Larvae of all three southern hemisphere anadromous parasitic lampreys were collected from rivers in Australia, New Zealand and South America. Body intervals were measured, trunk myomeres counted and the frequency of pigmentation in different body regions recorded. Morphometric data were subjected to multiple group principal components analysis (MGPCA) which took into account changes during growth. The components (together with myomere counts) and the pigmentation data were both subjected to discriminant analysis. Ordination and rank correlation tests revealed no evidence for either latitudinal clines or a continuum of circumpolar change amongst larval lamprey populations. Clustering of population centroids clearly distinguished between Mordacia lapicida (Gray) from Chile and M. mordax (Richardson) from south-eastern Australia. Populations of Geotria australis Gray divided into groups representing three geographical regions, namely Argentina, Chile and Australasia (Western Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand). Ammocoetes from Argentina were the most divergent, possessing a more posterior cloaca, taller dorsal fins, a greater gap between dorsal fins, and distinctive pigmentation on the head and caudal fin. Within the Australasian group, Western Australian and New Zealand populations clustered closer than either did with those from Tasmania. The cluster analyses for larval populations of G. australis suggest that, during their marine trophic phase, the adults of this species originating from Argentinian and Chilean rivers follow different migratory routes, whereas those from Western Australia, New Zealand and, to a lesser extent, Tasmania intermix.  相似文献

Electrophoretic data for 15 enzymes encoded by 18 loci were analysed in samples of larval lampreys from two southern hemisphere species (Geotria australis and Mordacia mordax). Low values for Nei genetic distance coefficients for all loci in populations of G. australis from Western Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand (0.0013 to 0.0058) suggest that adults may intermix over distances greater than 4000 km. The average heterozygosity for four populations of G. australis (0.086) was much greater than for two populations of the far less widely distributed M. mordax (0.021).  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships between the two southern hemisphere lamprey families (Geotriidae and Mordaciidae) and their northern hemisphere counterparts (Petromyzontidae) are unresolved. Insulin was isolated from an extract of islet-containing intestinal tissue from ammocoetes of the Australian lamprey, Mordacia mordax. Its primary structure was established as A-chain: GIVEQCCHRK10CSIYDMENYC20N and B-chain: SALMGTGGTH10LCGSHLVEAL20YVVCGQRGFF30 YTP[SKG]. Although the residues in parentheses are only tentatively assigned, mass spectrometry supports the proposed sequence and demonstrates that Mordacia proinsulin, unlike proinsulin from Geotria australis, is fully processed to mature insulin. Insulins from M. mordax and G. australis and from the northern hemisphere lampreys Petromyzon marinus and Lampetra fluviatilis share a pentapeptide extension to N-terminus of the B-chain (Ser-Ala-Leu-Xaa-Gly) that has never been found in the insulins of any other vertebrate class. This observation provides support for the claim that the Petromyzontiformes constitute a monophyletic group. M. mordax insulin differs from that of G. australis by 18 amino acid residues but by only four residues from the common sequence of P. marinus and L. fluviatilis insulin. These data are consistent with the view that Geotriidae and Mordaciidae have been separated for a long period and suggest that G. australis insulin has undergone an accelerated rate of molecular evolution.  相似文献

Synopsis The resistance time of ammocoetes ofGeotria australis was related to the time of emergence from the substrate. The incipient lethal temperatures of animals acclimated at 5, 15 and 25° C were 27.3, 27.5 and 28.2° C respectively, the ultimate incipient lethal being 28.3° C. This value, which is similar to that of Northern Hemisphere lampreys such asLampetra planeri, almost certainly accounts for the restriction of this species to the southernmost rivers in Western Australia.  相似文献

The location and arrangement of the pancreatic endocrine tissue in larval and adult Geotria australis (Geotriidae) differ markedly from those exhibited by the comparable stages of Northern Hemisphere lampreys (Petromyzontidae). In larval Geotria australis, the main zones of islet proliferation are located laterally between the oesophagus and the inner edge of the two large intestinal diverticula unique to this species rather than dorsal and ventral to the oesophagus. In adult Geotria australis, the islet follicles are closely packed into a single discrete capsule which could be easily removed surgically, rather than into cranial, intermediate, and caudal cords. The differences in the adult can be related to a lack of involvement of the bile duct in islet formation during metamorphosis. While B cells were found in both larval and adult islet follicles, the PI acidophilic cells and argyrophilic cells, which appeared respectively at stages 3 and 4 in metamorphosis, were present in all adult stages.  相似文献

