Abstract

The Changjiang estuary and its adjacent East China Sea (ECS) have been considered as one of the most dynamic areas significantly contributing to elemental exchanges globally. The purpose of this study was to understand the alteration of microbial consortia at the interface of riverine and coastal environments in relation to environmental variations as well as their roles in biogeochemical cycling at this dynamic region. We sampled surface sediment samples at 4 stations from the estuary to coastal regions of the ECS. Along with collections of physicochemical parameters, we sequenced bacterial 16S rRNA genes of clones from each sample. Results showed a distinct transition of bacterial community from typical freshwater sediment phyla (e.g., Betaproteobacteria and Firmicutes) to those commonly inhabited in saline environments (e.g., Deltaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria). The bacterial group at the transition zone characterized by high accumulation of organic matters and intense mixing of riverine and coastal waters was most diverse. Bacterial community structures at two ECS stations showed a similar pattern but contained different dominant taxa, shifting from Deltaproteobacteria-affiliated sulfate-reducing bacteria at the station closer to the shore to Gammaproteobacteria-affiliated nitrate-reducing bacteria further offshore. It suggested that the sedimentary bacterial community structure was related to salinity, sediment type, and substrate availability and composition.  相似文献

Isotopic, biogeochemical and ecological structure can provide a new dimension for understanding material flows, and the simultaneous function and structure of an ecosystem. Distributions ofδ 13C andδ 15N for biogenic substances in the Nanakita river estuary involving Gamo lagoon in Japan were investigated to construct isotope biogeochemical and ecological structure for assessing fate and transfer of organic matter, and food web structure. The isotopic framework of the ecosystem was successfully described in aδ 15N–δ 13C map. In this estuary the variations of isotope ratios of biogenic substances were clearly explained by the mixing of land-derived organic matter, and marine-derived organic matter. A trophic-level effect of15N enrichment was clearly observed. Organisms were classified into three groups depending upon the contribution of land-derived organic matter in a food chain. Almost all biota except mollusca in the lagoon depend on organic matter of marine origin. The contributions of both land and marine organic matter were comparable for mollusca in the lagoon.  相似文献

The microbial communities of the estuarine zone and the mixing zone of river and lake waters in the Selenga River estuary were studied using the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method. The microorganisms belonging to the phylogenetic group Gammaproteobacteria were found to predominate in the river estuary, constituting up to 17% of the total bacterial community. Among cultivable microorganisms, organotrophic bacteria were predominant (2040 CFU/ml) in this zone, which results in high rates of microbial production (6.0 μg C/(l day). The microbial community structure changed with distance from the river estuary; representatives of the Alpha-, Beta-, and Gammaproteobacteria were present in equal proportions; psychrotolerant and oligotrophic bacteria were numerous. The rate of heterotrophic carbon dioxide assimilation decreased to 3.8 μg C/(l day). At 5–7 km from the river estuary, where the hydrologic, physical, and chemical conditions are similar to those of lake waters, members of the Betaproteobacteria, which are typical of the open waters of Lake Baikal, are the major representatives of planktonic microorganisms.  相似文献

Downstream from metropolitan Paris (France), a large amount of ammonium is discharged into the Seine River by the effluents of the wastewater treatment plant at Achères. To assess the extent of nitrification and denitrification in the water column, concentrations and isotopic compositions of ammonium (δ15N–NH4+) and nitrate (δ15N–NO3, δ18O–NO3) were measured during summer low-flow conditions along the lower Seine and its estuary. The results indicated that most of the ammonium released from the wastewater treatment plant is nitrified in the lower Seine River and its upper estuary, but there was no evidence for water-column denitrification. In the lower part of the estuary, however, concentration and isotopic data for nitrate were not consistent with simple mixing between riverine and marine nitrate. A significant departure of the nitrate isotopic composition from what would be expected from simple mixing of freshwater and marine nitrates suggested coupled nitrification and denitrification in the water, in spite of the apparent conservative behavior of nitrate. Denitrification rates of approximately 0.02 mg N/L/h were estimated for this part of the estuary.  相似文献

