase.  相似文献

In looking at the thermoregulatory responses resulting from symmetrical or asymmetrical exercise, this paper has focused on the effect of local skin temperature (Tsk,local) on local sweat rates (msw,local) during one-legged (W1) and two-legged (W2) exercise on an ergocycle. Five subjects underwent four 3-h tests at 36 degrees C, each consisting of six 25-min exercise periods alternating with 5-min rest periods. The subjects performed W1 and W2 at 45 and 90 W, respectively, either dehydrated or rehydrated. Body temperatures and total sweat rate were measured as well as four msw,local (on chest and thighs), assessed from sweat capsules under which Tsk,local was maintained at predetermined levels (37.0 degrees C and 35.5 degrees C). The combinations of Tsk,local levels, capsule locations, exercise intensity and hydration level chosen in our protocol led to the following results. The hydration level affected rectal temperature but not total or msw,local. No specific effect of muscle activity was found; msw,local on thighs of resting and working legs were similar. The msw,local were only influenced by exercise intensity, msw,local being more elevated during the higher intensity. No significant effect of Tsk,local on msw,local was found, whatever the experimental condition and/or the location. It was concluded that local thermal effects on msw,local could have been masked by the strong central drive for sweating which has been found to exist in subjects exercising in a warm environment.  相似文献

Changes in human EEG caused by low level modulated microwave stimulation   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
This study focuses on the effect of low level microwave radiation on human EEG alpha and theta rhythms. During the experiment, 20 healthy volunteers were exposed to a 450 MHz microwaves with 7 Hz on-off modulation. The field power density at the scalp was 0.16 mW/cm2. Signals from the following EEG channels were used: FP1, FP2, P3, P4, T3, T4, O1, and O2. The experimental protocol consisted of one cycle of short term photic and ten cycles of the repetitive microwave stimulation. The changes caused by photic as well as microwave stimulation were more regular on the alpha rhythm. In the majority of cases, photic stimulation caused changes in the EEG energy level in the occipital and microwave stimulation in the frontal region. Our experimental results demonstrated that microwave stimulation effects became apparent, starting from the third stimulation cycle. Changes varied strongly from subject to subject. Therefore, photic and microwave exposure did not cause statistically significant changes in the EEG activity level for the whole group. For some subjects, clear tendencies of changes in microwave on-off cycles were noticeable.  相似文献

Multichannel EEG were recorded in young healthy subjects in two series of experiments during formation, actualization, and extinction of the visual unconscious set to the perception of unequal circles under conditions of increased motivation of subjects to the result of their performance. In the first series of experiments, subjects were promised to be rewarded (a small money price) for each correct response (the "general" rise of motivation). In the second series, subjects were promised to be rewarded for correct responses only in cases when one of the circles was larger than the other one (the "directed" rise of motivation). The dynamics of the EEG spectral power derived under these two conditions was compared with similar indices obtained earlier during formation of the same set without any special motivation of subjects (control). In all experimental conditions, before the presentation of the stimuli the EEG power in the alpha range was higher in subjects with the stable set. The dynamics of changes in the alpha power at set stages was principally similar in all conditions. In all the experimental conditions, in subjects with unstable set the EEG power in the delta range was highest at the stage of set actualization. The most pronounced generalized changes in the EEG power in the theta-range during the "general" rise of motivation in subjects with stable and unstable forms of set and greater variability of the reaction time to the probe stimulus suggest that the task performance under these conditions required greater tension than under conditions of the "directed" rise of motivation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of altered metabolic acid-base status on the changes in ventilation in the transition from heavy exercise above anaerobic threshold to rest. Seven subjects ingested, in a randomized and blind manner, either NaHCO3 or CaCO3 (placebo) at a dose of 300 mg.kg-1 body mass and ran on a treadmill for five minutes (90% VO2max and above anaerobic threshold) on ten different occasions. Changes in minute ventilation in the exercise transitions were studied by starting and stopping the treadmill abruptly with a remote switch. The fast increase in ventilation at the start of exercise was not accompanied by a corresponding fast drop in ventilation at the end of exercise (P less than or equal to 0.001) and the effects of chemicals on these changes were not significantly different (P greater than 0.05). A single-component exponential model, without a time delay, was used to determine the time constants of off-transitional decay in ventilation for the two chemicals in each subject. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests revealed that the time constants were not as significantly different as the venous pH measurements which were significantly higher with NaHCO3 (P less than or equal to 0.001). The results indicate that the absence of fast change in ventilation at the end of heavy exercise is not due to lactic acidosis and the consequent slow ventilatory changes in the off-transition of heavy exercise are at least partly mediated by non-humoral factors such as a central neural reverberatory mechanism.  相似文献

