The agonistic acts and distances separating interacting individuals when acts occurred were recorded for specimens of the hermit crab Pagurus pollicaris. Individuals were observed in groups of six under several conditions (during a snail predation, with food in the aquarium, and nothing in the aquarium except the crabs before and after the crabs had access to empty gastropod shells).

The pattern of agonistic interactions within the groups showed a high degree of order, but the lack of changes in behavior over time indicated these crabs have an aggressive order rather than a dominance hierarchy.

The distances separating crabs when acts were executed were significantly affected by (1) the act being executed, (2) the act executed previously by the other crab, (3) the size of the acting crab, (4) the relative size difference of the two interactants, (5) the individual crabs’ identities, and (6) the condition of observation. The individual crab effects on distance were present when crab size was controlled and crabs that reacted at smaller distances tended significantly to elicit reactions at greater distances.  相似文献

Evidence is presented for territorial behavior in a burrowing wolf spider, Geolycosa xera archboldi McCrone (Araneae, Lycosidae). These spiders live in burrows in the scrub habitats of central Florida, USA. Mean nearest-neighbor distances repeatedly approximate 30 cm. The constancy of this mean indicates that social spacing may be occurring. A test for perceptual range showed that G. xera can respond to potential prey at distances greater than 30 cm, indicating that the 30-cm nearest-neighbor distance does not represent a distance within which larger neighboring burrow-holders treat smaller neighboring conspecifics as food. Dyadic encounters in field enclosures showed that the distance at which neighbors would not be tolerated was within the observed mean nearest-neighbor distance. In these experimental tests for territorial behavior, smaller dyad members lost burrows significantly more often than larger dyad members.  相似文献

A field study revealed that the mating system of the richardiid Setellia sp. meets even the most stringent definition of lek behavior. Males remain on the upper surface of the leaves of Saranthe aff. klotzchiana (Maranthaceae), where they perform ritualized displays related to courtship and territorial behavior. Correlational data support the existence of reproductive dominance hierarchies, which are based on both male vs. male and female vs. female agonistic interactions. Curiously, the behavioral acts performed by Setellia sp. show remarkable similarities to other nonrelated dipteran lekkers. Aspects of evolution and convergence of these behaviors in the Acalyptratae are considered.  相似文献

Gobius cruentatus emit sounds during agonistic interactions. In order to evaluate the effect of boat noise exposure on G. cruentatus territorial behaviour, we played a field-recorded diesel engine boat noise during aggressive encounters between an intruder and a resident fish in a laboratory-controlled tank. We tested two factors: role (resident vs. intruder) and condition (noisy vs. silent); the test animals underwent all the treatments in a round-robin design. Agonistic behavior of the residents was modified by boat noise: during the playback residents were more submissive and won less encounters than in the control (silent) condition. We suggest that sound production is an effective tool for territorial defense, since the impairment of acoustic communication due to the recreational boat noise diminished the ability of the resident to maintain its territory.  相似文献

Nine different reactions of unconditioned agonistic behavior of golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus Waterhouse) which could be elicited by an air blow (UCS) were classically conditioned at a sound of a xylophone (tone g), a previously neutral stimulus. Tone g (CS) was paired with UCS for a different number of trials/day. In all animals exposed to over 20 pairings/day components of the agonistic behavior were brought under the control of Cs, but it was not possible to predict which one of the agonistic reactions would appear. Most of the animals generalized and also showed conditioned reactions (CR) when presenting tone c' instead of tone g. When utilizing a differential conditioning procedure the animals learned to discriminate between the different tones. Extinction of CR at tone g was reached after an individually different number of trials.  相似文献