【目的】揭示胶州湾典型污染海域半知菌群体结构多样性动态变化与生境的关系。【方法】根据以往对近岸污染调查记录,分别确定胶州湾海泊河、李村河入海口为中度、重度污染采样站位,石老人潮间为轻度污染对照站位,利用PCR-DGGE指纹图谱方法,研究该生境半知菌群体结构多样性季节动态变化与污染的关系。【结果】结果证明,污染指标除总氮含量外,其他各项指标含量在三站位的变化趋势为石老人潮间带最低,海泊河居中,李村河含量最高;与石老人站位相比,海泊河、李村河站位污染指标在四季变化较显著。首次证明在重金属和氮磷严重超标的海域,仍存在数量和种类较多的半知菌。PCR-DGGE指纹图谱结果显示,同一站位相似污染程度采样点之间DGGE指纹图谱比较一致,不同站位、不同季节之间指纹图谱存在明显的差异。优势条带割胶测序分析显示,3个站位存在大量的不可培养真菌,青霉属为半知菌优势种,重度污染的李村河入海口除半知菌外,存在较大量的阿米巴虫、腐霉等动物病原菌。【结论】污染海域的半知菌群体结构与生境污染程度及季节具有较密切的联系。  相似文献

Summary

Two incidences of mass mortality of fish were recorded in two saline waterbodies (Swartvlei estuary and Rondevlei) in the Wilderness National Park. Species affected were the Knysna seahorse (Hippocampus capensis) and longsnout pipefish (Syngnathus acus) in the Swartvlei estuary, and Cape stumpnose (Rhabdosargus holubi) and white steenbras (Lithognathus lithognathus) in Rondevlei. Comparison of water quality parameters during fish mortalities to past ranges and reported species tolerances indicated that the probable causes for the mortalities were high water temperature in the Swartvlei estuary, and low dissolved oxygen concentration in Rondevlei.  相似文献

Summary

The Mhlathuze estuary in its present form was established during construction of the Richards Bay harbour during the early 1970s. This paper summarises available data on the zooplankton community as part of a study on the freshwater requirements of the estuary. The zooplankton community indicates a strong marine influence. The large tidal exchange prevents the establishment of a stable estuarine zooplankton community. The possible influences of changes in freshwater input are discussed.  相似文献

Summary

The ocypodid genus Paratylodiplax was described in 1974 and contains four species, three of which are endemic to southern Africa where they form an important component of the estuarine benthic fauna. However, very little is known about the biology and ecology of the genus, with discrepancies existing between the commonly quoted distributions and actual records of the species. This comment outlines the current taxonomic status of the genus and attempts to resolve the discrepancies in the distributions of the southern African species Paratylodiplax blephariskios has been recorded from the Morrumbene estuary in Mozambique to the Mngazana estuary in the eastern Cape, while the distributions of P. algoensis and P. edwardsii are given as being from the Mngazana to the Eerste estuary and Langebaan Lagoon in the western Cape respectively.  相似文献

Stand spatial structure is a significant factor in forest processes that regulates growth and promotes sustainability. Close-to-nature forest management (CNFM), structure-based forest management (SBFM), and secondary forest comprehensive silvicuture (SFCS) are three forest management methods that have been promoted in China; however, how stand spatial structure is impacted by the different forest managements remains unclear. Understanding stand spatial structure characteristics in a forest under different forest managements is critical for forest management. In this study, we analysed and compared the spatial structure characteristics within a natural Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata forest under CNFM, SBFM, SFCS, and unmanaged control before tending, after tending and four years after tending using the three spatial structure parameters of uniform angle index, mingling, and dominance.Results(1) The SBFM and SFCS produced the random distribution pattern of a stand, and they could maintain a random distribution four years after tending. The SBFM significantly increased the degree of mixing in the forest, and the degree of mixing four years after tending was still significantly higher than before tending. (2) The SBFM was the only forest management method that could significantly reduce the proportion of micro-structures (non-randomly distributed trees with a low degree of mixing and inferior trees with a low degree of mixing) immediately, and the proportion of micro-structures after four years of tending was still significantly lower than before tending. (3) These three forest management methods cannot significantly increase the proportion of micro-structures (randomly distributed trees with a high degree of mixing and dominant trees with a high degree of mixing) immediately, while only when using the SBFM was the proportion of these after four years of tending significantly higher than before tending.ConclusionsCompared with other forest management methods, the SBFM can achieve the goal of optimizing the spatial structure of forests, which is conducive to the growth of trees and the improvement of forest stand productivity.  相似文献

