Substantial numbers of the very small carybdeid jellyfish, Carybdea sivickisi, have been observed feeding actively by divers in the vicinity of fringing coral reefs. During the day specimens were seen in close association with the substrate and with sessile macroalgae. They appeared able to adhere to substrates by contact with an area on the aboral surface of the bell. Individuals maintained in the laboratory showed the same adhering ability. The adhesive organs correspond to 4 areas of raised secretory epithelium on the aboral surface.Following capture, one isolated specimen extruded a long gelatinous strand containing several thousand developing embryos and numerous functional nematocysts. The embryos developed into characteristic cubozoan planulae, which were able to attach themselves temporarily to substrates by means of nematocysts. After 4 days of free swimming, planulae began to attach permanently and to develop into sessile polyps with 3 or 4 tentacles, each armed with a single stenotele. The species displays sexual dimorphism and evidence for spermatophore formation and transfer which parallel that reported for Tripedalia cystophora. The presence of sperm-storage sacs in both sexes, the production of an embryo mass, the adhering behaviour and an apparent association with algal substrates are among features apparently unique to the species.  相似文献

The composition of local ecological communities is determined by the members of the regional community that are able to survive the abiotic and biotic conditions of a local ecosystem. Anthropogenic activities since the industrial revolution have increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations, which have in turn decreased ocean pH and altered carbonate ion concentrations: so called ocean acidification (OA). Single‐species experiments have shown how OA can dramatically affect zooplankton development, physiology and skeletal mineralization status, potentially reducing their defensive function and altering their predatory and antipredatory behaviors. This means that increased OA may indirectly alter the biotic conditions by modifying trophic interactions. We investigated how OA affects the impact of a cubozoan predator on their zooplankton prey, predominantly Copepoda, Pleocyemata, Dendrobranchiata, and Amphipoda. Experimental conditions were set at either current (pCO2 370 μatm) or end‐of‐the‐century OA (pCO2 1,100 μatm) scenarios, crossed in an orthogonal experimental design with the presence/absence of the cubozoan predator Carybdea rastoni. The combined effects of exposure to OA and predation by C. rastoni caused greater shifts in community structure, and greater reductions in the abundance of key taxa than would be predicted from combining the effect of each stressor in isolation. Specifically, we show that in the combined presence of OA and a cubozoan predator, populations of the most abundant member of the zooplankton community (calanoid copepods) were reduced 27% more than it would be predicted based on the effects of these stressors in isolation, suggesting that OA increases the susceptibility of plankton to predation. Our results indicate that the ecological consequences of OA may be greater than predicted from single‐species experiments, and highlight the need to understand future marine global change from a community perspective.  相似文献

Synopsis Studies on the ontogeny of behaviour in fish have seldom considered the adaptive significance of the order of appearance of the behaviours. Results of laboratory studies and field observations on the ontogeny of feeding, predator-avoidance, and agonistic behaviour in largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, rock bass, Ambloplites rupestris, and pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus, young indicate that the order of appearance of the various behavioural systems enhances the survival of the young. In the laboratory, all species spend significantly more time feeding during the first weeks of free-swimming than the later weeks. During a corresponding period in the field the young are either occupying an offshore area low in predators (rock bass, pumpkinseed) or are being guarded by a parent (largemouth bass); thus the risk of predation is low. When the young are in a predator-rich environment (inshore) both the predator-avoidance response and agonistic behaviour are well developed. Agonistic behaviour is the last to appear and may serve to disperse the young. Dispersal may relate to the feeding mode of the various species and may also reduce the probability of predation. It is apparent that the sequential onsets of the behavioural systems are in concert with ecological events and selective pressures confronting centarchid young.  相似文献