Aggression control is becoming an important component in the management of animals in captivity, but rigorous quantification of aggressive behavior has heretofore been lacking. This study was done to assess the ability of melengestrol acetate (MGA) given with feed (1.54 mg/kg) to control aggression in a bachelor group of fringe‐eared oryx (Oryx gazella callotis). Systematic behavioral observations were conducted and fecal androgen content was measured for 42 and 90 days, respectively, before treatment, and during the 42 days of treatment. There was a significant reduction in concentrations of fecal androgen from 153 ± 6.0 to 95 ± 4.5 ng/g (T66 = 7, P < 0.0001). This reduction in androgen excretion was apparent after the first week of treatment. There was measurable MGA excreted in the feces during treatment. Although treatment did not arrest all aggressive behaviors among animals, the decline in androgens and increase in MGA was accompanied by a significant reduction in several measures of agonistic behavior. Posturing, aggressive contact, pursuit, and submission occurred significantly less frequently after treatment, and there was also a reduction in fighting‐intention movements. Thus, both ritualized and nonritualized aspects of aggression were affected. Reductions in hormones and aggressive behaviors coincided temporally, suggestive of a potential causal relationship. Consistent with this hypothesis is a strong positive correlation between fecal androgen and total aggressive acts. This effect was not the result of a single behavioral element but occurred across several categories of agonistic behavior. Zoo Biol 20:375–388, 2001. © 2001 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The effects of different environments on the agonistic behavior of males of the cockroach, Nauphoeta cinerea were investigated. We compared the social interactions between pairs of males that had been reared during the period of sexual maturation, when social behavior develops, under one of four environmental treatments: (1) control (28°C with ad libitum food and water) (2) heat stress (35°C, ad libitum food and water) (3) water deprivation (28°C), or (4) food and water deprivation (28°C). Different environments affected the structure of the interactions between males and the behavior of both dominant and subordinate individuals. The mean number of agonistic acts per minute was similar for all treatment groups except the water-deprived group, which was significantly lower. Water-deprived, food- and water-deprived, and heat-stress rearing conditions reduced the stability of agonistic interactions relative to the control group. When reared under stressful conditions, dominant-scored males decreased the number of aggressive acts and increased the number of submissive acts, and subordinate-scored males decreased the number of submissive acts and increased the number of aggressive acts. Thus, stressful environmental conditions can disrupt agonistic interactions and cause both dominant and subordinate male N. cinerea to adopt different behavioral strategies during male-male competition.  相似文献

In a natural troop of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui), the dominant-subordinate relationship restricted the feeding behavior of the subordinate in two ways: (1) the dominant drives away the subordinate through agonistic interactions; and (2) the subordinate avoids approaching the dominant without any agonistic interactions. These occurred only infrequently, and only when an interindividual distance was less than a certain distance, which is called the “tolerance/intolerance” (T/I) distance. On the other hand, the usual interindividual distance when feeding was much greater than the T/I distance. Therefore dominance has little influence on feeding in the study troop. In the study troop, the T/I distance between kin-related females was shorter than that between unrelated individuals. Although this difference may facilitate kin selection if the troop faces severe competition over concentrated food, the difference does not seem to influence survival or reproductive rate in the study troop.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of the neurohypophysial peptide, arginine vasotocin (AVT), on the calling behavior of maleAcris crepitansduring and immediately following a simulated acoustic agonistic encounter. AVT did not block the aggressive response to agonistic calls, as the changes in temporal call characteristics in response to the encounter were similar to those of saline-treated males. However, AVT caused males to begin calling sooner during the agonistic encounter and to call significantly more than saline males during and after the agonistic encounter. In addition, AVT-treated males maintained a higher dominant frequency compared to saline animals during and following the agonistic encounter. Changes in temporal characteristics in the period following the agonistic encounter indicated that control males were more likely to exhibit a rebound effect which resulted in larger changes in calling parameters compared to AVT-treated animals. The results indicate that AVT causes changes in calling behavior in maleA. crepitansduring and following an agonistic encounter that are consistent with animals highly motivated to maintain vigorous active calling throughout changing social conditions.  相似文献

