The sensory ecology of scyphomedusae is a subject ripe for investigation. There are sensory structures for which there is no experimental evidence of function, there are behavioral performances for which there are no demonstrated sense organs, and there are behaviors for which there are no adaptive explanations. Scyphomedusae are diploblastic animals with a primitive level of neurological complexity, yet they exhibit a wide range of complex and sophisticated behaviors, such as sun compass navigation and daily horizontal migrations. This paper reviews the sensory ecology of orientation and migratory behavior in scyphomedusae, with an emphasis on data from Aurelia aurita. Adaptive explanations for complex behavior of individuals must be evaluated at the population level in order to assess their ecological importance.  相似文献

Sampling near Bermuda by trawling and SCUBA diving yielded 16species of salps in August 1989 and March-April 1990. Severalspecies occurred in the surface waters only at particular timesof the day. suggesting diel vertical migrations on differentschedules. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most frequent recessive inherited diseases in western countries. Advances in medical care have led to a substantial increase in the life expectancy of CF patients. Survival beyond adolescence has permitted to see fungi not only as late colonizers, but also as potential pathogens responsible of allergic reactions and chronic infections related to lung function deterioration. The role of fungi, nevertheless, has been overlooked until recently. As a result, a number of questions on their epidemiology, clinical significance, or diagnosis, among others, remain unanswered. Besides more in depth studies about the extent of the deleterious effect of fungi on the CF host, new technologies may provide the key to understand its pathogenic role, its interaction with other microbial components of the respiratory microbiota, and should pave the way to define subsets of patients at risk who would benefit from specific therapy. This review is intended to provide a quick overview on what we know about the presence of fungi in the CF airway and its repercussion in the host, and to point out some of the many knowledge gaps needed to understand and advance in the management of fungi in the airway of CF subjects.  相似文献

1. The swimming speed of two forms, an extreme and a typical, within the cladoceran subgenus Eubosmina were examined using a three-dimensional video-technique. The extreme form has a very high carapax and extremely long antennule, features probably involved in predator defence.
2. It was found that the extreme form swam almost 40% slower than the typical form.
3. Calculations show that the extreme form had to work at least 12% harder to swim at the same speed, or if it used the same amount of energy to swim, the extreme form would swim 6% slower. Increased drag, because of its distinguishing carapax and antennule, is thus the most likely explanation for the slower swimming speed of the extreme form, assuming it selects the same power output.
4. Swimming speed can be correlated to food intake either by the frequency of hits to edible food particles or by the time to swim from a poor food patch to a good one. So the reduced speed is probably a great cost for the extreme form.  相似文献

Parasites have deleterious effects on their hosts, often resulting in altered host behavior or increased energy expenditure. When organisms are exposed to suboptimal environments, parasite loading may increase. Microbialite pools along the warm temperate South African coastline have been hypothesized as refugia for Epaulette gobies (Coryogalops sordidus, Gobiidae) when they are outside of their previously known subtropical distribution. The aim of this study was to determine if C. sordidus individuals infected with metacercarial cysts display higher metabolic rates or different swimming behavior compared to noninfected individuals. We measured each goby's swimming performance using a critical station-holding speed (Ucrit) test (n = 60) and visually scored their swimming behavior (n = 52) during these measurements. Also, we measured the metabolic rate of gobies using an intermittent flow respirometer system to determine standard metabolic rate (SMR) and maximum metabolic rate (MMR) from gobies at 21°C before and after swimming trials. Metacercarial load carried by infected gobies seemingly had no impact on the host's energetics (SMR or MMR), swimming ability (as repeated Ucrit tests), or swimming behavior compared to noninfected gobies. Thus, the metacercarial intensity observed in gobies in the current study appeared to have no impact on host swimming performance or behavior. Furthermore, the swimming capacity observed for C. sordidus, in general, suggests that this goby is a poor swimmer compared to other gobiid species.  相似文献

The stomatopod Gonodactylus bredini is a predatory, aggressive crustacean possessing powerful raptorial appendages capable of inflicting serious injury on conspecifics. These weapons are readily employed during contests for cavities in coral rubble. In this study, we document the incidence of wounds in a population of G. bredini from Panama, determine the influence such injuries have on the behavior and fighting ability of individuals when competing for cavities, and examine associated costs of injury. A major consequence of injury in G. bredini is a severe reduction in fighting ability which in turn can alter the outcome of contests for cavities and the behaviors used by injured animals during such contests. A less immediate, but potentially costly consequence of injury due to increased chances of cannibalism and predation and lost breeding opportunities, is an acceleration in the onset of molt cycles in animals missing raptorial appendages.  相似文献

