The responses of individuals of Cherax destructor and Euastacus armatus to water containing stressed or unstressed crayfish were tested in the laboratory. Individuals of E. armatus showed only an increase in locomotion when stressed crayfish water was introduced. Individuals of C. destructor showed a decrease in the time spent in a lowered posture, an increase in the time spent in the raised posture and in grooming behaviour when stressed crayfish water was introduced. Individuals of C. destructor responded more strongly to heterospecific animals (Cherax rotundus and E. armatus) than to conspecifics. The levels of responses to the two heterospecific species were similar.  相似文献

During abundance surveys of the nine-armed sea star Luidia senegalensis (Lamark, 1816) in shallow waters north of Cubagua Island, Venezuela, novel locomotive behaviour was recorded in one sea star. The animal was observed to ‘walk’ with four arms in contact with the benthos whilst the remaining five were held erect. This previously unreported means of locomotion may be: for chemosensory detection of the surroundings; to alter the characteristic track pattern left in sediments as a means to avoid detection by predators; or, to lift the arms to attract commensal cleaners, thus eliminating epibiont commensals that may occupy the ambulacral groove. Whilst the predators of L. senegalensis remain unknown, earlier observations of serranid fish biting this species may support the notion of this behaviour as a predator avoidance strategy.  相似文献

Abstract

Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778) develops from small isolecithal eggs with a diameter of 84 ± 3 μm. Embryonic development took about 6.5–7 h and finished when a blastula left the fertilization envelope and became a larva. At this stage, the first pigment cells had appeared. At 23 h a prism developed; at 44 h a pluteus with one pair of arms had appeared; at 45 h of development plutei had two pairs of arms. The pigment cells colour the pluteus of D. setosum dark red. When 20-day-old larvae were mechanically stimulated, they flared their arms which may be defensive behaviour. During further development, the post oral arms of plutei grew to 1900 μm or more. Metamorphosis took place at about 40–45 days. At this time, five primary ambulacral podia were visible within the larval body. The duration of metamorphosis from the moment of larval settlement until the juvenile sea urchins began to move along the bottom was 40–60 min. The diameter of the test of the newly metamorphosed juvenile sea urchins was about 500 μm.  相似文献

The morphology of the pseudoplanktonic crinoid Traumatocrinus from the early Late Triassic (Carnian) Xiaowa Formation of Guanling County (South China, Guizhou Province) is described based on articulated and disarticulated material. Juvenile individuals of less than 10 mm crown height with 20 isotomously branching arms prove the encrinid ancestry of the family Traumatocrinidae. However, even the smallest individuals have five large interradials. Endotomous branching commences at crowns of slightly more than 10 mm at the outer arms of the rays. All brachial articulations are ligamentary (granosyzygies). The assignment of the Chinese material to one of the nominal species of Traumatocrinus is still left open. The diagnosis of the genus Traumatocrinus is emended. Traumatocrinus lived attached to driftwood and was widespread across the Palaeo-Tethys. In contrast to its benthic encrinid ancestors, Traumatocrinus fixed its distal column with countless anastomosing radicular cirri to its substrate, preferentially to the ends of the driftwood logs. Depending on the state of the hypothesized mutable collagene tissue, the columns are preserved in straight positions or curved like a rope. Crowns are preserved in star position with radially splayed arms or in lateral bell position with the cup disrupted in interbrachial position. As usual in black shales, the exposed upper sides of the crinoids are in a more or less progressive state of decomposition whereas the embedded lower sides are intact.  相似文献