The intestinal contents of adults of 12 of the 18 species of parasitic lampreys were examined microscopically and tested for blood to determine whether a species fed mainly on blood, flesh or blood and flesh. The diets of each species are shown to be related to characteristics of their dentition, buccal glands and velar tentacles. The trends exhibited by those relationships were used to hypothesize as to the diets of those six species for which there were anatomical but not dietary data. The dentition aids the suctorial disc in attaching the lamprey to its host and removing host material, while velar tentacles prevent material entering the branchial cavity and buccal glands produce lamphredin that has anticoagulant and lytic properties. In blood feeders, such as Petromyzon marinus and Mordacia species, the w-shaped transverse lingual lamina and hook-shaped longitudinal laminae bear numerous, fine cusps, which are ideal for rasping a hole in the host. In contrast, in flesh feeders, such as Lampetra fluviatilis and Geotria australis , the transverse lingual lamina is u shaped and the longitudinal laminae are straighter and possess at least one stout cusp, thereby facilitating the removal of host flesh through gouging. The buccal glands are generally larger in blood feeders than flesh feeders, presumably reflecting a need to produce anticoagulant continuously. Each velar tentacle contains a central cartilaginous rod, surrounded by a space which, during feeding, becomes engorged with blood and thus more rigid. They are small (≤1 mm long) and few (2–6) in blood feeders and large (typically ≥2 mm long) and numerous (3–42) in flesh feeders, which, in particular, require a mechanism for preventing solid material entering the branchial pouches and thus potentially clogging the gills. On the basis of recent cladistic analysis, blood feeding is ancestral to flesh feeding in Northern Hemisphere lampreys (Petromyzontidae).  相似文献

Mordacia mordax is a southern hemisphere lamprey belonging to Mordaciidae, a primitive family of Cyclostomata. Adult erythrocytes contain three monomeric hemoglobins which can be easily separated by cellulose acetate electrophoresis and isolated by ion-exchange chromatography. The N-terminal regions, and the tryptic peptides from each chain were submitted to automated Edman degradation; the alignment of the fragments was obtained by homology with the other Petromyzonoidea hemoglobins hitherto sequenced. Our results confirm the phylogenic distance between lampreys and hag-fish hemoglobins. As was observed for Petromyzon marinus species, two hemoglobins of Mordacia mordax are very close, as they differ only at 7 positions.  相似文献

Summary Freeze-fracture replicas show that communicating (gap) junctions are present between chloride cells in the gill epithelium of young adults of the Southern Hemisphere lamprey, Geotria australis, acclimated to full-strength sea water. The junctions, which were already present when these lampreys were migrating downstream, may help coordinate the secretory activities of the chloride cells during the marine phase of the lamprey life cycle.  相似文献

The standard rates of O2 consumption of larval Mordacia mordax (weight range 1.3-2.3 g), after these ammocetes had been in humidified air for 18 hr, were 26.8, 46.3 and 71.2 microL x g(-1) x hr(-1) at 10, 15 and 20 degrees C, respectively. The corresponding rates of CO2 excretion were 20.7, 35.6 and 54.1 microL x g(-1) x hr(-1). The RQs at the three temperatures were essentially identical (0.76 or 0.77) and similar to that of adults of the lamprey Geotria australis in air at 15 degrees C. The above RQs for ammocoetes, which are probably similar to those that would be recorded in water, are consistent with the view that the aerobic respiration of these animals relies predominantly on lipid as an energy source, but that some energy is derived from carbohydrate and/or protein. The RQs for larval and adult lampreys in air lie well within the range recorded for amphibious fishes in air.  相似文献

The sundew genus Drosera consists of carnivorous plants with active flypaper traps and includes nearly 150 species distributed mainly in Australia, Africa, and South America, with some Northern Hemisphere species. In addition to confused intrageneric classification of Drosera, the intergeneric relationships among the Drosera and two other genera in the Droseraceae with snap traps, Dionaea and Aldrovanda, are problematic. We conducted phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences of the chloroplast rbcL gene for 59 species of Drosera, covering all sections except one. These analyses revealed that five of 11 sections, including three monotypic sections, are polyphyletic. Combined rbcL and 18S rDNA sequence data were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among Drosera, Dionaea, and Aldrovanda. This analysis revealed that all Drosera species form a clade sister to a clade including Dionaea and Aldrovanda, suggesting that the snap traps of Aldrovanda and Dionaea are homologous despite their morphological differences. MacClade reconstructions indicated that multiple episodes of aneuploidy occurred in a clade that includes mainly Australian species, while the chromosome numbers in the other clades are not as variable. Drosera regia, which is native to South Africa, and most species native to Australia, were clustered basally, suggesting that Drosera originated in Africa or Australia. The rbcL tree indicates that Australian species expanded their distribution to South America and then to Africa. Expansion of distribution to the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern Hemispere occurred in a few different lineages.  相似文献