Summary

Water quality forms an integral component of the determination of the Ecological Reserve of a water resource. This paper presents the available historical and current information on the water quality of the Mhlathuze estuary, The data were assessed in order to determine the forcing factors that characterise the water quality of Mhlathuze estuary. These factors were used in conjunction with a previously-developed water quality indexing system to assign a water quality integrity class to the Mhlathuze estuary. Three reaches of the estuary were classified as being largely natural with few modifications. Major issues relating to water quality data gaps were identified. By addressing these issues an integrity class could in future be assigned with greater confidence.  相似文献

The Scheldt river drains a densely populated and industrialized area in northern France, western Belgium and the south-west Netherlands. Mineralization of the high organic load carried by the river leads to oxygen depletion in the water column and high concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. Upon estuarine mixing, dissolved oxygen concentrations are gradually restored due to reaeration and dilution with sea water. The longitudinal redox gradient present in the Scheldt estuary strongly affects the geochemistry of nutrients. Dissolved nutrients in the water column and dissolved nitrogen species in sediment porewaters were determined for a typical summer and winter situation. Water column concentration-salinity plots showed conservative behaviour of dissolved Si during winter. During summer (and spring) dissolved Si may be completely removed from solution due to uptake by diatoms. The geochemistry of phosphorus was governed by inorganic and biological processes. The behaviour of nitrogen was controlled by denitrification in the anoxic fluvial estuary, followed by nitrification in the upper estuary (prior to oxygen regeneration). In addition, nitrogen was taken up during phytoplankton blooms in the lower estuary. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen species in porewaters from the upper 20 cm of sediments were obtained from a subtidal site in the middle of the lower estuary. Dissolved nutrient concentrations were low in the upper 10–15 cm of the sandy and organic poor (<1% POC) sediments mainly as a result of strong sediment mixing. The porewater profiles of ammonium and nitrate were evaluated quantitatively, using a one-dimensional steady-state diagenetic model. This coupled ammonium-nitrate model showed ammonification of organic matter to be restricted to the upper 4 to 7 cm of the sediments. Total nitrification ranged from 3.7–18.1 mmol m?2 d?1, converting all ammonium produced by ammonification. The net balance between nitrification and denitrification depended on the season. Nitrate was released from the sediments during winter but is taken up from the water column during summer. These results are in good agreement with data obtained from the independently calibrated water column model for the Scheldt Estuary (VAN GILSet al., 1993).  相似文献

Summary

An analysis of covariance performed on chlorophyll a distribution data from the Sundays River estuary identified five persistent water masses with significantly different chlorophyll a contents. These corresponded to different hydrodynamic regions within the estuary. The relationship between salinity and chlorophyll a was used to identify a transition zone between the low-salinity upper estuary and the brackish riverine inflow. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from <6 μg 1?1 near the mouth to >100 μg 1?1 in the middle and upper reaches. High variance of chlorophyll a data in this region was the result of temporal chlorophyll a fluctuations in two time scales. The first related to the daily ebb/tide and the second to the lunar spring/neap tidal cycle. Unlike its importance in larger and deeper estuaries, light played only a minor role in the horizontal distribution of chlorophyll a. The presence of a chlorophyll a maximum in the turbid low salinity region is explained in terms of the relatively constant photic depth/mixed depth ratio along the estuary and the high residence time of water in this region.  相似文献