Cytochrome P450 (P450) reactions are of interest because of their relevance to the oxidative metabolism of drugs, steroids, carcinogens, and other chemicals. One of the considerations about functional characterization is which steps of the catalytic cycle are rate-limiting. Detailed analysis indicates that several different steps can be rate-limiting with individual P450 reactions. N-Dealkylation of para-substituted N,N-dimethylanilines is a function of the electron withdrawing/donating properties of the substituent and the oxidation-reduction potential of the substrate, supporting a role in rate-limiting electron transfer from substrate to the high valent P450. In the oxidations of ethanol and acetaldehyde by human P450 2E1, a step following product formation must be the slow step (but not product release per se). Several oxidations catalyzed by human P450s 1A2 and 2D6 show slow C-H bond breaking, and apparent high-valent iron complexes accumulate in the reaction steady-state. Kinetic simulations were used to test the suitability of potential schemes and to probe the effects of changes in individual reaction steps.  相似文献

Harmaline and ibogaine i.v. administration induced in the photosensitive baboon restlesness and tremor (8-12 Hz). The former increased the EEG frequency particularly in central regions with appearance of bursts at 20-24 c/s and blocked by somatic movement. The latter produced a slight enhancement of frontal fast rhythms. Both drugs blocked the spontaneous paroxysmal activity with little effect on photosensitivity. These effects lasted for 2-4 hrs. Vincamine produced agitation during 15 min. post-i.v.-administration and showed an "hypervigilant" EEG. Nor vincamine or Hydergine altered the degree of photosensitivity. Cerebellar involvement in the action of harmaline and iboga?ne is discussed.  相似文献

Several studies have measured the elastic properties of a single human muscle-tendon unit in vivo. However the viscoelastic behavior of single human muscles has not been characterized. In this study, we adapted QLV theory to model the viscoelastic behavior of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units in vivo. We also determined the influence of viscoelasticity on passive length-tension properties of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units. Eight subjects participated in the experiment, which consisted of two parts. First, the stress relaxation response of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units was determined at a range of knee and ankle angles. Subsequently, passive ankle torque and ankle angle were collected during cyclic dorsiflexion and plantarflexion at a range of knee angles. Viscous parameters were determined by fitting the stress relaxation experiment data with a two-term exponential function, and elastic parameters were estimated by fitting the QLV model and viscous parameters to the cyclic experiment data. The model fitted the experimental data well at slow speeds (RMSE: 1.7 ± 0.5N) and at fast speeds (RMSE: 1.9 ± 0.2N). Muscle-tendon units demonstrated a large amount of stress relaxation. Nonetheless, viscoelastic passive length-tension curves estimated with the QLV model were similar to elastic passive length-tension curves obtained using a model that ignored viscosity. There was little difference in the elastic passive length-tension curves at different loading rates. We conclude that (a) the QLV model can be used to quantify viscoelastic behaviors of relaxed human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units in vivo, and (b) over the range of velocities we examined, the velocity of loading has little effect on the passive length-tension properties of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units.  相似文献

1. The various types of eye movement exhibited by the cyclopean eye of Daphnia pulex were studied using high speed motion photography. 2. This rudimentary eye, which consists of only 22 ommatidia, can move through approximately 150 degrees in the sagittal plane and 60 degrees in the horizontal plane. 3. Four classes of eye movement were found: (1) a high speed tremor at 16 Hz with an amplitude of 3-4 degrees, which resembles physiological nystagmus, (2) a slow rhythmic scanning movement at 4 Hz, and 5-6 degrees amplitude, (3) large fast eye movements similar to saccadic eye movements and (4) optokinetic nystagmus produced by moving striped patterns. 4. Where the fast tremor occurred concurrently with the slow rhythmic scan, a Fourier analysis revealed that the former was the fourth harmonic of the latter.  相似文献

Simultaneous washouts of He, N2, and SF6 were monitored during jet ventilation with tidal volumes of 50-200 ml and rates of 1-2 Hz. Gas concentrations were measured from the trachea and from a lower lobe bronchus in six baboons by mass spectrometry. Washouts using large tidal volumes approximated single exponential decays with the relative exponential rates of decay being He fastest, SF4 slowest, and N2 intermediate. Washouts using smaller tidal volumes demonstrated a two-phase exponential decay pattern. During the fast phase, the relative exponential rates of decay were He slowest, SF6 fastest, and N2 intermediate, the reverse order seen during large-volume washouts. During the slow phase, the relative exponential rates of decay were He fastest, SF4 slowest, and N2 intermediate, the same order seen during large-volume washouts. The magnitude of the first phase observed from the lower lobe bronchus was less than that observed from the trachea. These data are consistent with a serial two-compartment transport model incorporating a limitation of molecular diffusion between the peripheral and proximal compartments. The more rapid clearance of less diffusible gases from the central airways during the first phase of washout was due to slower transport from the alveoli to the central airways rather than faster transport from the central airways to the airway opening.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of three centrally acting drugs on the significant increase in the intermediate alpha frequency of the electroencephalogram (EEG) that accompanied meditation in a male volunteer. When compared to the EEG recorded before each of the three drugs was administered, naloxone tended to enhance the increase in the power of the intermediate alpha EEG (9.4-10.4 Hz), while diazepam tended to spread the increase to the slow (7.4-9.4 Hz) alpha EEG, and flumazenil was without much effect on the overall EEG pattern. However, these EEG changes when compared to similar changes obtained with saline administration were not significantly different from the latter. Thus, it is unlikely that the EEG correlates of meditation are causally related to the rise or fall of endogenous opioid peptides or benzodiazepinelike substances in the brain.  相似文献