Male songbirds often maintain territories throughout the breeding season, and one of the main functions of song is to deter invaders. Therefore, the distance of an unknown singing rival should play a crucial role within territorial singing interactions of males. This distance is expected to be assessed as more threatening the closer the rival approaches. Here, we tested this assumption by conducting nocturnal playbacks from two different distances in territorial Common nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos). Immediate vocal responses of birds were examined by analysing changes in song structure as well as temporal response features. The next morning, follow‐up playbacks from an intermediate distance allowed us to investigate longer‐lasting effects of nocturnal playbacks. We found that the distance of a simulated rival had an effect on both immediate and later vocal responses of territorial male nightingales with different song parameters being affected during nocturnal and diurnal singing. This indicates that birds perceive intruder distances and adjust their response behaviour both immediately and in later interactions.  相似文献

Red foxVulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758) are generally regarded as strictly territorial animals, inhabiting distinct and well-separated ranges. The home ranges of these predators can vary in size from a few dozen hectares to as much as 20–30 km2. Because it seemed impossible that foxes could defend areas so different in size with the same intensity, the published data were analysed in order to see how changes in home range size could affect the following parameters: home range overlap, the area visited daily and the distance travelled by animals during 24 h. It was found that the overlap between fox families (groups) occupying large ranges was much greater than between foxes living in small ranges. The ratio of the area visited daily to the seasonal home range size was greater in small ranges than in large ones. No significant correlation was found between the mean distance moved daily and home range size (r = −0.118,p = 0.75). These results suggest different patterns of the use of space and differences in territorial defence by red foxes inhabiting large and small ranges. The implications of home range overlap and intensity of contacts between foxes occupying neighbouring ranges for the spread of disease are discussed. The significant overlap between large ranges found in this paper is discussed in the light of Andrzejewski’s (2002) home range concept.

The famously diverse body coloration of cichlid fish serves communicative functions in mating and social interactions including competition for resources. Here, we examined the effects of a color pattern trait—the width of a yellow bar on a black body—on territorial competition in males and females of a color variant (“Ikola”) of the Lake Tanganyika cichlid Tropheus. First, measuring integumentary carotenoid concentrations in the yellow and black body regions, we established that wider yellow bars require more carotenoids allocated to body coloration. However, we also detected high carotenoid concentrations in the black body regions (>?100 µg/g fresh skin), raising questions about the function of non-displayed integumentary carotenoids. Behavioral experiments showed that fish with wider bars were quicker to explore an unfamiliar area of the tank. In experiments including presentations of fish dummies, the bar width of ‘territorial’ dummies had no effect on the latency time which test fish took to intrude into the dummies’ territories. However, male test fish performed fewer aggressive acts against wide-barred than against narrow-barred dummy competitors. Our results suggest that intimidation by wide bars as well as correlations between bar width and explorative behavior may contribute to mediating success in territorial Tropheus “Ikola”.

During intraspecific agonistic encounters in snapping shrimp (Alpheus heterochaelis) the behaviour of the snapper, emitting a fast water jet by very rapid closure of the large modified snapper claw, and the receiver was analysed by single frame video analysis before, during, and after the snap. During snapping the opponents usually face each other. Snapping is most frequently preceded by touch of frontal appendages. The snapping animal keeps its snapper claw slightly across the midline, shielding frontal body parts, and its tailfan bent downwards. The mean claw cocking duration (generating muscle tension) before snapping amounts to about 500 ms. In 58% of the snaps, the snapper claw pointed at the opponent, its claws, densely covered with sensory hairs, representing the main target of the water jet. The mean distance for these directed snaps was 0.9 cm, while undirected snaps were emitted from larger distances of on average 3.4 cm. The snapper usually withdraws immediately after snapping, the receiver approaches. Initial snaps are often answered by return snaps and both are emitted from smaller distances and hit more often than subsequent snaps.  相似文献