Based on results of processing planktonic and benthic samples collected in 1996 and 1997, a spatial distribution of echinoderms in the bottom and of their larvae in the plankton were collated for the water area of the Southern region of the Far Eastern State Biosphere Marine Reserve. Some correlation between distributions of the adult and larval sea star Asterias amurensis in July was revealed. At the same time, there was no correlation between distributions of larvae and adult individuals of the brittle star Ophiura sarsi and sea urchin Echinocardium cordatum, which are most abundant in the area. The size structure of bottom populations of the brittle stars O. sarsi and Amphiodia fissa in the studied area was assessed. The correlation coefficient between the distribution of young-of-the-year and the population density was 0.47 in O. sarsi and 0.74 in A. fissa respectively, which implied a selective settling of larvae of those species in areas inhabited by adult brittle stars. Recruitment of bottom populations from 1996 spawning was 5% in O. sarsi and 3.3% in A. fissa.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to study the behavioural responses of the omnivorous Antarctic sea star Odontaster validus to natural food odour, several single amino acids and their mixtures. Starved sea stars responded to natural food stimulus by rapid rise of metabolic rate, locomotory activity directed towards signal source, cessation of movement after reaching it and initiation of feeding. All single amino acids that were tested were detected by experimental animals, although there were marked differences in the sea stars reaction to them. Amino acids with narrow and broad scope of influence were distinguished, with glutamic acid being the most potent sea star stimulant. It was also found that the same sea star reaction (e.g. metabolic rate increase or locomotory activity) can be caused by several different amino acids. The effects of amino acid mixtures were significantly stronger than that of single amino acids, with >80% of animals reaching signal source. O. validus seems well adapted to using both single and complicated food signals in its foraging behaviour.  相似文献

Mesostoma sp., isolated from different lakes in Brazil, was taken to the laboratory and fed Moina sp. The vertical position of satiated and non-satiated individuals was monitored in 25 cm high columns exposed to natural sunlight. Phototactic responses were studied under standardised experimental conditions.Satiated individuals resided nearer to the bottom than non-satiated Mesostoma. A new astropectinid sea star,Coulonia parva n. sp., is described from the Santonian of the Sierra de Montsech, northern Spain. The single specimen shows part of a rather weathered ventral side. It is characterized by comparatively long arms (R/r approx. 3/1), with one row of actinals reaching far into the arms; inferomarginals on the interbrachial arc have deep fasciolar grooves that are less developed on the arms; there are no larger spines on adambulacrals and probably also on inferomarginals. Based on presence of deep marginal fascioles,C. parva n. sp. is inferred to have shared the capability for self-burial with the relatedC. platyspina Hess &Blake.   相似文献

When captured by predators, the tadpoles of some species of frogs and toads may release an alarm substance that alters the behaviour of conspecifics. Such ‘alarm response’ behaviour has been proposed as a potential mechanism whereby related conspecifics may ‘warn’ relatives of a predator's presence and thus, improve their inclusive fitness. We examined predator avoidance and alarm response behaviour in tadpoles of the Cascades frog (Rana cascadae) and tested whether such behaviour is influenced by kinship factors. Tadpoles reduced activity when in the presence of a predatory newt (Taricha granulosa). Individuals in sibling groups were more active than both solitary tadpoles and individuals in mixed groups of siblings and nonsiblings. However, we found no evidence of an alarm response in R. cascadae. Behaviour of tadpoles in groups exposed only to predators was not different from that of tadpoles in groups exposed to predators plus crushed conspecifics. Tadpoles in groups exposed to crushed tadpoles were as active as tadpoles in groups exposed to water controls, and some test individuals fed upon the dead tadpoles. Thus, while R. cascadae tadpoles reduce activity in response to newt predators, crushed tadpoles appear to initiate a feeding response rather than an alarm response as has been previously proposed.  相似文献

Ophiodaphne formata is a conspicuously dimorphic ophiuroid; the disk diameters are approximately 1 mm for males and 5 mm for females. The dwarf male clings to the larger female, with the oral surfaces and bursae of the paired ophiuroids closely appressed. Moreover, the female of each pair adheres aborally to the oral surface of a host sand dollar, Astriclypeus manni. Spawning and external fertilization occur in August, at Tsuruga Bay, Sea of Japan. Development of the dimorphic brittle star O. formata is described for the first time, from spawning through metamorphosis, with special attention to the formation of the skeletal system and the external morphology of early juveniles. Fertilized eggs are about 90 microm in diameter, pale pink, and negatively buoyant. The embryos undergo equal, total, and radial cleavage, and the larval skeleton first forms as a pair of tetraradiate spicules. Larval development proceeds to an 8-armed planktotrophic ophiopluteus, with skeletal elements that consist of a body rod and two recurrent rods. Three weeks after fertilization, all the pluteal arms, except for the postero-lateral arms, are absorbed, and the metamorphosing larvae sink to the bottom. Metamorphosis is completed 21.5 days after fertilization, and the resulting juvenile is pentagonal and approximately 270 microm in diameter. The smallest specimen (480 microm in disk diameter) collected by field sampling exhibited male features on the skeletal plates of the jaw and disk. Sexual dimorphism, the peculiar pairing behavior, and the close relationship with the host sand dollar may have evolved as distinct reproductive characteristics in this ophiuroid with its typical ophiopluteus larvae.  相似文献