Synopsis Large numbers of the Southern Hemisphere lamprey, Geotria australis, have been found in the regurgitated food of albatrosses breeding on South Georgia. This finding suggests that this lamprey is found in large groups at sea, presumably associated with its host, and can travel very large distances from its natal streams. The length and morphology of the individuals from South Georgia, which almost certainly represent a South American stock, were compared with those of representatives of the immediately pre- and post-marine trophic stages of G. australis caught in Western Australia. No significant differences could be detected either in the number of trunk myomeres or in the number and arrangement of the teeth. The mean length of the animals (± 95% confidence limits) from South Georgia was 45.9 ± 0.90 cm compared with 10.0 ± 0.23 cm and 62.5 ± 0.85 cm in G. australis collected from Western Australia just before they had entered and returned from the sea respectively.  相似文献

This study demonstrates that the silver technique of Grimelius (Acta Soc. Med. Ups. 73:243–270, 68) is ideally suited for the study of cardiovascular chromaffin cells in lampreys. This method showed that in the Southern Hemisphere lamprey, Geotria australis, the distribution of chromaffin cells differs from that described for holarctic species. In G. australis, the chromaffin cells are found mainly in the sinus venosus, atrium, and nearby regions of the cardinal and jugular veins, and they are absent from the ventricle and conus arteriosus. The location and discreteness of the large accumulation of chromaffin cells in the lateral wall of the right posterior cardinal vein of adults resemble those of the precardiac axillary bodies of elasmobranchs. Chromaffin cells become more abundant during metamorphosis. The possible phylogenetic and functional significance of lamprey chromaffin cells is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Thaumastocoris peregrinus is a recently introduced invertebrate pest of non-native Eucalyptus plantations in the Southern Hemisphere. It was first reported from South Africa in 2003 and in Argentina in 2005. Since then, populations have grown explosively and it has attained an almost ubiquitous distribution over several regions in South Africa on 26 Eucalyptus species. Here we address three key questions regarding this invasion, namely whether only one species has been introduced, whether there were single or multiple introductions into South Africa and South America and what the source of the introduction might have been. To answer these questions, bar-coding using mitochondrial DNA (COI) sequence diversity was used to characterise the populations of this insect from Australia, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Uruguay. Analyses revealed three cryptic species in Australia, of which only T. peregrinus is represented in South Africa and South America. Thaumastocoris peregrinus populations contained eight haplotypes, with a pairwise nucleotide distance of 0.2–0.9% from seventeen locations in Australia. Three of these haplotypes are shared with populations in South America and South Africa, but the latter regions do not share haplotypes. These data, together with the current distribution of the haplotypes and the known direction of original spread in these regions, suggest that at least three distinct introductions of the insect occurred in South Africa and South America before 2005. The two most common haplotypes in Sydney, one of which was also found in Brisbane, are shared with the non-native regions. Sydney populations of T. peregrinus, which have regularly reached outbreak levels in recent years, might thus have served as source of these three distinct introductions into other regions of the Southern Hemisphere.  相似文献

Phenetic diversity is investigated and the taxonomic status of lampreys (Petromyzontidae) from the Kol basin (Western Kamchatka) is verified. Typically anadromous lamprey, anadromous lamprey forma praecox, resident lamprey, smolts, and larvae of lamprey are discovered and described. Their comparative analysis is made by standard morphometric characters. Differences between the forms by plastic characters depend on size and weight. No significant differences are found by major taxonomic characters between the forms of anadromous and resident lampreys which would indicate their taxonomic separation. Phenetic types of spawners are representatives of the population of one complexly structured species represented by life forms realizing different life history strategies (anadromous and resident), and belong to the species Arctic lamprey Lethenteron camtschaticum (Tilesius, 1811).  相似文献

Brown algae of the order Laminariales, commonly referred to as kelps, are the largest and most productive primary producers in the coastal inshore environment. The genus Ecklonia (Lessoniaceae, Phaeophyceae) consists of seven species with four species in the Northern Hemisphere and three in the Southern Hemisphere. It was recently transferred to the family Lessoniaceae based on phylogenetic analyses of nuclear and chloroplastic markers, though the type of the genus was not included and its relationship with allied genera Eckloniopsis and Eisenia remained unresolved. The present study is the first to produce a phylogeny focussed on the genus Ecklonia. It included sequences from nuclear, mitochondrial, and chloroplastic DNA, for most of the distribution range of the three current Southern Hemisphere species (Ecklonia radiata, Ecklonia maxima, and a sample of a putative Ecklonia brevipes specimen), sequences for East Asiatic species (Ecklonia cava, Ecklonia kurome, and Ecklonia stolonifera), as well as the closely related genera Eckloniopsis and Eisenia. Results confirmed E. radiata and E. maxima as two distinct species in South Africa, E. radiata as a single species throughout the Southern Hemisphere (in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand) and East Asiatic species as a distinct lineage from the Southern Hemisphere clade. Results further pointed out a close sister relationship between Eckloniopsis radicosa and two Eisenia species (including the type species: Eisenia arborea) to the genus Ecklonia suggesting that the genera Eckloniopsis and Eisenia are superfluous.  相似文献