Estuarine organisms grow in highly heterogeneous habitats, and their genetic differentiation is driven by selective and neutral processes as well as population colonization history. However, the relative importance of the processes that underlie genetic structure is still puzzling. Scirpus mariqueter is a perennial grass almost limited in the Changjiang River estuary and its adjacent Qiantang River estuary. Here, using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), a moderate‐high level of genetic differentiation among populations (range FST: 0.0310–0.3325) was showed despite large ongoing dispersal. FLOCK assigned all individuals to 13 clusters and revealed a complex genetic structure. Some genetic clusters were limited in peripheries compared with very mixing constitution in center populations, suggesting local adaptation was more likely to occur in peripheral populations. 21 candidate outliers under positive selection were detected, and further, the differentiation patterns correlated with geographic distance, salinity difference, and colonization history were analyzed with or without the outliers. Combined results of AMOVA and IBD based on different dataset, it was found that the effects of geographic distance and population colonization history on isolation seemed to be promoted by divergent selection. However, none‐liner IBE pattern indicates the effects of salinity were overwhelmed by spatial distance or other ecological processes in certain areas and also suggests that salinity was not the only selective factor driving population differentiation. These results together indicate that geographic distance, salinity difference, and colonization history co‐contributed in shaping the genetic structure of S. mariqueter and that their relative importance was correlated with spatial scale and environment gradient.  相似文献

The Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, is among the most pervasive invasive species in freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Our objective was to study C. fluminea’s functional response in terms of feeding behavior and food selectivity, using the natural variation in organic matter (OM) sources that occur in estuarine environments. Using C and N stable isotopes, we identified and quantified the contribution of different OM sources supporting the production of C. fluminea along the salinity gradient occupied in the Minho River estuary (NW-Iberian Peninsula, Europe), where this species presently dominates the benthic macrofauna biomass. We observed a pronounced shift in the quality of OM available for C. fluminea along the estuarine mixing zone. Stable isotope analysis, POM C/N, and phytoplankton contribution estimates based on C:Chl a revealed that POM was largely comprised of terrestrial-derived OM in tidal freshwater stations (TFW) and was increasingly comprised of phytoplankton, a more palatable food source, towards the polyhaline estuary. A similar shift in the isotopic composition along the estuarine mixing zone was observed in C. fluminea, suggesting a shift in food resources. Accordingly, based on a Bayesian stable isotope mixing model, there was an upstream–downstream counter gradient in the contribution to C. fluminea biomass from terrestrial-derived OM (41–64 % in TFW) and phytoplankton (29–55 % in the brackish estuary). Although the majority of the food sources identified were filtered from the water column (70–80 %), reliance on sediment OM and microphytobenthos provided evidence for deposit feeding by C. fluminea. We conclude that C. fluminea has the ability to adapt to environments with low food quality because it can consume terrestrial-derived OM. This can be a competitive adaptation in systems with perennial low food quality such as the Minho River estuary. Moreover, its ability to couple benthic and pelagic environments and terrestrial ecosystems demonstrates a strong potential to alter food web flows in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The false mussel Mytilopsis adamsi, originally described from the Pacific coast of Panama, is reported for the first time as an introduced species in the Urías estuary and an adjacent shrimp farm, on the Pacific coasts of Mexico. In the 19th century, this species was transported from the Pacific coast of Panama, reaching the Indo-Pacific Ocean, but it had not been previously reported in other coasts of the American Pacific. Its recent and irregular presence in this small estuary near shore the Mazatlán harbor and an adjacent shrimp farm suggests that the species was introduced into the area but it cannot still be considered as a harmful invader. The presence of the species in the shrimp farm may indicate that it was introduced along with shrimp stocks from Central America, although its passive transportation to the estuary via ballast water or attached to hulls is not discounted.  相似文献

