The reproductive biology and gonad cycle of three Cyprinid fish species:Barbus canis (Valenciennes, 1842),B. longiceps (Valenciennes, 1842) andCapoeta damascina (Valenciennes, 1842), in the upper Jordan River system of Israel were studied by monthly sampling over a two-year period. The reproductive activity of the three species was found to peak from January to April, mostly involving upstream migration towards spawning grounds on river beds 400–900 m above the Jordan River. Hybrids of the three species were collected in nature: in those ofBarbus canis ×Capoeta damascina, the gonads possessed both types of gametes, spermatogonia and oogonia, all of which became arrested at an early stage of development, and infertile; in hybrids of detected in nature, males had oocytes dispersed in the testis, whereas in females, the ovaries had small islets of spermatogonial tissue. In these female hybrids the oocytes ripened normally and spawning occurred.

The reproductive biology ofBarbus holubi, B. kimberleyensis, Labeo capensis andL. umbratus was examined in a large reservoir on the Orange River, South Africa. The findings are integrated into the existing knowledge on largeBarbus andLabeo species, which coexist in most river systems in Africa and Asia.LargeBarbus spawn on gravel beds within the river channel during floods in spring or summer. In continuously flowing regulated rivers, time of spawning is governed by water temperatures. They have moderate fecundity; large eggs, incubation time of several days and the larvae are initially immobile with large yolk sacs. In the impoundment, they spawn in the inflowing regulated river withB. kimberleyensis spawning four to six weeks later than the more cold-tolerantB. holubi, the dominant largeBarbus. Survival is generally good and the juveniles disperse throughout the lake, but unseasonal release of cold water from an upstream impoundment may cause poor reproductive success. In contrast,Labeo species generally spawn on newly flooded ground, usually leaving the main river channel. Spawning may or may not be preceded by a longitudinal migration. Labeos are relatively fecund with small (30%Barbus size) eggs which hatch quickly and the larvae swim in bursts up into the water column before sinking down again.L. capensis does not require a longitudinal spawning migration and breeds throughout the lake, depending on local conditions. Large temporal variation in gonadal development within the population can result in more than one spawning. Dispersal within the lake is poor.L. umbratus uses larger inflowing tributaries for spawning thanL. capensis and its juveniles have a much greater power of dispersal. Early dependence on external feeding and undependable occurrence of conditions for spawning and juvenile feeding makes for variable reproductive success.

Dates of migration and spawning, size-age structure, and fecundity of seasonal races of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta from the Kol River are reviewed, those of early summer, late summer, and autumn races, as well as localization and structure of their spawning grounds, bed-sediment particle size in the redds, hydrological and thermal conditions on spawning grounds, and meristic characters of races. Special traits of reproduction of seasonal races within the species range and in Kamchatka in particular are discussed. The number of seasonal races in rivers depends on the presence of various habitats suitable for spawning. In rivers with complicated hydrogeomorphological structure, the number of seasonal races increases. Variations of types of seasonal races in a particular river and in the whole species area are epigenetic, i.e., they depend on the hereditary genetic program and presence of conditions providing its realization via various channels.

The chemistry of black seabream Spondyliosoma cantharus otoliths from three main fishery grounds (Olhão, Sagres and Sesimbra) located along c. 400 km of the Portuguese south and west coasts was examined. Element:Ca ratios were determined in whole otoliths and otolith cores of young adult specimens of 2–3 years of age. Using the data from whole otoliths, it was possible to discriminate among S. cantharus from the three fishing grounds with an average accuracy of 91%. Differences among fishing grounds were significant for all element:Ca ratios, and otoliths from Sagres had significantly higher levels of all ratios compared to the other fishing grounds. In contrast, the chemical composition of the otolith core, representative of the larval stage, showed limited variation among the fishing grounds, with an average discrimination accuracy of only 44%, although the Mg:Ca ratio of the otolith cores was also significantly higher for the Sagres samples. The data suggest that larval stages experienced a homogenous environment consistent with an offshore oceanic spawning. Juveniles appeared to display local residency on the inshore fishing grounds, areas probably characterized by greater environmental heterogeneity. Spondyliosoma cantharus population structure is consistent with distinct local population units that share a spawning ground providing recruits to different coastal fishery areas.

Summary

The Treur River Barb (Barbus treurensis) was reintroduced into the Treur River after being extinct in this river for about twenty years. During March 1995, 504 individuals were released at a carefully selected site. Recent surveys have shown that, within only five years, Barbus treurensis has successfully repopulated about seven kilometres of the Treur River.