Australian Magpies Gymnorhina tibicen sometimes attack and kill other birds in New Zealand. Here we assess how Australian Magpies influence the local distribution of other birds in New Zealand and identify the members of an Australian Magpie population that display the most agonistic acts. We conducted regular observations on six territorial breeding groups and three non‐breeding flocks of Australian Magpies for 1 year to determine (1) if other birds avoid flying or foraging close to Australian Magpies, (2) the proportion of passing birds that are attacked and (3) which social subunits of the Australian Magpie population are most aggressive. In comparison with adjacent Magpie‐free control areas, significantly fewer birds of a range of species (e.g. Common Blackbird Turdus merula, Skylark Alauda arvensis, Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella) foraged close (i.e. ≤ 50 m) to both territorial breeding groups and non‐breeding Australian Magpie flocks; fewer birds were also recorded flying near (i.e. ≤ 50 m) territorial breeding groups but not non‐breeding flocks. Excluding Australasian Harriers (Circus approximans: see below), only 8% of birds recorded within 50 m of territorial breeding groups were observed being attacked. Attacks were most frequent when numerous birds occurred near Australian Magpies and species recorded in the highest frequencies were generally attacked most. Territorial breeding groups attacked 39% of passing Australasian Harriers. All attacks consisted of the victim being swooped at or chased; no physical contact was ever observed. Both adult male and female breeding Australian Magpies were seen attacking other birds; juveniles in breeding groups sometimes supported adults but never initiated attacks. Australian Magpies in non‐breeding flocks were not seen attacking other birds, except Australasian Harriers (attacked in 17% of appearances). Our results suggest that some birds avoid foraging and/or flying close to Australian Magpies because they are sometimes chased by breeding adults of both sexes; however, the proportion of passing birds actually attacked was small. The numerous published observations of Australian Magpie attacks are apparently biased heavily towards sensational events that are rare. Possible reasons why Australian Magpies attack other birds are discussed.  相似文献

The olfactory, visual and, auditory communicative behaviors of a colony of feralGalago crassicaudatus (four males ad three females) observed over a two year period are documented. The enclosure was constructed to simulate a natural environment, but all stimulus possibilities available in the wild were not present and several new ones were introduced. It is not known how many of such differences may have affected the animals' behavior, however not all behaviors observed in the wild appear in the lab. The characteristics of several calls are described in detail and illustrated with sonagrams. These include an agonistic call, a sexual call, a possible alarm or mobbing call, a possible territorial or spacing call and a “low grunting sound” which appears in contexts of sexual and territorial calls. Compared to “higher” primates these galagos exhibit a small number of vocalizations. The communicative system appears directly correlated to social organization.  相似文献

Adult and juvenile common marmosets were introduced to unfamiliar conspecifics individually and in whole groups. In introductions using animals of the same sex, adults were mutually hostile unless they were related or socially familiar; juveniles behaved submissively to adults and little aggression was observed between juveniles. In introductions using animals of the opposite sex, males of all ages solicited females but females did not reciprocate. When whole groups were introduced, in two experiments most of the elder group members behaved aggressively and younger animals did not interact frequently; but in a third experiment, in which the adult males were related, little aggression was observed and younger animals behaved amicably. It is argued that the behavioral reactions shown by individual marmosets are related to territorial hostility and that the behavior of juveniles to adults may aid assimilation of younger animals into new groups.  相似文献