Field experiments with foraging parasitoids are essential to validate the conclusions from laboratory studies and to interpret differences in searching and host selection behaviour of parasitoid species. Furthermore, field experiments can indicate whether the parameters measured in the laboratory are relevant to elucidation of the ecological processes under study, such as adaptation or species interactions. In previous extensive laboratory studies we studied plant- and host-searching behaviour, host acceptance, host suitability; host plant preference, and learning of two congeneric parasitoids of Pieris caterpillars: the generalist Cotesia glomerata, which has been reported to attack several Pieridae species, and C. rubecula, a specialist of the small cabbage white Pieris rapae. In the present field study our aim was to verify the importance of these previous laboratory findings for explaining the performance of these two species in the field. We investigated experimentally whether parasitism on three Pieris species varied with parasitoid species and with food plant of the caterpillars. We exposed different types of host plants, infested with different Pieris species, to parasitism by natural populations of Cotesia species, by setting the experimental plants out in Brussels sprouts cabbage fields. Furthermore we made direct observations of parasitoid foraging in the field. In general, the field results confirmed our predictions on the range of host plant and host species used in the field. The two Cotesia species appear to coexist through niche segregation, since C. glomerata was mainly recovered from P. brassicae and C. rubecula from P. rapae. Although C. glomerata is a generalist at the species level, it can be a specialist at the population level under certain ecological circumstances. Our study shows the importance of variation in host plant attraction and host species acceptance in restricting host plant and host diet in the field. Furthermore the results suggest that, at least in the Netherlands, specialisation of C. glomerata on P. brassicae may occur as a result of C. rubecula outcompeting C. glomerata in P. rapae larvae. Abstract

Cocalus gibbosus was studied in the field in Queensland and in the laboratory. This is the first behavioural study of a species from the spartaeine genus Cocalus. C. gibbosus often omitted elements which are usually present in the predatory sequences of typical salticids and tended to lunge at prey from close range rather than leap from afar. Experiments showed that C. gibbosus prefers moths to other prey. In nature, C. gibbosus moulted and oviposited on silk sheets spun against tree trunks, and in the laboratory on sides of cages or blocks of wood, but this species never built an enclosing nest like typical salticids nor a large prey-catching web like some other spartaeines. C. gibbosus stalked across alien webs to catch spiders and insects, but it did not make vibratory signals. It did not stick to cribellate or ecribellate glue on alien webs. The behaviour of C. gibbosus is compared to that of other spartaeine salticids.  相似文献

The interplay of abiotic factors and competition has a long history in ecology, although there are very few studies on the interaction of salinity and competition in fish. Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) are among the most invasive fish worldwide, with well documented ecological impacts on several taxa such as amphibians and small native fish. It has been previously hypothesized, based on field observations, that salinity limits the invasive success of mosquitofish and provides a competitive refuge for Mediterranean cyprinodonts. We experimentally tested this hypothesis by examining the agonistic behaviour and food competition between mosquitofish and an endangered native cyprinodont (Aphanius fasciatus) at three salinities (0, 15, 25‰). Intraspecific aggressive behaviour for both species was not significantly affected by salinity. As salinity increased, mosquitofish decreased their aggressive behaviour towards cyprinodonts and captured less prey. In contrast, the cyprinodonts did not change their behaviour with different salinity treatments, with the possible exception of increased defensive acts in higher salinities, but captured more prey with increasing salinity because of the reduced efficiency of mosquitofish. Our study confirms previous field observations that salinity limits the invasive success of mosquitofish and provides one of the few experimental demonstrations that it may mediate behavioural and competitive interactions between fish species. Condition-specific competition of mosquitofish might be expected with other species and ecosystems worldwide and illustrates the importance of integrating biotic and abiotic factors in the study of interspecific interactions.  相似文献

Field and laboratory experiments were set up to obtain data on the reasons for different habitat selection of Enallagma cyathigerum and Platycnemis pennipes. (1) Rearing of larvae in two different ponds showed that while P. pennipes was not able to survive conditions of low oxygen content, 50% of the E. cyathigerum larvae survived. (2) In field predation experiments with sticklebacks and dragonflies as predators, we found that E. cyathigerum suffered highest predation by the fish. In P. pennipes, mortality was highest with Anax imperator. (3) Experiments regarding larval behaviour showed that E. cyathigerum was generally more active and had higher foraging success than P. pennipes. Both species reduced activity in the presence of fish, but E. cyathigerum did so to a minor extent. In contrast to P. pennipes, E. cyathigerum showed escaping behaviour. (4) In the laboratory, the growth of E. cyathigerum was faster than that of P. pennipes.  相似文献