SUMMARY

The plasma proteins of Cyprinus carpio (carp), Barbus holubi (yellowfish), Labeo umbratus (mudfish) and Labeo capensis (mudfish) were electrophoretically separated on polyacrylamide gels from blood samples obtained from specimens sampled during summer and winter in three different localities. Within a species, differences existed in the summer and winter plasma protein electrophoretograms from the different localities. During winter protein fraction concentration differences were found with a displacement of prominence. The results are compared between different experimental conditions and to previous observations. A genetic trait is present, but there were also alterations as a result of environmental factors.

Four fish species,Pollimyrus isidori (Mormyridae),Barbus paludinosus, Labeo forskalii (Cyprinidae), andNemacheilus abyssinicus (Balitoridae), new to the Omo-Turkana basin, were recorded from the Gojeb River, a tributary of the Omo River (south-western Ethiopia). Occurrence of the latter species in the upper reaches of the Blue Nile and of the Omo drainage substantiates the belonging of the upper parts of these water systems to the Abyssinian highlands ichthyofaunal province.

Impacts of alien rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) on critically endangered Berg River redfin (Pseudobarbus burgi), Cape kurper (Sandelia capensis) and Cape galaxias (Galaxias zebratus) in the upper Berg River were investigated in terms of predation and spatial interactions. Trout stomach contents revealed that invertebrates dominate trout diet within the study area, whilst only six fish were recovered from 45 stomachs. The apparent low fish predation success of O. mykiss within the stream suggests a smaller impact compared to that of other alien piscivores such as bass (Micropterus spp.). Galaxias zebratus was the only fish species identified as prey, and its conservation status in the river requires further investigation. Snorkelling surveys revealed that rainbow trout co-exist with S. capensis and adult P. burgi within pools on this river. Galaxias zebratus was absent from the pools, while P. burgi juveniles were segregated from rainbow trout along a depth gradient, possibly indicating avoidance behaviour. Sandelia capensis juveniles may avoid predation by hiding under rocks. Rainbow trout probably compete with indigenous fish for food and space in the pools, though this could not be quantified. The impacts of O. mykiss on all indigenous fauna within the river are likely to be density-dependent.

An ecologically orientated flood protection project was implemented at the Austrian lowland Sulm River. Habitat modelling was conducted during a 3-year monitoring program to assess the effects of river bed embankment and the initiation of a new meander by constructing an initial side channel, and allowing self-developing side erosion. Hydrodynamic and physical habitat models were combined with statistical methods. This study focused on the necessity for including stability analysis when modelling spawning grounds. The critical erosion parameter of the cobbles at spawning grounds was analysed using numerical modelling combined with substrate maps of potential spawning grounds of nase (Chondrostoma nasus). Due to the specific characteristics of this reach of the Sulm River, instability of the riffles can hamper successful reproduction in nase. Spawning grounds of Chondrostoma nasus and their stability must be guaranteed at least for the duration of incubation. This morphodynamic necessity should be incorporated in future restoration projects and when artificially restoring spawning habitats.

The Adelaide River in Australia's Northern Territory is a popular recreational fishing area, as well as habitat for threatened and protected river sharks (Glyphis species). Both the Critically Endangered Speartooth Shark (Glyphis glyphis) and Endangered Northern River Shark (Glyphis garricki) are identified here in illegal catches from recreational angling. The identification of a decayed shark specimen using a DNA barcoding‐like approach is the first such application to the identification of protected sharks in a recreational fishery. While the extent of catches by recreational anglers is unknown, the threatened status of these sharks, their suspected low population sizes, restricted distributions and importance of the Adelaide River as a nursery area call for the consideration of this as a potential conservation issue. As such, appropriate measures should be taken to reduce interactions with recreational anglers. The primary target species in the river is the iconic sportfish, Barramundi, which is predominantly caught by unbaited lure. Sharks are rarely caught on lure, allowing an opportunity for mitigation to focus on a fishing activity (baited hooks) which would limit any regulatory impact on popular lure fishing. Potential mitigation measures range from increased angler education and compliance checks, to the implementation of a spatial closure to baited hook fishing (a lure‐only zone). Such measures may assist in meeting a stated objective of the Australian Government's river shark Recovery Plan to ‘reduce and, where possible, eliminate adverse impacts of recreational fishing'.

SUMMARY

Before inundation in September 1976 Barbus holubi and Labeo capensis were the dominant species each making up 46% of the total catch. Immediately after impoundment the relative density of B. holubi increased to 75% while that of L. capensis dropped to 18%. With minor changes the relative densities remained roughly constant until April 1978 when the turbidity of the dam increased. After this date the relative density of B. holubi rapidly declined, probably due to environmental changes, while that of L. capensis increased due to post-impoundment recruitment. The catches of other species remained low. Changes in catch per unit effort, which were determined from April 1978 onwards substantiate these findings.