Seed dispersal determines a plant’s reproductive success, range expansion, and population genetic structures. Camellia japonica, a common evergreen tree in Japan, has been the subject of recent genetic studies of population structure, but its mode of seed dispersal has been assumed, without detailed study, to be barochory. The morphological and physiological features of C. japonica seeds, which are large and nutritious, suggest zoochorous dispersal, however. We compared actual distances between mother trees and seedlings with distances attributable to gravity dispersion only, to test the zoochory hypothesis of C. japonica. The animals that transport the seeds for caching were identified experimentally. We also examined the extent to which seed dispersal is affected by the behavior of animal vectors. Seed dispersal by Apodemus speciosus was confirmed by taking photographs of animals that were consuming seeds experimentally deposited on the ground. Camellia seeds hoarded by the rodents under the litter or soil were protected from drying. On the basis of microsatellite analysis of maternal tissue from the seed coat, the mother trees of 28 seedlings were identified. Maternity analysis revealed the average seed-dispersal distance from mother trees was 5.8 m±6.0 SD, a distance greater than initial dispersal by gravity alone. These results indicate that C. japonica is a zoochorous species dispersed by A. speciosus. Fifty percent of the seed dispersal occurred from mature evergreen forests to dwarf bamboo thickets. This directional seed dispersal would contribute to range expansion of C. japonica. Home range sizes of A. speciosus were 0.85 ha at most and covered with different types of vegetation, from evergreen forests to grassland. This low specificity of their microhabitat use might enhance seed dispersal to different types of vegetation. All animal experiments complied with Japanese laws.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Nonbreeding shorebirds often alternate social structure between anonymous flocks and territorial behavior in response to different environmental factors. To evaluate specific drivers for one species, we studied the spacing behavior of wintering Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) at Bahía Santa María, northwestern Mexico, using behavioral observations. The density, population structure, and territorial behavior of Western Sandpipers differed among three habitat types. Cattail marshes supported 110 birds per ha, 49% males, and no territorial birds. Mangrove flats supported 288 birds per ha, 58% males, and 5% territorial birds. Brackish flats supported 365 birds per ha, 76% males, and 7% territorial birds. Territories consisted of rectangular strips (5–9 m long, N= 77). Territory length was not related to either bird density or number of territorial birds by plot, but was positively related to nearest bird distance. Aggression rate was inversely related to territory length, suggesting that territory length is set by the costs of defense. Foraging rate was independent of territory length, and prey densities in territories did not differ from those in areas used by nonterritorial birds. Males were more likely to be territorial and had a higher aggression rate than females, suggesting that males, which forage more on surface prey, were more affected by foraging interference. Our results suggest that the territorial behavior of Western Sandpipers in our study was an opportunistic strategy to reduce foraging interference. The variation in spacing behavior we documented provides evidence that interference competition affects the social structure of Western Sandpipers during the nonbreeding season.  相似文献

The idea that traits linked to individual fitness may differ between males and females was tested in the desert funnel-web spider,Agelenopsis aperta. The study entailed comparison of juvenile male and female behavior with respect to three traits previously shown to be linked to female body mass and ultimately to individual female fitness: habitat discrimination, territorial behavior, and agonistic behavior. As juveniles, male and female spiders behave similarly: they utilize the same habitat cues in locating web sites, maintain similar territory sizes, and exhibit the same behavior patterns in territorial disputes. Like females, males that obtain the highest-quality web sites achieve a greater body mass and are more likely to survive to maturity.  相似文献

Snapping shrimp (Alpheus heterochaelis) produce a fast, well-focused water jet by rapid closure of their specialised snapper claw. As shown previously, water jets may injure the opponent in interspecific encounters (e.g. with small crabs) although no damage was observed in intraspecific encounters. For conspecific receivers the jet represents a potential hydrodynamic signal and can be analysed with the help of mechanosensory hairs. To gain more insight in the biophysical characteristics of the water jet we visualised and analysed jets of tethered snapping shrimp using standard and high speed video recordings. Water jet width increases with increasing distance from the snapper claw tip, and both width and distance increase with increasing snapper claw size. Water jet distances do not increase with increasing claw cocking duration (building up muscle tension) but medium cocking durations of about 550 ms result in longest distances. Mean water jet velocity is 6.5 m s−1 shortly after claw closure but rapidly decreases subsequently. At the mean distance between snapping conspecifics (9 mm) water jet velocities produced by snapping shrimp with larger snapper claws are significantly higher than those of animals with smaller claws. Interestingly, males with equal snapper claw size as females produce significantly faster water jets. Accepted: 31 March 1999  相似文献