Asexual reproduction is employed by species of Naididae during favorable environmental conditions. In species characteristic of aquatic habitats subject to rapid fluctuations in water levels and temperatures most individuals in a population become sexually mature, and there is degeneration of the alimentary tract, a shortened breeding season, and aclitellar formation of cocoons. Cocoon deposition allows a population to survive periods of environmental stress. Sexual reproduction predominates near the edges of ranges where stress conditions are more prevalent. Species that reproduce sexually in spring are intolerant of summer conditions, while those that breed in autumn are intolerant of winter. Species typical of environmentally stable bodies of water usually have a minority of the population mature at any time, an extended breeding season, and the ability to continue feeding while mature; thus, adaptations for survival in unstable habitats are lacking.  相似文献

【目的】由电光叶蝉Recilia dorsalis传播的水稻条纹花叶病毒(rice stripe mosaic virus, RSMV)目前在我国华南稻区大面积发生并对水稻生产造成严重危害。本研究旨在明确RSMV对介体电光叶蝉生长繁殖及取食行为的影响。【方法】通过生物学实验测定RSMV侵染后电光叶蝉的生长和生命表参数;利用刺吸电位(electrical penetration graph, EPG)技术比较携带和未携带RSMV的电光叶蝉成虫在健康水稻上的取食行为差异;采用Y型嗅觉仪测定电光叶蝉成虫对感染和未感染RSMV水稻的寄主选择倾向性。【结果】与无毒电光叶蝉相比,携带RSMV的电光叶蝉若虫发育历期延长,而若虫存活率、成虫羽化率、雌虫繁殖力和卵孵化率下降。无毒电光叶蝉成虫倾向于选择取食RSMV侵染的水稻,而带毒电光叶蝉成虫倾向于选择取食健康水稻。与无毒电光叶蝉相比,带毒电光叶蝉成虫取食健康水稻所产生的刺探波、障碍波和唾液分泌波次数和持续时间均显著增加,被动取食波和休息波次数减少但时间均延长。【结论】与无毒电光叶蝉相比,感染RSMV使带毒电光叶蝉若虫发育历期延长且不利于其种群的繁殖。R...  相似文献

The inhibition of TNF with therapeutic monoclonal antibodies or antibody/receptor fusion proteins in rheumatoid arthritis still constitutes the benchmark for a successful intervention in an ongoing auto-immune-inflammatory disease and underlines the importance of this cytokine. TNF plays a central role in the defence against intracellular infections and is responsible for the promotion of different aspects of the innate immune response such as inflammatory cell recruitment and cell differentiation. While this cytokine generally displays pro-inflammatory activities supporting the early stages of the inflammatory response, it has been demonstrated to be especially important during infection with intracellular pathogens and, consequently, leishmaniasis of TNF−/− mice ends fatally. However, the specific activities of TNF that confer protection are not yet fully understood. This review will summarize the current understanding of TNF function and signalling, and will discuss recent work in the models of malaria, toxoplasmosis, trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis with particular emphasis on work with gene-deficient mouse models.  相似文献

I studied long- tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis)feeding behavior and ecology as part of a larger behavioral ecological study at the Natai Lengkuas Station, Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. I collected data on feeding behavior via scan sampling of all visible individuals in the focal group (approximately 800 observation hours). I established vegetational plots and monitored them monthly to determine food availability and abundance. I found long- tailed macaques to be primarily frugivorous;leaves, flowers, insects and bark provided the remainder of the diet. They used at least 33 plant species as food sources, but >60% of the diet was provided by only 5 species. Based on previous vegetational analyses, these tree species were among the highest in relative density. However, selection ratios for 19 food species indicate that 13 of them were selected more often than expected. Long- tailed macaques appear to be selective feeders but can exploit a variety of food sources during periods of food scarcity.  相似文献

