1. Wind‐induced sediment resuspension in shallow lakes affects many physical and biological processes, including food gathering by zooplankton. The effects of suspended sediment on clearance rate were determined for a dominant cladoceran, Daphnia carinata, and calanoid copepod, Boeckella hamata, in Lake Waihola, New Zealand. 2. Animals were incubated at multiple densities for 4 days in lake water containing different amounts of suspended lake sediment. Rates of harvest of major food organisms were determined for each sediment level (turbidity) from changes in net growth rate with grazer density. 3. Daphnia cleared all food organisms 7–40 μm in length at similar rates, but was less efficient in its removal of free bacteria, phytoplankton <7 μm, and large cyanobacterial filaments. Elevation of sediment turbidity from 2 to 10 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) (63 mg DW L?1 added sediment) reduced Daphnia clearance of phytoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates by 72–100%, and of amoebae and attached bacteria by 21–44%. Further inhibition occurred at higher turbidity. 4. Boeckella hamata removed microzooplankton primarily, rather than phytoplankton. The rate at which it cleared rotifers was reduced by 56% when turbidity was increased from 2.5 to 100 NTU. 5. In the absence of macrozooplankton, algal growth increased with sediment turbidity, suggesting that sediment also inhibits rotifer grazing. 6. As mid‐day turbidity in Lake Waihola is ≥10 NTU about 40% of the time, sediment resuspension may play a major role in moderating energy flow and structuring pelagic communities in this lake.  相似文献

Suspended clay reduces Daphnia feeding rate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY. 1. Suspended sediments often reduce cladoceran abundance in the field, and reduce the algal feeding rates of cladocerans in the laboratory. This paper explores the behavioural mechanisms by which suspended clay reduces Daphnia feeding rates. Feeding experiments using radiolabelled Cryptomonas cells showed that 50–200 mg 1-?1 coarse suspended clay (particle size<2 μm) reduced the algal ingestion rate of Daphnia ambigua by 29–87%, but fine suspended clay (<1 μm) had no effect. Suspended clay decreased feeding rate by 60–70% at low algal concentrations (≤5×103 cells ml?1), but by only 27% at high algal concentrations (20×103 cells ml?1). Thus, the inhibitory effects of suspended clay are greater at low algal concentrations. The sudden addition (or removal) of suspended clay caused immediate reductions (or increases) in algal ingestion rate. 2. Observations of the feeding behaviour of tethered D.pulex showed that the frequency of postabdominal rejections increased greatly in the presence of suspended clay. The rejected boluses contained both algae and clay. Thoracic feeding appendage beat frequency decreased in the presence of suspended clay, decreasing the volume of water searched for food particles. 3. These behavioural responses indicate that clay reduces cladoceran feeding rate by mechanically interfering with both the collection and ingestion of algal cells. Both inhibitory effects are caused because cladocerans collect and ingest suspended clay particles. The behavioural mechanisms by which cladocerans regulate their feeding rate in very high concentrations of algal cells (rejection of excess food and reduction in thoracic limb pumping movements) are the same mechanisms responsible for the inhibition of algal ingestion rate in the presence of high concentrations of suspended clay particles.  相似文献