Summary

The infaunal macrobenthic community of the St Lucia estuary has been exposed to natural disturbance in the form of salinity fluctuations arising from floods and hypersaline conditions, and human-induced interference arising from dredging and beam trawling. The responses of the benthos to these disturbances have been recorded between 1983 and 1994 and are discussed in the light of management options for the estuary. A simple benthic sampling strategy is suggested to monitor the important benthic species.  相似文献

Abstract

Diatoms, which are early autotrophic colonisers, are an important constituent of the biofouling community in the marine environment. The effects of substratum and temporal variations on the fouling diatom community structure in a monsoon-influenced tropical estuary were studied. Fibreglass and glass coupons were exposed every month for a period of 4 days and the diatom population sampled at 24 h intervals, over a period of 14 months. The planktonic diatom community structure differed from the biofilm community. Pennate diatoms dominated the biofilms whilst centric diatoms were dominant in the water column. Among the biofilm diatoms, species belonging to the genera Navicula, Amphora, Nitzschia, Pleurosigma and Thalassionema were dominant. On certain occasions, the influence of planktonic blooms was also seen on the biofilm community. A comparative study of biofilms formed on the two substrata revealed significant differences in density and diversity. However species composition was almost constant. In addition to substratum variations, the biofilm diatom community structure also showed significant seasonal variations, which were attributed to physico-chemical and biological changes in both the water and substratum. Temporal variations in the tychopelagic diatoms of the water were also observed to exert an influence on the biofilm diatom community. Variations in diatom communities may determine the functional ecosystem of the benthic environment.  相似文献

Background

Octopus hubbsorum Berry, 1953 is the most important species for commercial fishing in the Mexican Pacific. However, there is a lack of information regarding population structure that could have important management implications. We tested 44 microsatellite loci in O. hubbsorum by cross-amplification from O. bimaculatus.

Methods and results

Genetic diversity and structure was tested over 30 octopus sampled from Santa Cruz de Miramar (Nayarit, México). A total of 11 loci were successfully amplified. All loci were polymorphic with the number of effective alleles ranging from 2.13 to 23.14, while three loci significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. No significant LD was observed between pairs of loci (P?≥?0.05). The application of the new markers in a O. hubbsorum population from Santa Cruz de Miramar Nayarit, México, did not showed Wahlund or isolate breaking effects due to the mixing of distinct populations.

Conclusions

The loci were useful to estimate levels of pairwise relatedness and to discard the presence of recent demographic bottlenecks in the population. We consider that eight microsatellites are adequate from the 11 amplified loci

We investigated the influence of nutrient availability, specifically nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon on growth and community structure of phytoplankton from the Port Adelaide River estuary, South Australia. Two bioassay experiments were conducted. The first, Nutrich1, involved addition of nutrients in vitro to samples of the natural phytoplankton community from a single location in the upper estuary. The second, Nutrich2, involved nutrient addition and incubation of water from five locations in the estuary following inoculation with a `standardised' phytoplankton assemblage derived from laboratory cultures. In Nutrich1, enrichment with silicon led to greatly enhanced phytoplankton biomass due to increased growth of diatoms. Addition of nitrogen or phosphorus had little effect on phytoplankton growth. In Nutrich2, addition of nitrogen resulted in enhanced growth of phytoplankton in water collected from near the mouth the estuary, but there were no differences in growth among nutrient treatments for the remaining locations. Comparison of phytoplankton growth rate among locations revealed a trend of decreasing growth in moving towards the mouth of the estuary. This trend was unaffected by enrichment with nitrate, phosphate or silicate. We suggest that spatial variation in growth potential within the Port Adelaide River estuary may relate to variation in the concentration of nitrogen as ammonium.  相似文献

Summary

Mesozooplankton, submergent and fringing macrophytes and particles suspended in the water column in the Sundays River estuary South Africa were analyzed for δ13C isotope ratios. Highly negative values (?28.3‰ to ?32.0‰) for the mesozooplankton species suggest the possibility of phytoplankton rather than detritus derived from macrophytes as carbon source.  相似文献