The behaviour of the three mediterranean benthic fish Tripterygion tripteronotus, T. xanthosoma, and T. melanurus is described from observations in the field and observations on captive animals. The ♂♂ defend a territory only during the reproductive season; ♀♀ do not defend a territory. At the height of the breeding season, a male T. tripteronotus on average spawns with four ♀♀ Per day. The ♂ defends the territory against egg predators and cleans the eggs. ♀♀ spawn repeatedly during a spawning season. A spawning pair of T. tripteronotus frequently attracts conspecifics. The majority of these “satellites” are small, sexually mature ♂♂, which do not own a territory themselves. The reproductive strategies of the two types of ♂♂ (territorial ♂♂ and satellite ♂♂) and of the ♀♀ are discussed. On the basis of ethological, morphological, and palaegeographic data the evolution of the eastern-atlantic and mediterranean Tripterygiidae is reconstructed. A bibliography of the literature on eastern-atlantic and mediterranean Tripterygiidae is given. As in their morphology and anatomy, benthic fish show convergent adaptations in their behaviour. Some of these are pointed out and discussed.  相似文献

Summary The ectodermal cell layer in the tentacles of the cubozoan polypCarybdea marsupialis contains four types of cells (types 1–4) bearing specialized cilia. Epitheliomuscular cells (type 1) are characterized by motile cilia with dynein-decorated axonemes. 200 nm long extramembranous filaments of unknown function are restricted to a belt-like region distal to the transition zone. Up to 40 rn long rigid cilia formed by a slender epithelial cell type (type 2) are surrounded by rings of short microvilli. The axonemes of these cilia are composed of incomplete microtubules and lack dynein. Microvilli and cilia are linked by intermembrane connectors. Microtubuledoublets and ciliary membrane are interconnected by microtubule-associated cross-bridges only within this contact region. At the tip of each tentacle a single nematocyte (type 3) is surrounded by 7–10 accessory cells (type 4). These both cell types are equipped with similar cilium-stereovilli-complexes consisting of a cone-like arrangement of stereovilli and a modified cilium. The axonemal modifications of the cilium, its interconnections with the surrounding stereovilli and the linkages between ciliary axoneme and ciliary membrane are similar to those known from the cnidocil-complexes of hydrozoons and other epithelial mechanosensitive cells of the collar-receptor type. Our data indicate that besides the nematocyte two other types of mechanosensory cells (types 2 and 4) are integrated in the ectodermal cell layer ofCarybdea which possibly affect the triggering mechanism of nematocyst discharge.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of a Japanese loach,Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was experimentally analyzed. From observations the behaviour patterns were described. The adult fish responded to a piece of thread soaked with filteredTubifex homogenate (Tubifex solution) and showed feeding behaviour. But they ignored an unsoaked piece of thread. LivingTubifex kept in a glass cell failed to elicit feeding behaviour in the fish. A gauze-covered vessel withTubifex solution buried in the sand substrate released feeding behaviour in fish in its vicinity. It follows that the feeding behaviour of this fish is induced by some chemical stimuli. WhenTubifex solution was introduced at the central area of the plastic vessel with a fish, the fish suddenly started the Feeding-crawl and showed Gulp which was composed of Dig and Twist. Using sand particles, it was shown that intake of materials into the digestive tract occurs only at the moment of Twist and not any other time. The standard feeding patterns ofMisgurnus anguillicaudatus are thus quick inhalation of organic matter together with substrate, occurring at the moment of Twist, which is released at the place where the fish received the appropriate chemical stimuli.Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is regarded as a typical “detritus feeder”.  相似文献

The sub‐lethal effects of catch‐and‐release angling have been poorly studied because of the difficulties in monitoring physiological parameters in free‐swimming fish. Laboratory studies provide the opportunity to examine sub‐lethal effects in controlled environments, but do not incorporate site‐specific characteristics. In this study we angled free‐swimming largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) equipped with heart rate transmitters to exhaustion using rod and reel, and exposed fish to air for 30 s. Experiments were repeated at four water temperatures (13, 17, 21, and 25°C). These field data were compared with published findings from largemouth bass collected at the same water temperatures in a controlled laboratory setting using Doppler flow probes. Field collected heart rate data increased with increasing water temperatures (Q10 values 1.30–1.37). Pre‐disturbance heart rates were ~30% higher for free‐swimming fish in the field than previously collected laboratory data at the same water temperatures. Fish angled in the field exhausted ~40% more rapidly than fish chased in the laboratory. Maximal heart rate was ~15% higher for free‐swimming fish in the field than for data collected from laboratory restrained fish, but scope for heart rate was reduced by up to 20% in the field, especially at higher water temperatures. Heart rate in free‐swimming fish was highly variable at all times, obscuring clear recovery patterns. Conversely, laboratory cardiac parameters exhibited less variable patterns, peaking clearly following disturbances and recovering in about 135 min, independent of water temperature. Based upon these findings, we suggest that comprehensive studies incorporating both laboratory and field experiments are needed for truly understanding the effect of catch‐and‐release angling on fish.  相似文献