The maintenance of species and genetic diversity within zooplankton egg banks may be crucial to the re-establishment of zooplankton communities following historical disturbance, such as anthropogenic acidification which globally caused widespread damage to ecological communities. Despite this, no other study has described basic characteristics of zooplankton egg banks among lakes with different acidification histories, such as variation in resting egg concentration. Theoretically, habitats with frequent periods of harsh environmental conditions are expected to select for resting egg production or prolonged dormancy in zooplankton, which would increase the size of the resting egg bank in lake sediments. In this study, we compared abundances of viable and inviable calanoid copepod resting eggs among three freshwater lakes with different acidification histories. While Swan Lake underwent major chemical and biological changes from acid and metal deposition, Teardrop and Bat lakes were relatively unaffected by historical acidification and had comparatively constant, but different pH over time. We also tested the effect of age on the viability of resting eggs. As predicted, higher numbers of viable resting eggs were found in recent sediments from acid-recovering Swan Lake compared to study lakes with relatively temporally constant environments (Teardrop and Bat lakes) when the total number of eggs was held as a covariate. We detected this result in spite of similar pelagic abundances of Leptodiaptomus minutus, the dominant species in zooplankton communities of these lakes. This pattern did not necessarily hold for inviable egg concentrations since these eggs were more abundant in both Swan and Bat lakes compared to Teardrop Lake in older sediments (1939–1951, 1800s). Within study lakes, the abundance of viable resting eggs declined with increased egg age. Further study is required to test mechanisms underlying these patterns. Handling editor: S. I. This study examined the effects of a freshwater filter feeding bivalve (Corbicula leana Prime) and large zooplankton (>200 μm, mostly cladocerans and copepods) on the phytoplankton communities in two lakes with contrasting trophic conditions. A controlled experiment was conducted with four treatments (control, zooplankton addition, mussel addition, and both zooplankton and mussel addition), and each established in duplicate 10-l chambers. In both lakes there were significant effects of mussel grazing on phytoplankton density and biomass. The effects were greater in mesotrophic Lake Soyang than in hypertrophic Lake Ilgam. Effects of zooplankton grazing did not differ between these lakes, and zooplankton effects on phytoplankton were much less than the effects of mussels. Although mussels exerted a varying effect on phytoplankton according to their size, mussels reduced densities of almost all phytoplankton taxa. Total mean filtering rate (FR) of mussels in Lake Soyang was significantly greater than that in Lake Ilgam (p=0.002, n=5). Carbon fluxes from phytoplankton to mussels (977–2,379 μgC l?1d?1) and to zooplankton (76–264 μgC l?1 d?1) were always greater in Lake Ilgam due to the greater phytoplankton biomass (p<0.01, n=6). Based on the C-flux to biomass ratios, the mussels consumed 170–754% (avg. 412%) of phytoplankton standing stock in Lake Soyang, and 38–164% (avg. 106%) in Lake Ilgam per day. The C-flux to biomass ratio for mussels within each lake was much greater than for large zooplankton. Mussels reduced total phosphorus concentration by 5–34%, while increasing phosphate by 30–55% relative to the control. Total nitrogen also was reduced (by 9–25%), but there was no noticeable change in nitrate among treatments. The high consumption rate of phytoplankton by Corbicula leana even in a very eutrophic lake suggests that this mussel could affect planktonic and benthic food web structure and function by preferential feeding on small seston and by nutrient recycling. Control of mussel biomass therefore might be an effective tool for management of water quality in shallow eutrophic lakes and reservoirs in Korea.  相似文献

Suspended particles are abiotic factors that can affect the abundance of cladocerans such as daphnids. Ultra-oligotrophic Lake Brienz, situated in the front ranges of the Swiss Alps, is dominated by two major inflows that annually transport over 300,000 tons of suspended glacial material into the lake. A laboratory flow-through experiment was performed to test whether these suspended particles have an influence on the fitness of Daphnia hyalina from Lake Brienz, measured as body size, fecundity and juvenile growth rate, especially when they are simultaneously exposed to low food concentrations. Our results show that the concentration of suspended particles present in Lake Brienz does not reduce the fitness of daphnids, even at very low food concentration. In fact, a low concentration of suspended particles increased the fitness. Reduction of fitness could only be observed at a suspended particle concentration of over 25 mg l−1, a level that has never been recorded in Lake Brienz. The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is the world's most endangered cetacean and has experienced a 60% reduction in the size of its population in the past decade. Knowledge of its basic ecology is essential for developing successful management plans to protect and conserve this species. In this study, we identified vaquita foraging areas by creating an isoscape of the Upper Gulf of California (UGC) based on sediment and zooplankton carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values. Our results confirm that this species is confined to the western region of the UGC, which is characterized by relatively high δ15N values (sediments: 10.2‰ ± 2.0‰, zooplankton: 15.8‰ ± 1.3‰), higher sea surface temperatures (~16°C–25°C), higher concentrations of silt in sediments, and the highest turbidity. In contrast, the eastern region of the UGC had relatively low sediment (7.7‰ ± 2.4‰) and zooplankton (14.6‰ ± 1.0‰) δ15N values, and the highest concentrations of sand in sediments. Our approach is an effective use of marine isoscapes over a small spatial scale (<200 km) to identify the environmental characteristics that define the critical habitat for an extremely endangered marine mammal.  相似文献