This study explored population dynamics of Sepioteuthis australis on a fine temporal scale before, during, and after a 3-month commercial fishing closure on the summer inshore spawning grounds of Great Oyster Bay, Tasmania, Australia. An abrupt change in male size (mantle length) and population sex ratio after the re-opening of the commercial fishery suggests that fishing alters the population structure on the spawning beds from a ‘natural’ structure which is highly biased towards males, to a more even ratio of males to females. Although jigs are taking a representative sample of the squid population using the spawning beds at any one time, the fishery is apparently still effectively selective for males, potentially as a function of differential spawning movements of the two sexes. Increased fishing pressure over the past 5 years had been correlated with a change towards a highly male-biased sex ratio on the spawning beds; however the current study suggests that increased fishing pressure in recent years may not have reduced the proportion of females. Instead, the inter-annual change in sex ratio may reflect changes in the degree of protection from fishing, with progressively longer closures allowing time for more males to accumulate on the beds and therefore, for the proportion of males to increase (as opposed to a decrease of females). As fishing is selective for males, fishing throughout the spawning season could potentially modify the process of sexual selection and the mating behaviors of the individuals within the spawning population, highlighting the need for closures over this crucial period. Additionally, examinations and comparisons of squid population structure need to be interpreted in light of fishing pressure and broader movement patterns.

1. Anadromous salmon transport marine‐derived nutrients and carbon to freshwater and riparian ecosystems upon their return to natal spawning systems. The ecological implications of these subsidies on the trophic ecology of resident fish remain poorly understood despite broad recognition of their potential importance. 2. We studied the within‐year changes in the ration size, composition and stable isotope signature of the diets of two resident salmonids (rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss; Arctic grayling, Thymallus arcticus) before and after the arrival of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) to their spawning grounds in the Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska. 3. Ration size and energy intake increased by 480–620% for both species after salmon arrived. However, the cause of the increases differed between species such that rainbow trout switched to consuming salmon eggs, salmon flesh and blowflies that colonized salmon carcasses, whereas grayling primarily ate more benthic invertebrates that were presumably made available because of physical disturbances by spawning salmon. 4. We also observed an increase in the δ15N of rainbow trout diets post‐salmon, but not for grayling. This presumably led to the observed increase in the δ15N of rainbow trout with increasing body mass, but not for grayling. 5. Using a bioenergetics model, we predicted that salmon‐derived resources contributed a large majority of the energy necessary for growth in this resident fish community. Furthermore, the bioenergetics model also showed how seasonal changes in diet affected the stable isotope ratios of both species. These results expand upon a growing body of literature that highlights the different pathways whereby anadromous salmon influence coastal ecosystems, particularly resident fish.

Five years after inundation, two varieties of Cyprinus carpio —the common carp and the mirror carp, have appeared in the commercial fishery in Lake Kamburu. Species of Tilapia continue to remain the most abundant fish in the lake and their numbers are on the increase. The second most numerous species is Barbus while Labeo sp. seems to be declining. The numbers of Mormyrus have declined drastically. Species of the genera Tilapia, Barbus and Cyprinus are widely distributed within the lake; Labeo prefers the confluence of the rivers entering into the lake and Mormyrus has moved upriver.

This study describes the spawning of the fatheads Psychrolutes marmoratus and Cottunculus granulosus, two psychrolutid species that inhabit the shelf edge and continental slope of the south‐west Atlantic. Females lay large eggs of c. 2·5 mm (P. marmoratus) and 4·5–5·0 mm (C. granulosus); fecundity is from the hundreds (C. granulosus) to a few thousand eggs (P. marmoratus). Egg maturation is synchronous in P. marmoratus with an autumn–winter peak of spawning and group‐synchronous in C. granulosus, which reproduces all year round. In the fishery, females predominate among adult fish in both species, possibly indicating male nest guarding on hard grounds inaccessible to fishing vessels. The reproductive strategy of representatives of the Psychrolutidae is similar to that of other sculpins of the superfamily Cottoidea.

Chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta from the Tugur River of Khabarovsk krai was studied. It was found that, in the river basin, chum salmon of two ecological groups reproduces: the first spawns at river sections with a pronounced underflow and the second spawns at river sections with a groundwater outlet. In the first anadromous migration, usually three maxima of the number of approaches of migrating fish are observed. The first in time maximum is represented by early (or summer) chum salmon, the second includes migrants of early and late (or autumn) form, and the third is represented by chum salmon of only late form. Forms of chum salmon from the Tugur River basin different in dates of the run and the spawning sites differ not only in the ecology of reproduction but also in biological indices. The later chum salmon is larger; its gonads at entry into the river for spawning are less mature as compared with early chum salmon. The autumn form of chum salmon reproducing at key spawning grounds is distributed more widely than the summer form. It is found along the Asian coast from Chukotka in the north to Japan and Korea in the south. Summer chum salmon occupies only part of the range of the autumn form.