The systematics of topshells (family Trochidae) is currently unresolved: at present even the generic boundaries within this group are poorly defined. In this study, we used sequence data of two mitochondrial genes (16S and cytochrome oxidase 1, COI) and one nuclear gene (actin) to resolve the phylogeny of a closely related subgroup of the Trochidae, 30 species of largely Southern Hemisphere monodontine topshells. The phylogenies constructed revealed five well-supported generic clades: a South African clade (genus Oxystele Philippi, 1847), which lay basally to four internal Pacific clades (genera Chlorodiloma Pilsbry, 1889; Monodonta Lamarck, 1799; Austrocochlea Fischer, 1885; and Diloma Philippi, 1845). The molecular phylogenies constructed in this study shed light on previously unresolved relationships between different groups of topshells, allowing for the first time assignation (based on DNA sequence) of clearly defined, well-supported taxonomic and nomenclatural classification of monodontine topshells species. Austrocochlea crinita (Philippi, 1849), A. odontis (Wood, 1828), A. adelaidae (Philippi, 1849), and A. millelineata (Bonnet, 1864) are placed in the genus Chlorodiloma, which we resurrect from synonymy with Austrocochlea. The Japanese M. confusa Tapparone-Canefri, 1874 is treated as a separate species from M. labio (Linné, 1758). Melagraphia Gray, 1847 is synonymised with Diloma and its sole member, M. aethiops (Gmelin, 1791), along with A. concamerata (Wood, 1828), is transferred to that genus. The Juan Fernandez endemic D. crusoeana (Pilsbry, 1889) is synonymised with D. nigerrima (Gmelin, 1791). We find that morphologically cryptic species are not necessarily close genetically.  相似文献

Abstract The present study uses differences among frugivore faunas of the southern hemisphere landmasses to test whether frugivore characteristics have influenced the evolution of fruit traits. Strong floristic similarities exist among southern landmasses; for example, 75% of New Zealand vascular plant genera also have species in Australia. However, plants in Australia and South America have evolved in the presence of a range of mammalian frugivores, whereas those in New Zealand, New Caledonia and the Pacific Islands have not. In addition, the avian frugivores in New Zealand and New Caledonia are generally smaller than those of Australia. If frugivore characteristics have influenced the evolution of fruit traits, predictable differences should exist between southern hemisphere fruits, particularly fruit size and shape. Fruit dimensions were measured for 77 New Zealand species and 31 Australian species in trans‐Tasman genera. New Zealand fruits became significantly more ellipsoid in shape with increasing size. This is consistent with frugivore gape size imposing a selective pressure on fruit ingestability. This result is not a product of phylogenetic correlates, as fruit length and width scaled isometrically for Australian species in genera shared with New Zealand. Within‐genus contrasts between New Zealand and Australian species in 20 trans‐Tasman genera showed that New Zealand species have significantly smaller fruits than their Australian counterparts. Within‐genus contrasts between New Zealand and South American species in nine genera gave the same result; New Zealand species had significantly smaller fruits than their South American counterparts. No difference was found in fruit size or shape between New Zealand and New Caledonia congeneric species from 12 genera. These results are consistent with the broad characteristics of the frugivore assemblage influencing the evolution of fruit size and shape in related species. The smaller‐sized New Zealand frugivore assemblage has apparently influenced the evolution of fruit size of colonizing taxa sometimes within a relatively short evolutionary timeframe.  相似文献

The Astereae is the largest tribe of Asteraceae in North America. Morphological diversity suggests that the North American assemblage is polyphyletic as 12 endemic genera, as well as lineages of the genus Erigeron and Conyza (Conyzinae), have been hypothesized to represent at least five separate invasions of North America from Africa, Australia, Eurasia, and South America. This hypothesis was tested with a phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequence data from the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Sequences for 62 taxa represent seven outgroup taxa and all major Northern and Southern Hemisphere groups of Astereae, including broad taxonomic and geographic sampling of Conyzinae and Aster s.l. (sensu lato). Parsimony analyses indicate that all North American Astereae are members of a strongly supported clade, and that a diverse group of predominantly woody taxa from Africa, Australia, and South America, are basal Astereae. Furthermore, Aster s.l. is deeply polyphyletic as Eurasian taxa, including Aster s.s. (sensu stricto), appear more closely related to Southern Hemisphere taxa than to North American Aster segregates. There is only low to moderate agreement between proposed higher level Astereae relationships based on ITS and those based either on morphology or chloroplast restriction site data.  相似文献