  1. Omnivory is widespread in food webs, with an important stabilising effect. The strength of omnivorous trophic interactions may change considerably with changes in the local environment.
  2. Shallow temporary waters are often characterised by high levels of inorganic turbidity that may directly limit the food uptake of filter-feeding organisms, but there is little evidence on how it might affect omnivorous species. Anostracans are key species of temporary waters and recent evidence suggests that these organisms are omnivorous consumers of both phyto- and zooplankton.
  3. Using Branchinecta orientalis as a model species, our aim was to test how turbidity affects the feeding of an omnivorous anostracan. To do this, we used short-term feeding experiments and stable isotope analyses, with animals collected from soda pans in eastern Austria. In the feeding experiments, algae and zooplankton were offered as food either separately or in combination. The prey type treatments were crossed with turbidity levels in a factorial design.
  4. There was a pronounced decrease in the ingested algal biomass with increasing turbidity. Conversely, ingestion rates on zooplankton were less affected by turbidity. Stable isotope analyses from field material supported our experimental results by showing a positive relationship of the trophic position of anostracans and the trophic niche of the communities with turbidity.
  5. Our results show that turbidity modulates the intraguild trophic relationship between anostracans and their prey by shifting the diet of anostracans from more herbivorous in transparent to more carnivorous in turbid waters. Thus, inorganic turbidity might also have a community-shaping role in plankton communities of temporary waters through altering trophic relationships.

The existence of egg banks not only ensures the survival of zooplankton through harsh periods, but could also affect microevolutionary dynamics. Whether zooplankton at high latitudes can build up an egg bank in sediments, as occurs at lower latitudes, is still unknown. The distribution and age of viable resting eggs of the calanoid copepod Boeckella poppei Mrázek in sediments of two small freshwater lakes on King George Island were determined by slicing sediment cores at 1-cm intervals. Most viable resting eggs were found near the sediment surface, with abundance sharply declining to very low values at the depth of 5?cm, although eggs were present as deep as 9?cm in the sediments of Yanouhu Lake. The egg abundances in Xihu Lake and Yanouhu Lake were estimated to be 9.2?×?104 and 7.2?×?104?eggs?m?2, respectively. 210Pb dating indicated a relatively constant sedimentation rate (0.023?cm?year?1) in Xihu Lake, which was used to estimate the mean age (46.8?year), the maximum age (195.7?year), and the mortality rate (1.64?% year?1) of resting eggs of B. poppei in Xihu Lake. The accumulation of resting eggs with long-term viability in sediments provided the first evidence for the existence of egg banks in two Antarctic maritime lakes. An egg bank may serve as an overwintering strategy for B. poppei in Antarctica, enhance their ability to cope with random extreme changes, and contribute to their broad distribution.  相似文献

The composition and annual cycle of the zooplankton of two Ethiopian Rift Valley soda lakes is described. Lake Langano has a conductivity of 1 400 to 1800 µS cm–1 and a permanent mineral turbidity. Lake Abiata is more concentrated (conductivity 19 000 to 23 000 µS cm–1) and more alkaline but less turbid; it is characterised by dense phytoplankton blooms, mainly cyanophytes. The zooplankton assemblage is typically tropical, with relatively few species of Cladocera and Copepoda. There was a marked difference in zooplankton between the two lakes, Lake Abiata showing much higher concentrations and greater wet season/ dry season differences. The species composition was also different. Lake Abiata lacked Cladocera, and calanoid copepods occurred only during the wet season with lower conductivities. These two phenomena were attributed to high sodium bicarbonate concentration and to dense cyanophyte blooms. Eleven species of rotifers occurred in Lake Abiata, including six Brachionus spp. but B. rubens was the only rotifer found in Lake Langano. The seasonal variation of the zooplankton is discussed in relation to seasonal fluctuations in conductivity and Chl a concentration.  相似文献