The social behaviour of individually identified squids was observed over a period of 4 mo. Squids were reared in captivity and maintained in a shoal of up to 18 animals. Distances between animals averaged 1.6 body lengths, similar to the 1.2 body lengths of wild teleost fish schools. Smaller animals schooled less frequently and were found at the periphery, and familiar and unfamiliar animals shoaled together. Eighty-six apparent reproductive events were observed. This species of squid, Sepioteuthis lessoniana, is not sexually dimorphic to the human eye and male squids copulated with both males and females but they directed their attention disproportionately towards females. Most copulations occurred more than a month before spawning, lasted only a few seconds and, unlike field observations on spawning grounds, were not followed by mate-guarding. Two body patterns are described that were used consistently in social interactions by both males and females; these patterns were both associated with reproductive behaviour but their exact function was unclear. A sister species, Sepioteuthis sepioidea, has been described as showing complex social behaviour; in S. lessoniana, no evidence for such behaviour was seen.  相似文献

The primary goal of this study was to demonstrate, from field observations and laboratory experiments, some key trophic roles of benthic ctenophores as predators and prey in subtropical communities. We examined individuals of two benthic platyctenid species: Coeloplana waltoni, a minute epibiont on octocorals in exposed, open‐water settings; and Vallicula multiformis, an associate of calm‐water biofouling communities and floating Sargassum spp. Laboratory observations of individuals of both ctenophore species revealed frequent capture and ingestion of diverse zooplankton taxa, especially crustaceans. Laboratory predation trials demonstrated the capture of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) eggs and larvae by both ctenophore species. Dolphinfish eggs and larvae larger than individuals of C. waltoni were captured but not ingested during 2‐h trial periods. These prey items were sometimes purloined and ingested by polyps of the ctenophore's octocoral host. Ingestion of dolphinfish eggs and larvae by individuals of C. waltoni was observed, however, after longer periods of exposure to prey. In predation trials, dolphinfish eggs and larvae were both captured and ingested by larger individuals of the ctenophore species V. multiformis. Field and laboratory observations revealed diverse invertebrate and fish taxa that prey on both ctenophore species. In the laboratory, the mean daily per capita consumption of individuals of C. waltoni by a pomacanthid fish ranged 0.5–2.8 individuals, and ranged 2.6–3.6 individuals for predation by an ovulid mollusc. Field population densities of these predators ranged 0.1–0.7 individuals per m2 for the pomacanthid, and 0.2–1.1 individuals per m2 for the mollusc. Laboratory feeding observations demonstrated frequent consumption of individuals of V. multiformis by a sea anemone, and by three species of brachyuran crabs. Field observations revealed eight fishes that probably feed incidentally on individuals of V. multiformis. These findings add to the limited knowledge base of predator–prey dynamics in both C. waltoni and V. multiformis.  相似文献

The seasonal diel behaviour of age 1+ steelhead from Coast and Cascade Range streams in Oregon was examined in the field and in laboratory streams. During the summer, fish from both areas were active during the day in natural streams: they held position in the water column in moderate velocities and depths. At night, fish were in slower water, closer to the bottom above smaller substrates. In winter, diel behaviour differed between the two groups. Coastal fish exhibited behaviour similar to that observed in the summer. Cascade Range fish were not observed during the day, but were found at night, holding positions close to the bottom in slower water. In laboratory streams, fish from both regions were subjected to a decreasing temperature regime from 16°C to 2°C. Use of cover for concealment during the day was negatively correlated with water temperatures for both groups. However, the shelter-seeking response to declining water temperatures was significantly greater for Cascade fish than it was for coastal fish. Field and laboratory observations of diel behaviour support the hypothesis that steelhead from the two geographic regions have different adaptive strategies for winter conditions and that these differences, because they persisted even in laboratory conditions, are probably genetically based.  相似文献