Exposure to high hydrostatic pressure produces neurological changes referred to as the high-pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS). Manifestations of HPNS include tremor, EEG changes, and convulsions. These symptoms suggest an alteration in synaptic transmission, particularly with inhibitory neural pathways. Because spinal cord transmission has been implicated in HPNS, this study investigated inhibitory neurotransmitter function in the cord at high pressure. Guinea pig spinal cord synaptosome preparations were used to study the effect of compression to 67.7 atmospheres absolute on [3H]glycine and [3H]gamma-aminobutyric acid ([3H]GABA) release. Pressure was found to exert a significant suppressive effect on the depolarization-induced calcium-dependent release of glycine and GABA by these spinal cord presynaptic nerve terminals. This study suggests that decreased tonic inhibitory regulation at the level of the spinal cord contributes to the hyperexcitability observed in animals with compression to high pressure.  相似文献

At pH 2.0, acid-denatured CspA undergoes a slow self-assembly process, which results in the formation of insoluble fibrils. 1H-15N HSQC, 3D HSQC-NOESY, and 15N T2 NMR experiments have been used to characterize the soluble components of this reaction. The kinetics of self-assembly show a lag phase followed by an exponential increase in polymerization. A single set of 1H-15N HSQC cross-peaks, corresponding to acid-denatured monomers, is observed during the entire course of the reaction. Under lag phase conditions, 15N resonances of residues that constitute the beta-strands of native CspA are selectively broadened with increasing protein concentration. The dependence of 15N T2 values on spin echo period duration demonstrates that line broadening is due to fast NMR exchange between acid-denatured monomers and soluble aggregates. Exchange contributions to T2 relaxation correlate with the squares of the chemical shift differences between native and acid-denatured CspA, and point to a stabilization of native-like structure upon aggregation. Time-dependent changes in 15N T2 relaxation accompanying the exponential phase of polymerization suggest that the first three beta-strands may be predominantly responsible for association interfaces that promote aggregate growth. CspA serves as a useful model system for exploring the conformational determinants of denatured protein misassembly.  相似文献

Three adult male patas monkeys (11-15 kg) were heat acclimated by continuous exposure to an ambient temperature of 33 +/- 1 degree C at 13% relative humidity for 9 mo. During the last month, they were also exposed to 45 degrees C at 10% relative humidity for 4 h/day and 5 days/wk. Before and after 3 wk of acclimation, the animals were given a heat-tolerance test in which rectal (Tre) and mean skin (Tsk) temperatures, heart rate, and sweat rate (msw) were monitored during a 90-min exposure to 45 degrees C heat with 24% relative humidity under lenperone (1.0-1.4 mg/kg im) tranquilization. Maximal in vivo msw was also determined in response to subcutaneous injections (1 and 10% solutions) of methacholine (MCh). Before and after 9 wk and 9 mo of acclimation, sweat glands were dissected from biopsy specimens of the lateral calf, cannulated, and stimulated in vitro with MCh. Morphological measurements of isolated tubules were compared with maximal secretory rates produced by MCh stimulation. Three weeks of acclimation 1) reduced Tre and Tsk and increased msw during the heat tolerance test and 2) significantly increased maximal msw in response to MCh stimulation. Acclimation also increased (P less than 0.05) sweat gland size, as measured by tubular length and tubular volume. Maximal in vitro msw produced by MCh stimulation and msw per unit length of secretory coil also increased significantly. We conclude that heat acclimation increases the size of eccrine sweat glands and that these larger glands produce more sweat. They are also more efficient because they produce more sweat per unit length of secretory coil.  相似文献

To search for EEG-correlates of emotional processing that might be indicators of genetic predisposition to schizophrenia, changes in EEG spectral power during perception of neutral and emotionally salient words were examined in 36 schizophrenic patients, 50 of their unaffected first-degree relatives, and 47 healthy individuals without any family history of psychoses. In healthy persons, passive listening to neutral words induced minimum changes in cortical rhythmical activity, predominantly in the form of synchronization of slow and fast waves, whereas perception of emotional words was followed by a generalized depression of the alpha and beta1 activity and a locally specific decrease in the power of theta and beta2 frequency bands. The patients and their relatives showed a decrease in the alpha and beta1 activity simultaneously with an increase in the power of delta activity in response to both groups of words. Thus, in the patients and their relatives, reactions to neutral and emotional words were ulterior as a result of augmented reactions to the neutral words. These findings suggest that the EEG changes reflect familial and possibly hereditable abnormal involuntary attention. No prominent decrease in reactivity to emotional stimuli was revealed in schizophrenic families.  相似文献