Effects of suspended clay on Daphnia body growth and fitness   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. Suspended sediments often reduce the abundance, fitness, and feeding rates of planktonic cladocerans. This paper examines the effect of suspended clay particles on the body growth and life-history parameters of Daphnia ambigua. Cohorts were exposed to zero or 50mgl?1 suspended clay (particle size <2μm). Individuals exposed to clay had significantly lower body lengths at a given age than individuals in the control cohort. Parameters for the von Bertalanffy body growth equation were calculated for each individual; the asymptotic maximum body length (lmax) was reduced, but the growth rate constant (k) was unaffected, by the presence of suspended clay. Body length at reproductive maturity was lower in the presence of suspended clay; this may be an adaptive response and is similar to the response of cladocerans to limiting food concentrations. 2. Age-specific survivorship and fecundity were both reduced, and the ages of maturity and first reproduction were both increased, in the presence of suspended clay. The overall effect of these demographic changes was a 70% decline in the net reproductive rate (Ro), a measure of fitness. 3. Suspended clay affected the relationship between body length and fecundity. Animals of a given length produced fewer eggs in the presence of suspended clay. In addition, there was a significant interaction in the effects of body length and clay on brood size: the slope of the regression line of brood size as a function of body length was lower in the presence of clay. This interaction has also been observed in limiting food concentrations, and may be caused by reductions in body length at maturity in low food or high clay environments. 4. The similarity between the effects of limiting food concentrations and suspended clay on Daphnia body growth, survivorship, fecundity, and brood size makes sense, given previous observations showing that suspended clay reduces the feeding rate of D. ambigua by up to 70% due to mechanical interference with feeding behaviours.  相似文献

Effects of UV-B irradiated algae on zooplankton grazing   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

We tested the effects of UV-B stressed algae on grazing rates of zooplankton. Four algal species (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Cryptomonas sp., Scenedesmus obliquus and Microcystis aeruginosa) were used as food and fed to three zooplankton species (Daphnia galeata, Bosmina longirostris and Brachionus calyciflorus), representing different taxonomic groups. The phytoplankton species were cultured under PAR conditions, and under PAR supplemented with UV-B radiation at two intensities (0.3 W m–2 and 0.7 W m–2, 6 hours per day). Ingestion and incorporation experiments were performed at two food levels (0.1 and 1.0 mg C l–1) using radiotracer techniques. The effect of food concentration on ingestion and incorporation rate was significant for all three zooplankton species, but the effect of UV-B radiation was more complex. The reactions of the zooplankton species to UV-B stressed algae were different. UV-B stressed algae did not affect Daphnia grazing rates. For Bosmina the rates increased when feeding on UV-B stressed Microcystis and decreased when feeding on UV-B stressed Chlamydomonas, compared with non-stressed algae. Brachionus grazing rates were increased when feeding on UV-B stressed Cryptomonas and UV-B stressed Scenedesmus, and decreased when feeding on UV-B stressed Microcystis, compared with non-stressed algae. These results suggest that on a short time scale UV-B radiation may result in increased grazing rates of zooplankton, but also in decreased grazing rates. Long term effects of UV-B radiation on phytoplankton and zooplankton communities are therefore difficult to predict.  相似文献

The dumping of bauxite tailings into Batata Lake, an Amazonian clear-water lake, generated high levels of turbidity and caused a serious decrease in phytoplankton densities, which could possibly be the result of a photosynthetic limitation due to light attenuation together with an increase in algal sinking due to the adhesion of clay particles. This study aimed to investigate the sinking process through the addition of different suspended clay concentrations in columns containing Batata lake water. Since no effect of the suspended clays on Batata Lake phytoplankton sinking was observed, it was then evaluated, under laboratory conditions, whether the low conductivity of the Batata Lake water could interfere with the algae-clay aggregation process. Cultures of two algal species known to be capable to aggregate to Batata Lake suspended clays in algal culture medium: Staurodesmus convergens and Phormidium amoenum, were added to both the low conductivity Batata Lake water (14 μS cm?1) and the high conductivity algal culture media (WC – 300 μS cm?1 and Z8 – 560 μS cm?1) together with Batata lake suspended clays. In both algal culture media and Batata lake water the two species had their sinking accelerated due to clay adhesion. It is thus suggested that the decrease in phytoplankton densities recorded in Batata Lake may not be related to an increase in phytoplankton loss rates due to algal-clay aggregation, but rather are a consequence of decreasing growth rates because of light attenuation.  相似文献