大沙鼠(Rhombomys opimus),属啮齿目(Rodentia)仓鼠科(Cricetidae)沙鼠亚科(Gerbillinae),广泛分布于中亚的哈萨克斯坦、伊朗、阿富汗、蒙古和中国等国,是沙鼠亚科中体型最大的鼠种,是中亚荒漠区的重要建群鼠种。大沙鼠为建立定居点而挖掘复杂的洞穴系统,生活在此洞穴系统内的一个家族通常由2~3代大沙鼠组成。大沙鼠采食梭梭(Haloxylon ammodendron)、柽柳(Tamarix chinensis)等植物,强烈影响荒漠植物的发育和外貌,以及荒漠生态系统的结构和功能。本文对大沙鼠栖息地、采食、储食、警戒、领域、社群、扩散以及昼间活动节律等行为的研究作以综述,分析了亟待深入研究的内容,以加深对该物种生物学特性的认识,并为有效控制该物种、维护荒漠生态系统稳定健康发展以及荒漠化防治提供基础数据。  相似文献

Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) feeding behavior and ecology were studied at the Natai Lengkuas Station, Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. Data on feeding behavior were collected using scan sampling during group follows. Three vegetational plots containing 1,732 trees were established and monitored monthly for changes in fruit, flower, and young leaf production. Basal area and canopy cover were calculated and used in estimating food abundance. Proboscis monkeys were found to be folivore/frugivores, specializing in seed consumption. At least 55 different plant species were used as food sources, with a marked preference for Eugenia sp. 3/4,Ganua motleyana and Lophopetalum javanicum. These tree species were among the most frequent and most dominant. However, proboscis monkeys were selective feeders; use of tree species as food sources was not based simply on relative density. During times of low food abundance and/or availability proboscis monkeys switched dietary strategies and increased dietary diversity. The average total home range was estimated to be 130.3 ha, with an average group density of 5.2 groups per km2. The average biomass per km2 was estimated to be 499.5 kg. Given their high biomass and predilection for consuming seeds of dominant species, proboscis monkeys may help to maintain and increase vegetational diversity.  相似文献

Galeodea echinophora fed on Echinocardium cordatum in an aquarium. Every few days, each G. echinophora emerged from the sand and foraged for 1–3 h. On detecting an Echinocardium , the Galeodea stopped locomotion and attacked the buried prey from the surface of the sand. The proboscis was extended down to the prey and a small area of test was cleared of spines. A disc was cut out of the softened test, leaving a hole of about 2 mm in diameter. All flesh except the gut was removed from the prey, the entire procedure taking 50–180 min.
One Galeodea echinophora laid 120 egg capsules on the side of the aquarium. These were kept at 13oC and hatched after 112–159 days. Within the capsule, veligers fed on the yolk cells of abortive embryos. Juveniles hatched at the crawling stage, and at first secreted strings of mucus acting as drogues, but after 1 day the juveniles crawled over the substratum. They readily attached themselves to adult Echinocardium cordatum , apparently feeding on the epithelium between the spines or tube feet. Dissection revealed entry of the acinar glands into the proboscis gland ducts, a widening of these ducts as they empty into the buccal cavity and a dorsal fold in the anterior oesophagus. Radular teeth and jaws of Galeodea differ little among species; a taxonomic review of the genus is needed.  相似文献

The purpose of this review is to give some perspective of the factors that influence feeding behaviors and the ability of herbivores to adapt to diets. The most important of these are digestibility, ability to select feed, and achievement of a nutritionally adequate intake. Plant morphology, observed feeding behavior, body size, and gut architecture and size impinge upon these factors. Feeding behavior and dietary specializations are associated with adaptations of gut and mouth parts as well as body size. Parallel and overlapping behaviors occur among herbivores and particularly between ruminants and nonruminants. The conventional classifications of grazers, browsers, and selective feeders are blurred by these evolutionary developments. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Actinoporus elongatus is a widely distributed, tropical, intertidal anemone from the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean regions. Its recorded occurrences are disjunct and its feeding and reproductive ecology have not previously been described in detail. A population of this sand-dwelling species was studied for one year at Shelly Bay, Queensland, Australia. Individuals were found to be randomly distributed within the study site at a density of 42 anemones per hectare. No immigration, juvenile recruitment or mortality was observed. Histological analysis indicated a protracted period of gamete maturity during the summer months, and that the sex ratio was 1:1. A. elongatus is an opportunistic feeder with two distinct feeding methods — actinopharyngeal eversion and a newly described trapdoor response. Many of the generalizations made about mosquito behavior and physiology are based on the extensive research on the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.). However, sufficient differences exist among the numerous species of mosquitoes that make many of these generalizations unwarranted. Some of the specific differences between Ae. aegypti and other mosquito species, particularly the important malaria vector Anopheles gambiae, are discussed.  相似文献