The ecology of cubozoans is poorly understood and there are few quantitative studies on their distribution patterns. Sampling was designed to test first for variation in abundance with distance across the continental shelf in waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Second, we tested for the possible influence of islands versus submerged reefs on the abundances of cubozoan jellyfishes. Jellyfishes were collected after attraction to tethered night lights. Additional sampling focused on turbid near-shore waters. Carybdeid jellyfishes were found at mainland, inner, and mid-shelf reefs during summers between 2007 and 2010. No cubozoan medusae were found at outer reef sites. Copula sivickisi and Carukia barnesi were more abundant near reefs with islands than at fully submerged reefs. There was no evidence of lunar periodicity in abundance for these cubozoan taxa. Chironex fleckeri medusae were only found close to shore near the mainland, but they were rarely observed when riverine runoff was high. All taxa were characterized by high spatial and temporal variation and there was some evidence for small populations at spatial scales of less than one kilometer. “Blooms” and related intensity of predation and risk to humans are most likely at small spatial scales.  相似文献

Synopsis The field component of this study compared feeding preferences of Umbra limi with available resources in the environment. The mudminnows preferred benthic coleopterans, anisopterans, and amphipods while avoiding planktonic and other benthic food types. The laboratory component tested for possible switching behaviour by offering different ratios of two food types (Enchytraeus worms and Culex larvae). Both components indicated a benthic feeding preference in mudminnows. Although preferences were variable across individuals, switching did not occur, a result consistent with recent predictions on predatory behaviour. Feeding patterns reflected individual differences among fish, runs of feeding on one food type, and a constancy in the total number of the two food types eaten.  相似文献

A major driving force to mechanistic studies of barnacle gregarious settlement is to contribute to an understanding of observed patterns of settlement in nature. In particular, how cyprids perceive adult conspecifics and how they discriminate between conspecific and allospecific barnacles are questions which have taxed researchers for nearly 50 years. The putative, active component of adult barnacles to which the cyprids respond has long been known to be a glycoprotein, referred to here as the settlement‐inducing protein complex (SIPC). The present study examines the discriminatory abilities of laboratory‐reared Balanus amphitrite and wild Semibalanus balanoides cyprids at settlement. Using a recently developed nitrocellulose membrane‐choice settlement assay, laboratory studies revealed that both species settled at a significantly higher rate on regions of membrane on which crude conspecific SIPC had been adsorbed compared to untreated regions. Moreover, when offered a choice between conspecific and allospecific SIPC, a trend to greater settlement on the conspecific regions was observed. The membrane assay was also evaluated in field trials using real‐time video footage of cyprid searching behaviour. Of 211 S. balanoides cyprids recorded during exploratory behaviour, only one settled. Exploratory behaviour was, however, clearly associated with regions of the membrane treated with either conspecific or allospecific (B. Amphitrite) SIPC compared to untreated regions. These results are generally in accord with previous reports on the discriminatory abilities of barnacle cyprids and suggest that the membrane assay may be usefully applied to field studies of settlement behaviour.  相似文献

Summary Field observations suggested that benthivorous fish, causing bioturbation, are able to effect the food availability for predacious water mites feeding on bottom dwelling chironomid larvae. This hypothesis was tested in the laboratory. In an undisturbed situation the predation rate exercised by the water mites on the tube dwelling chironomid Cladotanytarsus mancus was very low. However, when the sediment was disturbed, the predation rate increased substantially. The relevance of this for the field situation is discussed.  相似文献

The efficacy and sub‐lethal consequences of single and double tagging European catfish Silurus glanis with Petersen disc and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags were examined in short (laboratory) and longer‐term (field) experiments. Tag retention in the laboratory was 100%, with normal behaviour (i.e. feeding) in all fish returning within 36 h. In the field, 65 of 120 tagged S. glanis were recaptured from five small study ponds, with 85% retaining their PIT tags, though recapture rates and tagging efficacy were highly variable amongst locations. This is consistent with literature for other fishes, suggesting that tagging efficiency is variable across species and largely context dependent (fish length, tagging location, habitat).  相似文献