Studies have shown a strong linkage between zooplankton and fisheries' potential in tropical lakes. High zooplankton production provides the basis for fish production, but knowledge of zooplankton production dynamics in African lakes is extremely limited. Crustacean zooplankton production and the biomass of dominant rotifers in Lake Bosumtwi were assessed over a 2‐year period. The crustaceans comprised an endemic and extremely abundant cyclopoid copepod, Mesocyclops bosumtwii and the cladoceran Moina micrura. Mean standing stock of the crustaceans was 429 mg dw m?3, whilst annual production averaged 2.1 g dw m?3 y?1. Production doubled from 1.4 g dw m?3 y?1 in 2005 to 2.8 g dw m?3 y?1 in 2006. Copepods accounted for 98.5% of crustacean production. The biomass of the dominant rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and Hexarthra intermedia was less than 1% of total zooplankton biomass. Daily turnover rate and turnover time of the crustaceans was 0.19 day?1 and 6.2 days respectively. Crustacean production yielded no statistical relationship with phytoplankton biomass. Production was well within the range of tropical lakes. Peak crustacean production synchronized maximum rainfall, lake mixing and phytoplankton production. Most importantly, no one year's set of dynamics can be used to characterize zooplankton production in the lake.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 A marked gradient in water transparency along the 75 km longitudinal axis of Lake le Roux, a fjord-like reservoir on the Orange River, South Africa, was consistently evident over several years. On average, Secchi depth transparency doubled from approximately 18 cm at the turbid upper end (which is fed by sediment-laden Orange River water discharged from Lake Verwoerd), to 33 cm near the dam wall. A variety of changes in abiotic limn logical attributes (temperature, light attenuation, suspended solids and nutrient levels, etc.), and in the abundance and composition of planktonic biota accompany, and may be imposed by, this turbidity gradient.
  • 2 On average, phytoplankton abundance (assessed as chlorophyll content), and total crustacean zooplankton biomass (per unit volume) were lowest at the very top of the lake, but reached maximal values within 15 km ‘downstream’, reflecting the rapid development of plankton. These variables subsequently declined downstream, in contrast to the apparent improvement in conditions for planktonic existence (increasing water transparency, longer water residence time, etc.).
  • 3 The composition of crustacean zooplankton varied along the length of the reservoir. Both seasonal and inter-annual differences were evident. On average, however, cladocerans (Daphnia, Moina), despite their r-selected attributes, were especially sparse in the more turbid, uppermost reaches, where advective effects of river inflows were most pronounced. The large predatory copepod Lovenula was surprisingly most abundant in this region, where potential planktonic curstacean prey was scarce. The attainment of maximal zooplankton standing slocks some 15 km downstream was attributable to the proliferation particularly of the herbivorous copepod Metadiaptomus, along with minor increases in several ctadoceran components. The latter continued to increase downstream, in line with declining turbidity, although Daphnia and Moina reached their respective abundance maxima in central and lower reaches of the reservoir, reflecting slight disparities in response to turbidity or related gradients. By contrast.