Abstract

The attraction of Allodorylaimus americaus towards excised (cut into two pieces) and non-excised (live) individuals of plant parasitic nematodes viz., Tylenchorhynchus mashhoodi, Hoplolaimus indicus, Helicotylenchus indicus, Hirschmanniella oryzae, Xiphinema americanum and Hemicriconemoides mangiferae used as prey were tested in a Petri dish. A. americanus responded positively and significantly to prey kairomones but showed variation in their individual behaviour. A. americanus was most attracted towards excised individuals of T. mashhoodi. The differential responses of A. americanus towards different prey were attributed to the inert behaviour of the predator, their preference for a particular species of prey, chemical composition, concentration, quality, quantity of prey attractant, formation of minimum perceptible attraction gradient of prey and minimum response threshold of predators. Different factors such as temperature, period of prey incubation, prey density, starvation of predators, agar concentration, and agar thickness governed the attraction responses of the predator. A. americanus responded maximally towards T. mashhoodi, when tested as 5-day starved predators in agar plates containing a 2 mm thick layer of 1% water-agar with 200 prey individuals previously incubated for 16 h at 30°C.  相似文献

The brittle star Taeniaster bohemicus was found in association with the trace fossil Asteriacites lumbricalis in the Upper Ordovi‐cian of central Bohemia. Morphological features of the trace, coupled with spatial interrelationships between trace and body fossils, provide evidence that the brittle star represents the trace‐maker of this Asteriacites. The cubichnial burrows probably represent negative phototaxis among the ophiuroids.  相似文献

In an experiment in which the roots of field-grown tulip were commonly infected with tobacco necrosis virus (TNV), Augusta disease did not develop in the year of infection or when progeny bulbs were grown in the field or glass-house. When tulip bulbs of other stocks, including grades of 11 and 12 cm circumference, were forced, the disease developed sporadically, in some instances as the result of infection with TNV from the soil in which they were planted and in others as a result of infection by bulb-borne virus. The incidence of disease produced by current year infection was increased by warming the plunge bed. Different strains of TNV were obtained from field-grown plants with Augusta disease and different strains of the virus produced the disease when inoculated to tulip. Some, but not all, naturally diseased plants contained satellite virus, which therefore does not cause or prevent disease development. The disease was produced in some plants by TNV transmitted by Olpidium brassicae, but neither a vector nor a non-vector isolate of O. brassicae completed its life cycle in tulip. However, Olpidium-like zoospores were observed in some washings of tulip roots from TNV-infested soils. TNV was not obtained from all tulip plants with necrotic leaf symptoms resembling Augusta disease. Some were infected with tomato bushy stunt virus or cucumber mosaic virus, or with another agent that was transmitted by inoculation of sap to Nicotiana clevelandii and Chenopodium quinoa, and carried by bulbs of up to 11 cm circumference.  相似文献