SUMMARY. 1. Changes in zoopiankton composition and abundance in Lake le Roux, a turbid subtropical reservoir on the Orange River in South Africa, were correlated with changes in water transparency (related to suspended sediment levels) during a 7 year field study. Results of radiotracer studies of the effect of mineral turbidity on zooplankton feeding rates which potentially influence competitive ability, and thus community structure, are reported here.
2. Feeding rates of five zooplankters were very variable, but consistently declined with rising turbidity: rates of decline differed between species. A regression estimate of the critical turbidity threshold at which food intake matched the estimated respiratory need was derived for each species. This yielded the following "turbidity-tolerance" ranking: Moina brachiata Jurine > Metadiaptomus meridianus (van Douwe) × Daphnia gibba Methuen > D. barbata Weltner > D. longispina O. F. Muller. The consistency between this ranking and one based upon abundance-transparency relationships in the field study suggests that community structure is related to differential feeding capabilities, although other influences are not excluded.
3. Tests on D. gibba and M. meridianus failed to reveal any detectable feeding rate saturation (incipient limiting food level) below 1.2mg 1−1 C. The relative reduction in feeding rates at elevated turbidity was nearly 3 times greater for the daphnid than the copepod over a range of food concentrations, and considerably reduces the competitive ability of this (and other) daphnids. The turbidity tolerance disparity between Moina and the daphnids demonstrates a more complex situation than a simple copepod/cladoceran dichotomy. These findings and their implieations are discussed in relation to wider features of zooplankton ecology.  相似文献

Restoration of the highly eutrophic Reeuwijk lakes (ca. 700 ha) started in 1986 by reducing the external phosphorus loading. As an additional measure to improve the quality of the lake water, the structure of the fish population in Lake Klein Vogelenzang (18 ha) was altered in 1989 by the removal of ca. 100 kg ha–1 bream from the lake in April and December. This constituted about 50% of the total bream biomass in the lake. The fish-stock reduction in April, 1989, was initially followed by high phosphorus concentrations, probably the result of considerable phosphorus release from the sediments. The resulting heavy algal blooms that occurred reduced the transparency to very low values. During the summer the zooplankton population increased markedly in numbers coinciding with reductions in total suspended matter including (blue-green) algae. A great improvement in Secchi-disc transparency was observed and by the end of December, 1989, the bottom of the lake (1.5–2.0 m) was visible. After heavy storms in January and February 1990, transparency dropped to < 1 m as a result of resuspension of high concentrations of suspended matter from the bottom sediments. Although transparency over the rest of 1990 was higher than in 1988, i.e. the year preceding the removal of fish (biomanipulation), it was lower than expected, based on the results of 1989. The study shows that technical and biological factors can cause serious management problems for the implementation of biomanipulation in larger water bodies.  相似文献

The fish community in the Loosdrecht lakes is dominated by bream, pikeperch and smelt and is characteristic of shallow eutrophic lakes in The Netherlands. The biomasses of the respective fish species amount to ca. 250, 25 and 10 kg ha–1 and correspond to those in Tjeukemeer, another lake in The Netherlands. The average size of bream, however, is much smaller in the Loosdrecht lakes as a consequence of poorer feeding conditions. The zooplankton community in the Loosdrecht lakes is predominantly composed of relatively small species such as Daphnia cucullata, Bosmina coregoni and cyclopoid copepods, whereas in Tjeukemeer, Daphnia hyalina is permanently present in relatively high densities and the other species show a larger mean length. In the Loosdrecht lakes, the absence of D. hyalina and the smaller sizes of the other zooplankton species could be the consequence of a higher predation pressure, in combination with unfavourable feeding conditions for the zooplankton including the low density of green algae and the high density of filamentous cyanobacteria. A biomanipulation experiment in Lake Breukeleveen, one of the Loosdrecht lakes, indicated that feeding conditions were too unfavourable for large zooplankton to develop in spring, when the reduced fish biomass was not yet supplemented by natural recruitment and immigration.  相似文献