Summary Regional variation in the intensity of fish predation on tethered brittle stars and crabs was measured at 30–33 m depths in the rocky subtidal zone at seven sites representing coastal and offshore regions of the Gulf of Maine, USA. Analysis of covariance comparing the slopes of brittle star survivorship curves followed by multiple comparisons tests revealed five groupings of sites, with significantly greater predation rates in the two offshore than in the three coastal groups. Brittle stars tethered at the three offshore sites were consumed primarily by cod, Gadus morhua, with 60–100% prey mortality occuring in 2.5 h. In striking contrast, only 6–28% of brittle star prey was consumed in the same amount of time at the four coastal sites, which were dominated by cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus. In several coastal trials, a majority of brittle star prey remained after 24 h. The pattern of higher predation offshore held for rock crabs as well with only 2.7% of tethered crabs consumed (n=36) at coastal sites versus 57.8% of crabs (n=64) consumed at offshore sites. Another important predatory fish, the wolffish, Anarhichas lupus, consumed more tethered crabs than brittle stars. Videos and time-lapse movies indicated that cod and wolffish were significantly more abundant at offshore than at coastal sites. Three hundred years of fishing pressure in New England has severely depleted stocks of at least one important benthic predator, the cod, in coastal waters. We speculate that this human-induced predator removal has lowered predation pressure on crabs and other large mobile epibenthos in deep coastal communities. Transect data indicate that coastal sites with few cod support significantly higher densities of crabs than offshore sites with abundant cod.  相似文献

Species composition, abundance, biomass and spatial distribution pattern of brittle star assemblages of the Kolbeinsey Ridge, north of Iceland, were investigated by analysing seafloor photographs and epibenthic sled catches. Sampling was conducted in July 1992 along a 34 km long cross-ridge transect at 67°55N in depths ranging from 830 to 1100 m. Five brittle star species were found. Only one species, Ophiocten gracilis, occurred with densities of more than 1 ind m–2. Both ridge slopes were characterized by soft bottom habitats, the ophiuroid distribution, however, revealed differences between slopes. Generally, brittle star densities were significantly higher on the eastern slope. There, the highest mean abundance per station of O. gracilis was 497 ind m–2. Except for one station, a distinct patchiness on the 100 m-scale was obvious in the spatial distribution of O. gracilis. Small settling stages with disc diameters <1 mm accounted for up to 98% of the population of O. gracilis near the ridge top, but their abundance share decreased with depth to only 6% on the eastern slope foot. Biomasses of O. gracilis were extrapolated by combining abundances estimated from photographic counts with a size-weight relationship and size frequencies established from sled catches. The highest value (120 mg AFDW m–2) was found on the deep eastern slope where large O. gracilis with disc diameters >4 mm were most abundant. Our findings reflect a cross-ridge gradient in terms of hydrographic regime and, hence, probably pattern of food supply for the benthos.  相似文献

The symbiosis between grasses and endophytic fungi is a common phenomenon and can affect herbivore performance through acquired, chemical plant defence by fungal alkaloids. In laboratory experiments, two species of common grass aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi and Metopolophium dirhodum were tested, in a population experiment (on four plant cultivars) and individually (on one plant cultivar) for the effects of the endophyte, Neotyphodium lolii, that forms symbiotic associations with perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne. In the population experiment that lasted for four aphid generations both aphid species showed decreased population sizes when feeding on each of the four endophyte-infected cultivars. Individuals of R. padi tested individually showed reduced adult life span and fecundity when feeding on infected plants. Individuals of M. dirhodum showed no response in any of the traits measured. This suggests that R. padi individuals are more sensitive to endophyte infection than M. dirhodum individuals. However, all infected grass cultivars reduced population sizes of both aphid species over four generations. Therefore, fungal endophytes can reduce populations of aphid herbivores independent of plant cultivars.  相似文献

The primarily benthic megalopa larvae of Callinectes sapidus and Macropipus holsatus swim upwards for a short distance from the bottom when subjected to pressure increased above ambient values, particularly when illuminated from above. Larvae exposed to stepwise increments of pressure exhibit a threshold in the barokinetic response which is lower in Callinectes (0.4 atm) than in Macropipus (0.8–1.0 atm). Such behaviour would tend to inhibit swimming in surface waters of stratified estuaries where net flow is seawards, but would promote slight upward swimming when on the bottom in deeper water which has a net flow inwards, thus substantiating other evidence that the megalopa is a stage at which recruitment to estuaries takes place. The lower threshold of the barokinetic response in Callinectes may be related to its occurrence in more uniformly shallow estuaries on the south and east coasts of N. America.

In both species swimming is markedly inhibited after a slight reduction in pressure. Such responses would be of value to larvae running the risk of being washed ashore in surf Sudden reductions in pressure by surf action would induce sinking into the undertow which would carry larvae offshore into deeper water.  相似文献