The role of zoobenthos in energy flow in two shallow lakes   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
Lindegaard  Claus 《Hydrobiologia》1994,(1):313-322
Net production of zoobenthos in two shallow and eutrophic lakes, i.e. the S-basin of Mývatn, Iceland (maximum depth 4.2 m, mean depth 2.3 m) and Hjarbæk Fjord, Denmark (maximum depth 6.5 m, mean depth 1.9 m) were calculated as 878 and 1093 kJ m-2 yr-1, respectively. The zoobenthos in both lakes was dominated by Chironomidae (Diptera) living partly as filtrators feeding on suspended particles (phytoplankton) and partly as surface feeders foraging on benthic algae and/or seston. Respiration and consumption were estimated from the literature. Net production efficiency averaged 0.41 and 0.48 in Hjarbæk Fjord and Mývatn, respectively. Ingestion was dominated by herbivorous chironomids, while detritivorous tubificids were insignificant. Zoobenthic production made up 86% of total secondary production (zooplankton plus zoobenthos) in both lakes. The trophic efficiency between net primary production and benthic net secondary production was 8% and 11% in Hjarbæk Fjord and Lake Mývatn S-basin, respectively.  相似文献

Climate change is altering temperatures and precipitation patterns all over the world. In Patagonia, Argentina, predicted increase in precipitation together with rapidly melting glaciers increase the surface runoff, and thereby the transport of suspended solids to recipient lakes. Suspended solids affect the visual conditions in the water which in turn restricts visual foraging. The native fish Aplochiton zebra Jenyns, and its filter-feeding cladoceran prey, Daphnia commutata Ekman, were subjected to foraging experiments at three turbidity levels. A. zebra foraging rate was substantially reduced at naturally occurring turbidity levels and the filtering rate of D. commutata was reduced at the highest turbidity level. This indicates that Daphnia may be partly released from predation from A. zebra at the same time as it can maintain relatively high feeding rates as turbidity increases. Lower foraging rates at the same time as the metabolic demand increases, through increased temperatures, may result in larger effects on A. zebra than could be expected from increases in turbidity or temperature alone. Turbidity may, as an indirect effect of climate change, decrease planktivore foraging rates and thereby alter the interaction strength between trophic levels.  相似文献

1. Grazer and nutrient controls of phytoplankton biomass were tested on two reservoirs of different productivity to assess the potential for zooplankton grazing to affect chlorophyll/phosphorus regression models under Australian conditions. Experiments with zooplankton and nutrients manipulated in enclosures, laboratory feeding trials, and the analysis of in-lake plankton time series were performed. 2. Enclosures with water from the more productive Lake Hume (chlorophyll a = 3–17.5 μg l–1), revealed significant zooplankton effects on chlorophyll a in 3/6, phosphorus limitation in 4/6 and nitrogen limitation in 1/6 of experiments conducted throughout the year. Enclosures with water from the less productive Lake Dartmouth (chlorophyll a = 0.8–3.5 μg l–1), revealed significant zooplankton effects in 5/6, phosphorus limitation in 5/6 and nitrogen limitation in 2/6 of experiments. 3. While Lake Hume enclosure manipulations of the biomass of cladocerans (Daphnia and Diaphanosoma) and large copepods (Boeckella) had negative effects, small copepods (Mesocyclops and Calamoecia) could have positive effects on chlorophyll a. 4. In Lake Hume, total phytoplankton biovolume was negatively correlated with cladoceran biomass, positively with copepod biomass and was uncorrelated with total crustacean biomass. In Lake Dartmouth, total phytoplankton biovolume was negatively correlated with cladoceran biomass, copepod biomass and total crustacean biomass. 5. In both reservoirs, temporal variation in the biomass of Daphnia carinata alone could explain more than 50% of the observed variance in total phytoplankton biovolume. 6. During a period of low phytoplankton biovolume in Lake Hume in spring–summer 1993–94, a conservative estimate of cladoceran community grazing reached a maximum of 0.80 day–1, suggesting that Cladocera made an important contribution to the development of the observed clear-water phase. 7. Enclosure experiments predicted significant grazing when the Cladocera/Phytoplankton biomass ratio was greater than 0.1; this threshold was consistently exceeded during clear water phase in Lake Hume. 8. Crustacean length had a significant effect on individual grazing rates in bottle experiments, with large Daphnia having highest rates. In both reservoirs, mean crustacean length was negatively correlated with phytoplankton biovolume. The observed upper limit of its variation was nearly twice as high compared to other world lakes.  相似文献
